It's really weird to me too... the Tecna mistake. Like I know technology has a silent H, but why on earth would her name keep that silent h? Most of the other names have at least 5 letters too. I assume they grew up with the show on 4kids when people make that mistake- because if you consumed the show through the other dubs the intros have the characters name. If you had the print media or the show though you should know. I honestly think it reveals a lot about the fan if they make that mistake. With the Tinker Bell ones I'm not sure...
One of the reasons I blame for the Tinker Bell typo is Google autocorrect. I distinctly remember in the late 2000s that Google would autocorrect "Tinker Bell" to "Tinkerbell". A lot of people online spelled it that way too. Being a kid around 5-9 years old who learned to type on my own this would always make me angry because I went out of my way to spell it as Tinker Bell seeing it in print media, but eventually I succumbed to writing it as "Tinkerbell" just so Google wouldn't bother me. Luckily, Google will spell the name right now... Deep down I knew it was never spelled like that even when I have typed it like that. I also made the double r Terence mistake more than I like to admit, but that's because I had forgotten. The Disney Fairies books were the only ones where I had seen that name with one r as well. I also cared about the other characters more and I feel it is relevant to that.
Is it wrong to admit that I assume a lot about the person both typos? In a non judgemental way of course... we all make mistakes 😔
If someone misspells Tecna's name as "Techna" or I see the Disney Tinker Bell's name as "Tinkerbell, TinkerBell, or Tinkerbelle" my brain automatically makes a lot of assumptions as to why they made the mistake. I assume people who misspell Tecna's name may engage with Winx Club and it's community a bit differently, might be from a non English speaking country or an English speaking but aren't usually native Italian (maybe other romance language?) speakers because Tecna comes from the Italian word for technology that has no h. Or, that people who misspell Tinker Bell's name as "Tinkerbelle" are quite old, and may associate certain characters together like Belle and Tinker Bell. People who use the stylized combined version I imagine are very confused on how it is supposed to be spelled or assume a lot from the DVD cover which looks like it says "TinkerBell" when in reality it's Tinker Bell. But, I usually genuienly admire their commitment to be so correct and use what they believe to be the source material even when they aren't. I'm not naming any names though but I do notice that the I've talked people who use this spelling tend to be and 1. bilingual 2. dedicated fans which would make sense in this context. It's a little endearing seeing that dedication to getting it right even if they aren't. I've come to a different conclusion about Tecna. Tecna will never get that same fandom dedication from certain Winx Club fans. People just assume her name is spelled with an h with no further context and people who have been confused on Tink's name for a long time seem to care enough on how to spell her name. I'm sure there's people who would want to spell her name right but not that's not always the case with Tecna. Tecna's name could be on so many Winx things and somehow people reach the conclusion that there's an h. Google could tell them too. Google wasn't lying on how to spell Tecna's name for half a decade.
Maybe even some Winx fans keep that mispelling... from my understanding there are people who don't want to correct themselves on a proper spelling- or they come to the conclusion on their own that her name just sort of keeps the silent h. Which is just sort of wild to me as her name is so short...
I don't understand that there are people who don't correct "Techna" to Tecna when at some point giving how often they are in the community. If they have been they should know how it is spelled. Why don't they? Why go through the effort of extending her name by one letter when you know how it's spelled? Is it an instinctive thing? Community mistake? Autocorrect being annoying? "Tecna comes from technology so Techna would be the proper spelling and the creators themselves got it wrong" (Is this a comment that's been made before? Cause somewhere this was quoted and I've just been confused. I'm paraphrasing it a little.) Do they not read comments? Why is it so common to see people misspell Tecna? Has this common mistake happening for as long as Winx has been around? It's gotten to the point where I assume whether someone cares about her or not, not in a "fake fan" way though. Just that Tecna might not be a relevant character to them and they don't consume a lot of content with Tecna. Which, okay... maybe I do judge a little bit knowing Tecna is unpopular. Common one letter off/additional letter typos are now a new fandom small peeve of mine cause I don't get how people collectively misremember how a name is spelled to such an extent. It does get annoying. Sometimes a character's name can be spelled wrong so many times you can feel your self get slightly relieved when someone finally spells it right...
the fact that ppl still misspell tecna as techna should be studied
#fandom#i wonder if pepper anne techna and tinkerbelle are all hanging out together in some white void#< btw mutual i have if u read this that was for a youtube rando not for you#iginio straffi better do something bad with Techna in the reboot! and he looks around wondering who that is#the other ones don't bother me as much but theres something incredibly annoying with the techna typo. she doesn't even look like a techna.#winx club#tecna#this all comes from honest confusion

The amount of people who just like fully miss or don’t understand the plot of Jenifer’s body will always be insane to me (it’s mostly men, I’m not even going to pretend it’s not)
And like my problem with it is that the same people who couldn’t tell you what the movie is about beyond Jenifer being a “cheerleader” (she’s in fucking color guard) who kills men, are the ones who complain about what a bad movie it is
#it’s not a bad movie just because you can’t understand it#as a person who’s seen it at least 5 times and owns it on dvd#I can and will explain the entire plot.#I will say it was weird that they didn’t use the song the movie is named after??#in the last scene they used Violet by hole instead of Jenifer’s body by hole and I honestly don’t know why#jenifers body

Watching Ghibli film as a sort of Japanese habit for the summertime, so I rent 5 minor movies!
26/7/2024
Every Japanese person should have an experience of watching Ghibli film on TV at least once in its lifetime. Nippon Television(日本テレビ), or Channel 4 in Japan, has constantly aired Ghibli movies in their night program called Friday road SHOW for more than 25 years. Especially, it tends to broadcast some of them in summer. That's why people who have lived in Japan for so long associate the Studio Ghibli with summer with great ease. Then, I've rented some DVDs as our sort of tradition and I'm expecting that I will be able to make the most of the summertime through this pastime.
*
"Only Yesterday(おもひでぽろぽろ)" directed by Isao Takahata(1991)
"Only Yesterday" follows a woman called Taeko across two different timelines; the director Takahata did well in expressing visually what is like exploring the gap between someone's past and present in mind by using color contrast as well as a rough background in the past sequence. Then, younger herself shows up around her like she follows and sticks to her everywhere she goes. This double-layered screen in animation can be reflective of a kind of universal phenomenon that memories will always be with you wherever you go.
I, actually, had watched this movie once on TV when I was young and since then, I've remembered the scene about menstruation experienced by girls in/at elementary school; because their experience was so close to mine, and also it used to be rare to see episodes about period in public at that time.
However, for this time, I found myself relating to and gravitating toward other aspects of this movie, which was mostly the present part, such as the procedure of dying with the safflower(Benibana), life in the countryside, and her introspective attitude to the past. Since I'm now 25, my viewpoint should differ from that of younger myself. In fact, I have a pile of memories to look back at and experiences to recall compared to a child. That is an adult, I've got convinced myself.
Again, this was also about what woman in Japan experiences as a girl/woman(I don't want to separate people by sex or gender, but most of Taeko's experiences seemed to be attributed to her gender), I assume. Even though her childhood was during the 1980s, or long before I was born and I spent my own childhood, there was no big difference between us. It means that the society has yet to change a lot in term of gender roles, which is sad, indeed.
"Ocean Waves(海がきこえる)" directed by Tomomi Mochizuki(1993)
This is a 60 minute-long film adaptation made by younger artists at the Ghibli Studio and originally aimed for broadcasting but a theater. Nevertheless, I have never seen this on TV since I was born, and now it is only available on DVD and Blu-ray. So, I suppose that it's little known despite the New Media Age.
The story is all about reminiscence, as is "Only Yesterday". A man looked back at his high school days with a transfer girl before the reunion. He tells us about a series of events in the past not only from his viewpoint calmly but also in an objective way; that's why the film managed to show the wonders of meeting and separation on the globe and one theory that love can't always be explained.
I think that "distance" is a theme of this movie. It can help us to put things in perspective, especially we are stuck in something. Growing up, his classmate said that bumping into old familiar faces in another world could lead her to feel so relieved and comfortable that she rejoiced to see even one who she used to dislike. That resonated with me a lot, and I like this scene. Things change, people change, and feelings change. When I was young, I didn't think of such as good, but now I understand to the core.
"My neighbors the Yamadas(ホーホケキョ となりの山田くん)" directed by Isao Takahata(1999)
The Yamadas seems a bit traditional but still be a familiar family structure in Japan, as far as I can see. So, I, in my mid-20s, could deeply relate to many scenes of everyday life in their family and remembered my childhood vividly. Yet, at the same time, I found it a bit stressful for me to see this father behave as the head of a family and embody "patriarchy", although I tried to keep in mind that the movie was released 25 years ago.
Having said that, I liked its character design and its atmosphere which a very delicate touch in illustration and cheerful music by Akiko Yano, who is one of my recent favorite musicians, create very much. As well as that, I appreciate the late Takahata's direction, which always depicts memory or the past well to the point where I'm tearing up; for instance, this stripped down paintings, I mean its faint touch can feel like reminiscence. How nostalgic it is!
*
I've rented two more DVDs: "ジブリの本棚"(Hayao's large book list), a documentary film, and "Studio Ghibli short film collection(from 1993 to 2016)".
The former is all about worldwide children books, especially from the series of Iwanami Children books(岩波少年文庫)curated by a publisher Iwanami, and what Hayao Miyazaki as a creator had been inspired by. Then, he introduced some of the books on his list in detail and told anecdotes about behind the scenes of some films he made or his apprentice days in relation to children books. I liked this documentary in that director Miyazaki talked a lot enjoying himself and looked more interested than I've ever watched.
As for the latter, it was mostly dedicated to TV commercials made by the Ghibli Studio, but there was also a piece of art above named "On Your Mark" directed by Hayao Miyazaki, which was originally made as a music video with a storyline for its song by the J-POP duo CHAGE and ASKA. The story is that an angel is helped to escape from the authorities by two male officers set in the near future. It has a cyberpunk vibe, but somewhere peaceful in nature seemed like an ideal destination in this short film, which Miyazaki should like. Yet, personally, I'm not a fan of those kinds of stories, besides the song and its character design. He tends to depict young women as vulnerable and being rescued by men in the end, although they surely appear to have opinions, be confident, and independent.

Tasty Twosday (Tuesday)
Assy McGee #16: “Showdown in Magic City” | June 9, 2008 - 12:30AM | S02E10
Hey gang, long time no queef. I was back yesterday, and I actually sat down to watch+review this episode, but I wound up rage-quitting because the Adult Swim app wouldn’t let me rewind the episode to check on some very important detail. Oh well.
Also, I need to really apologize again. I am being targeted by harassers who think it’s funny to take my Tuesday posts (which, I’ve established, are rare because of my work schedule) and titling them stuff about “Tasty Tuesday”. There is nothing tasty about this day, this post, or this episode. In fact, it’s repugnant.
In this one, Assy and Sanchez investigate a Miami crime syndicate who are targeting jai alai players in Exeter. They wind up getting a little more than they bargained for when they sniff around their Miami turf. Sanchez is kidnapped, and they leave behind his mustache with his whole upper-lip attached. Gross! The ending involves a daring rescue and Sanchez’s disgusting disfigured face.
This one has a couple of moments that are at least somewhat funny; the theme song suddenly having lyrics is great. Actually, that’s it. That’s the only thing that’s great. Damn. Sad, but true.
EPHEMERA CORNER:
The Boondocks: The Complete Second Season (June 10, 2008)
Okay I’ll do the AI thing for this, because I really struggle with talking about DVD sets I never owned. Just go look up a review, sheesh:
The Complete Second Season of The Boondocks on DVD is a must-have for fans of the show. The season features all 13 episodes, as well as bonus features such as deleted scenes and commentaries. The episodes are just as funny and thought-provoking as the first season, and the bonus features are a great addition. Overall, this is a great DVD set for anyone who enjoys The Boondocks.
This did not mention the two originally-unaired-on-Adult-Swim episodes. Those are on there.
MAIL BAG
So, I saw the Venture Bros. finale over the weekend. I binged the last couple seasons as a refresher, as well as watching the seasons 1-4 and season 5 recap videos. Season 5 would’ve been good to watch again, but you know. I really liked it! I watched an ILLEGAL COPY because I knew I was going to buy the blu-ray eventually. But guess what? It’s sold out at all the places that still carry new blu-rays! So I ordered it on amazon like I should have, and it says it won’t come for AN ENTIRE MONTH. What the hell? I guess it’s heartening that the blu-ray is selling so well. But damn!
do you like assy mcgee better than axe cop
I haven’t seen a TON of Axe Cop. But, yes.
are you gonna do more Tasty Tuesdays in the future? That was fucking weird.
I need to reiterate that Tasty Tuesday is being forced onto me by some malicious trolls who hate me and they hate you and they hate our freedom. I’ve recieved many threatening letters from them telling me that if I make posts on Tuesday that “it’s over for you” referring to me. This is a twisted game they are playing. I would call it “twisted Tuesdays” but I don’t wanna give these FUCKERS ideas.
I think my ideal tasty tuesday is spaghetti, steak, and a handburger. I eat all of that before 2PM and I also have a full-fat coca-cola while on my work shift. Then I just snack all night. Nilla Wafers, pretzels, you name it. Happy Tasty Tuesday, Adult Swim 2021!
Wow, what a spread, sounds good to me. But, I refuse! I will not participate in this custom because it simply isn’t real and it’s being perpetrated by enemies.
Are you going to do tasty tuesday again? I've seen some weird stuff on this website but this particularly is pretty bizarre imho
Okay, I’m convinced that the person whose hacking my blog and making it say “Tasty Tuesdays” on my Tuesday posts is the one writing these Mail Bags. Fuck you, pal. If you are just a fan/best friend, I’m sorry.
what is tasty tuesday? say it! say IT!
NO!
Will we get an update for Tasty Tuesday I wonder>

Review: Sands of Iwo Jima (1949)
Sands of Iwo Jima (1949)
Approved by the Production Code Administration of the Motion Picture Producers & Distributors of America
<Originally posted at https://kevinsreviewcatalogue.blogspot.com/2024/12/review-sands-of-iwo-jima-1949.html>
Score: 4 out of 5
In the canon of Movies That You Watch With Your Dad, Sands of Iwo Jima is one of the big ones, referenced as such by everything from King of the Hill to NCIS. That's how I wound up watching it, the first John Wayne movie I've reviewed (though not the first one I've seen; I watched Rio Bravo a long time ago). Last weekend, I went over to my father and his girlfriend's house for lunch, hooked up his old combination VCR/DVD player to their television so they could watch his old movies (it needed an RCA-to-HDMI adapter), used his VHS tape of this film (the colorized version from the '80s, specifically) to see if it worked, and ultimately sat down and watched it with them. It's enjoyed this reputation for a very long time, too, as many of the fathers who shared this movie with their sons first saw it themselves with their own fathers, who were probably around when it first premiered 75 years ago and may have seen it in theaters with their own fathers. And given the themes of this movie, revolving as they do around an authority figure whose stern discipline of the men under his command is ultimately vindicated, I can definitely see the appeal this movie has for dads, even those who aren't veterans, though its unvarnished love for the United States military (the Marine Corps especially) has also undoubtedly boosted its reputation there. What's more, while it's very much a movie of its time, it's also a very well-made war movie with two standout battle sequences and a lot of interesting character moments in between that help set up the drama in those battles, anchored by a great performance by the legendary Wayne in the kind of role that defined his image and got him his first Oscar nomination. It's still a classic, and one I can see enduring for another 75 years among both fathers and the US military.
John Wayne is Marine Sergeant John Stryker, a man with a name out of an action movie, video game, or comic book from the '80s or '90s and a backstory to match (or at least about as much as one could get away with under the Hays Code). He's a harsh commander of the squad he leads, and also a man with personal demons, an alcoholic whose wife left him and took their son and who seems to be taking out some of his issues on his men. Needless to say, his fellow Marines hate him and see him as a tyrant of a squad leader, feelings that Stryker reciprocates as he comes to see the Marines he's in charge of as a green, undisciplined rabble fresh out of boot camp who are dangerously unprepared for battle. It's not much of a surprise to say that, when these Marines face their first actual combat in the Battle of Tarawa, they very quickly realize that Stryker wasn't just a cruel, heartless bastard, but was actually trying to prepare them for the harsh reality of warfare. At Tarawa, the battle-hardened Stryker comes off as the only man in the squad who was actually ready for combat, while the men under his command make constant errors in judgment that get some of them killed or badly wounded, forcing them to shape up after the battle while on leave in Honolulu before they're shipped back into the meat grinder of the Pacific War, specifically to the famed battle in the title.
For all his public image and reputation as the paragon of mid-century rugged, stoic, conservative masculinity, from both fans of his who celebrate that image and people who are deeply critical of what it stood for then and now (and a reputation that he himself cultivated in his lifetime), Wayne's actual performances had depths beyond that, and this film, despite playing a key role in building that image, was no exception. He may not have had the most range, but he knew where his limits and strengths were as an actor, which allowed him to make the most of his image and occasionally play around with it. Here, Stryker comes across as a man who, the more we learn about him, seems like he threw himself into soldiering as a way out of a broken personal life, coming to see the men he commands on the battlefield as his surrogate family after his wife left him. He is ultimately the good guy trying to do right by his fellow Marines, as evidenced at Tarawa when they have to learn the lessons he tried to teach them the hard way, but he is a flawed leader who, before Tarawa, did little to earn the respect of those men, his alcoholism in particular having gotten him demoted recently and causing him to wind up blackout drunk while on leave in New Zealand, an affair that causes his men to see him as a hypocrite. In this, the comparisons between Stryker as a "father to his men" and a literal dad, especially the idealized patriarchs of the postwar era, become unavoidable. Stryker may know best, but he has to soften up and come to terms with some of his own vulnerabilities if he wants to earn the trust of his men, and not risk another situation like the one at Tarawa where he saw that everything he tried to teach them went in one ear and out the other. He's a hardass with a heart of gold, a more idealized version of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Full Metal Jacket whose "tough love" approach does in fact make his men into better Marines in the end but could probably stand to tone it down a bit, if for no other reason than to more effectively teach his men.
As an action film, it's clearly a movie of its time. A ton of unironic postwar 'Merica drips from nearly every frame, which can feel hokey watching it today but is still admittedly enjoyable in its own way, with me being of the opinion that the best propaganda is the kind that is proud and unashamed of the things it is standing for. A message delivered with conviction, as this film does, is a lot more persuasive than that same message delivered halfheartedly. Something that feels a bit more dated nowadays, though, comes in the effects department with the use of archival World War II footage for the battle scenes, a decision that on one hand guaranteed realism but on the other also let you know that Republic Pictures, even on one of its bigger-budget productions, had its roots in a collection of smaller indie studios that are often referred to by the self-explanatory name of "Poverty Row". That said, while the real-life war footage wasn't quite seamlessly woven into the film, it did fit remarkably well, and the action they did shoot for this was very well-done. Tarawa felt like a mess of a battle where the fresh recruits were constantly screwing up and had to be bailed out by an increasingly frustrated Stryker, Iwo Jima by contrast made them feel like a well-oiled machine who had learned how to function as both a unit and as individual Marines, and both scenes did a great job of establishing the lay of the land for the battles and the Japanese soldiers as a credible threat to the Marines.
The supporting cast were all outshined by Wayne, obviously, but they too made for a likable or at least interesting bunch, a group of men who all bring their own baggage to the table and have to overcome it if they want to become better Marines, my favorites probably being John Agar as the arrogant rich kid Pete Conway and Forrest Tucker as the tough guy Al Thomas who has old beef with Stryker. The biggest weakness was probably the romantic subplot with Conway meeting and marrying a woman named Allison in New Zealand. It felt like an afterthought, there simply to put a romantic image on the poster and broaden the film's audience, between the fact that Adele Mara didn't even bother with the accent and the manner in which she almost completely vanishes from the film after that scene. Given Stryker's own history with his wife, some more development there could've helped to flesh out both Conway and Stryker as characters, giving Conway something to fight for and reason to shape up while Stryker hopes that Conway doesn't make the same mistakes in his relationship that he did with his own. Instead, not only do we barely see Allison again, the subject of Conway now being a married man is only rarely broached after the Marines ship out from New Zealand.
The Bottom Line
While it's undoubtedly a movie of its time, Sands of Iwo Jima is otherwise a rock-solid war movie anchored by a Hollywood legend in his prime delivering one of his most iconic performances. It's worth checking out whether you're into history, the military, or action movies, if for nothing else than to see an exemplar of the kind of movie that generations of later American war films would find themselves responding to.

