Engage's fascinating color theory

A lot of this could be a happy accident, but I'm sticking with it

Every nation has a national color that is used to represent them. Firene is blue. Brodia is red. Elusia is green. Solm is yellow. As you can see, all of the ruling monarchs wear these colors prominently

Of the Firenese characters, Most of them don't have blue in their color schemes. Alfred is the only one to distinctly have blue has his main color. While Chloé has blue hair, she doesn't wear blue and Jean's dark blue accentuates his green more than standing out

Their blues are balanced out compared to how boldly Alfred wear his

Even Céline doesn't wear blue, which makes sense with her character. There was a time when she thought she would be queen instead of Alfred, but when he recovered, she shifted focus towards supporting him instead. Her lack of blue can represent how she has chosen not to challenge his role

He's the one who holds Firene's pride. He's the one who wears Firene's blue the most. She doesn't wear blue to avoid taking any part of that pride for herself

Notably, while the retainers mostly lack blue, they still wear colors that compliment their royals. Boucheron and Etie wear shades of orange and green that compliment Alfred's blue and yellow. Meanwhile, Chloé and Louis both wear greens and golds that accentuate Céline's yellow and light green. I think that shows how they're not loyal to them out of fealty, but because of who they are as individuals. They're fighting for their friend, not their liege

Here's where things get interesting. All of the Brodians have prominent reds in their designs. Considering that Brodia is a military kingdom, it would make sense for it to also be the most patriotic. To have a consistent military presence, they would need more citizens dedicated to Brodia and what it stands for. Hence why more people are showing wearing the national color

The most red characters are Diamant and Lapis. While Diamant wears red as crown prince, Lapis may wear red as overcompensation. Lapis feels like she doesn't belong with the upper crust of Brodia. She's just a country girl and fears their judgement. Wearing her loyalty can be her way of trying to fit in

The least red characters are Yunaka and Citrinne. Yunaka's only source of red is her hair, but nothing else. This makes sense because while a part of her will always be from Brodia, she's not loyal to it and always goes as far away from it as possible in her ending

Citrinne, on the other hand, restricts her red to jewels and trinkets. Unlike Lapis who may be overcompensating, Citrinne may be avoiding red out of insecurity. Her main grievance is that she's afraid of bringing down Diamant and Alcryst. The lack of red despite her love for Brodia could represent how she feels unworthy to carry Brodia's honor. She still chooses to wear it out of love but won't champion it

Elusia, in direct contrast to Brodia, has almost no green characters

Only Goldmary features green in her design, but it's just very small details in an otherwise yellow outfit. Kagetsu, and Rosado are not Elusian natives. I don't know if Zelkov is. Anna is Anna...

Ivy and Hortensia, despite being Elusian royals, neither wears green. More significantly, they wear colors that directly contrast it. Reds and pinks are the opposite of green on the color wheel. This represents how they ultimately turn against the current-day Elusia

Aside from Anna, all of the Elusians have to defect from their homeland and they don't bring that green with them. Their loyalty eventually came to second to their morality. When surrounded by green Elusian NPCs in combat, their lack of green can show that they're different from the standard soldiers and lack the same kind of loyalty they have

Solm is unique in the sense that all of them have yellow or gold, but only as accent colors

Timerra, Fogado, and Seadall have noticeable yellows and golds. Merrin and Bunet are blond and have fitting accessories. Pandreo and Panette have gold eyes, though only Pandreo wears gold details in his outfit and those are easy to miss. (Although, Panette's orange jewels could look yellow depending on the lighting)

The fact that all of them have at least one thing that holds Solm's yellow, but don't show them aggressively fits how everyone has a deep love for Solm, but none of them have the same patriotism that is standard in Brodia

Everyone is their own person with personal goals and passions unique to them, but their love for the queendom is always there even if they're not acknowledging it at that specific time

Again, a lot of this could have easily been coincidences. It's not like I was on the development team. I don't know what their thought processes were. But either way, the color choices ended up being very fitting for all the characters regarding how much or how little of the national colors they wore in their designs

Worry not, I wasn't planning on keeping the colors the same anyways, else it wouldn't be shattered glass.

Because its meant to be an alternate ending to the official movie, the original colors would of course still be there (Orion is red and blue, Megs is silver-black kind of mix), but over time the colors would be obviously different.

For Orion, when he became Optimus, he still had his red-blue colors, but after a while of becoming a Prime and ruling over Iacon, he had his colors changed to more darker and purplish tones, mainly darker ones of Alpha Trion's colors, who was known as the wisest Prime and was also the one who gave the group their cogs. His main reason would be to just change the blue color to make him hold no connection to 'sentinel' in anyway, at least in physical form. For now, I think he'd adopt most of his sg colors, (not the green, I definitely want that changed bc it looks so weird on him).

For Megatron, it'd be a little different. He'd have the same colors as his original Megatron form, the same silver-grey, however, a small detail would be he has a purple sheen (shine? the light that gets illuminated on the frame?? idk) as a small homage to the fact that he carries Megatronus's cog inside him, who was purple.

And for the eyes too! The eyes are also different. Orion wouldn't have red eyes, nor would megatron have blue eyes, that feels too cliche.

Instead, Megatron would keep his golden-amber eyes, to show he is still D-16 to some degree, though ofc they would change color to darker hues of orange and red whenever he got angry. Optimus, on the other hand, would have purple eyes, to show his 'corruption' affecting him to the point he doesn't see any wrong in some of his actions to control Iacon.

how do you choose color schemes for your art cos they're always so good, also i looove your horror magical girls <3

<3 receiving this ask made me SO excited i love talking about processes and techniques. anon i hope you enjoy the essay

note: for anyone wondering how i get the different color strokes in my art, that's color jitter! I can answer a different question on that, but it's just a brush setting that changes the color for each stroke. This answers how I choose the base colors :)

GENERAL RULES

I think the first thing to know about my process is that I'm weirdly strict with the colors I use? I see people who color pick and wiggle the color around a bit each time and it's really cool! But my brain doesn't like me doing that, so it makes most of my color palettes a pretty closed ecosystem.

