I can't put two and two together because all she told me was it was the guy I made out with on New Year's and my DUMBASS FORGOT WHO HE IS.

You're using the lingo right (as always) I'm probably around your age too, so don't worry too much about it.

Ugh, Ada supermodel... I should be happy but that only ever means weird male fans and girl fans that would dox me if I ever was down to earth about Ada as a person. I love her, but I also like the little circle of fans local to us right now. Since she's supermodel status now, she's probably going to be in Raccoon less and less. You know how the modeling life is.

Please don't stalk ANYONE. You don't need to stalk me down. If you know who I am, then surely you'll meet me eventually. Considering your language, we've probably already met before. Considering also the fact that you told me not to run off when you asked me for your number... I have a general idea of who you are as well. I still like writing letters to you, so I'd appreciate it if you just pursued me outside of the letters if you're really that desperate. I find dating face-to-face much better than through letters anyway. Though, you are going to have to be fairly obvious. All of my friends claim I'm dumb in the head when it comes to my own romantic life. I only ever notice people dating when it's others.

"You'll probably have to stop writing to your penpal then."

"They know who I am now anyway, so it doesn't matter. They'll probably find me in the next three months."

"You have that kind of confidence?"

"Yes. Ada. My penpal will chase me, and you can go chase your dreams. You deserve to." You toss your laptop to the side, wrapping your arms around her neck. "I'm happy I got to be in your life for so long. I'll only continue to stay, so have peace and keep going."

InuKag were together for a whole year before RT retconned it.

(Reposted from my Twitter. And as a starting disclaimer, yes, I know this was retconned when Kagome had a graduation chapter, but I still enjoy thinking about it.) So I've done a little theory crafting, and I really think InuKag were traveling together a long time before they met their other friends. Possibly even a year before Miroku. Thanks to color versions of pages, we can guess that the manga starts in autumn. Leaf color, falling leaves, the villagers harvesting extra thatch for their homes, and everyone having foggy breath. (This also means Kagome's birthday is probably in autumn!)

The Blank Woman and Sesshoumaru seem to be in winter, because a lot of the trees are finally bare, and Kagome's dressing warmer. Note that Japanese flying squirrels do not hibernate. Though I'll admit this one has less evidence, it seems to match up.

The frog prince arc is spring. Again easy thanks to color pages, and Kagome finally being able to swim.

After meeting Shippou we transition into summer for the poltergeist and spider arcs. Again, Kagome's attire makes this obvious, with her sundresses and short-sleeved summer uniform while eating ice cream. Also the people doing fireworks. Nazuna is also picking Chinese Bellflowers, which are a summer bloom.

I'm guessing Kikyou's resurrection is either late summer or early fall due to the field of pampas grass and the dragonflies.

And we're back around to proper autumn by Miroku's intro chapter. Fallen leaves, hot spring monkeys, and persimmons!

So there you have it! They were "alone" together (sans Shippou lol) for an entire year! I think this makes a lot of things make more sense, like Inuyasha almost kissing her "already" and realizing he likes her by then. There was more one-on-one bonding than we thought! Again, I'm not trying to claim this as absolute canon, since I'm aware Rumiko retconned it later to have Kagome graduate near the end of the series. I hope it hasn't come off as me trying to do anything but point out how the seasons initially played out.

IM just curious, can you talk about gotei 13 and zero divisions'flower symbolism in BLEACH ?

I don't know that there's much to add outside of canon. I think Kubo mentions in various supplemental materials what his reasoning was, and I believe they all line up with pretty standard Japanese floriography, i.e. hanakotoba[花言葉] lit. "flower language."

I was cross referencing things with the Bleach wiki and I realize that I have no idea where Kubo actually confirmed his preferred/intended readings for there, and the wiki doesn't have any citations on it (because of course they don't) so I'm just going to list everything I found on hanakotoba.com and point out anything that feels appropriate...

Kiku[菊]: Chrysanthemum(Chrysanthemum morifolium)

Noble/Virtuous/Lofty

Truth (White chrysanthemum specifically)

It is also more broadly associated with Longevity, Rejuvenation, and Royalty as it is the crest of the royal family of Japan. Its use with 1st division is mostly likely just evoking a seat of authority rather than flower language.

