Aether Chapter 15
It's an action chapter! Or more like the emergency after action chapter.
Maggie noticed the emergency response team getting the battle mechs ready, but then basically everyone was on recovery and there were no mentions of the mechs being used to help. We got a Rachel cameo as she helped hold up building parts, but didn't get mechs doing shit. I suppose thats fine because although there were 200+ meta acting as first responders I don't think we got specific mentions of like... Industry and Nexus, maybe there is still an active conflict somewhere that Maggie isn't aware of.
But then that doesn't make sense because the mechs rank below basically every combat ready meta/non-human. If the choice is fight alongside mechs while dragons do relief work, or have mechs on relief work while you fight alongside dragons, you send the dragons into the fight!
Chance is gonna go fucking nuts when they see this attack happened. Last time there was an explosion in this city they turned on push notifications on Maggie's phone until she got in touch. What do you reckon they'll do when the place she told them she worked to reassure them that she was fine has been bombed or something? Lowkey surprised we didn't have Naomi there awkwardly being like "Weird question but do you use Digilife and if so if your handle Bobbie? Yeah? Cool, hold this bluetooth speaker?"
You just know Praetorian is gonna try raise some kind of fuss about Maggie not being registered for hero work yet being at an emergency scene. At least in the moment Barker is there able to make him curb his bullshit to focus on the work.
The work that Maggie sets to VERY efficiently. No freezing up, no hesitating, just clear communication and focus on her tasks. She even volunteers to do some final sweeps before things start winding down, which leads to the most important part of the chapter:
MAXINE!
My heart was in my throat the entire time she was "teleporting" with the cat because we haven't seen her transport living tissue yet, and instead of a tragic dead kitten we get a haughty talking cat!
Fantastic. Excellent curve ball. Even Ashley was asking what the fuck.

One of my favourite things Once Upon A Time did was skew fairytale, myths, fables, and folklore. This isn't new or even remotely groumdbreaking, especially because the entire premise was adapting these stories. But I like how they did it and how much attention they paid to other retellings and, in a manner of speaking, validated those retellings and interpretations.
By this, I mean, how the writers have harnessed the story world Author plot and storybook existence and shown how in a few oral retellings or translations the gist of the story that we as an audience (and Emma in the story world) know has the bones of autobiographical truth but misses a few crucial details.
I could talk all day about retellings of snow white and Cinderella and Red Riding Hood that the writers of OUaT pay homage to (Red as the Wolf is no where close to being a new take but God they do it well). And then even changing the stories in a way that matches what they do with retellings in a novel way (Regina as the Ursula from Disney anyone? meaning the "real" Ursula can be anyone at all because this audience doesn't actually know Ursula) which serves in the same manner as their nods to existing appropriations and adaptations.
But I think, for me at least, how well they do this in their character of Captain Hook, a literary figure with near nothing specific tying him down and 101 readings because academicians and creatives alike have no consensus on what the hell Barrie was on about.
And from these little glimpses and subtle nods to retellings you can see how the story might have been twisted from autobiographical truth to some of the adaptations we know to the source texts. For example,
1. Hook as the original lost boy - a popular theory in adaptations. We see Killian and Liam in Neverland when he is barely an adult and still naive (sort of) and hopeful, long before his revenge days.
2. Hook as a symbol of adulthood, maturity and aging - for those who read Barrie as an allegory for children rallying against growing up and the only adult cast as a symbol of that, this guy is 300 years old.
3. Hook as the villain - sure thing.
4. Hook as fighting the tyrannical Pan - guess what? We've got that too.
5. Hook as rescuing Lost Boys - got that.
6. Hook as the guy kidnapping or otherwise delivering Pan lost boys - you'll never believe it.
7. It's an Crocodile that takes his hand - Hook calls the guy that took his hand that he's afraid of and hates with a passion a Crocodile.
8. Hook is Pan and vice versa, one grew up to be the other - not quite that. But we have a close enough story in 2 ways - pan/Malcolm and pan/henry.
9. Hook is Peter's father - again, a close enough story is provided that could easily be misremembered a few generations down or mistranslated a few times. Peter is Rumples father.
10. Hook wears red and has a perm - and I really do love this. They drop Blackbeard (the Treasure Island character that Hook was based on [so there's an even better nuance there too, not just in story world building but a nice nod to canon that their story world plot of misappropriations of the oral tradition of bedtime stories and generational stories is entirely feasable]) in Neverland looking exactly like Disney's Hook. Indicating that 'hey a pirate that looks like that is in neverland and well, there's only one of those in the story so it must be Hook' happened at some point.
