Just scratches my brain so good. The barely restrained rage in his tone as he tries to keep his cool (later broken when he explodes about the suitors plotting to kill Telemachus and rape Penelope) is so well conveyed. The cast of Epic does such a phenomenal job of conveying micro emotions, progressive emotions, and subtext through the audio. The power of a ramp from anger, to rage, to fury is just... *chef's kiss*

Also, I know everybody says 'there are no small roles in theatre, only small actors', and Epic is SUCH a good example of that. Half the cast only has a single song or a few lines, but they leave such a POWERFUL impression in their wake. The winions/lotus eaters, the other gods (Hera, Hepheastus, Apollo, Aphrodite, Ares), the suitors, the crew, Odysseus's mother, and if I'm missing some, it's only becaude the list of people who deserve recognition is as long as the cast list itself.

Special shoutout to Mr. "We're in the darkness, up against an archer" because my boi, I can taste the fear and the anxiety in your tone and I live for it.

Good Omens season 2 referencing Powell & Pressburger films

Crowley's angel hair is modeled after Kim Hunter's hair as June in A Matter of Life and Death (1946).

Maggie's shop is called The Small Back Room in reference to 1949's The Small Back Room.

The red ballet shoes on the door of Give Me Coffee or Give Me Death are a nod to The Red Shoes (1948). (Note : the klaxons sounding in Heaven at the end of episode 1 are said to be a nod to the alarm bells in The Other World in A Matter of Life and Death. Personally, I don't think they sound at all alike; they are only similar in both being alarms. Plus, it's an audio reference, which I don't have the skill or patience to include here. But it's there!)

In The Small Back Room, Maggie has a poster for the film Stairway to Heaven displayed. A Matter of Life and Death was released under this title in the US.

The tartan hills welcoming Aziraphale to Scotland are a reference to the tartan hills welcoming Joan to Scotland in I Know Where I'm Going! (1945). And of course, the third episode is itself titled "I Know Where I'm Going."

Jim drops the book My Best Games of Chess, 1924-1937, by Alexander Alekhine, onto a table in the bookshop repeatedly as he is discovering how gravity works. This book is featured prominently in A Matter of Life and Death.

When Aziraphale enters The Resurrectionist pub in Edinburgh, I Know Where I'm Going! is playing on both televisions (I'm pretty sure I found the right scene to match this screenshot). You can also make out the name 'Pressburger' on one of the posters in this screenshot, but we'll get to that later. . .

The family name on the mausoleum where Aziraphale and Crowley hide out with Elspeth and Wee Morag is Archers. It's never clearly seen in the show, but it can be seen in this BTS photo of the model used for Crowley's embiggening. The Archers was the name of Powell and Pressburger's production company. The interior of the tomb and the urns outside the full-size set also reference the Archers, and Powell & Pressburger individually.

In Mr. Arnold's record shop, one of the posters on the wall is for a UK music tour; either the band or the tour is titled Met By Moonlight. This is referencing Ill Met By Moonlight (1957), the final film Powell & Pressburger made together. (I personally think this one is a reach, as the title of the film is a line from A Midsummer Night's Dream and thus not really clockable to the outside viewer as a direct Archers reference, but apparently the intent was there so we're counting it!)

The Pressburger posters are more clearly visible during the Gabriel and Beelzebub rendezvous scene in The Resurrectionists pub. We can see they advertise 'Pressburger Scottish Lager,' which is of course a nod to Emeric Pressburger himself. (Unclear if Michael Powell has his own label that we just don't get a clear view of. . .)

The Kingmaker Histories: No female character in this show has ever done anything wrong. Colette gets a migraine pass. Ariadne can turn people inside out. Daphne is owed this for working in a theme park.

Life With LEO(h): Janiiiiiine, so messy and smart and dedicated and she cares so much, I love yoooooou.