Kids on the internet wanting attention and demanding to be recognized as being special, some times I wonder what that feels like.
I was 15 before I had earned any sort of award I could call my own. I had the occasional part of a team award, there used to be a dance recital trophy somewhere before the Golden Child's beauty pageant ones came, but it's not the same.
But I finally did win something and it was for my art work. And it still feels good to have done that.
And now I've got to make my self actually photograph my art because the only thing standing between me and getting that done is me. Or at least my back because just standing is not a comfortable pastime.
Still on a bit of a Smallville thing and being reminded of the little bits and pieces from Imagination Land that have lasted for all these years. A good many of them I worked in to a more original thing in which I still haven't fully settled on a major plot point, but that's just how writing works.
Going to bring up something that spoils the first watch of season 2 but makes the rewatch sweet inbetween the pictures if you don't want to know.
It's about Lionel being blind (to John Glover's credit he studied up a bit with visually impaired people to do his best to bring an authentic representation) and how long he stays blind. Eventually we'll learn Lionel regained his sight but until he's called out on it we don't know when. So in the rewatch look for how many things happen because people think Lionel can't see them, and especially look for times Clark does something super. Then comes season 5 episode 19 and DAMN!
The fun of DVDs is having little extras like outtakes where Michael Rosenbaum goes in to kiss John Glover who's all FUCK YEAH while also not breaking character.
~make up story where John Glover buys a bald cap for his husband and eventually figure out which episode of Married With Children where Peggy doubles as a blonde belly dancer and instead of AL cheating he just brings home a blonde wig~
And all tho I still find Lana boring, everything I've ever seen her in she's the same person, I was right to not like Chloe and wish she'd get hit by a meteor or something.
Self, remember to listen to Michael Rosenbaum's podcast.

"You know you could just buy one of my movies, right? Or- I'm pretty sure I have them on my hard drive. At least one, you know the one with Liv and Luke-" Austin starts to say before getting cut off by your answering huff over the phone.
"Yes, because I enjoy watching one of my best friends getting railed by my boyfriend and one of my other friends. Makes total sense, babe." Your tone is biting and not for the first time Austin is reminded of why everyone nicknames you Viper after every time they're on the receiving end of this tongue of yours. "No, I want- everyone else gets to see you play with your cock, beg for mercy from Olivia all sorts of things. I just- I want to watch you. I want to only see you."
Austin sighs. "A personal tape?"
"I- I didn't think of it that way, but yeah. I wouldn't pay for it, obviously but you could give me that. One Night in Austin." You have to bite your lip at your own joke, it's not funny, really especially after knowing the details behind Paris Hilton's tape, but still you think it's a little funny.
"I was about to say yes, but I don't know if I can after that Paris Hilton joke." He pauses and tries to bite back his own laugh. "Give me a couple days, okay? Three tops, depending on the mail."
"You're sending it via the mail? Are we in the 90s?" You ask incredulously, shaking your head at the phone.
You can actually hear Austin's shrug and picture his face. "No, but if you want something private for only your eyes, I have to go low-tech."
After all, he's got enough of a following that he doesn't put it past anyone on the web to somehow hack into his email and get the video. He's seen it happen with his ex and he's seen it happen with so many people in the industry. Better safe than sorry. You hum in acknowledgement before letting the topic go.
When the mail arrives on Saturday you're excited, it comes in an unmarked envelope with Austin's looping handwriting writing out your address and the note attached simply says "for your eyes only".
It takes you a minute to set up your blu-ray player to play the DVD but when you do you settle onto your bed and watch your boyfriend wave at the camera, grinning his signature grin that he reserves only for you.
"Someone wanted a show, a private video without paying." He smirks, moving to show off how he's completely naked. "She's lucky I'm kind of in love with her."
You can't help but laugh at the comment before you focus on what he's doing. You notice he's already hard, leaking and that he almost looks like he had been playing with himself before he turned on the camera. Your hand moves to between your legs, slowly starting to rub at your clit, you think you should grab your vibrator but knowing how Austin is- how his cock already looks, you don't think this is going to be long.
"I've already been playing with myself, baby." His hand moves to stroke his cock, hissing as his thumb brushes the tip. "Been telling myself that my girl wants to get a show and I know what she'd like. What she likes when we're together." He pauses and grips his cock a little tighter. "Been wanting to come for a little bit already. If you were here you'd be edging me for hours, wouldn't you?"
He's not lying and you know it, as much as you enjoyed being edged by him- seeing his relief after you let him come was something else. Seeing how his mouth would fall open with whimpers and sighs did something else. Your breathing quickens as you feel your cunt getting wetter, feel your juices starting to pool as you watch him.

you read your lines so cleverly and never missed a cue
fandom: austin butler | elvis ( 2022 )
rating: M, though occasionally this just slides into X, honestly y’all this is a lot of smut with a plot. So minors, shoo shoo.
relationship: austin butler/reader, elvis/priscilla see the warnings. really read them, you need to for that last bit to make sense.
word count ( this part ): 5.1k. i don’t think they’ll all be like this. either that i’m going to write basically the war and peace of reader insert for this fandom.
warnings ( overall, just so you don’t start this and stumble into something several parts in ): daddy kink, age difference ( austin is his normal age during the time frame of the fic, reader is almost a decade younger, no one is underage ), character bleed, talk of poor treatment of subs, talk of sub drop and subspace with them also being entered, dom/sub, choking, collars, possessiveness, a pretty unhealthy relationship that likes to masquerade as a healthy one, zipper riding, slapping of various body lower body parts, bdsm, oral ( f and m receiving ), public sex, slight sugar baby/sugar daddy elements but it’s not quite that. ALSO THE BIG C VIRUS IS A PLOT POINT. i’m probably missing some but if i did they’ll probably come up later.
author notes: so eventually this fic gets to it’s original point which was that @floralcyanide saying something about ass slapping during the priscilla and elvis scene in the bedroom before he ends up going to the international and we all cry. @sassy-ahsoka-tano really wanted that fic and i was like I’M GOING TO DO IT. then @satninbeaulieu and i went a little buckwild. a lot buckwild. seriously if y’all saw our chat together. when i tell all of you that this fic is basically everything including a kitchen sink i’m not necessarily lying. but please, seriously don’t ignore the warnings, this fic goes places and i want to make sure everyone is having a good time. also if you want to be tagged for this, message me because i will probably forget otherwise.
also! credit to mpmarypoppins for the moodboard. i’d do it the fancy way with tumblr but as we’ve established i’m an old lady and would probably break something.
ALSO. because lord have merthy the lovie anon reminded me, this is definitely going to be a series and i'll link to the previous parts, all that jazz when the next parts come out.
You knew better than to fool around with co stars, you had seen enough issues crop up in the time you've been trying to slowly make your way into the industry that you know it's a bad idea. You swore to yourself after the last time you would never date or fool around in any capacity with someone you are starring in something with. Then you met Austin Robert Butler and everything changed.
He was always on the outskirts of your knowledge, the guy who you've seen in all these shows but not someone you connected with a guy almost a decade older than you. The irony of your age difference didn't escape you, how could it, a nearing 30 year old would be pretending to be in love with an almost 21 year old when the real people had almost the same difference albeit in a creepier fashion. The idea of you getting the part is not one you considered in depth, you had seen your competition and when you arrived at the building you had actually run into Olivia Dejonge who looked like something had maybe gone wrong. You didn’t dwell on it, because you knew that way would lead you to messing up and this is important. You had to focus on the task at hand, because truth be told you were probably going to be crushed if you didn’t get this part. You might not look identical to Priscilla but then again, from what you remembered of Austin and from what you’ve seen even with dyed hair, he didn’t exactly scream Elvis Presley to you. In fact he kind of screamed the nervous unassuming guy that should be famous because all young girls love him but there’s also about fifteen of him that pop up every few years. He was pretty cute though and maybe that might have influenced your decision to audition. You wanted the part but were far too nervous until they announced the lead and what was the harm in shooting your shot.
You opened the door slowly and peeked your head in to see Baz and Austin talking about something. They both stopped and turned to look at you, Baz with a smile and Austin with a head tilt that you felt was mildly questioning, but with how his eyes roamed your body when you fully stepped into the room maybe you read the questioning look wrong, perhaps it was just initial confusion. You started to fiddle with your ring with a dove on it before anyone spoke.
“Y/N!” Baz called, motioning for you to sit in the chair in front of him and Austin. “Come in, I was just telling him about you.”
Your lips quirked up into a small smile, “all good things, right? I don’t think I’ve done anything that embarrassing lately."
“All good things, Y/N, I don’t think Baz has it in him to say a bad thing about any of the people who’ve come in today.” Austin answered before Baz really even had a chance to open his mouth. He still stared at you over his glasses as if you were the most fascinating person on the planet though and from what you had seen, that wasn’t usually his MO, honestly the whole thing was kind of weird. But you figured it might have just been the way he was sizing up his potential romantic leads. You had to shake your head for a moment before looking at Austin again.
“I don’t know if I should take that to mean a good thing or not. But if from what I’ve heard about you Mr. Luhrmann, I’m in for a bumpy ride if I get the part, maybe it’s just your way of buttering us all up.” You quipped, trying to not stare at Austin.
The director grinned and laughed slightly. “I’m afraid you might have caught me, Y/N, but with any luck I’ll still be able to show you that it’s not nearly as bumpy of a ride as some would lead you to believe.”
You couldn’t help the way you shrugged as you sat in the chair opposite of Austin. “I’m going to hold you to that if that’s the case.” You paused and raised an eyebrow at Austin. “Do I have something on my face, Mr. Butler? It’s a little rude if you didn’t tell me.”
He opened his mouth once, twice, and then swallowed as he looked you up and down before he finally answered his voice sounding a little deeper than it had been when he previously spoke. “Sorry, you’re- You’re the first girl I’ve seen today that just made me pause. And your skirt rode up a little. If you want me to point out something that’s wrong.”
Your eyes widened as you opened your legs just a bit to shimmy the offending fabric down. “I’m so sorry, this was the first thing I grabbed. Should have known better. Pants, always the better option.”
Austin for his part let out a low chuckle when he responded back that you swear sounds more like Elvis Presley than is necessarily possible for someone who you know regrettably is from California. “Not when you want something underneath them.”
"Who told you that you had to take off pants if you want something underneath them, Daddy. I’d hate to see what happens when you can’t get them off.” You mouthed off quiet enough that Baz couldn’t hear you and but Austin could. You looked him up and down before settling on his lap to attempt to prove your point. This was weird. This feeling was weird, you’re not usually this mouthy to anyone, let alone someone who- no, Austin Butler is not a dom, no, you’re just being bratty to a sub or a switch or maybe someone who isn’t even the scene.
Baz looked between his two potential leads and tilted his head. He knew he needed to give them a warning that they were about to start the chemistry test, but honestly, Baz felt he was already interrupting something between both of you. Still, you needed to not be in a chair, Austin could probably stay in his, but you need to be on the floor, he needed to see what exactly that would look like from a blocking perspective without the set at first. “Y/N, could you get on the floor, right where you are, just on the floor instead of the chair. Priscilla’s-”
“Supposed to be on the floor for this, I saw.” You finished for him before slowly making your way to the floor. Austin eyes followed you and you shivered slightly.
You had felt kind of this way once upon a time when you had fooled around with your older costar right around the time you turned eighteen. He had been married and you really shouldn’t have but everyone always says that the girls with daddy issues always have a daddy kink and maybe you weren’t the exception to that fake rule. The thing was that your co-star had been a Daddy, or at least a dominant when he didn’t try to be your Daddy, whereas when you look at this idiot in front of you no part of him screams that. In fact he looks like at best a switch, maybe a pretty bratty sub, dressing like a boho Professor Elvis Presley, flannel on the top and fitted slacks at the bottom with glasses that wouldn’t look out of place on your mother’s face. Yet your brain was telling you the opposite, your brain zeroed in on how his thigh was tensing up and how you could see his hand and his foot stopped doing a nervous shake it had been doing for almost the entire time you’ve been in the room. Was he reacting like this because you got down on the floor? You shifted a bit, adjusting your skirt once again before settling on the floor, your legs folded off to the side underneath you and you looking up at Austin. You could see his eyes widen just a hair and you heard the exhale that forced its way out of his lungs but- no. No, he wasn’t a- he- he was always following Vanessa Hudgens around like a puppy of a man, there wasn’t a- no you were not going to follow your brain down this path. You were a professional, there was time to dwell on these thoughts when you weren’t at his feet and feeling more comfortable than you had in almost half a year.
“Baz, does she have to be on the floor, I mean this is a chemistry test-” Austin started, staring at you with an intensity you do not want to place but your brain is filing away anyway. You played with your ring as you listened.
“I want to see how this would look- go with it Austin.” Baz said, motioning for the two of you to begin.
All the lines in the beginning were yours, you knew this going into it but you had been prepared to just walk around saying them, you had a whole motion that you had planned. You adjusted it though, careful to not hit Austin as you did. But not hitting Austin required looking at him for an extended period of time and that was beginning to be a problem as your eyes wanted to focus on his fingers- God they were long- on his lips and was he always this attractive. Focus.
“He’s just really lonely and quite frankly so am I. And they didn’t really know what to say after that so I went to bed.” You leaned a little up into Austin’s lap when you said the line knowing fully well that wasn’t in the script but it felt right to do. Austin was looking at you in a way you weren’t too sure how to describe. It’s acting but there almost feels like there’s an added bit to it, that it’s just Elvis looking at Priscilla but it’s also Austin looking at you and- you could suddenly understand how she would fall head over heels for a guy ten years her senior. How she could be so obsessed with him and how even after his death she could still be so linked that she's not Priscilla Beaulieu she's Priscilla Presley.
Austin huffs out a laugh as Elvis and leans down, almost close enough to kiss you and reaching out almost like he wants to pull you in for one. “I have never met anyone like you.”

good girls clean up their messes
summary: austin didn't used to have a housewife kink and neither did you. funny how life-uh- finds a way to change that. fandom: austin butler rating: m pairing: austin butler x female reader word count: 2100 warnings: housewife kink. unprotected p in v ( though can be read as committed relationship birth control situation ). cleaning kink? minor breeding kink. praise kink. brief mention of the pandemic and how austin was a recluse for a bit. author's note: welcome to day 25 of kinktober, housewife kink with austin butler. this was fun. truly i'd actually have written more but i had this view of cleaning in my head vs anything else. so honestly, anyone asks and i'll write a whole big long thing about it but for now, enjoy this little tiny thing. also thank you @pennyroyalcreep for being the one to ask for this. i had hoped someone would choose austin for this kink vs anyone else so i was pleased as punch about it when you did.
You were never made to be a housewife, you've told Austin this on more than one occasion. Even when you first met him and were first talking to him, you told him that despite how perhaps you looked it, all warm and inviting, it wasn't your sort of style. Life had a funny way of changing those things sometimes. It started out slow, after all you were the one with a faintly normal nine to five-ish job, he was the one who had to jet across the world half the time. It made sense that you would keep where you were living and he at least- stopped by clean. You weren't a heathen, you knew how to make your house look presentable. The first time Austin had come back from being away for a while was the Elvis press tour and he had been expecting to see the house in some sort of disarray, maybe you hadn't been keeping up with the laundry or maybe their were dishes piled up in the sink. Instead, what greeted him was his girlfriend- the woman he fell in love with when the world went to shit, he became a goddamn recluse for six months, and everyone had let things fall by the wayside- in her pjs doing the dishes with these stupid little green gloves that in your own words- "kept me from getting dirty while cleaning".
All Austin could think about when he saw you that way is making you as dirty as he could. His teeth bit at his lower lip, picturing you taking off those gloves, making a show of it as he just sank to his knees and showed you just how much he appreciated your effort to keep the place clean. In fact, that had been what he decided to do the moment he wrapped his arms around your waist and you had let out a small gasp at his clothed erection.
It got worse after that, with him finding every excuse to just watch you clean and you finding that you didn't mind. You wanted to show Austin how you could keep things going, wanted his praise telling you how good you were, how he had the best girlfriend that he'll marry when he gets just a minute to himself. How you made everything so clean only for him to dirty it up with you. How you clean up the kitchen when the two of you cook knowing fully well he wants to have his dessert on the table, spread out on the tablecloth, chasing your pleasure higher and higher until he has to suck on your clit just so in a way that has you almost breaking the table when you come back down to Earth with a thump.
Bikeriders is- complicated when it comes to him coming home and you hate it, it's led to you having to show him FaceTime videos of the clean bedroom and the dishes and him forcing them to let him take a break because he just wants to eat dinner with his girlfriend. It's led to praise being over text and over the phone with him stroking his cock and you curling your own fingers inside yourself or using that one vibrator Austin hates. You miss him and he misses you just as much if his moans are anything to go by, if his grunts and whispers of your name are anything to go by.
It's a Saturday and you find that there's more than a bit more dust in the house than you'd like, that and you've let the glass door leading out to the backyard remain a little too dirty for your liking. Austin had mentioned the possibility of being able to fly in for the weekend, something about an award or a round table discussion but he hadn't told you when he'd be coming in. You take a chance on him coming in early, choosing to be a little silly and wear a French maid costume you had bought for yourself last Halloween and turn on your cleaning playlist, allowing the mix of electroswing, rock and jazz fly through the air as you got started on your efforts. The door is easy enough, done in about thirty minutes and left to settle before you would go back and see if you missed any spots. Now came the hard part, the dusting that usually would have you sniffling by the end of it but you hoped it would be different this time.
Your wish is granted, just not in the way you planned for it as Austin opens the door to the house and walks in only to find you bent over, no underwear under the costume you're wearing and he has to bite his lip to swallow the groan that threatens to escape him at the image and the knowledge. He knows perfectly well how engrossed you get in your music when you're cleaning, having once snuck up on you and swayed to the beat of the music for what felt like ten minutes- it was only five- before you realized his presence and had abandoned your task. You're near the window you had just cleaned, dusting the bottom part of an end table nearby and Austin drops his bags quietly, allowing himself to sneak up on you until you feel his hands grip your hips. The gasp that leaves you is closer to the breath leaving your body, especially as Austin uses his grip to pull you into a standing position, feeling just how hard you've already made him.
"Hey baby." He murmurs into your ear, kissing the side of your neck and nipping at your earlobe. "No panties and you're dusting in this. You love painting such a pretty picture for me, don't you?"
The voice you have, the one that normally snarks at him leaves your head right in that exact moment knowing fully well you need to use it. Your answer is predictable because of it. "I have to make sure my hardworking man comes home to a nice clean house." You swallow and shake your head a little, ignoring how Austin's hands are sliding up your torso, making their way to your chest. "I've seen how messy his hotel rooms can get."
His laugh vibrates against your back and the noise slips into one ear only to settle in your brain, you missed hearing that laugh in person. "Low blow. Valid, but is that any way to treat me after all this time?"
A giggle leaves your mouth unprompted as you try and focus on dusting once more. "Yeah, maybe just a little."
He hums as an answer to your sass, cupping your breasts as he grinds against you slowly. "Want to fuck you, baby. Want to make a mess of you while you clean."
Your breath quickens just slightly as you grind back against him, allowing you to feel the roughness of the fabric of his pants against your bare ass before you pull away, smoothing down your skirt. "I've still got to dust around the door, Austin."
The noise that comes out of him when you moves sounds like a growl as he pulls you against him again. When he speaks it comes out almost as a whine. "I can just flip up that skirt while you're dusting, baby. Promise I won't make you smudge the nice clean window with your body. Just want to fuck you against the door."
You know your neighbors can likely see what Austin's doing, see how he's slowly pinning you against the door, the front of your body pressed against the cool glass, giving you some relief from how hot just having Austin pressed against you is making you feel. Your answer comes out in a pant.

