Now that I have watched it, after years of avoiding it for angst reasons...

Yea, I watched Banana Fish. I don't think I've cried that hard in a long time.

Can I have a hug or something? I'll be talking about Ash and Eiji later but for now, I'm gonna go find ice cream to make myself feel better.

Feeling kinda down today, which means it's time to cheer myself up with more of my Banana Fish headcanons that I'm gonna share with y'all. Yay!

Here we go.

So, the idea for this one was supplied by my BFF (Imma call her 'Panini').

One evening Eiji riots against Ash overworking himself with streets' business and drags his ass to rest and -

...watch some of the Studio Ghibli classics, starting with my all time favourite 'Spirited Away'. And while Ash, wrapped up in a blanket a la burrito (courtesy of Eiji), tries to play his grumpy card at first, he finds himself caught up in the story soon enough, sympathizing with Chihiro.

Next on the list is 'Whisper of the Heart', which is a total blast. And then there's Eiji, who blurts out something like "Look, Ash, Shizuku and Seiji are kinda like us!" (Y'know, cause an aspiring writer, who struggles to find herself and spends all her free time reading books, and a violin maker protege.) And Ash just gapes at him, blushing slightly, like dude, they've literally just proposed to each other, are you suggesting something here?

And now we're getting to "Howl's Moving Castle", and here's a fun fact: according to Panini, Howl has blond hair and green eyes in the book that anime was based on. No jokes, when Panini first saw Ash appear on the screen, her initial reaction was "OHMYGODITSHOWL".

And as it turns out, Ash read the original novel, when he was little, and without thinking points out the appearance factor. Which stirs something inside Eiji and prompts him to notice even more similarities between the two blonds. Like, it's totally not Eiji keeping up with Ash's antics the way Sophie is handling Howl's hysterics, while also doing their best to prevent their households from falling apart. Recieving a death glare in reply, Eiji continues to watch the movie in silence, but the list goes on.

It's totally not Ash taking Eiji to his happy places safe spots in NYC, like Howl showed Sophie to his meadow. The way Sophie travels back to the Moving Castle, because Howl's heart is leading her. And how Howl gradually loses his humanity with more time he spends in a monster shape, fighting in a war, and how Sophie comforts him and brings him back.

I'm getting emotional here, pass the tissues, please.

Upon recognizing all this, Eiji finds himself squeezing Ash in a heart-melting hug and mumbling something like "you deserve so much better, than this", while Lynx freezes with popcorn halfway to his mouth and, bewildered, replies "bro, I'm good with the living room, but if you wanted to go to the movie theater, you could've asked?" in the moment of his brilliant stupidity.

Eiji doesn't let go, and as they cuddle up and continue their Ghibli marathon, Ash finally feels at peace through the warmth and soothing comfort radiating from the screen and the boy, sitting next to him.

So I convinced my friend to watch Banana Fish with me, and she came up with some nicknames for the characters:

Eiji = Elijah

Ash = pornhub boi *I- I am also concerned for her*

Shorter = purple guy *Man behind the slaughter plays in the distance*

Arthur = Yellow troll

Max = mr. Sniffer *Ash smelling the wine scene*

Sing = lil blueberry

yut lung = ponytail with magic wand

And my personal favorite,

Dino = Mr.Clean not so clean *need I say more?*

My eye twitches every time a character refers to Ash as a devil or demon. He's neither of those things; he's a victim who used the tools forced upon him in order to survive.

despite of how outsiders view ash based on the pain from his past, the deep thing he longs for is a chance to truly be with eiji and say a proper goodbye, cos he knows he can’t really be with him, cos it’s not safe.

ok but i just finished banana fish and the ending is so heartbreaking and painful to watch, ash and eiji deserved so much better and the fact that ash died in the library while eiji was returning to japan doesn't feel right to me, but it's realistic... IT HURTS OK