Me and AU: Kate's worries and desires and doubts are some of the realest out of any audio drama so when do I find an Ella too

Palimpsest: My faaaaavorite gothic horror anthology, each one fresh with a different brand of haunted, tormented, secret-keeping (and quite frequently gay) gothic protagonist

The Pasithea Powder: Jane and Sophie. Sophie and Jane. What more could you need? <3

The Silt Verses: Women who start cults/leave cults/seek an end to the endless cycle of meaningless sacrifice as so valid. For all your wet cat(fish) woman needs.

Small Victories: You want sad wet cat women? How about one that literally can't stop self-sabotaging (but at least manages to draw the line at sabotaging others...occasionally). She even gets stabbed!

Starfall: I mean, kind of a given, but anyway, Leona definitely exists because she's the kind of action protagonist woman I always wanted - one that could be unapologetically powerful, but still full of flaws and desires (especially ones that weren't about falling in love and minimizing her own strengths). She's even autistic!

Stories From Ylelmore: Keryth! Keryth, Keryth, Keryth! She reminds me so much of the kinds of characters I would make up when I was younger - I love her and her small magic so dearly.

Cissie King-Jones: A Women's History Month Feature

Just two weeks ago, 22 year old Cissie King-Jones won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her starring role as the original Black Canary in the 2024 biopic The Justice Society of America directed by Christopher Nolan. With this victory, King-Jones has officially won half an EGOT, with her prior Emmy win for her performance in the Marvel television drama Hawkeye. King-Jones has truly cemented her spot as one of the fastest climbing young celebrities in the world.

King-Jones journey to stardom started six and a half years ago when she appeared out of the blue and won gold at the 2018 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. She reportedly walked into the tryouts for America’s archery team, blew everyone else out of the water with multiple bulls-eyes, and secured her spot on the team.

The 2018 Summer Olympics famously faced severe criticism for their decision to allow the island nation of Zandia, populated entirely by supervillains, to compete. Among their archery team was Deadline, Merlyn, Turk, and Tigress, accompanied by a full roster of other villains to compete in the other games.

King-Jones was personally affected by the inclusion of Zandia in the Summer Olympics. Three days before the archery contest, the star archer of Team USA, Tina Thomas, was attacked in Olympic Village and had her arm forcefully broken. King-Jones’ mother, Bonnie King, was one of the primary suspects in the case due to footage that reporter Ace Atchinson captures of King speaking to the archer and assassin Merlyn just before the attack. King was taken into custody, and King-Jones was disqualified from competing.

It took the intervention of Natalie Rodriguez, a fellow teammate on Team USA’s archery team, to acquit King and restore King-Jones to the competition. Natalie is deaf, and was skilled enough in lip reading to be able to make out King’s words on the audio-only tape provided by Atchinson. Tina Thomas was later able to confirm she was attacked by the villain Hazard.

King-Jones would then go on to compete in the archery competition. However, she was nearly shot with an arrow in the middle of the competition by the villain Huntress, who wanted to ensure that Zandia would win. But thanks to her mother’s sharp eyes and quick intervention, King-Jones escaped injury and won gold for the United States of America.

After her very young and sudden victory at the Olympics, King-Jones was propelled into stardom. Her acting career began less than a year later, when she guest starred on the famous Wendy the Werewolf Stalker as Luella Ponel. King-Jones befriended star Terri Jewel Jackson through her role, a connection that would soon prove valuable as King-Jones began her career in Hollywood.

King-Jones then began to work her way through supporting roles and eventually lead roles on a number of well known shows and movies such as Metropolis 99, Peter Johnson and the Celestials, and Intergalactic. Eventually though, she received the lead role as Kate Bishop in Hawkeye. In 2021, King-Jones received her Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a drama series for her work with the show.

Since then, King-Jones has continued her work in Hollywood, and starred in a total of seven television shows and five movies, in addition to a large number of further supporting roles. She has also continued her archery, winning gold again for the United States in the 2022 Summer Olympics, and has announced she will compete again in the 2026 Summer Olympics.

