I think one of my favorite parts of the "autistic Shadow" headcanon is the fact that he's designed to be the Ultimate Lifeform. I don't mean this in an annoying, "autism is a superpower" dumb way (even if I do find my own autism to actually be quite helpful at times, the whole concept of calling it that is stupid and used to hurt people like us), I mean it in a "Shadow was genetically engineered to be an Ultimate Lifeform, he's designed to survive and be able to do things no one else can, yet he still struggles with something that could be classified as a disability in his daily life." I dont know if im wording it properly, but there's something about how he's still viewed as that Ultimate Lifeform despite dealing with something that many people would immediately label as a trait that makes someone "inherently" less capable of survival. I know that many folks struggle with autism in way more severe ways than I may (though much of me saying this is kinda me repressing and refusing to acknowledge that it IS still a disability for me, but still, i recognize others DO deal with more severe aspects than I do), however I really just dislike how autistic characters get labeled as inherently "unable" to live "right". He's a character whose whole thing is that he makes his own path for himself, he fights even if the world hates him, he doesn't back down and even when it looks like he is, he's just playing it smart. Even if he does have these struggles, he IS able to find a life for himself, he isn't held down by expectations or what people tell him he is. In fact, that's ANOTHER whole part of him as a character, that he breaks free from what others say he should be. Even if he were confirmed to be autistic, he wouldn't be "the autistic character". He'd still be himself, he'd be Shadow, they'd be confirming that he has certain struggles, but he'd still be /himself/.

His story wouldn't change, he wouldn't be bound by the chains of what people think an autistic character in media should look like, he wouldn't be "the character who's autistic" (as if they aren't all already autistic, but that's a whole different topic lol), he'd just be Shadow, and Shadow would just happen to be autistic.

Again, I may be wording this wrong and if i am PLEASE forgive me, I'm trying so hard to put my thoughts into words,,,

I think this is coming a bit from a place of me seeing Prime Sonic and thinking to myself "holy fucking shit he's got ADHD but it's not shown as all of him". Of course they havent truly confirmed Sonic to be ADHD but like, i think they probably did do it purposefully here, but maybe that's just me? I just see him do stuff and think "wow yeah, I've done that before! And I do it because i have ADHD! and he has some of my struggles!! But his friends still love him even if they're annoyed by him at times, and he still isn't a bad person even if he did fuck up! Any they handle it with nuance that real people experience in life!!"

And that's how I'd see autistic Shadow being handled. He already has a lotta the traits, but they don't confirm it being based on things like sensory overload or whatever, despite the fact that they really could. And even if they did, he'd be handled just as if it were another trait. It wouldn't be some defining attribute to him, him being autistic wouldn't be some selling point, there wouldn't be any "look! There's now an autistic character in this media!!".

But back to the main point.... Basically, him being autistic doesn't make him any less of the Ultimate Lifeform, and I think that's about the most extreme way to get across the point of "being autistic doesn't make you any less of a person or any less important". He was GENETICALLY ENGINEERED. Yet he still is autistic and it was decided "yep we succeeded in creating the Ultimate Lifeform!", so much so that the military wanted to use him as a WEAPON. Nothing about his potential disability made him any less of a success, or any less of a protector to Maria, or any less of a wonderful creation to Gerald, or any less of anything else to anyone he knows.

Something about that is just... a really nice idea to me. Maybe not for everyone, but to me that's inspiring as fuck, and reassuring to, to think about...

Mario Simulator (Joke Fic)

Chapter 3

Warnings (Just in case): Arson, Suicide (no one actually dies, SMG3 is just dramatic and contemplates it for a second)

Ships: Marware, Battery Acid (Orange Juice x Mr Puzzles), Swagmaster69696969 x Sonic (like for a second)

It was a new day at Mushroom Akademi and Mario was lovesick, staring at the countless of definitely consented and not at all stalker-like photos of his one true love on his spaghetti-themed flip-phone with a Teletubby keyring hanging on it.

