The Darkest Of Angels

The latest instalment in the MAD MAX series, FURIOSA, is not as inventive as its predecessor, FURY ROAD. There are few moments to match the kooky joy of seeing the DOOF WARRIOR thrashing his guitar made out of a bedpan, atop a truck full of Taiko drummers in this movie. But FURIOSA delivered, and not in the ways expected. It is dark. A post-nuclear Dickensian western. A harrowing tale of an orphan taken to the Wasteland workhouse. With no inheritance to save her day, she wants revenge. There's plenty of George Miller’s signature kinetic storytelling. This isn't mere mayhem, but a thoughtful meditation on war, revenge, grief, and hope, told in 5 chapters.

1: The Pole of Inaccessibility

“Do Not Look Away, You Mustn’t Look Away.”

The tale begins in the “Green Place”, an EDEN hidden in the Wasteland. Instead of an apple, a peach is plucked by a little girl - a much younger FURIOSA. For the first hour, the titular character is played by Alyla Browne, who gives an absolutely riveting performance. Many of the traumatic moments that will shape the character are dealt with by this incredible young actor. 

Furiosa is soon kidnapped by the motorbike crazies that populate the MAD MAX films. Unfortunately for the goons, Furiosa’s mum MARY JABASSA is a veritable fury, and relentlessly hunts them down. Played by Charlee Fraser, the character isn’t in the story for long but she absolutely fizzes with intensity while she’s on screen. Leaving a white hot afterglow that lasts for the rest of the film. Unfortunately, she is soon dealt with by the villain of the tale. 

When we first meet DEMENTUS, he is clothed in white robes, like a desert messiah in his tent. Hemsworth’s performance is one of the highlights of the film. Dementus has a rural Australian accent, and a speaking style reminiscent of earlier generations. This may be lost on anyone without a small town Australian grandfather, but for me it had a chilling effect. At once folksy, familiar and terrifying. Most of the quotable lines from this film are from Dementus. He’s a bad egg, but eminently watchable. A Long John Silver of the desert.

2: Lessons from the Wasteland

"Who's got the goods? The bollocks, the testes to ride with Dementus?! "

Anya Taylor-Joy was arresting, and did wonders with a largely non verbal role. She was a strange choice for the role though. Alyla Browne believably played a child version of Charlize Theron, but Anya Taylor-Joy’s distinctive features and slight frame aren’t going to look like Theron in 10-15 years time. 

When Charlize Theron’s FURIOSA spoke with a north American accent in FURY ROAD, I accepted it as possible in Miller’s Wasteland. After all, we’d already learned years ago that way out in the middle of the outback, you might meet... TINA TURNER. So yeah, that accent made sense in 2015. However, we now know that Furiosa’s parents and childhood accent were both Australian. Then, she somehow acquires a North American accent growing up in the Citadel. Surrounded by Aussie War Boys?

George Miller deservedly gets praise for his imaginative visual world building and storytelling, but sometimes his world doesn’t make ‘sense’. I know that these films are best taken as kinetic & operatic comic books, taking place in a mythic world. However, inconsistencies sometimes break the spell, popping me out of the movie watching experience, to ask real world questions. 

However, Tom Burke’s Aussie accent was flawless, and his turn as PRAETORIAN JACK was wonderful. A stoic character, with as many wounds and losses as any other wretch in this misbegotten landscape, but who hasn’t lost the ability to be humane.

3: The Stowaway

“Didja see that? How they fought for each other, this little army of two? Where were they going, so full of hope?”

Each MAD MAX film thus far took us to a completely new part of the Wasteland. FURIOSA too shows us a new location, the Green Place. Experienced for mere moments, before being hauled to locations we’d previously seen in FURY ROAD. 

Though shown 15-20 years earlier, they looked exactly the same. Instead of seeing The Citadel only partially built, ruled by a younger Immortan Joe (perhaps not yet needing his mask, but already showing the signs of physical frailties?) characters & locations look as they did in a movie set 15-20 years later.The only character who shows the passage of time is Furiosa herself. 