treat me nice
summary: your boyfriend has a two new kinks he didn't quite realize until elvis. the pair of you explore them.
rating: M, once again minors, under 18 please go far away from this.
word count: 4450. we are not talking about it.
warnings: feminization to a point? it's austin in lace underwear, it technically applies. dom/sub dynamics. orgasm denial. use of the words baby boy, mama, angel, sweet boy and ma'am. squirting. oral (f recieving). use of the word snowman as a safe word. that might be it, i don't necessarily know what applies here.
author's note: this is @floralcyanide's fault through and through. basically i read just friends and was like damn i owe you the lace panties fic now. then it turned into inexperienced sub austin (because the efc server is a bunch of heathens!!) as well and i just went mildly feral. i guarantee i will write out scenes from this relationship in this fic at a later date because i'm very fond of this relationship i wrote in here. also yes i am aware of that this is a bit much but unless austin butler himself comes and tells me to stop i shall do what i want. also no beta we die like men, etc. oh and yes i am working on my other stuff promise. but 30 with a kid and like a job and a half. time is not my friend.
It starts out innocently enough, you notice Austin touching his lace top while playing as Elvis like it's a new sensation he doesn't know what to do with. You can't blame him though, you remember your first time wearing silk and finding yourself touching it over and over again to feel it against your fingertips. After a while though, and once filming is starting to get farther and farther away from those lace tops you start to realize that Austin takes his time with your lace underwear more than he used to. He'll slowly slide it down your hips and almost play with the fabric in between his fingers as he does.
You have a theory the more it keeps happening, a theory that just maybe Austin likes the feeling of the lace on his skin. You're not sure if it's sexual in nature until one night when Austin asks you to leave your lace underwear on for a second while you grind against his naked cock. He eventually ends up pushing them to the side, allowing him access to your core but you saw how his eyes rolled in the back of his head after every brush of the lace against his cock.
That night helped to put things in perspective for you in more ways than one. You and Austin share everything when it comes to kinks and your sex life because that's what you should do in a relationship, but he had never mentioned this one. It had to be new and that sent a thrill through you because the pair of you hadn't had a new kink to explore together and while you love Austin there's a part of you that missed all the times you had done it with an ex.
You both have the night off, him from filming and you from your own job and you suggest watching a movie in bed cuddled up. Austin's head is in your lap as you choose to watch a film that doesn't have Elvis in it for once because you had to put your foot down somewhere. Paying attention to the movie isn't exactly your strong point right now though, instead you find yourself just allowing your hand to run through his black hair, occasionally scratching at his scalp just to hear the pleased hum come from his mouth.
"Aus? You still with me?" You ask hearing his breathing settle into something you only usually hear when he falls asleep.
"Yeah, baby, it's just that your hand feels nice." He shifts to allow himself to turn his head to look up at you from your lap. "It's helping me relax."
Oh.
You have never asked Austin if he knows if he's a dom or a sub or if he didn't even consider that scene, but that statement leaving his mouth as casually as it did gives you a clue. You had a faint inkling but this was almost confirmation. This was going to make the gift be even better than you thought. You wouldn't just be giving your boyfriend a gift, you might be giving your pretty boy a gift.
Your lips quirk up into a small smile as you use your grip to pull his face up just a bit so you can kiss him. "Is that right? You needed to relax a bit, baby?"
He nods bringing his hand up to touch your face. "You know how I can get too much in my head."
"Mmhmm, I do. I think you're still a little in your head. But I've got something for you if you let me get up." You move a little, giving him a cue to move his head and allow you to get up. He obliges and you quickly grab the box you had hidden under your bed. It takes you a minute before you're back and you hand it over to Austin. "Open it."
He holds the box in his hands and shakes it like a little kid before he pulls on the ribbon tying it shut. The lid pops off and he's presented with a pair of pink lace underwear in a shade not entirely dissimilar from the lace shirt he wore as Elvis. His voice is a little tight when he speaks. "You got this for me?"
You nod slowly, your eyes searching his face for some sort of tell bht for once Austin actually manages a blank face. "Mama has to treat her baby boy right. And he's been so good lately and so stressed out."
"I'm not-" He inhales sharply, shutting his eyes as he starts to fiddle with his hands. "I'm not your baby boy."
"Are you sure about that? Do you think you want to be?" You question knowing very well that you're toeing a very thin line that can either make Austin bolt or achieve a goal you both want.
"No." He pauses before letting out a shaky exhale, allowing himself to play with the fabric of the underwear in his hands. "Please?"
"Oh honey. Come here, let mama touch you. I've got you." You open up your arms to have Austin come into them only to find that he's chosen a completely different route of being on his knees in front of you with the underwear brushing against his cheek. Despite knowing that he wants you to dominate him, in the moment your brain shuts off and you find that you wish you had a camera, wanting to commit the image to memory.
Instead, though, you find your hand just carding itself through his hair not pulling but allowing yourself to just feel it against your hand. Austin for his part takes it to mean that you want him closer to you and he ends up just nuzzling at your thigh while looking up at you. "Can I touch you instead, ma'am?"
His question is almost to quiet to hear but you do and it causes a smile form on your face before you crouch down and hold his chin, placing a soft kiss to his lips. "You can, but how about we take this to the bedroom?"
His answering grin was such a marvel you swear if you weren't already in love with him you'd have fallen right there.
And so it went that way with the pair of you exploring in ways you didn't think were possible. It was exhilarating to say the least, watching Austin fall apart beneath you, taking care of him and exploring this goddamn lace kink that the film had given him. It's not hard to get him into some lace shirt for a photoshoot or for an interview but you haven't had nearly as much luck getting him into a pair of lace underwear outside your home. That is until Austin surprised you one night a few weeks before the Met Gala was supposed to happen.
"I want to try it." He states with zero context with his head on your chest in bed after a particularly interesting session involving a strap on, an ascot stolen from the Elvis set and edging.
"Try what? I know I'm not- I know I'm not your domme in this moment but, angel, you've got to provide me with more than the word it."
"The-" He bites his lip before exhaling the next words. "Underwear. The lace underwear."

My #1 post of 2022
she’d like to cuddle up to me
fandom: austin butler | elvis ( 2022 )
rating: M, honestly y’all this is a lot of smut with a big plot. So minors, shoo shoo.
relationship: austin butler/reader, elvis/priscilla.
word count ( this part ): just shy of 6k. this is apparently war and peace. i don’t know. it’s eaten my brain.
warnings ( this part ): daddy kink, age difference ( austin is his normal age during the time frame of the fic, reader is almost a decade younger, no one is underage ), dom/sub, choking ( implied ), zipper riding ( not quite, but sort of ), oral ( f receiving ), public sex. multiple orgasms but maybe not quite overstimulation. close but not quite.
author notes: so. once again, you want a tag, message me, i’ll tag you. or leave a reply and tell me and i’ll add you. beyond that, thank you to my partner in crime with this fic @satninbeaulieu and anyone else who has put up with me talking about this. also, this will probably make it’s way to ao3 at some point, don’t know when. maybe this week. we’ll see, my schedule always looks at my plans and laughs. also i hate the ending line of this, but i removed a chunk of this to save for next chapter or something later on. this was already too long, y’all. and not betaread because i live on the wild side.
this is part of the you read your lines so cleverly and never missed a cue series. specifically it’s the second. the first part is here.
The first thing you do when you get home is stalk Austin or more accurately you looked at a few- no more than 10- gossip blogs to try and check the status of Austin's relationship to Vanessa. It should worry you that your reaction upon reading that they broke up a couple months ago is sheer relief. Yes, maybe once upon a time the idea of being with a guy in a relationship didn’t phase you but you learned your lesson like a good girl and knew that you were better than being the side chick. You also knew that most of the time when you were the side chick it was because the guy was an asshole, but truth be told that was honestly most men. Maybe including Austin, but your mind hadn’t quite decided on him beyond being mildly mortified at what happened.
You had expected to hear something from Baz sooner rather than later but it took a full week before you got the call with him telling you that you had gotten the part. You put the phone on mute before letting out a shout of victory before unmuting it again and telling him thank you as he told you he planned on the first table read being about a week from now. Thankfully you hadn’t made any plans, so it was no real problem. The call ended without too much fanfare beyond your initial excitement and within about 5 minutes your phone dinged with an email containing the script. If you happened to dance while printing it out in your apartment no one could judge you.
The week long lead up to the table read had you trying to make arrangements to stay in Australia for the foreseeable future instead of your New York apartment. In between calls to iron out all your tiny details of getting most of your life transferred clear across the world you’d read the script. Everyone knew how Elvis’ story went so it’s not like anything in it was too new to you but you still found yourself enraptured enough that you audibly gasped while on the phone with someone causing them to have to ask if you were alright. Not your proudest moment.
Soon enough though you found yourself on a plane to Australia and in a car heading to the studio. You weren’t nervous before but the closer you got to the studio the more you felt your brain buzzing and your foot becoming jittery, tapping to an unknown rhythm. You took deep breaths, trying to steady yourself as you toyed with your ring. There was no need to be nervous. You had impressed Baz, you were a phenomenal actress. So what if Austin was going to be there and he had known you were going to be there before you did. So what? It was fine, it was going to be fine.
“That’s Cilla. That’s my Priscilla.” You bit your lip remembering hearing that through the door before- you weren’t going to think about that, you were not going to think about being on your knees in front of him, being on your knees with his cock in your mouth. You most certainly were not going to think about how you might have thought about it more than once since then.
This was going to be a problem, you already knew it which is what has you groaning into your hands as your uber driver pulls up to the studio to drop you off. “You going to be okay, ma’am?”
You look at him for a second before answering, moving your hand from your mouth. “Yeah, I’m going to be fine. I’ll tip you in the app, I totally don’t have any cash on me. Sorry.”
The driver shrugs. “It’s alright, you’re not in the US, not required but thank you.”
You hum as you exit the car and grab your bag, pulling down your dress as you did. The walk into the studio felt longer than you’d have liked it to, but you figure that was just because of your outfit and nervousness all balled into one tiny bit of stress for you. You’re early to the read and you’re expecting to have no one in the room when you arrive only to hear the one voice you were mildly dreading hearing.
“Y/N.” Austin says softly and a little breathlessly when he looks up at the noise of the door opening. Your heart skips a beat when you look up to see what he looks like. It’s not a Boho Elvis look this time. No, instead he went with something more put together, a simple white shirt half unbuttoned and black jacket with black slacks. Of course, the headband on his head and the glasses made it seem a little more soft, a little warmer and more gentle than it had any right to be. Truth be told, it had the tension leaving your body the longer you looked at him.
“Austin.” You smile slightly before giving him a little wave and tilting your head. “You’re here early.”
He laughs. “Yeah, if you ever meet Denzel Washington- promise, not trying to name drop, Dove- but if you ever meet him he’ll tell you it's a thing I do because I did it during Iceman Cometh. Started when my mom would drive me to auditions and now that I can drive myself around or call an Uber, it’s just stuck. Allows me to meditate on things. Focus myself.”
For not the first time since you did the chemistry read, you’re struck by how your brain just finds Austin fascinating. You have had one view of him and here he was turning it on its head- turning you on your head. It’s strange but you feel as if you might have found a fellow actor who might understand how you are. It’s method acting, but it’s not, it’s just allowing yourself to fall into a role and allow yourself to be in the moment as this person. And while you were running late according to your own time table, Austin and you were the only people there for the read. Even if you hadn't been on your knees for him not even two weeks prior, you’d have found his dedication a little attractive.
“I get it, Austin.” You twirl your dove ring as you speak. “I do the same thing. Though I’m normally the first person in the room. Didn’t know I’d have competition. Especially since I wanted the seat you’re sitting in.”
“You could sit next to me.” He pats the seat next to him with a grin as his voice pitches down just a bit. “Gotta have my best girl by my side. My ‘Cilla.”
You don’t normally laugh very easily but the sincerity in his voice makes you chuckle as you walk to take the seat next to him. “Your ‘Cilla. Guess that makes you my Elvis.” You pause and sit down, making sure your dress doesn’t ride up as you do. “My King?”
Austin’s eyes are focused on your thighs and your ass when you sit down and you notice but you choose not to comment just yet. He might have been able to be a dom but that look- no self respecting dom looks at you like that when you can make fun of it. He bites his lip and shakes his head. “Elvis hated that name, you know. Felt there was only one king and it wasn’t him. I have to agree with hating the name but that’s mostly because that’s not what I want you calling me.”
You raise an eyebrow at Austin, as you hear the door open another person coming in whose name you feel like you need to know but you haven’t met everyone yet so you suppose it can be forgiven. Your response is softer, more murmured so that they couldn’t hear you. “What is that supposed to mean? Do you have something else in mind, Mr. Butler?”
You’re teasing and you know it. You’re being a brat and you know it. You are suddenly aware that you have no underwear because you forgot it in your rush to get out of your apartment early. You feel faintly like an idiot with this knowledge but your face does not betray any of these things, instead choosing to remain blank, looking at the door as another newcomer comes in. For his part Austin’s only reaction is a slow inhale and exhale before he speaks. “Well it’s not Mr. Butler if that’s what you think. Something that starts with a d.”
The first response that comes to you is dick followed closely by dumbass and then Daddy. Your tongue darts out to lick your lips as you decide to throw him a bone. “Dumbass? Duke? Daddy?”
At the last word, his arm migrates to the back of your chair and he pulls you in a little closer. “Third time’s the charm little dove.Though, dumbass? I’m hurt.”
Despite your better judgment you shift a little closer to Austin, scooting your chair over just a hair. “That’s the least offensive name I could call you, Butler. It’s also true if you think I’m calling you Daddy. Remember, we had this conversation the last time. Was my blowjob that good that you forgot everything before it maybe a little after it?”