Really just laser focusing in on Sui Feng specifically here. Aptly reflects her whole thing with Yoruichi, although I don't remember offhand when the first time we actually see 2nd division's flower insignia specifically. I do know we don't even really see Omaeda properly until right before the execution (and the lt. badges are the only place we see the flowers) so it could also have been assigned after their big fight and hsitory/relationship reveal.

Tsubaki[椿]: Camellia(Camellia japonica)

The red tsubaki is also kind of a classically samurai associated flower on its own, hanakotoba not withstanding. When the camellia dies the flowers drop off their stems without wilting and it's seen as a kind of metaphor for samurai ethics; Better to die quickly and with your good image intact than suffer the indignity of a prolonged wilting.

This I assume is a kind of adjacent meaning to "Pride/Honor" and "Unwavering elegance." And certainly that kind of fixation on the appearance of honor and dignity suites Byakuya's slavish devotion to law and propriety even at the cost of his wife's dying wishes, and indeed any pretense of familial obligation to Rukia as his adopted sister.

Gokurakuchou-ka[極楽鳥花]: Bird-of-paradise(Strelitzia reginae​)

It took me a moment to really parse this. Most elaborations I found just danced around terms for a "fop" or a "dandy" in describing what I eventually boiled down to just "a man concerned with his appearance" so the particular tone of vanity was misleading. But I think the joke is just that Komamura hiding his wolf head under a series of masks and helmets does indeed count as "concern with appearance" just not in the otherwise implied flamboyant way.

Also the term "pretentious love" sort of fits with Tetsuzaemon's overwrought yakuza-like loyalty and deference to Komamura as his boss. It's not a simple modest devotion it's overplayed and loud and draped in pomp and ritual. He isn't just devoted in action, he has to give the express appearance of devotion as well.

I even told myself when I was shuffling the images around, "remember you always screw up komamura and shunsui's flowers, so whatever your instinct is, remember to switch that." And apparently that means i actually had it right first and actively made it wrong

Well, in the very least this makes the various terms floating around like "dandy" and "fop" make much more direct sense, as Shunsui is very much a fashionable and frivolous personality when he's first introduced...

I don't really know what to make of this... The specificity of White Poppy means the reading really should be "Death" or "Sleep" and I guess that kinda ties into Tousen losing his friend. But that feels like a stupidly loose connection. On the other hand the more general meaning of the poppy as "compassion/pity/sympathy" seems to match more of Tousen's actual relationships with his dead friend, with Komamura, and even to a lesser degree with Hisagi.

To "forget" or be lost in "oblivion" however feels like a very knowing and ominous point in the direction of Tousen having lost his way and forgotten himself in his quest for justice.

Suisen[水仙]: Daffodil(Narcissus tazetta)

Another rather personal one. The general tone of Respect and Reverence and High Esteem could maybe refer to Hitsugaya's need to be taken seriously despite his age and stature, but that feels like loose and far too general fit at best. His unrequited love for Hinamori however suits this far better.

So the "Relief/Solace/etc..." bit certainly seems to fit Ukitake's demeanor as his terminal illness does indeed require him to frequently take an aside to lie down. But I was surprised to find that the "Hope/Desire/etc..." reading appeared here as well as with the Ayame, and I don't think it's coincidence that Kyoraku and Ukitake have matching themed flowers for their divisions.

Incidentally this also ties into Kaien as lt. since the Shiba name echos this same meaning of "Ambition".

Jinchou-ge[沈丁花]: Winter Daphne(Daphne odora)

This one seems pretty obvious. "Glory" and "Indestructible" describe their reputation well enough, although they turned out to be far from indestructible, unfortunately.

It always kind of confused me that Kubo put their flower insignia inside the Gotei diamond, not only because they aren't supposed to be part of the gotei, but because it just seemed to break so many other design patterns... but then I realized that the only parts of the shinigami uniforms where the flowers are ever visible are on lt. badges(limiter stamps and the little sewn in tags being hidden) and there weren't any lieutenants in the royal guard.