As a overview, I have 3-4 "types" of colors with their own color gradients. Be aware of tone! Don't make the types of colors the same tone. Additional colors are made from combining the types. I use 25-75% opacity for new colors instead of blending them.

This is a good example of the closed ecosystem concept:

My 3 types of color are brown, green, and pink. The circles of colors are the ones I manually picked from the color wheel. The rectangular blocks of color are the new, in-between colors.

Something to note is that my new colors aren't 25% opacity, then 50% opacity, then 75% opacity. I draw a rectangular strip of the base color and draw over it with a 25% opacity brush. Then, I draw over half of that again with the 25% opacity brush. I keep doing this until I'm satisfied with my colors.

This character is a dryad and I wanted to add more interest to the bark skin, so I used the pink for some highlights. The brown and pink are both warm colors and it made the most sense to use them together. This is how it looks without the pink accent:

It ties the brown and pink together pretty nicely, right? I usually do this because I don't really like having two types of colors that are very similar in hue. If I have a pink-red color, then all pink-reds in the piece should be a color from its gradient (or a new color made from it). This makes sure all colors in the piece have a distinct relationship to each other.

(If I'm drawing something that's predominantly one or two hues, the threshold for merging colors is higher)

If that's not the case, then I prefer to manually include a gradient relationship. This particular instance was a little weird, where the brown seems more red than it is. It's actually an orange, but because I never used a medium or light toned variant of the color it just seems red. Changing its hue to pink would be pretty noticeable, so I chose to use the gradient method here.

As a rule of thumb, there are usually at least 3 types of colors: skin, hair, and clothing base colors. Skin and hair are generally unique, but not always.

CHOOSING GRADIENT/SHADING COLORS

This might change in the future (i want to experiment), but most of the time* when choosing my shading colors I move counterclockwise from lightest to darkest.

I originally started doing this because I use the same color for skin shading as the blush, which was tinted red. In general, this works pretty well because when moving counterclockwise from yellow the average tone of the color decreases. Purple has the darkest tone, so red/blue/purple are often my darkest colors.

*There are exceptions to this, particularly when I'm using green or blue-green. If that's the case, then I do the same thing but clockwise. Purple is still my darkest value.

It's a personal preference, but I very rarely use a yellow as the light color in a shading gradient moving towards green. You'll usually see me use yellow and then move towards orange/red OR use a yellowish green and move towards blue/purple. I'm not the biggest fan of yellow-green and use it extremely sparingly. Consequentially, this does pretty distinctly separate my warm and cool colors. It's not intentional lol

HUE RELATIONSHIPS

To be honest, I usually have two types of color schemes: Boldly different colors or similar colors with a bold accent.

If anyone has seem my art then they know i LOVE a good contrasting color scheme. I know there's actual contrasting colors-- yellow-purple, orange-blue, red-green-- but in this context I'll be using "contrasting color" to refer to the actual contrasting color and it's immediate neighbors. For example, red and blue would be contrasting in this context. Red and purple would not.

The reason I want to make this definition is because I think that you can get the same visual impact of actual contrasting colors as long as a color is the opposite mood (warm/cool) AND not next to the base color. Using the same example, red would be a warm color with green as its actual contrasting color. Yellow is also warm, so we can't use that despite it being green's neighbor. Blue works. Purple is red's neighbor, so we can't use that despite it being a cool color.

Here's some examples of color schemes with really prominent contrasting colors:

For pink/green

As for the other type of color scheme, it's 2 or 3 neighboring colors and a contrasting color (which is usually very saturated)

In some cases, the "contrasting color" is just a very light grey/white

In both cases, you just need a color that pops from the rest! Because my color palette is so limited, this accent color ends up being used for jewelry, trimmings, embroidery, etc. It helps tie everything together.

FINAL NOTES

I can (and will!) break the rules established here. I experiment, I make the objectively bad decision, I want to try other things. That's art. If you find something here that's interesting, try it out! Make it your own! (maybe tag or dm me, id love to see it)

"how... how could i... how could i let th-this..." he muttered as he choked back tears. you were confused, what was spider man doing to a total stranger like you, reaching his hand out and weeping over a soul he never met before. "spider man... it's okay... just--please--lock... that criminal... up." you made out with a small smile and a wheezing cough that followed afterwards.

spider man shook his head. "no... no, no, no!" he shouted, which made you gasp. "i'm... i'm sorry... i couldn't... first, uncle ben, and now..." he cried out as he started to weep under his mask. with the last bit of strength you had, you shushed spider man, reaching your hand out for his that caressed your cheek. "spider man... please don't cry... over a--a stranger..." you whispered as he held your hand tightly, and soon... you were gone.

and peter... felt like he had died along with you. words can never begin to describe the sorrow and anguish he felt when he saw you there in that alleyway as he was chasing down that criminal, he could never imagine just how painful it was for you, and he feels like all the punishments in the world were never enough to absolve him for the sin of not being around long enough for you.

for not being able to save you when he could've done something.

"why... why them? why not me?" was all he could cry out to the skies above as he took off his mask and wept, still holding your cold hand in his own, as your lifeless body beat no more for the man you loved and held dearly in your, now pierced and unbeating, heart.

I would like a season based on a combination of gemstones and popular hobbies like arts, sports, and science. It can have a moral theme of "finding your inner sparkle, your one true talent."

I've always thought that season-based characters (spring, summer, etc.) were really fun, with lots of possibilities as far as power and design go! But it would be harder to have a sixth ranger, and we've just had a 4+1 season, so I'm not too hopeful… I guess I'd like a story around art (like, each of the girl represent a certain form of creativity?) We've had lots of cures who were artist of some kind, but their interests are rarely reflected by their cure powers!

Hopefully there'll be more than one villain active at the same time, Hirogaru Sky was honestly kind of disappointing in that regard (it does not help that the first villain's debut came with a fart joke).

I'm fine with another pink, yellow and blue Cures, but please, at least try to make them different by using different shades of said colors. There are so many, don't settle for the most basic color palette.

If it doesn't happen, I could always make fancures instead.