I'll never get over how good they did that in story plot device of we're an appropriation, but our story is about this one source book existing that's a hundred percent accurate although it doesn't have all the details and somehow this realm is a bit mixed up on the facts.

ROUND 1D, MATCH 4 OUT OF 16!
Propaganda Under the Cut:
Into the Woods:
The embodiment of "Aren't you tired of being nice? Don't you just want to go apeshit?" but then she eventually decides that even if she's tired of being nice it's still worthwhile to try, and that doesn't mean she had to let people walk all over her
Her story is so fascinating, and she feels more realistic than other depictions of Cinderella. Most ItW characters have some fatal flaw- hers is her indecisiveness. After she goes to the ball, it isnât a spell ending at midnight causing her to leave- itâs her fear of being discovered as a peasant. But the Prince loves her, so should she stay? But what would he do if she finds out sheâs poor? But what if he wants that in a wife? But she wouldnât fit in. But how would she know if she fits in if she doesnât know who she is? This dilemma is what leads to her leaving her shoe on the steps of the palace and seeing if he comes back for her. But we know this story, she gets with the Prince and they live happily ever after⌠until act 2. The tree marking her motherâs grave has fallen down due to a rampaging giant, and she goes to mourn the loss of it. While sheâs there, she learns of heartbreaking news- her husband cheated on her. Now this could lead to another example of her indecisiveness, but by now sheâs grown from her last venture into the woods. She knows exactly what she needs to do and how to do it. She meets up with her companions from act 1 and comes up with a plan to kill the giant. But before this, she notices one member of the group, Little Red Riding Hood, is looking gloomy. The girlâs mother and granny had died due to the wrath of the giant, and sheâs questioning her morality because sheâs about to kill somebody. Cinderella, who knows about losing a mother, comforts her with the heartwrenching No One Is Alone, where she assures Red that there will always be someone looking out for her. She then runs into the Prince, and she confronts him on his infidelity. She is given the option to return to her marriage with him, but she denies and tells him to consider her âa victim of the giant.â After the giant is defeated, she moves in the with other survivors of the attack and helps our main character the Baker raise his newborn baby, as well as take care of Red and Jack. I wouldnât consider anybody in ItW a good person- grey morality is a major theme in the show, after all- but out of the main cast, Cinderella is easily the most moral. Also she feels super aromantic so we love that for her too.
Into the woods is an incredible deconstruction of fairytales in general, and her arc is my favorite. Her story focuses on being a damsel because she doesnât know what she wants. She even purposely leaves her shoe so she doesnât have to choose if the prince finds her. The show ends with her realizing that she has to have agency even if the choices she makes might be bad because thatâs just part of being an adult. Also she has great songs.
SHE JUST WANTS A FUN NIGHT OUT, NONE OF THIS SUDDEN QUEENLY RESPONSIBILITY!
in this version she intentionally leaves behind the shoe because she's indecisive over whether she wants to stay at home which is familiar but horrible or go with the prince to the palace which is a whole new world for her she isn't used to at all and doesn't feel like she belongs. by leaving the shoe behind she makes it the prince's choice instead. but after she does marry him she still finds herself rather unhappy especially considering her prince is unfaithful and just all around sucks. by the end she decides to move in with a baker after leaving the prince finally finding the in between she was looking for. it's a really interesting take on her imo.
Okay we all know the movie adaptation is garbage but hear me out: I think that Anna Kendrick does a really good job of portraying her in the movie. Sheâs not nearly as bad as the Baker who was played by James fucking Cordon. With what sheâs given, she does a really good job of portraying this version of Cinderella, who to me feels like a lost child that now as an adult is trying to figure out her place in the world. Sheâs indecisive but she wasnât given the same tools in life as others to become that more confident and strong version of herself, which she finally is able to do by the end.
SHES SILLY!!! i had a huge essay but i realize now that i should probably save it for it's own post so here's a shortened version: -A huge part of her character arc revolves around realizing the prince is an asshole and she wasn't actually in love with him, but an idea of him (she's so comphet lesbian coded) -She can talk to birds and they do favors for her, but people think it's weird -She actually sometimes enjoys cleaning, when her step family isn't forcing her to do it. -Has multiple bangers, the first being On The Steps of The Palace where she basically goes "hm i think my life would be much easier and greatly improved if i just let other people decide my future for me" (aka leaving her shoe on the palace steps and letting fate decide if the prince finds her or not). The second is No One Is Alone, where she has what I would argue is one of the best solos in the entire show -Overall I think she's a really layered adaptation of Cinderella that seems like the standard kind no personality princess but is actually a really good study on romance and getting what you want and also shes a huge girlfail and we love her for that <3 ok bye Girlypop's husband cheats on her with the Baker's Wife and is told this by birds. That entire sentence is just batshit and no other Cinderella version has this. Not to mention the keep the step-sisters being blinded by said birds
Once Upon a Time:
Look. This is Season 1 episode 4. When I still watched this show. Girl is pregnant (and I guess has been for like 28 years?!?) and in trouble now. See she is Cinderella except Rumplestiltzkin has trampled all over her story by proofing away her fairy godmother. Itâs not her fault her fairy tale was hijacked and then cast out in favor of a new Cinderella down the line.
