Dorothy Liebes was a textile designer working from the 1930s through the 1960s, so she expressed the mid-century modern look in her fabrics for decor and for fashion. Liebes thought fashion for clothing was too fickle, but her hand-woven fabrics made for beautiful garments. Both Adrian and Bonnie Cashin made the most of her woven fabrics.

This show runs through February 4, 2024 in New York at the Cooper Hewitt. They also created a Digital Exhibition online for those of us who can't travel there to see it and the images of the fabrics are lush, and got me thinking of ways I would like to use them. A book of the exhibition is out at as well.

Sharing my love of Primitives, I hand stitched (traditional blanket stitch) these three Prim Bowl Fillers, Pin Keeps, Cupboard Tucks from tattered antique coverlets. They are backed with off white vintage wool.

Look at this lovely hand-embroidered tablecloth I found at a yard sale! It had a few stains so I dyed it. The finished result was blotchy (I should have taken photos...hindsight is 20/20) so I used some Dylon Pre-dye. This is what it looks like now, softly shaded tones of warm beige & gray. Now I'm pressing it. The best way to press hand embroidery or any irregular texture is with a bristled cloth or pad. I happened to find one of those at a yard sale too! Use like you would a press cloth. Eventually I'll post what I'm turning this tablecloth into. I am delighted to share my newest work, Under the Pink Moon. The second in an emerging new series about the folkloric names ascribed to full moons throughout the year. Under the Pink Moon represents April, when the full moon shines down on the tender emerging foliage and flowers of spring. The center panels are direct solar dye prints of garlic mustard, Virginia creeper, and dock leaves, all very prevalent in the woodlands of Pennsylvania. The vintage hexagon blocks, pieced from feedsack cottons, are bordered with vivid silks. I had a tremendous amount of fun designing and stitching this one together. I love vintage blocks-- these had been neatly, if not entirely accurately, handstitched, and as I worked I thought of the anonymous woman who had made them, and wondered what her hopes and dreams and plans had been. I realized when I finished that this is an extremely rare quilt for me; there are no cyanotype blues in it!
