More Autistic Pony and Darry Headcanons
these took me a few days but here y’all go
*scatters headcanons likes they’re birdseed and runs away*
Pony has literally no sense of danger, bro ran into a burning church for christ sake he doesn’t understand danger at all. this scares the fuck out of Darry and Soda
Pony is a chewer, he has a chewy necklace that he uses when he’s at home but at school he literally devours the ends of pens like om nom nom
Pony is much more prone to meltdowns than Darry and he can get pretty aggressive during them. his stims when he’s upset are very self-injurious but if Darry or Soda did something to cause him to meltdown he will hit them
Darry was the kind of kid to heavily mask all day at school and break down as soon as he got home
he’s very routine oriented and if his schedule and routine get messed up then he doesn’t know how to cope
his meltdowns look a lot different than Pony’s. Pony’s are much more stereotypical autistic meltdowns but Darry’s are more yelling at people and stomping around. he’ll usually go off to his room alone and let himself cry and stim but he doesn’t let other people see him like that unless he’s so upset that he can’t hold it in
Pony had the worse sensory issues out of the two of them, he hates tags and seams but he especially hates long sleeves, this is why he cuts the sleeves off of all his hand me downs
he actually likes that most of his clothes are hand me downs because that means they’re already soft and broken in
Darry is the most literal thinker in the world, he can’t understand metaphors or analogies or sarcasm like at all, Pony doesn’t struggle with this as much though and it makes Darry lowkey upset
Pony has a really hard time with routine and time management. he needs to be guided through getting ready for school everyday or else he would just show up late and still in his pajamas
Pony has absolutely zero filter. he says every single thought he has out loud. his social skills are so unbelievably non existent. he really struggles with making friends and the only real actual friend he’s ever had is Johnny
Darry has always masked his autism a lot and he was actually pretty popular in school. if he wasn’t so handsome and athletic then his awkwardness probably wouldn’t have been as well received but since he was then people found his quirks charming and endearing
Pony is very particular about food, he likes to eat the same exact things every day and he’d rather starve than try something new
Darry definitely has alexythmia, he has no clue how he’s feeling ever and emotions make no sense to him
Pony and Darry were diagnosed in the same year, pony was 2 and darry was 8. Pony’s pediatrician noticed signs in him early has referred him to a specialist to be diagnosed and after going through the diagnosis process with pony, the Curtis parents were like “wait, hold up a minute. this all sounds like it applies to Darry too.” so they had him assessed too.
after a meltdown, Pony just wants to be cuddled. he loves deep pressure so tight hugs and weighted blankets are his best friends. Soda is always his go to for a good bear hug, not just because he’s his brother but also because Soda is the master of hugs
Pony always has his headphones on, he’s usually listening to music but even when he’s not he doesn’t take them off
Soda is not the token neurotypical sibling though, he canonically had the most textbook case of ADHD that i’ve ever seen, argue with a wall

I see lots of autistic Darry hcs and I was just listening to Runs in the Family (Reprise) while kind of lip syncing along and imagining myself as Darry.
…Guys, was that a meltdown?

Ponyboy is autistic as in “Darry, there’s a word for us! For you and me. It explains some things, like why I lose track of time.”
Darry is autistic as in “back in our day nobody was ‘autistic.’ You just handled your life. I’ve been havin you over for dinner every Sunday at six o’clock for the last twenty years. You should be able to show up at six on the dot.”

