Ballad: Namonaki Koi no Uta (2009)

At present day, a boy named Shinichi (Akashi Takei) struggles in life as he is bullied in school and his parents are always arguing at home. He loves reading history as it's his way of escaping reality and often prays at a nearby ancient tree for courage to be strong in life.

One day, he discovers a hidden scroll buried beneath the tree and finds himself transported back in time to Sengoku Jidai, where he met the fearsome Samurai, Matabe (Tsuyoshi Kusanagi) and the fiery princess, Renheme (Yui Aragaki), whom he serves.

Shinichi is surprised to see the princess to be the same person he often dreams of and Matabe is mystified by Shinichi's arrival which saved him from an assassination attempt, believed to be the work of a rival Daimyo, Ohkura (Takao Osawa).

Shinichi later learns that Ohkura wanted to marry Renheme but she refuses as her heart is already with Matabe. Both Matabe and Renheme are torn between their love for each other and their duty to their province, which they have both sworn to protect.

As Shinichi is caught up in the inevitable war, figuring out his purpose in being sent to this timeline, he gets close to both Renheme and Matabe, and the people around them, he learns what it truly means to be courageous, to not run away and face life boldly.

This was a pleasant find, as I have been intrigued by "time travel" shows where the lead travels to the past to escape the present but only to learn about life, like Samurai Sensei, Ashi Girl, Junihitoe wo Kita Akuma, Iine! Hikaru Genji-kun, Edomoiselle and Honnoji Hotel.

It's an uplifting and inspiring film, which also pulls your heartstrings.

hello! it's been so long since i've received an inbox, so thank you! if you've not read any from this rec i've once shared, i still highly recommend them, especially Ballroom e Youkoso and Namida Ame to Serenade!

first one would definitely be Kaze Hikaru, my top read this year and is now one of my all-time favourites. it's a historical shoujo manga which chronicles accurate events during the fractured Bakumatsu Era and tells it so patiently; it doesn't redact the cruelties and how barbaric it gets at that era. it's also about debunking patriarchal gender roles through Sei (the lead female character). one of the best slow burn romance out there, too!!! it's criminally undervalued so please check it out! the only way to find out is to get yourself into it, you'll be reeled in by how amazing the mangaka recounts historical events, if you are familiar with the Shinsengumi this is right up your alley. the downside to this is VIZ only releases one volume annually so it'll take more than a decade to complete it, but don't let it faze you because you'll miss out on a wonderful manga, it's not perfect, but it's wonderful. following Kaze Hikaru would be Ashi Girl, josei manga. if you end up loving KH, you will like this one as well. unlike KH which has a more serious tone & historical accuracy to it, Ashi Girl is a concoction of romance & comedy and a bit of historical manipulation through time traveling. it's overall just an endearing read!

next up is Ano Ko no Kodomo, a shoujo manga about teenage pregnancy. one of the strongest first volumes i have ever encountered. the realities of unplanned teenage pregnancies, the inner strife and the guilt that comes with deciding whether to get an abortion or to keep it, in fear of parental disappointment. it's amazing.

kobato by CLAMP. need i say more! also watch the anime, it's really good! Patience as a form of love. i will wait for you & my feelings will remain the same, if not burgeoning… how selfless & kind love can get…

medalist, a sports manga about ice skating! if you love BEY you will 101% adore this. truly wonderful! inori and tsukasa have the warmest mentor-mentee relationship; to have a burning passion for such a difficult and competitive, expensive sport, and to have an adult to rely on, and to look up to through it all, someone who reignites hope & passion for you and someone you can trust in, hold onto to keep going. wonderful art!!!!!

Umi ga Hashiru End Roll - 65 yo pursuing film. it's never too late to do something you love, finding your passion

Go with the Clouds, North-by-Northwest - mystery, mesmerizing art with gripping storytelling.

Kaika Apartment - mystery. characters mired in constant grief, reside with them their different stories of how they live through it. amazing.

blue - yuri. multifaceted effects of heteronormativity and internalised homophobia. wonderful short read

double - bl, explores the complexities of an imbalance relationship weighed down by codependency. colourful take on the concept of one's lack of individuality which can be anchored down & wrapped around by someone else’s perception.

A Female and an African Ashigaru who respect each other.

Ashi Girl (Ep 2)

Yuinosuke (Yuina Kuroshima) is a Ashigaru (foot soldier) who wishes to serve the Lord and prove her worth by winning a race against a rival Clan.

Akumaru (Max) is the Ashigaru of the rival clan who is her competitor. His master wants him to win by any means necessary, even by cheating.

But Akumaru refuses to cheat as he respects his competitor as being earnest. His honourable attitude earns the respect of Yuinosuke. 

This is what Netflix’s Yasuke should’ve been. It would’ve been interesting to focus on the relationship between Yasuke and Natsumaru.

It doesn’t have to be anything romantic. A relationship can be based on mutual respect like in the film, The Great Wall between William and Lin Mae.