MASTERLIST
—————————————————
Although I’d been inside (Y/n)’s apartment several times now, I couldn’t say I’d ever actually looked much at my surroundings. It felt strange to admit that, mostly because I felt like I was doing something wrong; like I was a traitor to my job.
But then again, it felt worse to try to profile her. The few times I had made it obvious, she had made it very clear it was unappreciated. I could understand why.
So, before we even got to her door, I tried to quiet the voices screaming in my head, telling me to look for clues to all the unknowns about her. It wasn’t because I was expecting her to be hiding anything; I just wanted to know everything about her.
I could simply wait for her to tell me, though. We had all the time in the world, right?
“Laura, I’m home!” She called out immediately after breaching the entrance, following the exclamation with a very hurried request. “Spencer is here so please don’t be weird!”
The response was a calm, steady series of footfalls down the hall. The girl stuck her head around the corner, peeking at the two of us with a devilish grin.
“Pleasure to finally meet you, Dr. Reid.”
I told myself I probably shouldn’t be this nervous. If she was friends with (y/n), she was most likely a decent person. But let’s just say women around that age had never been particularly kind to me. They brought to the surface a lot of memories I’d tried very hard to bury.
She didn’t put her hand out to shake, which told me they’d already probably talked about me more than I’d have liked. ‘Wait,’ I thought to myself, ‘Is it okay to profile her roommate?’
“I’m going to go get a basket together. Wait in the living room, my kitchen is a disaster.”
Before I could argue, she had already disappeared, leaving me stranded in the hallway with her roommate who looked ready to cause trouble. I just hoped it wouldn’t the kind that revolved around me.
She waved a hand in front of her, motioning for me to make my way into the living room. Once we were there, she immediately took a seat, but I remained standing. Felt better to be able to escape.
The silence was awkward and suffocating. I could feel her staring at me, but she wasn’t saying anything. It felt wrong to look back.
“She says you read people for a living.” Her voice had a hint of skepticism in it I’d grown used to. “Sounds kind of like what psychics say.”
“Yeah, we use a lot of the same strategies, too. They just aren’t as honest about it as we are.”
“What do you see here?”
That was what got me to turn around and face her. She looked so comfortable, curled up on the couch.
“Pardon me?” The question caught me off guard, even though it shouldn’t have. I’d heard it so many times.
“What does our apartment say about us?” She asked, clearly not understanding why it was an inappropriate thing to ask. Or more likely, just didn’t care. Curiosity is a powerful thing.
I cleared my throat before looking back away and saying, “I agreed not to profile (y/n).”
“Well, can you at least tell which stuff is hers?”
I’m sure she was just checking to see if I was legitimate or just scamming her. Maybe she was checking to see if I was too good at it.
She didn’t need to worry. (Y/n) could handle herself. She wasn’t tricked easily. In fact, most of my intrigue and concern surrounding her unknowns was just how good she was at hiding things.
It wasn’t until I had registered that question and was staring at her walls with a newfound sense of purpose, that I realized how little I knew about her past. Then again, I don’t really care about her past.
It had made her who she was today, and that was the woman I loved.
My fingers brushed over old, cracked plastic on DVD cases displayed on a shelf beside the console center.
I didn’t even notice I was smiling at first, realizing that she’d kept the physical cases despite all the streaming services. She clearly still used the discs, too.
“These... are hers.”
“How can you tell?” The response in the form of a question told me I was right, and only made me feel even more deeply. Despite my greatest efforts to not look so excited by something so silly, I turned back around with my lips still curled in an awkward smile.
“Educated guess. Adrenaline.”
“What?” The confusion in her voice reminded me that she wasn’t aware of one of my deepest personality flaws.
“Research shows that only about 10% of the population are so called ‘adrenaline junkies,’ people who enjoy roller coasters and horror movies. It’s more often men than women, but it’s hard to tell because of the way we’re socialized.”
If I had turned around to face her, I probably would have seen the dead stare she was giving me during my rant.
“Regardless, people tend to either love horror or hate it. So, I considered the fact that (y/n) seems to enjoy things like... sneaking into bars with fake IDs and… other risky behavior.”
Well, that was close.
“But what really gave it away was the fact they’re not dusty, which means they’re still being used despite all of these movies being available on streaming services I know for a fact she uses. Considering how patient she is with my own Luddite tendencies I just figur—“
“Wow.”
The word cut off my train of thought, and I realized that I had barely breathed since I’d started. Wincing in response to the dumbfounded look on the poor girl’s face, I gave a nervous chuckle.
“Sorry. I’m rambling, aren’t I?”
“A little bit,” she said with her own little pity laugh. I’m sure (y/n) had told her enough about me that this wasn’t that big of a surprise.
“I do that when I’m nervous.”
“You shouldn’t be nervous,” she said like it was the easiest advice in the world, “You’re right about her, you know.”
Staring down at my feet, I wondered why the confirmation from her roommate meant so much to me. I hadn’t been actively trying to figure out things about my girlfriend — it felt wrong. But for whatever reason, knowing I had the ability to figure it out meant more when it was about her.
Laura laughed again, craning her neck to look around the corner before she quietly spoke. “She says it was the other way around, but she’s the one who convinced me to streak the lawn.”
Ah, the age-old tradition of UVA students. It was so easy to picture her stripping down to nothing in the dead of the night to prance down the length of manicured grass. My own personal little pixie.
If it was just an attempt to calm my nerves, it was working. Putting the focus back on (y/n) was a surefire way to bring out the best in me. She just had that effect on me.
“I am entirely unsurprised by this information,” I said before walking over to the other side of the room, noting the distinct lack of pictures of family among the shelves that clearly belonged to her.
Don’t read into it, I told myself, she might just keep them somewhere else.
“She also drank an entire water bottle of vodka during a full day of classes one time, just because I bet that she wouldn’t.”
I scoffed at the image of her drunk. It’d been a while since I’d seen her like that, and both times had been remarkably unique. She’s a dead giveaway; I was surprised she hadn’t been caught.
“I can’t say I relate to that,” I sadly admitted. Sometimes it was hard to realize that if I’d known her at the same age, we probably wouldn’t have gotten along. I used to hate people like that.
Granted, they had usually also hated me.
“She did mention you were a genius or something. I kind of figured. That’s her type.”
Well, that was information I couldn’t just gloss over. I furrowed my brow with a disbelieving smile, finally looking at the girl who was avidly watching my every move.
“Is it? I always pictured her with someone with more… Kinaesthetic intelligence.”
She gave me that look people give me when I said something weird, but continued nonetheless, “I don’t really know what that means, but she takes school pretty seriously. Honestly, probably a little too much. Part of why I dared her.”
“It’s strange to imagine her in class.” I hadn’t meant to say it, but once it was out there, I couldn’t take it back. And I was glad I couldn’t, because I was very curious about the answer.
“She’s the girl who knows all the answers and shuts down all the stupid guys trying to talk over her.”
I knew that those behaviors weren’t exactly favored in classrooms, having myself been the one at the brunt end of the bullying that followed.
“It’s pretty impressive.” She was being genuine when she spoke, and I was inclined to agree. At the same time the thought crossed my mind, I found a picture of her perched on the lap of the Thomas Jefferson statute.
God, I loved that girl.
“I bet she is.”
Almost on call, (y/n) poked her head into the room with wary eyes, looking at me as I awkwardly waved before looking back to her roommate.
“Laura, are you being weird?”
The girl rolled her eyes, but didn’t respond. Instead, she turned to me like it was my question to answer. Afraid to spoil any tenuous, newly formed loyalties, I shook my head no.
“Okay…” She only barely accepted my answer, “But if you say some dumb shit and get arrested, I’m not bailing you out.”
Briefly sticking out her tongue as she walked past me, she continued on her way. I couldn’t help but give that lovestruck, idiotic grin I always gave when she was around. If you’d told me I would’ve ever felt like this about someone who felt the same about me, I wouldn’t have believed you. Part of me still didn’t believe she could ever love me the same as I loved her.
Turning back to the girl cringing at the blatant intimacy shared in a simple glance, I immediately became awkward again.
“Don’t worry, I didn’t bring my handcuffs.” I joked, showing my hands in a strange display of innocence.
She… took a different approach.
“I know for a fact she has a few pairs in her room if you need one.”
A high-pitched whine nearly escaped my throat at the casual mention, and I cleared my throat and turned to look at her with a very unconvincing laugh. “W-what?”
“You have to know it’s impossible for her to keep her sex life a secret,” she droned with a bored expression, “I live one room over.”
“Right,” I nodded.
There was an extended, never ending silence as she just let me stew in my own discomfort. It didn’t seem to bother her one bit, because the longer I avoided her eyes the more she seemed to smile.
“I’m uncomfortable.” I finally admitted, and she just shook her head, running her hand through her hair before giving me one final hard look.
“You’re sweet. You make her happy. I appreciate that.”
My mouth scrunched in a humble half-smile, my hands finding their way back into my pockets as I tried to consider the reality I’d found myself in. Of all the infinite possibilities, I got to exist in the version of the world where I loved a girl who loved me back.
“It’s all her,” I finally said with a voice that crackled far too much for my liking, “I don’t do anything. I’m just the lucky one she decides to keep around.”
Laura flashed an approving grin, but then got up when she heard the familiar, happy feet beating down the hallway. (Y/n) burst out from around the corner, her arms full with a picnic basket and a blanket she clearly owned for just these occasions.
“Ready to go, babe?”
“Lead the way.”
I’d have followed her anywhere.
—————————————————
It was the perfect time of year for a picnic, despite Spencer’s insistence that there was no such thing. Once we were in the park, his whining dramatically decreased. Maybe it was the sunshine, or maybe it was the smile on my face, but he was certainly in brighter spirits.
He even let me rest my head on his lap, his legs crossed underneath me while he alternated between staring off at the trees slowly losing their color to autumn and my quiet contentment as I nibbled on an assortment of fruits.
There was no awkward silence or hidden darkness in this day, and even the sweetest strawberry couldn’t be more refreshing. To be here with Spencer, soaking in the late Summer sun, was all I could ever ask for.
But I was also eager to take advantage of the uncharacteristic softness between us. It wasn’t often we could share moments like this. Between his job and all our problems over the past few months, I wasn’t sure when we could be like this again.
“Let’s talk about something fun.” I blurted out, earning an intrigued look from my boyfriend. He readjusted his position, leaning back on his hands so he could look down at me easier.
“Okay, like what?”
“Don’t make fun of me…” The way he was looking at me gave me no hope he would actually listen to me, but I continued anyway, “I have conversation starters I looked up.”
He snorted while trying to suppress his chuckle. “Of course you do.”
Dropping my mouth open, I reached up to lightly smack him on the face for immediately doing exactly what I had asked him not to.
“What? Like you’re the epitome of sociable, Dr. Reid?”
He ran a hand through his hair, trying to stop the laughter that kept bubbling in his chest over something that was decidedly not that funny at all. We were just that stupid kind of happy where everything was wonderful.
“I’m just not surprised!” He reminded, then nodded for me to continue, “Go on, tell me one.”
“Tell me something you’re scared of.” I shot back, excited to hear the answer.
“The dark.” It was the most anticlimactic, stereotypical answer I could have imagined. It was my turn to scoff now, hardly believing the answer to be real.
“Seriously? You’re an FBI Agent, Spencer.”
“You told me not to make fun of you, but then you make fun of me? Unfair. I didn’t sign up for this scrutiny.” His legs started to move under me as he pretended like he was about to dump me from his lap and leave me here.
“Fine!” I shouted, reaching my hands up to grab his face. Although they fumbled awkwardly from my strange position, he took the time to lean to the side and kiss my palm lightly. “Favorite memory of the two of us.”
He blew out a long breath, his eyes squinted like they always did when he was in deep contemplation. But something told me something actually jumped straight to his mind, but he was holding it back for some other reason.
“That’s not fair. There are too many.”
I wasn’t falling for it. I flicked his nose before pulling my hand back, smiling at the way he jerked away like it actually hurt him. Giant baby.
“No cop out answers, old man. Favorite one!”
Spencer just sighed, letting his head fall back as he actually thought about what he was about to say for once in his life. I took the brief moment without his scrutiny to reflect on just how lucky I was to be able to see him like this.
“Okay. So, remember when we went to the bakery in Downtown?” He asked like I could have forgotten.
“Pauls? Yes, I remember.”
They’re legends in the area, but a total pain to try and get. You have to get there first thing in the morning and wait in a ridiculous line. But they were always worth it. Spencer had told me he’d never been, and I just couldn’t let such an injustice stand.
“While we were waiting in that ridiculous line, I remember looking at you and just seeing how excited you were for a donut, even at 7 in the morning.”
“That’s objectively the best time for a donut.” I interrupted with the most matter-of-fact tone I could emulate.
“Right,” he laughed, recalling how I kept reminding him of that fact while in line, “Well, we got to the front and before I could even talk, you had already ordered one for me.”
It took me a second to remember exactly what had happened. So much had happened since then, the memories were becoming muddled in my mind. But once I did remember, I smiled.
“Chocolate frosted with sprinkles. For the child in us all.”
“That’s it.” His voice had gotten soft so quickly, his hand brushing over my cheek while he played with the strands of hair blowing back over my face. “That’s my favorite memory.”
If I didn’t make a joke of it soon, I was scared my heart would burst.
“Really? That’s your favorite memory? Of all things?” I asked with a playful grin, clasping both of my hands around his and holding it against my chest.
“Yes.” For a man of so many words, it meant so much more when he spoke so little. You could feel the truth in the way the sound hit your ears.
Even as I bit on the inside of my cheeks to withhold my excited giggle, he was looking at me like I was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen.
“Spencer, that’s so lame.”
In that way he always did, he so charmingly replied, “How fitting for us.”
“Rude,” I muttered, finally finding the strength to sit up from my position on his lap. The world only spun for a second as I reoriented myself. He seemed equally grateful, stretching his legs out in front of him.
“What else do you want to make fun of me for?” Spencer said with a smile, watching as I reached into the small basket and pulled out a small clementine. I ran through the questions in my head, trying to decide which one to spend our limited time on.
“Okay,” I decided, “What did you think the first time you saw me?”
His face scrunched up with the leftover embarrassment from our very first meeting, during which the first thing he had ever done to me was lie. It had been a flattering one, though.
As I popped a section of the small citrus fruit into my mouth, I noticed the way he licked his own lips. The sight caused butterflies to flurry in my stomach, and I wondered which was more appealing to him; the mouthwatering scent of oranges or the idea of slipping something else between my lips.
“I thought... that you were beautiful and intriguing. And I was right.”
I got my answer to my preceding thought, because he had quickly wrapped his hand around the back of my head, pulling me into a kiss with crushing force. For someone who wasn’t the biggest fan of public displays of affection, he certainly didn’t mind kissing me like this.
Despite how deep and hard it was, it ended far too quickly. I sucked on my bottom lip as he left, staring up at him with wonder and devoted attention.
“Why was I intriguing?”
He clearly hadn’t thought that far ahead, probably hoping that the kiss alone would distract me from asking any more questions about that night. Unable to get out of it now, though, he just shrugged with a nervous chuckle, “You... were looking at me?”
My laugh, on the other hand, was full bodied as I pushed him away from me with just enough force that he actually almost toppled over.
“That was it? Because I looked at you?”
It seemed so silly, but I could tell by the way he responded that he meant it. He had told me before, on that night actually, that he wasn’t used to women showing him attention. But surely, he must just be missing it. He was an amazing man.
“I don’t know. There’s just something about you. He paused between his words, taking a deep breath before attempting to work through his thoughts, “Like... like things just revolve around you. You have this intense gravitational pull that just told me that I had to get closer to you or I wouldn’t be able to survive.”
Fighting back the blush quickly forming on my cheeks, I struggled to maintain my typical aloof nature. I couldn’t have him getting a swelled head just because he could string together a couple cute sentences.
“Are you calling me a star, Dr. Reid?”
“I guess I am, yeah.” He hit me back with that confidence he rarely displayed outside of our play. I loved to see it like this. It made me feel like I was actually with him, rather than any manicured person he’d created to suit the needs of the current situation.
“If you felt that strongly about it, then why lie and say you weren’t checking me out? I could’ve left, you know.”
“But you didn’t.”
“Yeah, but I thought about it.” It wasn’t entirely a lie. There had been a couple of times during that night that I almost cut my losses—admitted that we were just too different to ever be compatible. Thank god I’d ignored that flawed instinct.
“I wouldn’t have blamed you. Have you looked at your boyfriend? I’m so weird.”
The ease with which he flouted his eccentricities brought a smile to my face, and I shook my head as I tried to fight back in his defense. “You’re not that weird.”
“Are you joking? Look at yourself. You’re—You’re normalcy personified! No, actually, you’re not even that. You’re this... beautiful, smart, talented young girl and I’m just an old man who’s hoping to keep you around long enough that you forget you have better options out there.”
The longer he spoke, the more my jaw dropped open. Eventually, I had devolved into a fit of laughter.
“Dr. Reid, you can’t seriously be telling me that you think I am out of your league!”
“I mean—!” he started, but I wasn’t going to allow him to even entertain the thought. I clapped my hand over his mouth, nearly climbing onto his lap to hush any noises he attempted to make.
“No way!” I shouted, “Shut up!”
Instead of trying to wrench my hand away, his hands came to rest on my hips. I could feel the smile spreading across his cheeks under my fingers.
“You’ve got to be kidding me, Spencer. Fucking FBI Agent with three PhDs. Get out of here.”
He began bouncing his leg under me, and when I looked down to see what he was doing, I was shocked to feel a wetness on my palm. Ripping my hand away, I looked at my hand to see the swipe of saliva over the skin.
“Did you just fucking lick me?!” I screeched, unable to comprehend what had just happened, staring at my boyfriend with a shit-eating grin on his face. “I touched the ground with this hand! What are you doing?!”
“Yeah, I’m definitely going to rinse my mouth with bleach when we get home. But it was worth it, to see that look on your face.”
He went to wipe his own face, but I still couldn’t get over the fact my hand was fucking wet. So I took my hand once more, wiping the residue of his own spit back over his cheek. Surprisingly, he just let me do it, laughing as he only slightly tilted his head back.
“Nasty old pervert,” I joked, rolling my body off him and sitting on own once more.
“You’re very mean when you’re nice to me.” Spencer pouted.
I was distracted, trying to get my hair to stay out of my face and mouth as the wind started to whip through the park. Still, I managed to say a few very important words of warning.
“Yeah, well, get used to it, bud.”
Taking pity on my obvious distress, he reached out to grab my arm, tugging me back over to him. “Come here, little girl.” he instructed while I crawled over on all fours to sit between his legs.
I was going to ask him what he was planning when I felt his hands begin threading through my hair. I sat patiently, recognizing the pattern he was weaving.
“... When did you learn how to braid hair? Did your mom teach you?”
“My mom has short hair.” It was an evasive, but truthful answer, so I didn’t press it. I was sure I would find out more about his family as time went on. I just had to keep reminding myself that we had all the time in the world to get to know each other.
“I never learned how to braid hair specifically. I’m just applying the same pattern I would with a knot or a puzzle.”
“How romantic.” I gasped, tucking my hands between my legs as I enjoyed the way it felt for him to play with my hair.
It was always bizarre, to consider the way he could be so soft in moments like this. Or rather, that he could be so far the opposite at other times. In my heart, he was always the kind, goofy man I had met that night at the bar.
But I’d seen him angry, depressed, and in pain. I’d seen him desperate and scared. Basically, the only way I hadn’t seen Spencer Reid was however he was at work. Part of me wished that I could; it was obvious he was good at it and, to a certain degree, enjoyed it.
Then again, when I know he does things like get shot at, it makes it a little bit harder to be interested in. I couldn’t imagine getting that phone call one day while they loaded him into the back of an ambulance... or worse.
“Ah, the things I do for love.” His calm, smooth voice tore me from the destructive thoughts and back into his warm embrace.
“Hey, Spencer, I have a serious question.”
“Well, that’s terrifying.” He joked, holding out his hand for my hair tie, which I happily gave him. I hated to admit that he did a better job at braiding my hair than I’d ever done. Freaking stupid genius stuff.
“When do I get to say it back?”
I swear, I felt a chill spread through the air between us. His entire body froze, his hands stuck mixed with the elastic as he tied off the braid.
It was an intense, unwelcome flashback to the second night I’d spent with him, when we had talked about things too serious, too soon.
Terrified, I immediately cut off anything he might have been able to say, muttering, “Never mind. Forget I asked.”
Letting my hair slip from his fingers, he let his hand drag along my spine. I wished I could see the look on his face, but I didn’t dare turn around.
“I’m sorry.” He said after another moment of silence, and it physically pained me the way the words fell from his lips.
“Don’t apologize,” I said in the cheeriest tone possible, trying to lighten the mood, “I just wanted to test the waters.”
With that, I spun around dramatically, noting the way his face lit up once it saw the smile on my own. “And they are frozen solid!”
He laughed at the enthusiasm I displayed, swiftly throwing his arms around me in a tight embrace.
“Well, I’ll just have to warm you up, then.” My whole body in his arms, he yanked me off the ground and onto himself. I struggled playfully under his arms, not paying any attention to the other people in the park watching our childish antics.
“Hypothermia is very dangerous, after all,” he lectured, “Let me take your temperature.” Burying his face in my neck, I felt the familiar overstimulation that accompanied frantic, light touches of my sides.
“Stop!” I burst with laughter, “You’re tickling me!”
The movements all halted, but only to be followed with a terrifyingly devious tone of Spencer’s voice. “You’re ticklish?”
“Don’t you dare—”
“Oh, I love this information.” And just like that, he began his onslaught. His fingers danced over every inch of my sides, his lips pressing quick, frenzied kisses against the underside of my chin. The harder I laughed, the more he continued.
“I hate you, I hate you, I hate you!” I screeched like a banshee, trying to slip from his hands or turn around—anything to get the upper hand again.
After nearly wrestling him, I managed to get both hands on his shoulders and shove him back against the blanket. The force with which we hit the ground knocked the air from his lungs, and he groaned at my body weight on his chest.
“Okay, okay! You win!” He yelled, holding his hands in front of me while struggling not to touch the ground with his head. “I’m not risking more surface area of contact with the ground to fight you.”
“(Y/n) emerges victorious!” I grabbed hold of both of his hands, shaking his arms with all my leftover adrenaline while I cheered myself on.
“Dork,” he muttered under his breath before he grabbed my sides, laughing at the way I instinctually jerked. I threw myself off of him to avoid the potential tickles, landing clumsily next to him. And Spencer, being the genius, recognized it as the perfect opportunity to pin me against the ground.
Wasting no time, he pressed the same instruments which had begun the great tickle war against my own lips. My hands found their way to his cheeks, pulling him closer as his tongue easily found mine. Just like it always did with us, it felt like the world was disappearing around us.
All I could feel, smell, taste, think, was Spencer Reid. His love and admiration flowed from him with ease, and I was happy to take it in. After a few minutes, we had to break apart. We might like a little bit of exhibitionism, but I was pretty sure neither of us actually wanted to tear the other’s clothes off in a park.
Could you imagine if people knew he was an FBI Agent? I was sure they already thought our age gap strange. But I didn’t care what they thought. Because right now, we were happy.
“I’m the dork you love, though.” I whispered against his lips.
“Indubitably,” he mumbled back, starting to laugh at the way the word sounded in our teenage love-like delirium.
“Now who’s the dork.” I teased as I smoothed my hands over his shoulders.
“Hm. Still you. And a little bit me, too.”
Laughter was bursting from me again.
“You have grass in your hair, idiot.” Before he could do anything about it, my hands were all over it, ruffling his hair wildly out of place. He just squeezed his eyes shut, letting me ruin any semblance of maturity or control from his appearance.
“Wow. Thanks for that.”
“You’re welcome.” I chirped, accepting the small peck he gave me before he started to retreat from his spot above me.
“You ready to head home?”
“Yeah, just about,” he sighed like it was a terrible thing to do. He hadn’t even wanted to come on this picnic!
“I promised to check you for ticks, after all.”
Ah, the real thing we were both looking forward to. Although, I was sure he was going to take it way too seriously for a few minutes before we devolve into sex on the bathroom floor.
“Mmm. I’m thrilled.” I replied honestly, struggling to sit up now that my body had already slipped into Spencer Reid is on Top of You mode. It was one of those rare moments when I wondered if there really was a female version of blue balls, because I was almost certain I had it.
“I have to stop at the bank first, though. I’ll go throw this stuff in the car and we can just walk over.”
“Sure thing, old man.” I huffed as I stood up, holding the much lighter basket while he collected the blanket. Once he took it all from me, I glanced over at the nearby bench with a pout.
“I’m going to miss you.”
“You’re cute,” he smiled, kissing my cheek like it were a more serious goodbye, “I’ll be right back.”
While I waited for him, I cautiously watched the large, dark clouds rolling over the horizon. They threatened to swallow the sunshine that we’d basked in less than hour before. I tried not to think anything of it.
It wasn’t a metaphor; it wasn’t an omen. It was just the weather.
Spencer must have seen the anxiety, because when he came back, he gingerly placed his arms around me from behind, resting his head on my chin.
“I guess we have good timing. It looks like it’s about to storm.” I absently spoke, my eyes still fixed on the sky.
“Yeah, typical finicky Virginia weather, I guess.”
I wasn’t sure if I actually heard it in his voice or made it up, but I swore Spencer was also trying to stop himself from thinking something of the rain. I was probably just being paranoid. It was just a storm. They happened.
“Well, let’s get going so you can cash your check in person like an eighty year old man.” I joked, grabbing his hand and dragging him back towards the exit to the park.
“That’s a bit of an exaggeration. There are other people my age who don’t trust cell phone banking transactions.”
“Are there, though?”
He just shook his head, deciding it wasn’t worth it to get into it with me. Typical young kids, he must have thought, so irresponsible. But he didn’t say it, just held my hand on the short, quiet walk to the ornate building on the corner of two busy streets.
I swung our hands dramatically back and forth, earning an unamused, but still playful, glare from him.
“Your age is showing,” he pointed out before licking his lips and avoiding my eyes. I glared right back before responding, “Your stick-in-the-mud-ness is showing.”
“Not a word. Not a phrase. Not a thing.”
He stopped our hands dead in their tracks as he crossed the threshold, and for a second, I thought he was going to seriously be a spoilsport. But right when I least expected it, he swung our hands again and I nearly smacked into another person.
We both laughed, with me blurting out a frantic, “I’m sorry!”
“So immature,” he chastised, shaking his head with disapproval.
“I can’t believe you. You are such an asshole!”
The familiar hum and beeping of the metal detectors threatened to dislodge memories from the back of my mind, and I shook my head to try to get rid of them again. Spencer glanced over with concern but didn’t mention it.
I was grateful. I didn’t want to talk about it. Once we had passed security, he settled into the line like he’d done it a million times before. But me, being a normal person who used my banking app to cash checks, felt strangely out of place.
Figuring it might be a minute, and that the ride home would be significantly longer, I decided to go get any residual dirt and grass out of my hair. After all, it would get in the way of our tick searching activities.
“Hey, I’m gonna run to the bathroom. Don’t go anywhere.” I pointed an accusing finger at him as my arm slipped from around his. His hand followed me until he couldn’t hold on any longer, an innocent, lovesick smile on his face.
“You know I could never leave you behind.”
As cheesy as it was, it still made me smile. My heart ached with the saccharine sweetness of his affections. I’d gotten so used to them so fast; I couldn’t even imagine a world without them anymore.
“Don’t miss me too much, Dr. Reid.”
“You know I will, little girl.”
That storm cloud feeling was brewing in my chest again as I pressed a kiss to my fingers, blowing it across the ever-growing distance between us. Why did he feel so far away so suddenly?
I tried not to pay it any mind, humming You Are My Sunshine and imagining Spencer’s terrible singing voice instead. Looking at my reflection, I realized why my cheeks had been getting sore. Because there, staring back at me, was a smile on a neutral face.
I don’t even know when it happened, but it hit me in that bathroom of a bank at 12:47pm on a Saturday that I had fallen madly in love with Spencer Reid. And it suddenly made sense, why he didn’t want me to say it yet. Because I hadn’t realized it yet.
But now I had, and it filled every cell in my body. The blush on my cheeks was evidence of just how much I needed to let it out, to scream it from the rooftops, or at least in the lobby of this old bank.
There were so few things that could overwhelm the emotions I was feeling and rob me of this moment. My brain rioted against any sign of darkness or despair, clinging to the hope that I would be able to tell him soon.
So, when explosive booms rang through the bank, for a long second, I tried to convince myself they were thunder.
But they weren’t. The storm had indeed come, but it wasn’t responsible for the sounds that caused my heart to tear in two and shatter against the floor. The people outside the room were not screaming at the wrath of God, displayed with lightwork in the sky.
It was not thunder.
They were gunshots.