I really want a cure who becomes an engineer of some kind in the epilogue. Specifically a girl becoming an engineer

I am sure it will not be what I want XD but precure prove me wrong this year!

I would love unique flower motifs for each cure. All of the possibilities!

Mythology would also be a fun theme, but the Tropical team had a phoenix and so did Cure Wing, so they would probably try to space that out.

The cures' designs would be based on wild cats and domestic cat breeds: maine coon, norwegian forest cats (e.g cure forrêt), serval, jaguar. There would be a cat goddess (who could possibly also be a precure)!

Male Cure, Twins as cures, a disabled cure, a chubby cure, and a cure of color (like Elena)

I think it'd be neat to have the main trio be required to transform together as a call-back to Black/White, Bloom/Egret, Melody/Rhythm, Miracle/Magical, and Macherie/Amour, plus to keep celebrating 20 years of Precure

Random list of elements that (I think) haven't been done that much in a precure season: 1) Have cures be siblings/give a significant role to a cure's sibling. 2) Have characters actually be in a romance! I know precure has a young demographic, so romance isn't exactly important, but it's a bit tiresome how many precure romances tend to be unresolved crushes that are dragged throughout the season! I don't care if it's girl/girl, girl/boy or boy/boy, it would just be nice to see characters confess to each other and have their relationship build from there throughout the story. 3) I know there have been debates on relationships between the cures and the villains, how redeemable the villains are, how much the cures should be concerned about them, etc., but I'd like Toei to play on that dynamic more. Maybe a villain questioning their allegiance, or even turning out to be a mole for the good guys! Or on the opposite side, a cure joining the bad guys willingly, whether misguidedly or to become a mole themselves! 4) Fun stuff with the mascots! The mascots are a family! A mascot is a family member of a cure (don't ask me how that works!) Secretely-a-villain mascot! Mascot who is reluctant in their role and a bit cranky! 5) Families and non-magical friends being a relevant part of the cures' life. To be fair, it has been done several times, but it's always nice to see. 6) Boarding school!

Guess what time it is, kids? Yet again, it's wild Welcome Home speculation time, but this time is a little different because we're talking about color theory.

Now, I don't mean "red means sex and blue is calming" marketing "color theory" that made children's hospitals a meme, I mean actual artistic color theory. You know, with the funny wheel? We're talking about that.

Color is very important to Welcome Home. It makes sense, as it's a very colorful project! But I'm thinking about it specifically in terms of coding character relationships.

Characters with matching colors in their designs have relationships codified in their roles in the in-universe show. Wally and Barnaby have the same color scheme of all primaries with only slight deviation, and they're written to be the bestest buds in the whole wide world. Frank and Julie both wear yellow bow ties and are similarly friendly, implied to be made specifically to be a perfect comedic pair.

But speaking of Frank, he's the center of a point I want to touch on: each character's assigned color and its complement, and what that might mean in the story going forward. If you didn't notice before, each character has a specific color assigned to them. This is used for their name on their bio as well as in the gifs for each character that you see on the links page.

Frank's color is yellow. Yellow's complement on the color wheel is purple. Purple is Eddie's color. We know that in the future, Frank and Eddie will develop a romantic relationship in some capacity that will be extremely important to the plot.

So, extrapolating this idea, I theorize that the relationships between characters represented by complementary colors in particular will be absolutely vital to the story in one way or another (relationships of all sorts, I mean, not necessarily in the romantic sense).

So then, besides Frank and Eddie, which relationships does that entail?

Firstly, with blue being opposite orange, that means Barnaby and Sally's relationship might hold some significance down the line. It makes sense to me, as they're both performers, though they often don't see eye-to-eye. I can see them becoming allies after the horror shoe drops because with Wally right at the center of it, Barnaby might not know where else to turn.

These last two sets are interesting as one complementary set is just a lighter shade of the other. I don't know if that signifies anything, but it is notable! Wally is red and Julie is pink, meanwhile Howdy is a dark, slightly bluish green and Poppy is a light green. So that means the complementary pairs go Wally–Howdy and Julie–Poppy (since the lights would go with the lights and the darks go with the darks).

Wally and Howdy...... oh, you guys already know how I feel about Wally and Howdy. I think that they're gonna be in kahoots to some capacity, considering the apple thing they've both got going on and points I've discussed elsewhere. This just adds fuel to my fire.

Now Poppy and Julie...... they're interesting. Julie has this very outgoing nature that I think could help bring Poppy out of her eggshell, so to speak, but I'm not sure how that might factor into the horror story. Unless my own personal view that characters growing beyond their initial roles is going to be a catalyst for the scary stuff is right, then perhaps her helping Poppy might set off a series of events she can't control.....

And that's all. I don't really have a conclusion, but I hope you thought that was neat, at least.

Each canvas has one color theme: red, pink, purple, blue, teal, green, yellow and orange. I've prepared some palettes for you to use! You can go full monochrome for a nice challenge, but you can also use other colors as long as the main color scheme of the drawing follows the respective color of the canvas! Favorite to least favorite schools?

OOOOOO A QUESTION so okay this is an interesting one for me because not only are my faves tied for first place BUT I have such a limited knowledge on the schools I don't play as often so the list is gonna be super wonky HSLABDIRKE BUT HERE, LET'S PUT IT INTO WORDS:

Most favorite school(s): Storm/Death

So we all know I love Storm and it's for No Reason. Like I can't even say it's because of the game mechanics or whatever I just love Storm and there's no reason why. Even as a kid I immediately knew that I wanted to be the Purple Lightning Bolt School before I even took the book of secrets test. Like I swear I kin Storm but like. Kin-lite if that makes sense. Like I'm NOT Storm itself but IDKKKK HOW TO EXPLAIN IT I love everything about Storm; the aesthetics and the color scheme and the lore behind it, it all just SPEAKS TO ME so yeah I never grew up. Sjsldjdi

