Arc System Works has announced Guilty Gear: Strive Season Pass 2 downloadable content character Asuka R#. He will launch on May 25 alongside the additional battle stage “Tir na nOg” and two Guilty Gear 25th anniversary color packs. The company also confirmed that a Season Pass 3 is planned.

Asuka R# is a highly technical character, wielding 26 types of Spells with a range of effects useful for different battle situations.

He stands at the pinnacle even among the company of generally highly capable magic wielders. He is both a scientist and also unparalleled in his mastery of magic—what one would call a genius.

Although he is generally polite and humble, he often finds even his carefully considered statements can result in discord. In contrast to his intellectual capabilities, he severely lacks in stamina, with the slightest exercise tiring him out. Any physically straining tasks are handled by custom-made bits of his.

Asuka continues to transmit “clear numbers” from space, in the hopes of bringing peace to Earth.

New Battle Stage: Tir na nOg!

The additional battle stage Tir na nOg is home to a space colony created by humankind to survive in outer space. The previously abandoned and dilapidated colony has been repaired and found a new use.

From a giant telescope to a Japanese-style garden, this stage is populated by a variety of items reflecting the tastes of the current resident.

Two Additional Color Packs Celebrating 25 Years of Guilty Gear Available Now

We are excited to announce new additional color packs celebrating the 25th anniversary of Guilty Gear, the Guilty Gear 25th Anniversary Appreciation Color and the Guilty Gear 25th Anniversary Colors. Both packs add new colours for every currently released character. The Appreciation Color is available to download free of charge, so be sure to pick it up on May 25, 2023!

I watched Asuka's arcade mode! Here's what I gathered

Asuka R. Kruetz created Asuka #R to be a better version of himself that would actually interact with and understand others, which implies (to me) that:

He thinks himself so incapable of change and beyond any form of redemption to the point where he literally started over from the ground up WITH A CLONE. And

Asuka struggles to understand the emotions of others. He says that himself- He understands logically that people with different ideals will have conflict, but not the human emotions behind it all. That's because he naturally sees things through a very scientific, logical lens. He gets the emotions are there, he just doesn't... get them (He's so very autistic).

3. When Asuka interacts with others, he tries to be as inoffensive and polite as possible, even with his clones. But because of that, he doesn't share his opinions. He shares analysis of data. Which is something that many people dislike. He doesn't get that, by not saying what he thinks, people perceive him as not caring about anything.

What Asuka #R is saying here is that even though he made the fighting clones, every piece of data came from the original Asuka's memories and analysis. It was the original Asuka's perception of the people he met that shaped those clones, whether he understood the uniqueness in others at the time or not. When that data was given to Asuka #R, he was able to see the data in the individual and not the individual in data.

Which, Asuka doesn't really get at the moment, because he doesn't understand the inherit uniqueness of every living being. So when his clone says this:

The journey Asuka R. Kruetz goes on in his Arcade mode is, simply put, understanding that not everything makes sense. And it doesn't need to - it just is.

I think this means that, even if Asuka made a thousand clones, he'd still find flaws in each and every one until the end of time. Even if he could create a perfect version of himself, someone would find that perfect version disagreeable or unlikable and, therefore, imperfect.

Sol would rather fight a problem, and Asuka would rather discuss a plan to solve it. Happy goes into hours of theatrics, and Asuka is straightforward, to the point.

When everything in the world is, by nature, unique and imperfect, things will clash and conflict. And that's not always a bad thing. Sometimes, it's a good chance to learn. Sometimes, it gives us a way to understand one another better.

I think that's exactly what Asuka #R and those clones were trying to show to Asuka.

The universe is chaotic and illogical and unfair, and yet life continues to endure. Everything is unique, and that's amazing. So, as long as time continues, things are going to be crazy, and that's just fine.

