I have missed you terribly since my school's testing week has taken my time and creativity away from Tumblr (awful as it is the once place i can take the time to be silly on) and by extension, you (awful, truly horrifying).

I have also decided that old people are certainly a 50/50 in terms of being likeable, but worry not, I know for certain you will turn out to be a pleasant old little guy with flowers sewn into your cardigan with a cup of green tea by your side as you sit on a porch of a beautiful farmhouse. Because you're just cool like that.

I will scream at the unruly youngsters enough for both of us as a good neighbor is.

I hope you are having fun in Tennessee, hiking and shopping (retail therapy is fun for a reason)! I also hope that you have thoroughly enjoyed a good night's sleep and hear not of family members' out-of-pocket comments (family members can be strange like that) but rather the satisfying sound of footsteps instead (they are strangely therapeutic). Overall, I hope you are doing very well and enjoying your trip. Once more, I have missed you and you're wonderful personality dearly, and yes, indeed, I do curse the beast that feasts upon my energy called "academics".

You are definitely correct in your take on old people- ive experienced both ends of the old people spectrum, often times from the same person!! also that genuinely sounds like the most perfect future i could imagine, especially you living nearby and scaring away the bothersome youth for me. that sounds lovely and beautiful and perfect to me. id invite you over every evening and wed try new teas or gossip about the other old people in town. and wed go shopping in cute little antique shops or try new cafes every other weekend.

I am loving tennessee so much- i have hiked, and shopped!! your ask actually gave me the idea for retail therapy and i found some of the cutest little stone guys- a bee and a frog!-and a really cute ring, so thanks!<3 sleep, however is a a fickle creature and im actually writing this at 2am lols. and as usual, the out of pocket commentary is overflowing, but we persist as usual. as much as i love my family, sometimes they can be oddly. to say the least.

i too am cursing the godless creature that haunts us all- "academics"!! picture me raising my fist and shaking it at academics for keeping you from me. you defenitly dont sound childish!!! this was actually so lovely to read and really fun to respond to! i hope youre having a better time now that exams have released you, and that your having a wonderful spring time!!you definitely DONT have to apologize taking time for yourself or for your irl responsibilities! you deserve to take breaks from tumblr if thats what you need, and shld t feel pressured to keep in touch constantly, although i love talking to you whenever we have the time. i really do miss you<33🥺

heres some cute little anecdotes from my trip cause i find them fun and love to ramble lols-

i got to pet 2 dogs!!! one of them was really gentle and shy, she was called marge i think, and my 2 year old nephew also got to pet her and loved her. the second ones name was atlas, he had hetochromia! atlas was really friendly and liked jumping onto people- he was so sweet, but my nephew was startled and started crying- dw hes fine lols. and atlas's people were soo friendly!!! also there was a family where i was staying who had a cat named oreo. he is the mellowest cat ive ever met he was so chill and friendly!! he even let me hold him!

I have such a bad sunburn!! usually in new york, where i live, i just tan, but ig the sun in tennessee is stronger or more powerful, because im very tanned but also have a red nose- rudolph style as my brother keeps mentioning. ouch :/

idk how you feel about sharks but i LOVE them and we went to an aquarium there- and they had so. many. sharks!!!! there was a tiger shark, a mini hammerhead shark, and like 3 nurse sharks. there was also a huge sawfish which is not a shark, but still super cool! and, there were these hugeee stingrays that where soooo gorgeous!! also i saw a japanese spider crab for the first time and idk if you know what those look like but they are so creepy-cool, you should look em up!

have u guys ever noticed how in the pleiades night outfits, only natsume and tsumugi have a pentagram on their designs? this is likely a reference to the Pentagram of Venus!

as 5 periods of Venus take eight years, it makes it so when viewed from earth, Venus is in the same position with respect not only to the sun, but also the stars 5 times! with its path creating a pentagram, its recognized as the Pentagram of Venus in astrology! only natsume and tsumugi have a reference to Venus, the planet of love!!

and for anyone confused, note how one circle is for venus and the other for earth, just like in their design!! venus also conjunctions with the pleiades yearly!!! its all connected!! its so cool!!!!

