Ok so there's this post that I've been thinking about a lot that basically amounts to 'i can't believe ppl actually care that Rose was 19 and the doctor was 900' and I've been trying to ignore it bc I don't care that much for starting fights over something like this (can't stress enough that you can go ahead and like whatever ships you want whether I agree with the ship or not. Go off) but, I do have many thoughts on it.

First off, I'm the type of person who just hates doctor/companion ships in general. It's a type of relationship where the dynamics of power are clearly unbalanced. The doctor is always the one in control of their adventures. If they want to go they have to be nice to him, and if they don't want to be stranded fuck knows where then they better listen to him (the doctor might not actually do that but he has threatened it at times like in Father's Day). He is also always the more knowledgeable one and the one they depend on to save them in the majority of situations.

When it comes to Rose in particular, her being incredibly young is baked into her character from the beginning. She is introduced as an aimless 19 y/o with no ambitions, no marketable skills, and stuck at a dead end job (which got blown up like ten minutes in). That's the very reason she wants to travel with the doctor. She feels stuck in this awkward time of her life where she has no purpose. Running away on some adventure, then, becomes her avoiding the growing pains of that precise time in one's life. So when she is forced back into her normal life, she doesn't see the point of any of it. She would rather give up everything and everyone (even her own life) to travel with the doctor. Reminder that holding the keys to the tardis is a big power the doctor has over his companions, and he can (and does) take the privilege away at any time. So for Rose, who gets self esteem and purpose from traveling with him, this power is doubled.

Not to mention that season one reminded us of her age constantly. The big emotional through line for the doctor (besides him dealing with time war aftermath) was his need to keep rose safe. He felt immense guilt at putting her into such dangerous situations. Whenever it seemed like shed died he'd say with great emotions, "she was only 19 years old, and now she's dead because of me. Because I brought her here" (not an exact quote but an approximate recreation of something he said often enough). The first season took her age very seriously. It was only season 2 where that stopped. Likely bc they couldn't pass up the chemistry between the two actors. (Of course even 9 and rose flirted often but they both insisted nothing was between them until the season end kiss).

And, of course, the show messed up by starting comparisons between her and Martha in season three. Martha by comparison is a woman with her life together. She has so many things outside of the doctor, which is why she's one of the few companions who chose to leave on her own. She isn't dependant on the doctor for her self worth. She has her life planned to some extent. The most she can complain about is a complicated family dynamic that forces her to be the mediator. Even more, she is defined by being mature, capable, and intelligent. This isn't a dig at rose btw, but that wasn't her at all. Her strengths were more in connecting with people, and it was often noted that she started to treat their travels like a game as time went on. She was often making jokes and highlighting the fun side of the adventures. All of her moments of going off on her own were characterized by her repeating things the doctor has said or observing things to tell the doctor later. There is even a part where 10 says that he wishes rose was there instead of Martha bc she would have figured everything out, much to the confusion of everyone who I've ever watched that episode with. It might have been the most delusional thing he ever said, and forced the audience to focus on how blatantly untrue that is. She would probably be flirting, making goofy jokes, or, at best, throwing out any idea that pops into her head until something sparked the doctor's thoughts. There is no way she'd be any better than Martha (who has already proved how capable she is by this point).

This isn't really supposed to be a hate post for any character or ship. But it is worth saying that it's perfectly reasonable to hate doctor/rose and also very reasonable to be squicked out by the age gap. Acting like ppl who dislike aspects of your ship are all unreasonable ppl who can't differentiate between fiction and reality is such a cope. Aspects of the ship are bad/weird. If you still like it regardless then just own it. Not everyone CAN just ignore certain aspects and enjoy it without thoughts. I'm sure there would be things I can get past that they can't. Just don't try to pretend you're so prosecuted for enjoying the main ship of three seasons that the majority of the fandom like just bc some ppl can't.

Anyway, rant over. Like I said, the post annoyed me but it's not worth fighting over so I probs won't even add tags. If doctor/rose shippers find it and get offended that's on them.

this was a lot, i don't even know where to start and how to formulate my thoughts.

i think i'll start with ms. bustier tho. i think i understand the intent behind her character--are at least the montage of what her character is supposed to demonstrate--but i think they really beefed the landing there. like it's all well and good to think positive thoughts and be kind to your fellow man or whatever, but if the other person is absolutely unwilling to actually try to be kind, i don't think you need to go out of your way to be nice to them.

setting a good example only goes so far. and for some, it won't be enough. they need to understand in a meaningful way how their actions and words may hurt others. and giving them brownie points for sometimes doing the right thing or owning up to their mistakes won't change them. esp if they go back to being mean all the time to others.

and i think the way chloe's character is written is just confused. she does constant heel-face turns, and because this show episodic, she never grows out of it or learns anything from it. she learns nothing from despair bear and she's learned nothing here. you can't expect me to take this character apologizing twice only for her to go back to being just as mean and racist as she was before.

back to bustier tho, i think it's the wrong message to give to people that "she let herself get overtaken by negative emotions" and also for ladybug to correct her and tell it's all hawkmoth's fault. like no! sometimes we do just act like assholes when we're in a bad mood! there's not necessarily wrong with that insofar that's a pretty normal experience to have. obviously we have to learn to temper it and not take it out on others, and we won't always succeed, but that's just fucking life. you apologize and try to do better. and the ppl who love you will give you grace.

