Japanuary III: Yojimbo (1961) - Recap
Tumblr media
Recap
As the title sequence plays, over footage of a rōnin, who we'll refer to as the yojimbo (Toshiro Mifune), walking through the Japanese hills, we get an honestly pretty sick musical riff, which blends a more Japanese genre of music with a western jazz feel, and honestly, I can dig it. The music here is Masaru Sato, who was apparently influenced by the legendary Henry Mancini for this soundtrack. And yeah, I hear it. So, great start for me, and one of those all-too-rare times the music makes a heavy impact for me in a film.
A father and a son are arguing, when the yojimbo happens upon them. The farmer father is trying to implore his son not to become a gambler, but the son is tired of living in poverty and runs off, to the dismay of his hard-working father. The yojimbo asks for some water (and just kinda takes it), while the farmer and his wife complain about the state of the next generation, and of the town itself, which is expecting a silk fair to roll into town. The yojimbo walks into town, curious, as all the townsfolk are hidden away. In the process, a dog approaches with
Tumblr media
Um. OK. That's definitely normal. The yojimbo is soon approached by Hansuke (Ikio Sawamura), the weasely constable of the town who informs him that several businesses here are looking for protection, and could hire the yojimbo as a bodyguard, the salary for which he asks a cut. Corrupt and weasely, then. The town is, apparently, overrun by yakuza, which the yojimbo encounters and quickly turns away from. He instead goes to a restaurant, run by Gonji (Eijirō Tōno), a struggling restaurant owner who elaborates on the town's struggles, and the battles between two rival yakuza bosses. It's, uh...it's a lot of exposition, gonna be honest.
But said exposition reveals that rivals Seibei (Seizaburo Kawazu) and Ushitora (Kyū Sazanka) are fighting over the inheritance of the town's yakuza clan. The constable Hanasuke is corrupt, the mayor and silk merchant Tazaemon (Kamatari Fujiwara) is cowardly and useless, the sake brewer Tokuemon (Takashi Shimura) sided with the new gang and declares himself the new mayor, and the casket maker (Atsushi Watanabe) is rich-as-shit under the new paradigm. And all this immediately convinces the yojimbo that he's staying to cleanse the town...for money, of course.
Tumblr media
The yojimbo goes out and offers to protect the town from its occupation. He fairly quickly encounters a gang of gamblers, who attempt to threaten the yojimbo, and are incredibly ineffective, both because they're posers, and because he just immediately kicks their asses, and chops a dude's arm off in the process. Yeah, he's pretty immediately effective, and the entire town sees it. It takes no time at all for him to prize money from yakuza lord Seibei, and gets a hefty sum from him as a result. However, he overhears Seibei and his wife Orin (Isuzu Yamada) plot to kill him before he has time to collect his sum for the job, and they enlist their meek son Yoichiro (Hiroshi Tachikawa) to do it. Yoichiro, by the way, is the reason all this is happening, because Seibei's decision to appoint him as heir to the gang made Ushitora rebel and form his own group, complete with blackjack and hookers.
When they ask the samurai's name, he calls himself "Sanjuro Kuwabatake", after a mulberry field outside in some Usual Suspects-Keyser Soze-type move. And it's at this point that I realize that the film has never actually named the yojimbo. Huh. So, yeah, we'll switch to calling him Sanjuro, though. Anyway, Sanjuro's appointment upsets Honma (Susumu Fujita), his current master swordsman, who runs away just before a massive battle between the two groups at noon. As the two face off, Sanjuro reveals that he's leaving their services, knowing of their plot to kill him afterwards and taking understandable offense. He also announces this to Ushitora's gang, and walks off to let them all duke it out amongst themselves.
Tumblr media
So. This is definitely a Western. I feel like I can't forget that little feature. There's a battle between two rival gangs in a small isolated town at high noon. There's a corrupt sheriff and a cowardly mayor. There's swordfights in place of gunfights (and really pathetic swordfights, too, they're playing sad chicken with each other). And there's a lone man who can stand against it all. Yeah, this is a Western, and I'll mention more on that later. Anyway, we get the announcement that the fight is called off when a district inspector is coming around, and all the criminals have to hide away while the town pretends that it isn't completely fucked.