Another thing I like about the Brothership is that they didn't make Princess Peach was captured and I'm glad they gave her another role instead of this:

I do notice that Nintendo is leaning into giving Princess Peach more agency and control over her life instead of just making her the damsel in distress all the time.

While I often argue that a girl character can still be interesting while being vulnerable and in need of help, Princess Peach has gotten kidnapped in almost every single Mario game over the past 50 years, so it's nice to see Nintendo experimenting with other approaches to her character.

bruharvey with jason: before his death Jason was writing to Harvey in Arkham. I just imagine him keeping those letters afterwards. Also think Bruce pulled some strings so Harvey could go to Jason's funeral?

omg yes!!! jason drawing pictures of the weird pigeon he saw on patrol and adding his favourite quotes and little bitchy comments about bruce giving him a bedtime

i dont think jason would write a full letter (hed probably get embarrassed about it) but hed over a week or so write down his thoughts and doodle and maybe he drops cool looking leaves into the envelope too

he and bruce watch old movies and jason writes what he thought about them and when two face breaks out hes like "get used to grey ghost kid, hes been watching that shit for years"

after jasons death harvey definitely keeps the letters when hes in solitary after his latest go at the joker hell read those childish jokes and swallow down rage.

also im literally writing a jasons funeral fic where bruce gets harvey released for jasons funeral you 🤝 me -> good ideas

hi there! you said in your tags that the latest chapter of deep end contains the two scenes you built the entire fic on. i hope i'm not too nosy but i was wondering if you could tell us more about those two scenes? <3

omg hi anon!! yes i would LOVE to tell you more about those two scenes 🫡 gonna put this beneath the cut because i am a certified yapper and this WILL be longer than i intend it to be

the scenes in question are the two arguments with cosette and grantaire at the end. the cosette argument in particular is the basis of so much of this fic — the line "The dutiful martyr Enjolras, who has a flag where he should have a heart." was one of the very first things i wrote for deep end. not a very charitable place to begin from when it comes to enjolras' characterization, but even when i first wrote it, it was less about who enjolras was and more about how he was perceived.

okay i just scrolled allllllllll the way back to the very beginning of the edit history in my original deep end document (still titled "enjolsette siblings?" btw) and first of all i started writing this in MARCH which is wild to me. that was the month i finished reading les mis. wow. anyway apparently i wrote the first drafts of both these scenes in the same evening, and i'm honestly surprised by how much of them remained unchanged in the final version. at the time that i wrote them, they both occurred in chapter 8 of what i PLANNED to be 10 chapters. that's also extremely funny to me. there was really a time when i thought i could contain this story to 10 chapters...

when i wrote these chapters, i hadn't even written enjolras and cosette meeting yet. the original draft of the grantaire argument didn't have enjolras realizing he was in love with grantaire then. i was still in the first 10k of writing deep end when i wrote them. all that existed before these arguments were the original draft of chapter 1, half of the original draft of chapter 2, and the conversation with combeferre in chapter 5 that begins with combeferre saying "You've been spending a lot of time with Grantaire lately." so when i say these scenes are the basis of the entire fic, i really mean it. the whole time i was writing, i was pushing enjolras toward this point.

from the moment that i began writing deep end, it was intended to be an exploration of enjolras & his ideas of duty and justice. it has spiraled into being a story about a lot of other things, but in the kitchen with cosette, it comes down to this again. it comes down to: enjolras, and what he thinks his duty is, and just how wrong he is.

because he is wrong. money, whether she wants it or not, isn't going to "fix" cosette. there is no "fixing" cosette, because she's not broken. has she been hurt? yes. did their father fail her? undeniably. but depositing a check into her bank account isn't the answer to this. enjolras wants to heal her in some material sort of way, and that just isn't possible. all he can do is be her brother.

