before we really get into this I just want to say that I looked into author Anna Marks' previous contributions to the NYT opinion column, of which there are two: a piece about how Marks, as a queer fan, is "heartbroken" by Harry Styles 'appropriating" queer culture by wearing ugly clothes, and an audio piece about how women referring to themselves as "girls" on TikTok is actually radical feminist praxis. so. hot mess express up in here.

anyway this piece is a shitshow that basically plays at the greatest hits from Gaylor conspiracy theories, mainly harping on her inability to come out because of some intangible threat it would pose to her career:

While Ms. Swift’s songs, largely written from her own perspective, cannot always conform to the idea of a woman our culture expects, her celebrity can. That separation, between Swift the songwriter and Swift the star, allows Ms. Swift to press against the golden birdcage in which she has found herself. She can write about women’s complexity in her confessional songs, but if ever she chooses not to publicly comply with the dominant culture’s fantasy, she will remain uncategorizable, and therefore, unsellable. Her star — as bright as it is now — would surely dim.

immediately beneath this is an image of Taylor Swift crumpled face-down onstage, looking wet; if nothing else, it's peak melodrama.

the most glaring thing about this, to me, is Marks' willful omission of other queer pop stars. she opens the article with a jarring discussion of lesbian country singer Chely Wright's 2006 suicide attempt and mentions a few contemporary celebrities who have been encouraged to stay closeted -  Cara Delevingne, Colton Haynes, Elliot Page, Kristen Stewart, Raven Symoné and Sam Smith - but with the obvious exception of Smith, they're hardly Swift's peers. as I've said before in my worst and most stupid post, the argument that outing herself would "dim Taylor's star" falls apart pretty significantly when you look at the success of artists like Lil Nas X, Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, Cardi B, and Halsey. Taylor Swift had a bigger year in 2023 than any of them combined, frankly; coming out as queer wouldn't slow her down in the slightest. why the fuck are gaylors so determined to act like she's beholden to a fanbase comprised entirely of conservatives?

also everything about how coming out is sooooo hard for famous people because they're subject to scrutiny and weird behavior as if that's not? something Taylor Swift already deals with? hello hi? get a grip I implore you. why are we wasting webspace on this.

— Gavin rarely returns to Aria partly due to his Steward, Ophiuchus. Aside from not acknowledging his boundaries, Ophiuchus doesn't call Gavin by his chosen name, deliberately calling him "Vindemiator" instead. Ophiuchus finds it disrespectful that Gavin would change his name, so Gavin refuses to pay them any mind until an ounce of respect is given to him. (Which won't be for a while...)

— Guy was always told that screenwriting takes luck, and that he'd never be able to make it to film because of that. People rarely believed in him. Years later, with his script still not pitched, he's starting to think the people who doubted him were right, and he just wasted thousands on a degree that means nothing.

— Lasko's parents were insanely strict during his childhood. They controlled everything about him. The kind of friends he had were controlled, his curfew was always no later than 4:30pm, he couldn't use entertainment technology until the weekend; and even then the hours were limited. If he ever tried to argue against this, his parents would yell and threaten him until he was teary-eyed and sobbing. When his powers manifested, this behavior only amplified tenfold. He was homeschooled from 7th grade to 12th, and was rarely allowed outside at all.

— Milo was always in love with cats, and expressed love for them ever since he was a toddler. For his 13th birthday, Marie scraped up enough money to get him a tiny calico cat. Milo loved her with all his heart, for the year he had her. About a year later, Milo came back from school and couldn't find her anywhere. Marie hasn't seen her, but told him that she might come back soon. After a month, Colm was home long enough for Milo to find him and ask if he'd seen her. He admitted that he sold her to a family for money a while ago after running low on cash. Milo tried contacting the family, and Marie went to go find them, but the family said she was violent and Colm wouldn't take her back when they initially called, so they gave her to a shelter. He contacted the shelter and they admitted to euthanizing her a few weeks ago.

— Sam had an older brother he admired more than anything when he was younger. They had a 7 year age difference, but they would hang out together whenever his brother was free, since no one outside of his family wanted to interact with Sam. After his brother turned 18, he moved states overnight, all the way north. Sam tried calling and texting him multiple times but he never answered. The night before running away, he called his brother one last time, and he picked up very angry. He was yelling about how annoying Sam was, about how that family, including him, ruined his life, and to "Leave me the hell alone!". That was the last time Sam spoke to his brother, and to Sam, his older brother is just as rotten as everyone else in his family. Except for his grandma of course.

General Headcanons!

For their birthday, Asher got Darlin one of those joke Hozier shirts (like the ones that say Hozier but just have a bunch of pictures of someone else like Dan from NSP) but instead of pictures of Hozier it has pictures of Sam on it. Darlin found it hilarious and Sam has… mixed opinions on it. For the most part he just insists they don’t wear it outside the house.