I've only seen up to the first few episodes of season 4, but it really seems that she didn't get that much of a happy ending - or she did, and then it was ruined. In the flashbacks in the Enchanted Forest, it's revealed that he fairy godmother was killed by Rumpelstiltskin who helped her in return for her firstborn, so, after her marriage, they decide to help Snow White capture Rumpel once she's pregnant. During all of this, her husband (Thomas) goes to a well to fetch water - and then disappears. I'm currently making my way through season 4 and I have very little faith that they'll ever explain why he just disappeared. Then, in Storybrooke, she's alone, heavily pregnant, and desperate enough to steal. In the end, she's reunited with Thomas/Sean Herman and has her baby, and she's seen on a night out with Red Riding Hood and Snow White where Sean proposes, but I think the fact that her happy ending isn't as happy as people think it is fascinating. Since I've not finished watching all of them, it might be best to take someone else's propaganda, since they might know more than me.
She's an underrated Cinderella who in our world is a pregnant young woman abandoned by everyone and who tries to preserve her relationship with her boyfriend (the prince charming in their original story) who isn't sĂťre he's ready to be a father but who loves her deeply and decides to finally be the man she deserves. Also she saves her step sister from her step mother six seasons later

Hi can you tell me why there is two cinderella's and rapunzel's in ooat? is it a canon plot point or retcon? i only watched the first season.
Oooo, thank you for letting me use my rewatch knowledge to gush about this situation, nonnie!
SPOILERS AHEAD (tho I do recommend finishing the show, at least the first 6, if you ever find the time):
So, throughout the first six seasons, Cinderella (Ashley), played by Jessy Schram, had three more appearances in the universe post-season 1. One very brief one in the Pilot of Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, one in season 4 (The Snow Queen), and her final appearance in the show was in her second and last stand-alone episode in season six, The Other Shoe. Season six was about Untold Stories in the beginning and The Other Shoe details how Tremaine and Ashley's stepsister Clorinda ended up in the Land of Untold Stories and when they get back to Storybrooke, Ashley has to face off against Tremaine. The episode ends with Ashley and Clorinda happy with their respective husband and fiance, and Tremaine being punished for her actions. Therefore, the original Ella's story had a happy ending and was done.
In season seven, essentially a soft reboot of the show, Henry has graduated school and wants to discover other versions of classic stories, most importantly his own, and he ends up meeting Cinderella (now played by Dania Ramirez in a different iteration, from a different Realm) and long story short, they get married and have a kid. Her story is a lot bigger (but strangely she does barely anything in the season at the same time) than original Ella's but I could have done without her entirely. Dania Ramirez did her best but they didn't give her much and I would have rather they made Henry's girlfriend from earlier seasons his wife.
Now Rapunzel (played by Alexandra Metz originally) had one stand-alone episode in season 3 (The Tower), which mostly deviated from the Tangled movie and the original story but still had Rapunzel reunite with her parents again. The Tower was original Rapunzel's one and only appearance in the show.
Now, season seven Rapunzel is a whole other monster. I absolutely despise the direction they took with the character in this new iteration and let me explain why. Her first appearance this season is in the episode entitely "Eloise Gardener", where Meegan Warner plays a much more Tangled version of the character. However, at the end of the episode it is revealed that Rapunzel is not Rapunzel at all and that she is actually Mother Gothel, who pretended to be her to get Wish Realm Hook to impregnate her so she could escape the tower she got locked in and leave her daughter (Wish Realm Alice in Wonderland) to take her place. Real Rapunzel comes back in two episodes later (One Little Tear) and in this episode it is revealed that Rapunzel was actually Lady Tremaine the whole time. She was locked in the tower for stealing vegetables from Gothel, leaving behind her husband and two daughters for years. When she manages to escape from the tower and returns home (guided by the lanterns), she finds her husband remarried to Ella's mother and her younger daughter, Drizella, estranged from her. They all try to make it work for a while but it doesn't for Rapunzel, so she ends up cursing her husband and Ella's mother's hearts which has Ella's mother flee to Wonderland where she is killed by the Jabberwocky and Tremaine ends up killing her husband after Anastasia breaks through ice and Gothel has to preserve her last breath (and therefore her body). Rapunzel is the one who locked Gothel in the tower after Gothel manipulated her into getting rid of Ella's mother and Anastasia's accident.