One day they would be together and have a pretty wedding and he'd be his everything and be together forever, but right now he'd has to put in the effort for that to happen. Sadly. Why couldn't life just make things easy for him? Why did he have to be born with this condition?

Anyway, Mario noticed Meggy waving at him to come over so he Naruto ran over, gusts of wind flowing away from Mario as he stopped, nearly causing everyone to fall over except Meggy cause she's built different.

"Hi Red! How's it going?" She playfully punched him which if it was done on any other person, would have sent them flying into the nearest wall. This was Mario though so it didn't. "We were just talking about- what were we talking about again?" She looked at SMG4 who quickly went into autism mode.

"We were just taking about how Sonic the Hedgehog is actually a good franchise and that it isn't as 'cringe' as some would say because it's a beautiful piece of media filled with cool mechanics, fleshed out characters, great stor-"

Mario quickly shut of his ears as SMG4 yappered on about some dumb blue hedgehog.

In the background, Sonic is seen judging SMG4 while holding his swagalious boyfriend's hand, who is aiming a gun towards SMG4's head.

"Oh uh Mario," SMG3 said while SMG4 still was autisming "I need to talk to you for a second, uh, privately."

"Okie-dokie! Good luck Meggy!" Mario exclaimed leaving Meggy alone with a cringe failure of a man and a declining sanity from being with him.

After they were out of view, SMG3 dragged Mario behind a perfectly cut and well placed bush.

"Okay, I think we're safe. Do you remember the plan from yesterday?" SMG3 whispered, careful not to raise his voice any higher in fear of being caught.

"Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh nope!" Mario said, smiling innocently.

"Of course you don't" SMG3 hit his face, annoyed at himself for expecting Mario to remember anything. "We are going to spread a rumour about Orange Juice liking content farm videos."

"Why can't we just kill him?" Mario said while pulling out a double-barrel shotgun from his infinite storage pocket.

SMG3 sighed heavily "You said it yourself, Mr Puzzles will get depressed if we do that without ruining his relationship with Orange Juice first. If Mr Puzzles is depressed, we won't want to be with you."

"Wow, Mario is-a so smart!" Mario exclaimed

"Now, are you-" SMG3 tried to say before being cut off by a familiar single mother.

"What are you two doing?" Karen asked, looking down on the two suspicious individuals.

Mario had to think of a distraction, quick and fast! "UHHHHHHH Mario's PINGAS is-a stuck in the door again!" Mario shouted, a door magically appearing closed on his PINGAS

"Damn it Mario, not again." Karen stated, dragging Mario on the floor to the Nurse's office once again. Mario looked over to SMG3 and gave him the thumbs up, signaling to him that SMG3 had to start this on his own.

"The things I do for that Italian.." SMG3 whispered to himself as he strolled back to his small friendship group, in which Meggy was in a hospital bed, dying of boredom while SMG4 was still ranting about that blue rat.

"-and that's why The Murder of Sonic The Hedgehog is the best Sonic game ever and no one can tell you otherwise!" SMG4 stated, cheerfully while Meggy noticed that SMG3 was coming back and was immensely relieved.

"Oh hi SMG3! You're back! Please help me he won't stop talking about Sonic the Hedgehog" Meggy begged, clingying onto SMG3 with desperation.

"Aren't there content farms of Sonic?" SMG3 asked, ignoring Meggy's pleas for freedom

"There's content farms of everything." SMG4 gritted his teeth, at the mention of those horrible, cheap, lazy, brainrotting pieces of trash. "Why do you ask?"

"I just overheard that Orange Juice likes content farms, like unironically. Kind of cringe /neg if you ask me." SMG3 mentioned, planting the seed in his two friends head of the rumor.

"Really? Remind me never to talk to that guy ever again." SMG4 stated

"You'd believe that? What if it's just a rumor?" Meggy said, the only one in the group with a functioning brain cell.

"I heard him talking about it to Water Bottle and Apple Smoothie so I doubt it." SMG3 lied.

"Huh. I bet if Mr Puzzles finds that out, he's going to be pissed" Meggy stated.