so, i had to take enjolras to that place. i had to make him obsess over "paying for his father's sins." i had to make him stressing himself out over the money. i had to make him love cosette without understanding it. and i had to make him terrible.

i love making enjolras terrible, i won't lie. a lot of the time when i'm writing, i like to see how terrible i can make him without alienating him completely from the reader. when i was trying to decide what line from this chapter to use as the summary, i sent a few options to my friend cossette, who read an earlier draft of this fic. she chose the line about him being "capable of being truly terrible" for me, because she said that was kind of the whole thing i was going for.

and it was! for him to be able to say the things he says in this chapter — from telling cosette "Look what he did to you!" to him saying to grantaire "Your chest is even emptier than mine. All you have is an empty bottle and a half-assed joke." he HAS to be terrible. these are terrible things to say!

unfortunately, i think they're also very human things to say. i joke a lot about how much i enjoy making characters say the worst possible things to each other, but it's true. i love doing it. because i think it's so tragically human. especially when you're saying these things to a person that you love. it's easy to hurt the people we love, because we know them well enough to know just where to hit them.

when enjolras hurts cosette, it's mostly by accident. he is coming from a good place, but going all about it wrong. when he hurts grantaire, it is with intent. he and grantaire have spent years hurting each other. when enjolras finds himself falling after fighting with cosette, it's too easy for him to cling to the closest familiar thing: fighting with grantaire.

building up to the fight with grantaire was a different beast. whereas the argument with cosette is borne from misguided ideas of justice, the fight with grantaire is entirely personal. as i was writing deep end, i had to write an enjolras and a grantaire who could come to this place, in very different ways. enjolras had to find himself leaning on grantaire; he had to be in more pain than anyone realized, including himself; he had to be terrible. grantaire, in contrast, had to have some amount of self control; he had to be someone who could be leaned on; he had to be able to walk away. the grantaire we meet in chapter 1 meets very little of these requirements. his development is just as important as enjolras', even if he isn't the main focus.

this answer is, as predicted, much much longer than i intended so i will wrap things up. when writing longform fic, i tend to start with the worst thing and work my way outwards from there. these two scenes are the worst things. because i knew where he was going, i knew while i was writing that i had to shape and enjolras who would find himself saying and doing the worst things he could. that's why he's cruel to grantaire in the first few chapters, why he finds himself arguing with grantaire despite knowing better, why he constantly finds himself self-destructing. i always tell everyone that deep end is about enjolras beating the marble statue allegations, and that's never truer than it is in chapter 18.

Greetings and salutations! I'm trying to get a friend of mine to listen to Monstrous Agonies. At my recommendation, he listened to the "A Densely Woven Tapestry of Fiction" bonus episode a few weeks ago and greatly enjoyed it, and I'm now deciding which other episodes I should suggest to give him a taste of the feel of the podcast and how it works. Which brings me to my questions:

Do you remember the episode numbers for the murder train letter, the letter about the long-lived couple who were trying to decide what to do with their vast collection of personal erotica, and the letter from the individual who was fully isolated but listened in to the podcast (I believe they were in a forest, but I'm not certain)?

Do you have any (spoiler-free) episodes that you would suggest to a person who's trying to get a sense of MA, and/or ones that you're especially proud of? Bonus points if they have nerd stuff, puns, and/or heart-wrenching voice acting.

My go-to recommendations for getting an idea of the show are Episode Nineteen (ethical mimic ownership and husband in the Wild Hunt); Episode Fifteen (discovering someone thinks of you as their nemesis, and accidentally falling through time after a workplace accident); and Episode Sixty (cosmic horror from beyond the universe considers starting a Physics PhD, and cryptid boyfriend is offended when partner says he isn't really famous).

Anyone else got any they'd suggest for someone just getting into the show?
