Frozen Through the Years
Yearly Spotlight: 2019
Written by @toriofthetrees
After six long years, 2019 saw the release of the long-anticipated sequel, Frozen II.
The lead-up up to the release was intense to say the least.
The first teaser trailer premiered in February, opening with Elsa on a black-sand beach stripped down to her bare essentials, barefoot, ready to take on a raging sea. She attempted twice to cross the torrential waters before the trailer turned to Anna’s shock of hundreds of diamond-shaped glass covered in strange symbols, taking over Arendelle. Following closely behind were several moments of Elsa, Olaf, Kristoff, and Anna taking on dangerous challenges, and a show of strange, foreign magic. All of this was centered around this new, mysterious setting known only at the time as an autumnal forest.
It gave just enough of a preview to hook millions.
The trailer was viewed and downloaded several million times on Twitter and YouTube within a short amount of time. In the fandom, a storm of news, posts, speculation, and discussions broke out over several platforms, too chaotic to keep track of. The months that followed the teaser were absolutely brimming with excitement! Across cinemas, television, and the internet—both in the US and internationally—came many trailers, sneak peaks, and posters about the upcoming movie. Alongside this came leaks as well, all of it sparking speculation in the fandom over what the plot of the movie could be.
Countless books about Frozen II came onto the market before the film was even released, notably without the end of the film printed within their pages. This lead to fans in many locations to protest the shops selling these books, wanting their money back.
Most of these protests lead to no results.
Success for Disney Studios, specifically. contributed to the exposure for Frozen II. ~In March, Disney invested billions of US dollars in company acquisitions across the film and TV industry, creating the most powerful media company in the world in the USA. ~This was the year of the 6th Disney D23 Expo, the biggest Disney fan event of the year! It was held on August 23–25 at the Anaheim Convention Center in California, showcasing news and pictures around all the new Disney parks, resorts—and movies! Including Frozen II! ~On November 12, 2019, Disney launched its streaming platform Disney+ in several countries ~2019 ultimately proved to be Disney's most successful cinema year to date, regardless of which new film was released!
All of this led up to the release of Frozen II on November 20, 2019 in most countries (unfortunately some countries had to wait until the beginning of January).
This new installment to Elsa and Anna’s story saw the sisters and their found family making a long trek away from Arendelle… in order to save it. Mysterious magics send them up north to the Enchanted Forest, that is covered in an impenetrable mist. Yet, it parts for them. The deeper they go into the forest, the more they discover about themselves, their family, the spirits, Arendelle… so that only one thing can be said for certain: Nothing will ever be the same again.
This film was polarizing.
In the cultural zeitgeist, it was a massive success like its predecessor, exceeding Frozen as the highest grossing animated film of all time. It received mostly positive reviews and it would go on to be nominated for multiple awards, including an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song. The Disney merchandising machinery was running at full speed and earned the company many more millions within a short amount of time. The limited edition dolls were sold out on the same day as release! However, it notably did not have the same cultural reach that its predecessor had. “Into the Unknown,” to many, was not comparable to “Let it Go.” And the film was nominated aplenty, but never actually received any awards.
However, it was within the fandom that this polarization was seen the clearest.
Frozen II made good on its promise that nothing would ever be the same for these characters. The sisters, though still as close as ever, no longer lived under the same roof by the end of the film. Elsa abdicated her crown for her duties as the Fifth Spirit and Guardian of the Enchanted Forest, while Anna took over as Queen of Arendelle. This separation, whilst to some was a step-up for the sisters, others saw as a step back. This debate rages in the fandom to this day, and many, many fans on Tumblr, Reddit, and other social media prefer Frozen to its sequel.
The fandom did gain some new content, including the addition of multiple ships. There were two that were rather popular. The first was Agduna (Agnarr/Iduna), which came about because of the major focus Frozen II had on them, the sisters’ parents. The second was Elsamaren (Elsa/Honeymaren), which came about because Honeymaren had a minor, but important interaction with Elsa in the film that sent her on the right path to Ahtohallan.
Just as Frozen II’s main theme—change—impacted the sisters, so to it did the fandom. The polarizing effect of the film lead to quite passionate arguments over its content. However, the fandom did not get any smaller or lose any passion. People continued to create, debate, discuss, and post about Frozen and Frozen II. In interviews, the cast and crew said that Frozen II was made to grow up with the audience who were there when the first film was released in theaters. With that in mind, the fandom no longer looked like it did when Frozen first came out.
Things change.
But we can still all agree on one thing: We love Frozen 💕

"City Hunter's Angel Dust" Movie Coming to Theaters This Fall 2023
The new movie adaptation of "City Hunter" entitled "City Hunter the Movie: Angel Dust" is set to be released in Autumn 2023. The announcement of the film was accompanied by a trailer and poster reveal, as well as comments from the director, Kenji Kodama, who previously directed the previous movie, "City Hunter the Movie: Shinjuku Private Eyes."