as i mentioned before, i think this show could've done something really great with the whole set-up of how akumas take over and work. bc again, showing kids that anyone, at any point, can feel very strong negative emotions. and bc of that, they may act very mean toward others. that doesn't mean they're right to do it, but that also doesn't mean they were wrong for feeling that way. again, insofar as it's a very human and normal experience to feel strong negative emotions. and as long as you have a coping technique that doesn't rely on taking it out on others, it's okay to process and work through those feelings. it's okay to feel that, even if you know it's irrational. bc that's just what feelings are! they're irrational!! it's lizard brain!

i don't know what else i can say about chloe that i haven't already said. but i will say that i fundamentally disagree that bustier didn't punish chloe in some way for defacing a classmate's property. teaching her it's okay to do that will get her into trouble later on in life. that's just not an okay thing to do to anyone's personal property.

additionally, i really hated that people kept saving chloe. that they were forced by the writers to "set a good example" when it's going to do nothing to actually change chloe or her behavior. she's never going to introspect and she's always going to be mean. there's no point and their sacrifices mean nothing. she literally insults kim and rose as they're trying to help her. her sacrifice to save ladybug from chat noir is hollow.

speaking of, yet another instance of chat noir getting brainwashed to help hawkmoth. at least his cataclysm was useful this time, i guess.

i also really wish they had actually done something with everyone talking about how much they believed in and trusted ladybug to save them. this could've been really good narratively, as far as building her up only for her to fail in some way.

this would've been a really good episode where she fails and then has a moment of introspection and gets a new yo-yo and some new powers to defeat this akuma (or new villain if they hadn't been cowards and actually thought past hakmoth).

but no, she saves the day. like always. without the help of chat noir bc he's like half-lamp at this point.

but anyway, the injustice of what happened to marinette and then the narrative forcing her into a weird lesson about "setting a good example" will always piss me off. the whole thing is unfair. and chloe still gets a miraculous for it.

can't believe they really left bustier and chloe on the very top of the effiel tower. do they even know how to get down from there? tho at least chloe couldn't cause harm up there i guess.

vamp and wolfie worldbuilding

vamp is now named anastacio “butch” de rojas! in this anachronistic fantasy world hes a greaser. rival gangs used to call him “the butcher” bc of his job, ruthlessnes and bc his diet consists mostly of rare meats and blood. anastacio did not care for that at all and started to cut ppl off (in various ways) when they called him that so often that they now call him butch. his gang thinks its funny bc hes honestly not traditionally masculin at all. theres a butch lesbian in his gang who is playfully annoyed that they didnt get that nickname. he was conscripted into the army as a spy (bc vampires are much more common and accepted in the enemy kingdom, so people already expect them to be traitors,,) and sent to the enemy kingdom when they learned of an impending war between the two kingdoms. he quickly joined the enemy kingdoms army and rose through the ranks to the point that the queen openly favoured him. which was really helpful for his spying and also led to anastacio meeting shepard...

shepards (wolfie) full name is shepard connor and he is a farm boy and shepherd. he grew up in a small border village between the two kingdoms, which was officially part of the “enemy kingdom” and was kidnapped a few months before the war started. anastacio and shepard arrvied in the enemy kingdoms capital city around the same time but by very different means and reasons. shepard and a few others were used in experiments to create werewolves that were always in “wolf” form. the goal was to use them as bodyguards and an elite fighting team, loyal and vicious and easy to condition and control. the process was torturous and many victims were completly overwhelmed by their new instincts and lost themselves. shepard was lucky and didnt, but that allowed him to be aware of the fact that no one should know that. him and the other successful “mutts” (as they were unofficially called) of the first batch were given to the queens favoured as personal guards and servants, with shepard being assigned to anastacio...

anastacio feels understandably uncomfortable with the situation and does his best to treat shepard well, as well as not attract attention for not being a fan of the whole human experimentation thing. shepard notices this and after a few weeks the two start to figure eachother out. shepard discovers that anastacio is a spy and anastacio realizes that shepard has retained himself where most other mutts didnt. after some careful testing eachother out, they start to work together. shepard as a mutt, is not seen as someone who can retain information more complicated than simple orders. so he helps gather further information for anastacio, while anastacio gives him information on shepards family and gives him resources to relearn any skills he lost through the changes he was put through.

im not sure how or why exactly yet, but they get captured by soldiers from anastacios kingdom and anastacio is imprisoned in order to keep him being a spy secret. but im not sure what would make sense to happen to shepard... the kingdom prides itself on being like.. nice? but that doesnt mean they want to openly admit to knowing that shepard and others are not willing combatants or something. i know that the two are going to be seperated until after the end of the war though. after the war, anastacio is quietly released from prison and leaves the kingdom for a third one that wasnt involved in the war at all. shepard is able to leave as well and travels to try and find anastacio. he eventually does and they live together from then on!!

i think anastacios gang would want to get answers from him, considering he left a cryptic message for them (so they wouldnt be in danger), disappeared for years and is then very publicly jailed for being a ""traitor"". his family would have publicly denounced him the moment he was arrested, largely because people were already assuming them to be traitors. anastacio also doesnt have much of a relationship with his family and hasnt talked with them in about a decade. so they have no idea what his character is like apart from occasionally hearing of his gangs exploits. shepards family would not look for him... disappearances are semi-common and especially those without influence and power would prefer to believe that their loved ones were killed by the animals that are a danger anyways. rather than focus on them not ever really knowing what happened to them, if they suffered or not. maybe one or two family members or friends would try to find shepard, but the majority of the people that knew him before his transformation prefer to think he is dead.

