I remember discussing Tintin casting choices with a friend from Germany and remarked how it was odd he often has an English accent in adaptations rather than a Belgian one, and my friend just replied "that's because Tintin gives incredibly strong English boy energy (derogatory)"
Here in the UK there's a lot of weird classism tied into accents. Today accent diversity and representation in broadcasting is actively pursued but in Tintin's time there certainly was a preferred accent to have.
imagine this exchange happens between pages 28-29 in The Crab with the Golden Claws
#tintin#adventures of tintin#comic#captain haddock#archibald haddock#snowy#milou#fanart#the crab with the golden claws#i remember tintin crafting a trumpet to communicate with an elephant#and he remarks he must get the accent correct#very odd scenario but it shows he would be a stickler for that sort of thing#i also have to say accents do not indicate how smart someone is#a lot of pundits use an english accent to sound more credible#but i have to say there are a lot of fucking idiots here#me included#thank you 2011 film for validating my scottish haddock headcanon#any french speakers who have read to this point i wonder what your hcs are for his french speaking accent

DP x DC: The Most Dangerous Card Game
Ok so Danny has essentially claimed earth as his. And he is fully aware that there are constant threats to the planet. Now he can’t stop a threat that originates on earth (that’s something he’ll leave to the Justice league) but he can do something about outside threats. Doing some research on ancient spells, rituals, and artifacts, he cast a world wide barrier on the planet to protect it from hostile threats so they cannot enter. This will prevent another Pariah Dark incident. However, barriers like this come at a price. You see, there are two ways to make a barrier. Either make one powered up by your own energy and power (which would be constantly draining) or set up a barrier with rules. The way magic works is that nothing can be absolutely indestructible. It must have a weakness. The most powerful barriers weren’t the ones reinforced with layer after layer of protective charms and buffed up with power. Those could eventually be destroyed either by being overpowered, wearing them down, or by cutting off the original power source. No, the most powerful barriers were the ones with a deliberate weakness. A barrier indestructible except for one spot. A cage that can only be opened from the outside. Or that can only be passed with a key or by solving a riddle. So Danny chooses this type of barrier and does the necessary ritual and pours in enough power to make it. And he adds his condition for anyone to enter.
Now the Justice league? Find out about the barrier when Trigon attempts to attack, they were preparing after he threatened what he would do once he got to earth. How he would destroy them. The Justice league tried to take the fight to him first but were utterly destroyed, so they retreated home to tend to their injuries, and fortify earth for one. Last. Stand. Only when Trigon makes his big entrance…he’s stopped.
The Justice league watch in awe as this thin see-through barrier with beautiful green swirls and speckled white lights like stars apears blocking Trigon and his army’s advance. The barrier looks so thin and fragile yet no matter how hard the warlord hits, none of his attacks can get through and neither can he damage said barrier. That’s when Constantine and Zatanna recognizes what this barrier is. Something only a powerful entity could create. For a moment, the league is filled with hope that Trigon can’t get through yet Constantine also explains that it’s not impenetrable. And clearly Trigon knows this too for he calls out a challenge.
And that’s when, in a flash of light, a tiny glowing teenager appears. He looked absolutly minuscule compared to Trigon and yet practically glowed with power (this isn’t a King Danny AU though).