George Miller takes big swings with these MAD MAX films, but in completely different ways with each one. FURIOSA is back to a revenge story, which is where the series began, but with a completely different structure this time. Ending on a dialogue in the desert, instead of blow-the-hinges off action sequence. After the excitement of what came before, a verbal showdown in the desert was anticlimactic for some. ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, climaxing with jibber jabber instead of Leone’s gunfight. For me though, this ending (and Hemsworth’s speech) was one of the high points of the film.

The film has many images that stay with me - A time-lapse shot of a young tree growing from a discarded wig. A lizard eats flies buzzing around a skull in the desert, only to be crushed under a racing motorbike tire. Parasailing marauders attack a giant truck from the sky. The sadistically twisted villain wears a child’s teddy bear. Owned by a victim? Or his own children from long ago? What a grimly beautiful world this is.

4: Homeward

“There will always be war. But to get home, Furiosa fought the world.”

Some critics said FURIOSA was “an epic slice of myth-making”, while others called it “a joyless, pointless, pretentious and inartistic slog”. Generally though, critical response was effusive. 90% on Rotten Tomatoes with an 89% audience score. Interestingly, these action films are consistently rated higher by critics than by audiences:

FURIOSA: 90%/89% FURY ROAD: 97%/86%  BEYOND THUNDERDOME: 79%/49%  ROAD WARRIOR: 94%/86%  MAD MAX: 90%/70% 

Also interesting, is that FURIOSA’s audience score is the highest of all the 5 films. Stranger still is that this favourable response didn’t result in box office success.. There are many theories as to why this is so. Although some say that this is the best prequel ever, any prequel is by definition unnecessary. Perhaps those that focus on a sidekick character will have a harder time connecting with audiences. Especially if the franchise’s main character is a no show. (Likewise, SHORT ROUND: AN INDIANA JONES SAGA might tank at the box office too, if Indy only has a cameo of mere seconds.)

This gets to why an audience decides to go see a movie. Personally, I just needed to know that George Miller - a director I’ve followed since my teens - was making another movie. That’s it. I was already in line before I knew what it was about. But most people, even MAD MAX fans, lost interest when they heard the famous character wasn’t in it. Joe & Jane Public bond with actors and characters. Directors not so much.

5. Beyond Vengeance

“D’ya have it in ya to make it epic?”

Movies used to be cheap entertainment, that audiences could afford to take a chance on, but they are expensive nowadays. Especially with all the bells & whistles of IMAX and reserved seating. People have been burned so many times by gushing press luring them to lame movies, that positive reviews and ‘buzz’ are now simply assumed to be studio psyops. Flatly ignored. Instead, if it’s a film they are unsure of, many prefer to wait a few weeks and try movies at home, affordably. On the big screen TVs & sound systems bought during the pandemic.

Given FURIOSA’s poor box office, we may never get the 6th instalment in the MAD MAX saga; WASTELAND. Which makes me regret that George Miller hadn’t made that film before this one. FURIOSA isn’t my fave of the MAD MAX films, but ranks high in my personal list. A fantastic addition to this series, that deserved more success than it got, sadly. Seeing George Miller stretch himself, in this mythic world he has constructed over decades, is a true cinematic joy.

Maudet ? Franchement c'est con mais c'est tellement loin d'être le pire. C'est sûr que ça dit quelque chose de l'état de la France, mais perso ce qui m'inquiète le plus c'est plutôt la véhémence de la haine des idées de gauche dans leur ensemble. On en est quand même à entendre tous les abrutis du monde dire que LFI c'est l'extrême-gauche (donc le diable), critiquer Israël c'est antisémite, faudrait dissoudre le NPA et même LFI !

Je rappelle que le programme actuel du NFP fait d'énormes concessions à l'aile droite du PS (déjà pas super super à gauche), et est même pas aussi "radical" que ce que le PS lui-même a pu défendre au siècle dernier. Mais toute la fenêtre d'acceptabilité a tellement glissé à droite qu'on peut entendre sans sourciller qu'il n'y a pas de honte à avoir été dans la Waffen-SS, l'homophobie c'est surtout à gauche, faudrait faire barrage aux "extrêmes", si t'es juif tu seras plus en sécurité avec le parti des nazis qu'avec la gauche, etc. Par contre dire que tu veux taxer les plus riches c'est limite staliniste.

