Trick or Treat for fandom: Something about Helena and Babs?

thank you!!!! i will share some of the au ideas i had for helbabs :) warning they're written very roughly and not at all professionally or coherently 🥲

1) college:

academic rivals, they're like the two smartest kids who always argue about the like "i got 3" "but i got 2.3636387" "bitch have you ever heard of approximation" "sorry for being hardworking i guess" "ARE YOU CALLING ME LAZY?" -- but you also get cutesy wholesome moments because i imagine they both bond over not being able to relate to the whole partying frat scene

helena ends up sitting next to babs at a quiet corner of a house party, and she starts ranting about how annoying their classmates are with casual humour as if they're close friends, and babs laughs and agrees with her rants and joins in, and that's how they become the friends of the frenemies part!

2) 1950s:

in which babs is the commissioner and helena is a mafia don. they're professional rivals by day, secret wives who are tired of each other's shit (affectionately) by night when nobody's around. there's comedy, there's tension, and there's the angst of where they wish they didn't have such a huge professional barrier in between them, but hey, what's more romantic than the thrill?

3) forced marriage or accidentally got married:

they're freaking out and blaming each other yet neither of them are actually taking the steps to, you know, reverse their marriage. i guess what happens in vegas stays in vegas!

4) fake dating:

where they both need a partner to attend this fancy wayne gala and they need to be CONVINCING. you think it's a one time thing but NO it's a huge thing now and it's just MUCH EASIER to keep up with the "facade" because... you know! 🤭

5) romeo vs juliet style rom com:

in which they live a normal life in a normal world with no superheroes or whatever, and you get a cute teacher x librarian romance going on here. but things kind of start to heat up when they get serious and it's time to start involving their parents... even though helena hails from a mafia family and babs' dad is the commissioner on their case

6) vampires!

it's basically just dc vs vampires, except what if helena was a normal, devoutly catholic human who HAD to fall for her long-term rival babs, THAT TOO AFTER SHE BECAME A VAMPIRE

I’ve been getting a lot of asks about when I will be updating certain fics or asking me to please update. I appreciate the fact that people like my stories enough to ask but the answer is always I don’t know. It takes me at least six or seven hours to write around 4k words and that’s if I like how it’s going. I am currently on my fifth rewrite of Sanity’s Last Stop Chapter 6 and third rewrite of WICYG 41. Asking doesn’t make it go faster but appreciative or nice comments/Reblogs do. I love all my stories and fully intend to keep writing for all of them but forcing myself to meet deadlines just makes it feel like work.

idk if this counts as feedback but @becomethesun (ily) caught all the foreshadowing of Ellie not being able to read in Stubborn Love and figured it out before it was revealed in the story and that is hands down one of my favorite moments as a fic writer

I have a question for Deaf folk around the world (or anyone who uses sign language really, of any variety):

When you discuss fandom in SL (eg: A book, or a movie, or a game), do you spell the name of the media in it's full? Or do you abbreviate it the way we do online (Eg: tloz for legend of zelda, istv for into the spiderverse, pjo for percy jackson and the olympians)? Or do you come up with sign names for them?

Do you spell it out full the first time (maybe using corrisponding full signs where appropriate eg the 'in' movement for into, or 'legend' in legend of zelda) then point back to that space to refer to it again? Come up with an arbitary nickname for it for every conversation/depending on the person?

How do you navigate fandom and character names in sign?

we used to have a silver otherkin star that we wore daily, but the top fixture snapped. rather than replace it, we figured the plural rings were a little more accurate for us now, anyway.

a friend ended up doing the model (albeit while we sat behind and gave feedback), we paid shapeways for the printing, for speed & just to save us the trouble of actually producing something to "daily wear" standards. would recommend.

i love and chuckled the phrasing of how you introduced this ship, lmao, because tedbabs definitely feels like a "blink and you'll miss it" pairing that a lot of people probably wouldn't even realise has been canon(ish? i guess? they did go on a date irl!) — that, or they simply don't get talked about a lot. i learned about their history when my friend who roleplays babs brought it up!

but whether this is surprising coming from me or not — i do ship tedbabs!!!!! it's one of the very few canon, especially m/f ships that make me happy. in my experience, i've seen m/f ships feel unbalanced or unconvincing or just not well written enough, especially in comics or any medium where love interests are pushed, but tedbabs is so cosy <3

i actually enjoyed their dynamic when i was reading bop, they seem to get along pretty well and respect each other, and they seem so sweet and fun. in the grand scheme of things, i'd prefer them to be wlw mlm solidarity best friends, since i would love for them both to be queer (manifesting that helbabs and boostle double date fingers crossed) and also for them to hang out again, i wouldn't mind reading more of tedbabs if that wholesome dynamic stays :) regardless, ted and barbara respectively will always have a special place in my heart