And that is when the conditions for passing the barrier are revealed. And the Justice realize that the only thing stopping Trigon and his army from decimating earth. The only way he can get through….is by beating this glowing teenager in a card game.
Not just any card game though. The most convoluted game Sam, Danny, and Tucker invented themselves. It’s like the infinite realms version of magic the gathering, combined with Pokémon, and chess. And Danny is the master. So sit down Trigon and let’s play.
(The most intense card game of the Justice league’s life).
After Danny wins, this happens a few more times with outer word beings and possibly even demons attempting to invade earth, yet none have been able to beat the mysterious teenager in a card game. Constantine might even take a crack at it and try to figure out how to play. He’s really bad though. Every time this happens, the Justice league worry that this might be the time the teenager looses. Yet every time, he wins (even if only barely).
Meanwhile, Danny, Sam, and Tucker have gotten addicted to the game and play it almost daily. Some teachers might seem them playing the game are are like ‘awww how cute’ not realizing this game is literally saving the world. Jazz is just happy they aren’t spending as much time on their screens playing Doomed.
#DPxDC#Kizzer55555 ideas#Danny makes a card game to save the world.#Technically he worded the ritual so that they had to ‘beat’ him as those are the most powerful barriers and most reliable.#keys can just get lost or stolen (like the one to Pariah’s Coffin)#A riddle would be useless once someone figured out the answer. Like how no one takes the sphynx seriously anymore.#(Sorry Tuck. But it’s true).#And there is NO WAY Danny is just leaving a hole open for anyone to pass through. No thank you!#So…beating him. But it’s not like Danny wanted to fight so…he edited the ritual a TINY bit. Card games are good. Much less painful too.#Danny Tucker and Sam made the most complicated card game they could imagine.#It’s based on their strategies for fighting ghosts. Capturing them in thermoses. And MUCH based on a on field battle strategy.#It often requires spontaneous thinking on the spot. So Danny? In his ELEMNT. It doubles as practice for his actual ghost battles too.#They had SO much fun making this.#Sam added an entire series of plant cards that act as traps and healing ointments and duds that just take up the field.#Tucker added legitimate hyroglyphics combined with Latin as well as English and ghost speak.#Yes. You actually have to speak that language to play. With proper pronunciation. (Amity Parker’s think the three are talking gibberish.)#I headcanon Sam and Tucker are fluent in Ghost.#Constantine WILL figure this game out SO HELP HIM!#Some of the cards also have combinations related to constellations either in name or placement on the board.#By the way the board is based on a Hexagonal summoning circle with Rhunes along the edges#And the placement of the cards on the board and on what rhune MATTERS.#Also the cards move disintegrate and have certain abilities. Think of Harry Potter Wizard Chess.#But they are normal when Danny plays at school. This is just for ✨effect✨ Against invaders.#Danny faces multiple opponents. He also halts alien invasions.#While Danny COULD stop crime on earth he’s not sure how to fight a normal human and hold back so he sticks to ghosts.#The Justice league are going crazy trying to figure out who this entity is and after deep research are convinced this is some sort of#Ancient being who has protected earth for millenia. They have paintings on ruins and everything.#Danny is not aware they think this.#Raven starts praying to Danny as if he is a god and wrangles the other Teen Titans into doing so as well. Danny is still unaware of this.#Danny is not a King or an ancient. Just a very VERY strong ghost.