IDK if this makes sense, but it annoys me when people group Elia w/ the other very white characters in the Dead Ladies Club b/c those people tend to ignore the intersectionality w/ Elia also being a WOC. Elia out of all the RR characters is treated in a very real raw unromanticized sense compared to a Lyanna or Ashara. Elia feels so much more like a character b/c of that, and it's strange when ppl equate how her brothers ppl who loved her for her compare that to how Ned/ Robert talk about Lyanna

I get that completely.

The other dead ladies are somewhat similar because they’re used and discarded - their presence in the story is limited to them birthing a main character and then they die. It’s gross, for sure, but we also have to remember that that’s not the case with Elia. What happened to her is worse. She’s not just dead. She didn’t die in childbirth. She was murdered after being raped after being humiliated in public after suffering through two brutal pregnancies at a rate that is inadvisable even with modern medicine and good nutrition. The people that mourn her don’t have an idealized view of her at all, they just miss their goddamn sister. It’s so far from the rose coloured lens through which we see those other women.

Let’s start with the non-Dornish characters we hear about Elia from. The three primary of those would be Cersei Lannister, Barristan Selmy, and Jon Connington. And what do they have to say about Elia? Nothing complimentary! Cersei disparages her appearance. Jon grumbles about her not being good enough for Rhaegar because of her health. Barristan makes weak attempts at saying something nice, but says something utterly generic instead of anything meaningful, then later thinks makes an unfavourable and unnecessary comparison between her and Ashara. That alone is enormously different from the comments random people make about Lyanna - Barbrey Dustin comparing Lyanna to a centaur, Harwin talking about how well she rode, different people reminiscing about her beauty, Robert wanting to see her crypt fifteen years later. It’s also different from the whole fairy tale going on with Ashara, where she’s remembered as ridiculously beautiful and rumours about her make it all the way up to Winterfell. Elia isn’t even romanticized enough to get an alias of her own in Howland Reed’s story. In that, Ashara is identified through her laughing purple eyes and Lyanna is identified through her house sigil, but Elia is defined as the wife of the dragon prince, rather than anything about her herself. And then you get the family members, and even there there’s a stark difference.

Oberyn loves Elia so much, but he doesn’t romanticize her. He doesn’t exaggerate or make a point of emphasizing any of her traits. He doesn’t idealize her. He just misses her. The Elia we see through Oberyn’s story feels so human - she loves babies and thinks Oberyn’s Breakspear-Breakwind joke is hilarious. Doran’s focus is on how she survived against all the odds. And neither brother makes a single comment about her appearance - why would they? Why would that matter? It’s not what made her special to them. It feels very realistic and painful to hear about her in this light. It’s a gorgeous view. But it’s very much unromanticized. I do in principle like the idea of women getting to be themselves, rather than idealized versions with all the flaws and humanity scrubbed away, but it’s uncomfortable when Elia, a woman of colour with such a brutal end, is the only one who doesn’t get that romanticization. Everything will always go back to how Lyanna died in a room filled with roses with her brother there to hold her hand, but Elia died alone with her family out of reach.

Ned talks so much about how beautiful Lyanna was. He brings her flowers, he idealizes her strength. Edric Dayne wants to talk to Ned and does talk to Arya because of romantic stories he’s heard of the aunt that died before he was born who fell in love and killed herself out of a broken heart. Joanna Lannister is idealized as someone Tywin truly loved and with whom the best part of him died. Even Rhaella, who isn’t romanticized nearly as much as Lyanna or Ashara and whose mentions mostly focus on the abuse she faced in her marriage, has that whole thing where Bonifer Hasty turned to religion because only the Maiden could replace her in his heart and died in childbirth, not because she was murdered. There’s nothing like that at all for Elia. She’s treated as a regular person, not the heavily idealized tragic romance heroine versions of Lyanna and Ashara that are immortalized in people’s memories. It’s impossible to disconnect that from how she’s a woman of colour. Brutal and gruesome vs romanticized and beautiful.

Also, there’s the issue of how romanticization influences fandom reaction, which is to a degree dependant on whiteness. Forgive me, this is going to be a rant that probably doesn’t make much sense, but I have so many complicated Dayne feelings because of this. Ashara is also a woman of colour, but the colourism in this is impossible to ignore. The Daynes are in effect conditionally white. Because of that, Ashara gets portrayed as some tragic heroine with a broken heart rather than written as a complete person with real wants and feelings. And when you combine that with how the Daynes aren’t especially associated with their liegelords the Martells...well, they collectively become a prop to be used to support the white characters. Fandom disregards their agency and obsesses over them while dismissing the other Dornish characters, not because fandom cares about them for themselves, but because they can be viewed as in service to the white characters. Case in point, all the speculation over Ashara’s connection to various Starks, the theories about the Daynes not caring about Dorne, all the endless talk about Dawn. How many fics are out there featuring Edric Dayne? How many of those fics are actually about him in any meaningful way in comparison to how many use him as a prop for Arya? What do you mean Ashara was Elia’s lady in waiting and probably her friend? Who gives a shit about Elia, not me, and so surely not Ashara, either! And the argument becomes that it’s not racist because the Daynes are white, which I repeat - they’re not. We can tell that by how Arya reacts to Ned. He doesn’t fit into her idea of what Dornish people are like, but the second he says something she doesn’t like, she’s basically, “that doesn’t matter, he’s Dornish, that makes him a liar”. It’s completely conditional.