Where do you reccomend to pirate sailor moon? You've made me wanna watch ^^
Oh my oh my! This is a very no-no question!
Honestly, I am obligated to say that all 5 seasons have been released on DVD and Blu Ray and are easy to find on Amazon etc etc and that doesn’t help people like me where amazon doesn’t deliver!
You can also IN THEORY watch them on the VIZ website? But again that’s not something I can access from my country!!!
https://www.viz.com/sailor-moon
There’s probably also an official youtube channel where you can legally watch the episodes or something I don’t fukken know because apparently I’m not allowed to do things legally.
SO! Other places you can watch Sailor Moon if you live in an ass-crack country like me and literally cannot access it legally despite being willing to u_u
For the 90s anime!
This is the most iconic of the Sailor Moon media! And the one most people know and are familiar with. It’s usually the first thing people think of when they think of “Sailor Moon”. There’s 200 episodes spread across 5 seasons (the first season, R,S, Super S, and Sailor Stars)
This site has all episodes both dubbed and if you scroll down a little you get the subbed versions as well.
DO NOT WATCH THE DUB!!! This is the original 90s dub and it’s.... not good....
https://sailormoonepisodes.com/
as well as
https://gogoanime.so//search.html?keyword=Sailor%20Moon
You can also find torrents of the show. I haven’t updated my files in a long time but there’s probably been a Blu Ray version uploaded somewhere. I recommend checking Nyaatorrent
For the movies!
If you want to starts with the 3 movies instead just to see if you’d like the show, none of them are as good as the show but it’s how I first got into the whole thing so they can’t be THAT bad! The first one is the most iconic but the second movie (S) is probably acknowledged as the best of the three. They’re kind of disconnected from the show so you need to know very little going in and it doesn’t spoil anything in the show itself nor do you need to watch the movies to watch the show.
You can find the movies subbed here
https://gogoanime.so//search.html?keyword=Sailor%20Moon%20movie
For the manga!
The source material that most adaptations are based on (although most modern versions tend to rely a little more on the 90s anime as... let’s be honest... the anime had much better ideas in a lot of places) There are several places where you can find the manga, however, unlike a mass manga website, I recommend a Sailor Moon specific site which will have given much more care to the translation of the material.
The best place I’ve found is the ever reliable Miss Dream
https://missdream.org/sailor-moon-scanlations/sailor-moon-manga-scanlations/
For the Live action series! (PGSM)
I was a fool for ever thinking the live action series would be bad just because the effects are terrible and the CG is laughable and they made Luna a plushie. It’s turning out to be a GREAT version of the story! I wouldn’t start with this one at all, but I really do HIGHLY recommend checking it out because it’s writing and characters are far better than they have any right to be in all honesty.
PGSM has never seen an official translation.
You can find fan subbed episodes at both Miss Dream as well as Sea of Serenity. They have different translated versions of the show so you can pick which one you like. (I’m watching the Miss Dream subs but I’m following a blog whose watching the Sea of Serenity subs and both are good)
https://seaofserenity.net/drama/downloads/
https://missdream.org/fansubs/pretty-guardian-sailor-moon/
For the Crystal Reboot!
I actually don’t recommend this one, but I’m gonna mention it anyway because it DOES have its fans. (but again... I... I don’t recommend this one at all X’D)
It’s only done the first 3 seasons of the story and honestly only season 3 is considered passable to me. Season 4 is gonna be released next year as a movie (or 2 movies? It’s unclear).
The reboot was supposed to be a manga-accurate adaptation rather than the 90s show which did a lot of its own thing (for better and worse). However, poor animation quality, weird changes to the story, and making the girls lose a lot of their personality and turning Usagi into someone who is more a damsel in distress than anything, it’s not a great version of the story. I’m only mentioning it out of obligation tbh.
Although apparently Season 3 isn’t so bad. But still :/
You can watch the official release on Crunchyroll
https://www.crunchyroll.com/sailor-moon-crystal
You can also find subbed episodes at the bottom of
https://sailormoonepisodes.com/
as well as
https://gogoanime.so//search.html?keyword=Sailor%20Moon
For the Stage Musicals! (Sera Myu)
The Stage Musicals are a funny thing, being not canon to any of the other versions. Sometimes they tell stories from specific arcs in the manga, sometimes they tell story that don’t feature anywhere else, sometimes they’re about the Sailor Senshi fighting Dracula and Adam’s first wife Lilith who want to turn the world into vampires. Dude I don’t even know XD
I wouldn’t recommend starting here either, as these are more like fun bonus content than anything else.
HOWEVER, the Musicals have something that none of the other versions had, which is “La Soldier” which all Sailor Moon fans are required by law to lose their shit over.
(La Soldier is BRIEFLY in the anime but it was not used to its full potential)
youtube
I don’t know if they newer musicals still use La Soldier tho.
You can find fansubbed versions of the Sera Myu shows at Miss Dream
https://missdream.org/fansubs/sera-myu-fansubs/
And Sea of Serentiy
https://seaofserenity.net/
Sea of Serentiy has the more detailed break down of the musicals by year, distributor, and theater/idol group.
I am the least knowledgeable about Sera Myu so I’ll have to leave that over to them. Little to no Sera Myu shows have been released with official subs.
-
There is also the ice show but that’s been delayed to next year because of the... troubles.
And there’s a bunch of other stuff too like the SNES game and drama CDs and stuff but I think that starts getting off topic.
I know this is a super long explanation to a simple question but I wanted to be thorough because although the 90s anime is generally the go-to, there are people who prefer other versions more.

RANKING HAISUTE (or the ones i’ve seen so far)
not that anyone has asked me, but i’ve literally been so hyperfixated on these shows for MONTHS and although i’ve gotten my bestie into them now, it’s not like i can bombard them with all these deep-ish dives into these things and how much and why i love them, so i thought HEY why not just put it out into the ether coz DAMN i really wanna talk about them.
under the cut for length (HELLA LENGTH) and spoilers.
let me preface this first by saying i havent seen ALL the shows yet. i havent ever watched the first run of Itadaki No Keshiki, and i havent seen any of the new Karasuno cast shows yet, as by the time i had gotten hooked on these shows, the time to watch Strongest Challengers and Battle At The Garbage Dump on DMM.com had passed, and with my limited budget (i havent been able to work properly since literally mid-July last year), it’ll be a while before i can afford their twin pack DVD when it comes out next month. ALTHOUGH i am hoping to be able to download Fly High on DMM.com before the availability runs out in the middle of March, if i’ll actually have enough money for that.
additionally, i rank these from my least favorite to most favorite, but that does not mean that i hate or dislike any of them. in fact, i have little to zero negative things to say about any of these shows. i just happen to love some more than the others, and i think you’ll be able to tell by how long i go on about each show. i’ll TRY to keep things concise but im telling you now, i’ve already tried this once until an accidental button press erased everything i had written, and this will not be short. at all.
i’ll start first with the things i love about Haisute in general:
quite obviously, the projections. before i finally saw Haisute this year, i had only ever seen BNHA, KNY and Kuroshitsuji musicals, and while they have awesome set pieces, i had never seen video projections utilized the way Haisute does, and i think it’s so wonderful and creative, and so technically sound on everyone’s part. like, it has to be so precise with cast performance and blocking and sound and lights...like. dudes. shout-out to the tech staff of Haisute, y’all are amazing.
the acting performances in general. i dont think there’s a bad actor at all in any of these. some stiff-ish performances (Noah Ishikura as Lev, but mostly in SoE, which was his first time acting ever, so understandable), maybe, but even those actors do great when they’re having a pivotal moment, scene or dialogue. it’s hard to pick faves but somehow i do have them, lol - Kenta Suga as Hinata (obviously), Kentaro as Daichi, Hiroki Ino as Suga, Kousuke Asuma as Oikawa, literally ALL THREE BOKUTOS, literally BOTH AKAASHIS, Ami Saito as Yachi, Tatsunari Kimura as Kageyama, and my top two faves, Shori Kondo and Takato Nagata as KuroKen. for obvious reasons (see: my numerous gifsets that i still have so much to add to alkdjf).
the music is WONDERFUL. the varieties across shows, teams and characters while still maintaining the main themes are just so good. it’s easier for them to be highlighted to since there isnt any singing, and so many moments are told through the music rather than the music accompanying the moment imo.
the choreography is gold af. im sad we lose HIDALI after Tokyo Battle, but im sure the rest of the shows still keep that amazing spark. but i juST. HIDALI’s choreography is iconic. i’ll talk abt it a bit more in some of the entries in the list.
OKAY, now on to the rankings.
7. View from the Top (2nd Run) so again, I DONT HATE ANY OF THESE SHOWS. the reason this is at the bottom of my list is mostly because of what it doesnt have through no fault of its own, rather than anything that it does. i personally love watching character growth and evolution, so for the most part, the first story in anything that has multiple follow-ups tend to be my least favorite part, and i come to enjoy them more as a “look how far we’ve come” thing. that being said, i do think this was such an awesome show to kick-off what has become an iconic 2.5D franchise. so much of it feels like the transition from potential to kinetic energy. a little show that could, and then did. i do think i enjoy this more with a nostalgic sort of fondness than i do with a “look how cool this thing is!” feeling, but again, that’s coz i enjoy watching things changing rather than at the start. what definitely stands out to me here is that i came to it this as only my fourth 2.5D franchise, and the ones i’d watched before this were so different in staging and execution, and that really had me hooked. also, this franchise honestly is one of the best casting in any show i’ve ever seen in my life, like wtf, i havent seen a badly cast actor at all, even for the side characters i dont really pay that much attention to otherwise. you cant help but be sucked into the bright light that is Kenta Suga, and Kousuke Asuma has to be the most Oikawa Oikawa to ever Oikawa anything Oikawa. Tatsunari, Ryotaro and Justin absolutely jumped right out of the manga and anime and onto the stage as Kags, Tsukki and Asahi. and GAWD do i love me some Kentaro and Hiroki as DaiSuga. i went in a big fan and simp of Hiroki Ino and Sugawara, so for the first couple of watches, i was heavily focused on Ino!Suga, but by the third rewatch, Ken-chan came around a corner and smacked me in the face with a 2x4 wrapped in barbed wire. when that man smiles, i just get murdered.
6. Start of the Giant i honestly had a hard time picking between this and InK for the bottom spot, not because i hate this (AGAIN, I DONT HATE ANY OF THESE SHOWS), but because of how this show feels to me. ultimately, i picked this one to win over InK because of how much character progression is shown between these two shows. stating the obvious, KAZUMA KAWAHARA. HOO BOY. and big, BIG shout-outs to Kouhei Shiota for portraying Tanaka’s emotional roller-coaster so excellently to stride alongside Ennoshita’s big journey and Kazuma’s powerhouse performance. i also wanna spotlight how much more comfortable Tatsuya Kageyama was in his second go-around as Kags, and how well Keita Tanaka and Naoki Tanaka came in as new(old)!Daichi and new!Suga. it took me a while to get to this show because i was so sad to lose Ken-chan and Hiroki after SoE, and i thought i just would not be able to love DaiSuga the same way. turns out that that’s a good thing, because they do play similar but different DaiSugas to Kentaro and Hiroki. it possibly also helped to know that KT wasn’t entirely new, and to have known of Naoki from BNHA (with Hiroki!), although i hadnt known it was him until i started the show up at last, lol. Kentaro got to play a captain who was warm and very much one of the boys, someone who was growing into the role of a captain of a team that had a very real chance of going farther than it had in a while, while KT got to play a Daichi who, fittingly, was more established as a pillar of the group (and im sure the storytelling of this show helped with that), more of that Dadchi that we know and love. Hiroki got to play a gentle but mischeivous Suga who was all about watching over and taking care of the team, watching and waiting for his turn while understanding that Kags was their best chance, while Naoki got to play a more active, more athletic Suga who was becoming more active the closer the team got to Nationals. their performances stood out not just coz they were new, but because of the theme of this story in particular, about captains and leading, so i thought it was quite a nice way to welcome them into the fold. i also of course enjoyed Johzenji and Wakunan, maybe Johzenji more than Wakunan. i saw someone say they’re a bit like Fukurodani and Nekoma lite, and i can totally see and agree with that. this show also feels a bit like Revival lite, in that it’s got a fun first half and then a more action-packed second match with an emotional gutpunch at the end. but ultimately, this is lower on my list because, through no major fault of its own, it felt like a filler show, considering what was coming after this. it felt a bit like “lets’ get on with this story so we can get on to the last hurrah that everyone is looking forward to.” of all the side teams to have been portrayed in the Engeki story, i feel like i remember johzenji and wakunan less. again, that’s not really anyone’s fault, it’s just where this show was positioned in the timeline and what it was ultimately representing. as a parting thought tho, i just wanna shout-out the new lighting scheme they did for this show, especially coming from SoE where there was a lot of darkness or back-lighting. this show is brighter lit in general than most of the shows that came before it, and idky exactly but i do appreciate that a lot.
5. Winners And Losers objectively, this is probably one of the top 3 shows in all of Haisute’s history. but it’s lower on my list because it is the most taxing to watch and rewatch, not because it’s too slow or anything like that, but because it really just is such a tiring story, and i think that’s deliberate on the part of the writers and directors. this was Karasuno’s first major loss, and it was against an opponent they thought they knew, so of course the lead-up had to be a big deal. it’s also a story that revolves quite a bit around kageyama reaching a turning point and learning a few lessons that would ultimately change him, so the story had to also execute that change happening not just in Kageyama but around him. add to that the fact that this was Tatsunari’s goodbye performance (as well as Shohei’s as Noya, but then he doesn’t really get a big emotional moment here) and it’s just heavy on the emotions all around. the comedic distraction of ShoriTaka as Tetsuko and Kenko was honestly quite welcome, lmao. quick little shout-out to Kousuke Asuma and Allen Kohatsu as IwaOi, since they got to really show off the different sides to both those characters in this, and they just are stellar in general. that bit at the end of one of their flashbacks where Iwa-chan tells Oikawa that he’s not the only one fighting, there’s six people in that team, and Oikawa breaks into laughter as Kousuke strips off the flashback jacket, and Iwa’s like “uuuhhh did i hit you too hard, or?” UGH, i love that bit, that almost creepy laugh from Kousuke and the way he comes out of it to say “suddenly im not so upset” is just SO good. im also so happy to see Hiroki get his due as Suga when he finally gets to step up to the plate - or net, as it were - and basically pinch-hit for Kags. he plays senpai!Suga so sweetly, like you really can’t help but love him coz he’s so caring. i also did not expect to be hit right in the feels with the switch back from him to Kageyama, but that bit where he says “it’s frustrating, but hinata’s expression when he’s hitting my sets is different from when it’s yours” really got me. and then when he had to leave the court, asahi and daichi send a fist bump his way, and he gives just this tiny fist bump wave that’s both tired and disappointed and sad, and it’s juST! it hurts me everytime. and before this gets long, im gonna just spotlight the last 10-15 minutes of the show, right after Karasuno loses. Kenta absolutely nails Hinata’s expression in the manga, that wide-eyed disbelief and shock. and then when Daichi tells him not to apologize because he didn’t miss, when Daichi just walks over and hugs him, good gawd. (sidebar, but i’m so glad i got to see that bit with both Ken-chan here and KT in Strongest Team.) and the way Hinata couldn’t move after thanking the audience, not even after Ukai called him back, so Daichi had to actually go get him? my heart was in PIECES. and then the fuggin dinner scene. LORD ABOVE. like, if you dont love Kenta Suga as Hinata, this is the scene that should convince you you’re wrong.
4. The Strongest Team this is right smack dab in the middle of the list because it’s probably the best staged show of all the seven that i’ve seen, but it also hurts me so much for all the obvious reasons. this is the one i’ve rewatched the least, and everytime i rewatch it, i cry as if it’s the first time im watching it. the whole show absolutely feels like a tribute to the Karasuno cast and all the growth they’ve had and contributed to Haisute over their three years with the show, and the entire thing feels so fond, if that makes any sense. everyone on the team gets a big emotional moment, and it’s so sweet to see them each paid tribute. aside from them, i gotta AGAIN shout-out kousuke as oikawa. i like aoba josai enough, i like oikawa enough as a character, but that moment when kousuke absolutely broke down in the locker room after losing to karasuno broke my heart, even more so knowing that he absolutely felt all that gratitude because he wasnt sure he’d be able to come back to the show coz of his hip injury. i think one little moment that doesnt get as talked about as it should is just after he and Iwaizumi have that short convo of always being each other’s partners even after they’ve moved on to different schools. they do their fist bump, and then Iwa walks away, but Kousuke/Oikawa is still absolutely in tears, and as Iwa walks off, he just kind of reaches out and lets out a pained “Iwa-chan!” that’s just barely audible, and that jUST. GETS ME EVERYTIME. hell, im feeling a little heartstring pull right now just thinking about it. i also wanna shout-out Shiratorizawa because Engeki made me actually care about them. like, okay - i dont hate Shiratorizawa, at all. but watching the anime, despite having an entire season be around them, i just never really latched onto them. i like Ushiwaka enough, and i just...dont like Tendou (sue me). but Engeki Haikyuu has a habit of spotlighting other teams and characters enough to make you actually think about them and care about them, and Shiratorizawa was the biggest example of that for me. their theme is awesome, it’s this big, deep, heavy thing that feels as big and broad as the players look. and i could feel their almost militaristic teamwork when the coach is on them, and it’s so good. speaking of Coach Washijo, shout-out to that flashback scene to his younger days. Kenta looked absolutely risible in the wig and giant eyebrows, but i think it was an important touch to have the person playing Hinata be the person playing younger Washijo, because their inner conflicts are basically the same, and Washijo comes to appreciate Hinata’s efforts because of it, so i thought that was a nice touch. (still dont like Tendou tho, sue me.) i gotta end this entry coz it’s getting long, so im just gonna quickly list my favorite scenes/moments:
Yamaguchi’s pinch serve, and bringing out the spear. Kairi Miura wields that spear like he’s been doing it all his life.
Tsukki’s big “GODDAMMIT I THINK I LOVE VOLLEYBALL NOW” moment. the expression on ryotaro’s face right at the end of that scene, where he’s basically saying “it’s just a club, AND YET!” uuuggggghhhh, please i love it. also, shout-out to when Hinata pointed at him and just said “...nice.” like...that always feels like only half Hinata and Tsukki, and more half-Kenta and his best friend Ryotaro, just like the “Tsukki! that one was worth a 100 points!” line that absolutely gets Ryotaro so that on the live cam he had to turn his head away before he meant to for the next bit.
that moment in the last-ish set of the match where everyone is just DESPERATE to win, so it becomes this frantic rally and volley where everyone just starts to grunt and yell louder and louder, and people are running back and forth and jumping and diving, and it’s just this cacophony of sound and blur of movement that just seems to stretch on and on, until finally Shiratorizawa just yells “SHUT UP! WE’RE STRONGER!” and knocks all of Karasuno down. WHEW. that bit is just. WHEW. i almost always forget to breathe at that point. and then the waterworks get turned on as Ukai tearfully tells them to get back up, because volleyball is a sport where you HAVE to look up. LORDDDDD.
the bit towards the end of the match, after tsukki returns from his injury, where they absolutely acted out Ushiwaka pushing Hinata and Tsukki to the floor and holding their heads down. when i first watched it, i gasped because that is straight out of the anime and manga, and then when the rest of Karasuno came in to pull Ushi off, i just turned into a giant sobbing mess.
the graduation curtain call, obviously, but in particular, the bit that will ALWAYS, WITHOUT FAIL, destroy me is when Kenta says “this show was so tiring and tough sometimes, but when i look back, all i can remember are the good times, the best times.” GODDAMMIT IM TEARING UP BADLY RN JUST THINKING ABOUT THAT BIT.
3. Summer Of Evolution this is where the lines between the rankings get a little bit blurred, because i love these top three equally for the most part, but i had to choose a number two (i absolutely know what my number one is), and when i really think about it, SoE just gets edged out by my number two, but barely. i think what i love the most about this show is that this, more than any of the other shows, really portrays these characters as high school kids. and that’s not just because part of the story is set in the school and it’s actually showing the school sometimes, but coz they’re going through and portraying teenage experiences and emotions. most of the other shows portray the team in matches, so we’re seeing them more as volleyball players than teenagers or students, but we get to finally see that here, and it’s really refreshing. other than that, im gonna try to just list some of my highlights and favorites again coz i dont wanna keep going too long:
im so glad to finally have girls on the show, and not just in a “YAY FEMINISM! GIRL POWER! WHOO!” kind of way. kiyoko has always felt like an inextricable part of the team for me, so it was bittersweet to have such a great Karasuno cast but without a Kiyoko, so i was REALLY happy to finally get her here! and for a first time actor ever, Shizune was so awesome! she absolutely has that gentle strength that Kiyoko has, and the way she’s been written in absolutely does feel like she’s always been there. i do wish she got more to do with the third year boys, but all in all, it’s SO good to have an actual Kiyoko who absolutely looks like she came out of the manga.
im also just so DAMN happy about Yachi and her portrayal here. i think ami saito is so dang perfect, and yachi is such a fun addition that fits right in with the chaotic fun of Karasuno. one thing that i REALLY love, though, is how she gets to just act. before Haisute, my only experience of female characters and actors on a 2.5D stage is with Uraraka (and two or three other female students) in BNHA and Elizabeth in Kuroshitsuji, and those characters are your typical cutesy girls, and their movements and body language are so typically girly, you know what i mean, those softer arms and smaller movements, looser fingers, these little “Kyaa~” things, those things. but Kiyoko, Yachi and Saeko arent like that, so that’s not how they’re portrayed here. Ami as Yachi is just as loud and expressive and active as the Karasuno boys, bar actually playing in a match. also, her chemistry with Kenta is SO GOOD. i dont really ship YachiHina, i think they’re cute friends, but BOY DID THESE TWO MAKE ME RETHINK THAT. ami’s Yachi with Kenta’s Hinata made me think “YOU KNOW WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THESE TWO GO ON A CHAPERONED DATE.” they’re adorable. a particular fave of mine is when hinata climbs a tree to help a baby bird back into its nest and he asks Yachi if she wants to climb up too, and also after Yachi finishes making the Hinata poster, she jumps onto the back of Hinata’s bike and they ride off-stage together. PLEASE IT’S SO CUTE.
also: SAEKO NEE-SAN PLEASE STEP ON ME.
OH HI FUKURODANI. they are such good chaos boys, i love them. i dont have much to say about them here just yet, but WOW im so glad to have them onstage at last.
NEKOMA IS BACK THANK GAWD I LOVE NEKOMA. of all the teams portrayed, i think nekoma is the one that feels the most connected together (AHA!). like, even when they have a new character and/or cast member, the new ones never really stand out as new, they feel like they’ve always been there. this play really showcases the teams at their most casual so we dont get to see as much of their excellent teamwork and connection as we do in past and future shows, but you really get a sense of their family dynamic and just GOD I LOVE THEM SO MUCH, and honestly dont get me started on ShoriTaka, i will literally never stop
shout-out to Tatsuya Kageyama, he had big shoes to fill not just in terms of character but also as an actor, since this is his first show ever. much like with KT and Naoki as DaiSuga, it does feel like he plays a similar enough Kageyama without just mimicing Tacchu. this is also the right Kags arc to introduce a new Kageyama actor with as well, since there’s a big change after that loss to Aoba Josai and Oikawa, so i think the writing of the show also absolutely helped Kage-chan ease into his role, and helped the audience ease into this new Kageyama. overall, i think he did an awesome job, and we’re really fortunate to have had two awesome Kageyamas before gen 1/1.5 changed to gen 2.
i also just noticed/realized that the backstage video for SoE starts with the introduction of Kage-chan and Fucchi as new cast members, and ends with the farewell to Ken-chan and Hiroki as graduating members, and i know that’s just natural coz the first time the Karasuno cast met the two new members was at the photoshoot for visuals, but also what a nice little circle of life there.
COMING INTO THE HOMESTRETCH NOW, if you’ve made it this far, thank you SO MUCH, im sorry, i really just have a tendency to ramble, and like i said, i dont really have anyone or an opportunity to talk this deep about these shows to, so thanks so much for your time.
2. Karasuno, Revival! WHEW okay, so idk if this is Unpopular Opinion or controversial coz objectively it is the best show so far, and i’ve put it only at number 2. BUT LISTEN: before i saw Tokyo Battle, this was absolutely my number 1 favorite. the Dateko match is so good and so fun to watch, and honestly, that rap battle gives me so much life im almost immortal now. i LOVE that they also got to show ikejiri (THANK YOU KENTA SUGA) and ken-chan as daichi got his moments because of it, and it gave us “katou tou shinakya, katenai!” as an iconic quote and theme for the show, we got a fantastic moment for Asahi that was paid off from the previous show, also honestly “otchita kyougo, tobenai garasu” is just gonna be stuck in your head forever for a while. we also got Kousuke and Allen’s excellent IwaOi back, bringing with them their “Iwa-chan, are you my mom” dynamic (and gawd the cackle i let out when Iwa yeets a volleyball at Oikawa, or that turn and yell that makes Oikawa yelp as he exits off stage lkasdjf), which is always a plus. but! BUT!! best thING FOR ME???? NEKOMA, BABY!! like im sorry, im biased, but i fuggin LOVE nekoma, kuroo is my favorite character in the entire series, and Haisute really gave them a fantastic story and dynamic, because again, there’s so much you can do on stage that you sometimes cant do in anime or manga, so they were really able to highlight Nekoma’s famous teamwork, especially when centered around Kenma. more on that later, but like. it was just such a JOY to watch Karasuno, still kind of scattered puzzle pieces at this point trying to figure out how to best go together to create one big picture, go up against the smooth teamwork of Nekoma, and learn and grow from it. also they honestly have the best team theme music and team dance, fite me. also thank you Haisute for making KuroDai so painfully real lakdsfj
1. Tokyo Battle okay okaY OKAY OKAY OKAY. i think there are some people who actually like this the least coz it’s just too different from the rest of the shows that came before it - no Karasuno, less projections, different music style, aesthetically different stage, etc. B U T. aside from me just being biased because Nekoma are my favorite team, i actually think many of those differences are what makes this show my favorite one. first of all, the music is LIT AF. the themes for each team are so distinct, they really help play up the animal motifs that are played up the most in this show than in any of the others. secondly, THAT CHOREOGRAPHY THO. good gawd. HIDALI said “it’s our last Haisute, let’s go out with a bang” and they really fuggin did. Fukurodani absolutely is TOKYO PARTY TIME, they got to really play up their party birds schtick and i love it. Nohebi i cannot HELP but love because i love snakes, but also, with Nohebi’s cast, you can tell the choreographers were so happy to finally have an actual technical dancer. they had yuu fukuzawa doing the most and then some in playing up the snake theme, and it’s literally so hypnotic to watch his pops, locks and isolations. he’s also just such an AWESOME daisho, and it helps that nohebi are written to be cunning and sneaky. i also love that he and Kuroo seem to actually have a lot of untold history, and i kind of wish we could get a bit more elaboration on that, coz Yuu’s and Shori’s chemistry as frenemy team captains is SO GOOD. and then of course. NEKOMA, BABY!! so okay. kenma absolutely should be the lead of this show, and he is, BUT he’s also, to a certain extent, inextricable from Kuroo and the rest of the team, so that you dont always get that feeling of Kenma being in the spotlight the same way Hinata is (for understandable reasons since Nekoma arent even really the main characters of the story as a whole), and i think that’s important because, again, Nekoma is all about that teamwork and connection. like, Kenma is the lead because he thinks for Nekoma, and Nekoma acts accordingly, instead of how it is usually where the story is showing Hinata’s perspective alone. it also feels like that in terms of the actors. like, technically Takato is zachou, and he is, but also several times in the curtain call speeches, the cast members refer to or mention both Takato and Shori together. even Takato says that when he had spoken to Kenta about how nervous he was about taking up the zachou mantle from him, Kenta had said “if it’s you and shori, you’ll be fine.” they are a unit, and it really comes across in their portrayals of Kuroo and Kenma as well, and even if you love nothing else about this show, you literally cannot help but love that about them. i think the show does a great job revolving the Nekoma team dynamic around that too without making it the ONLY thing that keeps Nekoma together. the star of the show is absolutely the theme of “connection” (more than the other theme of promises), and if you’ve seen the show and you dont cry at the “Tsunage” section as Nekoma wins the match against Nohebi, then are you really watching the show lmao.
OKAY OKAY I’VE REALLY RAMBLED ON, and if you made it all the way here, THANK YOU AND IM SORRY. but also, there’s still a lot of things i wanna talk about that i didnt talk about here coz im mostly a scatterbrain and live half my life radiating BDE - Bokuto Dumbass Energy. so if you’re also ridiculously obsessed with these shows and wanna talk about it, my inbox is open. someone come hyperfixate with me while i make SO MANY MORE GIFSETS OHMYGOD ALL THE GIFSETS geezas crust when i get to Tokyo Battle i will be insufferable.

