So I'm posting the middle of a story I've been working on as I never seem to get a whole story out and I'm still editing the other chapters. 😅 Who knows whether I'll end up posting the other chapters, but it's something at least! 🤷‍♀️🙈

"Penny brought a backup cake?"

"Yes, well, given you weren't able to have any last year, she deemed it wise to keep one in reserve." Grandma motioned to the poolside buffet.

"That, and she knew Grandma made the first one!" Alan whispered.

"I heard that!" 

The youngest Tracy scarpered, leaving Virgil alone with the decadent desert. Smooth chocolate dripped from the sides of the cake, which was carefully adorned with ruby red cherries atop swirled cream. 

How it had survived Alan's presence this far into the evening was a minor miracle in itself. Virgil scanned for the sweet-toothed teen but the astronaut had vanished.

"Ah well...all the more for me!" he shrugged happily.

The birthday bachelor was halfway through plating up a generous slice of the black forest gateaux, when he spotted Gordon and Tamara making their way back across the beach; their surfboards abandoned near the shoreline.

"Everything okay?" he heard himself call. The fact that Gordon was approaching sans board, and Tam was holding her head made it pretty clear that it wasn't, but a small part of him was hopeful that he was wrong, because...cake.  

"There was one rogue wave that toppled our boards. Tam decided to pick a fight with her board and lost." 

"Honestly, it's nothing - I'm fine!" 

Several Tracys straightened, ready to help, but Virgil was first to close the distance between them. Thankfully, the others continued with the celebration, as if not to overwhelm their injured guest.

"You're bleeding." 

"One of the fins nicked her just below her hairline." Gordon gestured.

"It's just a scratch."

"Let me see."

Gordon scooped her hair back in order for Virgil to gain a better look.

"Really, I told you, it's nothing. Can you both stop fussing? Let's just enjoy the party."

"Yeah, not likely. If fussing were an Olympic sport, you'd have podium victors one, two, and three here!" Gordon said, gesturing to his Grandma and two eldest brothers.

"This one here is your gold medalist." He nodded at Virgil.

The medic chose not to bite.

"You need it cleaned up and some butterfly strips applied. It's quite a clean cut, so should patch up nicely, if we see to it quickly." He set down his untouched cake.

"Really, it's-"

"Or, if you prefer, Virg can get the doctors at Auckland to take a look?" Gordon grinned.

Tam levelled him with a stare.

"Tempting as that is, what with Two being the best Thunderbird and all..."

Virgil stifled a laugh.

"Damn Virg, she must've really hit her head hard, if she thinks your green bathtub trumps Four!"

"I mean...Two does see more action than Four."

"Yeah, but Four has the more satisfied customers."

"Guys, you're both pretty..."

"Hear that Virg? She thinks I'm pretty! Wait, where y' going?"

"To find a plaster and hoodie?" As if to emphasize her point, Tam gave an involuntary shiver with the onshore breeze.

Virgil shrugged off his favourite plaid shirt and draped it over her shoulders. 

"Come on, there's a med kit back at the villa. I'll get you patched up."

"I can do it Virg; it's your birthday." Gordon offered.

"It's fine. I'm a gold medalist when it comes to fussing, remember?" He winked to keep the banter light. 

"Alrighty then. You kids have fun. I'm gonna go teach that board a lesson." The aquanaut gave a mock salute then trotted back towards the surf.

Some fun facts about the game from someone who went:

1) Everyone in my entire section was stressed as fuck and there was a collective sigh of relief heard all throughout Auckland after that ball hit the post. Definitely need blood pressure meds for the entirety of eden park

2) Everyone was mad or maybe annoyed by style of play? There were too many instances of passing back when they needed to, too many isolated runs, narrow play making, and lack of press. I heard someone behind me say they’ve been going to world cup games since 2007 and this has by far been the worst they’ve see the team play

3) there was a fire alarm going on during the game telling everyone to evacuate but everyone ignored it and we just played on 💀

4) That stadium was pro-US and u can tell the disappointment when the whistle blew and barely anyone was cheering. Everyone was just saying fuck we play sweden next

5) Funny that the changes made today was similar to what Tobin said earlier. Unfortunate, that they couldn’t play it right and now we lose rose in the next game

I wore my CP jersey hoping it would bring good luck but shit, now i have to wash it cause it was tainted by that abysmal showing lol

Første uge i New Zealand

Så gik turen endelig til New Zealand, og første uge er nu gået. Mikkel og jeg mødtes i Christchurch lufthavn d 30 december kl. 00:30 efter over fem måneder fra hinanden. Det var virkelig dejligt!