Now that his plan to let the gangs massacre each other has failed, Sanjuro waits with Gonji while the inspector's in town, and reveals that his plan is to extort the desperate gang leaders for as high a fee as he can. He also finally sees Tazaemon, the useless and cowardly mayor, who comes out of hiding to eat with the inspector, as do Tokuemon and Seibei, which reveals that the inspector is also corrupt. Meanwhile, Sanjuro is met by Inokichi (Daisuke Katō), Ushitora's secondhand and strong but idiotic brother, with the greatest unibrow ever committed to cinema. Orin also arrives to try and schmooze Sanjuro over after her "little joke" about murdering him earlier, and both compete over trying to gather his favor.
Tumblr media
Ten days later, the inspector is still in town, and the gangs are fighting over the favor of Sanjurbo, exactly as he predicted. Ushitora arrives at Gonji's tavern, flanked by his acromegalic bodyguard, Kannuki (Taku Iyaku). He's there to negotiate with Sanjuro, knowing that the fighting is about to begin again after the inspector leaves due to a magistrate's murder in another town, which Ushitora has nothing to do with, for real and for true. He offers Sanjuro more money to fight on his side, but he refuses, driving prices up even further. But when the fighting is set to start once again, it simply doesn't. Instead, the gangs make a truce to make way for the silk fair, which Sanjuro warns is simply set-up for even worse violence to come. And what's worse is, our rival is about to make his appearance.
Unosuke (Tatsuya Nakadai), Ushitora's younger brother, has appeared for the first time in some years, fighting on his brother's side. And what's more, he's packing heat! Yeah! He has a pistol, and I suddenly realize that this is taking place in the 1800s! To be specific, it's 1860, and Japan is headed headfirst into the Meiji Restoration. Interesting. How does the swordsman compete with the pistol? Excited to see that face-off. Anyway, this revelation is followed by the gambler's revelations: the town's gambling halls have to be shut down for the silk fair, leading to their anger and violence. Meanwhile, the assassins that killed the official in another town to lure the inspector away get blasted in Gonji's tavern, and Sanjuro overhears them talking about it.
Tumblr media
Recognizing the value in these guys, Sanjuro kidnaps them, then sells them to Seibei, while also going to Ushitora and telling them that Seibei is the one responsible for their capture, and getting money from him as well. A goddamn good hustle, I tell you what. The two younger brothers of Ushitora, Unosuke and Inokichi (Uno and Ino for short) kidnap Yoichiro, Seibei's son, in order to exchange him for the two assassins, which is done in the early morning. However, Uno kills the assassins with his pistol, and keeps Yoichiro in a double-cross, only for Seibei to triple-cross them and reveal that he's kidnapped Nui (Yoko Tsukasa), the mistress of the sake-brewer Tokuemon, an ally of Ushitora. Jesus Christ, these fuckin' people.
The following morning, this leads to yet another standoff between the gangs, where the exchange of Yoichiro and Nui is set to take place. This is thrown into chaos by the appearance of Nui's son, causing her to run for it, and Yoichiro to do the same. With the exchange made, rivalries are fueled anew. It's also revealed that Nui was sold to Tokuemon to cover the debts of her gambling-addicted husband, Kohei (Yoshio Tsuchiya), and has built a shed next to their house so Kohei can always hear Tokemon having sex with his wife, JESUS CHRIST, THESE FUCKIN' PEOPLE
Tumblr media
The next day, Sanjuro goes to Ushitora, offering his services in exchange for 30 ryo, and finds out where Nui is being held. Accompanied by the dim-witted Ino, he gets him to beat up Kohei, then rushes in to reveal that all six guards watching Nui are dead. Once Ino runs off to tell Ushitora, Sanjuro goes in and kills the guards, freeing Nui and telling her and her family to fucking RUN. He makes a mess of the guardhouse to cover his tracks, then shows a shocked Ushitora the devastation, blaming it on 15 of Seibei's men, and escalating the gang war further.
