When the Rain Falls
Regis may be King of Insomnia, his lineage blessed by the Crystal, but he is still just a man. In the wake of having lost one thing dear to him, he is granted a vision of the future -- his son's future. His son's destiny. But what is a destiny when his son is in a dire state?

Insomnia was cast in the shadow of dark clouds, a somber mood that morning. It was fitting.
Several black cars belonging to the royal family had been driving down the streets back to the Citadel, early morning workers and shop owners pausing in their routine to watch the cars return with interest. The cars pressed onward and past the car gates. Past the looming portcullis. Past the gardens and fountains that lined the road before it got to the roundabout driveway.
One black car in particular stopped at the steps leading to the entrance of the Citadel. The door opened, and out stepped a man, his garb regal, though his features disheveled and bereft of a good night's sleep. Even more concerning was the blood that stained his clothing.
In the cloudy overcast of the morn, even the vast image of the Citadel seemed a looming adversary as the regal man looked up at it. To him, it felt like a hollow monument at that moment. It was supposed to feel safe -- like home. But what was a home now?
Turning back toward the car, the man gazed at a woman’s body that had been laid out. Her body had paled, and her blood coated her clothing, skin, and the leather seating. Seeing her again made the man’s breath stutter as he closed his eyes and leaned in. He moved past her to cradle and withdraw another occupant of the car: a boy of only eight years, slumbering away, his own breath pained with the injury that he sustained.
Holding the boy close, the man closed his eyes as he righted himself back up. He stroked the back of the boy's head, sadness hooked in his heart, but a wellspring of relief that this boy -- his boy -- still drew breath. That his boy's heart still beat.
“This is not the life I wanted for you, my dear Noctis…” the man whispered.
‘When darkness veils the world, the King of Light shall come.’
A voice, authoritative and clear, rang out in the man’s mind.
But why now of all times?
The world shifted, and it was like the clouds above sank down and darkened, rolling over the man and the boy. They twisted and coiled, changing the very scene that the man bore witness to. When the clouds finally parted, the man stood before the visage of a young man -- a young man he knew. That young man was a vision of an older Noctis.
This vision of Noctis turned toward the man. For a moment, the man thought they were looking at each other. However, the vision of Noctis was looking through him, his arm going out before a sword appeared in his grasp, materializing in a crystalline shimmer. Then, just as quickly as the weapon appeared, the visage of Noctis rushed forward, through the man, causing him to turn in order to follow the motions that played out.
Noctis rushed in and started trading blows with a being of darkness. While the man had no idea who or what that was on the surface, he knew that whatever it was, was an embodiment of the Scourge that plagued the nights and the people of the star.
A ring appeared within his vision, familiar and glowing with power. It was the same ring he wore on his finger, now resting upon the hand of his son, no longer a prince, but a king.
“Once the sacred Ring is replete with power, the True King will complete his ascension. Only then can he banish the blight upon our star. By the power of the Light alone is the Chosen king made manifest. With the Glaive of Kings, the Stone of Legend, and the Ring of Light in hand, the Chosen's power will surpass that of even the gods themselves. By that selfsame power, with the True King as its vessel, the darkness shall be purged from our star, and dawn shall return to our world once more.”
The vision ended and the voice disappeared. The man was left there holding the boy in his arms as the rain picked up, its downpour a rising chorus upon the city.
“Your Grace…” a voice timidly spoke up, interrupting the man’s thoughts. A mousey looking woman was standing next to the car, her discomfort palpable. Within the car, after all, was the dead woman’s body that he had brought back with him. Blood stained the leather seats, and the woman’s body had paled considerably.
“Shall I see to Aulea’s body?” the woman asked. It seemed she already knew the answer before she asked the question.
“No,” the king said quietly. He motioned with his head to the boy who still slept, unconscious and cradled in the man’s arm. “Take Noctis to House Viridis in the castle as quickly as you can. Aurae will know what to do.”
“Y-yes, your Grace.” The woman approached the king and gingerly took the slumbering Noctis into her arms. She gave a small, courteous bow and went to do as she had been told.
Watching them go, the king pinched the bridge of his nose. Much of this was so much to take in all at once. At least the rain hid any tears that stung his eyes. Sniffling and regaining some of his composure, the king turned back to the car and took up Aulea’s body into his arms, cradling her close. He felt her weight against him, and turned to ascend the stairs and enter the castle.
The king kept walking until he reached the Hall of Kings, where each king of the lands of Lucis was immortalized in one way or another. There was an altar at the back of the room where an old portrait of the very first king was hung. The placard underneath read ‘Somnus Lucis Caelum.’ It was here that the current king laid the body of Aulea and allowed his tears to flow more freely.
“Oh, Aulea…my friend, my love…” the king softly spoke, his voice warbling while he held back any sobs that threatened to leave him. He reached out and affectionately tucked a lock of brown hair behind her ear, her face frozen with a sense of peace on it since getting the blood cleaned off of her.
There were words the king wanted to speak.
Some he wanted to scream.
Despite that, the king merely cried, dropping to his knees at the altar while fruitlessly stroking his deceased wife’s hair. After a few moments, he leaned in and pressed his lips against her forehead for a long moment. He needed this time with her to take it all in, to process his emotions, to get ready to say goodbye.
After what felt like hours of silence, the king took up one of Aulea’s cold, limp hands and clutched it.
“You kept Noctis safe, my love. He’s still alive thanks to you. I’m sure you did what any mother would have, and I am both thankful and proud of you for it,” the king gently spoke, a warble still to his voice. He tried to smile at the dead body, but it quickly vanished. It was hard to smile with how much the pain felt like it dug into his heart and gut.