I want you to know that your art is very important to me, and I'm very invested in all of the characters I have seen from you. Also, the discussion about Finnish and other languages having gendered words or not has been the last little push to get me to start learning Finnish which I think is fun.
I'm making this a little compilation post of all the language asks I got. Thank you for sharing, this was genuinely really interesting!
#answered#anonymous#long post#the-biornicles#procyon-caffeinaeus#also this may sound childish but it's always thrilling whenever I get to read posts like these#I dunno it's just so outlandish that there are a bunch of people living in the various corners of the planet who like my art and characters#and take the time to read the nonsense I write in tumblr tags#you'd think you would get used to the idea but no it still makes me giddy#also to the anons learning Finnish I'm cheering for you#Finnish people are typically extremely stoked/flattered/shyly pleased whenever someone deems our language even a little bit worth learning#and they love to tell you that Finnish is hard but it's mostly because it's not an Indo-European language#so chances are it's going to be sort of different and incompatible with the language(s) you already speak#English for example is more closely related to Sanskrit Bengali and Persian than Finnish

To other English people, stop saying "England has no culture", it is actively harming us. There is a reason the Tories defunded the arts and heritage sectors whilst scapegoating immigrants. The fear that immigrants will come and destroy Englishness is only working as the government is literally trying to actively wipe it out. If we a) recognise the things that are distinctly cultural (eg architecture styles) and b) actively participate in the traditions you're always told are silly (Morris and Molly dancing, scarecrow competitions and folk songs), it will actually make us better as a country and more difficult to divide via classism, racism and xenophobia
To be extra clear, these traditions are for everyone, queer people, imagrants and anyone of any faith (including Islam).
The deliberate eroding of our folklore/traditions by conservatives (both big and little c) is allowing for the insecurities weaponised by the types of Tommy Robinson against imagrants. These traditions and folklore do still need challenging from a modern critical lense (like how blackface has been removed from Morris dancing). Nor should they be preserved exactly how they used to be, because folklore and customs have always changed with the times. Having a good understanding of our past, critically understanding and accepting of the problems in it will absolutely contribute to decolonisation. Hopefully, having a solid grasp of our own traditions and folklore in a meaningful positive way will allow us to step back from clinging desperately to the parts of Welsh, Scottish and Irish culture we cling to because we don't think we have our own. Doing so will also hopefully allow for more support of the Welsh, Scottish and Irish independence movements. Also, it will hopefully stop the rampant cultural appropriation of other sacred traditions - it's ridiculous that modern wiccans believe that smudging with a non native plant (white sage) that's being driven to extinction by over harvesting will clear any sort of bad luck.
#they speak#england#english culture#sincerely someone who's tired#yes we have traditional folk costumes and folklore and architecture styles and chruch traditions#our language is cultural - just because it is now a (forced) lingua franca don't forget that#please just go to a local museum or library and pick up a book of local folklore and history#go to the slightly shit village or town fête and watch the slightly shit morris dancers - do you know why they're slightly shit?#bc they're all Old. they're the only ones really actively participating in it#londoners especially stop doing this - of course you think there's no culture if you've never actually left london and actively participate#*participated in it

[A sad violin song plays over an image of a sad hamster]
Pac: This doesn't have anything to do with me – I wear a blue sweatshirt, you're crazy, this mouse doesn't even have a sweatshirt, this hamster! [Reading chat] Am I a depressed hamster?
[ Transcript continued ↓ ]*
–
Pac: Actually– that's fine! I embrace that idea – of course I'm going to be depressed, are you crazy? [He hits his desk, then starts counting off people on his fingers] Fit is gone, Richarlyson is gone, Ramon is gone, Bagi and Empanada who were always there when we were there are also gone, I haven't seen them! It's just me and Tubbo, and sometimes Philza shows up.
Pac: I lost Chume Labs, I lost the Favela, I lost Murder Mystery, I lost Ilha Chume Labs, it's crazy! Look at how much I've lost, and I've gained nothing! Of course I'm going to be depressed, are you crazy?! How am I supposed to be happy?!
Pac: [Reading chat] "You have us Pac," that's true, thank you. No, that's true, sorry.
* NOTE: Please note that this is an incomplete transcript, as I was primarily relying on Aypierre's translation mod at the time and if I am not confident of the translation, I do not include it. As always, please feel free to add on translations or message me corrections.
#Pactw#QSMP#Pac#March 18 2024#As much as I love keeping people updated about Pac / the other Portuguese-speaking creators#I think I might not make as many transcribed posts for their clips anymore#I just don't think I'm qualified enough to be transcribing things for a language I don't know#like yeah we have the Qlobal Translator and Aypierre's translators to rely on#And I'm always upfront when I'm not 100% sure about a translation#but I've been thinking about it a lot and it kinda makes me feel a bit icky. Idk.#I might be overthinking this but I just I don't want to spread around translations I'm not super confident about#esp. since I know a lot of people cite my clips in analysis posts or link them to other people as resources#and 90% of the time I'm like ''Hell yeah I love seeing people getting a lot of use out of the archive''#but sometimes I get a bit anxious like ''Did I do a good enough job translating this''#''Am I ruining someone's entire perception of a conversation or character because I left one word out or mistranslated something?''#And like I said that's normally not a HUGE concern since if I'm not certain about a translation I just won't post a clip. but you know#idk it might just be the anxiety talking but I really really don't want to spread bad info#Happy to hear other folks' perspective#I'm really grateful for people like Bell and Pix and others who translate clips and I always try to reblog those#but we don't have a ton of people posting clips & translating things on Tumblr since we're so English-centric#which is part of the reason WHY I like sharing clips of the non-English-speaking CCs#but at the same time I want to do an accurate job representing what they're saying#Maybe I'll just start posting things and give a TLDR context of what they're talking about but not a transcript#that way native-speakers can hop in and add translations if that's something they're comfortable doing#and if not then well. at least I'm not sharing something that isn't super accurate#idk I'm just thinking out loud a bit in the tags#But I'm open to hearing other people's thoughts on the matter#Anyways giant rant aside. q!Pac is NOT doing ok rn

