🌈Queer Teens

Who are we?

We are Queer Teens, an organization which seeks to create a friendly and inclusive space for queer and feminist youths to express their ideas. We are primarily based in Shanghai, China and organized by a group of high-schoolers. However, even though we are a LGBTQ+ Youth organization, we strongly encourage diversity in age and nationality (which is why we also got on Tumblr!), so please join us if you want to!

What do we do?

1. 1v1 counseling for queer teens

If you are ever in distress about your identity or lack of understanding from people around you, feel free to just send us a message and we will try to communicate with you! Our email is queerteens.cn@gmail.com. Be aware that none of us have undergone training and offer this help from an unprofessional perspective. Seek professional help if necessary. 

2. Recommend queer theory and feminism books

Members of our organization are reading as many books as we can to recommend some books we like! We will recommend books about queer theory or feminism in the future!

3. Express our own ideas!

We may regularly or irregularly post blogs about our discussions and conclusions! Feel free to comment below and start new discussions! We may also organize online conferences in the future, but that’s not decided for now. 

4. Be the bridge between Chinese queer teens and Tumblr queer teens

As we all know, the existence of the Great Firewall of China prevents Chinese queer teens from going on Tumblr and many other more inclusive online spaces. In addition, China itself is not particularly welcoming towards queer people in general, not to mention queer teens. Thus, we will bridge the gap by sharing stories and connecting pen friends (through e-mail). More details of this activity will be mentioned later!

Why Queer Teens?

According to a study conducted by Johns et al. 2019&2020, LGBTQ+ youth are more than 4 times more likely to commit suicide than their peers. The Trevor Project even estimated that at least 1 LGBTQ+ youth every 45 seconds in the U.S. alone. Teen mental health is a serious issue we should consider, not to mention the increased risk LGBTQ+ youth endure due to bullying, discrimination and lack of understanding due to their queer identity. 

I myself, one of the admins of this blog who now writes the paragraph, am a high-school non-binary lesbian currently living in China. I have found using Tumblr liberating from my rather conservative environment. China is not very accommodating towards lesbians, and it’s even worse for people questioning of their gender. When I had gone to the school counselor(luckily, our school has one) to attempt to talk over my identity issues, I was treated like child “poisoned by the woke west”. My gender dysphoria around my breasts were brushed off with “they weren’t that big to begin with” and my dislike of culturally feminine words’ use on me was also not treated with understanding. 

After that unsatisfactory experience, I want to create a platform where queer teens can share their experience and talk to each other with understanding that we share. I want a place where we can express our own ideas in an inclusive environment, and for Chinese queer teens to be able to contact openly queer teens from all around the world without the limitations of the Great Firewall of China. May Queer Teens grow to become this platform. 

What can you do?

1. Share stories of yourself

Askbox and submissions are always open. Anonymous submissions are welcome! We may translate your content to post to Chinese platforms so please inform us if you don’t want that to happen.

2. Recommend books that gave you new insight

Our members are currently reading feminism and queer theory books for future recommendation, and we greatly appreciate your opinions!

3. Express your ideas through asks or submissions

We aim to create an inclusive space for queer teens around the world, so please be polite in discussions. TERFs, homophobes and trolls will be blocked.

4. Seek help from us if you need to

The aforementioned non-binary lesbian admin usually runs this blog (Yes I am unfortunately chronically online). If you want to talk, send me a message and I will overcome my social anxiety to help you at all times. Be aware that none of us has gone through professional training and it would be better to seek professional help if needed. 

5. Join us!

If you are interested in running this blog with us together, we’re glad to make our community larger! We are still just starting up, so things may be a bit messy. Otherwise, we’ll happy to accept new participants!

General Requirements

All contributors must be 18+

Contributors must be willing and able to meet all deadlines, including two progress checks/edit rounds. You can find the full project timeline here.

Contributors will be asked to provide their email and their Discord information in the application. Discord is not required, but contributors are expected to check emails for official communications.

Experience working with zines is preferred, but not required.

All applicants must submit 3 examples of their work for review. All submissions should be of the quality you intend to deliver.

Writer Requirements

Submissions must be prose.

Works around 2,000 words are preferred, with 3,000 maximum.

At least one submission must demonstrate how you write the Linked Universe Links in a canon-adjacent setting.

Writing will be evaluated by the mods based on the following criteria:

Structure (does the writer use appropriate page structure, and understand textual compositions?)

Grammar/Punctuation (does the writer use correct grammar/punctuation?)

Characterization (how does the writer portray and develop the characters to further the story?)

Plot (can the writer tell a complete narrative within the word limit?)

Submissions should be of the medium you intend to deliver.

We accept digital art, traditional art, cosplay, craft photos/collages, and other types of visual art. Artists will be asked to specify what kind of art they want to contribute in the application.

For visual artists, please attempt to submit full compositions with backgrounds, color, and at least one character.

High quality photographs are required for all physical works.

Art will be evaluated by the mods based on the following criteria:

Basics (does the artist understand basic anatomy/perspective?)

Composition (how does the artist fit narrative elements on a page?)

Color (does the artist understand how to use color?)

Creativity (is the work unique and interesting?)

Tone (does the work match the zine's theme and goals?)

Craftsmanship (for physical works only)

We're looking for artists to design 3 stickers, 1 bookmark, and 1 keychain.

An artist can apply to be both a zine artist and a merch artist, but we will prioritize separate merch artists so that we can have as many artists participating as possible.

Experience designing merch is preferred, but not required.

Merch art submissions will be evaluated based on the same criteria as zine artists.