La campagne sur Tinder, pour moi c'est juste un autre symptôme de l'anti-intellectualisme général, mais ça a rien de nouveau, et c'est malheureusement pas un problème spécifique à LFI. Évidemment que je préférerais qu'ils s'y adonnent moins, mais je comprends que quand tes concitoyens sont cons au point de gober tout ce que BFM raconte et de voter Bardella parce qu'il est sexy (🤮) sur Tiktok (comme certains ont voté Macron pour les mêmes raisons en 2017 hein), à un moment tu te dis "si ça marche, pourquoi pas moi". Je pense que c'est une erreur à long-terme et qu'elle risque de leur coûter cher comme leurs compromis pour l'alliance leur ont coûté et vont continuer de leur coûter cher, mais en vrai peu importe comment ils font campagne, à moins d'arriver à racheter 15 chaînes avec des fréquences publiques, ils vont toujours se faire cracher dessus au nom du maintien du statu quo. Quand t'es le seul parti (hors extrême-gauche) à proposer quelque chose qui s'apparente à un changement, et que ta feuille de route est sourcée et crédible en plus, évidemment que tous les petits bourgeois et autres delulu en attente d'un héritage imaginaire d'un oncle en Amérique vont te tomber dessus, quitte à se vautrer dans le bon vieux "plutôt Hitler que le Front Populaire", quitte à renier tous les idéaux de gauche, quitte à inventer les pires idioties sans aucune preuve. Et comme en plus beaucoup de Français sont réacs de base, et qu'il est toujours plus facile de se recroqueviller sur son petit moi en trouvant des boucs-émissaires que d'imaginer un autre monde, c'est avec délectation qu'ils lèchent les bottes de l'extrême-droite et de ses alliés (Macron compris).

Je préfère pas relever les petites idioties de LFI actuellement parce que 1) les autres partis font pareil quand ils ne font pas pire, 2) y a bien plus grave, et 3) dans le climat actuel, je pense pas particulièrement utile d'en rajouter sur le dernier parti de gauche qu'il reste.

Pourquoi rendre les RPGs plus sûr est capital

Et je vais témoigner de ma propre expérience, Tw : Validisme, comportements abusifs et foutage de gueule complet.

Je crois pas avoir déjà songé à VRAIMENT faire un poste complet pour expliquer ça, mais en traînant un peu sur la toile après 4 ans d'absence, force est de constater que j'en ai, des choses à dire. Ironiquement, le temps est passé depuis mes débuts et j'ai pris une bonne claque à mon retour. J'ai réalisé un truc auquel je m'étais pas trop préparée.

Je fais partie d'une génération d'RPGistes d'AVANT. (?? Sérieux ?) Dans cet entre-deux où on se foutait un peu de tout et où c'était yolo, mais où on déplorait déjà le 'bon vieux RPG'. J'en aurais des choses à dire, bonnes ou mauvaises. J'en ai, des mauvais souvenirs, des moments qui m'ont fait trembler en voyant simplement le header d'un forum sur lequel j'étais incapable de revenir et qui aujourd'hui encore, me font carrément grimacer. D'après mon titre, vous vous doutez que je veux en venir à un élément super important : Les RPGs qui ne sont pas sûrs pour chacun-e-s. j'ai donc connu cet entre-deux, où le RPG avait déjà un peu changé mais pas trop. À l'époque, on reprochait surtout au forum une tendance à se complexifier, tant au niveau du contenu que de l'apparence. En revanche, je vais vous dire cash ce que je regrette pas, ce qui m'a dégoûtée au point de me tirer quatre ans en pensant ne jamais revenir. (J'ai pas arrêté d'RP, j'ai arrêté de relationner avec le monde du RPG.) J'ai arrêté par dégoût d'une ingratitude crasse de certaines personnes qui m'ont prise pour acquise. J'ai beaucoup grapher, pour pas mal de personnes, et certain-e-s d'entre elle-eux ont su tirer sur la corde, faire pression, me repprocher de ne pas être pile à temps pour un délai, d'écrire 'plus avec truc qu'avec elle-eux', de pas avoir vu telle ou telle truc alors que j'étais pas admin, mais graphiste. Je regrette pas les blagues sur mes étourderies orthographiques très nombreuses à ce moment-là et les vannes validistes, je regrette pas les coups bas, les séances de bitching en coulisse quand on pensait que j'allais rien voir. Tout ça, je le regrette pas.