The Daynes are barely mentioned in the text. They’re not characters. Elia is mentioned by name more times than Arthur and Ashara put together. Rhaenys is mentioned more times than Ashara. But it’s considered perfectly acceptable to care about and be interested in the Daynes or to believe that there’s a deeper importance to the family, while caring about Elia or Rhaenys gets all kinds of bullshit about our “self insert”. All this has to do with their conditional whiteness and the associated romanticization. Arthur died serving as a teenage girl’s jailer, but who cares, he had a cool sword, said dramatic lines, and was said to be a good guy! Ashara Dayne is the most minor of minor characters, but is painted in such a light that fandom insists she’s got to be important, even though we don’t know anything about who she was as a person. Which returns to how the character we do know about as a person, at least a little, is brown and unromanticized, so fandom refuses to believe she could matter at all to anyone.

I feel like I’m constantly screaming about this, but it’s gross just how over the top the brutality Elia faces is. She suffers through two pregnancies that nearly killed her but didn’t - completely unnecessarily, because there’s no actual narrative reason for that - and was raped and murdered after watching a baby killed in front of her. Her husband raped her. She was sexually assaulted by some random guy. She was imprisoned and used as a hostage to blackmail her brother and uncle. Romanticization is dehumanizing. But some degree of it is also natural, and the extent to which it’s avoided with Elia is highly questionable. She married a man that not only didn’t love her, but publicly spurned her for the sake of a teenage white girl. Unlike so many of these other dead ladies, she doesn’t have anyone in love with her or the idea of her fifteen years after the fact. There are no songs written about her. Why? Why is she not considered as worthy as Lyanna, Ashara, Joanna, Rhaella of having someone outside her family love her into the present? Why is she nothing but a cautionary tale?

jesse would be such a beautiful singer, not a doubt in my mind. his voice is velvety, a bit husky with a hard punch of power. i’ve entertained this thought on multiple occasions and will one day write smth with singing jesse.

echo though? akhdkshkakdj i never thought abt him singing before now but i can totally see it, his voice being a bit less gritty than jesse’s but with a smidge more range and a clearness that rivals the scarif oceans.

radar love by the golden earring - this is the song he first gets the confidence to dance to. once the crowd goes wild for it and he realizes how much he enjoys moving around, he keeps on doing it. there’s this one thing he does that’s like, um, jolting/bouncing (not sure how else to describe it) but the crowd thinks it’s great when he does it.

sexbomb by tom jones - his dancing here is utterly erotic and he knows how attractive it is, holy kriff. it’ll bring the entire bar staff to a standstill bc damn look at his hips go, sex god much??? most definitely grinds against the mic stand and gfgalkdfjghlkf it never fails to fluster quite a few patrons (this will soon be a full-fledged fic so keep your eyes open)

no mr. nice guy by alice cooper - he jokes sometimes that he was actually quite peaceful as a cadet before joining the five-oh-first. it isn’t a joke tho and you can blame fives and hardcase for making him go wild. but this song makes him think of when he stopped caring abt trying to impress the longnecks and he enjoys hitting the higher notes.

rock the casbah by the clash - this is where he learns to snap his hips to every “rock” with a bit extra force. the crowd has a blast clapping along, some of the more drunk people screeching “the shareef don’t like it!” at the top of their lungs. it’s upbeat 

rock this town by the stray cats - he’s having a damn good time with this song, a lot of elvis presley vibes. if he had enough hair he’d flip it. he does a bit of air guitar and will sway his mic stand around and bounce his knee to the beat.

strutter by kiss - he loves this one, it’s a personal favorite. he;ll be running his hands down his body when he’s still, but the times he’s walking around the stage he’s got a hand on his swinging hips, literally strutting. it’s so fun to watch him embrace the music

bad to the bone by george thorogood & the destroyers - a joking request from fives that turned into a crowd favorite. fives didn’t think his vod could do it but jesse rose to the occasion as he charmed his way through the song with his fun swagger and playful air sax. he drank quite a bit of water after this one bc he was unused to using as much gravel in his voice as this song took, but he enjoys it nonetheless.

echo would be softer with his choices, leaning more towards soulful and sweet in comparison to jesse’s wild side. he also plays both guitar and piano, i take no criticism on these points;

the night they drove old dixie down by the band - he plays this one after a rough mission and it’s deeply resonating with everyone there, everyone either putting down their drinks to let the song flow thru them, or grab something stronger to let it lull them into inebriation.

no plan by hozier - he sounds so beautiful with literally any hozier song tbh, but this one is his favorite. this was the closest he got to smth soulful before the times he duetted with jesse and he really enjoyed it. it was smooth yet passionate and is one he sang for the first time when dejected and unsure abt his future.