Again, the king needed a moment to process his feelings. Finding difficulty in keeping any kind of composure, the king moved Aulea’s hands so that they were resting atop one another just below her ribcage. Seeing her look so serene in a way made losing her only the tiniest fraction less painful.
Turning his back to the altar, the king slumped to the floor and sat there before taking his phone from his coat pocket. He scrolled through his contacts before settling on ‘Clarus Amicitia’ and choosing to call him. He was the only one that Regis would allow to hear him in such a state.
The phone only rang once before a concerned voice was heard on the other end: “Regis, what can I do for you?”
“Clarus, please just get me one of House Viridis’ morticians to the Hall of Kings to take Aulea…” King Regis replied hoarsely.
Silence lingered between them for a few seconds.
“Of course, whatever you need...” Clarus finally replied. “Speaking of House Viridis, I ran into one of Aurae’s nurses. Their healing magic is having some difficulty getting Noctis taken care of. They believe a trip to Tenebrae to see Queen and Oracle Sylva is the best course of action to take.”
Regis closed his eyes and brought a hand to the bridge of his nose once more. Of course issues would keep coming one after the other.
“I’ll meet with Aurae shortly. And…thank you, Clarus.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Queen Sylva might be his only hope, your Grace.” A female was speaking to someone else in the room. That much was clear at first.
“Is there really nothing you can do, Aurae?” a familiar male voice sounded muffled in Noctis’ ears as he slipped in and out of consciousness. He could barely make out the lights in the ceiling as his vision remained blurred from the events prior. His head felt like it was filled with a combination of sand and cotton. Heavy and fuzzy.
“I’m afraid not…” the same female voice responded, equally muffled in Noctis’ ears.
‘Mom... ‘ was the only thing that Noctis could think of as it felt like his body was suspended in water even though he lay upon his own bed. Everything felt so recognizable and yet so foreign all at the same time.
It was terrifying.
“Noctis!” Regis’ voice held equal amounts of excitement and worry. It was now so obvious; that familiar voice belonged to the boy’s dad.
Noctis looked around weakly. Just like his body felt like it was floating on water, so too did his vision grasp at anything like looking under the watery depths. Everything in his body felt disjointed and stiff, as if there were weights tied to every part of him and preventing him from being able to move. The fact that nothing seemed to be responding to his will made fear grip at Noctis -- enough for him to grip back at the bedsheets.
Regis laid his hand upon his son’s head, stroking his hair.
Again, all Noctis could think was ‘Mom.’
The gentle touch reminded him of her -- his mother. It was enough to calm his episode of hyperventilation. Tears stung his eyes, making his face grimace and pucker as he gripped the sheets.
“Regis…” the woman's -- Aurae's -- voice addressed the father, her voice filled with concern. “We can order a wheelchair for Noctis, but the attack that you said happened with the marilith…. I highly suggest traveling to Tenebrae in order to seek Queen Sylva’s aid as the Oracle. We cannot cleanse the touch of the Starscourge from Noctis, even with the healing magicks we have at our disposal, I’m afraid.”
A long pause made the air uncomfortably still as Regis continued to stroke his son’s head. The king was contemplating this. It was evident in his expression, but more so the way he looked at Noctis. It was as if he were on the verge of losing everything.
“If I can save my son, I’ll do whatever it may take. Can you at least assure me that Noctis will be taken care of during the trip, Aurae?” Regis asked, looking up to Aurae.
“Of course, your Grace. Whatever Noctis needs that we can tend to, we will do as best we can. I’ll ask House Vox to take in Ros for the duration that we’re there,” Aurae said.
“Then we’ll get everything prepared for the trip to Fenestala Manor in Tenebrae. I wish this didn’t inconvenience you, Aurae. Especially since…” Regis replied, his hand still on Noctis’ head as his words trailed off.
Regis had lost his wife, and Aurae lost her sister just last night.
Silence lingered between the two as Aurae gathered some of the medical supplies that she had brought into Prince Noctis’ room. A silent sigh escaped her nostrils before she looked over her shoulder and responded with: “ever is it House Viridis’ duty to act as Heart of the King. To see that health and prosperity ring ever true for the Crown. If that means assisting the Prince keep the health he has while on the trip to Tenebrae, then that is my duty.”
Aurae took up her medical bag and approached the king, placing a hand on his shoulder. Quietly, she added: “I would also be a terrible friend and sister-in-law to you if I were to watch you and your son suffer when I know I could make even the slightest difference, Regis. Ros will be fine with House Vox.”

@sparklecryptid
This is not how Clarus imagined Regis various flings would come back to bite her, but he's still sure this is Karma for all the stuff she did during the Road Trip.
Speaking of, maybe he should have paid more attention to the women Regis flirted with, instead of only focusing on the guys. (In his defence, nobody realised how much is possible when you have magic.)
(wasn't the original post that started it all about AtB verse, btw?)
***
Regis is definitely having the next one if Aulea has anything to say about it. She's not sure how they are going to do it, but for now she absolutely refuses to contemplate being pregnant again.
They will figure something out for sure.
***
Regis is maybe frantically interrogating his various female predecessors in the Ring. The Rogue is very knowledgeable on the subject and willing to share what she knows.
When she isn't teasing her descendant, that is.
Right, so! Remember that thing sometime ago about how female LCs are totally capable of getting other women pregnant via Magic, but the last one was so long ago that nobody remembers it now?
Anyway, I wondered how it would come up for fem!Regis and also who would be Noctis' other parent, before realising how Funny it would be to combine the two.
Thus, Regis finds out because she maybe accidentally knocked up her bff / friend with benefits / sometime-girlfriend Aulea.
Aulea is Not Impressed.