But like narratively? Lore-wise Death has to be my favorite because not only is there so much that goes into the Magic itself but like so many important and well-lived characters are Necromancers. And in my PERSONAL opinion some of the most compelling tales come from Necromancers alone because OF WHAT THEY GO THROUGH SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE THEY ARE NECROMANCERS. Like yeah I relate to that shit and honestly? The game says that the three Primordial forces are the most powerful magic but I feel like Death (along with Life and Balance of the main schools) is one of, if not the most powerful. Also because dead stuff and goth girls are my two most favorite things in the world so

Next Favorite School: Myth

Actually if I, myself, was the young wizard instead of my homunculus puppet I think I prooobably would be Myth. Like I think that's just literally who I am and even though I don't think my aesthetic lines up with Trolls and Cyclopes that much I just literally feel in my heart I'm just so...... (gestures towards myself) that I'm quite fit to be a Myth wizard. Lore reasons only. Like the "imaginative" Wizards is so mecore. I like Myth a lot but it's definitely below Storm and Death

The school after that: Balance

This time it's a mix between aesthetic and lore a lil bit. I like the fact that Balance doesn't even really seem to be a unique Magic that it's its own thing but rather a bit of each and every existing school (including the Astrals and Shadow) that it just became something entirely new and on its own???? Like it's familiar in the sense that you can see it in other Magic schools but there's still something in the core of Balance that makes it Balance. If that.... even begins to make any sense (I'm sorry my vocabulary is fucking shit. I know no words to describe things well). Also this is just my personal headcanon that Balance is one of the hardest Magic schools to master because it's so complicated. Like Balance in the Spiral is like Physics or Chemistry in our world

So this is where I start to fall out of groove with the other magic schools because I don't know shit about them so I'm gonna have to just rank them off vibes alone at this point:

The next favorite school: Fire

I was a fire wizard like years and years and years ago before I listened to my autism and went with Storm and honestly Fire fucks!!!! It's a cool school and idk how popular it is in terms of game mechanics (I think Ice and Life and Balance is most popular I think? idk I don't play the game) but I've always thought Fire was just super pretty to look at during battle. The color scheme may be a bit basic (red and orange for fire mhm) but it still works and honestly???? Personal headcanons that Fire wizards are actually one of the most mellow-headed wizards out of all the schools (commonly mistaken with Ice wizards; remember kids "Calm" doesn't equal "Aloofness") and that Pyromancers are typically daycare teachers or people who are normally in charge of/care for the youth

Some of y'all are gonna hate me for this but I can't really put Life or Ice above or below each other because I just don't really think about either of them that much HALSEHRKSH: LISTEN I DONT HATE EITHER OF THESE SCHOOLS, they just don't really....... stand out to me that much and my life and ice wizards aren't that far enough along yet where I can spot a significant difference between those schools and the ones I actually do play. Aesthetically wise yeah they're pretty!!! And then that's it DUDJSJSO I APOLOGIZE TO MY LIFE AND ICE MUTUALS/FOLLOWERS

(I assume anon meant like, the schools you start out with and not the schools you learn about later so I left out Shadow and the Astrals but if I had to put them somewhere on this list Shadow would definitely be right under Storm and Death, Moon would be below that, Star would be after Fire and Sun would be just kinda hanging out on the outside somewhere)

I meant to post these yesterday (between the anniversaries of ZTD's Japanese & NA/EU releases), but Eric was giving me trouble still. D-Team honestly has the least offensive designs, so I'll save them for another time. Under the cut is all my commentary on them, including more thought process stuff.

Carlos:

Square-ish design language

The concept art mentioned specifically his broad shoulders, so I tried to make them a little broader than I would on average, though I think I tend towards drawing my characters a little broad-shouldered naturally.

varsity jacket instead of button-down, emphasize "jock" attributes

Canon Carlos kind of looks like a surfer dude. I still wanted to make him look sporty, but in a different way.

kept axe on breast pocket

I think it was a good move for the team to change this one. I like the symbol.

kept burn scarring

I feel as though the burn scarring is less likely to be from his job and more likely to be from when he saved Maria, since he wouldn't have been wearing gear at that time. But I liked the idea, so I kept it.

Junpei:

giving him the emo mullet he deserves

I think with his general self-neglect the fact that his hair is shorter in ZTD than it is in 999 is wild.

I did keep his hair being a purple-black bc I like that :)

put a design on his shirt to make it less plain, so even if you do rob him of his leather jacket he doesn't look boring

Akane:

in the actual game her dress is really close to her skin tone so it blends in. it's still close but not as bad. and it being a turtleneck mitigates those issues mostly

she's wearing platform boots now

I also gave her the River Patented Loose Strand of Hair because I can't draw an Akane without it

both Junpei and Akane:

so I decided to put both of them on the same canvas and work on them in tandem because I like the light/dark contrast they have going on in ZTD as well as the detail that in 999 Akane is purple and Junpei is red & blue

if you look at Junpei the red & blue is still there, just darker and duller

Sean:

honestly I really like the components of his design individually but the desaturation of the colors makes him not interesting to look at past the helmet

the stripes on his shirt were originally blue I think but they're orange here so that the sneakers look less out of place

Eric:

was REALLY hard to work with

like, I have four different versions of this saved, that are all the same base but slightly different

I really liked the note on his concept art where the artist wanted to make his shoulders asymmetric, and wanted to take that asymmetry idea to the next level

I made him blue to contrast with Mira's red

I also wanted to keep the "just some guy" energy, so he is still a Guy In a Shirt, but executed differently and with more color

the orange is because his canon color scheme includes it

I made this chart for myself for future rainbow themed series purposes (making choosing characters easier), and made a few surprising observations I decided I wanted to share because why not;

(Side note; the black row is for characters I mostly associate with black-white color schemes, or primarily black or white. Red includes pinks and magentas too.)

I have a LOT more green-themed characters/characters I associate with the color than I thought. Green is typically kind of my least favorite color group (mainly I don't like wearing it myself) so this is surprising?