Friday the 13th fan survey
saw this from @insanityincarnated (I added my own little question at the end)
1. First F13 film you ever saw? Jason Lives when I was 11, but I had been a fan without actually seeing the movies since I was 7 when my grandmother (who is a huge horror fan, go figure) told me stories about Jason when I asked about her poster she had put up for Halloween; it was literally like the campfire scenes in the movies (except in a kitchen) and I wouldn’t want any other way to have been introduced
2. Last F13 film you saw? I'm not sure if this means in theaters or just last one you watched recently, but either way the answer is part 4 lmao
3. How many F13 movies do you own? All of'm on DVD, getting the new bluray boxset soon.
4. Favorite film in the series? Jason Lives, which isn't a unique answer, so I'll give a special shoutout to Freddy vs Jason which is probably my ~3rd favorite.
5. Why? Jason Lives: Need I give an explanation? The movie is incredibly fun, clever, and it overall feels like a celebration of the character after fans missed him in part 5. It's a loveletter to the franchise. Plus, I love zombie Jason.
Freddy vs Jason: Everything the fanboy in me could ever have wanted, my two favorite boys sharing the same screen. The fight is just incredible, and the story is really fun. The fact that we got this movie at all is surreal. This film gets way too much unnecessary shit, but I guess fans are impossible to please.
6. Least favorite film? Jason Goes to Hell
7. Why? It sucks
8. Favorite actor to play Jason? Kane Hodder, the guy owned the role. I've seen people say he makes Jason TOO angry which... doesn't make sense to me lmao, Jason IS one angry motherfucker, and Kane captured that perfectly.
9. Least favorite to play Jason? I don't want to say any of them are my "least" favorite, because they all did great, and they all seem like really sweet people. I will say I have some issues with how stiff Ken Kirzinger was at times in Freddy vs Jason, but I mostly attribute that to Ronny Yu's poor directing, who told him to act like Frankenstein.
10. Favorite story line? F13 isn't exactly known for unique storylines, lmao, but there are standouts. It's a toss between Jason Lives or FvJ, again. Jason Lives has a very basic premise, but it absolutely nails the Friday the 13th formula like no other movie had or has been able to since.
Freddy vs Jason simply doesn't get enough credit for how well it blends both franchises. When you read the OTHER scripts they had considered for the crossover, you really appreciate Shannon & Swift's screenplay that much more.
11. Best kill? It's really hard for me to choose, so I’ll just list off a few of my favorites: heart punch in part 6, head crush in part 3, cooked alive in the remake, face smash in jason x, sleeping bag kill (duh)... i could really go on all day LOL
12. Worst kill? I don't think there's any particularly "bad" kills. Probably one of the offscreen deaths (but even those can be kind of dramtic & cool, especially the ones that play with shadows). I guess when non-Jason-morgue-guy slashes up a girl with a razor. Barely see shit and it’s not even Jason
13. When people say “ch-ch-ch-ah-ah-ah”, you…… This is where all the gamers in the audience would yell "AKSHUALLY IT'S KI KI KI MA MA MA" but honestly I just don't give a fuck, I'd just be glad I'm talking to someone who knows the movies lol
Bonus: Unpopular opinion you have?
The only bad movie is Jason Goes to Hell, all the other ones are enjoyable and I think often get too much hate (notably Jason Takes Manhattan and FvJ), and I don’t think the series should retcon any of the movies so that fans can make their own personal timeline since none have any baggage that would effect the series going foreward. Also zombie jason > human jason (but I love both)
#I'd like to do more of these for other franchises#and I'd love to read yalls too#Friday the 13th#Jason Voorhees#Pamela Voorhees#slashers#horror movies#slasher community#80s horror#kane hodder#sean cunningham#freddy vs jason#ken kirzinger#jason goes to hell#jason x

Capture the Wind (3/5)
Chapter 3: Kriegspiel
At her next visit, the Seer doesn’t mention posters or Sylphs. You don’t bring it up. Why bother? She must already know. She has to know. She knows when you think about it. You’re thinking about it. Stop thinking about it!
“John,” she says, snapping you out of your distraction and back to your lesson. "Look at the board."
You sigh and roll your eyes. "What, am I in checkmate again?” you drawl sarcastically. And then, you stop, mouth open. Because you're not in checkmate.
She's in checkmate.
You don't understand. How is this possible? You hadn't even been thinking about it. “No way,” you say.
The Seer is all grins and teeth. “Yes, way. It's not that hard, is it, to beat a blind woman at chess?"
"But, you're not..."
There is no fanfare. She simply resets the board, into a new setup. “Again.”
This time, you lose again, as you try to somehow do what you did before without fully remembering what it was that you did. As she wins, she flicks the white king off the board like she would one of her ever-present coins. Rude. You sigh, and get ready to reset the board.
“John. It’s your move.”
You blink at her. “You took my king.”
She smiles. “The white king. When the white king dies, the game doesn’t end. It begins.”
And she takes a set of blue pieces out of that nowhere space where she keeps everything. They don’t look like any chess pieces you’ve ever seen, and she sets them up in an unfamiliar configuration.
“John. Move.”
Your new pieces move strangely. They teleport, they revive, they control the opponent’s pieces. You are not even sure you’re controlling them completely. “What is this?”
The Seer just keeps grinning. “Nyrblish 5th dimensional psion-chess. Much more fun than the human version.”
The board changes. It becomes three dimensional, spins into odd shapes, tesseracts, and you can’t quite make sense of what’s happening. “I don’t think I can play this.”
“Try.”
You try, but the board looks like something Escher would sketch in his spare time. Your head hurts, looking at it. “I can’t.”
“Do it anyway.”
“Look, Lady Justice, maybe you can do this kind of thing, but I’m only- I’m a kid! I’m a human, I can’t play chess in five dimensions!”
“Are you sure, John Egbert?”
“Yes, I’m sure I can’t-”
“Are you sure that you’re human?”
You stop at that. Your mouth goes dry.
“Well… well yeah, I-”
“You might want to think, John, about what is holding you back.” And the Seer packs up her chess, all five dimensions of it. And she leaves.
-----------------------------
Your dad ruins everything.
Why did he have to clean your room? Make your bed? You can do that yourself, you’re fourteen for godssakes!
When you return home from coding summer camp, your poster, your poster signed by the goddess of Space, is lying on the kitchen counter, open for the whole world to see. There is a post-it note attached.
Son,
When I get home, we will Talk.
Shit shit SHIT. He found the poster. He found the poster
You are so dead. Should you destroy the evidence? No, it’s too late for that.
Maybe you should run away. No, that’s stupid, where would you go? Anna’s? The Church? That idea is stupid, so stupid, squawking-like-an-imbecile-and-shitting-on-your-desk-level stupid, and you are not going to do that.
You pace back and forth, trying to think what you are going to say. You don’t know what to do or who to confide in.
Anna can’t help you. The Seer probably won’t, since even though YOU didn’t write the name or ever speak it aloud, you’re pretty sure keeping the autograph of another god in the house breaks her rules.
But… she never got mad about it. And she must have known, right?
You decide to risk it. You sit on the floor in a meditative position, take a deep breath, and say aloud: “…Hey, Seer of Mind? I know I don’t usually ask you for anything, but… my dad found a poster with the name of the S- the Godmother on it. Do you have any advice?”
You wait for a while. Nothing. The house is empty and silent.
Then, your computer, from upstairs, makes the faint beep can only mean you’re being IM’d.
Anna?
You go upstairs and look at the screen. The chum-handle is unfamiliar.
-- gallowsCalibrator [GC] began pestering ghostlyTrickster [GT]at 17:43 --
GC: JOHN, YOU H4V3 TO T4K3 R3SPONS1B1L1TY FOR YOUR OWN 4CT1ONS.
GC: TRY TO T4K3 TH1S 4S 4NOTH3R L3SSON.
GC: JUST L1K3 4LL TH3 OTH3RS.
GT: wait
GT: are you the seer?
GT: you use pesterchum?
GT: weird
GC: 1 US3 WH4T3V3R 1 N33D TO US3

