Treecko's introduction in the Eldritch Ash au is kind of funny because technically Ash can heal the tree but his healing powers have side-effects so he has to show Treecko and his family some pictures of Charizard's progression from when they first met so they're aware that if he brings their tree back it'll end up really creepy looking and probably have some weird supernatural properties and potentially might just end up as a giant Trevenant.

Turns out they're into that shit.

Gen 3 is up for review

Gen 3 was the soft reboot that set Pokemon on the track it's currently on, and the starters sort of reflect that, while still having a lot of great design sensibilities and awesome creative liberties that really make them stand out among their peers. They're all phenomenal and can easily be worked with, and all deserve to be a "favorite" imo. 9/10, weirdly sporty and really matching the adventure vibes hoenn presents.

Time to break down... it, that is

Yes I did purposely go for Ash's. And why not? That stick takes an already great design and adds even more swagger to it. A classic little guy, and a classic friend- but the kind that you trust to keep it real with you. The color choices are really fun, the versatility is great, and all in all, Treecko is just great, but certain art helps it more than others. 8/10, with the stick becoming an easy 9.

Oh yeah and yall weirdos will immediately see this as PMD Grovyle. The character Grovyle is one of the most dark and interesting characters within the entire franchise, and I do feel like that adds to a lot of people's love for it- myself included *somewhat.*

But for the normal Grovyle NOT from pmd, it's kind of a weird middle stage for me. Certainly not bad, but the lack of an actual tail definitely takes me out. Still, other than the leaf on its head and its tail, you can easily see the gap between Treecko and Sceptile brought together. A 6/10 by itself, whereas pmd grovyle is a 9.

This is just an ordinary Sceptile, and I think that's probably the coolest you can get for it. Like there's "cool" like previous starters like Charizard, Blastoise, Typhlosion, and Feraligatr, and then there's "smack a jukebox" cool like Sceptile. I'd say this is the first actually cool grass starter. It's a confident design with great details that make it stand out, even the tree tail that is both a little out of place and cool at the same time. So what's the catch? Well, look at it's arms. Clearly this Pokemon was meant to use Leaf Blade as it's signature move, but for some forsaken reason, it's now a special attacker- it's still an incredibly cool one, but something was definitely lost with the transition from early gen to gen 4 type and stat mechanics. Otherwise though? Just a great design overall. 9/10, with Ash's almost being a 10 for beating that bitch ass Darkrai, but then it loses a point for it's weird cuck arc it had in the Battle Frontier anime when a Tropius stole the Meganium it liked.

This entire line is probably one of the best grass starters you can possibly get. 8/10

It's a cute chicken. It's kind of hard to find talking points about it, it's a cute chicken and definitely an early sign of what was to come from starter marketing, with a big head and tiny body. The colors are a nice blend and... yes, that's it. Its a friend. 8/10. I like it.

Now Combusken- I think this is the first middle stage evolution I truly dislike. It's not... bad? It's just... not good. I think it's design is decent at showing off it's new fighting type, for sure. But, the head and thighs, and certainly the tail feathers, just don't work for me. Cock and balls out of 10, aka like a 5.

Okay, I know I have a disdain for humanoid starters, but Blaziken was the first and the first to do it RIGHT. See this is the thing- there are no bad angles on this guy. No, he just aura farms no matter how he appears. This is a Pokemon that screams leg use, and the creative liberties taken to avoid a literal chicken while still looking serious and cool are not appreciated enough. Cool colors, cool design, I especially love how it's head wings just spread out while fighting. Brave Bird and Blaze Kick just feel CORRECT on Blaziken. 9/10.

The line isn't really consistent to say the least, and you're also stuck with Combusken for a weirdly long time for my tastes. The transition is kind of symbolic of humans, though. Cute as a kid, ugly as a teen, cool as an adult. 8/10, probably one of the best fire starters around.

Oh there he is. THERE HE IS! The kip himself! That's not just a friend, that's a BUDDY! I didn't come to appreciate him until my teen years, but god, he's just a perfect little boy. The colors are immaculate, the design is a creatively cute and cool blend of random amphibious animals and land critters, and it's a creative way to turn an animal you wouldn't begin to even THINK of being a starter and making it one, which I REALLY wish gf would do again. 9/10.