OH I LOVE IT
“So,” Regis starts because she does not really now how to start this conversation, “Are you on birth control?”
Aulea’s stare is scathing. Regis, by virtue of the fact she is a Princess, does not squirm under those piercing blue eyes despite everything in her wishing that Aulea would stop looking at her like that.
Aulea does not leave Regis hanging, because after rendering her judgement Aulea nods.
“I am,” Aulea says and oh her tone is too sweet for this conversation and freezes any relief Regis might have felt.
Regis is right to be wary.
Aulea’s gaze sharpens.
“However you did still put a baby in me, so I think I deserve some compensation.”
Regis’ brain stalls.
“What?”
“You got me pregnant,” Aulea is merciless with her words and stare, “You are the only one I’ve slept with and I have been freaking out ever since it was confirmed. It’s only right I get something out of it.”
“Would you like a kingdom?” Regis offers.
“Oh Astrals no,” Aulea says, “Besides, if that’s a proposal you’ll have to do better. I want a fancy ring at the very least.”
“So you don’t want a kingdom?”
Aulea sniffs.
“I want you,” she says, “The kingdom is an unwanted add on.”
(After Noctis - their son - is born Aulea stares Regis down and clutches Regis’ hand so tightly the Queen winces.
“You’re having the next one,” Aulea threatens, “I don’t care how it happens, you’re having the next one.”)

In Sola & Nox verse, how old was she when she had her whoops babies the first time? Was she already married to Libs or did they have to organise a super rushed wedding too?
@secret-engima more Whoops Baby fun times!
Sola was 21 when she and Lib had their whoops twins. By this point they’ve only been dating a year, though Sola’d been openly flirting with Lib for a year before that.
Sola and Libertus end up proposing to each other shortly after Sola discovers that she’s pregnant. Honestly, neither of them are in a hurry to get married, Galahdian culture doesn’t put emphasis on parents being married like Lucian culture does, and Sola’s never given a damn about Lucian nobility’s delicate sensibilities before, she’s sure as shit not gonna start now. Besides, it’s not like she’s the only one at court to have a kid out of wedlock - Plenus Egestas near had a stroke when his daughter wound up pregnant with no father in sight.
Besides, anyone talking shit about Sola’s children being bastards within earshot of any of the royal family will find themselves regretting that in short order, because Sola’s reaction will be the least of their worries compared to her male relatives.
But both Libertus and Sola are soldiers. They know the risks of their profession all too well. They marry (Galahdian-style at first, the Royal Wedding can come after Sola gives birth because she’s not going to rush the planning just to squeeze into a dress) mostly to give their children the extra legal protections afforded under Lucian law. And so no one in court can get it into their heads to try to deny Libertus parental rights simply because he wasn’t her husband. Is it paranoid? Perhaps, but Sola would rather be safe than sorry when it comes to Libertus and her kids, in the event she’s no longer around to protect them.
I haven’t decided when Sola winds up pregnant the first time exactly, but in the theme of surprise pregnancies at the worst possible time… she probably finds out while out on rotation on the front lines. At first she thinks it might be a stomach bug or hangover, she and the off duty glaives at the time did have a few drinks and she wasn’t the only one feeling it the next morning because Sola’s regeneration doesn’t actually fix dehydration, rip.
Only the stomach bug doesn’t go away. On the second day Sola goes to the medics because if it is a bug then they need to get her on antibiotics or antivirals asap.
Surprise, it’s not a bug!
Sola’s immediately yanked from the front and placed on desk duties, because if Sola miscarries Titus wants to be able to tell her family that it was not because of anything related to the glaives. He does not want that headache.
Titus also yanks Sola’s Retinue, because he’s not an idiot, there’s no way they’d be able to focus in the field. Libertus is yanked too, as the presumptive father and as Nyx’s only Braincell.
Titus also, politely, requests Sola tell her relatives sooner rather than later about her pregnancy. The King is aware that Sola was yanked from the front for medical reasons, and isn’t actually entitled to know anything beyond that unless Sola volunteers it, but Titus asks that Sola spare him the stress of dealing with her panicky father and uncles.
Nox, of course, is already aware, having been on the front lines with her when it was discovered, with that particular piece of gossip ripping through the gleeful glaives faster than a wildfire in Cavaugh in a drought.
Sola refuses to say anything until Cid arrives in the Citadel, claiming she only wants to explain once - a bald-faced lie, she just wants to get everyone at the same time.
Noctis lights up in excitement at the announcement he’s going to be an uncle. Ignis’ jaw drops in surprise before he recovers, and Gladio actually falls into a wall. (If Prompto has joined the Chocobros at this point, he’ll flail.)
Ardyn goes statue-still, which is probably the best reaction of shock Sola will ever get out of him, before he’s on his feet embracing Sola in a hug and spinning her around. Titus just looks relieved that he doesn’t have to keep dodging questions about Sola’s health anymore. Penny, meanwhile, is eyeing Sola like she’s already measuring her for new outfits.
Nothing can shock Clarus as much as meeting his own grandchildren and then his son in the span of fifteen minutes. Instead, he looks wryly amused, knowing he has no leg to stand on when it comes to having kids out of wedlock. Cor is oh-so-slightly wide-eyed as he processes the announcement, but Cor.exe has very much stopped working, please check back in about ten minutes.
Cid, of course, is laughing his ass off, wheezing something along the lines of ‘I hope you have kids just like you’-
Regis runs a hand down his face, exasperated and resigned and reluctantly wry. Of all the things for his daughter to surprise him with. He opens his mouth, starts to lecture her, only for Sola to raise an unimpressed brow at him, retorting that Regis has no room to lecture her when she was born only a couple months after he and Mama married.