"Probably." SMG3 hid a small smirk. This was way to easy, he probably should have asked for another condition other than not having his secrets be exposed. It was too late now for that.

The extremely loud and ear-bleeding bell rang, signaling for first period.

"Ugh, I have catering next..." Meggy sighed.

3 months ago she was banned from entering the class kitchen because she and Mario had burned the entire building down because they had tried to heat up some water. The school had to be closed for 1 week because it had to be rebuilt.

So she had to spend all of her catering lessons for the rest of her time being in this school in a dark empty classroom, writing down "I will not try and burn down the school" over and over again until she gets arthritis.

"Oh good luck then, I have to go to my art class now." SMG4 said, leaving the two so he isn't late.

"What do you have Three?" Meggy asked, not wanting to walk in silence.

"Physics, which is directly next to your empty classroom" SMG3 answered.

They both talked about random things until they reached both their classes and said goodbye.

The rest of the day before Lunch went pretty smoothly. The rumour spread like wildfire because of SMG3's conversation with SMG4 and Meggy and soon enough the whole school was talking about it, even teachers.

Mario even got to spread it even more when he got out the Nurse's office, talking to anyone and everyone about it, no matter if they wanted to know or not.

"Mario's a-proud of you S-M-G-3, you really out did yourself today." Mario patter SMG3's back like a father would to his child.

"Well, the sooner it gets done, the sooner I can leave." SMG3 stated, ignoring the fact this was the most fun he'd had with Mario ever.

Then the two of them were interrupted by a scream, a very electronic and theatrical scream coming from the rooftop of the school.

SMG3 and Mario ran in the direction of the scream before SMG3 pulled out a plot convenience portal which teleported them to the scene of the crime.

Mr Puzzles, looking obviously angered and betrayed was yelling at Orange Juice, who was backed at the edge of the railing, one nudge away from failing to his death.

"I swear I don't like content farms! They're gross and unoriginal! I would never-" Orange Juice tried to plead, before being interrupted by a furious Mr Puzzles

"I know your lying! I've heard the stories! I thought you loved me!" Mr Puzzles exclaimed, gasoline pouring out his screen, resembling human tears.

"I do love you my dear pookie bear you just have to believe me when I say that content farms are created by hell itself and I don't like them." Orange Juice stated, wiping Mr Puzzles' tears lovingly

Mr Puzzles breath hitched at the contact of his love, wanting to lean into it but just controlled himself, needing to know if Orange-Kun was telling the truth.

"If you mean that, you'll burn that place from the SMG4 Vs Content Farms video for me" Mr Puzzles stated, needing to know if Orange Juice was telling the truth or not.

Immediately, without stopping a beat, Orange Juice pulled out a comically large gasoline container with a tiny lighter and opened up a portal to that disgusting hell-like place. He then poured the entire gasoline can into the portal and lit it on fire, closing the portal before it could even spread into the school.

"So you are telling the truth?" Mr Puzzles whispered (and whimper- -gets shot-)

"Of course I am, now let's get you fixed up you beautiful doll." Orange Juice said, taking Mr Puzzles' hand and walking off into the distance, cherry blossom petals falling romantically as they did so.

Mario and SMG3 stared in shock at their failure of a plan that just played out in front of them.

"ARE YOU A-FUCKING KIDDING ME?" Mario finally shouted as SMG3 debated on jumping of the school rooftop before realising that would be an incredibly dumb idea after just one failure as afterall,

Duncan headcanons bc i ran out of post ideas

- Duncan was a clumsy kid. He always tripped over anything, his own toys, the sidewalk, his shoelaces, the stairs in his own house. Mostly the stairs. In almost every picture of him as a kid, he had at least one bandaid

- he LOVES spicy food. everytime he gets spicy food, he fucking DEVOURS THAT SHIT. he even drinks the bottle of hot sauce like its beer or something

- he was a SUPER hyper kid, so hyper to the point that when he was 4 his dad had to buy a leash because he kept running around and getting lost. But he hated the leash, he would do everything to get it off and when he couldn't, he would just cry until his dad took it off