Realizing with Asuka’s release there is an absurd amount of characters in Guilty Gear that have been cloned or copied

-Ky (Robo-Ky line)

-Dizzy (non-canonical, that one Accent Core ending where she gets captured by the PWAB)

-Potemkin (non-canonical, Robo-Ky’s ending in Accent Core involves his line being decomissioned and replaced by a Robo-Potemkin line)

-Happy Chaos (makes his own effigies to take damage for him)

-Aria (Good lord where do we begin between between Justice and her various clones and the absurd number of Valentines)

-Asuka (made out of curiosity and/or to work through his personal problems)

I know clones are a common fighting game tropes but this is getting a little silly. Like as far as I can tell Sol is literally the only main protagonist who hasn’t been cloned yet

I’ve been curious about this for a while, but is there a reason that Asuka’s name is the way it is?

Because in Japanese it’s written 飛鳥＝Ｒ＝クロイツ.

I know 2/3rds of it is Christian R(osen)kreuz but why is his first name kanji? Is there any reason for this? Is it a reference? Even if it is a reference, he is not Japanese so wouldn’t it be アスカ＝Ｒ＝クロイツ ?

Is there some Asuka lore I don’t know about? Is it just an aesthetic choice/to make his name as wacky as possible? (I mean, a kanji, romaji, kana combo for a name isn’t something you don’t see every day).

This has been on my mind for weeks.

I don't have citations for any of this so take it all with a grain of salt because I'm largely speculating.

飛鳥 means "flying bird" and Asuka's got a lot of bird/flying imagery in GG, especially in Strive. It could be that Daisuke just liked the motifs, but his design decisions are generally much deeper than that. Asuka has a LOT of themes baked into his character for things like Japan post-WW2/atomic bomb, the effects of horrors of decisions made during wars on the people who make them, and "sacrifice for a greater good." This last one is evident in the decision he had to make in redirecting Justice's laser towards Japan, killing millions but saving the rest of the world from whatever destruction the Universal Will was going to bring.

Asuka being an American with a Japanese first name and German last name fits into that too, with those three countries all interacting closely in horrible ways during WW2. Again, him having to redirect Justice's laser mirrors America's actions with the atomic bomb. "They dropped the bombs to prevent further deaths during the war" is a common (grim) reasoning given for it.

It's possible the bird motifs suggest a freedom and want for a life unburdened by heavy decisions that Asuka is never going to have. The more abstract bird motifs, like his weird eyepatch thingy, could also tie in with angel symbology and the Rosenkreutz/Rosicrucian Order stuff, which then loop back to his connection with magic and Backyard esoterica.

On a lighter note, Daisuke was almost definitely inspired by Go Nagai's Devilman, despite me not having a citation for that lol. 飛鳥 is the same kanji Ryo Asuka from Devilman uses, and GG Asuka's relationship to Sol is almost 1:1 to Ryo's and Akira Fudo's in Devilman. Sol's Dragon Install designs borrow some inspirations from the Devilman's too, most notably in the weird head-wing thingies.

Asuka R. Kreutz is a character that has a ton of very deliberate and carefully chosen elements to his character. I have zero doubts that, when we do find out why Daisuke named him the way he did, it's going to open the floodgates for intense analysis.

He would be touch starved HEAVILY. I mean he’s been Romantically alone for a century and been seen as a second satan. So he would have not felt the touch of anyone for years on years. So anytime you would play with his hair, he would immediately just Melt in it.

He would also try to keep you as close as he can just because he’s terrified of losing you. He often overthinks on how much pain he’s caused and often has to be comforted about it. But of course he tries to learn from his mistakes and tries his be the very best he can for you.

Such a sucker for physical attention. He would give up anything just to feel your touch at any point of the day. He wants to know that he loves you and you love him and he just shows it though the little touchs. Whenever your in the kitchen, he would wrap his arms around yours and watch’s you as you cook. And whenever you two are in bed. He’s by your side attached like a koala.

He always asks if you have had a good day from work/school whenever you come home. And when you say you’ve had a bad day, he pampers you for the whole day. He’ll massage you, make a sweet bath for you, make food for you in bed, the whole nine yards.

He loves it whenever you just rant about your day to him. He just loves your voice and could listen to it for hours. (And sometimes he does). It's like a mini podcast for you two because he would always give small advice if you wanted it.