And Six, she looks so much like her mother in that instant - Aulea never had much patience for his dramatics either - that Regis feels a swell of love and fondness. And Sola is clearly so happy about it, so Regis places his own reservations aside and congratulates her and Libertus instead.
Of course, then Sola finds out she’s having twins. And the temptation is too much for her to resist, so she and Libertus are the only ones that actually know she’s having twins.
(Nox and Axis suspect. Nox because he actually has memories of being pregnant from previous Queens, and Axis because he’s a father of triplets and has passing familiarity with the signs of a multiple pregnancy.)
(Ardyn also suspects something, but only because he can feel his niece’s gleeful anticipation. Being a fellow chaos gremlin, Ardyn refuses to spoil Sola’s fun.)
Meanwhile, the glaives in Insomnia get to experience the sheer terror of having a very pregnant Sola as their drill instructor, Abyssus and her Retinue all too willing to be her assistants in delivering her Training from Ifrit’s Pyre. >:)
Haven’t decided on names yet, alas.

Aulea - Final Fantasy XV

➤ HEADCANON : RELATIONSHIPS .
i've been meaning to write up this headcanon for some time now ! i really wanted to dig into noctis's relationships , how i view each one individually , and how he views the people closest to him in his life . for the sake of general interaction outside of ship partners or biases , there will be no mention of romantic attraction here ( perhaps with the exception of lunafreya because they have an arranged marriage in canon , but i'll keep it limited ) .
starting off , i want to say that noctis is a very dynamic character and how he interacts with people strongly depends on how they interact with him ( which i think is true for most people , haha ) . however , i think noctis is very feeling and often acts in accordance with his emotions , or lack thereof , depending on the circumstance . all this to say , some things listed may seem contradictory , but let's remember that noctis is Just A Guy , feelings are fluid , and everything is dependent on everything else . i'm going to organize this in a list - like manner to keep things more simple . i'm also not going to include EVERY single character ( even tho i strongly wish to .. i might do a part 2 with some of the more side characters down the line ) .
note : some interactions may shift depending on a rp partners portrayal / canon divergencies / general opinions . this material is crafting from my own headcanons and opinions , but i am willing to plot in different directions .
tw : parental death !!! long post incoming !
REGIS LUCIS CAELUM : noctis has always admired his father , looking up to him for as long as he can remember . he remembers yearning for his attention , but ultimately feeling as though he came second to his father's kingly duties . despite it , he always loved him . regis would read or tell noctis bed time stories ( along with aulea , until her passing when he was eight years old ) until he was thirteen years old , when noctis waved him off in an effort to "grow up" , but secretly missed the time they'd spent together before bed each night . this is also when his insomnia first started to become apparent . i think regis desperately tried to make time for noctis , and is the one who taught noctis to fish in the pond behind the citadel . taught him to drive in the car manufactured specifically for him , taught him that truly living is the most important prospect in life , to take care of business , but also to take care of himself ( some lessons of which he certainly casted aside ) . still , regis let him get away with things and do things he normally would not due to his knowledge of his son's inevitable demise . he desperately wanted noctis to be able to live his life in a way that was meaningful and full of joy . noctis's dealings with expectation , societal pressure , and depression had other plans . noctis loved him , before and after his passing , and always will . despite this , there is always a shallow bit of resentment he holds for his father : that they did not spend enough time together , that he did not learn the lessons he needed to survive as king , that he felt scared and alone so often in the citadel with a father nowhere to be found . his childhood beneath regis was not perfect , and he often felt discarded despite regis's best efforts . perhaps it comes with the territory , noctis understands after accepting his duty as king , but it does not negate his feelings on the matter . he is also angry in general , that his father was taken from him before he could learn all that it is he wished to learn ( though , truthfully , he thinks to himself that there's nothing that could have prepared him for the way of the world and bahamut's plans ) . i also believe that during noctis's teenage years , he began to reject his father for his priorities and viewed regis letting noctis get away with certain things as a lack of care , as he is not aware that regis is aware of the prophecy . he interprets it as an unwillingness to be his parent and puts a wall between the two of them , and becomes cruelly independent from him , relying more so on his friends than his father . it's part of the reason he also rejects his duty as prince/king , because he does not 'want to end up as his father . ' of course , this whole viewpoint shifts as he grows and matures more into himself , but there was a time when they hardly spoke . regis , letting noctis grow into adulthood and allowing him the space he craved , and noctis , craving his affection and attention , but distancing himself further from him despite it . they had their ups and downs for sure . (maybe i should have made the regis section its own post ummm)
AULEA LUCIS CAELUM : my headcanon for aulea is canon divergent , as in canon , she dies when noctis is an infant , and they were never able to spend much time together . in my portrayal , aulea lives until noctis is eight years old , and dies in the same daemon attack that injured his back and sent him into a comatose state . i think she was a very dedicated woman , to her role as queen , to her work , and to her family . noctis relied on her often for emotional support , and she did her damn best to be there for him when regis could not , though , noctis still spent a decent amount of time being cared for by the maids and hired caretakers he did not know very well , and did not like . despite that , they cherished each other greatly , and aulea taught him many things herself . many of the things he learned from her were things like empathy , understanding , nurturing ( even as bad as he is at it currently . i think he was really good at putting those things into practice before the daemon incident and her demise ) . she is the reason he has such a soft heart beneath his wishy washy exterior . she is the reason he loves so strongly and wholeheartedly . he also always admired the relationship between herself and regis , even if he , at times , felt excluded from them . he decided he wanted to experience a relationship like theirs , were the time to ever come .