piano man by billy joel - he plays the piano for this song & kriff did it take him a while to both master it and find someone that played the harmonica well enough to join him. this is rex’s favorite song to hear echo play and will hum it quite often. echo enjoys throwing himself into playing this one in a way he doesn’t often do & he’s called “the piano arc” the first time he plays it. the nickname sticks but he likes it, so no harm done.

amie by pure prarie league - this was a fun song for echo to learn and he really enjoys how gentle it is. he’ll tap his foot with the music and just let himself go. sometimes he’ll catch himself moving his shoulders slightly as he plays but he doesn’t stop. when he plays this one, he prepares to hear his brothers hum it for at least a week afterward, it’s just that good.

house of the rising sun by the animals - this one isn’t heard until some time after he and jesse duet & echo exhibits his capacity to have a bit of gravel, which is absolutely heavenly when heard. there’s a lot of held-out notes here and a special kind of twang he’s able to finesse, it’s stunning.

skinny love by bon iver - he learned to play guitar to this song right here, it’s one of his faves and loves how tender & raw it can be. he’s heard covers of it that added too much to it & detracted from the intensity of the emotions, so he sticks with the original. it’s an extremely vulnerable song and it’s somber, but he enjoys baring himself without the risk of being shamed for it. several people cry the first time they hear him sing this song. (this one will turn into a fic as well, time tbd)

bad moon rising by creedence clearwater revival - echo sang this one for the first time tne night before the five-oh-first got their orders, which ended up being to felucia. there are always strange occurences when this song is sung & a few ppl will do anything to keep echo from singing it bc they think it’s an omen. everyone enjoys hearing the song, no doubt, but the moment it ends, some battalion or another is doomed to a bad assignment.

now if these two were to ever team up???? no one would be able to talk about anything else for weeks afterwards

you don’t mess around with jim by jim croce - they’re sitting on barstools in front of their mics, echo strumming on his guitar while jesse pats his thigh as a substitution to the drums. v playful vibes with this song and they can’t stop grinning as they sing. it’s fun and they’ll sometimes lightly tap each other with their feet throughout the performance to tease. lighthearted and always enjoyed.

all this and heaven too by florence + the machine - it’s got enough power for jesse but is also delicate enough for echo, achieving a great balance of their strengths as well as a tambourine. you’d probably think that jesse and a tambourine can cause as much trouble as hardcase with explosives, but he’s insanely focused on getting the hits right. no one expects to hear echo belt out such strong notes in contrast to his normal choices but damn they love it. and jesse?? softly breathing the verses with a delicateness no one thought he possessed?? they’re weak for them both.

soul shop by prophets and outlaws - they harmonize SO!!! DAMN!!! GOOD!!! echo playing the piano and jesse sitting on top of it just straight up VIBING. the entire bar is swaying with the music and letting themselves melt into the floor. none of them were prepared for echo to harness a little bit of gravel in his voice or for jesse to capture the melodic tone that echo doesn’t have to put effort into. this song, having a lot of soul and grit to it but is smoother than corellian whiskey, is a performance for the record books.

helo beloved mutual connor, im sorry ur goin thru it rn but i come bearing asks n a heart emoji (💗): bcuz i have had this thought floatin around for a lil bit, wld love 2 hear ur takes on an Adam/Eric/Mallick (+ Art too if u want!) road trip vacation! how long wld they go, do they get motels or camp or just sleep in th car? whats everyone's favorite road trip snack? what sorta shit do they like 2 stop for? (weird tourist traps like giant balls of yarn etc, small town main street stores, cool looking restaurants, nature sites, Actual Destinations, so on n so forth!)

ohhh I love tht idea!! road trip fics/hcs are one of my weaknesses,,

but um!! I rly like the idea of th four of them going camping a few hours up north!! (we... don't rly know where. SAW is set so just. imagine a vaguely rural campground lmao. I'm used to camping in th upper peninsula of MI so) it's smth tht Art did a lot w his family when he was growing up, so he's th most familiar w it - Eric went a few times as a kid too, Mallick went Once, n Adam has never rly been camping, w his family or otherwise (he's slept on a trampoline at one of his friends' houses once tho). Art is p excited abt it tbh, it's not exactly smth he gets 2 do often so he's got this whole list planned of things he wants 2 show them!!

it's easiest 2 just take a week in late August, bc they can head back home on a Friday n have the weekend to settle n readjust b4 th coming week + they have to go back 2 work. so they head out around ten on a Monday morning 2 kind of get ahead of th traffic (or at least try to). Art drives both bc he insists and bc he knows they can switch if he needs to, which he does later w Eric. it's a good couple hours (at least 3) b4 they get 2 th campground Art wants to take them to, so clearly it is Music Time + Adam made sure 2 bring CDs! a lot of that time is just spent vibing 2 th music and singing very, very loudly (ESP on Adam + Mallick's end). Art's up front like u three are so fucking goofy (affectionate), but eventually he starts singing too lmao.