"City Hunter" is a comedy that portrays the hard-boiled life of Ryo Saeba and his colleagues, who are the top sweepers of the underworld in Shinjuku. The original manga was created by Tsukasa Hojo in 1985 and was serialized in "Weekly Shonen Jump." The manga has sold over 50 million copies worldwide. The anime series premiered in 1987 and was popular for its combination of hard-boiled stories with comedic elements such as "mokkori" and "100t hammer." The previous movie, "City Hunter the Movie: Shinjuku Private Eyes," was released in February 2019 after a 20-year hiatus and grossed over 1.5 billion yen with over one million tickets sold.
The new movie, "City Hunter the Movie: Angel Dust," will be directed by Kenji Kodama, just like the previous movie. Sunrise, the company behind the "City Hunter" anime series, will collaborate with Answer Studio to produce the movie. The scriptwriter for the movie will be Yasuyuki Muto, who has previously worked on "Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway" and served as the series composer for "Tokyo Revengers."
The trailer shows Ryo Saeba, who is known as the City Hunter, showcasing his love for beautiful women from the outset. However, his partner, Kaori Makimura, has no patience for his womanizing ways and strikes him with a "congratulations on the new movie, 2023t hammer" instead of a 100t hammer. The trailer also features action scenes of Ryo driving his car through the city, a mysterious masked warrior, and Ryo showcasing his expert shooting skills.
The poster visual shows Ryo and Kaori standing in front of Shinjuku's night view. Fans of the series are excitedly anticipating the release of this new movie. Read the full article

i laughed. i cried. me and my friend and then an elderly couple were laughing outloud in the cinema during this it was very wholesome i loved it.
SMOKE SAUNA SISTERHOOD (2023) - dir. anna hints
"in the darkness of a smoke sauna, women share their innermost secrets and intimate experiences, washing off the shame trapped in their bodies and regaining their strength through a sense of communion." took the description right off the page but i couldn't have said it better; i cried while watching it, it reminded my of my grandma and how much i miss her i loved it a lot

THE PRINCESS BRIDE (1987) - dir. rob reiner
i only saw this like a month ago and i have to admit that i've been missing out IT'S SO FUNNY?????? it's fucking ridiculous "there's a shortage of perfectly beautiful breasts in this world it would be a pity to damage your"??????????????? ten out of ten for that already + the link is a clip from the film and not a trailer
·:* RATING: ACTION, BLOOD, VIOLENCE AND JOKES
INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS (2009) - dir. quentin tarantino
very rewatchable, i know every single line in it i think...... rather violent so beware but then again it's quentin tarantino
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (2015) - dir. george miller
an important fun fact! the director of this film asked his wife to edit the action sequences (she had no experience editing action films) and the reasoning behind it was "because if a guy did it, it would look like every other action movie." (it won an academy award for 'best editing' btw)
ATOMIC BLONDE (2017) - dir. david leitch
i think it's great how the mc fights with using her surroundings, and it's gritty - she gets hit and hit hard but she can't stop she has a job to do. great action scenes, no unnecessary cutting and they show everything + charlize theron did most of her stunts. and as always the soundtrack is so sexy, oh and btw it's gay!!!!
THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. (2015) - dir. guy ritchie
now, i do realize armie the cannibal is here but i might be biased bc i looooove the soundtrack and the director and the humor of it and the action of it and the tropes in it and okay i'm just gonna say that i love this movie ok
BODIES, BODIES, BODIES (2022) - dir. halina reijn
another really fucking funny one, it's very meta but it's not annoying
MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: FALLOUT (2018) - dir. christopher mcquarrie
when i say i like action movies i mean it!!!!! this has the cleanest fights in every possible term - they're shot clearly, you can see all of their moves and the fight choreographies are good, they flow very well + it's always good to see the mc's take hits and ethan gets his shit rocked a nice couple of times!! another plus is to know that the actors are dedicated to their films and they take the extra step to do as many of their stunts as possible, it's so cool!!!!
DON'T BREATHE (2016) - dir. fede alvarez
actually made me feel like i had to hold my breath with the characters on screen. definitely scared me and that's a good thing!!!!
JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4 (2023) - dir. chad stalhelski
this is rated 5+ by my friend who does not watch action. like at all. and she fucking loved it. we (and the whole room) were literally laughing and gasping during the whole thing it's so entertaining. the action is mmmmmmmmmm giving me a boner honestly. this is what u get when the director himself is a stuntman and your lead is doing the majority of his stunts. they're so invested and it fucking shows
DJANGO UNCHAINED (2012) - dir. quentin tarantino
blood. very blood. very red. u have been warned. tarantino's dialogue is so mwah he's on some next level shit. i know everybody is always talking about christoph waltz in this but JAMIE FOXX IN THIS????? HE'S LITERALLY THE GUY. HE'S DJANGO. HE'S THE WHOLE FILM. AND THE OUTFIT?????? FUUUUCK HE'S SOOOOO GOOOD AAAAA I LIKE THE WAY U DIE BOY
READY OR NOT (2019) - dir. matt bettinelli-olpin & tyler gillett
SO FUN. AND BLOODY. YAY.
·:* RATING: INTERMEDIATE
UNCUT GEMS (2019) - dir. safdie brothers
adam sandler nation rise up!! the man is actually good just trust me on this! very very exhilarating and fast and intense and yeah i was getting so anxious during it it's great
PARASITE (2019) - dir. bong joon-ho
best picture winner for a fucking reason!! bong joon-ho is on a completely different level. the way it's shot????? ohh i feel all warm and fuzzy just by thinking about it. the dialogue the story itself?????? mmmmmm please watch it you'll never be the same (in a good way)
THE FAVOURITE (2019) - dir. yorgos lanthimos
oh yeah gay as hell everybody go watch it. saw in the cinema four times in a month. it's fucking great. + here is olivia colman's best actress speech bc it's great
ARRIVAL (2016) - dir. denis villeneuve
insane. hypnotic. braingasm. the sound design people were on something bc holy shit i just came?? anyway i've heard people say that they didn't understand it the first time but you know what - it's totally fine if you don't understand it the first time or even the second time or however many times u watch it u can watch it for the soundtrack and the visuals alone hehehe
THE WITCH (2015) - dir. robert eggers
very intense performances, overall very eerie and spooky.
DUNE (2021) - dir. denis villeneuve
godly sound design. like it's fucking crazy. rather slow paced but you will love it nonetheless. there's a lot of lore but it's interesting and it's not as hard (or too much) like i thought it'd be. plus there's an almost fully naked oscar isaac
ANATOMY OF A FALL (2023) - dir. justine triet
oscar worthy performances from everyone. unrequited love trope (i will love this tiny lawyer man myself sandra move aside)
DECISION TO LEAVE (2022) - dir. park whan-wook
very very unique. especially the how it was shot. came out of the cinema and thought about for the rest of the day, couldn't get it out of my head. i also loveddd the characters, the dynamic was so cool.
GOOD TIME (2017) - dir. safdie brothers
who doesn't love having a panic attack? this is what you'll get when u watch this :D it's good though i promise i promise
·:* RATING: FILMBRO 101
BLADE RUNNER 2049 (2017) - dir. denis villeneuve
what did i say about the loser main character? here's another one!! the visuals and the score is insane and not to mention the performances (especially sylvia hoeks who plays luv!!!!! she's terrifying in the best way)
SE7EN (1995) - dir. david fincher
tw: gory. if ur sensitive it might not be a good watch for u. the plot is so cool i'm so sad i couldn't see this in the cinema yk considering i wasn't even born yet smhh i would've loved to have the full experience of the climax.
THE DARK KNIGHT (2008) - dir. christopher nolan
very entertaining!! heath ledger is just... wow. and i know that has been said i'm not original but well it's just the truth. the way he plays the joker mmmmmmmmm scratches my brain fr. i like the part where he does the "disappearing pen" magic trick
THE WOLF OF WALL STREET (2013) - dir. martin scorsese
WHOOOOOWEEE BOYS!! coke and naked women and coke and money and some more money. it's great. after every watch i am CONVINCED that i also need to be doing that. every single time.
FIGHT CLUB (1999) - dir. david fincher
THE NARRATOR NATION RISE UP!!!!! WE ARE ALIVE AND WELL!!! MY BELOVED IKEA BOY!!!!
NIGHTCRAWLER (2014) - dir. dan gilroy
very thrilling! he's not a good guy why are u still watching? ok it's probably just jake gyllenhaal being a very good actor.... the mc is so fucking weird it's almost hypnotizing. also! this isn't a trailer just bc i didn't like the trailer so i put a link of one of the first scenes from the movie i think it gets its point across really fucking well
·:* RATING: SILLY LITTLE MOVIES (VERY EXTREME)
SALTBURN (2023) - dir. emerald fennell
this one is most defintely not for everyone but it's for me ok! very erotic and peculiar and i hadn't been this mesmerized in a minute i was leaning more and more toward my computer screen just because i needed to be in it
MOTHER! (2017) - dir. darren aronofsky
actually this is also one of those, hmm, weird ones, let's just say that. it's very very intense so a big trigger warning for that but there's nothing alike this movie. very one of a kind and you can decide for yourself whether that's a good or a bad thing.
THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER (2016) - dir. yorgos lanthimos
my very first yorgos lanthimos film and i was hooked from the very second the trailer started playing in the cinema, immediately knew it was gonna be a freakshow and i was not disappointed!! very wtf but so good
HEREDITARY (2018) - dir. ari aster
scary. idk what else to tell u. scary in a sense that you'll feel sick in your stomach. sound design goes crazy along with the soundtrack. amaaaazing performances from everyone toni collette the very first mother of all
REVENGE (2017) - dir. coralie fargeat
VERY GNARLY i think that's a good word for it (a tw for rape here bc that was a very hard watch) and later it's very bloody but i fucking loooved the ending the final chase around the house it felt very comical???? funny even though it's really not the moment for giggles
DIRECTORS
wasn't gonna put them here but i fucking will sue me
GUY RITCHIE - snatch, the man from u.n.c.l.e.; THE MOST LIKE ME ok it's the fast pacing, it's the quips it's the music it's the action it's the car chases it's the characters it's the dialogue it's the humor i think i'm repeating myself but i do genuinely think that his films have had such an impact on me and how i imagine things in my head lmao
DENIS VILLENEUVE - blade runner 2049, arrival, prisoners; rather slow paced but intense, it's all about the visuals, the soundtracks always slap
DAVID FINCHER - se7en, zodiac, gone girl; very dark and intense, also rather slow-paced
QUENTIN TARANTINO - inglourious basterds, pulp fiction, django unchained; now i realize that i'm coming off a real filmbro but it is what it is i love these movies with my heart they're very much my style my taste - blood and violence and good jokes
YORGOS LANTHIMOS - the favourite, the killing of a sacred deer, the lobster; literally so weird i fell in love with his work from the first time i saw the killing of a sacred deer (and i'm so excited for his newest one!!!)
SERIES
MINDHUNTER (2017-2019)
oh my god, especially the first season!!!! i think i like it so much bc i love holden i don't think i've seen a character who i resonate with so much in a minute. he's so naive and so curious oh man i love this guy. and bill!!!!!!!!!! i know these people are based on the book (which i loved too btw!) and real life and well i hope these people are having a great time ok. i love holden's and bill's dynamic, how bill kind of lets him do his thing but is still lecturing him about it. while being very caring i love how soft-spoken he is most of the time??? and ahh the way it's shot wait wait also need to mention the whole ed kemper and holden dynamic too (this is also where i feel like me and holden are the same fucking person bc i would too believe everything that man says lmao)(i would too think that we're somewhat buddies) AND THE SOUNDTRACK GODDD THE SOUNDTRACK full of bangers anyway i really really love this show and i hope mr fincher will get his shit together and make the third season too
JUJUTSU KAISEN (2020-)
the animation IS INSANE, like i mentioned before i have a habit of leaning closer and closer to the screen when something is getting exciting and well if i wasn't wearing glasses before i would have to get them now bc i was almost inside the fucking screen ok, not for a second was i able to tear my eyes because so much was happening (in a good way)
TASKMASTER (2015- )
literally the funniest show i almost peed my pants (although i've been wondering how different is european humor - will people from everywhere else also find it hilarious idk you let me know)
my favourite seasons are 4 and 5 and 7!!
SUCCESSION (2018-2023)
sooo funny. so stupid. it's so fucking straightforward it catches you off guard all the time. the shit that comes out of their mouths? hilarious. they're all a bunch of losers and i love them for it. and i love tom.
MANIAC (2018)
life-changing honestly, the idea of it is so cool i was completely obsessed with it when i first saw it (and then i immediately watched it again)
LOVE, DEATH & ROBOTS (2019-)
the first episode i saw was 'sonnie's edge' and let me tell you, i've never been more enthralled!! it's the animation it's the blood it's the gore oh my god it's the horror of it!
season 1 - three robots, the witness, sucker of souls, beyond the aquila rift, helping hand, the secret war
season 2 - pop squad (hehe on a side note one of the greatest voice actors, nolan north, is in this), the tall grass, the drowned giant
season 3 - bad travellling (directed by david fincher btw)
AMERICAN HORROR STORY: HOTEL (2015)
this season specifically because - lady gaga, lady gaga as a vampire, lady gaga covered in blood, lady gaga in a suit, lady gaga with bleached eyebrows, angela bassett, angela bassett's arms, angela bassett's outfits, angela bassett and lady gaga kissing. enough said.
