“Wanna go back to bed,” Louis whispered languidly, voice partly muffled by his boyfriend’s lips on his. “Mm, but we just got up, baby,” Joel murmured. Lips touching softly with each syllable. Hands groping the soft flesh around Louis’ hips, kneading at the skin there and feeling his curves.

Binding Mechanics
I said in my presentation that I want to explore paper mechanics.
I came across a video of a unique book binding technique called ‘Glendex Lectern Binding’
It seems pretty ambitious for this project but I think it will be an unconventional way to bring some of the past/history into the work (traditional masculinity).
Whether it is feasible… Who knows? Maybe I can have a chat to Fleur. I was thinking of using some metallic or coloured cover crafting in the cover to relate this object to men.
Due to its odd looking nature when it is on the shelf amongst other books it may intrigue the male mind which likes to understand how things move and operate this may then engage them to begin reading some spreads.

Mindmapping Keywords in Class
Step 1: Mindmap keywords
Step 2: Record database findings
Keyword 1 – Male Self-awareness
Levant, R. F. (1992). Toward the reconstruction of masculinity. Journal of family psychology, 5(3-4), 379.
Levant et al. (1992) proposed a set of seven traditional male role norms: Avoiding femininity, restrictive emotionality, seeking achievement and status, self-reliance, aggression, homophobia, and nonrelational attitudes toward sexuality.
Offer, S., & Kaplan, D. (2021). The “new father” between ideals and practices: New masculinity ideology, gender role attitudes, and fathers’ involvement in childcare. Social problems, 68(4), 986-1009.
Specifically, it focuses on “new masculinity ideology,” a previously unexplored masculinity perspective associated with values such as authenticity, emotional expressivity, and holistic self-awareness
Keyword 2 – Hyper-masculinity
Iwamoto, D. (2003). Tupac Shakur: Understanding the identity formation of hyper-masculinity of a popular hip-hop artist. The Black Scholar, 33(2), 44-49.
HIP HOP AND "GANGSTA RAP" have been widely criticized by the public as well in numerous political (liberal and conservative) and religious arenas (Fried, 1999). Many critics declare that this type of music is not only extremely vulgar, but that it also perpetuates physical and sexual violence, and promotes sexism.
The Hyper-Masculine Front fuck you and your fucking mama! We going to kill all you motha fuckaz! .. . All you mother fuckaz! Fuck you, die slow, my 44 make sure all your kids don't grow! You mother fuckaz can't be us or see us! ("Hit Em Up!")
Vokey, M., Tefft, B., & Tysiaczny, C. (2013). An analysis of hyper-masculinity in magazine advertisements. Sex Roles, 68, 562-576.
Hyper Masculinity consists of four interrelated beliefs, namely toughness as emotional self-control, violence as manly, danger as exciting, and calloused attitudes toward women and sex (Zaitchik & Mosher 1993). Adherence to HM is linked to a host of social and health problems in North America, such as dangerous driving and violence toward women (Parrot & Zeichner 2003). Advertising is believed to play a role in constructing hyper-masculinity (Kilbourne 1999).
Avery, L. R., Ward, L. M., Moss, L., & Üsküp, D. (2017). Tuning gender: Representations of femininity and masculinity in popular music by Black artists. Journal of Black Psychology, 43(2), 159-191.
Findings indicated that representations of hegemonic masculinity were most likely to reflect hypermasculinity, characterizing Black men as competitive, dangerous, sex-focused, and materialistic. Portrayals of women were more likely to reflect hyper feminine attributes, emphasizing the importance of women’s physical attractiveness, utility as sexual objects, and emotional expressiveness. Representations of men as hyper masculine and of women as hyper feminine sexual objects increased over time, and were more frequent for rap/hip-hop music than for other genres.

Potential Speaker Notes:
You’re constantly distracted to a point that you can’t even appreciate the good things in your life that are passing you by everyday.
You should consider at the end of each day. What did I do today that was significant and impactful. How did I make someone else feel more connected. Because a day without meaning is a day wasted.
Let’s look at my screentime. Show graph and percentage of filler. What if I used this time more productively. What if I used it to feel more fulfilled as a human being instead of scrolling through social media like a zombie trapped in the system. I have the time. In fact, we all have the time to do more fulfilling activities.
Now some of this is productive but the majority of it is to fill in the moments of boredom and distraction. And I’m not the only one in this room with a high screen time usage.
Now in that hour of scrolling. What if instead I spent that hour walking through a local forest and learning from a new tribe of people I had never spoken with before.
Let’s say you had a class at uni 8-10 and another class at 2-4. Would you prefer to spend that time at the library scrolling through your phone pretending to study or would you prefer to spend the first two hours walking with a new tribe and then having a boost in productivity to actually get your work done in the remaining time.
I know what you’re thinking. Bro this is how people get murdered.
And for the most part this solution would do more social good than it would in damage.
Think of Pokémon go that had young people sprinting through the streets for a charizard
But now instead of catching animated creatures you are completing GTA style missions IRL (through prompt notifications)
But to Art galleries. And hidden local swimming spots and hiking trails. And it’s kind of like networking with a bunch of young people (with similar interests) you’ve never spoken to or met before but you are all here for the purpose of disconnecting from your screen and reconnecting with new people in the local community face to face. And it’s safe because people move in groups.
Promote inclusive communities where people feel they belong. This is a social media app designed for people to ACTUALLY be social
Create a tribe and join a mission with another tribe with similar interests. Work towards a common goal.
We have lost our tribal way of life
Someone may sit next to you on the bus and you may think man this person seems cool. But because of social constructs you can not interact with people in the community. You don’t want to make them feel uncomfortable right.
Jump in join the prompt.
Categories when you sign up for the app
Artsy
Outdoorsy
Sporty
People leave high school and feel like that’s their tribe for life. That’s how western culture works.