Mallick starts th Colour Game, where they try 2 find a car fr every colour of th rainbow. it's smth Eric is familiar w as well bc he used 2 play it w Daniel sometimes, and it's good until they come to purple bc how often do u see purple cars??? so Adam's just like "we're not gonna find pink either" n tht's when this fucking pink pickup truck (noticeably spray-painted, + not done well) passes them n Adam just groans n thumps his head against th window. Mallick is like, trying rly hard not to laugh by pressing a hand over his mouth + Art is biting his lip, but Eric is very openly cackling bc "u see what happens when u assume???" (he gets a very light slap 2 th shoulder but it's still very gentle)

ANYWAY. favourite snacks!! Adam can eat Way Too Many Sour Patch Kids. sour anything, actually, as long as it's candy. yes his tongue hurts and no he doesn't regret it. Eric just gets goldfish bc he tends 2 get a lil carsick + bc it's a food tht's familiar n comforting, n he doesn't rly want 2 be eating anything Too heavy (he's up front w Art, so he can sit by a window in case he needs some fresh air at any point). Mallick likes m&m's, but he switches fr cheez-its every once in a while bc he can only eat so much chocolate. Art likes those peanut-butter filled pretzel bites! he's also partial 2 animal crackers tho. they also bring a good amount of snacks/things they can b sure th four of them like, bc yeah there's a lil store abt a half hour away frm their campsite + they can go there to pick up things if they need 2, but it's easier 2 bring things they like, too. (there's also a mcdonald's in tht town n. they do go there at LEAST twice.)

th campsite they stay at has a lake + a beach, n one of Art + Adam's fave things 2 do is walk along it to see if they can find anything interesting! Mallick goes sometimes too, but mostly he stays w Eric bc Eric can't do tht fr as long as Adam + Art can (not tht he's resentful of it tho). he n Mallick chill on th beach w a blanket (it's kind of like. not necessarily sandy?) n just kinda sit against/lay on each other n read sometimes. Adam + Art come back 2 where they're set up to find them sleeping n Adam has never been more thankful he thought 2 bring his camera!!

on th second day Art + Mallick want 2 go swimming, so th four of them come back out to th beach, but Adam stays out of th water + Eric stays w him. they both know th water will be cold, even if it's late summer, n Adam rly doesn't like being in cold water ESP if it's over his head/he can't touch th bottom. fr Eric th cold can b kind of painful, so they chill n walk along th beach fr a little bit n just talk. Adam gets some good pictures n even gets some of Eric! he also does take a selfie of them, he can't help it. he gets a couple of Mallick + Art too. it's honestly such a nice thing fr them n it just feels like they can breathe easy, not having 2 worry abt looking over their shoulders constantly (tho they're all getting better abt that).

th third day they spend around th campsite to kind of unwind n relax. they might walk th beach a little bit again, but mostly they just sorta chill n walk some of th trails around the campground itself. when night falls they light a small bonfire (Mallick is still iffy around fire, understandably) n they sit around it in their folding chairs w th cupholders (Adam gets red, Eric has green, Art gets blue, + Mallick gets dark green) n make s'mores. they talk abt anything n everything until they're barely able 2 keep their eyes open, n then after making sure th fire is pretty much out they kinda just stumble into th tent n none of them r awake for very long after (they specifically got one tht cld comfortably hold th four of them).

fourth day!! they pack up n head into another little town about 45 minutes away; it's bigger than th one around th campgrounds. after they get situated in a motel room w two beds, they do some window shopping + going into lil stores that interest them! Adam def buys some niche graphic tees tht aren't going 2 make sense to anyone other than th four of them n he's delighted abt it. I like 2 think Eric gets a worry stone, specifically made out of rose quartz. Mallick too, but his is made of amethyst! he also gets a rly cool multicoloured jacket in a thrift store they duck into. Art gets a hoodie w th town's name on it n he's pretty happy w that. they get a few more lil things, just little knick-knacks while they're there, n then they have dinner in this lil diner they'd walked past earlier bc it's inexpensive + the atmosphere is very lowkey n honestly just Nice. there's not a bunch of ppl, the servers r rly kind n the lights aren't too bright, which Eric rly appreciates. it's such a tender moment bc they're squeezed into a booth, Adam + Mallick on one side n Art + Eric on th other, n they're talking n laughing n stealing bites of each other's food n it's Comfortable.

then they head back to th motel n channel surf while unpacking enough 2 get to their sleep clothes. Adam + Eric r sharing a bed n Art + Mallick r sharing th other one, tho Adam is very tempted 2 just push them together so they're all close by (th distance btwn th beds isn't tht big to begin with, but it's the principle of th thing). mostly tho, until they go to bed, they're pretty much just all stretched out Everywhere. Adam is only discouraged frm jumping across th divide btwn th beds bc Art breaks out his Lawyer Voice, despite trying rly hard not to laugh, to say Yr Going To Hurt Yrself, Don't Do That. he grumbles n whines abt it but Adam knows he's right jdhjks (th way he sees it is like. he can b silly sometimes. he's Earned It, but he also trusts Art + wasn't super serious abt tht idea). eventually tho Eric can hardly keep his eyes open n Mallick is just straight up asleep while he's still sitting up so tht's when they all go to bed after making sure every1 is comfortable. they leave a lamp on.