BLUE EYE SAMURAI (2023)
the animation!!!!!! i love when animation has fighting in it and this was just great. very good action scenes, very bloody and very brutal. PLUS such an amazing main character????? not your typical badass, oh no she definitely got her fucking ass beat all the time but she just kept going. actually shoutout to all of the side characters too they were all so good i loved them + my favourite episode of the season was ep4

WISH appears to be tracking well. Pre-sales beating those of ENCANTO and STRANGE WORLD. The former, released as Delta was proving to be a problem, and the latter an neglected film.
But this is promising. Not that the old outdated box office model matters in the long run, but I want to see a Disney-released animated movie take this W for once. Pixar's ELEMENTAL merely eked by and was deemed successful by the company, so why not end the centennial year with another animated success? And from Walt Disney Animation Studios no less?
"No marketing" indeed. I heard that latest trailer racked up over 66m hits or something?
I guess WISH does have the juice. Maybe! While very-online people jeer at the way the villain song sounds, or complain about how much they can't stand the talking goat, or the art style, or just about everything else... If this thing opens very well, it'll just show who the marketing for these films has always been for... Not you, and not me.
Flashback to summer 2010... I had seen the teaser for TANGLED, the movie that arguably got this whole ball rolling. The first Disney Animation movie to truly make some big cash in the post-Michael Eisner/David Stainton era (as in, post-CHICKEN LITTLE). MEET THE ROBINSONS lost money, BOLT didn't really cut it, and THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG barely eked out. TANGLED became the studio's second highest-earning movie, unadjusted, behind THE LION KING.
I remember. I was 17 1/2 when I saw the teaser roll before TOY STORY 3... And I remember thinking that it looked pretty... Well... BAD! "She's been grounded for like... Ever!" What was this? Disney's embarrassingly belated answer to SHREK? A cynical and hip fairy tale adaptation? Never mind that I was already miffed at the sexist title change that had been reported earlier. The poster seemed to ram it all home, too, an image of Rapunzel and Flynn/Eugene looking like they had an attitude... I was afraid it'd be a step back from the progress that was made with ROBINSONS, BOLT, and FROG... A lot of people online at the time seemed to echo similar sentiments...
The proper trailer debuted around September. I also wasn't impressed.
Then I had taken a look at the Japanese trailer. Okay, this looks pretty good! Possibly great!
The ending to this story is very predictable. I ended up really liking TANGLED.
And as bad as I thought those trailers were, TANGLED opened pretty well and had fantastic legs during the holiday season of 2010. Audiences liked those trailers and TV spots and promo materials.
Lather. Rinse. Repeat...
For FROZEN. "What is this? TANGLED on Ice? TANGLED meets ICE AGE??" People on twitter **hated** that Olaf and Sven ice lake antics teaser... But when I saw it play before MONSTERS UNIVERSITY that summer, the packed auditorium howled with laughter! FROZEN went on to become one of the highest grossing animated movies of all-time.
Lather. Rinse. Repeat...
For ZOOTOPIA. "What is this? CHICKEN LITTLE?" "This looks like a DreamWorks movie!" ZOOTOPIA made a billion worldwide, rare for an original movie like that.
Lather. Rinse. Repeat...
For RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET. "This looks like Disney's EMOJI MOVIE!" "All this product placement!" RALPH BREAKS outgrossed the original and made half a billion.
You get my drift? The marketing materials are made for your average joe, not us. Getting them to give a cartoon the time of the day is the real challenge, and that's who Disney goes for. Sometimes they're quite successful at it: Every CG film they released from TANGLED to FROZEN II, 2010 to 2019, made a lot of money theatrically each time out! Sometimes they're not. BOLT didn't get folks interested in fall 2008, and STRANGE WORLD's few trailers and TV spots last autumn just didn't appeal to almost anybody. Throw in COVID's effects on everything, how Disney+ was the perfect storm for families tight on money and not willing to gamble on a probably shit theatrical experience, etc....
And if WISH opens pretty good, it'll show that they - the marketing department - did their job right for once. And without the actors - such as Chris Pine - to help promote the movie, at that.
But tracking is usually funky for animated movies, so it's hard to say how WISH will open. But in the cutthroat world of box office, a model that's still going today for some strange reason, it's gotta make a real impression in its first 3 days, 5 days because this is a pre-Thanksgiving release.
Anyways, I want to see a WDAS movie "break even" per this old-ass model, for once. We haven't seen a film of theirs do that since FROZEN II, four years ago. Which is also a Chris Buck-directed movie, also a Jennifer Lee-written movie.
Now to hope ELIO from Pixar, after ELEMENTAL barely making it through, does good this coming spring.

The Changing Face of Camping
I started writing this post back in mid June when we were just back from a short 2 night camping trip and again I was struck by how much camping has changed, in both our personal style of camping, and the ethnic and gender make up of today’s campers. I grew up camping, mainly in rented small trailers then in our own Apache hard shelled tent trailer style. As an adult I spent years, (with friends, then with my husband), tenting, moving from a cheap foamie, to coveted thermarests, and finally graduating to an inflatable queen size mattress that had to be largely inflated inside of our four season North Face tent as once inflated, it wouldn’t fit inside the door. We felt like we were camping in luxury.
