Scientists uncover previously unknown properties of gallium
Nearly 150 years after gallium was discovered and added to the periodic table, University of Auckland scientists have uncovered previously-unknown aspects of the metal's structure and behavior. First identified in 1875 by French chemist Paul-Émile Lecoq de Boisbaudran, gallium is known for the low melting point which causes a gallium spoon to dissolve in a cup of tea. Semi-conductors rely on the unusual metal. The surprising discovery relates to gallium's behavior at the atomic level. Unlike most metals, gallium exists in the form of 'dimers'—pairs of atoms—and is less dense as a solid than as a liquid, akin to how ice floats on water. Gallium features 'covalent bonds' where atoms share electrons, also unusual for a metal.

No audio. Open captions. A video showing how well a crow understands water displacement with various tools -- dropping objects in water to raise the water level and reach a floating treat.
In a spell of dry weather, when the Birds could find very little to drink, a thirsty Crow found a pitcher with a little water in it. But the pitcher was high and had a narrow neck, and no matter how he tried, the Crow could not reach the water. The poor thing felt as if he must die of thirst.
Then an idea came to him. Picking up some small pebbles, he dropped them into the pitcher one by one. With each pebble the water rose a little higher until at last it was near enough so he could drink.

Why Indian Students Should Consider Studying in New Zealand
New Zealand is becoming a popular destination for Indian students seeking higher education. According to Martin Hookham-Simms, the Director of International at the University of Auckland (UoA), all eight public universities in New Zealand are ranked in the top 3% globally. This makes New Zealand an attractive option for students looking for quality education.
Educational Landscape
New Zealand’s universities are known for their high standards and global recognition. However, there’s still work to be done to promote New Zealand as a top choice for international students. The government supports this by creating policies that make it easier for students to study here, including streamlined visa processes and scholarships.
Benefits of Studying in New Zealand
Recent stricter visa rules in countries like Canada, Australia, the US, and the UK might make New Zealand an appealing option for Indian students. New Zealand offers a variety of programs and a welcoming environment, making it easier for students to find the right fit for their studies.
UoA’s Commitment to Indian Students
The University of Auckland provides various programs that focus on essential skills like critical thinking and problem-solving, preparing students for global careers. Additionally, UoA offers scholarships of up to NZD 20,000 for Indian students enrolling in full-time undergraduate or postgraduate courses.
Support for International Students
Currently, over 8,000 international students from more than 100 countries study at UoA, including over 600 from India. New Zealand is ranked as the fourth safest country in the world, ensuring that students feel secure while studying. UoA has numerous support services, including 24/7 campus security and a zero-tolerance policy towards harassment.
Mental Health and Wellbeing
The University places a strong emphasis on the mental and physical wellbeing of its students. They offer confidential counseling services and health clinics to help students manage stress and personal challenges in a culturally sensitive environment.
Research Opportunities
Students at UoA have the chance to engage in research projects and internships, gaining valuable experience. The university collaborates with leading research institutes worldwide, offering unique opportunities for PhD students.
Partnerships with Indian Universities
UoA has established partnerships with several prestigious Indian institutions, including the Indian Institute of Science and various IITs. They also lead the New Zealand Centre in Delhi, promoting research collaborations.
Advice for Prospective Students
For Indian students considering studying at UoA, Hookham-Simms advises coming with an open mind. Embrace new learning experiences, engage with the community, and take full advantage of the opportunities available. Studying abroad is a brave step, and students should make the most of it every day.
In summary, New Zealand, with its high-quality education and supportive environment, is an excellent choice for Indian students looking to expand their horizons.