fifth day they pack everything up again n stop 2 walk th trails of this lil park b4 they head home! there's a lil shop near th parking lot so they spend a lil bit of time looking around in there first. they probably pick up a few lil things, souvenirs, n Adam walks around 2 get some pictures. he gets this rly cool one while they're on a bridge, th sun peeking thru the clouds a lil bit n shining down on th water. he's super excited to develop tht one (but he's excited to develop All of them, bc this is his family!!!) + he n Art discuss whether or not they're gonna need another cork board lol. eventually tho they round back to th parking lot n on th way home, they stop at another lil hole-in-th-wall kind of place, but it's just as nice as the first one they'd been to. after tht Eric switches spots w Art n he drives them home!!

they're all exhausted when they get back but they have room to crash w each other while they nap so tht's what they do. they fall asleep all tangled together, Art stretched out w Eric's head on his chest, Adam curled against Eric's back, n Mallick w his head on Art's stomach. there r arms n legs everywhere n tht is okay. they're happy. they love each other. they had a lot of fun on their trip n they're tired, but they're comfortable!! tht's what it's all abt!!! it's just such a good n relaxing experience fr them after all th shit they've been thru.

Specifically season 3+ version of him, because he seems like less of a pushover by then. By that point, he also wouldn't be afraid to challenge your ideas when needed. He's dealt with Bakugo, someone known for having an explosive attitude, so it doesn't change much with you so act however you want, he doesn't care (unless you're really just rude but I doubt that’s the case). Though you might have to get used to the copycat thing with him for a while, because there's literally no way to stop him. By this point in time, he's less panicky and *sort of* knows what he's doing; meaning he's less emotional. He really isn't one to judge, he just wants you to feel safe, so do as you will. The problem is, he does like to talk ab the future and his plans, but then he impulsively doesn't follow them. It's quite annoying, so just focus on the then and there.

hmm not great at noticing these details (especially the first time around and in non-hq footage lol) but i Did notice (and appreciate) how all the characters were costumed quite differently in a very Personal Style sort of way, v helpful to characterize them each and help distinguish them earlier on. i did like susannah's costumes a lot with the yellow / purple and patterns and vests and carefully styled hair and her post-timeskip look was fantastic as well

again i was pretty focused on the foreground stuff really lol and i don't really remember anything where i was noticing something happening only in the background. but a more Literal background moment, i too really enjoyed the silhouettes of the girls striking poses being projected onto the bg behind susannah at the beginning of the show, very effective and Dramatic

i don't think i have a real answer re: what's Underrated mostly b/c i've already seen so much good analysis & appreciation from people about pretty much everything........so a vaguely tangential answer is about wishing it was just a Little more evident that Kitty And Dorothy Have Their Own Thing Going On, which like, yeah maybe it's easier to tell in person watching the show, but......and i Do like that kitty's connection to susannah is so clearly more general than their Relationships (or potential ones / wanting one) b/c of course susannah's dilemma around goes beyond Just the particular forbidden romance with this particular person

i also found judith's character like, nonzero engaging, which is just like i hadn't heard much about her  prior i don't think. not as though she's at all Likeable in the sense of like if you were in the show you would not like this character who is both a bully and a narc but it's still like, good for her eventually realizing the error of her ways even if it'd've been good to realize it Before miss asp made it clear she was only ever intending to use judith, and like, maybe if your snitching on a girl had indirectly led to her death you'd stop narcing on everyone instead of just setting up the same situation again. but at least she comes around and threatens francis and even her awfulness can be funnier than the awfulness of other characters who are being awful

just some thoughts on black friday mostly to get my own feelings out

i agree with people that it is very different than what starkid usually puts out, you could even sense it in camera angles, editing, choreography etc. and mostly because it is much darker than the previous ones. and i think that is what threw ppl off at first, but i believe the thing is that it doesn’t just have darker themes, it is in general just not a comedy musical. it has funny bits, mostly achieved through having linda, sherman, and the president (to some extent) be the comic relief, but it is just not comedy. 

it lures you in with the promise of hey look this cute tiny green doll is trying to take over the world! and then it gives you a dark story with multiple characters, all with their own past trauma and broken lives, just trying to find a seed of happiness, all convinced that they will find it in this toy. i mean how many of us are living with depression and past trauma, just trying to survive and looking for happiness in small, material things? i know i do it, in fact, it is a bit too on the nose bc my ‘little thing’ that i turn to just to feel something is starkid musicals.

i agree that there are a tad bit too many characters and plot lines in this show and not all of them wrap up tidily and it feels a bit unfinished. but i think it is the point. that black friday isn’t exactly character oriented but story oriented. it has a message that it wants to pass across, so it uses different characters to make that point. tom has convinced himself that a wiggly toy is going to ‘fix’ his relationship with his son and help them with the grief and the guilt; becky claims to want the toy for the little girl in the hospital, but she is most probably just trying to run away from her own trauma and guilt with what happened with her husband; linda tells everyone how she needs the toys for her boys bc she is a perfect mother and she wants to make her boys happy, but we find out that deep down she is just seeking for adoration and worship. but at the end, none of it matters. bc this is what consumerism does; prying on your insecurities, failures, and wishes, trying to convince you that this is what you want. this product. it will solve all your problems! 

so i feel like this is the point. that we shouldn’t watch this musical expecting a comedy, and expecting a character story. (if that makes sense)

and about the songs. i actually really enjoyed the songs personally, i saw people saying that they weren’t as memorable, but i think we gotta remember that this show has the most songs out of all the starkid shows, which just means more potential for a miss, as much as a hit. but yes imo it did have very catchy tunes.