Caelum goes to check in on the Applicant (a.k.a. Baby 2.0) and Ivan occasionally - he’s very happy to see their both doing well and he definitely keeps Camelopardalis updated

When Freelancer’s emotions get away from them, or they just get overwhelmed, their psychokinesis acts up a bit, with random little things around them starting to levitate just the slightest bit, similar to how the guys elemental magic acts up when they’re overwhelmed (e.g. Damien accidentally setting things on fire)

When Lovely is feeling down about the loss of their powers and they specifically want to talk to someone about it who they know “gets it,” they always go to Sam (gonna push this Let Lovely Talk To Other Characters Agenda hard)

Sunshine was incredibly kind of terrified intimidated by Aaron first time they met him

Cutie used to be incredibly insecure (they still are, it just used to be way worse) and would constantly be reading their friends minds with the main purpose being to make sure they still liked them

Asher knows all the words to the Monster High Fright Song - trust me he told me himself

Angel keeps sending pictures of dogs and cats fighting/snuggling to David captioned “us <3”

Darlin is straight up AWFUL at remembering names. I’m talking like Fantasy High Kipperlily Copperkettle a.k.a. “Littledoggy Girlcollar” awful (please tell me someone gets this reference)

answering for my mha dr here, bc holy shit there are so many. for one i go to U fucking A on reccommendation bc my brother is a top hero. i get a lot of free shit from companies for sponsorships, especially clothes companies for wing or mutant quirk users. also, my quirk is really useful in day-to-day life, seeing as i don't need a car or anything bc i can fly, and if i do need transportation i get flown/transported to places usually for free. i get invited to so much shit its crazy, ex: the i island expo, even tho we got attacked it was still really cool to get to experience everything.

honestly, putting on some sort of media or audio that reminds me of my dr (think shows, movies, video essays/analysis, or a sub/playlist), a snack or sweet treat, a bigass glass of ice water, and some mood lighting and i am all set. locked tf in, so so connected to my dr i can almost feel it. bonus points if i'm scripting for one of my more summery drs and i'm sitting on my porch (i live near a beach) so i can smell the air shit got me kicking my feet and giggling fr.

She was just a big ass cat that would keep me company and run by the cars side to make sure I and my family was safe. She protected me 💞 (thank you for making me remember her 🥹)

Getting on call with my partner, I’m rather clingy and just wanna spend time with them even if it’s just silence or sleepy rambling, it also keeps me from doom scrolling. If not on call with them I’ll put on RSlash or Gavin’s/Davids sleep aid and hope that knocks me out (and if not that a ba LMFAO-) also if I have Lavender, I put it under/rub it all over my pillow and plushies

Im genderfluid/gendervoid so I’ve tried many names, I do like my birth name, it means Loyal Protector/Pledge, so I wanted to find names that mean loyalty or music related names, but one name I’ve been using recently is Quincy, it feels nice sometimes, my partner suggested it to me.

When I was a little kid, it was the live action 102 Dalmatians, I KNEW THAT MOVIE LIKE THE BACK OF MY HAND!!! I FUCKING LOVED WATCHING CRUELLA BEING BAKED INTO A CAKE BY ALL THOSE DOGS. Also Oddball my beloved 💞💞💞 the sweet baby puppy, I just understood the pup for feeling like and odd one out as a grew up, I haven’t seen the movie in years now but it still holds such a special place in my heart. Now as an adult my two favorite shows are The Promised Neverland(only season 1, I’m reading the manga) and Madoka Magica. I love rewatching TPN, but Madoka I have to mentally prepare myself for cause good lord does it make me feel like I never took anti-depressants/pos and then a movie I love now, A Silent Voice. I think I do know that one scene for scene. As a kid who grew up being bullied for being different or just not doing things right, I felt strongly for the main characters. I’ve cried almost every single time I’ve watched the movie. The part where one of the characters jumped off the balcony kills me every time because it reminds me how that could’ve been me from the fresh ages of 9-16 and almost was. Redacted playlist tho? Either Sam, Vega, or Caelum, Sam holds a very special place in my heart, he’s incredibly comforting and ngl I miss the less sexual audios from his earlier era. I’m a huge performer! I love singing, dancing, acting, especially singing and dancing. I LIVE for the stage and positive attention, I just wanna make people smile or make people feel scene when I preform. Hopefully one day I can be famous and truly fulfill that dream of mine. I also feel emotions strongly and spent my entire childhood from middle school and up studying psychology and human behavior. rewatched 1/9/25 5/5 STARS ! the movie is so stupidly endearing. sean gives me heavy second-hand embarrassment sometimes but the motorcycle scene is so sick 🙏 the way they portrayed the island was so pretty and in my opinion the animal animations were pretty good. gabato is so stupid i love him. i liked watching the bond between sean and hank develop, aswell as hank and gabato (theyre so dumb i love them) also the beef between hank and alexander makes me giggle so bad. if i had a penny for how many times dwayne “the rock” johnson jiggled his boobs and saved an island through a storm i’d have two pennies. why does he keep doing this.

watched 1/11/25 4.5/5 STARS ! in the horror aspect, not the best. it was more bloody than scary, however it was still a very good movie. i loved gemma’s character (even if it wasnt actually her), she ate so hard. i liked joshua a lot aswell. i honestly really liked the way they made skye handle the “infection”(?), because yes it wasnt productive in the sense of solving the problem but it felt more realistic. i honestly ADORED the ending. i love when horror movies end with a death instead of solving the issues or being a “tune in next time”. also the monster? AUAAGGHH it looked kind of stupid but the CONCEPT WAS SO COOL!!!!!!!!!!