- his favorite animal as a kid were sharks and it's still sharks. he drew sharks, had shark plushies, wore clothes with sharks on them and even asked his mom for a pet shark when he was 5 (he got very upset when she said it wasn't possible for them to get a pet shark)

- Duncan has naturally fluffy hair, but he uses so much hair spray for his mohawk to the point it feels like a brick

- He was obsessed with ninja turtles growing up

- His birthday is in January but he hates winter, he definitely sleeps with like 5 blankets during winter

- in middle school he was forced to read The Outsiders like every other 7th/8th grade and it was like the only book he was obsessed with and Dally probably inspired his personality

- he paints his nails but he kinda sucks at it so it's always super messy

- He has autism, ADHD and dyslexia, but he probably didn't even know until he was in his early/mid twenties

Common ADHD traits/experiences I've heard of !!

(I was gonna make a post about why I might be neurodivergent but I figured it'd be going a bit too personal. Also this is just easier)

(ADHD is much more nuanced and complex than I may make it appear in this post. A lot of ADHD people don't have a lot of these traits or have traits not mentioned here. For example there are three types of ADHD (inattentive, hyperactive and combined) and most inattentive adhders are not going to be hyperactive lol)

Warning: badly worded (I'm stupid that's my excuse). also I'll go on personal rants as to how some of these may apply to me (whilst I can reasonate with each point listed here I won't go on a rat on all of these)

Physical hyperactivity (inability to sit/stand still (I used to think this meant that people with ADHD were incapable of. Sitting down (while constantly fidgeting or not) for one whole class)(I was an idiot)(I still am)). (Just overall constant , movement (I might have it idk I'm ALWAYS

Excessive talking

Stimming, fidgeting, general and overall repetitive movements (such as flapping hands, pacing, clasping hands together, etc)

Low attention span regarding things that don't garner much interest to you

More likely to be autistic, have anxiety or depression (or generally have other diagnostic conditions)

Ability to Hyperfocus on specific things, at times out of their control

More likely to have a lower Performance in school that most people

Proneness to addiction

Rejection sensitive dysphoria/RSD (really sensitive and afraid to rejection or criticism or disapproval or stuff like that. I'm questioning if I have it and I'm pretty sure I do bc i would have a whole breakdown bc i accidentally had a bad unintentional thought about this cool person I didn't want to hate me)(it's complicated)

Emotional disregulation (easily irritable, excited, stressed, stronger emotions, more likely to lash out, etc)(people with this are usually described to be much more emotional)

restless leg syndrome (except it's permanent lol)

Lower memory spans regarding most things

Forgetting to fulfill basic needs (such as eating, drinking, showering, etc)

Women/AFAB people are more likely to be diagnosed with inattentive ADHD (this of course does not rucking mean afab people can't b hyperactive my god)

Mental hyperactivity (racing/constant/overlapping/repetitive thoughts or stuff like that)

Impulsivity (doing stuff without thinking them fully though or not knowing why)

Sensory issues (sensitivity to sensory output such as noise, brightness, etc)

Easily bored/underwhelmed/understimulated - more likely to want to seek constant dopamine (due to l

Easily overwhelmed (whether itd be due to aforementioned sensory issues, emotional disregulation, rsd or stuff like that)

More likely to be perceived as "childish" (from what I've heard obviously this and many other things listed here don't apply to everyone)

Executive dysfunction (can't do shit at all)(ok it's more complicated than that just Google it up or something)

Having Hyperfixations (things you're DEEPLY invested in for a period of time, it can be a few days, weeks, months, sometimes more than a year, depends rly)(I'm still questioning if I'm neurodivergent but like I'm pretty sure I was in a DEEP hyperfixation mode when it came to sonic for like. A YEAR. like I literally it was literally the only thing on my brain the only thing in my life. and I would get realllytyy excited about learning obscure information about it or infodumping and I would flap my hands bc of how excited and passionate I was Abt it)(man I miss the times when I was so passionate about stuff I liked it was so fun :(( )

Higher/lower levels of empathy (I've seen this moreso been brought up with discussions regarding autism but I've also seen it brought up with ADHD itself too)

Lower levels of dopamine

Impatience

More likely to be a maladaptive daydreamer

Its cause is usually heavily genetic (meaning if your family or a family member has ADHD, you are more likely to have ADHD yourself)

More likely to have insomniac/have general problems with sleep (I'm questioning ADHD. I'm writing this like... Five hours before I'm supposed to wake up for school. Great.)