Then in the autumn of 2013 the unthinkable happened: we bought a new-to-us travel trailer, and the camping world changed. Suddenly we had a fridge, a freezer, a Queen size bed, a bathroom, and a forced air heater. We poo-pooed weather as we were warm and dry! In the first few years we took some epic trips: Yellowstone/Grand Teton, down to Yosemite, over to the Calgary Stampede returning via Prince George, as well as weekend and multi-day trips locally around Vancouver Island. The trailer has saved our bacon as well, as we lived a month in it before moving to Scotland in 2017, then we lived in it for 3 months when we had to return to Canada unexpectedly. We stayed in it for a couple of months again before heading our travelling in 2019, and then COVID hit! Our house was on year 3 of a 3 year unbreakable lease to the Crown, and the good old trailer came to the rescue…for 5.5 months we resided in it. Although we’re actively now looking for a newer trailer, this grand old lady will forever have a special place in our hearts.
However, it was during the times we lived in our trailer, that we gained a new perspective. We had no idea that so many people, (employed people), were living full time in travel trailers, or motor homes. Not just retired folks who decided to sell everything and embrace the open road, but people trying to save money for a few years while they saved for a down payment. This was back in 2019, and yet today we saw some of those same people still in their RV. With property values soaring during COVID combined with interest rate hikes, those same people are even further away from their goal. It was depressing to see. Here are a few photos of our trailer as our home back in 2020…
However, we’re back on the road now, and again we’re seeing new to camping campers. During the worst of the pandemic, when travel was verboten, people who had never camped before gave it a go. We saw mainly people from Asian countries, and China, out camping for the first time. It was evident as everything was brand new, and there was a lot of discussion, (not in English), about which pole went where in an out of the box tent, as well as how to attach a propane bottle to a brand new stove. It was inspiring to see people embracing something obviously so foreign, (but if you’ve already embraced a new country so foreign to your own, then what’s a little camping challenge, right?) This current trip we’re also seeing a lot of women camping: single women, women with friends/sisters/partners. As a women who camped for many years with my girlfriends, it’s reignited memories of those fabulous trips, as well as giving me a sense of happiness watching women assert their independence at a time when so much of it is under attack in various places in the world.
Anyway, I’m happy to be back camping, (even though yesterday I towed for 10 hours due to a big accident on the I-5), and I’m happy to see new faces embracing camping, (even though it means I’m having a more difficult time getting camping spots). I think getting outdoors is good for all of us.
I would sign off “until next time”, but I know there are a few older drafts backed up here, and while I have internet, and have a day of laundry, I’ll be trying to catch up…

Day 61 - to Oseja de Santambre
A couple of cars arrived late last evening, both of guys up from Madrid for a weekend in the mountains. It really is a superb location, and the hostel is a big part of that as well. Both groups left just before 9 this morning, which is very early for the Spanish, but the weather was due to change mid-afternoon.
I attended to the usual chores, emptied waste water, filled up with fresh water, got rid of the recycling, and was away, again to the east, and into the Picos de Europe National Park. I have been here twice before, but both times in the north. At this time of year, there is significantly more sun on the south side of the mountains.
Way back when I was working in Lytham, I think 2003, I came over one Easter week with a hire car from the airport and camping gear. It rained on and off all week, but some of the walking was good. The thing I remember the most, was that all the bars and restaurants were so empty, and their staff so surprised anyone was there.
The other time was autumn 2019, travelling in the T5 that I had at the time. I had been in the Pyrenees, and as winter got closer, took a self catering apartment in the incredibly situated village of Tresviso.
Initially I headed for Oseja de Sajambre, and then beyond, on a spectacular mountain road, to Soto de Sajambre, photo above. There was a hike, up to a pasture at 1400 metres at the Vegebaño pass, that I wanted to do. Originally I was going to do this tomorrow, but the weather was still really good, and I arrived there earlier than I thought I would, so I went for it today. Though longer in distance than what I have been doing this week, at 9 miles, it was much easier going, and I was there and back, with a leisurely lunch the the pass, in four hours.
Up at the pass there are a few old fincas, converted from shepherd’s huts years ago, before it became prohibited to to make such conversions in the National Park. They look tremendous, below, because there is so few of them, and they still very much fit in with the environment.
I descended the road back into Oseja for the night. It’s a Friday, and a rugby night, and the 4G signal was strong. Also, which I didn’t know at the time, there are two good bars, directly opposite each other, to which I ventured in the early evening.