Morning Routines
Tumblr media
Darry Curtis x autistic!gn!reader
Warnings: None
Premise: Slice of life of Darry with an autistic s/o
(The brain rot is fucking real. Also Darry is also autistic. I have another Darry one shot that I'm like halfway through)
Knock knock knock
"It's open! How many times have we told you don't need to knock sweetheart?" Darry asked, pulling open the door with a soft smile.
You held up the box of doughnuts the gang would surely inhale in a matter of minutes, and the drink carrier holding your usual morning drinks, "Hands were full."
For months now, you'd followed the same morning routine, week in and week out, arriving at the Curtis house each morning, in time to join them for breakfast, and help Darry usher his brothers through getting ready for work and school respectively.
Saturdays brought Darry's day off, and like clock work you would arrive with breakfast for the gang, and spend the morning with them until it was time to head off for your evening shift at the diner.
"How was work last night?" Darry asks, as you head through to the kitchen, having immediately taken both items from your hands.
You sighed, fiddling with the hem of your shirt, "Not fantastic, but there's been worse. Decent tips though."
Darry hummed, going through the cabinet to pull out plates, "Well, maybe tonight will be better."
"Hopefully," You sat at your usual seat at the kitchen table, pulling the newspaper toward you, and beginning to finger through the sections, "Nobody up yet?"
"Nah. Soda and Steve took the girls out last night, and Dal took Pony and Johnny down to the races with Two-Bit," He sat down beside you, "They didn't get back till late. Pony'll be out cold for at least another hour."
You pushed half the newspaper toward him, the sports section sitting on top, as he plopped the usual doughnuts onto your plates. You and Darry sat in comfortable silence, reading through the newspaper and drinking coffee.
Eventually, Johnny slipped into the kitchen quietly, hair and clothes from the day before mussed from sleeping on the couch. He sheepishly took a doughnut, like always, as you and Darry swapped sections of the paper.
Down the hall you could hear Soda starting to stirr, mumbling to himself as he padded to the bathroom. Johnny disappeared back into the living room and you could hear the low hum of whatever channel with early enough programming to show the westerns he liked. Soda shuffled through the kitchen, looking half awake until he spotted the doughnuts on the table, "Oh my god, I forgot it's Saturday!"
Excitedly, he filled a plate with a jelly and a sprinkled doughnut, holding up his hand to theatrically whisper to you, "This is why you're my favorite."
Darry rolled his eyes, swatting at his brother with his half of the paper, "Watch it little buddy."
Soda only laughed, heading for the living room, "Whatcha watchin Johnnycakes?"
You chuckled, refolding the paper neatly and reaching for the pen that always sat on the counter, "If doughnuts are all it takes to bribe that boy, I should be getting a free pop every time I stop by the DX."
Half an hour later, you were nearly finished with the crossword, when the screen door banged open, and Two Bits loud laugh was filling the house, punctuated by a loud groan from down the hall in Ponyboys room.
When you flinched at the noise, Darry scolded, "Don't you go slamming my door Mathews."
"Don't you go telling me to quiet down, Curtis," Two Bit appeared in the doorway of the kitchen with a fake stern look on his face, Steve hovering over his shoulder, "How am I meant to be quiet on the beautiful morning like this?"
Steve shoved him aside to get to the box of doughnuts first, "How should we know, you never shut your trap?"
You chuckled, rolling your pen in your fingers, "You've got a point."
"Keith Matthews and Steven Randle, I might've known," Ponyboy stood in the kitchen door, half wrapped in his quilt, and looking murderous, "Didn't anyone ever teach you not to mess with a man's slumber?"
"Well yeah, but I ain't bothering no mans slumber, Ponykid."
Pony was jumping at Two Bit in an instant, and you and Darry watched them wrestle across the kitchen tile. Unbothered, he returned to the paper as you watched Steve take advantage of their distraction to steal the last jelly doughnut. With a chuckle you shifted in your seat, rocking slightly.
"Is that good coffee I smell?" Dallas appeared in the kitchen, expertly dodging the on going rough housing and reaching to take the last to go cup from the carrier you had left on the counter.
"I want you to consider that your payment for getting those two jerks out of the diner last week." You said, pointing at him with your pen.
Darry raised an eyebrow, looking up from his paper, "Dallas Winston, doing a good deed? I didn't think I'd live to see the day."
Dally tried to shrug it off, diverting, "Hey is that the last jelly doughnut?"
Steve's eyes widened, having finally been caught, "Uhh-"
Immediately, Two Bit was giving up on pinning Pony down, "You took the last jelly?"
"Relax, there's still plenty of chocolate glazed." Darry reported as Ponyboy scrambled up off the ground.
As the four dragged the argument about the last of the doughnuts back to the living room you rocked in your seat, shaking your head fondly.
Darry leaned over to your crossword, tapping at 7 down, "Six letter word for family: insane."
With another chuckle, you dutifully noted it down, "Undoubtedly."
Even with the argument lowered to a dull roar, Johnny had pumped up the tv volume to compete, much to your dismay. You shifted in your seat again, trying to focus back on the last few crossword clues.
"Let's go sit out on the back porch, get away from them for a while," Sensing your discomfort, Darry began to gather his coffee and the sports section to review one more time, standing up and offering you his hand, "I'll even let you talk my ear off about that show you've been watching."
You grinned, taking your crossword in one hand, and his own hand in the other, "Sounds like a dream."

thinking about darry being autistic and how that factors into his reactions to things
like he *needs* that sense of normalcy after his parents die so the most logical option for him is to take over his parents responsibilities because he can’t have his brother’s normal routines disrupted or his own (he doesn’t have a parent, he’ll become one because things cant be different) . Him not *meaning* to snap at his brothers or for anything he says to come across as mean, but it’s not like he can control that, and he really doesn’t know how tf to make people feel comforted, even when it’s his own brothers. Him being so overstimulated by the end of the day and obvs everything he’s gone through that he snaps and yells at his brothers and he can’t help it, can’t even show it in his eyes that he doesn’t mean to. him who couldn’t bring himself to cry at the funeral, and who Cannot deal with his brothers’ (esp ponyboy) whose already messy routine falls apart after their parents die which disrupts darrys Entire Day. him who Hates that his usual reaction when overstimulated or tired is to get angry btw.