There is also a higher relevance between ADHD and PTSD

There's a lot of things I mightve missed

Not everyone with ADHD has all these traits (obviously)

Some of these traits may be common due to the commonness of ADHD + autism overlap (idk though)

Apparently it's one of the most diagnosed forms of neurodivergence in kids (about 7-10% of kids in the USA are diagnosed with ADHD)(APPARENTLY idk)

Tails having friends doesn't mean he's not autistic, or, How Having Zero Social Skills Will Accidentally Get You Adopted

(It's a little long but we'll get there, I promise)

Okay so I read a comment by someone basically saying that Tails can't be autistic because he has social skills and I? just? can't?

First off, yes, autistic people can have social skills. While it is a common symptom to not understand "normal" social cues, autism is a spectrum, and some autistic people have skills which others don't. Along with that, many autistics have learned to mask and imitate neurotypical behavior because of being bullied/punished when they act differently, or because they're trying so hard to fit in. So that in of itself is not proof someone isn't autistic.

Second, where are you getting that Tails has social skills?

Tails doesn't have social skills. Tails has FRIENDS. There's a difference.

You might ask, "How can someone make friends without having social skills?" Well for starters, I think there are a lot of decent people who are willing to be accepting of people who have a little trouble with social skills.

But the main reason Tails has made so many friends without social skills is that NO OTHER CHARACTER IN THIS WHOLE FRANCHISE HAS ANY. Most of the characters are neurodivergent coded, and even those who aren't still have zero social skills. You're telling me that in a world with Sonic the ADHD king, Knuckles the "a punch in the face is a warning" Echidna, and freaking Shadow, Tails is the one going to have trouble making friends? The entire Sonic the Hedgehog crew has exactly one social skill between them, and generally Amy has it. The characters just understand that people have trouble socializing. Maybe that's why they found each other. In my experience, we "odd" people tend to flock to each other. And once we've formed our weird little groups, who needs social skills?

But to show that Tails has very little social skills (and to prove you don't need them) let's analyze his first interaction with Sonic.

To start with, before meeting Sonic, Tails is just wandering around alone and bullied. Little guy, all alone, can't make a friend to save his life.

And then comes Sonic.

Depending on the version of backstory we're looking at, we have:

Tails spots Sonic, decides he's cool, and starts following him around until he finds his plane, which he then fixes and repaints without asking. Sonic shows up and is like, cool, you can come with.

Stalking will get you adopted, folks

Actual dialogue: "You looked cool, so I followed you, and when I found your plane, I figured I'd fix it up and we could be friends!"

Or Tails being bullied, Sonic runs by and stops it, and then again Tails just starts following him around until Sonic decides he can come with.

And the there's the movie version, where Tails, who's been remotely spying on Sonic for a years, shows up and HITS KNUCKLES WITH A STOLEN POLICE CAR, tells Sonic to jump in, and Sonic does because he's afraid for his life, upon which Tails proceeds to excitedly rant about how excited he is because he's literally meeting his special interest.

Also the version where Tails just falls on Sonic's head:

Does any of this scream "social skills" to you?

And in all these situations Sonic, who has zero social skills himself, just adopts him on the spot because that's just... who he is? This dude just wants to help everyone. Half his friend group have introduced themselves by trying to kill him, but he's willing to make friends anyway. And then those friends become Tails's friends, because he and Sonic give off classic "extrovert adopting an introvert" vibes (I'm not sure that Sonic is actually an "extrovert", but he's def. more open and better at making friends).

TL;DR: Having social skills doesn't make you not autistic, but even if it does, Tails doesn't have social skills, he just has a great big bro and a group of people with even less social skills than him