Vi startede vores tur med tre dage i Christchurch, hvor vi ikke lavede meget andet end at sove, hygge på vores hostel og gøre lidt klar til vores roadtrip. Vi brugte nytårsaften på en tapas restaurant med lækker mad og vin. Derefter tog vi hjem på hostel og begynde Ringenes Herre 1, hvor Mikkel faldt i søvn efter omkring 20 min. Vi gik altså i søvn kl 23:00 nytårsaften <3

Den 1. januar hentede vi vores lejebil, en Toyota Corolla, også begyndte vi vores rundtur. Vi skal køre rundt på hele New Zealand, og bo i telt. Vi starter i Christchurch på sydøen og afleverer bilen i Auckland på nordøen d 29. januar. Det bliver altså ca. en måned, hvor vi skal bo i bil og telt.

Første dag kørte vi fra Christchurch til Oamaru. På vejen stoppede vi ved Mt. Sunday, hvor vi så vores første Ringenes Herre lokation. Dette bjerg er nemlig lokation for byen Edoras. Det var en kort tur til toppen af Mt. Sunday, men udsigten var virkelig spektakulær. Virkelig godt startskud for vandreture i New Zealand.

Da vi landede i Oamaru, havde Mikkel fundet en campingplads, hvor der boede pingviner. Ved solnedgang sad vi altså ved havnen og spottede pingviner i vandet. Vi fik set to pingviner svømme, og en der hoppede op på land og gemte sig under en kano. Det var en meget hyggelig aften.

Dagen efter kørte vi til Dunedin, hvor der var masser af stop undervejs. Vi så Moeraki Boulders, som var nogle seje runde sten på stranden, vi så vanvittig mange sæler, som i heeelt vildt mange, også så vi seje sten i vandet. Det var en dag med mange stop og meget kørsel.

D 3. januar brugte vi dagen i the Catlins, som er et skov område i den sydlige del af sydøen. Her gik vi en vandretur langs en flod, hvor der var mange bregner og en sej hængebro. Bagefter kørte vi lidt rundt og fik set en del vandfald, med masser af vand i! Derudover så vi også Cathedral Caves, som var nogle stor klippehuler i strandkanten. De var ret vilde at være inden i. Inden dagen sluttede, kom vi også lige forbi Curio Bay, hvor vi fik udsigt over sandstrand og store bølger.

Da vi vågnede d 4. januar kørte vi ud på den sydligste del af sydøen, Slope Point, inden vi fortsatte mod Te Anau. På vej mod Fiordlands, stoppede vi ved nogle Lime Stone Caves, hvor man altså kunne gå nede i huler i jorden. Vi skulle frem med lommelygterne for at manøvre os rundt dernede, da der var bælgravende mørkt. Her fik vi også set vores første Glow Worms, som er orme der skinner i mørket. Det var en lidt skræmmende, men også vildt fedt tur! Vi fik da også lige vores første regnvejr på turen, så der blev lavet mad udenfor iført regntøj fra top til tå. Heldigvis stoppede det ca. en timer efter vi havde lavet mad (vi vidste ikke, hvornår det stoppede), så vi kunne sætte telt op i tør vejr. Men regntøjet blev testet, og det holdt!

I dag, d 5. januar, har vi gjort os klar til vores tre dags vandretur på Kepler Track, som vi skal på i morgen, d 6. januar. Det glæder vi os helt vildt meget til, da vi får mulighed for at opleve Fiordlands på helt tæt hånd.

Best Awards – Case Studies

I looked at the Public Good section of the Best Awards website to get some inspiration for my project and to better understand the methods of communicating that work best to communicate to specifc groups in our communities.

Big Deal So What (Jenna Billman) – This was a really interesting campaign. I like how the student facilitated community participation by placing posters with stickers on them around the city so to feel included people would see that they aren’t the only that doesn’t know how to do something (ride a bike etc). For my project I aim to do something in a similar realm by creating interactive posters around Auckland CBD.

More than words (Sabrina David) – I like the use of illustration here to assist people to live better lives. My concept for prompt is quite different to this although I did initially consider making a card game to assist elderly with their devices but later decided I was making everything more complicated through my solution than it needed to be. Although, this project here simplifies speaking a message for young people and therefore is a solution that works.