okay okay but hear me out. adhd sodapop curtis but the reason he’s always putting food coloring in whatever he cooks is because as a kid he was an insanely picky eater and they didn’t have a lot of money, and his parents were so scared he’d starve because one day he woke up refusing to eat spaghetti and that was one of like two safe foods they could afford for him, and so his mom came up with the idea of dying the sauce his favorite color and it somehow worked. and now darry lets him do it because if his parents couldn’t afford to pick that battle, darry definitely can’t

Pony and Darry are both autistic but their autism manifests very differently from each other’s which is part of the reason they’re always butting heads.
Darry is very reliant on his schedule to function throughout the day so when pony does something like miss his curfew it throws Darry’s whole day off in his head and he has a hard time being flexible
Pony on the other hand is literally incapable of sticking to any semblance of a schedule bc my man is audhd and time does not exist to him. This stresses Darry out to no end
i could go on and on about this so lmk if y’all want to hear more

Mr Curtis was autistic and LOVED his routine, he had one and Ms Curtis honestly didn't mind cause she just liked the flow it gave the day (and the structure helps her dyslexia [yes Ms Curtis is dyslexic, why? CAUSE I SAY SO])
This resulted in all the Curtis brothers having a routine. It did change a little after their parents died tho.
°☆°☆°☆°☆°☆°
Darry needs them, he liked structure and having a routine makes that sooo much easier. However it won't kill him to break his routines.
Soda doesn't have very strict or specific routines, but like his mother he liked the flows it gives the days (also the structure dies help with his dyslexia) He does certain things on days and likes having his designated chores. But honestly doesn't care if his routines get interrupted.
Ponyboy got his father's autism and NEEDS his routine, its the same every.single.day. (mabye with small changes but the changes are common, like cooking breakfast or cleaning up after) if he has to break his routines its makes him want to rip his skin off and scream till his lungs collapse (being in the church was hell for our poor boy😔)

Darry having autism is actually my biggest comfort headcanon
(Basing this off of MY autism with overlapping adhd and ocd)(I hc him with some of all three)(projection character !)
He yearns for familiarity and follows an empty pattern in his life. He took the roll as a parent over a brother because of this. He doesn’t want Pony and Soda to go without one and thinks that if he can’t act as them, it’ll be like things are the same. He needs a routine or he will break. He can’t handle change
He doesn’t know how to show affection and it often gets misunderstood. He wants to best for his brothers and wants Pony to have the life he never had the chance to have, so he pushes him for it. He thinks he’s giving Pony a chance in life, while Pony sees it as Darry telling him that he’ll never be enough.
His outlet is anger because he struggles to show emotion. He doesn’t know how to process or show emotion that he default to anger. When he gets worried, he gets mad. When he gets scared, he gets mad. He doesn’t show much emotion, either. He stays neutral and only ever shows it when it’s huge. He’s not the best at understanding it- at all. He doesn’t get why people are upset or mad.
He craves to love, but he just can’t show it. He knows something’s wrong with him- his parents never had that problem, Soda never had that problem, Pony never had that problem. So why does he?
He always does some repetitive motion, mainly with his hands, when he’s overwhelmed or nervous- which, for him, is more often than not at this point. He has a 100yard stare when processing anything sudden and overwhelming.
He takes things to literally. He struggles to relate to others. He’s not good at communicating. He can’t maintain good relationships. He’s often told to be emotionless because he just can’t fucking get it.
He hates the way cigarettes smell, but he can’t tell the others. He hates certain foods the gang loves because of texture, but he can’t tell them. He hates how washing dishes feel, but he can’t tell the gang. They’ll all think he’s being dramatic when he’s always just overstimulated/overwhelmed.
I have so much more for this, but currently I am overwhelmed!
Be aware for more

Darry Curtis x trans male reader
Patrick swayze my beloved 💆
~~
You sit on the edge of your and Darry’s shared bed and hunch over, pulling your shirt out. As you walk to the bathroom to grab bandages, Darry catches you. “Hey, darlin’.” He grabs your arm and looks you up and down to make sure everything is alright. “You in that…mood again?” You silently nod. He takes you back to his room and invites you to lay down in bed with him. You take the invitation, obviously. You lay face down with your head in the crook of his neck. “I don’t really get it but I can at least try to help.” You smile and nuzzle your face into his neck. “You’re handsome, you know that? Real tuff. And tough.” He smiles at himself. “Thanks Darry…” “you know you can’t bandage your chest all the time…can’t be good for your lungs.” You just grumble in response. You knew it was true. “You gonna use your words?” He raises an eyebrow and rubs the back of your head. Why is he so hot? “Sorry…it just…it hurts when I don’t wear them.” “I know.” He kisses the top of your head. “I just don’t want you to get hurt.” He caresses the back of your neck in an attempt to comfort. “Because I love you.” He continues. “And you’re very handsome. And funny.” You giggle nuzzle him again. He always knows how to cheer you up.
~~
Eek I love this!!!! Daryl Curtis my beloved!!!! Constructive criticism is encouraged!!! Also sorry it’s short but it’s sweet, yk?