In addition to King-Jones’ great success in the sports and entertainment industries, she has also become one of the favorites in the tabloid and gossip realm. King-Jones has been routinely spotted with the young socialite Timothy Drake-Wayne and superhero Wondergirl, Cassandra Sandsmark (check out our women’s history month post on her here!) They appear to have struck up a friendship after the disastrous attack by Devastation on the Blythmoor family’s annual charity gala two years ago. In fact, King-Jones just released her first single, titled Let the Arrows Fly, and recently confirmed her casting as Beatrice in the new Broadway production of Much Ado about Nothing.

King-Jones’ young success and bright future continues to inspire young girls who look towards the entertainment and sports industry worldwide, and proves that women don’t have to choose. They can be both a gold-winning Olympic athlete and one of the fastest-rising young stars in the world, or whatever else they choose to be.

If there’s one character in Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula as fascinating as the arch vampire himself, it’s R.M. Renfield the zoophagous patient in Dr. Seward’s mental hospital, who has fallen under the vampire’s spell. But Stoker provides no explanation of how Renfield came to be imprisoned, nor of the origins of his strange relationship with his Master.

Marty Ross’s audio drama imagines a whole back story for the character – the story of a tragically ordinary Victorian shopkeeper, stuck looking after ageing parents and prone to a furtive fascination with blood.

Desperate for relief, he goes for a holiday in Whitby, on the Yorkshire Coast, where he experiences premonitions of a vast supernatural power approaching across the sea, a force that will bring meaning to his life, but only of the most terrible sort.

Harry won the Carleton Hobbs Bursary award in 1998 and has twice been in the BBC Radio Drama Company. Since then he has appeared in hundreds of radio plays & serials for the BBC, including Home Front; and The Archers; and for Big Finish, including playing Adrian Wall in the Bernice Summerfield adventures; & multiple characters in various Dr Who titles.

More recently, Harry has worked on many productions for Audible including the Sam Mendes Dickens Trilogy; The Sandman; and 1984. Notable video game appearances include: Darktide; A Plague Tale: Requiem; Baldur’s Gate 3;World of Warcraft. Harry has narrated numerous audiobooks and voices several trailers & commercials. He has also worked extensively in theatre, TV and film, although these days his main focus is his voice work.

Sarah Whitehouse

Sarah trained at the Birmingham Conservatoire graduating with 1st Class Honours. Notable work includes feature films Lapwing and Future Soldier and performance capture and voices for video game ‘Norse’ to be released on Xbox and PlayStation in 2026. Sarah has worked extensively in audio drama including Sam Mendes’ Dickens trilogy for Amazon Audible, all adapted by Marty Ross: Oliver Twist starring Daniel Kaluuya and Brian Cox, David Copperfield, starring Ncuti Gatwa and Helena Bonham Carter and Bleak House starring Ambika Mod, Miriam Margolyes and Thandiwe Newton.

Other projects with Audible include: 1984, The Sandman Acts III/IV and V, Halfway, Crush Hour, We Play Games, Billionaire for Sale and Jeff Wayne’s War of The Worlds. Sarah has just recorded her first Doctor Who story with Big Finish productions and The Rebel Moon audio series for Netflix/Wolf at the Door.

Elvish in the Hobbit movies

There is no official script available online for the 2nd and 3rd Hobbit movies. Most elvish dialogue from the Hobbit movies has been transcribed here, but they struggled to understand one of Thranduil's commands. So...

I disabled some audio channels to get a clearer voice clip, and tried to decipher this mystery.

From elendilion.pl: Thranduil to the Elf army: T: „Berio i ???!"

Someone suggested it's „Berio i nand a garas! (Protect the valley and city!)” but Thranduil definitely uses a word with M (you can read his lips), so it can't be "nand". Also, the orcs are only commanded to turn towards the city after this charge.

I believe it's "Berio i man dagra!" (Protect those who are fighting!)

berio: imp. form of beria- (“protect”) i: the man: who, what dagra-: do battle, make war

Following his command, the elven archers aim past a group of dwarves & elves already fighting orcs, and cull another wave of orcs that's charging into the already engaged group. They are protecting the ones doing battle from the next charge of enemies.