Present day curse has Victoria (Tremaine) try everything to revive Anastasia as she did in the other realm too and still hating Drizella for being estranged from her all those years ago. Drizella has been playing her own game all along and cursed everyone to Seattle. In the end, Victoria is killed in a sacrifice to revive Lucy (Henry and Ella's daughter) and mother and daughter sort of make up but it's a dumb ending to a dumb plot twist all around.

Aether Chapter 14
Cape Town definitely lived up to expectations on cool factor. Dutch and Rhonda are absolutely delightful and something about hearing that Dutch had previously been on a MERT before becoming a bouncer just kinda put me in mind of the Love and Luck podcast and the dry bar within it. So that was a fun moment of association for me.
I was very excited when Maggie noticed a welsh dragon emblem. Ofc Eurion has their own booth at the non-human bar and good thing too it seems.
It was immediately and immensely satisfying to watch Praetorian almost shit himself when she walked up. He is every bit the kind of dickhead you would expect of a guy who would rather stand by corrupt "heroes" than the person who called them out on their shit, which implies to me a certain level of entitlement based on his status as hero. I'm wiling to bet that if he stopped reaping a certain level of rewards and recognition for being a hero he'd go directly to supervillainy. Dude gives vibes somewhere between Gotham Cop and Homelander Fanboy. Also the way he walked up and leered over the table gave me big Garrett energy. Not enough to go full red string conspiracy theorist but some thoughts were definitely thunk.
Also it feels shady as fuck that he is so concerned with the High Guard's roster. Most generously he's just gonna go whine to the DMA about want a fair share of new resources, but I don't have that kind of trust in my heart to spare for this asshole. Dude has some shady side hustle going on that unexpected changes in the High Guard's roster might fuck up.
Eurion either went REALLY easy on Maggie this evening or she's finally getting used to talking to humans again. Even when the topic of wives was brought up she didn't propose once to either Varsha or Maggie. Maybe she has someone in mind now? Maybe she just feels like she's on thin ice with Ashley's other friends based on how Hannah acts and didn't want to risk having another high guard member being jealous of her?
Varsha, Eurion, and me are all on the same page about Ashley is definitely determined to make herself miserable. I wonder if she's been keeping up with her anti-depressants? She definitely seems like she needs to talk with someone, ideally a professional, about her hesitance to go for a relationship that she and the other person both want.
I was right! Varsha would have preferred never having unlocked her powers. She's just found a way to make it work for her.
Maggie asked that classic "Do you think I'm selfish for not wanting to be a hero?" question that kind makes it look like SHE thinks she might be selfish for not helping. Varsha is as I've come to expect very compassionate and kind in explaining that no she wouldn't be being selfish if she decided not to be a hero. I think its an interesting conversation to be having in a setting where one of the owners of the place retired from being a hero to run a club instead. There is no judgement or even consideration of that fact on Maggie's part which is part of what makes me think its HER feeling that not being a hero with her gifts would be a negative thing.
Who the FUCK is Tux?!
Is that "everyone is a bit in love with Tux" comment gonna prove to be true? Will I love Tux?
Also I have questions for the cape chaser Varsha points out to Maggie. I don't doubt that Maggie is hot, I've seen the cover, but if she is indeed some sort of cape chaser as Varsha asserts, then why is she eying off Maggie and not Delta V? Was Maggie just doing it for her, or was she hoping to be able to say she fucked a new high guard member before it was cool?
MAGGIE WAS SO FUCKING SMOOTH ASKING VARSHA TO DANCE!
I love it.
I do not love the blaring sirens right as things were winding up to dance floor make outs.
For someone who doesn't want to be a super hero Maggie had NO hesitation agreeing to get Delta V's go bag and meet her at the scene of an emergency instead of just going back and using a radio to relay that one of the other heroes should grab it on the way out. I look forward to seeing how that plays out.

I would love to read fanfics about other characters of OUAT because, especially in first season, there are many characters I like and I would like to know what happens with them, but we know nothing.
I love Nova and Grumpy, and I would like to know more about Abigail and Frederick, or about Hansel, Gretel and their father... or even Ella, Thomas and Alex, even when of them we know a little more...
I think that some of them could have appeared more in the series, and not always the same six.
Like, for example, the queen of darkness arc. I would love to see more about Aurora and Phillip, or Ariel and Eric on it. Or the plot with Ella in s6 could be longer. I would have preferred that to the evil queen again. I always feel that they told us so little about the untold stories when there were a lot of people there.