Ici, mon objectif n'est pas de poser un pugilat et de taper sur une personne en particulier, parce que je m'en fous complet aujourd'hui. Non, le but de ce poste c'est de vous dire un truc, à vous, la "nouvelle génération" d'RPGiste. C'est pas parfait, mais au moins vous le faite. Vous tentez des trucs. On n'échappera pas aux types d'individus qui ont fait ce que j'ai cité plus haut, on n'échappera pas aux abrutis validistes, aux joueur-ses un peu envahissant-e-s et culotté-e-s ou aux plagieu-ses-rs éhonté-e-s. Mais vous faite de votre mieux, chaque jour, pour rendre une activité géniale aussi sûre que possible, pile comme elle devrait l'être. Je vois des gens faire des publications pour inspirer les créateurices de forum à optimiser leurs forums pour qu'ils soient ok pour chacun-e. Y a des sources, des options intégrées par FA. (Il était temps.) On pense enfin à prévenir les gens lorsqu'un sujet risque d'être dur, on arrête enfin d'en faire des blagues sans prévenir au coin du flood, on laisse les Dys tranquilles et MIEUX, on les aide. De plus en plus de gens pigent que le RPG est un jeu et qu'il faut arrêter de stalker les joueur-ses. C'est pas partout, mais ça se développe. C'est pas toujours parfait et tout le monde n'y trouve pas toujours son compte, mais c'est là. Parce qu'on est juste là pour ça, à l'origine, inventer des univers à plusieurs mains sans devoir galérer, se justifier où subir du Gaslighting de la part d'un Staff démissionnaire lorsqu'on pointe un problème du doigt. (Sérieux, arrêtez de faire ça.)

Halloween et Mary Shelley

Il faut parfois un contexte.

L'année où Mary Shelley a écrit le roman Frankenstein était une année lugubre pour tous. Le volcan indonésien Tambora (avril 1815) a privé d'été les habitants de la planète. L'explosion avait été si violente que les poussières volcaniques sont restées en suspension pendant quelques années cachant le soleil et causant la famine partout Mary Shelley invente ce personnage fantastique dans ce contexte funeste en 1816. Le nom vient d'un château en Allemagne et un fragment de l'histoire d'un personnage qui a vécu dans ce château. Johann Conrad Dippel y aurait fait des expériences avec une huile animale qu'il décrivait comme un remède universel. Il avait aussi des théories sur le transfert d'âme d'un cadavre à un autre à l'aide d'un entonnoir.

Le fameux château médiéval de Frankenstein est maintenant en ruines. La commune profite de son nom célèbre pour organiser des activités pour l'halloween.

I have a dumb story from my Aussie childhood that feels way too Backle not to share. When I was lil, maybe three or four, my family went to this lil zoo sanctuary thing where you could handfeed the kangaroos. NOT A PETTING ZOO DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. My mum looked away for two seconds to focus on my brother, looked back, and was terrified to find me laying down and cuddling on a big buck kangaroo's stomach. Straight up having a snuggle with an animal known for disembowling people with their kicks and drowning dogs for a laugh. She very calmly asked me to SLOWLY come back over and I kept insisting that the roo was so soft and fluffy as she extricated me from the mostly-wild animal.

Hey quick question are you Backle in real life because HE WOULD TOTALLY DO THAT. Backle is the type who would pet animals who SHOULD NOT be pet, and would also kiss really ugly and possibly venomous fish <3

AND YES, he would love to meet the Gobblewonker, he was very disappointed when he discovered it was McGucket's invention but he still has hopes that he'll be a real Gobblewonker (he has no idea the real thing is still in that lake, Tate insisted it was all just crazy stories from McGucket)!!
