This is gonna be two separate parts just to space things out! Let’s start with some Maríanne stuff!

MARÍ’S FAMILY:

Has an older brother with a 12 year age gap, his name is Estefan Villanueva (his name was changed it might change again). He took care of Maríanne when she was much younger. When he got older he found himself a husband with a kid. His future husband helped him raise Maríanne along with his own child.

Her parents are out of commission. It didn’t end well for them. Maríanne thinks about them sometimes but was mostly raised by her brother.

There are some extended family members in Mexico but some died during the revolution. But she has some aunts, uncles, and cousins still kicking!

MARÍ’S JOB:

Oh, yeah, it fluctuates. When she first arrived at Lackadaisy, she started working at the Daisy’s Cafe as a waitress. Taught Ivy the ropes when she came to work there.

Then to keep her mind busy, she becomes Mordecai’s assistant and does a bit of accounting (mostly in her head).

At the same time she starts to work out again and regains her strength, she catches the attention of Atlas. He put her as a trigger man but she always got hurt because she refuses to kill the enemies with a gun (this mentality won’t last forever) and only fights with her fists. She really tries Mordecai’s patience.

The last straw was when she took in a rival gang member and that’s when Mordecai insisted that she doesn’t join their trigger man ventures anymore. Of course, she is still brought along as extra muscle but only for negotiations, but she just cooks books with Mordecai for the most part.

DOES SHE KNOW ABOUT MARIGOLD?

Oh yeah. Yeah she does. When she finds about Mordecai joining them and betraying Lackadaisy, she’s pissed. Once she finds him, she tackles the hell out of him. After almost killing each other, they talked things out like civilized people (if pointing a shotgun and pistol at each other was civilized). They soon made a deal and allied with each other.

MARÍ’S RELATIONSHIPS/THOUGHTS Pt. 1:

Rocky 🎪🎭🎻:

As part of my “The Rattlesnake and the Jester” AU, they met on the road. After a few coincidences of meeting each other while Maríanne was traveling to Florida, they decided to stick with each other because why not, better than being alone. They do split off but not my by choice. Once they find each other again at Lackadaisy it was a joyous day!

They have a close relationship, always getting into trouble with each other. Performing together on the streets almost everyday made them in synch with each other, it frightens a lot of people when they mimic each other perfectly or say the same sentences at the same time. Chaotic in the streets and chaotic on the dance floors. Swear up and down, they can communicate telepathically by squishing their foreheads together. Their love is a little codependent (totally won’t backfire) but it’s a good one.

They act so stupid and goofy when they’re together, so much so it makes people underestimate them. Together they’re a dynamic duo and can swindle people in a heart beat with their combined charm. One moment you’re like “aww look how stupid they are” and next thing you know, whoops! Your wallet is gone. 🔥Partners in crime!🔥

Her first impressions of him: “He’s cute, funny, charismatic, weird, talkative, but I like it. I love hearing his frantic rambles and poetry, even though I don’t understand the bigger English words.”

Current thoughts: “I will die and fight for him (yep they’re getting together). I still think of him the same way but I understand his rambles now. I like joining in his chaos but I will pull it back once it gets too dangerous or it risks other people’s lives. He’s my safe space and wherever he goes, I follow. I don’t want to lose him again. “

Mordecai 🔪⏱️🔫:

Her mentor (Mordecai never agrees with it but it’s the truth). Back in New York, Marianne’s brother owned a shelter/soup kitchen where Mordecai and his family stopped by from time to time. Marianne’s brother hired Mordecai to be his accountant once he got to know him. Baby Maríanne always followed Mordecai around when he came to the shelter and watched him work. Despite being annoyed by this clingy little child, he’d let her watch because she stayed quiet.

During their prime lackadaisy era, it was no different. Maríanne would come into his office and watch him work or even help him (or tries to, she just ends up being more of an unpaid secretary instead of a fellow accountant cuz Mordecai is very picky).

First Thoughts-“I admire him and I aspire to be like him (people often wonder why). I try to adopt his menacing and stoic demeanor, but it never works. Next best thing is trying to be as agile and quick thinking as him. I really trusts in his advice and judgement. Often finding myself looking to him for answers but I’m not afraid to question them. He keeps me grounded and I’m grateful for the amount of times he kept my mind busy with work. Better than dwelling on the past. Occasionally, I fear him and fear for him. I don’t understand how he can be so cruel but I’m jealous on how quickly he can turn off his emotions. How does he sleep at night?”

Current thoughts: “Can I still trust him?”

Zib and the band🎺🎷🥁🎹🎻:

She loves them. They’ve helped her get through her toughest days and always went to them on her break. They’d sing and dance with each other to the annoyance of most. They f e e d into her gambling addiction (always tempted to gamble her house keys, cuz she believes she’s that good) and she always plays poker with the band. For fun she often plays their instruments, always reaching the trumpet more (iykyk). Marí always hangs with them until Mordecai has to drag her by the scruff to bring her back to work.

She’d mostly do some late night drinking with Zib and they both just wallow in self pity together. ✨Depressed drinking buddies✨ She’d often go to him to learn more about poetry and (before their reunion) would ask him to explain Rocky’s poems to her.

First Thoughts: “They’re fun! I understand why Mordecai refers to them as “lazy hooligans” but I always finds them as a place of peace to let loose. A bunch of talented cool cats! Deep down I want to sing with them on stage but the dance floor just calls to me.

Current thoughts: “They deserve better.”

Viktor 🔧⚒️🛻:

A friend but only talks to him on occasion. She know that Viktor pities her but she doesn’t take it to heart. Marí slightly fears him but sees him as a place to run when they’re creepy men tailing her.

