Was Cecil ever a theatre kid?
A theatre kid? No, no, no.
I was THE theatre kid.
- Cecil G. Palmer
****
They have pictures up on the wall of the drama classroom of all the different shows they've done. I got bored one day last semester and counted all the different pics with Cecil in them (38). He was the lead guy in 35 of them.
But seriously, though, you don't get picked to be the next Voice of Night Vale without being some kind of theatre kid.

Aster, you are singlehandedly drawing every storytelling fiber left in me out 😅 (but thank you 😊)
Okeydokey here we go! -spins the wheel a third time-
!! I'm glad it shuffled to this one, if my lil western novel (unnamed but referred to as Lasater, Kansas) was a movie this would be the end credits song. 😭
Oops I went and reread the entire ending of the story looking for a line for this and was astonished to find that it doesn't suck.
Dr. Alan picked up a sheaf of papers all bundled together and tied with a thin strap of buckskin and placed these in Bet’s lap. She examined them and recognized Lasater’s sister’s curled penmanship and cramped style of writing in every space the paper afforded. “He had these tucked in his jacket with him,” Dr. Alan told her. “Write to her. She ought to know what has happened here.” Bet smoothed her hand over the letters. She wondered how many months or years they chronicled. She didn’t have to wonder how often Lasater had read them. The softness of the paper and the fraying creases told her all of that
something something my lil western story that on the surface is about danger and vengeance and justice but underneath is actually all about fidelity and friendship and making peace. 😭😭😭😭😭

The role of the king is a lonely one to play
But cards in the ring have been dealt in the wrong way
The role of the king is a lonely one to play
No matter the lives of the people before me
All that I seek is the path to glory, glory

I figured that since I’ve wrapped Arc I of Asterism I should make a mini playlist for the main songs that inspired it!
Tumblr media
And because I’m a huge nerd, here’s why each song is there.
Introduction to the Snow
“Alone at the edge of a universe humming a tune” I mean come on. This song is the first song on my writing playlist for this fic just because it so perfectly fits Lance’s starting point.
Lights Are On
Such a good song that was all I listened to while writing Lance alone in space, and just the feeling of abandonment within those first lyrics I just *cries*
Estrellas Fugaces
Reminds me so much of Lance and Keith, and how short their time together was in the beginning, but just how much it impacted both of them, and will continue to impact them throughout the story hehe.
IDK You Yet
Really what Keith’s grieving process looks like. He didn’t know Lance for long, but finds himself so deeply affected by the apparent death of someone he felt he didn’t get to truly know yet, and how that drives his actions later.
In the Stars
If IDK You Yet was Keith’s grieving song, this is Hunk’s. Hunk, who knew Lance so well and could never imagine a life without him, is now thrust into that nightmare.
Where’s My Love
Just all the fun of the team’s desperation to find Lance, and Lance’s own initial desire to just go home.
Kingsguard
I am such a lover of Jo Blankenburg’s music, and especially his album Clandestine, which is just filled with suspense. This song was on repeat as I wrote Lance’s fight in the arena, and I think it fits pretty well.
Saturn
This song finds its way onto literally every playlist I make. I’d like to think it represents Lance’s own homesickness and his grief towards that childlike wonder he had for the universe. Since his time in space, that excitement has begun to dwindle as he’s been subjected to the more sinister aspects of space. Fucking love this song (I first heard it in a warrior cats animatics years ago and that fact continues to haunt me)
Anyways yeah that’s all. I’ll definitely do one of these for the next couple arcs as I write them. :)

my complaint with bg3 playlists and fantasy-media-inspired playlists in general is that there's too much hozier and taylor swift and not enough blackmore's night. not enough enya either but i don't think there's a fantastical situation that blackmore's night hasn't written a banger for and bg3 playlists are suffering for it. actually i think blackmore's night should have been part of the official soundtrack. no "where are we going from here"? no "all for one"? there's a song about eating shit in a magical tower for gods sakes. they use the word "doth." COME ON. that's all just on one album too. there's one about really loving oak trees. i could make mini playlists for every main character just from blackmore's night probably. but nooooooooo let's throw another "take me to church" encore on the playlist instead, very inspired, groundbreaking, never been done before

this book review is as long as a critical role episode and just as entertaining. holy smokes. I knew the Lightlark situation was a trainwreck but this is so bad. (here's the written version).
my personal favorite part is this, when the reviewer does more math in 30 seconds than the author apparently did in 10 years and identifies a massive flaw central to the worldbuilding:

🍧, 🌈, and ✏ for both ROs, Jesse, and Harrison please?
🍧 SHAVED ICE - do they still have any objects from their childhood? what significance does it have to them? what would their reaction be if they lost it?
Aster: Aster doesnt really have any objects from their childhood they didnt really have much during the childhood at all. They do have their hat that Adrian gave them that they hold pretty dear to their heart but that doesnt really count
Ro: Ro has a couple of things from their father including a lighter that they always carry around. They dont even smoke but it makes them feel better having it in their pocket. If they lost it they'd be devastated. Their father didnt leave very much behind when he died so every little thing he did have Ro holds very dear.
Jesse: Jesse has a switch balde that he ends up giving to Mc on their birthday. It was one of the first things he bought with his own money and helped him get out of a couple tricky situations. He wouldn't be heart broken if it was lost probably just a little bummed out but he'd just buy a new one
Harrison: Harrison has a broken watch. Hes had it his entire life but he can't really remember where he got it from. He normal just keeps it put away so that it doesnt end up getting more broken. Jesse doesnt know that he has it but Mc snooped through his stuff and found it once. For his birthday that year they buy him a new one, and trust me when i say that he literally never takes it off. He'd kill a man without hesitation if they tried to take it from him.
🌈 RAINBOW - what advice would they give to their younger self?
Aster: Save yourself the pain and leave now. Trust me it's for the best
Ro: You can't protect everyone and you've got to find a way to live with that
Jesse: Just because she died doesn't mean you've got to die with her
Harrison: You can't spend the rest of your life feeling sorry for yourself
✏️ PENCIL - is there a particular quote / lyric that you associate with them?
i literally just went through their playlist and picked a song. Im also adding Mc to this one<3
Aster:
"The moon will sing a song for me
I loved you like the sun
Bore the shadows that you made
With no light of my own
I shine only with the light you gave me
I shine only with the light you gave me"
The Moon Will Sing by The Crane Wives
Ro:
"The evil it spread like a fever ahead
It was night when you died, my firefly
What could I have said to raise you from the dead?
Oh could I be the sky on the Fourth of July?"
- Fourth of July by Sufjan Stevens
Jesse:
"Back when I was feeling broken
I focused on a prayer
You came deep as any ocean
Did something out there hear?"
- Future Days by Pearl Jam(I like troy bakers version more)
Harrison:
"Just close your eyes, the sun is going down
You'll be alright, no one can hurt you now
Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound"
- Safe & Sound by Taylor Swift and The Civil Wars
Blessing (Mc):
"I should go now quietly
For my bones have found a place to lie down and sleep
Where all my layers can become reeds
All my limbs can become trees
All my children can become me
What a mess I leave"
- Smother by Daughter

Ooh boy, two asks! 😅
Ok uhhh here we go....!
This song is strongly linked in my mind to my story, The Wolf, the Madness, and the Golden Bird. Specifically, the connections between the protagonist Rian, the Wolf, and the evil enchanter:
The Wolf stood next to the enchanter as though standing were the only thing it was still capable of doing. Its legs shook with effort and its eyes were cloudy and pained; the sharpness of them was gone, replaced by an empty, hungry stare. Its tail was tucked around its back leg as it hunkered beside the enchanter, a snarl fixed on its face as it watched Rian, its ears low and twisting with annoyance or fear.
(Ugh, I really, really need to dive into the worldbuilding of this one and finish it. 😭 It's my retelling of "Tsarevitch Ivan, the Firebird, and the Gray Wolf.")

The whisper in my heart, it could never speak up
The message in my chest gathered too much dust
I can't afford the truth even if it's unjust
Keep it top shelf, keep it all locked up