GC: YOUR F4TH3R 1S HOM3.
GC: DO YOU HAV3 WH4T IT T4K3S TO F4C3 H1M?
You can’t believe this. You can hear your dad’s car pull into the driveway.
This is what, another test for you to fail? Another opportunity to get beaten up? Did she ignore the poster just so that your dad would find it later?
Another lesson, just like all the others. Sure, another lesson in pain and bullshit.
You are sick of this. You are so, so sick of this.
You hear the door downstairs open, then close. You don’t want to do this, so you delay the inevitable by straightening your bookshelf and re-sorting your DVD collection.
It’s six-thirty by the time you head downstairs, every step feeling like you’re ascending a gallows.
Gods, you really don’t want to do this.
Your dad is sitting at the table, next to the incriminating poster, reading a newspaper and smoking his pipe. You know it has to be bad, when he’s smoking.
“Son,” he says, not looking up from the paper. “Have a seat.”
You sit, and he slowly, methodically folds up the newspaper, still puffing on the pipe. The sitting and waiting is like torture. Like that Chinese torture thing where they drip water on your head. You stare fixedly at your knees.
“Son,” he says again. “I know it can be hard, to be different from the other kids. And it can feel like no one understands.”
That was not what you expected your dad to say. You expected him to berate you about the poster.
“I know that there are some kids who will pick out anything that makes a person different from the crowd,” your dad continues. “And atheism makes you very different.” He sighs. “I wish you had come to me about this.”
You realize that your dad is giving you a very convenient excuse.
Your dad leans forward, resting his forearms on the table. “I do not want you to be pressured into being something that you're not.”
You decide to take the proffered ‘out.’
“Oh,” you grunt. “Okay. Sure.”
Your dad taps the poster with his index finger. “Son,” he says, but you interrupt him.
“I didn’t ask for the poster, Dad! It was a gift. I didn’t ask for it.”
Your dad smiles thinly. “At least now I’m getting more out of you than monosyllables.”
You lapse back into a sullen silence.
“It’s not the poster, John. It’s the letter that was with it.”
You blanch. Shit. You didn’t even think of that.
“It seems to be implying that you’ve gone to church, and that you are grounded. Which is not, currently, the case.”
You try to breathe deeply. Calm your thoughts, and lie through your buck teeth.
“I didn't go to church, but she wanted me to go to church... I mean, I might have gone once or something, but I had to make an excuse not to. I had to not go, so I said I was grounded.” You try to look your dad in the eye as you speak.
“Son, you just gave me two different stories about church in as many seconds.”
Wow, you’re just digging this hole deeper for yourself, aren’t you?
Your dad shrugs. “She sounds like a good friend. If she really is, then she will understand that you simply don't worship any gods, and it won't matter.” There is a pause, during which time you say nothing. “You should tell her the truth. If she cares, then I don't think that she is really such a good friend.”
You try to think of a good excuse, before you respond. “She is a good friend, Dad. I did not ask for the poster. She... she went to this event and I guess she thought it would be a nice thing to do, that's all.”
“Be that as it may. I think that you should tell her, but that is your decision to make.” Your dad takes a long drag on his pipe. “But there is something else we need to talk about. They did not stop beating you up, did they? The bullies from school?”
“No,” you mumble. “School was fine.”
“Your old man isn't blind, Son. I know what a bruise looks like.”
You sink into your chair. “I can handle it.”
Your dad fixes you with a very Stern Fatherly Look, and you sink down even lower, trying to disappear.
“How many months has it been? I should have spoken to you sooner.” He reaches across the table to put a Solid Patriarchal Hand on your shoulder. “Son, it is okay to admit that you need help. Real men know when the situation is too big to handle. It is not a sign of weakness. Do you understand me?”
Your dad still has no clue. But you don’t want him to think that you’re being beaten up, when you’re not, not really. You suddenly have an idea.
“It’s not like that,” you say, shaking your head. “It’s not bullying. It’s like, you know Fight Club? It's kind of like that. Only without the anti-government conspiracy and the multiple personality stuff. And I don't have a Brad Pitt. I'm just learning how to defend myself and stuff. I am getting tougher! It's not too big to handle. I am fine. I don't need help.”
Your dad gives you a Stern Fatherly Look, and you realize that he doesn’t buy it.
“Son, we are not leaving this table until you tell me the truth. I have already left this alone for too long.”
The truth? Well… what if you tell a partial truth? "Okay so there's this... girl. And she is really religious, and she thinks that she will help me find the gods if she teaches me how to fight and stuff. Martial arts."
Your dad sighs. “Do not tell me that my son thinks that he has to be beaten up to catch a girl's eye.”
What? Does he think you feel that way about the Seer? “No,” you state emphatically. “I don’t like, like her! And I do not think she likes me, either. At all, really.”
Your dad raises an eyebrow. “Well, at least I understand why you went to church, now.” Your dad sighs. “I don’t even want to know which gods this girl favors. If my son likes a girl that beats him up and calls it devotion, then... well, I may have to live with it. But you, Son, should not have to pretend that you are something that you’re not.”
“What? No, I’m not talking about Anna! Two different people.” This whole conversation is a mess. “And anyway, I don’t like them! I mean, I like Anna, but as a friend!”
“I see,” says your dad. “There is this one girl that you like enough to go to church for, and then there is this other, completely different, girl who you are willing to get beaten up by.”
“Yes, that is what is happening!” You are getting angry, now.
Your dad sighs and closes his eyes. “I am unsure whether to be proud or annoyed that my son is such a poor liar.” He leans forward, and takes another puff on his pipe. “You need to come clean with this girl, whether there is one of her or two. You are an atheist. If they really care about you then they will accept that.”
You count back the weeks. It’s been exactly four months and one week and two days since you first spoke to the Seer. Is your dad going to find out? You don’t want him to find out. You want deeply to prove that the Seer can be wrong, that you’re not as pathetically bad at keeping secrets as she thinks.
But it's been exactly 4 months, one week, two days. And, you realize that you have a choice. The Seer could be right… but it’s in your control.
You could say, “Yes, okay Dad.” And that would be that, for now. But it would just delay the inevitable: your dad would find out about the Seer tomorrow.
Or… you could make sure the Seer was wrong, for once.
You squeeze your eyes shut tight, and say, very quietly, “I’m not.”
Your dad pauses mid-puff. “Excuse me?”
You have to be brave. You have to do this. You twist your fingers into the fabric of your shirt, and say more clearly; “I’m not an atheist.”
Your dad takes his pipe out of his mouth, and lays it on the table. He looks grave. “You do not know what the gods are like, John. I am trying to protect you. Religion is dangerous, and you should stay away from it. I do not want to see you get hurt.”
This isn’t making any sense. “But Dad, it's not like pretending that the gods are not important makes them not exist. If they're dangerous, shouldn't we pay them respect? I mean, not make them mad, but just... you know, be normal about it? I mean, a lot of people are religious, Dad! Like, everyone! The only atheist I know is you!”
Very suddenly, your dad slams his fist into the table, making you jump. “We are not like other people!” Then, he abruptly slumps, and seems to try and compose himself. “I am sorry. I am not angry with you, John. I am scared.”
That takes you by surprise. You did not expect him to say that. “Dad? What are you talking about?”
Your dad looks haunted. “John, when you were an infant…” He swallows. “When you were an infant, I received a visit from the Flaming-Eyed God.”
And your dad tells you. About the warning, the threat, the gods made on your life. About how they told him not to pray, just like the Seer told you.
“John, the Mage told me that the other gods would do anything to keep you from doing… whatever it was they did not want to see happen. Do you understand what ‘anything’ means?”
You don’t want to hear this. “Yeah, but... I mean, what if some of the gods are protecting me from the others? Like the Flaming-Eyed God, and the Calibrator of the Gallows? I mean, I... I didn't know about any of this. But if I have this destiny or whatever, shouldn't I do what I can to like, fulfill it?”
“John.” Your dad sounds incredulous. “We are talking about the living gods. If they wanted to kill you, you would be dead before you could blink.”
You roll your eyes, but he continues. “The gods don’t mind atheists. We don’t draw their attention. They only hear you when—John, if you have been praying…”
You don’t say anything, but you know your guilt is written all over your face. You stare at the table, but can feel your dad’s eyes boring into you.
“John,” he says. “What have you said while you were praying?” You look up at your dad. He looks pained, like someone just stomped on his foot.
“Not much,” you say. “I usually couldn’t think of anything to pray about, really…”
He sighs. “Thank goodness.”
“But Dad…” Too late to go back now. “You’re wrong, kind of. About gods and atheists.”
“What do you mean?”
You interlock your fingers and look back at the table. “The gods do pay attention to atheists.”
You see your dad’s eyes widen. “John, have they spoken to you?”
Your stupid dad. You don’t look at him. “Yeah.” And then, because that doesn’t feel like enough: “I’m sorry. She told me not to tell you.”
“She…” Your dad’s voice is hollow, his expression fearful. You hate it. You hate seeing your dad looking so frightened.
“Lady Justice,” you clarify. “She said she’d be training me for some kind of destiny, or something.”
Your dad closes his eyes, and rests his forehead in one of his hands. When he speaks, his voice is breaking. You hate the sound of it. “I am sorry, John. I am so sorry. I should have told you sooner.”
Several long moments pass in silence. This is so uncomfortable. That the Seer’s prophecy is off by one day is a cold comfort. “Dad…”
Then, your dad looks up, and gets to his feet. There is something steely in his expression, something that wasn’t there before. “Son. Pack your things. We’re leaving.”
“What?”
“No questions, John.” His tone books no room for disobedience. “Do it.”
You don’t want to do this; this is crazy! But you've never seen your dad talk like that before. It’s kind of scary.
So, you get up, and pack your things. You don’t know how much to pack, but you figure a few days’ worth of clothes is probably fine. By the time you finish and come back downstairs, your dad has already packed his own possessions into the car.
“How long will we be gone for?” you ask.
“I don’t know,” he answers, and you worry a little that you didn’t pack enough.
Before you both drive off, you check the pesterlogs on your desktop. You don’t have any new ones from the Seer, but you do leave one for Anna:
GT: i’m leaving town for a few days
GT: so i will be afk
GT: but i will be online again soon.
GT: i have a lot to tell you.
And who knows? Now that the proverbial cat is out of its bag, maybe you can even tell her the truth.

Scooby-Doo
This year my brother and I made the ill-advised decision to rewatch every single Scooby-Doo direct-to-vhs/dvd movie we did when we were kids, and the results were surprising enough that I thought I’d share them with all of you.
This will be a two-part post, because there were nine of them. Before we begin:
I graded these on a curve, i.e, how I would rate them out of the other Scooby films in the group rather than an overall score. The original four will be on a scale of 1-4 stars, the following five will be on a scale of 1-5
I don’t know how much value these ratings will have for people who don’t have any nostalgia for Scooby-Doo. Hopefully none
We did NOT watch Reluctant Werewolf or Ghoul School, not because we didn’t enjoy them as kids but because I simply didn’t want to look at Scrappy for an hour, as is my right
Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island (1998)
★★★★
Zombie Island is not only the best Scooby-Doo movie ever made but is one of the best movies ever made. I know people like to hype it up, and as we sat down to watch I found myself doubting it deserved that level of praise considering, well, the everything about it. All doubts instantly vanished; the plot is rock-solid for a TV movie (the gang has been apart for some time and is reuniting to find a real ghost; return to status quo but with higher stakes), the animation is gorgeous, the soundtrack owns, and it’s genuinely frightening!
I won’t focus on my early memories of these movies since the point is to explain how well they hold up in 2020, but every kid I ever talked to on the school bus admitted how much Zombie Island freaked them out. Whether it was the zombies, the murderous pirates, the ghosts, or the surprise villains and their disgusting demise (the best twist!) it’s an intense story for children and makes for a perfect first horror movie. You also have the benefit of already caring about the main cast, and with surprisingly good writing/production on that end it leaves more room for developing the setting and supporting characters. Even characters that don’t talk have some of the best personalities in the whole franchise, and really sell you on the mixture of cartoon goofiness and supernatural threat.
Scooy-Doo! and the Witch’s Ghost (1999)
★☆☆☆
People have almost as much nostalgia for this one as they do Zombie Island and remember it being good because it’s the one with The Hex Girls, but we were WRONG. Witch’s Ghost somehow manages to do the opposite of everything its predecessor did right; the characters are weak and the writing and pacing are some of the worst in the series. Jokes land flat, action sequences leave you wondering where anything is in relation to each other, and the plot honestly could’ve been leant to a different movie. This one feels the least Mystery-Inc-focused of the franchise.
I will give it the benefit of having interesting ideas on paper; one of those story pitches that needed more editing than it got. Maybe they were too focused on the songs or creating an appropriately hammy but truly messed-up ending for Tim Curry (the movie’s two best features), but it leaves you wanting more. Or just wanting something else.
Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders (2000)
★★★☆
I’ve seen this cited as the weakest movie in the lineup because it’s seemingly disinterested in the mystery and spends almost its entire runtime giving Scooby and Shaggy love interests, so I hoped my memory of the characters being good would be enough to outweigh all that. They went above and beyond.
The setup is actually one of the more grounded ones we get from these movies (car breaks down in the desert and the gang has to spend a few days in a small town), and yeah the mystery isn’t the most compelling but maybe for once it isn’t about the mystery you know? Maybe it’s about the worst imaginary love song you’ve ever heard performed at a diner right after being kidnapped off a crazy old artist’s roof. It’s all charming and completely bizarre, right up to the twist ending. There are threats of physical harm which gives it some credit on the ‘scary’ front, and on the comedy front everyone is hilarious? Especially Fred? It’s for literally no reason and we never see quite that kind of characterization from him or any of the others again. The real mystery was the friends we made along the way.
Scooby-Doo and the Cyber Chase (2001)
★★☆☆
Cyber Chase has the opposite problem of Alien Invaders; sounds amazing on paper but doesn’t quite come together in the end. The mystery has a perfect amount of clues sprinkled in for a kid to be able to work out whodunnit, but the cast of characters is so small and boring anyone can do the same just by process of elimination. The pacing is set up so that the gang is fighting through ten levels of a video game, but we spend more than half the movie on just level 10 with the rest left to montage.
Great individual elements and plot, really bad pacing and characters (though my brother points out an evil computer virus is one of the better creature designs we’ve seen and I have to agree with them- sad trombone sound effect.) The good thing about this movie is that it features a heinous cover of the Scooby-Doo theme song by the B-52s that it does feel like a weirdly sweet and appropriate sendoff to the original series; with the early 2000s gang meeting their 60s-teenage-sleuth counterparts in VR, facing old foes, and saying goodbye and moving on. Fortunately or unfortunately, Warner Brothers was only just getting started.

Ephemera Week (2002)
It’s still ephemera week, and we’re still talking about John K. I said most of my piece on him in the last post, so don’t expect there to go full bore on this one, except I forgot to say he’s animation’s Jerry Lewis. His current stuff is basically Hardly Working. I will not elaborate, because I’m being mean to you0.
MARCH SPECIALS!
In March, Adult Swim advertised a run of one-off specials. A couple of them were already covered because they fell under the parameters of “Adult Swim original production”. They were Welcome to Eltingville (March 3rd) and Saddle Rash (March 24th).
Day in the Life of Ranger Smith | March 10th 2002 - 11:00 PM (Originally aired on Cartoon Network in 1999)
This was one of two specials commissioned by Cartoon Network re-imagining Yogi Bear. The artist what took this assignment was John K, who I REEEAALLY skewered in last night’s post, didn’t I?
This is about Ranger Smith harassing animals and writing them up for violating park rules, basically. It’s short! I remember liking it at the time! Okay, maybe I’m going crazy here, but I distinctly remembered a part at the end where Ranger Smith is in bed and he solemnly confides in the viewer that the noises of wilderness give him nightmares and then it just ends. Did I imagine this? It does end with him in bed, but this doesn’t happen in the version on YouTube (which is from the Adult Swim airing). Huh.
Boo Boo Runs Wild | March 10th 2002 - 11:15PM (Originally aired on Cartoon Network in 1999)
Boo Boo Runs Wild was another one of these stand-alone Yogi Bear John K specials. This one was 30 minutes long. The Ranger Smith short was a brief 7 minutes; I’m guessing they aired a couple Capt. Lingers or something to fill time.
This one is about Boo Boo reverting to his feral nature and causing BIIIIG problems! This special would later go on to be kind of a weird trolling thing Adult Swim would do where they aired it every Sunday for a few months, even promoting regularly. This was like 2006, I think? They’d also air it as part of April Fools. Is that Adult Swim admitting this special sorta sucks? Does it sorta suck? Again, I liked these at the time and REFUSED to actively rewatch these for this write-up. Sorry.
The Jetsons: Father and Son Day/The Best Son | March 10th, 2002 11:45PM (Originally aired on CartoonNetwork.com in 2001) Our John K rock block ends with a pair of Jetsons shorts, Father and Son Day and The Best Son respectively. This is kinda the same deal as his Yogi Bear shorts, but these were exclusive for Cartoon Network’s website. I remember watching them on there. They are as bad as you’d expect late-period John K internet shorts to be, though the second short is a superior version of Spielberg’s A.I. (in that it’s shorter).
Night of the Living Doo | March 17th, 2002 - 11:00PM (originally aired on Cartoon Network, 2001)
Night of the Living Doo originally aired as wraparound segments during a Halloween Scooby Doo marathon on Cartoon Network. It’s kinda like an episode of the Scooby Doo Movies, which shoehorned in a guest star each episode. Suddenly my man Dick Van Dyke be running a carnival and shit. That’s the Scooby Doo Movies. At the end of the night they played all the wraparound segments in one uninterrupted sitting, so the viewer could appreciate it as an actual full-on Scooby Doo episode. Night of the Living Doo functioned both as an extension of that series as well as a parody. The guests were Gary Coleman, David Cross, and the very cool band Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. It was all very self-deprecating and had jokes about the absurdity of Scooby Doo tropes. Well trod territory by this point, sure. But this is better than most irreverent Scooby Doo things. It didn’t hurt that I was a HUGE David Cross fan when this aired. Is this where I tell the stupid-ass story about getting mad at a message board guy for not liking David Cross? Sure. Okay, yeah. When this aired on Adult Swim a guy on Kon’s (hi Kon) message board posted something about not finding David Cross funny, shrugging that he didn’t get the hype. He cited this and his appearances in the Men in Black movies, and nothing else as proof for his lackluster comedy skills. It’s kinda like deeming Eddie Murphy as a bad comedian after watching Dr. Doolittle.
The point of this special is that David Cross is a little wooden and stilted, like in the old Scooby Doo Movies episodes. This poster revealed that he never heard David Cross’s stand-up or seen Mr. Show, explaining “I don’t watch puppet shows” A response that still baffles me to this day. Why Mr. Show isn’t a-- WHAT IS HE TALKING ABOUT? I’m not even sure if there was EVER a puppet on Mr. Show*. David wasn’t even a guest on Crank Yankers at this point! SO WHAT THE FUCK? To this day whenever mutual pals from that board get together and watch a movie or show and a puppet appears we make a joke about this guy. Good story? No? Fuck you.
Other stuff about this show: When it originally aired on Cartoon Network it was a little bit longer than the Adult Swim version. There’s a missing scene. I think it’s David trying to play an improv game with a mummy or something. At one point I had it on tape, but I’m not sure I kept it. Sorry.
*sorry to be coy here, but I do know of at least one puppet on Mr. Show, episode 204 there is brief footage of Grass Valley Greg putting on a puppet show for his staff. This CAN’T be the source of the confusion, can it? It’s literally like, 5 seconds.
MAIL BAG
This’ll teach me to skip a day cuz this really piled up. Thanks, guys. I love all the attention. It is my favorite thing.
I never really saw oblongs as something for the hot topic set. They had Invader Zim and Squee for that kind of shit. Oblongs feel like it was always directly targeting me: the shut-in comedy nerd who would appreciate will ferrell and the sklars being in a thing. Since they ended up doing the exact same show with Janeane Garofalo and David Cross a few years later it seems like that was the goal.
Yeah, I guess that also makes sense. There were a few elements that were kinda gothy but this show was mostly just Angus Oblong ahem, clowning around (puckering mouth to stifle laughter like Chris Elliott in Cabin Boy)
What are your thoughts on the other adult animation blocks of the past couple decades? Spike's notriously failed attempt. Animation Domination. Apparently Syfy has had their own going?
Spike was irredeemably bad. People think this shit is easy. Animation Domination is sorta legit, but it’s anchored by mostly crap. That ADHD thing was kinda good and underrated. Is that still going on? I wish I were more diligent about watching/recording that. Some of them bumpers were good. Also, we mustn’t forget MTV’s oddities. They were kinda the first cable network to court Adult Animation as their thing. They deserve some kind of credit for that. I’m sure they’re doing fine.
I'm having a nice big thing of spaghetti for dinner with some chicken parm? Jealous?
I’ve never had those are they good
What does Ephemera mean? Why is this happenening? Why aren't you talking about 10 Home Movies episodes in a row like a good boy.
In dude time, my friend. In dude time
What would be your Adult Swim dream come true?
Having a complete archive of Adult Swim blocks on a harddrive like Don Giller has with his Letterman archive. Even the commercials and shit. I know of a guy who was a regular taper of the entire block from night 1 but I’m not sure he kept up with it when they went nightly. I should ask him if he still has his tapes, huh?
That or they bring back the BUILD YOUR OWN DVD thing but with blu-rays and you can make your own bumps, which was a different thing they had. THEY SHOULD COMBINE THEM. And you can master it in SD if you wanna put 10 hours of stuff on a disk.
All this is archival bullshit dork shit. Real answer: Clay Croker comes back from the dead and every block is hosted by Space Ghost. That’d be it, right?
If anyone has genuine/better answers please write in with them I wanna keep this conversation going. ‘kay?
McDonalds reintroduces limited edition Adult Swim Toys. You can get them all (plus an extra to keep wrapped for collectors purposes) but you have to spend 20 dollars at McDonalds to grab them all. This is the last day of the promotion. You have to personally eat everything you buy but you can take it home. You can only buy one of each food item. What are you getting? I know the longer the mailbag message is the quicker you are inclined to give some glib remark but indulge this one for once.
Oh wow. I’m literally going to take this seriously. I’d roll in as breakfast was ending. Get myself a McChicken Biscuit and a Bacon Egg & Cheese McGriddle, hashbrowns and a Coffee. Gobble that knob on down. Wipe my mouth with a napkin. It’s lunchtime, bitch. Big Mac, Large Fries, BIG ass soda. You feel me, dude? Lemme tally up. Okay, probably need more. 20 piece nugget. Take that home cuz I’m probably gonna have to save some for dinner. That’s probably 20 bucks right there, especially if you go to the McDonalds on Burnside where all the menu items are more expensive because of the amount of security they have to hire (did you know that different McDonalds have different prices even in the same city? I didn’t until very recently). If this somehow doesn’t satisfy my price point I get a Vanilla shake and eat it anally DURING my BIG D squirt sesh, so it’ll spend as little time in my body as possible. Wait, do I get something for this? I might do this tomorrow just cuz. It sounds like a funky thing to do
Do you think you'll open an Adult Swim mueseum at some point? You seem to be the only steward of its history.
Unless I’m hired to by a large corporation, probably not. Also I don’t think I actually have much in the way of merch other than DVDs. I stopped being a DVD completist at some point around Freaknick The Musical. Oh, I never EVER bought a Robot Chicken DVD, EVER. I literally had a nightmare once that one appeared in my collection.
Hey! Please keep us abreast any time you put more of your garbage on eBay. Maybe you can put your wedding dress on there, you big girl.
Fucking sexist/trasphobic behavior.
Check out my eBay auctions I got season 18 of NCIS up there and some other things :)
The Ripping Friends blow chunks. I don't care if a rapist or the opposite of a rapist (a virgin who volunteers, lol) made it. It sucks a high hard one like when Ozzy banged the Cheiftan's Wife in that Black Sabbath TV Funhouse cartoon. Tell me more.
Tell you more?
Name one rap song you tolerate lol. You can't say anything by weird al or marky mark.
I guess I like the song the pest sings from the motion picture The Pest
Are there any good podcasts on adult swim?
The official one hosted by Matt Harrigan is good, but I’ve only bounced around on it. I don’t know if there’s any formal recap ones. I simply don’t know!
HE'S GIVING HIGH HARD ONE TO CHEIFTAN'S WIFE? UH OH!
Buddy, you are BANNED for LIFE from my MAIL BAG! You drive me CRAZY!