There was a Dutch guy, a solo traveler, in a van already there. He was out on a sunlounger in just speedos. By this time, the weather hadn’t changed, but the front was on its way through. He had a new pre-converted campervan worth about 70K, with hydraulic stands underneath to make it level. Also a covered trailer, with two motorbikes and an electric bicycle. I went over to say hello, determined not to prejudge, but it was as I might have guessed, if I had allowed myself to. So I kept my distance. As I left to walk into the village for a beer, he was doing yoga and being watched by pretty much the whole population of the locals.
And to finish, a pair of Mediterranean firebugs I spotted. They are not that rare, and can even be seen in the UK, but more so in warmer climates. They are easy to identify with the black spots and triangle and the red backs. This pair are mating, hence linked, and therefore travelling together, as mating can last up to 7 days..

The trailer for 'The Marvels' reveals the MCU's new team of intergalactic superheroes
Greater, further. Faster. Together. The first trailer for "The Marvels" has just descended from the spinning S.A.B.E.R. Space Station in low-Earth orbit, which is a zero-gravity environment. This vibrant sneak look, which was just revealed on Tuesday's (April 11) ABC "Good Morning America" broadcast, shows Brie Larson's Captain Marvel, a.k.a. Carol Danvers, returning after her divisive performance as the space-traveling superhero and sporadic Avenger in 2019's "Captain Marvel." On November 10, 2023, this film, the 33rd to be released in the continually growing Marvel Cinematic Universe, hits theatres. Here, Iman Vellani, who played Kamala Khan in "Ms. Marvel," the Disney+ series about a Pakistani teen who gains ancient electrifying powers from a magical bangle, and Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau/Photon, who was last seen gaining mutant skills in the Disney+ series "WandaVision," are waiting for Larson as she races in to meet them. Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel has recovered her identity from the oppressive Kree in Marvel Studios' "The Marvels" and exacted revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unexpected outcomes force Carol to shoulder the burden of a cosmos in disorder. As Carol's duties send her to a weird wormhole connected to a Kree revolutionary, her powers mix with those of Jersey City superfan Kamala Khan, or Ms. Marvel, and Carol's estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. As "The Marvels," this unlikely three will have to cooperate and learn to work as a team to preserve the universe. The superhero body-swapping trio known as Captain Marvel will be explored in further detail in the upcoming film "The Marvels," which will be directed by Nia DaCosta ("Candyman"). Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson, will serve as the team's commanding officer. During the broadcast of the trailer on Good Morning America, Larson gave fans a preview of what they can anticipate from the humorous Marvel Studios flick when it releases this autumn (opens in new tab). "The first one told her identity's history. It is now delving deeper into some of the difficulties, "She disclosed. "that she is far more complex than that and that there are also negative aspects to her. That a hero can be viewed as someone who doesn't always make the correct choices." On November 10, 2023, "The Marvels" leaps onto the big screen. Read the full article

Happy Birthday Max Caulfield!📸❤️✨
Happy Autumn everyone!!!🍂💛✨
Due to some time and work issues, I haven't been able to finish this beautiful Max!Witch, BUT I want to show the trailer, which is more of a color and lineart test. It's in a totally zero process, the colors and the linear are going to change completely.
The other picture is a comparison of Max!Witch I drew in 2019 (right side) and the one I'm working on now. Seeing this makes me so happy because I see the progress of 3 years that I have had and I feel very proud of myself.🍂💛✨

The year is 2019. There's an adaptation of Persuasion in pre-production, with Joel Fry and Sarah Snooks as leads. You are cautiously optimistic. The trailer for Autumn de Wilde's Emma has dropped and while you may have a slight apprehension, you are enjoying the love of detail and period aesthetics, and you are looking forward to it.

i read your long pigeon poop post, and after some poking around online i saw that a loft in melbourne australia failed. do you have any idea why that is?
Oh... my fucking God. I am so furious.
Look at this thing!
$70,000 went into this monstrosity?
It looks like they converted a fucking water tower by punching holes in it and welding on entryways shaped like the stereotypical toddler’s first house drawing!
Who fucking researched this?!
Was it designed by a committee purely by aesthetic?!
Here is an article I found on it’s decomission and removal.
https://www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/melbourne-city-councils-70000-pigeon-loft-turned-into-scrap-metal-20160724-gqcmsc.html
According to the pigeon expert quoted in this article:
“Frank Hayes is the president of the Australian National Pigeon Association. While his group is mostly interested in show pigeons, a different breed to the city pests, he says it was fairly predictable the coop idea was never going to work.”
“ "The nature of the pigeon is that they find a home and they stick with it. So finding them somewhere else to go is a bit of a dream," said Mr Hayes.”
“ "Trying to shift them is one big headache. It's a worldwide problem and no one has ever figured out how to deal with it." ”
LOOK at this structure!!!
