Is anyone else as horrified by the ASPCA commercials as I am? They say that every minute that we wait causes these animals to suffer more, but I'm watching them film these suffering animals for quite a long time. Don't they realize that they are right and every minute that they film the animals they are suffering needlessly. If they showed the animals being rescued immediately, I'd be more likely to donate. I don't think that they understand the magnitude of the suffering or that they are prolonging it. Therefore, I don't think that they will use my money efficiently. Just saying. Stop filming. Rescue the animals. Then film or film the rescue. It's not rocket science. Geez...

Transduction and a domestic cat's perception of a meow's meaning
Is it like binary to them?
Seemingly, a cat's meow triggers in the cat a response in a way that parallels the way the pores on CDs are read and converted into imagery and sound through transduction.
Cats are born knowing to meow to gain their own feline mother's attention, and seem to learn their meow-language automatically as they grow and age, suggesting that feline language is genetically encoded into a cat's brain from birth.
I've learned to mimic the meow of the rescue strays I took care of in my teenage years. I wish to test the above theory, but lack the infrastructure to conduct such research. I am disappointed...

Do you know if the ASPCA is reliable, credible, or ethical? I see commercials about them all the time but I’ve never stopped to think about it.
I haven’t done much research into ASPCA as a non-profit; however, I do know that they do some good work! Unlike HSUS, they do indeed operate an actual shelter in NYC, as well as an incredibly helpful 24/7 Pet Poison Control hotline. So, they are actually helping animals, which is more than a lot of these big charities can say.
#please note that like most pet poison hotlines a consult fee is charged#these are actual vets and they need to get paid somehow#aspca#answered asks#anonymous

I have been told by my motherly figure that I must tell the interweb of her new cruise ship idea
We need ASPCA Cruise Lines. They just go from port to port in the US, never go out into international waters so they don’t get in trouble, and have roaming pets
The whole idea started when we went on our cruise this past week. While at dinner we were lookin at our scrapes (like some fat off of a steak) and missing our cats n dogs because they always enjoy that part.
So, what if cat cruises. Dogs would be a little harder cause you can’t really train them to go to the bathroom in only one spot. With cats you have litter boxes and it’s not tHaT hard to get them to follow the rules. Just gotta get a herd of cats that can wander the decks freely. You could also build lil tunnels in the walls and from deck to deck so they don’t have to use the elevators n stairs if they don’t want to. (But you KNOW that there will be a cat taking up 1/4 of the elevator just for bath time).
I called it an ASPCA Cruise because it’d be a good opportunity for adoptable cats. If a cruiser just so happens to bond with a cat and wants to take it home they can go ahead and fill out the paperwork there. How that cat gets back to their home is up to them, whether they’re going to try to brave the car ride or attempt to fly it back.
I mean just imagine wandering around a hotel and there’s just some cattos wandering around, or when you get back to your room there’s a catto on your bed and you are their human now.

Blue Desert Books and this little chonk are forever intertwined.📚
Living in Portland was brutal, not necessarily because of the people or the climate, but the whirlwind of life events that hit all at once when I moved there. Once my living situation settled I went to the @aspca determined to “just look” but ready to adopt when the right one came along. I saw a pair of orange tabby’s in one of this big displays, and asked to see one. They put me in the little room, then came in to tell me the kitten I was looking at had just been adopted, but there was another one in the same kennel.
He was 9mos old, and had been returned twice already.
When they brought him to the to room, he immediately b-lined it for the farthest corner under a bench, but we hung out for a few minutes and he warmed up a little.
I don’t know how, I just knew he was perfect.
.
I was so broke at the time (hence the going just to look) there was a woman behind me at the register who gave me the an extra $15 to get the full kitten setup kit.
.
I was living in a trailer at the time and was so paranoid the air conditioning wasn’t working well enough I drove home every day on my lunch break just to make sure he was ok. Shortly thereafter we had to move again, but this time we moved into a little studio apartment with a beautiful little patio that had an amazing view of the apartment complex dumpsters.
.
There was a goodwill down the street, with a “vintage books” shelf that I loved to go peruse and whenever I felt isolated, depressed, or lonely I would splurge the $5 I could spare to buy one.
.
With the help of little (he’s not little anymore he’s a good 13 pounds now) Archie and thrift store books, the absolute rubble that was my self confidence and mental health began to rebuild.
.
We have moved 7 times and 3 states since then, and I swear to god I don’t know what I would do without this derpy mildly overweight anxiety riddled tabby cat and this #bookstagram community.
.
Adopt don’t shop for books and cats. Please consider donating to the ASPCA so other broke ambitious people can find their furry soul mates.
