Ava Mendoza - The Circular Train - a true solo album, electric guitar only (and a touch of vocals)
Ava Mendoza has never made an album quite as personal as her third solo full-length, The Circular Train. Through her decades of collaborations with Nels Cline, Carla Bozulich, William Parker, Fred Frith, Matana Roberts, and Mick Barr — plus years leading her power trio Unnatural Ways and playing in Bill Orcutt’s quartet — the guitarist’s name has become synonymous with virtuoso technique, raw passion, and visceral resonance, a player pushing the edges of the guitar’s possibilities. Along the way, from 2007 to 2023, Mendoza was writing these slow-burning, incandescent songs. The Circular Train is comprised solely of her single-tracked guitar playing and, on two songs, her corporeal singing. Her first solo LP of original material since relocating from California to New York City a decade ago, much of The Circular Train was honed amid pandemic years that clarified the virtues of slowing down. This expressive avant-rock is a definitive introduction to one of the most uncompromising and inquisitive visions in creative music. Mendoza’s thrilling melange of free jazz, blues, noise, classical training, and blazing experimental rock’n’roll all coheres with ecstatic feedback, with picking and solos that crest with shimmer. Sometimes she sounds like a one-woman Sonic Youth with guttural and poised vocals that equally evoke Patti Smith and blues greats like Jessie Mae Hemphill. Conceptually, The Circular Train is presented as a psychogeographical train ride through certain of Mendoza’s musical homelands. The songs draw on ancestral and recent familial memories, notably of her parents’ roots in mining towns — in her father’s home country of Bolivia and mother’s hometown of Butte, Montana, each country with its own history of colonialism, racism, forced labor, the eradication of culture and the subsequent excavation of it. (more...) — JENN PELLY Ava Mendoza- guitar, vox Compositions: 1-5 by Ava Mendoza (BMI) 6 by Gussie L. Davis, recorded/popularized by Huddie “Leadbelly” Ledbetter

Bill Orcutt Guitar Quartet - Roulette, Brooklyn, New York, March 27, 2023 / Tiny Desk Concert
Here's what I wrote about Bill Orcutt's Music for Four Guitars for Aquarium Drunkard's year-end roundup: "A multitracked electric guitar masterpiece, [it] offers a richly layered trip. As with everything Orcutt does, there’s a wild intensity at work, but the interlinked compositions here could also work as meditation soundtracks. Orcutt continues to surprise."
Most surprising, perhaps, is that Orcutt managed to take Four Guitars on the road this year. He brought with him some serious underground ringers to bring this stuff to life: Shane Parish, Ava Mendoza and Wendy Eisenberg. Thanks to Parish's notations, the quartet hews closely to the original compositions, but in a live setting, things open up and flow, creating a truly heady listening (and viewing) experience. Knotty, gnarly, totally beautiful. The musicians also seem to be having a blast playing together, which is always a plus in my book.
And hey, the Bill Orcutt Guitar Quartet is playing in Los Angeles TONIGHT. I'd go if I were you.

kind of obsessed with this theme of not belonging to earth in midnight burger
like....Gloria, Ava, Casper and Leif. They are all humans. They were born on Earth, they lived there their whole life, they know how to act and behave when they are with other humans.
And yet. Earth is not for them.
It is seen primarily in Leif, with hjis whole backstory. Even his own mother referring to him as someone "who fell out from space". He left the Earth with the first chance and he never looked back. Sure, he may sometimes grow nostalgic, but he never regretted his decision. Earth is not his home and the problem is not even in how much Earth is undeveloped not only by the standards of Triad but even by Leif's standards. He doesn't understand people, he doesn't understand why they do what they do. What's even more prominent with Leif is how the only space he belongs is SPACE. Like COSMOS. Not some other planet or moon, just the entirety of space. His first real friend is an alien journalist!!! And the only humans he managed to connect to are literary the ones pulled from 20 years from his time(on Earth) and in a dimension spinning time warping diner!
But this idea, of not belonging to Earth, is also present in Gloria and Ava and even Casper. It's not as prominent as with Leif, but it is still present.
Gloria admits she never liked the idea of marriage and kids. Her parents were the only stable relationship she had. Her whole life, blood and soul was her restaurant and when she lost it she had no idea what to do with herself.
Ava, who as we know, is so much smarter than everyone else. The academia hurt her so much because they didn't understand her. She wanted to figure out the WHOLE UNIVERSE and had not only the guts to do it, but also the brain power. Somewhere, where other people would long gave up, she remained stubborn and victorious.
And even Casper. I must admit, right now I am only on episode 38 and this whole season seems to be heavily focused on Casper and his relation to the diner, so I may not know something BUT! BUT! You cannot tell me, that his son running from home wasn't his excuse to get out from his life. Of course, he went looking for him, no objections here, but it also was an opportunity for him to sort of quit. Just get out. I'm not sure what the future holds for him, there are hints that he may leave Midnight Burger, which honestly I kiiiind of sad about it? I think it would be really cool if he has a chance to leave the midnight burger but chose not to. Because now - similar to how it was at the end of season 2, when he talked to Ava - he chooses this. He chooses those people, he chooses Midnight Burger. It is a conscious choice, the same it was with Ava, Gloria, and Leif.
Anyway. Something about you being born on this planet and then realizing this is not your planet. The problem is not with you or your environment, the problem is with the whole fucking planet. Something about you being stuck there because humanity made only the first steps into space exploration and you will die sooner than get into space. You living with this thought that you are stuck here. There is no escape.
And then you see a diner.

Mendoza Hoff Revels - Echolocation - a blast of instrumental skronk rock
Ava Mendoza: electric guitar, compositions Devin Hoff: electric bass, compositions James Brandon Lewis: tenor saxophone Ches Smith: drums 'Echolocation' is the astonishing debut album from Mendoza Hoff Revels, a formidable new unit led by Ava Mendoza & Devin Hoff and featuring James Brandon Lewis & Ches Smith. While Mendoza and Hoff have floated around each other's musical orbits for decades, and have been friends for some time, this is their first work together on record. It is an electric & holy harmonic fusion of highly estimable musical forces; wholly rendered. The original impetus of this group was Mendoza’s, based on the love she and Hoff shared for aggressive and polyglot electric avant-garde ensembles – artists like mid-80's Black Flag (w/ Roessler & Stevenson) and Ornette Coleman's Prime Time bands revolutionized the way they heard music. As stated in their liner notes, "we shared the writing of these pieces, though without the sizable stamps of both James and Ches, they would sound nothing like they do here.” The result – 21st Century progressive rock played by punk rockers with serious improv skills and a deep jazz feel. And vitally – non-stop wicked catchy tunes, riffs & grooves. Strong sonic references on our initial hearing at AUM Fidelity were The Stooges’ Funhouse, rendered by an entire band readily adept at rapidly swinging rhythmic & harmonic shifts (plus tenor sax on every track!) -&- minutemen, both their entire body of music & their fundamental egalitarian punk ethos. A higher combo accolade to any "rock-adjacent" band playing with electricity we at AUM cannot bestow. Art & Design by William Mazza Studio