It’s made of fucking METAL!!!
In AUSTRAILIA!!!
In the fucking OPEN!!!!
From this charming article:
http://melbournedailyphotodaily.blogspot.com/2011/03/pigeon-loft-batman-park.html
“The loft is painted with light coloured corrosion resistant to reflect the heat and minimise internal over-heating. It houses two hundred nesting boxes for pigeon breeding. Eggs laid will be replaced with artificial eggs intended as a humane way to control and reduce pigeon numbers.”
That is a metal structure in the Melbourne sun...
No amount of Paint is gonna make that less an oven.
And I can’t imagine you can add anything to paint to make it corrosion resistant that isn’t noxious in a small space when the metal under it heats up.
“Bird feeding around the loft base is permitted to attract birds out of the CBD to this area. Bird feeding is not permitted in any other area around the CBD.”
But the city council is not actually providing the birds with good quality fed...
“... and no one has ever figured out how to deal with it."
No one, you ignorant twit?
NO ONE?!?!
Here is the site of a successful branch of the German Stadttauben Projekt, translated:
https://stadttauben-stuttgart.de/
“The Stuttgart pigeon project
Dear prospective customers,
nice that you found our homepage. We would like to introduce our project to you on the following pages:
The Stuttgart City Pigeon Project is an animal welfare-friendly concept for regulating and reducing city pigeons for the benefit of people and animals. We operate several supervised pigeon shots in the Stuttgart city area, in which the pigeons are cared for and their eggs are exchanged for dummies so that no offspring hatch. By the end of 2019, there had been well over 45,000 eggs. By feeding grain mixtures in our shots, the animals are no longer forced to look for food on the streets and squares in the area. They spend 80% of the day and the entire night in the dovecote. Ergo - your droppings also stay there and no longer land on roofs or balconies.
We were awarded the Baden-Württemberg State Animal Protection Award 2015 for our commitment .
The city pigeon is one of the most successful residents of the urban living space and today populates all major cities worldwide. It is the free-living descendant of the wild rock pigeons from the coastal and mountain areas in Africa and Eurasia. Long ago, the rock pigeons were domesticated by humans primarily for the purpose of meat production and thus also carried to our latitudes and cities. In modern times, the stock of the archetypal rock pigeon increasingly mixed with breeding, racing and sports pigeons that either escaped, were abandoned or, exhausted by exhausting competitive flights, ran aground in the cities. Today's city pigeons are the overgrown children and children's children of these rock, breeding and sports pigeons.
In cooperation with the state capital of Stuttgart, the Tierschutzverein Stuttgart und Umgebung eV launched the pigeon project in 2008. The cooperation was formed with the aim of bringing about a permanent and humane solution to the city pigeon problem.
The concept of the Federal Working Group for City Pigeons or the so-called * Augsburg Model * was helpful. It is based on scientific publications, practical experience and has already been successfully recommended by several federal states such as Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Württemberg. Today it is implemented in more than 80 German cities and towns. For example, there are pigeon houses looked after in Aachen, Augsburg, Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt, Saarbrücken and Wuppertal.
We aim for a small, supervised and healthy pigeon population in Stuttgart. Then the image of the city pigeon may rise again. Because healthy animals, which have a permanent home and receive animal feed, do not bother anyone!”

Health hazard facts
A health hazard due to pigeons flying around, running and sitting can be largely excluded. New scientific studies have shown (again) that pathogens that may be contained in the pigeon droppings are usually bird-specific and are therefore not transmitted to humans. This was confirmed in 1995 by the Federal Ministry of Health.
The general classification of the pigeon as a pest was withdrawn by the Federal Institute for Consumer Health Protection back in 1989 on the basis of research results at the time and the opinion from 2001.
Feed facts about pigeons
Feeding pigeons in Stuttgart is prohibited on public land. Well-meaning pigeon friends increase the population density of the city pigeons by regular feeding in the same place, without offering the additionally attracted animals sleeping and nesting places where they are tolerated or the clutch can be exchanged. This creates people who work there or often live more pigeon hate and more pigeon misery.
Above all, too many food scraps are thrown away on the streets and squares of the city! This waste is mostly not compatible with pigeons. They lead to illnesses, shortages and thus, among other things, to the unsightly liquid starvation. Nevertheless, due to the scarcity of bird-friendly feed in cities, these human foods are usually the main basis for the feeding of city pigeons, but their organism is designed for pure hard grain feed. So this means sick pigeon populations that nonetheless reproduce disproportionately due to their (pet) genes raised by humans.
If you would like to help sustainably, please contact us. Only other supervised dovecotes in the city area (including food and egg exchange) start at the root of the "problem". We welcome any support!”
