This One Time, At Blues Camp: Part 3, Talented Invites
This One Time, At Blues Camp: Part 3, Talented Invites
(Not all of the men who participated in the Blues’ Prospect Camp was a draftee or a signed talent. There were several local kids and special invites that thoroughly impressed me. Not only did these guys keep up with the prospects, quite a few times, I could not tell the difference between a prospect and a talent. For their benefit and my own, I evaluated them in the same way as the prospects, and…

Ranking the Rangers' best undrafted collegiate signings
Ranking the Rangers’ best undrafted collegiate signings
[ad_1]
The Rangers bulked up their rather thin complement of forwards in Hartford for 2020-21 — or at least they think they did — by signing three undrafted collegians who might even have a higher ceiling than the AHL.
Patrick Khodorenko, a 21-year-old center who led Michigan State in scoring with a 16-33-49 senior season, is in. So is Austin Rueschhoff, the 22-year-old, 6-foot-7, 228-pound…

WOLF PACK GET PETAN PP BLAST TO BEAT PENGUINS
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By: Alex Thomas, Hartford Wolf Pack HARTFORD, CT – On Friday night, Nic Petan broke a 2-2 tie with a five-on-three powerplay blast in the third period. The goal stood as the game-winner as the Wolf Pack defeated the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 3-2 on Fan Appreciation Night at the XL Center in front of over 6,900 fans. Two quick slashing calls on the Penguins gave Hartford 65 seconds of five-on-three time at the 12:59 mark of the third period. Petan ripped a one-timer by Joel Blomqvist for his 15th goal of the season to give the Wolf Pack the lead for good. Nikolas Brouillard picked up the second of two points (1 g, 1 a) on the night with an assist on the goal, while Brett Berard's secondary helper was his second of the night. The Wolf Pack controlled the pace of play in the first period, outshooting the Penguins by a 12-3 margin. Each side also hit a goal post, as Case McCarthy struck the iron for the Wolf Pack before Matt Filipe countered for the visitors. A late push from the Wolf Pack in the second period led to the icebreaker, as Bryan Yoon roofed his first goal at the XL Center at 17:26 to make it 1-0. Bobby Trivigno wired a shot high off Blomqvist, who surrendered a rebound to his left. Yoon collected the loose puck and snapped it with the netminder's glove for the second goal of his AHL career. The Pack extended their lead 43 seconds into the third period as Petan found a pinching Brouillard. Brouillard sniped his fifth tally of the season over the glove of Blomqvist to make it 2-0 Wolf Pack. Alex Belzile picked up his 31st assist and team-leading 50th point of the season on the goal. The Penguins pushed back, however, tying the game with two goals in just 39 seconds. Jack Rathbone made an excellent play in the slot, waiting out a Wolf Pack defender before breaking Louis Domingue's shutout bid at 7:58 to give the visitors some life. Austin Rueschhoff then evened the game as he muscled his way to the blue paint before stuffing home a rebound to make it a 2-2 hockey game. The club's timely five-on-three goal at 13:22 of the third period would be the difference, as the Pack's answer was too much for the Penguins. The victory was the Wolf Pack's second in a row against the Penguins, as the sides split the season series with three wins each. The home team went 6-0-0-0 in the head-to-head matchup. Thanks to the victory, the Wolf Pack now have an eleven-game (9-0-1-1) point streak at home against the Penguins. Hartford concludes the 2023-24 regular season with road games against regional rivals. Tomorrow night, the Pack heads north to the MassMutual Center to take on the Springfield Thunderbirds. The puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m., and coverage will be available on both AHLTV and Mixlr. HARTFORD WOLF PACK REPORTER'S NOTEBOOK
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - The Hartford Wolf Pack announced their 2023-24 home opener will be Friday, October 20, against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for the second time in team history. The season for the Pack will open on the road on Friday the 13th against the Providence Bruins, and the following night, the team will be in Springfield to challenge the Thunderbirds at the Mass Mutual Center. The full schedule will be released Wednesday. THOMPSON LEAVES BRIDGEPORT The Bridgeport Islanders head coach, and ex-Pack defenseman, Brent Thompson, has departed The Park City to join the Anaheim Ducks, where he will join another Bridgeport coaching alum, Greg Cronin, as his new assistant. Cronin was named the new Ducks head coach last month. Rick Kowalsky was named Thompson's new assistant in Bridgeport last year, and like Ken Gernander a few years ago in Hartford when he saw Keith McCambridge named his new assistant, he was gone a year later. PADDOCK Former Wolf Pack John Paddock, 69, has retired from the Regina Pats (WHL) as Coach/GM/VP of Hockey Operations. The AHL HOF coach won two WHL Coach of the Year honors, won a conference title, and reached a Memorial Cup final in his tenure. In his nine years at Regina, he had 12 players drafted into the NHL. Connor Bedard was the third time a Regina player was taken first overall. Paddock finishes with 209 wins, the second most in team history. MISHEGOSS Easton Armstrong, the youngest son of Wolf Pack great Derek Armstrong, who played a year-and-a-half with Paddock before being dealt to Winnipeg, will be on his third WHL team as an overage player next year. He will play with the WHL expansion Wenatchee (WA) Wild. Ex-Pack Austin Rueschhoff will be seen up to six times next year after signing a one-year AHL deal with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Ex-Pack François Brassard departs the Maine Mariners and signs with the Ft. Wayne Komets (ECHL). Former Bridgeport Sound Tiger Alan Quine leaves Ontario and signs with the Malmö IF Redhawks (Sweden-SHL). HARTFORD WOLF PACK HOME Read the full article