Feels like a halfbaked idea to slap them on the coats just to make sure they show up somewhere, but then so was most of their introduction and role in the plot.

Hanakotoba in Sketch (BNHA ED 10):

The flower featured in bnha's 10th ending theme song is called "Gentiana scabra" and is more commonly known the the "Japanese Gentian" or "Autumn Bellflower". In Japanese the the flower is named Rindou (竜胆) or Ryuutan (竜胆).

This flower can represent "with justice I am assured of victory", "honesty" as well as "loving someone who is filled with sorrow". These meanings resonate with the Todoroki family storyline.

Dabi aka Touya Todoroki strives to exact justice upon his father by exposing his misdeeds to the public. Heroes are supposed to be enforces of justice and paradigms of honesty and transparency. However, in pursuing his goals Endevour has done many things that would jeopardize his career and public standing. Dabi seeks to bring to light these misdeeds in order to ruin his father's career as revenge for the agony and pain he endured in his childhood.

In other words, Dabi believes he is assured of victory in this plight because his actions are done in the name of justice. The flower's blue colour could also imply a reference to Dabi's blue flames.

Chapter 24 - North Star

Summary: With summer vacation coming to a close and Y/N's impending departure looming, she and George create a binding spell

Hogwarts, Autumn 1995

George trudged outside, flexing his stiff hands, causing the wounds on his knuckles to bleed again. Grinding his teeth, he ignored the pain and turned toward the Black Lake, ruminating over the day's events. Anyone with two brain cells to rub together knew Malfoy got what he deserved. It'd been a long time coming, and today, he crossed a line. But, of course, Professor Umbridge didn't see it that way, and now George, Harry, and Fred were banned from Quidditch for life.

"Fucking pink toad," George muttered to himself.

The wind picked up, bringing with it the scent of rain. George heaved a sigh. He wouldn’t be out here braving the impending rainstorm if it weren't for Angelina. When he left, she and Fred were on the verge of breaking up. She was livid that they'd gotten banned and had no problem letting everyone, especially Fred, Harry, and himself know just how she felt.

So, he left. The last thing he needed was to be told repeatedly how stupid he was.

George plopped down on his and Y/N's favorite spot by the lake, all his energy draining away, leaving him empty and withdrawn. He missed Y/N terribly, especially in moments like this, when the world lay heavy on his shoulders. Her steadfast reassurance was what he needed most right now. She would know exactly what to say to calm his frayed nerves.

George reached for the next best thing and pulled out the silver locket that hung around his neck. He traced the engraved star with his thumb while a gentle warmth spread through him, dulling his heartache. For a brief moment, the faint scent of sandalwood and roses flooded his senses.

Bringing the talisman to his lips, he gave it a single kiss before tucking it back under his shirt and laying down in the grass to watch the storm clouds roll in.

Muggle London, Late July 1995

George and Y/N made their way through the bustling crowds. He'd convinced Fred to let him use a small amount of the winnings Harry gave them to buy Y/N a little something before she left.

"I can't believe Molly was ok with this," Y/N said, dodging a gaggle of muggle teenagers taking up half the sidewalk.

"She doesn't know."

"What?" Y/N stopped dead in her tracks, causing the man behind her to curse when he almost slammed into her.

"Sorry, so sorry," she apologized. The man muttered under his breath and hurried past her.

"C'mon, love." George said, taking Y/N's hand. "We're nearly there."

"Where is there?" she asked. Her boyfriend had been very secretive about the whole trip. And now, upon finding out that Mrs. Weasley had no idea what was going on, she began to worry. With Death Eaters lurking in the shadows, their little excursion wasn't entirely safe. "Please tell me Fred knows, at least?" She asked, hoping someone knew where they were going in case something happened.

"Of course he does, and so does Ginny. Sirius, too. He kept mum distracted so we could get out the door."

"Oh good," she said just before another thought occurred to her. "Wait, how are we supposed to get back in? Do we have a set time? You know she watches that door like a hawk."

George shrugged. "We'll already be done and back. What can she do? Yell at us?"

Y/N glared at him. Molly was already furious. Three days ago, she found out they were sleeping together and damn near blew the roof off the place. Even Kreacher ducked for cover. Then, George refusing to budge an inch on the matter, infuriated her even more. Discovering they'd snuck out would only make matters worse.