LUNAFREYA NOX FLEURET : lunafreya starts off as a good friend to noctis during his healing stay in tenebrae . after he awakens from his coma , she meets him and they become close . sharing stories , books , secrets , and adventures through his healing journey . i think having luna there beside him was the only thing that made his rehabilitation manageable . he was often miserable and hurting , but he looked forward to her visits every day , and thought of her every night . she gave him a familiar comfort , an understanding , and an ear that listened to him after his mom's passing . that event reshaped the entire way that noctis approached life and himself , and she was the first person to get to know him after the fact , with no pre-conceived notions or expectations of who he is or how he should act . he felt at home with her , until niflheim had ripped them asunder . as he has been aware , tenebrae does not have technology in the way that lucis or , more specifically , insomnia , does . they could not communicate but through letters , but his way with words eludes him most often . this lead to their maintaining contact through their shared notebook , noctis's sticker collecting habit ( as he learned luna enjoys stickers ) , and his short sentences scribbled beneath a cute sticker he thought she might enjoy . big life events were written about vaguely ( with the knowledge that the book could be found and read by the empire ) , but for the most part , he kept things between them simple . he has always valued her presence in his life . into adulthood , i think they both continuously grew in different directions , despite always cherishing the other and maintaining what little contact they were able . when the treaty is announced and noctis hears of his arranged marriage to lunafreya , i know it throws him for a loop . he has always cared for her , but to not speak to someone for a decade and then be thrown into a world in which you must marry is daunting . he's thankful it's to her and not a stranger or someone else , but i think he really gets confused about his romantic feelings for her , and as they develop , has a hard time deciphering if they exist because he is forcing them to , or if he has genuine feelings for her . i think it all hits the moment he sees her giving her speech in altissia , and i think he can truly imagine a life with her , but the expectations and pressures of it all are so overwhelmingly unmanageable . he has had to re-evaluate the love he has for her time and time again , and while eventually he does realize the extent of his romantic feelings for her , it did not come without chaos and confusion .
GLADIOLUS AMICITIA : so , gladio and noctis have not always has the best relationship , as depicted in the animated mini series : ffxv brotherhood . gladio taught noctis to fight , and had training sessions with him several days a week , though it was not anything he'd considered more than his duty as future shield . this was a job and nothing more . gladio did not like noctis , his childlike attitude , or his willingness to give up . noctis knew gladio did not like him and often dreaded their training sessions , knowing he'd be bested no matter how hard he tried , in turn , viewing the training as a waste of his time . after the iris incident ( when noctis lied to protect her , taking the brunt of the blame for something she did ) and gladio found out , their dynamic shifted . gladio started to develop a respect for him he did not have prior and noctis felt it too . because of this , noctis started taking gladio and their training more seriously and the two were able to bond through physical battle and practice . they started sharing more conversations , but i think gladio has always had a way with giving noctis advice and "lectures" that noctis often considered a bit condescending ( albeit , at times , welcome ) . their relationship at this point goes so deep and i think they understand each other in that way that needs no words . they know each others movements , the fluctuations in their voices , and their body language . they're both similarly stubborn and manage to butt heads a lot , but carry immense respect for the other , and they both have a special place in their heart for each other . they have a closeness and a trust where they aren't afraid to lash out at each other . they know the other can and will take it , and that they'll remain at each other's sides despite it .
IGNIS SCIENTIA : ignis and noctis share a bond that goes beyond ordinary friendship , and they trust each other with their lives . ignis was deemed noctis's advisor at age six , making noctis three years old at the time . their fate and friendship was decided for them , and ignis has been dedicated to him for as long as they've known each other . noctis has known ignis for as long as he can remember , and he values him with great intensity . i think ignis's devotion to noctis goes beyond noctis's understanding , despite him being aware that it exists . at times , it troubles him , knowing how much ignis would do for him , knowing that the way ignis loves is through his actions , through his sacrifices , and noctis has never doubted his devotion to his job . i'm sure he's been through some phases where he convinces himself that the reason ignis takes his wellbeing so seriously is because it's part of his job , and not solely because he cares about noctis as a friend . though , when he's of a more rational mind , he does not doubt their friendship through such lenses . he knows and trusts ignis wholeheartedly . as a teenager , he often argued against ignis , as the advisor just wanted what was best for noctis , but noctis wanted to do things his way regardless of their benefit or consequence . as they grow older , noctis appreciates him more earnestly and through his twenties , while he can still have a gripe or two here and there , he cherishes his dear friend . it's into his thirties , though , (or after the time skip , depending on the verse) that he really really values all of ignis's hardship , care , and self - sacrifice . he begins to understand ignis's love and devotion , he accepts it , and wishes to stand beside him . to take care of himself , so that ignis does not have to , but he will never forget all of the things he has done for him . in a verse where they both live through the ending , i think noctis's display of appreciation for ignis and his general interactions with him change drastically ( mostly for the better , depending on your view ) .
PROMPTO ARGENTUM : prompto means so much to noctis because he is his friend because he wants to be . he has no obligation tying him to noctis or his princehood , he simply ... decided he wanted to be his friend . and noctis appreciated that more than anything in the world . prompto and noctis are the same age and went through schooling together and have a lot of cherished memories , and noctis values his fun - loving and dramatic attitude , but also values their more serious moments of vulnerability and care . prompto is someone he can just simply be himself around . he does not have to worry about prying eyes , different opinions , complicated expectations . prompto just feels like home to him , and he brings noctis genuine joy when they spend time together . he feels value at his side , not as royalty , not as noctis lucis caelum , but as noct . he trusts him with his vulnerable side , though he may not show it much . he can escape the pressure of the world with him , laugh , and goof off . his mere friendship is a relief for him , and he loves to spend time at his side . i think they had a lot of small moments together when they'd hang out in their secondary school days , and his presence brought so much joy and addition to noctis's life that he wanted him to join on the roadtrip , and through that , they bonded so much more . he knows prompto from primary school , but assumed he was uninterested in befriending him . after all , it wasn't as if he didn't attract unwanted attention . and prompto didn't seem the type to want a lot of that sort of attention , so he left it alone . he hadn't a clue that prompto took it upon himself to 'prove himself' and would have loved to his friend despite his looks or personality . a person who wanted to be friends with noctis for noctis , he'd appreciate no matter what . being around prompto truly brings him back to himself when all of life seems to be pulling him in separate directions .