I'm gonna say it, the hate on Marshtomp is forced at best and 3d pilled at worst. Yes in 3d it looks like it forgot there was a test today, but in 2d and sprites? That's just a cool guy. Maybe not the most immediately identified as an animal, but as a monster? God, it works. The colors aren't as great as Mudkip or Swampert, but it's a fine enough pokemon as is and kinda sporty. I feel Marshtomp is a really good match for game May tbh. 8/10.

Swampert is a divisive pokemon- there are those who think it's cool af, and then there are those that are stupid, inept, and WRONG. It's a monster first and foremost, which I think is the best way to go about pokemon design. It's an overall fun and creative design that really matches the vibes of Hoenn itself: adventures on the land and sea. The pads and sails are just a great addition as well, especially the colors, which help accentuate some colors and make others pop. The typing is fantastic until you meet a single grass type, and it's movesets are fun as well. This used to be my favorite water type until Samurott rolled up. Yeah, 9/10.

The Mudkip line overall is what I feel is Pokemon's strongest suit: monsters. Not a furry oc or an avant garde art piece you need an art history masters degree to understand and "get," it's a monster that just gets cooler as it gets bigger, and honestly you don't need to know it's supposed to be based on axolotls to enjoy them. This is the kind of starter I really miss tbh. 9/10

Gen 4 will be next

Raikou just sprawled out on Alola’s sandy beaches. Torracat sprawled out either next to or on top of the legendary cat. As long as Ash and Pikachu stay within the electrics line of sight then the big cat Pokémon see’s no need to move.

Articuno and Suicune chilling at May’s house or either in some clearing nearby while Ash helps May with some contest routines and Max with his Treecko. Their straight gossiping about everything and anything and only Ash and the other Pokémon seem to understand what their mumbles and grumbles mean and Ash brushes it all off whenever May or Max ask for translation.

Cresselia finding themself in Ash’s backyard in Kanto. The boy too tired but he still can’t fall asleep, unlike his mother all tucked up in her bed and Pikachu who’s laying on the other back patio chair. They make sure to bless the two with sweet dreams while keeping silent companionship with Ash until the sun rises.

The -rus triplets (thundurus, tornadus and landorus) making sure Ash and the OG crew are able to find shelter during a sudden horrific lightning and rainstorm. Popping out of no where and are quite docile for Ash’s pass interactions with them, but he’ll take it if it means his friends are safe.

Yveltal and Xerneas both somehow in Sinnoh, watching Ash and the others from a distance as they all have a giant snowball war. Yveltal somewhat offering coverage to Xerneas and some smaller Pokémon from the light snow. Grumbling about how big the large deer pokemons antlers are before Xerneas tells them to shut up and rest their wing on said horns. Their not as prickly as they look.

I Can't Wait to Go Home

Serena has just placed second in Hoenn's Grand Festival, losing to her friend May Maple. Performing and coordinating, though her passion, have grown exhausting, and so before she heads back home to Kalos to compete for Kalos Queen, she decides to take a vacation to the Alola Region. But what will happen if she reunites with her inspiration for performing in the first place?

Chapter 1: Living In Your Glass House, I’m Outside

Serena needs a break after two years of performing and coordinating without pause. So, she elects to take a well-earned vacation before returning to Kalos. Ash has his priorities. He's going to do well in the Pokémon School, ace all the Island Trials, and finally become a Pokémon Master. So why can't he get a girl out of his head?

Serena and May walked through the door to May’s house after a long day– a long week, really. Somehow, despite having just been at the Grand Festival, her parents and Max had made it home before the two girls in time to set up a whole party, complete with streamers, balloons, and a banner reading “Congratulations, May!”

“Guys– All this for me?!” May gasped, covering her mouth.

Max grinned. “We had a feeling.”

She bit her lip and glanced over to Serena. “But–”

The blonde nudged her forward. “I’m not going to be so sad that I don’t celebrate you! You were amazing, May, and you deserve it!”

She stared at her, breaking out in a wide smile. “Thank you.”

May eagerly ran over to the cake Caroline had baked, cutting slices for everyone. She took the largest slice for herself, handed a sliver of a piece to Max while giggling as he protested, and passed three more to her parents and Serena.

“This is delicious!” she exclaimed. “You outdid yourself, Mom.”

Caroline raised a flute of champagne. “I had to. My daughter reached her dream, of course!”