Y/N sighed. "George Weasley, you're going to be the death of me."

Ilvermorny - Autumn 1995

It had been a long day. Master Bellflower had kept her and the other two hemalurgy apprentices late, leaving her little time to shower and change before rushing to dinner, followed by the planning meeting for the senior prank.

It, too, ran late. Very late.

Y/N lay in bed, exhausted, but wide awake. She wasn't used to having the bed to herself anymore, having gotten used to sleeping next to George every night, even if he did hog the bed sometimes. When they weren't cuddling, her boyfriend seemed to liquify and spread out to fill up all available space. The memory brought a rueful smile to her face. Rolling onto her back, she pulled the locket from underneath her night shirt. It felt a little warmer than usual, but considering that she was under a mountain of blankets, she thought nothing of it. His comforting scent of gunpowder and caramel encompassed her. Closing her eyes, she pretended he was there beside her, and soon, she was fast asleep.

The sun was cresting the horizon when Y/N awoke with a start, feeling as though something was wrong. It took her a moment to realize her locket was no longer simply warm but burning hot. It'd never done that before. Throwing her blankets off, she tossed on her robe and slippers. Glancing at the clock, she had an hour before she needed to get ready for the day. Perfect. Just enough time to pen a letter to George and send it on its way.

12 Grimmauld Place, one week before Y/N's departure

George and Y/N sat on the bed facing each other. Between them lay a knife, a piece of parchment upon which was a spell they had written together, and on either side two silver lockets. The lockets were not the gifts he'd had in mind when he took her shopping, but the moment he saw them, he knew that's what they'd come for.

His mind drifted back to the night over spring break when he and Y/N lay outside at the Burrow, watching the stars.

"That's Venus," Y/N had pointed out. "The evening star. She shines first. She shines brightest. And she shines longest. Perhaps that's why she was named after the Goddess of Love. A hope that her light would shine down and bless all the loves of this world for all time."

George smiled and squeezed her hand.

"And that one is Polaris," she pointed out another sparkling point in the sky. "Also, known as the North Star. It moves in a very small circle around the North Pole, while all the other stars rotate around it. Because it appears stationary, muggle seafarers used to use it to find true North. So, if you're ever lost, look for Polaris. It will guide you home."

He was about to tell Y/N that she was his North Star, but then Harry joined them, and he completely forgot about it until he saw the matching lockets.

"Hey you." Y/N's soft touch and gentle voice brought him back to the present. "Ready?"

George nodded. As one, they rose, lighting the candles sunwise around the room before returning to the bed. Sitting side by side, both holding the parchment, they spoke in unison.

You are my North Star.

My compass points to you, guiding me home.

Together, we will build a bridge to one another,

in a place between Awake and Dreaming,

between Matter and Spirit,

between what was, what is, and what is to come.

Then, taking the knife, they cut a small lock from one another's hair and placed them inside each other's locket.

Holding the lockets in the palm of their hands, Y/N spoke first. "I am Y/N L/N, and this is now my link to George Weasley."

George followed, enunciating the words with great care. The moment he spoke the final syllable, something shifted. It wasn't showy like most magic. No flashing lights or loud bangs. It was an inner shift. Subtle and quiet. And yet they could feel the delicate string now connecting them to one another.

He leaned forward to kiss her when the door swung open, causing them both to jump. They'd forgotten to lock the door.

Molly tossed two letters at them before rolling her eyes at all the lit candles and slamming the door shut.

George and Y/N looked down at the letters. In their hands were two identical warnings against underage magic from the Ministery.

They looked at each other and giggled.

"Oops."

I just wanted to ask since flowers have different meanings based on culture what do rei's flowers she had in the hospital represent?

Hi! I’m doing okay, thank you.

I can’t really answer about the cultural aspect because I’m not japanese and I’d never heard about this flower before bnha. I’m also no expert on plants or flower language, but I didn’t want to answer this with a simple “I don’t know” so I did a quick google search. 

take all of what follows with a grain of salt because I’m basing it off a single (if thorough) article in japanese, which I inputted in a machine translator (DeepL, which is at least a much better tool than google). Sorry about that too btw but I didn’t have the spoons to approach such a huge text with my current skill level. I double-checked the relevant bits with a dictionary, at least! 