I have a couple of characters I forgot are supposed to be in "active use" I.E Issui (the green kappa, second last on the bottom of the green column) and Yuuki (the white catboy at the end of black row)

Some characters were incredibly difficult to place, I really had to think outside their 'main' design itself sometimes to choose which category they belong. (Example; Alexander is orange despite his dark purplish mafia clothes, because his own personal coat is orange toned and he tends to wear earthy colors when choosing himself)

Some designs I thought I disliked, I probably just need to draw them more, or adjust them a tiny bit; they weren't as bad as I recalled lol (such as Max at the bottom of the orange row)

I also placed them in order from my most favorite to my least most favorite with each column, and the only surprise choice was Kuromoya for Indigo as the favorite. I initially thought it'd be Iris (second favorite) but ultimately I like Kuromoya a tiny bit more lol

(lot of the bottom ones are at the bottom purely because I've only recently made them/brought them back so the emotional connection isn't there as strongly yet)

I THINK this is all my active-use ones, but I could've forgotten someone. I also didn't include my friend's characters.

Slightly different topic. When it comes to color schemes of course I like my sona's main colors: Blue, Black, and Orange in that order. Orange I never have by itself, I always want it accented to blue. Blue is mandatory unless it's purely black. Those are the identifying colors for me though. Occasionally I'll use Blue/Red/Black in games if the other scheme isn't available or doesn't look as nice (warframe). It is rare for game shaders to screw up red or blue. Not to mention I see Red as my character canon's demon mode color.

For other colors. I appreciate Red as a color scheme. I particularly enjoy monochromatic red with red being accented but in a bloody looking way, often with black or white as the main color. There are plenty of furry pictures that do that, and all the better with claws or bloody looking paws as I've seen a fursuiter use.

Pink I appreciate very much. Even before Choskey I grew to appreciate it more and more, first as a close to flesh color thing, so I saw it as sexy. Later because of the transgender thing, because it's cute, and because I deeply appreciate the femboy aesthetic. Oh and the crush on Enternode way back when helped a bit. Overall it is a very cute color to splash or main. I never use it personally except as an accent. Even Azu uses red and black as her main colors. But I appreciate it a lot even if not as a self identifying color.

The colors I seem to use the least are green, purple, and yellow. Yellow is close enough to orange sometimes that if I look at furry art I'll almost see it as self-identifying if used as an eye or accent color, in place of orange. Umbreon for example. Pokemon I tend to lean towards the yellow pokemon when it comes to favorites, like Jolteon and particularly Zeraora. I also see fire and lightning as my personal elements. That said I rarely use yellow directly for anything and for candy flavors and such like starburst I definitely don't like yellow. Any time yellow could be used, I find orange or red orange would be better suited and look nicer. For example the version of Indie Assault me and eltrotraw worked on you could tell whose build was whose by if the clock stage lighting was yellow or orangeish

Green I used to appreciate to some small degree, since Morgan and Shadetail from my roleplay days had it as their self-identifying colors. Shadetail too closely idolized Lorelei from Black Tapestries web comic by Jaakal, and used it as an eye color. Morgan was deeply connected to her irish blood, so she really liked green, and foresty colors in general. Green and Red. I can respect it as a favorite color but it is definitely not one I tend to use in anything. I never seem to find a time I would use it over any other color except when I'm playing around with my google lights.

Purple is Vera's color if I remember correctly. Purple I've never personally found much use for. I generally never use it even as a smart light color. I find it has the least viable use cases when it comes to personal preference. It is the color of mystery and according to my sister it's not even a real color. Just a color our mind managed to make-up when trying to decipher a wave length it can't actually see. It was also Sothe's color. Not much else to it really. I just don't really care for it. It's not ugly at least. I mean if you made a tron light cycle, just about all these colors mentioned so far would work, but I would be the least likely to use it over anything else.

The ugly colors are generally the browner colors. So off-green that's more muddy, green yellow, darker shades of orange or gold, tend to be pretty unappealing. Cyan/Torqoise I also find a bit weird but I'll take it over the other options.

Blue however is definitely my color. The "cool" color schemes I find very calming or very... cool. Very personally identifiable. Very comforting. I find blue shadings to be generally satisfying and hard to screw up. So in particular the mmd world I'm checking out MR MMD World, the blue fish stage, and the water stage are very solid for me and they really complement my blue avatar very well. It looks so nice and it reminds me why I like blue so damn much and why I consider it deeply ingrained into my very soul. My mind and body just deeply appreciates it on a level no other color can scratch and sees the color itself as a part of me. So when I see blue accented or blue main avatars or sonas in furry art, I tend to be quite receptive of them. From my perspective sometimes I question why others could possibly feel any differently, even though I know the world doesn't quite work that way. Anyway I like it, and the blue orange black thing always comes to mind whenever I see anything with a matching color scheme. I "relate" on a semi-personal level.

Orange I like flames, so it's solid enough when mixed with other adjacent colors. I generally don't use straight up orange for anything though, just strictly accent. The flame aspect of orange is why I like to splash it so much. Fire is also pretty cool, or pretty hot for me.

Black is simply preferable to white. I like my dark color scheme browser. It reminds me of the default color scheme my rp forum had, and it's easier on the eyes when using my monitor at night. Black is comforting too. Even though it is dark, darkness hides me, darkness lets me see others when they can't see me. So darkness is actually a good thing for me. I tend to wait when it comes to turning on lights and stuff, and occasionally I used to not turn them on at all and just sit in the dark, though it's not socially acceptable with room mates. And when it comes to shirts, I don't see why I'd wear anything that doesn't have black as the main color. And sona wise it makes a solid main fur color as well. It goes with anything just about so it's a very good filler color overall. It's also darker/eviler than white thematically, so that already makes it cooler than white. Dark magic and demons ftw. Black cat or black wolf it is definitely a a part of me as well. Any time I can customize my colors I'll always try to prioritize my colors first over anything else.

But overall blue seems to be my most deeply personal comfort color.

Ride Kamens Speculations - The Belts

So. We've all heard about Ride Kamens at this point, right? Over the course of the last few weeks, five riders (based on 1, Den-O Sword Form/Momotaros, W, Jin, and Woz) have been revealed as characters within the game game... and recently, a photo of the belts for the remaining Riders yet to be revealed has been found.