HARTFORD WOLF PACK DEADLINE DAY REBUILD UNDERWAY
Tumblr media
By: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - Riding a four-game winning streak and enduring lineup changes this week, the Hartford Wolf Pack are ready for an all-important weekend of three games in three days. The first two games are on the road. Friday, the Pack travel twenty minutes up 1-91 North to Springfield for a battle with the Thunderbirds. They then head south an hour to Bridgeport for a clash with the Islanders on Saturday. Finally, the Wolf Pack returns home on Sunday for a mid-afternoon game with the Charlotte Checkers at 3 pm at the XL Center. Meanwhile, what is usually a "Trade Deadline Day" for the Wolf Pack has transformed into "Traded Deadline Week." The New York Rangers acquired Joe Lockwood from the Vancouver Canucks in a deal for the underperforming, underachieving, and salary cap problem, Vitali Kravtsov. At the Abbotsford Canucks (AHL), Lockwood had 12 goals in 24 games there. It remains to be seen if Lockwood can be a top-six forward finisher in Hartford. The Rangers sent physically imposing and streaky scorer Austin Rueschhoff to the Milwaukee Admirals for future considerations. The team also sent an excellent hustle guy with only five points, Quinnipiac grad Alex Whelan, to the Cleveland Monsters for future considerations. The return on these deals will likely be concluded at next week's AHL Trade Deadline or near the NHL Draft in Nashville coming up in June. The Wolf Pack sent the defensively struggling and expensive piece, Andy Welinski, and his minus-16 shipped off to the Rockford Ice Hogs and received veteran Adam Clenending in return. Cooper Zech was the returning player to Hartford. He had previously played against the Pack for three years in Providence with the Baby Bruins. Clenendening will skate Friday night while Zech is here but will not dress. Forward Zach Jordan, an off-season signee playing in Jacksonville with the Icemen, has departed the organization. Jake Leschyshyn, the son of former Hartford Whaler Curtis Leschyshyn, is here to play. All these moves have two things in common, the Rangers taking money off the books and creating contract and salary cap space, which the Rangers and other teams are dealing with. The organization woodshedding certain players in the final year of their respective contracts. They likely wouldn't get qualifying offers and were healthy scratches from the lineup the last three weeks. But is this it? Are the Rangers done with their roster rebuild? Possibly, but the possibility also exists that they are not done. Given the action this week, it's likely that they may wait another week; either way, the Pack lineup was retooled with one thing in mind - making the Calder Cup playoffs. So it's paramount and without a secondary option. Read the full article