Mixed Meds (Clemenger BBDO) – I really like how this campaign uses the shock factor to drive the message home. The deadliness and danger of driving with mixed medication is demonstrated through a visual display of medication on a shelf. This almost in a sense may make the target audience question themselves before they make the decision to drive mixed. I really like this technique and will try to use shock factor to drive the message home of the dangers of social isolation.

Wanting to get more familiar with the site and also check out what kind of buildings are around the site, I walked towards uni along the Domain Drive route and came out of the Grafton entrance.

Right outside the Grafton Entrance is the Auckland Hospital and Med School. Neighbouring these bustling, restless areas, the Domain attracts people to have their lunch here on their breaks, go for a walk and find rest.

It's been a heck of month... feels like 7 months to my bank account and stress levels. Lucky's heart murmur has now reached needing meds stage, good news is he can carry on hooning around as normal and meds will just help stop it progressing. He was a really good boy for the ultrasound, just laid there enjoying the cuddles from the nurse while the cardiologist took a look. His heart needed a check because surgery was needed; he's had a murmur for a few years but it's been getting worse so vet wanted a full check up to make sure surgery would be safe. A hard lump in his neck that I initially thought was a clump of hair, turned out to be a blood vessel tumor and it needed removing. It'll be checked to make sure it's not malignant. He needed to be on new heart meds for a week before surgery. They found another tumor as well and removed that too. While under, old man warts were removed from his face and head because he's a lunatic and keeps bashing them and making them breed. Heart meds are working well and Lucky can sleep on his back again without coughing, which is making him happy. While one was in, figured they'd be happier having company, and Peanut's spare boob lipoma was starting to get in the way of her harness and walking. While she was under, vet removed loads more lipomas and old lady warts, plus some melanomas around her eyes. Lucky is back to normal and all good. so auckland received unprecedented amounts of rain and flooded yesterday and our mayor was completely absent for the first few hours of evacuations as things got worse. here's the shit he's said since:

This MMI booklet helped me a lot in structuring how I would prepare for this interview. The booklet also has some good questions so I suggest you trying to form groups with your friends and practice! I basically divided my preparation into the following parts:

NZ Health system & NZ Health Issues

Being aware of NZ health issues and the health system is a key part of the interview. 

Being my nerd self, I prepared for this by reading lots of articles online and typing up some notes. I don’t suggest going overboard with this, I only wrote down information that I think is super crucial; don’t go learning numbers/statistics, etc. They don’t expect you to learn the exact laws/policies behind each one of them either; the key thing is to have a general idea of each of these issues and have a general opinion on them. 

It’s good to have a general opinion on the following issues and have reasons why (and acknowledge the opposing argument to your opinion, and why people may have this opinion):

Euthanasia

Abortion

Cannabis

Complementary and Alternative Medicine

Animal testing

Sugar tax

Vaping as an alternative to smoking

... etc

It’s important to be respectful when you get asked about the opposing argument to yours; as the Sample MMI scenarios document says, “Remember that you are not being judged on the “rightness” or “wrongness” of your answer. You and the interviewer will each have a personal point of view shaped by education, social conscience and personal experience... It is quite likely that you and the interviewer will perceive the issue differently but it is not where you stand that you are being scored, it is the way you discuss the topic and form your opinion. If, as the interview progresses, you find yourself changing your mind then don’t be afraid to say so. By the end you will have had eight minutes to think about the issue, not just two, and being prepared to shift your position shows that you are open to change and have gained something from the conversation. Any interviewer will view this positively.”

Other tips

Compile a bunch of practice questions and practice with a group of friends! I personally found it really helpful to get feedback from other people. This is particularly helpful for the acting station.

Know your reasons for why you want to be a doctor - simply saying that you want to help people may not be enough; since other health professionals like nurses, etc do the exact same thing. Really think of why you want to be a doctor.

Don’t memorise answers since interviewers generally pick that up; just relax, go in and be yourself.

Relax before the interview!! Don’t go reading your notes before the interview since that will probably just stress you out. Play your favourite game the night before, light a candle, have a relaxing bath, drink your favourite drink before the interview! Motivate yourself!!

Be careful when going to those free MMI workshops and take their advice with a grain of salt; I remember going to one in first year where they told me that it is important to stand firm when expressing your opinion because interviewers like to see that you don’t get easily swayed (which is completely untrue)
