They were both related to OTMAA. Astrid (1905) was a second cousin through the Danish line (her mother Ingeborg and Nicholas II were cousins), and there are photos of her and her sisters (her brother wasn't born yet) with OTMAA. Her older sister Margaretha was a "penpal" to Maria Nikolaevna; they were born only a day apart: Margaretha on 25 June 1899 and Maria on 26 June 1899. Leopold (1901) was a third cousin once removed through the Coburg line; his great-grandfather Leopold I was the uncle of Queen Victoria, Alix's grandmother. I haven't seen that Leopold or his siblings ever met OTMAA, but their father King Albert was often depicted on postcards alongside Nicholas II and George V during WWI.

Today I visited the Astrid Lindgrens Värld, a theme park dedicated to Astrid Lindgrens children's books. For all the people who grew up with her stories as well, have some pictures:

Doing my thing, searching and searching, I found a photo of Margrethe, Astrid and Margaretha with Elvis in 1960.

It was during a break from the shooting of G.I. Blues. Don't know why, and why they were in Hollywood, but the seem pretty happy with the meeting hahaha

OTMAA Contemporaries: Belgian Royal Family

From left: Princess Marie-Jose, Crown Prince Leopold, Crown Princess Astrid (in back), Queen Elisabeth, King Albert I, and Prince Charles. The Belgians were distantly related to Alix and OTMAA via that Saxe-Coburg line, as King Leopold I, the first King of the Belgians, was the beloved uncle of Queen Victoria. Prince Leopold (future King Leopold III), was born in 1901, Prince Charles in 1903, and Princess Marie-Jose in 1906. Leopold's wife, Astrid of Sweden, was more closely related to OTMAA through the Danish family: her mother Ingeborg was a Danish princess and a first cousin of Nicholas II. There are photos of OTMAA with Astrid and her sisters in their childhoods.

sometimes i wonder how one's brain can be so sad about something and miss someone you've never met. someone who passed away before you were born. astrid will always mean so much to me, as an author and person. <3