Despite the looming prospect that I will be proven instantly wrong in the next few days (since they're revealing a few more Riders from the Justice Ride faction), I've decided to go ahead and attempt to figure out just which Riders will be influenced/featured, via these Belts!

The funny belts in question:

So, a few things for this,

- I've seen speculation that the rest of the Taros will be featured as Riders, but considering that every Rider we have so far is from a different series, I'm going to assume that the rest of these Riders will as well.

- Due to the presence of Jin and Woz as part of the influences for the current line-up, I have to assume that these won't all be main Riders, and thus I have to be creative in my thinking.

- I'm going to sort these by tiers of how good I think my guess is. Said tiers are Definitely In Here, Educated Guess, and Fuck Idk. I'm a master at naming things, as you can tell. Anyways, onto the list...

Definitely In Here

- Orange Belt: Gaim. Outside of the fact that we see a very Gaim-shaped silhouette in the "character lineup" image, this shade of orange can belong to only one person... and alas, it probably isn't gonna be Ghost.

- Gold + Green Belt: Beast. Like with Gaim, I doubt that there's another rider with colors like that. Especially since some sort of lion/catboy would do numbers for the audience the game is trying to attract.

- Yellow + Grey...ish Belt: Espada. I wanted to say Baron, but there's only one Rider with that shade of their banana yellow in their suit. Plus, they probably want at least one other Reiwa representative outside of Hayao.

- Magenta + Neon Blue: Kabuto. Grandmother said this: Tendou Shouji is the sexiest fucker alive and there's no way that these aren't his colors. Plus one of the guys in Slam Days does the☝️

- White + Purple: Chaser. The best part of Drive was Chase, and like. These are his suit colors. I know women like him so this one feels like a slam dunk.

Educated Guess

- Purple + Yellow: Ouja. If it's not gonna be Horobi, considering we already got Jin, then everyone's favorite mud eating psycho killer is the next biggest Purple Rider. Unless it's Michinaga. God I hope not.

- Gold + Red: Agito... maybe. As much as I'd like to be fully confident in this one, another Belt on here has me conflicted, so I'm putting this one down here. Plus, Chalice has the same sorta color scheme.

- Dark Blue + Pink: Hibiki. It might be someone else (mainly because I have no idea of anything Hibiki related), but I don't really know who it would be. The weird blueish purple is... distinct to say the least.

- Blue + Red: Blade. I've heard that the possibility of a Blade character would be in here (see above), but I feel like if anyone would be here, it'd be regular Blade. That being said, I feel like this would be G3 colors, as wild as that sounds, so I'm kinda on the fence.

Fuck Idk

- Light Blue + Red: Meteor. These are really generic colors to put on a belt, and due to the wide range of Blue Riders With Red On Them, I can't narrow down who it would be. The colors made me think of Meteor's helmet, but that's tenuous at best. My second choices were either Specter or Revi, but that's baseless speculation.

- White and... slightly less White (Tan?): Black. As strange as it sounds, the fact remains that if we're getting one more Showa representative outside of Saigo, it's either Black or #2... and this belt maybe fits Black? I honestly have no clue who this would be, mainly due to the stunning lack of discernable colors. Is any other Rider suit colored white? Someone comment it there is because I'm stumped on this one.

I hope this sparks some sort of discussion amongst fellow Ride Kamens Enthusiasts™ (all six of us), and feel free to chime in with your own guesses in the notes!

Oh and for context I put my user flair in the Tumblr subreddit as "don't ask me about my favorite Undertale character" so when people inevitably brought it up I made a long-ass comment explaining why I love Asgore (idk if essay is the right word though English is confusing)

Essay 1:

Asgore is such a fucking cool dude, and I absolutely adore him. He's a great father, who loves and supports his children, a spectacular king, that did everything in his power to balance his own morals and keeping of hope for his kingdom, and seemed to be a great husband, as he and Toriel complemented eachother very well and were really affectionate, and their separation only happened due ti circumstancesout of their control.

I also love the way he's set up in Undertale, with the buildup of expectations of Toriel and Undyne warning about him initially, only for Papyrus and later Undyne again to disprove those allegations by talking about how he really is!

His battle is really well-done, with challenging attack patterns and a great and iconic moment right at the start, a really off-putting challenge if you're on Pacifist, and simple, but interesting ways of reducing challenge if necessary with the Pie and Talking while LV1; not to mention, his post-battle dialogue and the results of sparing him in certain scenarios are absolutely devastating to watch, whether that be for Flowey to kill him or for him to do it himself.

But wait! I've been almost exclusively talking about Undertale! He's also in Deltarune and that's where half of my love for him came from!

In Deltarune, he is absolutely miserable, after a mysterious divorce and removal from post of chief of police, but still manages to show how much he loves Kris by respecting their dislike for physical touch, is a sweetheart that is almost going homeless due to how much he expresses his love for people, as he gives flowers away instead of selling them, manages to emotionally support Rudy more than his own wife, and is trying to reconnect with his children despite the issues with the divorce. All in all, a great guy who did not deserve suffering as much as he did.

Also I think he is kinda hot but that's beside the point

Essay 2:

RANT START!

Asgore! I love most aspects of his writing and character design, with only a single aspect of his Deltarune characterization annoying me for a purely out of universe reason.

His character design is really interesting for a few reasons, mainly the color scheme and general anatomy; the goat-like anatomy, along with the trident, give him the silllhouette of a demon, fitting with the initial traits given by Toriel, while simultaneously showing that he is not actually antagonistic by giving him the appearance of a herbivore and a neat little flower detail on the trident. His color scheme is comprised of gold and purple, two colors heeavily associated with royalty, white, associated with good and a good neutral color to balance the palette out, and red, associated with blood and death (and other stuff but come on it's on his trident). Given what the player has seen so far, these colors will most likely lead them to relate Asgore to Toriel, Flowey and Alphys, with the first two being his family members and the third one being a bit of a clue on Flowey's origins and nature, which is like the biggest mystery in the game when you first fight him.