So, here are some highlights: 

-it’s apparently called Gentian in English. Also known as Autumn Bellflower. It blooms between September and November and as such it’s associated with the arrival of fall. It also seems to grow wild,

which aligns with what we’ve seen in the flashbacks. Rei comes across a bush of wild rindou and stops to watch them, and Enji notices 

-It seems to me that Hori chose this flower in particular for fairly straightforward reasons. Quoting from the abovementioned source:  “Although it is tolerant of cold, it does not fare well in hot weather.” Which is almost word by word canon text from this scene: 

This feeling is further emphasized by the fact that when Enji narrates his first meeting with Rei, the flowers appear again exactly when he’s saying this about her temperament: 

The thematic point here is less the flowers themselves imho, and more the dichotomy between ice and fire as metaphors of opposite dispositions. Throughout the story, fire is repeatedly associated with hotheadedness, with passion, with strong and overflowing, irrational feelings. Think of Shouto summoning his flames for the first time in years when he’s in emotional turmoil during the sports festival. Think of Touya going out in a blazing tornado when he can’t stop crying. And then compare it to Shouto’s aloof, ice-prince persona, to his emotional repression back when he only used his ice side. Fire is thematically attached to impulsiveness, to the strong pull of emotions. Ice, instead, is typically associated with self-restraint, willpower and cool-headed principles.

Enji compares Rei to ice because she’s able to go along with the arranged marriage despite knowing it was a contract to bear Enji’s children. In other words, she’s ice because she’s able to remove her emotions from her choice, and thus face it with her head held high. She’s rational, calm and collected about it. 

But, and here’s where the flowers come in, ice is strong in winter but brittle in the heat. Rei’s disposition makes her strong, yes, but also all the more susceptible to her husband’s opposite nature. 

I think that’s all there is to it, really. Horikoshi doesn’t strike me as the kind of author who goes above and beyond to add complex and cryptic symbolism to his writing. His style is generally pretty transparent, when he adds any symbolism at all. See the gripping hands as a metaphor for abuse, the hands reaching out as a metaphor for help, and the eating around a dinner table together as a way to hint towards an eventual family reconnection. Hori isn’t particularly subtle imho, so that’s why I never really bothered delving deep into hanakotoba. 

However, if you wanted to give it a shot anyway, here’s what the same article says about it: 

“The language of gentian flowers includes "victory," "sense of justice," "stand by you in your sorrow," and "lonely love. “Victory" and "a sense of justice" are derived from the fact that gentian has been used as a medicinal herb since ancient times and is associated with the image of "overcoming illness”. The words "to be close to your sorrow" and "lonely love" seem to be derived from the fact that it grows wild by itself without growing in clusters. In addition, the words "full confidence" and "chastity" are given to the purple and white gentian, respectively.” [Source]  

I personally consider this part a bit more of a stretch, but if we wanted to take the hanakotoba approach, maybe Horikoshi also chose this flower to show Rei’s progress towards recovery. After all, she is holding it while she faces Enji in that hospital room:

She’s no longer dwelling on her sadness, on her sorrows, but overcoming it. At this point, she's no longer an inpatient in a mental hospital, but she's facing her fears head on. There's a determined glint in her eyes now, and she's no longer afraid of saying what she always wanted to say. "Our children are suffering, and our pain comes second to soothing theirs because we are their parents." And now she's no longer melting away (like ice) or wilting (like flowers) when facing that heat.

Summer - The Summer Solstice Faire

Also just called The Summer Faire. A modern age fun fair, with no small amount of entertainment or commercial activities available for all of the people of Camellia to enjoy. With amusement rides, food vending stalls, merchandise vending stalls, games of chance & skill, thrill acts & animal acts(thought this one is much more rare as of recent years). Hosted in Ying-ling & Kyren, on the main beaches of Luce del Sole & Petalo Bianco Shore. The official week of the faire begins the day of the Summer Solstice(thus why it is names the Summer Solstice Faire), & will end on the final day of the month of June, the faire itself has no dress code, as it is made for a celebration of the people, & paid for with the coin of the royal family. During this time, it is not uncommon for the nobility to host a few summer-based balls rather then attend the faire. Such as the Bexley Family, the wealthy Duchess Margaret has thrown the creative black tie ‘Bellflower Ball’ every year such becoming a duchess.