DEFENDERS OF THE LEGACY is a Bloody Roar fanzine celebrating the fighting game series about zoanthropic street brawlers. Through this mixed media project, we hope to show appreciation for all aspects of the series that kept us coming back through the years. 

As Bloody Roar nears its 30th birthday, we want to reflect on what its legacy is, what about it we want to preserve, defend, and share into the future. Through this, we can prove that it’s possible to keep the passion for this series alive in our own ways as fans.

This zine will include illustrations, writing, and merchandise focused on the characters and story. If we get enough interest we might also be able to include alternative media like comics, cosplay, and maybe even music! Our plan is for a digital-only release distributed for free to anyone who wishes to view it and share in this special series. What we’d really like is to make the PDF printer friendly so everyone can make their own personal physical copies at home.

Because this project is a celebration of canon, no OCs will feature in this particular zine. However, if there is enough interest, a separate BR OC zine could become a reality in the future.

Please bear in mind that, while pairings/couplings and shipping should not be a major focus for entries in this zine, interaction between characters is highly encouraged!

Due to Bloody Roar’s nature as a fighting game about beasts with teeth and claws, this zine will include depictions of violence and touch on mature themes like discrimination and human experimentation as portrayed in canon.

All material in this project will be rated as appropriate for the series itself: ESRB T / PEGI 12 / CERO C / PG-13

The game is Hookah Haze !! It's a really nice game about a person (canon nonbinary mc woohoo :3) with a terminal illness that, under their doctor's suggestions, decides to become a hookah lounge's manager for a bit. They have 2 weeks of painkillers and based on their decisions they meet up to two of these three girls!! The more they come to the lounge the more you learn about them

It's really a nice game about bonding and past trauma and healing !!! I love it so much and the art is so so gorgeous (if you like NSO you'll definitely like this if you're into that art style !!!)

I haven't been playing it lately but everything about it is amazing ^_^ and relatable sometimes too lol so definitely recommend it!!!

As the title suggests this is a gift exchange for femslash Disney works, it will entirely online, no physicals gifts will be exchanged.

This is something for fun between fans, you don’t have to be the most technically skilled artist or writer to join, as long as you put effort into your work it will be appreciated.

I’m assuming the main bulk, if not all of the fills will be art/manips and fic but fanvids, fanmixes, voice acting, audio edits, anything you can transmit over the internet is acceptable, as long as you put work into it.

Please familiarize yourself with exchange rules before participating. The goal of this exchange is to be fun and to foster enthusiasm for M- and E-rated works in Silmarillion fandom. Eligibility:

You must be 18+ to participate in this exchange. One signup per person.

This exchange is hosted on AO3. You must have an AO3 account to participate. If you don’t currently have an account and would like one, the mod has a limited number of account invitations available; please contact them to request one.

Expectations:

You will make and receive a work of fanfiction or fanart focused on one or more Silmarillion characters, with a Mature or Explicit rating. For fanfiction, the minimum wordcount is 1,000 words. For fanart, works should be at minimum clean linework on unlined paper.

Nominations:

Nominations will run for one week, beginning Sept. 30.

Exchange tagset is located here. When nominations are open, you will see a button at the top right of your screen that says "Nominate." Clicking on this will take you to the nomination form. You can nominate up to 10 relationships via the form.

Why nominate?

Nominating helps you ensure the ships you want to create for are present in the tag set, particularly if they are not already canonical tags for The Silmarillion on AO3 (e.g. your rarest rarepairs, Character/OC ships etc). You can nominate up to 10 ships. Nominating helps potential participants get excited about the exchange and get ideas for what they might like to request/offer, which is important in a fandom with so many potential combinations of characters.

Do I have to nominate?

No. Before you submit your nominations, feel free to take a look at the tagset to see if your ships have already been nominated. If so, your work here is done, unless you feel like nominating other ships you don’t yet see in the tagset. If you’re a major multishipper you can even coordinate with your friends to make sure all your rare ships are included in the tagset.

What about threesomes/moresomes?

Threesomes/moresomes are eligible to be nominated.

What about ships with original characters?

Original characters are eligible to be nominated as part of a ship. (Ex. Maedhros/Original Male Character)

What about individual characters?

If you are interested in characters by themselves, this will be an opt-in you can include on your sign up.

What if I forgot to include a ship?

Ask someone to add it to their nominations, or email/send an ask to the mod and they will accomodate you as long as we are not too far into signups.

The signup form will be located on the sidebar here. More specific instructions to come when signups open.

Keep in mind you MUST include some details of what you'd like your gift to contain, either in the Details section or in an optional linked "Dear Creator" letter that is complete and unlocked by the time signups close. These can be general likes, specific prompts, or a combination.

DNWs: if you have DNWs, these MUST be listed in the Details section. For the purposes of this exchange, please be specific in your DNWs - "DNW kink" is too vague. "DNW breathplay" or "DNW watersports" (for example) are easier for your creator to understand and work around.

Treats:

Requests will be visible throughout the exchange. If you are interested in writing or drawing treats/extra gifts, you can go ahead and post your work to the collection, check the "this work is a gift" box, and designate your recipient. You do not need to be signed up for the exchange to create treats.

Defaults/Pinch Hits:

Sometimes life happens and you are unable to complete your assignment. That's ok! If you know you will need to default, please do so as soon as possible to give us time to find an alternate creator to take on your assignment. If you default, you are not necessarily guaranteed a gift.

Calls for pinch hits will be posted on the exchange Tumblr and DW. If you are interested in being a pitch hitter, please let the mod know.