His fight is pretty good, basically being Toriel But Hard with the added element of the trident being a final test on orange/blue attack mechanics; actually having to hurt someone is a weird thing for many pacifist players, which can make the battle much more challenging, but it's balanced out by use of the Pie, which is hinted at in New Home, and proper ACTing, which also serves as a bit of a lore tidbit by showing players that Asgore is aware of resets, though what exactly that means hasn't been made clear by anyone so idk what to say about it.

His buildup along the game is really well done, with Toriel, Papyrus, Undyne and Alphys all offering different views on him, from a total hottie to an absolute pushover to a menacing murderer to a goofball with a big heart, which makes it so that people have completely different views on him upon reaching the throne room, and can feel really conflicted about killing him to escape. New Home's placement also helps to muddy the waters a bit, by showing what his family life was like and giving glimpses of his personality with things such as the "Mr. Dad Guy" sweater and the pies in the garbage can.

His actual personality is really cute too, he absolutely loves and cares for his children, he puts a ton of effort into making sure his kingdom isn't losing hope, and he's generally a very selfless guy to the point of sacrificing his mental and physical health for the sake of the kingdom.

The only things I dislike about him are the possible cheating in Deltarune, though that's unconfirmed and doesn't seem likely at all [edit: poly relationships seem completely acceptable in the DR world considering some Addison quotes so this is most likely not an issue], and the fact that he's a cop (🤢) there, which I can absolutely overlook as the police force's characterization in general seems to be completely disconnected from its real life issues.

Essay 3 (this one is a full-on conversation so I'll add some parts of the other person's comments. Their text will be in italics):

Just because a character did bad things doesn't mean they're a bad person and doesn't mean I'm a bad person for liking them.

"As someone who has never undertaled personally, can I ask you about your favourite undertale character?"

Yup! As my comment may have suggested, he's a bit controversial in the fandom due to Doing Bad Things, so you probably haven't heard a lot about him, but Asgore is an absolutely wonderfully written character and I love him dearly

He's the king of the Underground, who has lived through the war of the humans and monsters, been sealed in the Underground, and lived through several hundred years since. While in there, he and Toriel had a child, Asriel, and another fell in, that being Chara. They lived with Asriel for a while, became his best friend, and gave hope for the Monsters, until disaster struck. Chara died, and gave their Soul to Asriel, so that he would go to surface, get 6 more Souls, shatter the barrier, and wipe humanity out. Asriel, knowing that murdering the humans was not the best thing to do, got attacked by them, and didn't defend himself. He then returned to the Underground, collapsing and dying on the Throne Room, right in front of his parents. Asgore and Toriel had vastly different reactions to this, with the former declaring that he would kill six humans to gather their sould and destroy humanity, and the latter thinking that further violence would not solve anything, deciding to exile herself to the Ruins.

Thing is, he didn't want to kill anyone. He knows that another war would be awful, but decided to declare it anyway to get the Monsters' hope up because everyone was completely depressed after several hundred years of imprisonment and the two royal children dying on the same day, and he managed to keep it up for a very long time before the main character fell down. As such, he prioritized his people's wellbeing over his own morals, to the point where he killed six children just to give them hope. He knows that it's wrong, though, and worked with both Royal Scientists to manage to circumvent the issue, which kinda worked, as Asriel broke the barrier without killing a seventh human.

And that's why I like him so much! He's a truly selfless man, who did everything in his power to decrease the suffering of othewrs and ended up being the one to suffer the most because of it. That's also, I think, what is being done in Deltarune (Undertale's sequel), where instead of being the king of monsters he's the owner of a flower shop, which is almost going out of business because he can't bring himself to sell flowers instead of giving them away, and is trying to keep a healthy relationthip with his child despite being divorced and berated by Toriel. He's absolutely miserable, but tries to make sure no one else is.

There's like 5 more paragraphs of rant that I could make, but this comment is already long enough lol, sorry for rambling

Oh, sorry, I forgot to give that part of the context! Basically, there was a war between the humans and the monsters. The humans won, and sealed the monsters underground with a barrier that could only be broken with the power of seven human Souls. However, that's a massive amount of power, and a monster with even a single human Soul (which is enough to cross the barrier) would be the strongest being in the world, so if the monsters managed to destroy the barrier and had the intent of killing humanity they very much could.

And the killing six kids thing is the main issue. Because of the barrier, the only way for the monsters to reach humans is if someone falls into the Underground, and once there they can only exit after murdering either Asgore or Toriel because of their monster Souls, so six different children fell down, went through the Underground, and either were murdered before reaching Asgore or directly by him while trying to get his Soul. It's awful for both Asgore and Toriel because they have to relive the trauma they suffered from losing their children, and because Asgore does not really like to kill people and Toriel doesn't like for people who she tries to care about to die, however her perspective is much more prominent in the game because she's interacted with way more, so a lot of players had a massive amount of bias when first fighting Asgore, and didn't bother to learn who he is

Well, Toriel is met at the very start of the game, where she saves the player and takes care of them, and she's the first one to say anything about Asgore, in which she says he, and all other monsters, will mercilessly kill the player, and while that perspective is instantly disproved for all other monsters as soon as you leave The Ruins, as the first one that is met is pretty much instantly friendly, but the player doesn't get much time to directly interact with Asgore and get that disproven; It's only seen through other monsters' opinions of him and random objects in his home, none of which as more instantly trustworthy than Toriel's view so they can be easily dismissed.

It also doesn't help that he, at first glance, killed innocent children. Unlike Snake, who killed terrorists, and was clearly reluctant and regretful of the act, Asgore declared war on an entire race and killed kids of that race. Of course, he is regretful, but when the seemingly most reliable person on the entire Underground is his bitter ex who hates his guts it's hard to realize that

Bored so I'm stating my thoughts on every DRS swimsuit sprite

(Part 1: THH)

Makoto: it's like. Fine lol. Kind of generic but totally fits with his "totally average high school student" thing

Taka: Accurate. Next.