thoughts on thistle and yaad's dynamic that i vomited in the tags of another post but will now try to articulate here: they're not actually family, or at least they shouldn't be. not in a conventional sense anyway. framing them as uncle and nephew (even in a non-literal, silly fantasy world way) rides more on technicality than anything concrete.
what i mean by this is yaad calls thistle by name and says he and delgal were raised "like" brothers. he talks about thistle like he's an outsider imposing himself into the melinis' space, and it's clear that thistle was never legitimized as a member of the family. for thistle's part, though we don't know how he would treat yaad pre-demon brainrot, it's safe to assume based on the way he punishes him—turning him into a doll—and how little is shown in the way of any sort of relationship between them that thistle only cares* about yaad as an extension of delgal (otherwise i'd expect something like kabru and milsiril, because it's not like another complicated interspecies family dynamic would be out of place, yet there's next to nothing on them even in bonus content, just their scant interactions in the main story).
in essence, they're strangers to one another. thistle's desperation to preserve the illusion of a family, a model where he doesn't even fit, was the snare they were caught in for the past thousand years of stasis. yaad-as-nephew is a prop to uphold that illusion, and thistle is playing a role he's unfit to play. in the context of post-canon interactions, attempting to reconstruct that facade would only be a reenactment of trauma for them both (in a deeply compelling way i'd love to watch unfold, tbh), as that "uncle and nephew" framing places thistle in an implicit position of power over someone he's already traumatized through misuse of authority in the past, a role which also perpetuates his adultification and yaad's infantilization in turn. it'd mostly be an obstacle to any real connection.
best to burn the melini family bridge, i think, and if there's still anything salvageable left in the rubble, let something different supplant it.
#not to say i don't enjoy when they're portrayed as a weird set of uncle and nephew - that's really fun too#i think their history and shared connection to delgal would be a key element to their dynamic no matter what#and it's something they would tryyyy to make work at some point. for lack of other options.#it's not smn i take too seriously either! but thinking about it for more than 2 minutes makes me go oh yikes#i do think they could be family - i'm a certified sucker and sap so i want them to be - but#growth means moving past that more conventional way of thinking of family#side note as someone with a large extended family i DO have uncles who are younger than me lmao#but i'm viewing the whole uncle + nephew thing with thistle and yaad more symbolically for the purposes of this#additional note the fantasy age-fuckery and power dynamics at play means thistle has been in an actual position of authority#over his younger family members like any older relative would be in spite of his being quite young and immature#so. no. don't try to be his uncle anymore. and he isn't your nephew. and oh god he isn't your dead brother let it go. stop with the labels#don't try to resurrect that corpse (< writing them trying to resurrect that corpse as we speak)#not sure if these tags are coherent pero basta lang. yaad and thistle stay complicated forever that's all i want#feel free to chime in or disagree as i'd like to crack into this like crispy lechon and my opinions are subject to change#roomba media#thistle#yaad#thistle & yaad#melinis#dunmeshi#dunmeshiposting#dunmeshi spoilers#thistle dungeon meshi#dungeon meshi#edit: changed some inaccurate wording in this one whew. english

If you're specifically looking to write Ahti, don't rely on machine translation. Finnish is a notoriously bastard language to approximate statistically because of our dozen noun cases, inconsistent and dialect-dependent spelling and extremely fast and loose compound word rules.
Rather, go on Wiktionary's Finnish Proverbs and Finnish Idioms pages, and look for anything that looks funny (with a side-order of mentioning that it's a western Finnish/Bothnian thing, for character consistency), because Finns are also extremely overrepresented on the English-speaking internet.
#Alan Wake 2#Ahti the Janitor#Ahti's bad English is lovingly written#it's got a lot of the kind of weird word substitutions and vocabulary inclusions that you'd expect from a strange old man like him#it's also extremely funny of him to be referencing Finnish popculture and advertisements#it's such a specific Flavour of Bloke. The people at Remedy are so silly and I love them#Also if you're someone who Speaks Bible then making him use biblical proverbs is always appropriate#as secular as Finland is we sure love our blasphemy#Alan Wake (Remedy)

