I'm not sure where the entire 'wendigo is a taboo word' thing even came from. I've actually read stories from like They Knew Both Sides of Medicine that discuss the influence of windigoag without this kind of internet-borne stigma against merely saying the word.
The book is an authentic Nehiyaw account of the windigo story (of course, Cree/Potawatomi/Ojibwe accounts of the windigo will differ) but it seems like some kind of weird spread of misinformation is going on.
Tumblr media
Like it's not even tabooed or euphemized in the original text, it's just straight up there, wīhtikowa.
This 100%
I'm going to be honest and put my tinfoil hat on here real quick, I'm starting to think the whole 'saying it is taboo and will make it come getcha' may have originated from the Europeans attempting to prevent us from speaking our language and telling our stories because it's really effective at helping to eradicate accurate tribal mythology. Only ever hear that shit from non-natives.
I know some tribes/superstitions do think if you go around thinking or saying the name of an evil entity it will summon it, but, for one, this is still a child's superstition intended to keep your thoughts from being too negative and for two the mainstream words aren't even the *original* true names of the entities
It is apparently really commonly believed on Tumblr that if you see someone say wendigo you should go bother them and tell them it's offensive now. Fucking wild...

could you maybe when you have free time do a wendigo!shigaraki fic?  👉👈🥺
Of course, I love you annon >○<
I'll do the cree mythology route in which the wendigo possess the person. So Shigaraki has his normal appearance (save for a few features that look sunken in or lankier then a human should be)

Your least favourite part of the annual camping trips your family took was that it was in the middle of bumfuck nowhere. Why couldn't they do that fancy camping with bathrooms inside the RVs? They just had to be adventurous. And now you found yourself in the dark woods lost. Your lazy brother refused to get the fire wood and the task was then delegated to you. Eventually you got all turned around and the sun set, leaving you all alone in the woods. A tank top and sweats on, leaving you to the elements, shivering as the cool air pricked at your skin. The night was deadly silent, the only sound being the crunching of leaves beneath your feet.
Until it wasn't.
A cry broke through the air, echoing throughout the forest. Startiling you and causing you to drop the firewood you had collected. Tears brimmed your eyes as the harsh reality set in. You were lost in the woods. All alone. Completely hopeless until daytime.
Another cry sliced through the night but it sounded more human than the last. Like a man. Screaming for help?
You held your breath, heart pounding in your chest waiting for another.
"Help me please!"
There it was again! You knew better. Better than to go running to a man screaming for help in the woods. This was how girls got kidnapped and killed by rednecks in the hills. But you were lost. Maybe that man needed genuine help! He might have been just as lost as you.
Letting go of your inhabitions and the disgusting feeling churning in your gut - screaming at you to stay put - you went off in the direction of the crys for help.
When you finally made it to the source of the noise, no one was there. It was just a large clearing, with barely any visibility due to the lack of light. Your heart rate picked up. You could have sworn you heard someone screaming for help! You couldn't stop the sob that escaped the back of your throat. You were terrified! You just wanted to go back home!
"Such a cute little thing, crying already and the worst hasn't even happend to you." Your blood frooze as you heard the mans voice speak behind you. Now much less distressed but scratchy and deep. You swallowed down the bile rising in your throat, squeezing your eyes shut, chest heaving.
You turn around, your entire body shaking as tears run down your cheeks. Eyes meeting with glowing red ones. It looked like a normal guy.
At first glance.
Through teary eyes you could see pale, almost ashen looking skin. Eyes slightly sunken in. Limbs looking a bit lanky, too much for a average human. But it still resembled a man. Pale blue shaggy hair drapped over his eyes, hoodie on - although seemingly torn past repair - and a hand reached up scratching at his neck.
"You look fucking delicious, pretty thing like you out here...fuckkkk you're gonna taste amazing, girls like you are always the sweetest tasting. Lucky thing you're dumb too, lured you out real nice and easy."
You choke on a sob. What was he talking about!? A sob ripped through your body when he suddenly grabbed you, slamming you roughly against a near tree. Despite your best efforts to scream and kick he held you down, nails digging into your flesh, drawing scarlet red out. His incisors biting down viciously into your neck causing a scream to rip through your throat as you thrashed around, trying to rip him off.
"Fuckin- ugh stay still, I wanna play with my food a little bit before I dig in, just lay there and take it, yeah?"
"Get off me!" Your voice now hoarse as you scream. You hear the fabric ripping before you feel the cool air hitting your legs. He holds you down while he rips off the flimsy lace of your panties. You try to scream but his hand covers your mouth as he shoves his cock into you. Tears ran down your cheeks, the painful intrusion shooting through you. Your cunt split open on his fat cock, the tip dragging against your gummy walls.
In the same instance, you feel his teeth bite down on your arm, taking a chunk of your flesh. The feeling of warm blood seeping down your skin.
Helping people never got you anywhere, did it?