A bit of crack for Child of Mors: A List of Things Found In Mors' Desks (Ongoing Project)
*cackles*
There's lists going around among Regis and co and some historians on what the weirdest things found in those desks are. Here's some of the highlights:
a Cosmogony with so many annotations basically nothing is readable anymore
a shard of the Crystal (Regis will craft that one into a Carbuncle figurine for Noctis)
drafts for an indoor fishing place because Regis likes fishing
drawings Regis did as a toddler
picture of Mors's Shield Machaerad, cheeks puffed up like a chipmunk from eating so many Ulwaat berries at once
biography notes for one Augura Lucis Caelum (She was an older sister to a King and restored lost art. She got banished by her nephew for not conforming to his cultural reformations.)
carefully written and annotated profiles of possible wives for Regis (the last profile added was of Aulea, on which Mors simply wrote 'he will marry her')
a letter in an unknown language
a humongous picture book about Solheimr reliefs, also annotated by Mors
3 rocks
a lock of red hair so dark it nearly looks black
a love letter to Fabricas Lucis Caelum, the female King of Lucis who restructured the whole city and upon whose plans the modern city was build
a hate letter to Fabricas Lucis Caelum, the female King of Lucis who restructured the whole city and upon whose plans the modern city was build
stickfigure sketches ridiculing prominent nobles
a sheet of paper simply reading 'WHAT THE FUCK????' written by Mors and in pink glitter pen
tax forms with dicks drawn all over them
sticky notes full of insults directed at Bahamut
a letter to Bahamut apologising for those insults

Biography (will update as and when I need to)
Noctis Lucis Caelum is the only son of Regis Caelum and his late wife Aulea. In addition to their noble status, the Caelum family has led the Lucis Caelum hunters for generations – a small, but elite clan of monster hunters – this is where much of their wealth and status comes from. They consider themselves honourable and do not hunt for sport but rather to protect those who cannot protect themselves.
When Noctis was eight years old, he was attacked by a vampire seeking revenge on his father. He survived, but the resulting injury left him with a large scar across his lower back. This still gives him trouble from time to time.
Sub-verse - Vampire spawn
Plotted with @quattuor-tenentes / @a-crookedtouch
In an attempt to prove his worth as a hunter, Noctis journeys to Baldur's Gate. His attempt to slay Vampire Lord Cazador was a complete failure that resulted in him becoming the newest of his spawn.

"Noctis?" Regis asks, hands on his hips, "How in the world did you manage to get up there?"
Noctis sneezes. The maid standing a pace behind Regis cringes as the seven year old sniffles, streaks of dust clinging to his shirt and hair. He looks, Regis thinks, like a scolded puppy.
"I don't know," He says after another sniffle, "My ball got stuck and I wanted it to fall down but then I was up here and..." Another sneeze. Despite the predicament they find themselves in, Regis smiles. Of course his son, Aulea's boy, would end up getting stuck the first time he warped. With a soft chuckle, Regis pulls the nearby desk chair over, quickly steps up, and with the added height reaches for Noctis. His boy doesn't hesitate, even as he streaks his t-shirt with yet more dust. Regis grunts quietly as Noctis's legs go around his father's waist, arms around his shoulders, ball forgotten as it bounces to the floor beside them. Noctis is getting too big to be carried, but...head settled on his fathers shoulder, he seems content. Regis steps down from the chair, smiles at the young maid to assure her that no harm has been done, and he walks from the room with a dusty Noctis still in his arms.
"I'm sorry," Noctis says after a few moments, "I...I didn't think that would happen.
""Not to worry," Regis replies, "Your first warp was bound to be an excitement.
"Noctis doesn't seem convinced. He hides his face in Regis' vest, gripping tight to his father with both hands. Regis smiles"
You know," He says as they walk down a flight of stairs, towards the gardens, "When I was your age, my first warp landed me in a tree."
Noctis draws back to stare at his father, eyes wide with surprise. "Really?" He asks, tone incredulous. "You?"
"Me," Regis nods with a smile. "That was actually how your mother and I met. I fell on her as I tried to get down."
And oh, how Aulea had raged about boys and their games. Noctis giggles. Smiling, Regis brushes a streak of dust out of his hair."So I wouldn't worry. You still have plenty of time to learn. I'll teach you."
Noctis grins at him, smile wide and eyes bright with love. He settles back against Regis' shoulder with a happy sigh.
"I love you, Dad."
"I love you too, son.".

Partial Dossier #01 :: The Lucian Royal Family
VOX INTELLIGENCE BUREAU THE LUCIAN ROYAL FAMILY
REPORT FROM PAX VOX
FFXV: Reimagined Table of Contents
Next ->
Having presided over the lands of Lucis for longer than our widely recognized calendar system, the Royal Family are ever the stalwart protectors of the Crystal of which they and their ennobled council draw their magical prowess. We are told that the Lucian Royal Family has been around for over two millennia, though there are plenty of records that have been lost or not yet been translated from their old texts due to being either too faded to read, or missing scores of information.