Byakuya: Torn between "this looks stupid" and "it's Byakuya we're talking about here, of course he'd wear something stupid and think it would make him look more refined ". Like this looks bad but it's absolutely in character

Mondo: Eh. Feels almost kinda young for him but I don't really have any better ideas and it does fit his color scheme well

Leon: Flaming hot cheetos vibes but I'll take it

Hifumi: Fitting but makes me even more mad that he's stylized Like That. All the other characters had plausible proportions I'm SURE you can do that for a fat character too. Either they all should be cartoony or none of em should be

Hiro: I guess I get what they were going for but this is too patterned and also not his color scheme at all. Maybe I'm just saying this bc I think orange and green basically never match but yeah

Chihiro: BEAUTIFUL AMAZING SHOWSTOPPING PERFECT. My favorite outfit so far. Dr may have utterly failed in basically every aspect of Chihiro's writing but they did not fail with this outfit she looks amazing

Sayaka: This looks dumb sorry. Idk what they were going for but like. Why. The top and bottom of her suit don't even match? (Admittedly her hair being draped over her shoulders weirdly like that is just for this sprite not all of them but still)

Kyoko. Like. Technically it's better than Sayaka's aesthetically in that at least it matches with itself and her hair ties (in most of the sprites at least. For some reason they're discolored in this only fullbody one.). Still. The thing about me is that I have trouble imagining Kyoko wearing literally any feminine clothing ever so I see this and my mind just goes "OOC" even though she literally also dresses fem in canon

Hina: Worst one yet. She's literally ultimate swimmer why would she wear this it's impractical and dumb. Also the color scheme is soo different from the normal desaturated red+white+blue she normally wears. The bandaid is an ok touch but that's the only good thing about this design

(I'm sorry Toko's expression is like that; this is the only close-to-fullbody DRS sprite on the wiki)

Toko and Syo (kind of the same outfit so I'll judge it together): I really like this one! Toko having a skirt thing so no one can see her tallymarks but Syo taking it off is a good touch. I wouldn't have thought of blue as her color but it actually really works (and reminds me of Komaru's uniform...)

Sakura: Cute! Tbh a bit more frilly/cutesy than I would have expected but she looks nice :)

Celeste: SECOND FAVE AFTER CHIHIRO I <3 IT. Generally Celeste's aesthetic fucks so hard (only tiiiiny criticism I have is that the lace on her suit would look nicer if it was matching in size with that on her headdress)

Junko: Why so plain??? Like it really doesn't seem to fit with the gyaru aesthetic at all (admittedly I don't know much about said fashion subculture though so I def could be wrong it just looks very different to my eye). Like I feel like this is what Hina should have worn it looks like smth actual swimmers would wear in a race

Mukuro: REAL LIXED FEELINGS HERE. On the one hand, this is very fitting for someone pretending to be the ultimate fashionista; you've perfectly captured that vibe. On the other hand, why should she have to pretend to be Junko in this context whyyy. (So like generally this aesthetic is good she's getting a good grade in Junko mimicry but the "Mukuro is butch" part of my brain is NOT a fan she shouldn't HAVE to wear that)

Monokuma: Sure lol. this is fine. Why do you need a swimsuit when you're normally naked

A critique of the magic knight captain's outfits because that's the kind of mood I'm in.

1. Charlotte

I've decided that she has the best outfit of anyone here.

She's got several colors going on, but most of them are neutral so It's ok

Blue and silver with gold accents isn't really a color scheme you can go wrong with

Could use a little more armor, but overall a rather practical look

Could stand to loose the helmet but overall not bad

10/10 something I would wear

2. Dorothy

I'm loving the energy of the pink in this one.

Honestly very pretty aesthetic

Not a lot going on, pretty much only pink w/ some black and white accents (There are two different shades of pink but that's ok because they're in separate pieces and nothing else is going on)

The green on her hat really helps make the pink less overwhelming, a great choice

Minus points because those shorts look a little bit like underwear and her boots should probably be black.

9/10 wouldn't wear it but I'd recommend a friend

3. The Vermilions:

It's pretty much the exact same outfit but Mereoleona wears it so much better.

The red and orange is kind of a bad combo, and I thought it was basic knowledge that redheads should avoid wearing red

The blue does work to cut this a bit though, so it's not as overwhelming as it could be

Kinda iffy on the pink sash. It really should match the cape by outfit laws, but I think that would put too much red in the entire thing

Fuegoleon you're pretty but that outfit really isn't doing it for you. Minus points for the lack of titty window. In the future show more skin. 6/10

Like I said, it's basically the same outfit, but Mereoleona wears it with a very different energy and manages to make it look good. I get pirate queen vibes. 8.5/10

Overall 7/10; I might wear elements of it.

4. Rill

The clothing needs a different style/cut but the colors are decent.

His cape doesn't class with his hair, and he's got the light colors well balanced with the dark

He looks like he's outgrown his pants though

They're a bit too short to be wearing without boots

And at least wear some socks to cover it up

Gonna give him the benefit of the doubt and say he hit a growth spirt and Walter hasn't had time to let out the hems

Shoes make me think of Tinker belle

6/10 I like the colors but he really needs different pants, and maybe shoes

5. Yami

Surprisingly not the worst but I am not without criticism.

He's got an aesthetic going that allows him to get away with a bit

As an outfit it's ok, but there's a distinct lack of professionalism going on

Sir are you really going to wear nothing but a tank top 24/7?

Also the over pant thingies make it look like he's wet himself

I like the creativity with the squad robe. No one else wears it like that

His outfit was better when he was with the Grey Deer

Can' figure out what's up with those boots

5/10. I'd never recommend wearing it but it's got a practicality to it.

My dude you're rich enough to afford a stylist.

We're not even talking about the hair at this point, there are so many things that need straightened out

The ocean/teal blue he's got going on does not work with the periwinkle.

Also what's up with the pant leg cut outs. I really fail to understand the practicality of them

I don't have a lot to say. It's pretty bland.

Very shapeless and fluffy

I'm honestly getting hot just looking at it

Aside from the buttons + gloves and squad robe, there's not much going on

I don't have many critiques of the squad robe. It's purple and yellow. Nothing too horrible.

5/10. Very generic and boring. Don't like at all but it's hard to come up with concrete bad things

They literally serve no purpose