Supernatural Au
Bruce is a hunter looking for the demon who killed his parents. Clark is the angel of the Lord sent from heaven to protect the Right Man.
Bruce doesn't want the angel's protection, and Clark experiences too much human emotion in contact with Bruce. But Bruce is much more than the Right Man. He will be the reason for Clark's Fall.
Oo! I raise you this tho; Bruce runs an orphanage for little supernatural babies and Clark "hunts" down parents for them. They've been friends for years, dancing around eachother, oblivious to loving stares and longing looks. But the kids certainly aren't.

Thanks again for responding to my previous ask. I have a couple of additional questions about native folklore more broadly if you don't mind.
1. With the understanding that obviously the best sources are going to be firsthand retellings, are there any particular collections or works you are familiar with that you feel do a pretty good job of accurately presenting these stories that you would recommend?
2. Seeing as the Wendigo is sort of an outlier in terms of popularity, are there stories of other specific creatures/spirits that you wish people were more familiar with?
3. Okay, this one is actually unrelated, but I love the way you use bold, dark lines in a lot of your art. Are there any specific artists that you would say have helped inspire your current style ?
Certainly! Thanks again for your curiosity. I'll do my best here.
A few people have asked me about this film already but I do stand by that it is the best film about the wendigo I've ever seen personally, Ravenous (1999). Incidentally despite people admonishing the game for this, from what I've heard Until Dawn actually got it right. But I haven't played this game, I'm just going off how someone described it to me. A book from 2016 called Wrist is by an Anishinabe author, and it's not a 1-to-1 depiction but it's sort of a combination of more modern ideas and the Ojibwe versions. Unfortunately these are the only things I can think of. I've seen far more versions that are NOT accurate.
2. YES.
On the theme of the wendigo, I was told the story of Winter Snow. I don't think there's any media for this, but the gist of it is, two boys live with their grandmother. While they're off hunting, a stranger visits the grandmother and asks about them, waiting for them to return. When they return that night it's with a buck for their grandmother to cook. She allows the visiting stranger to stay for dinner and eat some. Then, the stranger asks to stay the entire winter, which she allows, feeling that this stranger was good luck and provided medicine (sorta 'magic') when the two boys go hunting. The stranger goes by the name Winter Snow. When spring comes, the stranger thanks the grandmother for her hospitality and leaves, and as the snow melts the next morning the grandmother hears screaming and moaning outside, where she finds her two grandsons melting, having been transformed into snow (snowmen in some versions) by the stranger.
Another popular story that could be in theme with the 'misunderstanding' of the wendigo is the Deer Woman. She sometimes is a human, sometimes a deer, and sometimes a combination of both. She's benign to children and aspiring mothers, but will sometimes steal a woman's husband only to lead them to their death or to pine from heartbreak. Some say this only happens if the husband is abusive. My family that lives in Shawnee tend to tell her stories as more of a malevolent spirit that will trample young people who are being wreckless in the woods.
We also have a character named Nanaboozhoo who is a 'hero' kind of figure, and there's a lot of legends and myths about him and his brother and grandmother. (AFAIK he never turns into a snowman though lmao)
3. Thank you, I'm very flattered! However the funny truth is that the art on this blog is NOT my current art style, it's actually pretty old now, I stopped using this blog for years because I kinda gave up posting art on social media for a bit. However I can tell you what I was inspired by still; Jamie Hewlett's work, The World Ends With You, FLCL, a strange anime film called Dead leaves (big recommend), and probably a bit of Invader Zim for good measure.