What is known is that in this current era, Noctis Lucis Caelum is due to become the 114th monarch in the line of Lucis. For now, his father, King Regis Lucis Caelum, reigns before him along with his wife, Queen Aulea Viridis Caelum. Though a strong and sapient ruler, the Wall having been shrunk down in King Mors’ time to protect just the city of Insomnia has left people outside its influence vulnerable.
Though King Regis has established the Kingsglaive to act as Noctis’ protectors, there is still the matter of the Crownsguard’s forces being reallocated across the city to protect not only the Crown, but her people, too. Notable families that have been ennobled by the Lucian Royal Family that have survived to this day are Houses Amicitia, Chorus, Scientia, Somnium, Viridis, and Vox. It is only recent that King Regis has ennobled that of Cor Leonis and his family, creating a new noble House for this generation. Whether or not this new noble family shall persist, however, remains to be seen.

Name: Noctis Lucis Caelum
Series: Final Fantasy XV
Continuity: Dawn Of The Future
Age: 20-30 (RP dependent)
Height: 5'9"
Birthday: August 30th
Birthplace: Insomnia
Orientation: Bisexual
Species: Human
Occupation: Prince to the kingdom of Insomnia
Father: King Regis Lucis Caelum
Mother: Queen Aulea (deceased)
Bio:
Noctis is a prince and the son of the current king of the kingdom of Lucis, the only child to king Regis. His mother died shortly after he was born due to sudden complications that arose from his birth, the kingdom grieved but King Regis pulled through the loss of his wife to make sure Noctis still felt love and happiness.
At age two he was introduced to Ignis Scientia, who was four at the time, the two quickly bonded as children and Ignis would later become his royal adviser and personal servant which was a tradition both their families had for centuries.
At age five, King Regis had found through the kings of the past that Noctis was the chosen king to save the world and vanquish all the darkness still plaguing the Lucis line for thousands of years - by sacrificing his life. Though the king was devastated that his child would die by sacrificing himself, he made sure Noctis had nothing but the best for his life and lived a life that would make sure that he lived the life of any normal loved child - or at least he tried as much as he could given he was the king.
Noctis’ childhood was spoiled a little but he mostly was rather lonely. Other than Ignis, he didn’t really have a lot of people to play with or talk to that was his age. He went to a normal public school instead of the private schools all the other noble children of Insomnia learned in so he was often strayed a bit for many children felt too nervous talking to a prince.
Yet at the age of eight, Noctis and the other servants were brutally attacked by a daemon unleashed upon them by an enemy country called Niflheim that was at war with Insomnia. The attack was so bad that Noctis had gone into a coma for months.
In his dream, he was protected by a messenger of the Gods named Carbuncle that protected him from unknown dark forces trying to prevent him from waking up. Though Noctis mostly forgot Carbuncle’s role to him, he remembers the little fox creature fondly and is the one happy moment he remembers follow the attack.
When he woke up, he recovered in the area of Tenebrae where he met Lunafreya Vox Fleuret. The two bonded immediately and although the trip was short, he and Luna decided to send secret messages to each other for years using their dogs.
It’s after leaving that Noctis was explained about the crystal of Lucis and that he was it’s chosen king, though he was never told that he would have to die protecting the world, he had learned that his father was dying from the powers of the crystal taking it’s toll. He didn’t realize it meant the same for himself too, but Noctis’ heart ached knowing his father was slowly dying a very painful life-draining death.
Immediately after, Niflheim came in for another attack on the area of Tenebrae for a full invasion where Luna was left behind. His father tried to take her with him for protection, but she chose to stay behind in favor of protecting her brother - Ravus.
When he had just started high school, still going to a regular public school, Noctis had met Prompto Argentium. He had met Prompto four years prior very briefly but every time he tried to talk to him after that, he kept avoiding him. Prompto looked completely different since when he last saw him, it looked like he had gone through rather life-altering changes. Even if he was a little concerned if Prompto did all that for him, he accepted the blonde boy into his life and the two became very close friends.
In-between meeting Prompto, he would bond with Gladiolus as well. Gladiolus is his bodyguard, who was only three years older than him but was much stronger and tougher looking than him. At first, Gladious and Noctis couldn’t stand each other as Gladiolus thought Noctis was far too spoiled and reckless while Noctis thought he was too angry. The gap between them closed when Noctis rescued Gladiolus’ sister, Iris, when they were kids. The experienced open Gladiolus’ eyes that Noctis had a good heart and the two were practically like brothers ever since.
At age fifteen, he moved out of the castle and into his own place with Ignis so he could have some independence. Even with the deep personal trouble of the expectations of him as the future king and his father was dying, he did exceptionally well in school and graduated at the top of his class. He continued to live an extremely normal life which included playing in arcades and eating at ramen shops.
Now at age twenty, he is told he may have to marry Lunafreya as a way of uniting Niflheim and Insomnia so the two nations can finally end this war that had been going on for over twenty years. He’s not sure yet how to feel about the idea of marrying someone he barely knows, but he hopes he can rise to the challenge.
Noctis is rather sweet, he’s got a kind heart and will often take the blame if someone gets into trouble with him. Yet despite his kindness, he’s rather reckless when his anger get the best of him when something deeply upsets him and has a bit of a big ego sometimes. He also never tells people when he’s in mental pain, he keeps it all hidden inside so he could be a strong and noble king like his father. Even with the pain of never even knowing his mother, his father dying, the deep pressures of a king and all other pains - he keeps it hidden and will brush it off like it isn’t a big deal.

In Nox verse, do you think Regis and the rest would be quicker to realise that Ardyn is a Lucis Caelum if it was female Ardyn verse? After all if Sola already resembles Ardyn strongly when he's a male, it might be more pronounced for female version.