Spring - Spring Blossom Ball

More popularly know as the Spring Romance Ball. An aristocratic, held in the middle of the social season, on May 15th, at the Camellian Royal Palace, that makes use of both in the ballroom & gardens(if the weather allows it). Attire for this event is typically Black tie or Business formal, & usually coincide with a flower theme; the most popular flowers being the kingdom's name sake bloom(the camellia) or roses. Couples planning to marry often announce their engagements at this ball, or even stage proposals, it’s also very common for people to come to this ball with the intention of finding a partner or lover; hence it's more popular name.

Autumn - The Autumn Grand Feast

Also just called the Grand Feast. An old traditional & high aristocratic event that has been hosted for generations to celebrate the creation & founding of the Kingdom of Camellia, as such it is the 3rd most extravagant event in the kingdom, sitting just behind coronations & royal weddings. Hosted the 24th of November at the Camellian Royal Palace's banquet hall, all of the Camellian aristocrats will be in attendance, all the way from the Royal Family to the none-noble-blooded-but-still-very-wealthy families in the country. Foreign royals & nobles are allowed by invite via-the-Royal-Family only, & will only likely be sent out to close allies or distant relatives. Attire to this event is white tie only, with a white-red-&-purple color scheme(the colors of Camellia), no expectations to where even royals will typically be adored in the crown jewels even if they dislike it. The Grand Feast itself is a 12-to-17 course banquet(on years of good harvest, they’ll eagerly shoot it up to 21-courses), served in this order: hors d'oeuvre, amuse-bouche, soup, appetizer, salad, fish, first main course, palate cleanser, second main course, cheese course, dessert, & mignardise. Winter - Winter Masquerade Ball

Also called the The Masquerade, as it is typically one of the only few masquerade balls that take place in the modern age anymore(of those few, this one being one of two that take place in Camellia). While held in the same manner as other aristocratic events, this ball is actually open to the public. Hosted March 6th, the drawbridge to the Camellian Royal Palace is lowered fully for one night for the general public to flood into the ballroom. Attire is more around business formal, though the wealthier guests will treat it as Black tie, with the added requirement all attendees always be wearing something to cover their faces. Food & drinks are also provided by the royal family for their guests. This seasonal event was the favored seasonal by the late queen, Rosa li Fiorenobila.

Birthdays of the Royal Family

Tradition states that the birthday's of the royal li Fiorenobila family are treated the same as holidays in Camellia, where workers have the day off & schools are closed. Gift sending is an optional thing, but most of the citizens of Camellia do such if they see the li Fiorenobila in a favoring light. The birthday royal in question is also thrown a ball to celebrate their birth, where they are given the freedom to decorate the ballroom however they please. June 11th being the birthday of Crown Princess Ann, & February 12th being the birthday of Princess Suzanne.

Halloween Balls

Thrown by Princess Suzanne during the week of Halloween, her favorite holiday. With a Masquerade Ball(this being the other one of two masquerades that still take place in Camellia) happening 3 days before the holiday & a Costume Ball taking place on Halloween itself. The masquerade ball usually has a Creative Black tie & dark colors dress code, with the usual masquerade requirement of wearing something to cover your face; guests are encouraged to be as creative with their attires as possible. It also usually takes place at the Royal Camellian Palace during the late hours of the day, but this has been subject to change before. The Costume Ball dress code is just as it sounds, to wear costumes of any kind that befit the theme of Halloween, the scarier the better. The person who wears the best & most creative costume, as judged by Suzanne, will win a prize & a donation to a charity of the winner's choice from the princess. The location for the costume ball changes often & the location of it is only revealed to invitees. Both balls are invite-only, though those who receive an invite to the masquerade ball will have a +1 or +2, & may bring an extra guest of choice.