Do you think there'd be, like, other mythical creatures hiding as humans? Like Unicorns, Wendigos, Yokai- I actually have an idea about the Wendigo one now ☠️
Hirano is so cruel for how little worldbuilding we got in Hellsing
The only lore we know is about vampires, we only know a few of a werewolf's abilities, we don't know what other creatures there are, it all happened about one specific religion in less than five specific places. We don't even know how Integra runs the organization or how Alucard's seals work.
I like to think that there would be other supernatural creatures around the world, not just vampires and werewolves. In my opinion the monsters should correlate with the place's local folklore (ie, yokai in Japan or wendigo in North America).
I love exploring culture and folklore so if Hirano ever said there's only goth bloodsuckers and furries in the Hellsing verse, I'd be so fucking mad

thoughts on kaneko’s wendigo / wendigos in general? its interesting when a mythological idea becomes so pop culture telephoned it basically loses all meaning
Tumblr media
Kaneko's Wendigo is a weird little pug-faced freak. Really leans into the Yeti semiotic and the apocryphal antlers. However, he scores some points because he is obviously "raising the roof" and is probably some sort of crazy party animal.
And yeah, the Wendigo has pretty well disintegrated into the fabric of pop culture as a horror bogeyman. He's on some sort of Krampus-type beat. Ravenous is a good movie, though.

Just quick question how would wendigo OC react to mine, cupid
(TW: Blood)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Whew sorry it took me a bit! (Working on perspective)
Now for Silky she is hostile towards all wendigo oc's. Her lineage and her "mother" have made her that way and her goal is to slaughter them all to protect her friends and family.
She had fought quite a lot but her "mother" proves to be quite the hellish target. After slaining her all wendigos in her eyes now are 100% kill on sight, questions later.
So Cupid? Stay up that tree.

how do you like the designs of the wendigos in Until Dawn? Esp the remaster that came out recently. They're so creepy! I think you'd like 'em.
I had not seen them prior to this! I gotta say that it's not the traditional portrayal you're used to but they look very creepy, it's different and I fuck with it, also the graphic is really cool

Hello! I hope you don't mind more Wendigo questions. I just wanted to figure out whether a few of the elements I've encountered in certain (non-antlery) versions of the legend have any actual origins within some branch of Algonquin culture or if they are the results of people taking artistic license with it. Thank you for responding should you choose to!
1. The Wendigo is frequently presented as having some sort of affinity for ice, wind, snow, and the general trappings of winter in stories. Is this actually part of its identity in a supernaturally significant way, or is the association merely the result of food being scarcer in winter, and therefore, most Wendigo stories occur then?
2. Expanding on the first question, have you ever encountered a version of the story where the Wendigo has "tells" related to this icy nature? I have heard versions that say that those possessed by Wendigos have hearts of ice and can thus be detected because they will never come near fire, refuse to smoke, or cannot enter sweat lodges without being destroyed or exorcized, to list a few examples.
3. Some Wendigo stories feature possessed individuals displaying supernatural abilities of endurance or trickery. Have you encountered any tales that feature such individuals performing incredible feats of strength, ignoring the effects of blood, limb, or organ loss, or mimicking the faces and voices of those it has eaten or those known to and trusted by their victims?
Hello! I don't mind answering more wendi questions and I'm glad to see people so curious about the legends!
1: both are technically true, it is the case that the original stories happened to be told in winter, which in this region is notoriously very long as well. As the stories evolved many sister tribes started incorporating more ice and snow imagery. I believe it's the Cree predominantly who depict them as giants with a heart of ice. However some of the snow imagery was exaggerated by colonist renditions that made it into more of a sort of 'abominatble snow man's type of thing.
2: yes this is actually the version my grandfather would usually tell, part of the story he told me (about a group camping in the wilderness who encounter a strange man) involve the man refusing to come near the fire to warm up. Then in the night he eats several of the campers and the one surviving wakes to find a set of bare footprints in the snow that lead away and then vanish.
3: Definitely, the Wendigo stories I heard growing up always involved superhuman abilities and deception as well. The Wendi isn't a poor victim, once they are possessed they become cunning and ruthless.
Hope this helps!