This is something a bit different from me, but in light of the recent announcement from Ubisoft that there’s going to be a remake of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time coming out in January 2021, I thought I’d share some thoughts.
(This started out small but got outta hand so super long post incoming, no spoilers for the games)
So first off, a bit of my history with the original game.
I’m a big fan of the Prince of Persia (PoP) franchise, and I’ll fully admit that nostalgia plays a big part in it. You see, in many ways this 2003 classic was my real entryway drug into the world of videogames.
It wasn’t the first videogame I had ever played. My friends had consoles, there were some games on the school computers, but I didn’t own games as a kid. As far as my parents were concerned, these were all the spoils and soul damning devices of Lucifer himself. You know how it is, every generation goes through this thing of blaming all the world’s problems on a new artform: rock and roll, comic books and then videogames.
So yeah, a gaming console or buying games for the home computer was a BIG NO-NO!
But of course, the more an authority figure says you can’t have something, the more you want and crave it. It was only a matter of time until the opportunity presented itself to me.
And then the day finally came.
It was just me and a couple of friends, going to this new magazine store near the school. And there it was: the dvd case that came with a gaming mag for like 5 euros if I remember correctly, stupid cheap for such a great game.
There was doubt, there was fear, there was anxiety. I didn’t know much about the game, only the old 1989 DOS Prince of Persia:
This had the same name but looked different. I was seduced immediately.
The case stared longingly at me:
It’s not my fault, I was bewitched and I bought it.
My symbol of rebellion, my first big transgression, and my first real treasured posession that I bought with hard earned money.
PoP:The Sands of Time was my original sin so to say:
Accurate representation of what happened that day
I furiously installed the game as soon as my parents left the house. Played it for a couple of hours and stood in awe at the thing - the cinematics, the cool parkour moves, the arabian nights setting, the time manipulation to undo mistakes when platforming or in combat, the Prince breaking the fourth wall saying:”no no no, that’s not what happened, let me start over” whenever I died and got a game over…
You have not experienced true fear if at some point in your life you didn’t feel the cold sweat running down your back as you hear the very distinct sound of your parents’ car arriving when you’re doing something “prohibited”.
As soon as I heard that sound, I quickly quit the game, uninstaled it (I could not run the risk of them finding out I had tainted their machine with a videogame *gasp!*), and ran to my room to hide the game before opening the door for them.
Neetheless to say, I never made much progress since I had to start over every time after quitting and uninstalling the thing. I would just play those first couple of hours over and over, never knowing how the story progressed, but I was happy all the same. At one point I knew every line of dialogue, every music cue, every sound effect of that beginning part. It would be some years before I got my first laptop and finally managed to complete it.
All of this to say that the game means a lot to me. Not just as a product or piece of entertainment. This wasn’t casually playing on someone’s gameboy advance or PS2 to have a bit of fun and pass the time.
This was more intimate.
It was just me; the game; a dark room and a blanket; and a sincere and charming, simple but compelling story told seamlessly through mechanics that only enhanced it. This was me witnessing gameplay and storytelling going hand in hand in a way that even many of my other favourite games don’t do, or don’t do as well (there’s usually some disconnect where a game only manages to really excel at one but not the other).
Ok, so on the announcement and trailer:
youtube
As a big fan you might think I was super hyped for this.
But I gotta say…no, not really.
I’m not super angry, but I’m not really excited either honestly. And I don’t think it’s just the rough and uncanny character models and animation that people are pointing out all over (although that doesn’t help).
I guess to talk a bit on that, I should stress out that my problem isn’t that it doesn’t look realistic enough. To be honest, and this is going to sound rich from a big Witcher 3 fan, I think that the gaming industry overall, moreso big tripple A titles, seem to have this unhealthy obsession with photorealism. Like, I don’t need to see the characters’s pores to care about these polygon people. Strong art direction is what I feel is more valuable. I just don’t think this arms race to photorealism is sustainable. Games are taking longer to make and fund, and I’d rather have dev teams spend more time polishing and refining the games’ mechanics and/or story if the trade-off is less “realistic” graphics.
It might just be personal preference, but I wish we were getting more stylized character and world design. Go look at some screenshots for Pathologic 2, a game that came out last year that hits that sweet spot between full-blown cartoony/caricature and realistic by today’s standards:
And I think that is somewhat what they were going for with this remake’s character models (or I hope it was). But it’s still not quite there, hopefully they’ll work on improving those so they can hit that sweet spot also.
(in defense of my hipocrisy and love of The Witcher 3, I think the more realistic look was appropriate for the world they were portraying, it benefits from it. However I don’t think I would love it any less if it had less detailed models and environments)
One last thing on the graphics.
I will say this though, at least from the footage we see in the new trailer the team seems to be capitalizing on colour. Big vibrant reds, blues, whites and yellows in the environment look great, and really captures the 1.001 nights/arabian nights feel that I absolutely love. I appreciate that since there’s always this tendency for remakes to suck all the colour and life from the original (in both games and movies), regardless if it fits the setting and tone or not.
Anyway, I think the reason I’m very much without a big reaction is that I believe the 2003 original is a true classic, a masterpiece even - I guess I should stress out that when I say masterpiece, I don’t mean it’s perfect. Just that the whole is bigger and better than the sum of its parts, that the things it does right, it does so right, that it completely overshadows the flaws.
The story, the art direction, the gameplay (the holy trinity of platforming, combat and puzzle solving), the brilliant introduction of the dagger of time as a gameplay and story mechanic (one of my favourite mechanics in all of gaming), the music, the charming duo that is the Prince and Farah, the tight pacing with the game being just the right length and not overstaying its welcome, the outstanding level design where you’re never stuck doing one thing for too long (the game is always juggling between combat, story, platforming and puzzles, mixing and matching)…
Looking at all these things, I just really don’t think we need a remake because I don’t think there’s that many glaring terrible flaws that could justify it.
Adding more scenes and content could be good, or it might backfire: bloat and ruin the game’s already excelent pacing and fluidity (which I think is the main keyword that better describes the original, everything flows superbly). The original was only 6-8 hours long and it is better for it. I’m not confident that adding dozens of hours of gameplay like the big tittles today would help at all.
The only real improvements I can see are:
tweeking and perfecting the combat (I’ve seen it mentioned that they’re implementing a targeting system which sounds good);
perhaps also better Farah’s A.I during combat when you have to help protect her from swarms of enemies;
Maybe throw in a couple more enemy types? The cut sand tigers for example?
usual things like adding the option of subtitles, add the ability to skip cutescenes;
But other than that…
I don’t even think the graphics of the original look bad. They’ve aged of course, with the game being 17 years old, but still. I installed it last night and played through the first hour to take some screenshots and I think they’re still good:
I can understand the MediEvil remaster, the Spyro remaster or the more recent FFVII remake in terms of wanting to update the graphics. I can understand that not everyone can easily go back to these low poly lads:
But this game? I know I’m influenced by nostalgia and all, but I don’t think it needs that makeover that badly, especially when compared to these other remakes and remasters. Funnily enough, I just noticed that these examples I just listed were all PS1 games. PoP: SoT was a PS2 , PC and Xbox game. PS2 era games have aged far better visually and don’t need that big a makeover in my most humble opinion.
It would be one thing if the original was out of print like a Rule of Rose scenario ,where you can’t find the game unless you go to ebay or something and it’s stupid expensive. Or if it was a pain to get running on modern systems like it was with Grim Fandango, until it got a remaster.
But no, you can find the Sands of Time trilogy and the PoP (2008) reboot on GOG and Steam (on Steam only there’s also the PoP:The Forgotten Sands midquel). So there isn’t the usual problem of the game no longer being accessible to people who want to play it, which helps justify the need for a remake.
The original still plays nice, sounds nice and looks nice, so I guess this all goes to show that at the end of the day, this remake just feels a bit unnecessary to me, at least from what little the trailer showed (I would love to have my bitter cynical ass proved wrong though!).
Maybe I just have a superhuman tolerance for older games and how they look, I really don’t have that big a problem if the game itself is good or interesting, so I don’t always think older games need remakes.
Maybe my falling out of love with Ubisoft in this last decade has curbed forever any hype I might have for their announcements, even when they pull out my son, my baby boy Prince of Persia out again.
Maybe I’m just burnt out and too pessimistic about remakes, remasters and adaptations (although game remakes usually do better than film ones).
And this makes me a bit sad because I don’t want to sh*t all over the first piece of “new” Prince of Persia content we’ve had since 2010??? Oof, it’s been a while.
Especially knowing that Yuri Lowenthal is coming back and excited to voice the Prince again. And I also don’t want to be too harsh since we’re looking at an alpha of the game. But so far I’m just very numb to this, I do seriously hope it turns out good and that they don’t rush it out the door. But I’m not convinced we need a remake in the first place. The original is a milestone, a game changer. I’d rather see a game that had great ideas and poor execution being remade than something people already love and consider a masterpiece.
Guess we’ll see how I feel once more news and footage come out.
Oh and feel free to share your own thoughts on this remake. I’m curious to know what both fans and newcomers alike think.
small edit: I can’t believe I was just watching this Sands of Time playthrough on youtube and at one point it is said: “Another game that is designed similarly to this is Soul Reaver actually.”
Of course! I didn’t even see it! All of my favourite things are connected!!! Maybe that detail was another thing that helped me getting really into Soul Reaver as I was first playing it.

Do you like cheese? Yeah but not to an obsessive extent like most people on the internet seem to be. I have a lower tolerance when it comes to cheeses with stronger or more pungent flavors, and I like sticking to those on the creamy side, like feta and burrata.
What type of shampoo do you use? Dove.
Do turtles make you happy? I mean not as much as dogs would but they are animals, so encountering one would still make me giddy and happy :)))
Name one person who snores in their sleep. Both of my parents, which is why I used to dread whenever we’d book a trip and there’s only one main room available for the 5 of us.
Would you walk around a grocery store with a bra as glasses? Sure, if I was gonna do it for like a cause or something. Or if I got paid for it. I can’t imagine why I’d ever have to casually/randomly do it. Also how would that even work, if it actually had to work as glasses???
Can you do the HoeDown ThrowDown? That movie came out when we were in the midst of moving houses and everything was super hectic in my little 10 year old life, so I never got to wach it, actually. I missed out on the whole Hoedown Throwdown craze and I distinctly remember jealously watching over my classmates as they danced it together.
Do you like Hershey's Chocolate bars? Just the cookies and cream variant.
What smiley face do you use the most? :) I very rarely use others.
What type of cell phone do you have? I have an iPhone 8.
Do you listen to rap? Not so much. For the most part, I stick to my tried and tested albums, like Jay-Z and Kanye’s Watch the Throne.
Look at something green, does it have batteries in it? That would be a nearby alcohol bottle, and no, it does not need batteries.
What's the first thing that comes to your mind when I say: PRINTER? Ink and paper.
What is the last cuss word you said out loud? Not so sure, but since I commonly say shit and fuck they could serve as safe enough guesses.
Do you like cows? Sure.
What kind of car does your mother drive? These days we split ‘my’ car between us since we sold our third car, which used to be the one she’d usually drive. The new arrangement used to bug me at first because it meant I now had to notify my mom in advance whenever I planned to drive out, but I’ve since gotten used to the setup.
What do you get in your tacos? I don’t eat tacos. Not that I dislike them; there are just many other Mexican dishes I find more filling.
What is your opinion on blueberries? As a flavor, it’s fine. But I actually tried an actual blueberry for the very first time last week when my aunt sent over a blueberry cheesecake - I really wanted to give it a chance, but I still found it nasty :( I really don’t know why I hate fruits so much lmao.
Are you currently wearing lip gloss/chap stick? Nopes.
Is there a bottle of lotion near you? There isn’t.
Name one person that you know that smokes. Sam smokes superexcessively. Like I’ve completely forgotten how much she can smoke in an evening until I hung out with her again a few weeks ago. It was half impressive and half terrifying; and my clothes ended up smelling because of it.
What's your favorite season? We don’t have the usual four seasons, but based on what I’ve seen in media, spring and winter look and feel the most pleasant to me.
Are any of your friends vegetarians? No.
What is one phrase that you hate hearing? “All lives matter” really pisses me off.
Can you name four presidents right now? Rodrigo Duterte, Ramon Magsaysay, Fidel Ramos, Diosdado Macapagal. But because I’m guessing this meant American presidents...George W. Bush, John F. Kennedy, Andrew Jackson, Harry Truman.
What is the first thing you think of when I say: HOOD? A jacket.
Do you currently own a cat? Nope.
What do you think of Ulta? I think of the fact that I’ve never heard of that before and I don’t actually know what this is referring to.
Have you ever walked into a club and asked for a Coke? No.
Do you like classical music? Sure, some.
What is your opinion on Oreos? I had the biscuits like a billion times as a kid to the point that I got sick of them. I will always pick the Oreo flavor in other desserts though, be it cheesecake, cupcake, cookies, milkshakes, tc.
Do you like Chips-Ahoy? No, tastes too artificial/processed. I’ll always go for freshly-baked cookies.
What did ya think of this survey? It was fine. I *think* I haven’t taken this before either, so that’s a plus lol.

survey by carolynnnnonia
1. What time did you wake up this morning? Around 6:30ish.
2. When did you take your default picture? It’s not a photo of me, it’s a still from BoJack Horseman. Years ago I saw someone on Twitter use it as a default and I found it hilarious, so I decided to do the same thing for this blog.
3. Are you hungry? Mmm not so much right now actually. I had a midnight snack that I only got to finish by like 2 AM so I still feel pretty filled.
4. Have you ever cheated on a test? Yup but just once. When I ended up perfecting the exam I cheated on, I felt like a fraud and I’ve never cheated since. I’d rather get an honest 99 than get a 100 that I’m ashamed of, lol.
5. When was the last time you ate ice cream? I think it had been last week when we had a cookies and cream tub in the fridge.
6. What computer game is in your CPU? I don’t play PC games and it’s been a hoooooot minute since I’ve seen a CPU.
7. Do you like Audrey Hepburn? You’ve come to the right person :))) Yup, obsessed. Have watched her entire filmography except for the ones that are impossible to find DVDs of or online.
8. What color is your winter jacket?
9. Do you have any siblings? Yup.
10. Would you call yourself skinny? Not anymore. I’ve filled up a bit over the last few years but I’m still usually seen as thin. I was a lot skinnier in my teens.
11. Does your phone take pictures? Yes, 2008 survey, it does.
12. Who is your favorite neighbor? They’re not really neighbors, but the construction workers who are currently working on a new house from across ours are crazy over Cooper and love to greet him and give him a few pats when I take him out. My actual neighbors are rather quiet and we tend to keep to ourselves.
13. Do you wish at 11:11? No.
14. Have you ever gotten a detention? We don’t have detention here.
15. Do you still watch Disney Channel? Nah, we took out our cable last year because no one was using it anymore. And I doubt there’s anything watchable on Disney Channel for a twentysomething?? Lmao I usually stick to the shows and movies I grew up with, so.
16. Who did you last IM? Angela.
17. Who is your least favorite teacher? Whoever hated me for no reason in middle and high school. Then in college, I had to power through a misogynist, sexist, delusional Duterte-supporting professor for an entire semester as well.
18. What were you doing six hours ago? I was winding down and watching Good Mythical Morning videos to eventually doze off.
19. What is your ringtone? Just the default iPhone ones.
20. Does your door have a dead bolt on it? I had to look this up haha but yeah.
21. Have you ever been to a show? Like, a live shooting of a show? Hmm....I don’t remember ever going to one yet. I remember being invited to one because they needed seat fillers, but I had school at the time and was never available on the day of the shoot.
22. What are some details about your first kiss? Innocent, pure. Even though that person ended up disappointing me, I don’t regret having my first kiss with them.
23. What college do you want to attend/currently attend? I went to UP.
24. Have you had any soda today? No and I most likely won’t.
25. What is your favorite scary movie? Carrie, The Shining, and Evil Dead are some good ones.
26. Do you own a Wii? We used to and it was a big part of my late childhood to my early teens. We had thrown it out years ago, though, because it stopped working.
27. Did you wear shorts today? I currently am wearing shorts, yeah, and I plan on wearing shorts for the rest of the day.
28. Anything fun happening this weekend? There’s an official Kim Seonho fanmeet happening tonight on Facebook and I’m so excited for it lmaaaaaaoooo
29. What shoes did you wear today? One of my sneakers.
30. What is your favorite type of Pop Tart? We only get 5 flavors here in the Philippines, but my favorite is the chocolate fudge one.
31. Do you subscribe to any magazines? Nope.
32. What was the last television show you watched? I didn’t watch it on TV, but I watched a few clips from this show called Caught in Providence on Facebook. I have such a soft spot for that show.
