Anyways I'm a huge Jhariah fan and will now be thinking of every song in the context of dbhc (especially Russian Doll as Etho post-destruction).

RAHHHHHHH YES!!!!! oh my god yes absolutely all of this!!! There's so much i could freaking say about this song, and If you'll indulge me a slight ramble: i think so much of it is like, this double meaning with lyrics. Like, yes, BIG SHOT. 24 hates Xisuma so much (for some reason, later to be explored, but hinted at a little bit in the spotify wrapped art), he sneeringly calls X a bigshot, because X must think he's so big and powerful and important, but this song also feels like. almost like 24 is beating up on himself? Like, "oh, you think you're a big shot, huh? Think you're so big and strong and powerful despite how small you feel?" and that sense of fighting to overcome his sense of inadequacy and shame and anger is just SO infuriating that it fuels him even more.

Lyrics like "You're always just a bit shy, following behind" AGAIN, could totally be 24 sneering at Xisuma, because X isn't the most outwardly outgoing person, and from 24's perspective, it's like ohhhhh, you're putting up this shy guy front, you must think you're so smart! BUT ALSO. "a bit shy" as in, coming up just short of a goal, always falling short, and that as a double meaning for both 24 and Xisuma is just so. passes out. I could go on like this for like every lyric i need to eat glass OH AND!!! FIRE4FUN is actually on Cub's playlist >:3 god so many songs from the TRUST CEREMONY album are on various dbhc playlists, but primarily 24 and hels. Xisuma has one and cub has one, but that's it (i think).

have you seen Poker Face at all? it feels like it was written with columbo in mind

i have actually watched the first episode and i enjoyed it enough that i do intend to watch more.

most of the performances are solid. natasha lyonne, adrien brody, and benjamin bratt are all fantastic. the visuals are exquisite. the mystery, the premise, and the "gotcha" are all enjoyable. the ending is solid. it's decent television, all things considered.

that said, while both lyonne and creator rian johnson are great fans of the show, it...isn't columbo. i've seen people draw very close comparisons; the two shows are less similar than you might be led to believe. poker face may be a howcatchem with a protagonist who evokes the lovable dishevelment of her predecessor, but the show's writing lacks the subtlety and facility of columbo's. it is violent, vulgar, rough, and crude.

but it fills a certain niche we've been missing on television--i saw one person online so unused to this type of show that they posed the question of why charlie cale wasn't going to be solving one murder per season. so if this is the show bringing stylized monster-of-the-week serials back into fashion, i'm certainly not complaining.

So to preface this, I have watched three (3) shows in the last five years. And one of those shows I was nearly tied down to watch because I am notorious for not watching television— like I will see something interesting and instead of watching I’ll just end up reading what happens (yes it pisses everyone off sorry).

SUFFICE TO SAY, I watched Russian Doll in literally two days. The whole thing. A huge incentive is the fact it’s IN TOTAL ~16 thirty minute episodes.

And I cried(albeit I’m an easy crier). I laughed. I sat there in agony and intrigue. It hurts in such a good way it makes you rethink your own outlook on life your relationships with others and your perception of humankind, so if that’s your kinda genre I HIGHLY recommend. Idk if you’ve seen fleabag but it’s along the same line. The show has a sci-fi twist that I think is executed wonderfully and leaves you on the edge of your seat— I went in with zero clue but it was amazing. Truly.

Natasha Lyonne knocks it out of the ballpark. Like the whole cast is amazing but she lives in her role and it doesn’t even feel like we’re watching actors and actresses but rather someone’s real life.

Personally, I’ve recommended it to two people (one being the lovely @katagawajr who actually watched it on my couch with me lol) and an IRL friend (who I also recc’d fleabag to) who said “I’m never taking another recommendation from you unless I want to cry”.

I’d give it a good ol 8.9/10 and I think it shines best in season 1 but season 2 is pretty damn good!!!!!