Week Four
In class this week I’d say about half the students talked about their writings in the reflection piece assignment, I did not speak about mine yet, and I wish I didn’t have to. But getting us out of our comfort zone is what makes us grow, so I will do it without complaining. Most people talked about the same thing when describing their papers, but it’s nice to hear when people look outside the box, and instead talk about the details with their parents and why they talk to them a certain way. I forget his name but his words stood out to me just because I’m the same way with my father, he’s very empowering and I have to talk to him with respect. Since this was also my first zoom session that actually worked, it was nice to see older people in the class, didn’t expect it, but I’m glad it’s like that. Our teacher is also surprisingly easy to talk to and straight forward about everything, I love it. Another week another dollar.

How is this Real?
Tumblr media
This has been my permanent workspace for quite a while now (look at that little feature of my Tumblr page hehe inception). It’s also been where I’ve been spending a lot of time, now that we’re all in quarantine. The pandemic of coronavirus still feels unreal, like something out of a dystopian film set in the year 2458. It feels strange having the whole family at home all day. Everything feels strange.
University life has been greatly affected by this virus, having all face-to-face classes and lectures cancelled. From having to take the train for 40 min almost every morning to the city, I now travel a total of one metre to my desk to take online class. Adapting to Collaborate Ultra has been interesting, and worked a lot better than I expected. We can still ask questions, turn on our video and audio, share our screens and collaborate in small groups with peers. We are very lucky to be living in such a digital age through all this, allowing us all to still stay connected. Heck, I even did a Zumba workout with a friend this morning via a Facebook video call. It would have taken a designer to help create Collaborate Ultra, which just further reinforces how important design is in helping people’s lives become easier. All the functions that are clearly laid out make this transition so much easier.
It’s been a bit of a challenge to go to uni and do uni work without the motivation of people physically around me. I usually work best when I have people around me also working, as I get less distracted. Instead, I’ve had to set specific times for work and leisure to keep me on track. Already having set times for live online classes has been helpful. Self-disciplining myself to do work has been made easier by having schedules breaks, and something to look forward to after, such as taking a walk outside as a reward. Having my workspace in my naturally-lit bedroom, many plants, bright colours, music playing and lots of snacks has really helped with my productivity in such a mentally stimulating environment, making work even more enjoyable. My current work situation could be related to the working life of a freelancer, a potential job I could have in the future as a designer. Freelancers too have to self-regulate their work, and be in charge of themselves with no others telling them what to do. So in a way, this situation has been a good way for me to see what my working lifestyle could be like, and has helped me learn good techniques for productivity.

project one reflection
After a challenging start where I changed questions and ideas a few times, I finally settled on an idea after being inspired by a material. I had lots of leftover lollies in my house from my brothers birthday cake this year, and I decided to use them up in an abstract way - all the research and examples I had seen so far utilised objects to create the physical letterforms, however I wanted to use the objects to create the area around the letterforms, and having negative space define the words. This way, a blank background would contrast heavily with the plain background and it would be interesting to try something a little different.
Starting with the typography and font, I wanted a thick font in a square like format shapes to define the words. I chose a font called ‘TT Norms’, and modified it a little to be bolder for legibility. I then printed these, cut them out and glued them onto cardboard. Cutting the letters from the cardboard proved to be the most difficult and tedious part of this project, but the stencil would be vital to create crisp, defined letterforms.
Tumblr media
Letter by letter, I added larger lollies around the most distinctive areas of the shapes, then filled in the gaps using sprinkles. At the beginning I tried using a glue stick and a hot glue gun, but I found that the lollies protruded too far off the page and the glue was too visible. So I did some research, and went out and bought adhesive spray glue. This was much easier to work with, as it could be applied before gluing and after to ensure everything was stuck down, and it was very compatible with the smaller sprinkles, and keeping these stuck to the page. However, it did leave a semi-white coating on top of the lollies, so they lost a bit of their colour. I fixed this in illustrator using the clone tool and increasing the vibrance.
Tumblr media
After creating the shape of each letter in the poster, I thought that the letters would stand out/contrast more if the entire background was made out of sprinkles and lollies, and would make it more ‘punchy’. I created a stencil for the background, and filled in the blank areas (after an extra trip to the shops to buy a fourth packet of sprinkles! whoops).
Tumblr media
Overall I am pretty happy with how it came out, however after feedback I think I should’ve played around a bit more in illustrator to make the sprinkles reach the border of the A3 requirements. Also, next time I will do any messy, big projects outside. One week later and I am still finding sprinkles everywhere!

Chat with Marcos
Today I spoke with Marcos about my new project direction of social isolation in young people.
He said I was targetting everyone and this was not specific enough to create the depth and impact I need to speak to a specific audience.
Marcos suggested I target a specifc audience
Here is how I define the audience for this solution:
1) University / Tertiary students.
2) Living in Auckland City
3) Aged 18 - 24.
4) Feel socially disconnected (connect face to face less than they know they should).
5)  Very heavy users of technology and have particularly excessive screentime on their phones.
6) Inclined to enjoy outdoor activities.
7) Enjoy walking, the unexpected and adventure.
8) Are physically active but not particularly socially engaged.
9) Mental health could be in better form (isolated and suffering alone).
10) Currently catch up with friends online more often than they do in person

For testing the design of the sea glass floor I decided on following mosaic techniques to achieve the look and feel I was after.
I tested this two different ways. The first was by placing the green shards on a base of clay, and filling the gaps in between the shards with more clay to encase the shard edges and hold them in place.
With the brown test I would push a shard down into the clay, pull it off, and then cut into the clay to remove a portion so that the shard would fit into the clay.