Soon after, Tazaemon's silk house is burned to the ground, as a salvo against Seibei for the return of Nui. Seibei retaliates by destroying Tokuemon's sake stores. Fight after fight afte fight, and the town is completely ruined, covered with dead bodies. Even the casket maker's depressed, because who needs coffins for this many bodies. Meanwhile, Gonji is uncharacteristically happy, because he's realized that Sanjuro is actually a good guy, after helping Kohei and his family. However, this revelation doesn't seem super-positive to Sanjuro. And that's made far worse by Uno and Ino's visit, who reveal that Kohei's family has been sighted, and that Sanjuro's treachery has been uncovered. A letter from the happy family seals the deal, and Sanjuro is taken in for torture and interrogation.

Beaten by the thugs and interrogated for the whereabouts of Nui, Sanjuro is not doing amazing. However, he obviously wouldn't know where there are, but still refuses to talk. savagely beaten by Kannuki and left seemingly unconscious. But, since these guys are honestly pretty bad at their jobs, and pretty stupid to boot, Sanjuro tricks them into believing he's escaped, then actually escapes in the process. Y'know, that old classic gag. He crawls his way back to Gonji's place, and tells him to tell his pursuers that he went to Seibei's place. While Unosuke doesn't believe him, the rest do, and Ushitora commands that Seibei's home and people be smoked out. When they leave, Sanjuro and Gonji plot to smuggle Sanjuro out of town in a coffin, so that he can return to kill Ushitora's gang.
On the way out, Sanjuro, Gonji, and the coffin-maker watch as Ushitora and his men kill Seibei's gang, his wife, his son, and Seibei himself. Sanjuro's plots and planning have finally led to an inevitable end. With Gonji's help, Sanjuro is safely smuggled out of town, and takes a few days to recover his health in preparation for the inevitable standoff with Ushitora's gang. However, the casket-maker arrives at his hiding place, and reveals that Gonji's been taken. He delivers a sword to an enraged Sanjuro, who returns to save his friend from the gang.

Holy shit, this rules. The fuckin' high noon showdown between the lone warrior and the gang of criminals, armed with a sword against several enemy blades and a fucking pistol? GOD, this shit rocks. Some actual Clint Eastwood Western shit right here. In fact, fun fact, this literally was Clint Eastwood Western shit...but more on that later, there's a fight about to happen, and it's sick. He takes out several gang members, including Ushitora and Inokichi, and kills Unosuke and gives him his gun as he dies.
And then, Tazaemon comes out of his silk house, STILL ALIVE SOMEHOW, wearing a samurai outfit and beating a prayer drum, clearly fucking completely insane at this point, finds Tokuemon and stabs him to death! Man...did Sanjuro ruin this town, or was it already fucked? Either way, the cowardly constable finally appears after the bloodbath, and Sanjuro tells him, Gonji, and the casket-maker that the town will be safe from now on. He takes off, says goodbye, and THAT IS IT! The movie is over with one final playing of Sanjuro's jangly theme, and DAMN! What a fuckin' movie!

Lexus "Next Chapter" from Caleb Slain on Vimeo.
Use headphones!  IG: @calebslain
5 productions. 4 countries. 3 continents. This sonic experience is the reveal film for the first ever Lexus all-electric car. The creative challenge was to express the imperceptible side of nature through sound, exemplifying the erosion between driver and natural world. Logistically, this was my first time directing any part of a shoot remotely (about 75% remote), which at one point involved directing two productions in Japan and Thailand simultaneously. Very fun challenge, made possible by the extraordinary talent who contributed around the globe.
Friends have asked how much of the footage we filmed ourselves, so I’ll come out and say there are THREE shots in this video we licensed and modified instead of filmed. See if you can guess them!