One thing I love about ikesen is that without it I would have never heard what the sengoku period was. Im so glad I’ve come across this game and come to b aware of this time period.
(Currently learning bout (irl) hideyoshi’s failed invasions of Korea- very interesting stuff!)
#im turning into a history nerd like sasukeee#just my thoughts#INCOMING HISTORIC RAMBLE#hideyoshi toyotomi#what was hideyoshi thinking lmao 😭#admiral yi is a GOAT absolutely crazy i dont think I’ve ever felt so impressed by a historical figure till now#very few instances in history where Japan Korean and China are all involved?#anyways as someone who is Chinese and is interested/fond of Korea and Japan this is very very interesting#also I think the catastrophic failure of the invasion lead to most daimyo to support Ieyasu Tokugawa instead in sekigahara?#understandable cause bro so many ppl died for no reason#but why oh why didnt hideyoshi just enter China from (modern day) Shanghai?#wouldn’t it b so much easier than to having to go thru Korea first or am I missing something?#speaking of sekigahara I read (some of it at least) kanetsugu naoe’s letter the other day#I really really wish there was more English sources of information on the sengoku period#ikemen sengoku#ikesen

Genuinely really loving the tendency of official Doctor Who stuff to now refer to the Doctor in general with they/them pronouns
#Doctor Who#New Who#The Doctor#I am talking#I feel like the Doctor in the show just lets people assume whatever pronouns and gender#because people are going to make assumptions and whatever anyways#and going along with people's weird assumptions until there's a reason not to is generally the Doctor's MO#see: anytime someone is like 'are you here for XYZ reason?' and the Doctor's just like 'yes absolutely'#but I feel like if the Doctor had a reason to care about the nuances of human gender conventions in the 21st century#they would like they/them pronouns#also I think it's neat that Time Lords who do have an actual experience of gender#like the master#seem to use whatever pronoun applied at the time in question when speaking in past tense in English#rather than the human convention of using the current pronoun even when speaking retroactively#it's just an interesting distinction#and then that makes me think about translation stuff and how concepts about gender may not even apply in Gallifreyan#but this is getting too long for me just rambling in the tags

Idk how to describe it but I'm so glad we stop referring to other women, specially in an anecdote when she was being annoying/unpleasant in any way, as "bitch" and instead simply use "girl". Such as "girl, what are you talking about". Like, she was disrespectful but we don't use foul language while referring to a complete stranger.
#if i posted this thought on twitter i believe i would've been cooked to death#this is probably a non-issue but as someone who's being on the English speaking side of the internet for a while#i believe this is a good change. it always felt really odd while reading tweets#(though you could make a point this is aave(? though I'm not sure. im not usamerican im from a spanish speaking country#and im not that well verxed in that area. im a linguist)#this was just an observation made by someone interested in linguistics#social media#feminism#(?#language#gender#or maybe this is a normal way of talking to strangers and my ex christian background just makes me feel uncomfortable using “bad words”#either way i wanna know if other people see this shift

how do you think the focus on using precise language affects systems who don't natively speak english?
Sorry, I know this has been sitting in my askbox since a day or two ago when the syscourse ask thing first happened
Anyways, I don't think I can speak on this too much, since I am a system whose first language is English, so I don't have that experience personally, and sadly haven't seen it talked about much either
I would imagine though, that similar to how it often is with many language & culture specific slang terms, the amount of highly specific terms for systems & plurality in English probably causes confusion and misunderstandings for systems whose first language isn't English, especially those who don't fluently speak it at all.
I had some struggles learning terms specific to other areas versions of English, such as British slang when I first had many friends who were British. I can only imagine how much more difficult that is for people who didn't start out already knowing the base language itself to learn. And in a way, some specific terms for things like systems (and also things like gender & orientation microlabels, although that's not related to the question) are likely worse because they don't really translate at all. Or if they do, such as with terms that are made up of other English words that by themselves mean something unrelated to systems, it might translate completely incorrectly and cause even more confusion.
I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing to use such precise language & labels. It definitely can be very helpful for some. But I can imagine it also definitely makes it more difficult for certain people, such as people who don't speak English as a first language, to navigate these spaces.
#ask#asks#syscourse#if someone who doesn't speak english as a first language wants to chime in please feel free
