Lyrically Speaking

The song "Dying Star" by Ashnikko is the last track on her album WEEDKILLER, which is based on a short story of the same name. The lyrics tell the story of Aster, a young woman who escapes from a dying planet that was ruled by a tyrant who exploited her magic. She finds a new home on a lush and peaceful planet, where she meets a kind and gentle woman who heals her wounds and makes her feel loved.

'The people who have been unkind to me have made me unkind, but, ultimately, I just want a soft place to land, and that’s exactly what this song is about, pulling those thorns of the Weedkiller out one by one and looking for someone to take me in.'

The song celebrates Ashnikko’s resilience and empowerment as she overcomes her challenges and finds happiness in herself and her partner. It also expresses her hope for a better world where people can live in harmony with nature and each other.

Eli and Liz (okay mostly Liz but her enthusiasm is infectious) have recently been alerted to the existence of competitive karaoke and also the fact that it's apparently very popular here. One day they were just at the kitchen table with tea and coffee and Liz slammed her hand down and said "KARAOKE TEAM" so that's what they've been working on.

It was all fine and well until they tapped out all their resources and asked me to join them. I had figured this would be a thing that Eli would do without me and I was fine with it. A little less fine to have to sing in front of people, I only do the Christmas pageant every year because it's for charity.

So the part of me that craves chaos entered into a state of malicious compliance when they asked me for a list of songs I'd want to do, should I happen to be roped into this activity.

They were both across from me and I felt like I was at a job interview, sliding my resume across the table for them to look at. Eli immediately raises an eyebrow but also gives a little lopsided smile and says:

"It's an awful lot of BTS so far."

Liz leans into him and taps his arm. "To be fair, yours was a lot of Harry Styles."

He doesn't stop smiling. "Harry's House is a great album and I'll take no argument about that. You asked for crowd pleasers and that's what I gave you."

"You're right."

This list is stuff neither of them listen to. It's really just my "Kitchen Dance Party Mix", built for morale at the bakery, lovingly crafted to keep us awake, marginally happy, and on our feet for 12+ hours. There's Beyonce, Lizzo, Cardi B, Spice Girls, Ashnikko, Goldfrapp, etc and yeah, a whole lot of BTS.

Liz asks me, "you speak Korean? At least as much as they speak English?"

"Hooooo no, much much less. But I've got it phonetically if that makes you feel better."

Eli taps the paper twice and slides it back. I expect him to say no thank you so I'm off the hook. But he's also winking at me so it's anyone's guess what he'll say or do next.

"I think I'd like to see you be a whole boy band. Let's do it."

Fuuuuuck.

About my project

Hello, today I would like to write about my project. I will be explaining how I am going to analyze my primary sources and talk about the time frame that I will be using. I will also write about some difficulties that I am encountering.

For my project I will be focusing on the Artist Ashnikko as a rapper. My main question is : How does sexualization plays a key role in Ashnikko’s music ?

To approach this question I will analyze three different types of primary sources : Songs, Interviews and public reaction to Ashnikko’s songs. When analyzing the songs I chose, I will be focusing on sexualization of Ashnikko in the lyrics and music videos. I will analyze how the singer is portrayed and what is the purpose of sexualization in different songs. To help me with this last point I will be using interviews of the rapper where they talk about their songs. I’ll be also analyzing one specific video where Ashnikko shows their songs to their grandparents (why did they decide to show their music videos specifically to their grandparents, why does it matters ?). And lastly, Tikotk, Twitter and Reddit posts and comments reacting on Ashnikko’s songs will help me analyze the effects sexualization has and what it brings to their songs.

The time frame I chose for my project is between 2018 and 2022. Ashnikko started releasing songs on 2018 but only became more famous in 2019. However, I will be making references to an earlier time period as my subject is connected to the evolution of rap and the evolution of the place of Women in rap. I believe my analysis would only be more relevant if i compare Ashnikko’s song to other artists or time period in rap. This leads me to one of the difficulties I’m facing.

I’m having some difficulties finding proper secondary sources. For my project, I wanted to integrate the theory of the male gaze and analysis of « gender roles in Rap Music » in my analysis. I believe that reading about those two themes would have helped me a lot- Unfortunately I can’t find much free articles or books about them, neither in the library or on the web. I will continue my researches but if you have read good books or articles about those subjects I’d be grateful if you could share them with me.

A last thing I’d like to address is about Ashnikko gender identity. I recently learned that Ashnikko identifies as genderfluid. Since my project was first dealing with women in Rap music, this might come as a problem. However since Ashnikko feels comfortable in their female body and support feminist causes I feel like I can still bound their songs to women in Rap music. I’d really like to hear your opinion on this !

MY YEAR IN REVIEW - 2023

Well what a year its been, a glorious hot summer, festivals, shooting exclusively for Ashnikko, and a few bucket lists ticked off.

Shooting a few rock bands at Lytham Festival (Motley Crue and Def Leppard) and discovering some great new bands at Neighbourhood Festival (CMAT and Picture Parlour).

My favourite photos this year were featured in an article on Louder Than War here:

Milky Way from Wargasm is my ultimate favourite gig shot of the year - I took this after I had done my favourite list. I have entered this into the EPAs photo competition. I love the back lighting on her hair as it flares up just at the right moment, the way the edge of her coat is tinged blue by the lighting. BOOM!

As the year ends, I’d like to thank the people who have been supportive, whether it be a like, a chat, a comment or a retweet. Thanks to the photographers who have shared the pit with me and shared laughs and moans and to the reviewers who have complimented my photos with their beautiful words.

It’s been 15 years since I leapt into the music business with Mudkiss Fanzine. It's 8 years since I started to shoot for academy music group as a house photographer and 10 years louder than war It’s been another memorable year in the pit.

And a thanks to the PR + artists who made it possible to get into shows in the first place. My favourite show of the year to watch was Pink in Bolton - just spectacular. This year's top highlights have been getting interviewed and photographed for the Observer and Guardian on reaching 60 and still using the punk DIY spirit and having a photo shoot with the great photographer Perou. I was delighted to have won a one-off Marilyn Monroe hand-painted jacket by Dave Sharp 2024 has some promising shows lined up (of course pending accreditation). I've also been asked to do a talk/interview in March 2024 and I have entered a photo competition for the first time ever - wish me luck. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Yea very this. She’s just a female harry styles. Dumb people love to praise them both as queer icons when all they both do is profit from queer culture while retaining this false ambiguity about their sexuality. All the videos I see of ‘gaylor’ are her literally just like, her complimenting or checking out a female interviewer. Meanwhile there are so many actual gay and lesbian artists that don’t hide their sexuality at all that you should be listening to. Examples:

Now hear me out--For this song, I was thinking specifically in the context after Charlie’s disastrous interview in the pilot episode. After effectively humiliating herself, I can only imagine she wished she hadn’t said anything at all then maybe things would be different. As such, I’m sure she’s felt this way about a lot situations in her past where she embarrassed herself or wished she just hadn’t spoke and maybe she wouldn’t be the laughingstock of Hell.

I feel like this pretty self-explanatory lol. Vaggie has gotten unwanted attention by gross men all her life--especially when she worked as a stripper. This is basically her inner thoughts about men who think they’re entitled to her body and she has no problem voicing these thoughts.

Now this song is pretty much a representation of Agent Two’s mental state after the Truth Seekers episode. Despite her insistence that was fine after Stolas possessed she never fully recovered. Two suffers from insomnia and constantly hearing voices in her head. She can’t help but think that she’s slowly going insane.