@secret-engima
*grins*
Well, the resemblance between Ardyn and Sola that Sola picks up on is mostly the coloring. That same red-violet hair - which is downright rare - those same sky-blue eyes. From there, Sola notes the other familial features, features that she doesn't have or are softer or slimmer or more feminine, features that she's seen in the Hall of Kings in so many portraits.
Noctis is too young yet to really know about bastards and politics. Too enamoured with his new older brother and uncle. Still coming to terms with the attack, even if the injuries don't linger.
Regis, Cor, and Clarus are blinded by their perception of Ardyn. To them, Ardyn is Niflheim's Chancellor first, Nox's uncle second. They see the similar coloring to Sola, of course, they'd have to be literally blind to miss that. But that shade of red hair isn't unique for all that it's uncommon. Aulea had brown hair, but her grandfather had that shade of red and it's popped up in other families of Lucis' nobility.
(It's been two thousand years since Ardyn and Somnus' time. One of Somnus' children inherited Ardyn's red hair, and it's had over a hundred generations to spread throughout Lucis' population.)
It's not been said since Aulea's death, but underneath her coloring, Sola looks very much like her mother. That Sola still has Lucis Caelum features is due to Aulea (and many other Lucian nobles) having Lucis Caelum blood from a distant branch LC ancestor.
So a female Ardyn? With softer, feminine features?
Before Ardyn uses her magic, everyone, including Sola, assumes Ardyn is Aulea's relative.
#ffxv#Shadow of Heaven's Light#Nox verse#in the case of fem!Ardyn everyone assumes that Ardyn's half-sibling (assumed sister) looks like Ardyn and therefore also like Aulea#and Regis just has a very specific type#of course in the taur verses Ardyn's cover as an LC is blown as soon as they discover she's a dragon taur#and it's actually the fact that Ardyn is an aunt instead of an uncle that takes a bit longer to discover#honestly even after fem!Ardyn is outed as an LC the assumption is still that she's related to Aulea#that Ardyn's father was Mors but her mother was one of Aulea's Vietum relatives - or a Celavere or a Latentis if we go farther up the tree

Propaganda for the Lucis Caelum Family
Spoilers for Final Fantasy XV
CW: murder, electrocution, suicide
"Phew boy. There’s a lot to unpack here. Let’s start with our alive kings (at least during chapter one of the game.) Regis and Noctis are father and son and Regis is the current king of the Kingdom of Lucis. Aulea Lucis Caelum is the late mother of Noctis and the wife of Regis. The dysfunctionalness starts here since well we’ve got mommy issues right off the bat. Regis also has daddy issues thanks to Mors and decides to try and give his son a relatively normal life. Leading to Noctis moving out at 15 and effectively falling out of touch with his dad because Regis is dying trying to uphold the wall and finds he has less time for his son than he thought. An unavailable father yippee. Couple that with ye good old childhood trauma and that’s one messed up 20 year old Regis sends off into the world. He then promptly dies a chapter into the game having lied to his son. The next Lucis Caelum we meet is Ardyn Lucis Caelum who in the space of what is presumably a couple of months, helps Noctis escape the wrath of another god, steals his car, stabs Noct’s fiancée Lunafreya, forces Noct’s right hand man to give up his eyesight in order to have the strength to fight him off, tricks Noct again into pushing his best friend of a moving train, manipulates said friend into killing his father/creator and then proceeds to capture and torture him, separates Noctis from his retinue and forces him to traverse the literal corridors of hell alone, while having to rely on the life draining magic ring you get free with king hood instead of weapons since oh yeah. Ardyn took them. He then tries to kill Noct via electrocution only to have his retinue save him in time on PURPOSE. Cause more trauma? They find our good old best friend Prompto who’s a clone. And then the whole gang is forced into fighting a corrupted version of Noct’s nearly-Brother-in-Law who’s begging him to kill him. Forces Noctis to confront him alone only for him to be absorbed into a magical crystal sleep for ten years. What for? Revenge of course. On his brother. Somnus! It doesn’t stop there! Long story short Ardyn was magic and healing while Somnus was a prick and a murderer so naturally he baited Ardyn into fighting him, killed Aera (Ardyn’s fiancée. Seeing a theme yet?) and quite happily killed Ardyn too when the Starscourge he’d been healing people of by absorbing it into his own body turned him into a monster. But naturally he didn’t die and so Somnus stole the throne and imprisoned Ardyn on Angelguard which is basically just a cool ass island. Ardyn and Bahamut have a chat and it’s revealed that Bahamut (who blessed the Lucis Caelums and they literally all look like him.) planned all this. Back to the present. Noctis is hanging out in Bahamut’s crystal dimension where the big man himself tells him that to save the world he has to die. So when Noctis wakes from the crystal ten years later, he knows what he has to do. And so he goes from Angelguard and summons his old friends (boyfriends), who all turned into DILFS. So yeah they go to their ruined hometown, Ardyn is hanging out there with Noctis’ loved ones’ corpses hanging from chains above the throne (lovely decor) and then they have a fight. And Noctis wins. And kills Ardyn.
Now here’s the best bit. To save the world Noctis summons all of his ancestors who are just hanging out in the magic ring (???) and guess what. They STAB HIM! THIRTEEN TIMES!!! HIS DAD IS INCLUDED IN THIS HIS DAD KILLS HIM! Just so that Ardyn can die in the afterlife too? It’s not fun and very painful 0/10 and that’s why they’re dysfunctional they all kind of want to kill eachother? And it’s all thanks to the guy that might as well be their pseudo God ancestor? Yeah fun. Also I gave all their names but collectively it just be the Lucii. The dead ones. That is."