May cleared her throat and held her slice of cake up in the air like it was a toast. “To my best and most formidable opponent,” she declared.

Serena grinned and lifted hers. “To the deserving Top Coordinator of Hoenn, Miss May Maple!”

The party went on for a while, the Pokémon mingling and acquainting themselves with Max’s Treecko and Poochyena. Caroline and Norman even let May and Serena have a small bit of champagne for themselves, so long as they didn’t go operate any heavy machinery for a few hours.

“We don’t even have our licenses, Dad,” May had snorted, and he’d raised his hands.

“Just in case. I know how you teenagers can be.”

“Hey, we’re pretty responsible for teenagers!”

By the time the family died down, night had fallen. Max turned in for the night first, and the girls stayed behind to help with cleanup. Once that was finally done, they headed upstairs to May’s room, which they elected to share on the few occasions they made their way back to her house.

For a year now, Serena and May had been traveling through Hoenn together, competing in Contests. They’d met at a Pokémon Center after May’s Munchlax had stolen Serena’s Pancham’s Poképuff, and her Fighting type had tracked it down. After that, the rest was history. The other girl taught her how to work as a Coordinator, and Serena showed her some dances in return. They’d soon worked out their mutual connection of Ash, leading to relentless teasing from May about Serena’s crush.

All in all, they were fast friends. May was a bit like Bonnie, Serena had thought a few times. Headstrong and determined, but May was realistic where Bonnie was always optimistic. It was nice to have someone to talk to grown-up girl stuff with, but she would never replace the girl who had become her little sister.

Serena clutched her blue ribbon tight as she perched on the end of May’s bed. She, Braixen, Pancham, and Sylveon, had put up a good fight, but had ultimately fallen short in the final round, losing to May and her team. May had won it all, reaching her goal, and once again, Serena was in second place. Second-best.

Was it something about her? Was she just not cut out to be a Top Coordinator or Kalos Queen? What was she missing?

Anyway so I've been thinking about this all day here have what little pokemon friends II characters would have. (not teams cause if I had to choose 6 I'd die)

I only got the 2 polycules and the brothers done so far lol.

Tissues: Cubchoo and Komala. Sleepy babies. Enough said.

Trophy: Scraggy/Scrafty and Cutiefly. Idk I feel like Scraggy or Scrafty would be a good work out vibing buddy and Cutiefly would act as like a little drone for sky photos. Most people in the hotel don't even know Cutiefly is Trophy's they just see her flying around the hotel sometimes and assume it's one of the girl's. (Also Cutiefly would sleep in his cup because yes.)

Cheesy: Alolan Rattata and Lechonk. Alolan Rattata because Cheesy is the type of bitch to name it "Luigi" and Lechonk because that name is funny as hell and Cheesy thinks so too.

Knife: Pancham and Purrserker. Pancham because they have the same vibe and Purrserker because lmao little knife cat man.

Pickel: Treecko and Charjabug. Cause if anyone is gonna have a starter Pokemon it's gonna be the resident video game nerd Pickle. And Charjabug because I think Pickle would think it's cute and Charjabug acts as his personal charger for his phone + switch.

Microphone: Chatot and Liepard. Chatot because colorful song bird that mimics people and Liepard cause Mic would be the type of bitch to keep a large semi feral cat around the house if given the chance and you cannot convince me otherwise. (Liepard and Purrserker cuddle a lot because they're both big ol cats lol)

Mephone4: Minun and Rotom. Minun because I feel like all of the Meeple devices should have Pikachu clones and Mephone would be twinning with 4S and Rotom because if anyone is gonna have a pokemon that can become a fridge and an oven it's gonna be Mephone c'mon.

Mephone4S: Plusle, Sylveon, and Krookodile. I picked three because I physically couldn't narrow it down. Plusle to match with Mephone because they're the brothers fr. Sylveon because he definitely nicknamed her "Kitty" after "Hello Kitty" and Krookodile because.... literally look at it. Krookodile is just 4S as a pokemon. The fact Ash's Krookodile in the anime wears sunglasses doesn't help.

ANYWAY I have no idea if anyone cares about this at all. Probably not but I thought it was cute lol. 12 year old me would be so happy. Good for her BSBDBD. I'm also definitely drawing these later but it's 2am so that's happening tomorrow l.