and i especially enjoyed how they used songs from tgwdlm and ‘carol of the bells’ as background music. and having the in universe movie ‘santa claus goes to high school’ was a nice counterpart to having an in universe musical (working boys) in tgwdlm.

i do agree that angela’s voice wasn’t particularly powerful, but i wouldn’t call her a bad singer. i think she does have a beautiful and unique voice, she just needs more practice. also. let’s not forget that the role was written for mariah rose faith originally (and most probably the songs too). all im saying is starkid doesn’t hold open casting calls, they employ their friends. so when you lose a superb performer like mariah who just happened to be your friend, it is hard to find a near perfect replacement. 

that being said, i still loved angela as lex immensely, the dramatic performances delivered by angela, kim, kendall, dylan were superb. 

my only criticism about songs would be that harmonies just didn’t do it for me. they all are amazing singers, but the voices just didn’t blend in too well in most parts. 

edit: oh and i agree that this was most probably set in an alternate universe and wasn't exactly a sequel or prequel to tgwdlm. it was foreshadowed a lot by general mcnamara's comments and i especially found hannah's song at the end to be very peculiar in its lyrics. "do you all see what i see, what i know. do you all see the memories tomorrow reminds me. tomorrow will come, tomorrow won't come." to me, it is as if, hannah is able to look into the 'black & white' and see the multiple alternate universes and all the possible outcomes. there is a tomorrow that came in hatchetfield when paul failed to wipe out the alien race, and there is the tomorrow that never came in hatchetfield bc they (most probably) got hit by a nuclear bomb unleashed by russia.

the main thing u need to know about ivy is that she is lying ! always !! her real name isn’t even actually ivy smh

she was born natalie rose serrano, to two working class parents in new york city. she knew from a young age that she was just supposed to be rich and famous, and that something had gotten mixed up somewhere and she was put in the wrong life.

in high school she got a scholarship to a fancy private catholic school, and that’s where she started to hone her craft of manipulating rich people. she would befriend all of the richest bitches at school and take advantage of everything that came along with it: vacations to far away places, stays in the family’s cabins and lake houses, even designer clothes that her friends no longer wanted and would gift to her, thinking it was their idea all along

as she grew up and got better at getting what she wanted out of people, her entitled attitude only got worse, driving a wedge between her and her parents, who kept waiting for her to develop a work ethic and kept being disappointed. a few months after she graduated high school, on her 18th birthday, her parents kicked her out of the house and cut her off, hoping that it would force her to grow up and take on any responsibility

but that plan backfired for them, her parents underestimating how truly stubborn natalie was. the day after her 18th, she wandered into a local strip club and got a job, figuring it’d be the easiest and quickest way to get some cash, and she took to it naturally and actually really enjoyed stripping

she started to embody an entirely new persona that she had created for herself, dancing under the name poison ivy and telling everyone she was a trust fund baby that had been cut off from her rich parents, needing to dance to supplement her income, and her lies just continued to spiral out of control until she almost started to believe it herself. she had never told anyone at the club her real name, not even the other strippers, just going by “ivy” for a while.

she had learned to weaponize the power she had over people by being pretty and charming, using her looks for absolute evil and doing whatever it took to get money—from straight up pickpocketing, to making men buy her expensive gifts, to blackmailing, to sugar babying, to getting patrons wasted and manipulating them into tipping her absurd amounts... she did it all, very quickly earning enough to live the life she had always dreamed of, that she felt she deserved for whatever twisted reason.

she started posting on instagram with the name poison ivy generally just flaunting her carefree, extravagant life, often exaggerating or down right lying just to really dazzle her quickly growing audience

as she started to go down the influencer route, she realized she needed to do something to hide the skeletons in her closet ( the fact that she didn’t actually come from money and was making far more than was normal for even the best of dancers, a couple of small possession / shoplifting charges, and just generally anything that could lead people to her real identity ) so she started to tell people her name was ives, fully taking on the new identity. she even went so far as to make some of the people that had been closest to her sign NDAs about her real identity, making sure that no one could sell info about her should her plan of being famous work out

and it did work out !! at first she was definitely buying followers/likes to boost her likelihood of brand sponsorships, but eventually she faked it until she made it and actually attained influencer status

she also started sleeping around with pretty much any famous person she could, having very public relationships and breakups and scandals to keep her name in the press, which ultimately lead to more exposure/people following her, if only to see what she did next, which lead to even more sponsorships

she’s probably been in kingsboro for a few years, living in a super fancy one bedroom apartment that she definitley doesn’t pay for ( she doesn’t even know how much her rent is tbh )

eventually she stopped dancing and just focused on her influencing or whatever, but she never stopped sugar babying and scamming rich stupid men, still very much using that as a means to keep up her lifestyle. she’s also done a few modeling things, but it’s mostly just like catalog work or being the face of a trendy campaign bc she’s way too short for the runway

she also recently made an only fans account bc she was bored one night and was mostly planning on posting once as a joke but then she made a bunch of money / got a bunch of subscribers and was like oh word ? i can do that ! so she will post on there from time to time but she’s not like... super serious about it ya know ?