First Thoughts: “Tall. Tall scary fluffy man. I find him incredibly intimidating but I want to be as strong as him. His unwavering strength encouraged me to get strong again. I always feel tempted to ask him to throw me at the enemies. Like a surprise attack! But he’d probably stare at me. I’m definitely going to use his stare as a negotiation tactic.”

Current thoughts: “I pity him.”

Chapter 65 Status Checks

Now that we're well into the arc, I want to take stock of where our major players are.

All Those Guilty MFers and the Hishaku

Chihiro: still doing MC things with the plot, nothing's happening without him any time soon (probably). Beat up and tired but still going. He's guilty over a few things, namely 1. being a "murderer" that ignored the adults who wanted him to avoid their mistakes and 2. Hakuri being out of commission in the hospital. Vowed to become Hakuri's samurai, protect Iori, and learn the Iai White Purity style in 24 hours.

Hakuri: recovering off-screen in the Kamunabi hospital by getting special treatment to heal the nerves he damaged, as far as we know. Not likely to appear soon but he's definitely not forgotten. Guilty over what happened with Ice Lady and Uruha, feels like he needs to measure up to Chihiro's assessment of his "value". Asked the Masumi to protect Chihiro in his stead.

The Hishaku: John, Hiruhiko, and Worst Jeanist are holed up in what passes for the Hishaku's HQ it seems, letting Kuguri and Toto do the dirty work of capturing Iori. The whereabouts and status of Hatshaku, Jane Hishaku, Samurai Hishaku, and the other two core members are unknown.

Iori: Successfully rescued by Chihiro and the Masumi and safe for at least the next 24 hours. Told to make her choice about keeping her memories or returning to blissful ignorance once she gets them all back.

The Kamunabi: Observing the situation by letting Chihiro and the Masumi handle it on their behalf. Doing something shady with Uruha's corpse too, no doubt. No updates on what Hiyuki and Tafuku are doing at this time.

The Masumi: Protecting Chihiro because they feel indebted to Hakuri after he saved their lives. Letting Chihiro steer the course while they devote themselves to protecting him and Iori. Want to re-apply the seal on Iori's memories but will likely respect the choice she makes.

Samura: Hiding out somewhere in Japan waiting for someone to try and use an Enchanted blade so he can teleport to their location and murk them. Guilty as fuck over whatever The Incident was during the Seitei War, killing in general, and being a bad example for Iori to follow.

Shiba: Doing offscreen things as usual probably. Guilty as hell about not doing enough to steer Chihiro away from the path he chose or being able to stop him from risking his life.

Where Are All the Blades, Anyway?

Enten- with Chihiro, but he can't use it right now. Unknown if he bonded to it again or not yet.

Kumeyuri - with Hiruhiko, but he can't use it right now. Bonded to him and he intends to master it purely on instinct, much to Kuguri's disgust.

Kuregumo - broken by Chihiro. The hilt was used up and crumbled into dust, but Chihiro still has the tip of the blade in his possession (per Word of God in an interview).

Magatsumi/The Shinuchi: resealed and with the Kamunabi.

Tobimune - with Samura, who is using the Owl power to suppress the usage of other enchanted blades.

Unknown Blade 1 - implied to be with Kuguri. Likely belongs to the Sushi Chef bearer, with whom its bond is still active.

Unknown Blade 2 - presumed to be the Girlish Bearer's blade that she's still bonded to; with the Hishaku.

Who Are/Were the Bearers?

Chihiro Rokuhira: Kunishige's son and the main character. We know who he is.

Hiruhiko: A member of the Hishaku that's the same age as Chihiro, but with way more screws loose. Enjoys killing and thinks friendship means trying to kill each other over personal differences. Has a father-son like relationship to John.

Misaka: Kuregumo's former bearer; the first to die to the Hishaku three years ago before the rest were rounded up into the sanso. All other details unknown.

Seiichi Samura: Seitei War veteran who blinded himself out of guilt over killing. Iori's absent father who wanted her to forget him. Assistant Master of the Iai White Purity style and Uruha's former instructor. Intends to kill both the Hishaku and the rest of the living Bearers then himself. Current obstacle for Chihiro to overcome this arc.

Genichi Sojo: Parasocial obsessive fan of Kunishige's who worshipped his headcanon of the man instead of the real thing. Child torturer, murderer, and the genius who provided the Hishaku with usable datensenki shards. Fought Chihiro with Kuregumo and died explosively.

The Sword Master: Magatsumi's weilder, currently imprisoned in Kamunabi HQ. Doesn't seem wholly sane.

Unknown Man: A sushi chef with one blind eye. A Seitei War veteran who really likes making sushi. Bonded to the blade Kuguri's carrying.

Unknown Woman: A young-looking woman. Bonded to the other unknown blade in the Hishaku's possession.

Yoji Uruha: Kumeyuri's former bearer; a Seitei War veteran who was killed by Samura. User of the Iai White Purity style, Samura's former student. Body is currently in autopsy at the Kamunabi's medical facilities.

What type of plant would Harding gift your Rook? Cara: a little assortment of kitchen herbs Leyla: an arrangement of air plants with moss and stones

Do they like Harding's cooking? Cara is on board with the other team members that Harding maybe should not cook that often. Yet she is an absolute sucker for Ham and Jam Slam Sandwiches, which everyone think is very odd. Leyla actually likes Hardings food. It may be the shared dwarf genes, but many of Hardings recipes ring something deep in Leyla that reminds her of something she can't really name or describe.

What animal/monster would Davrin carve for your Rook? Cara: A cat Leyla: One of those earth diving slug worms from the Wetlands. Leyla finds them funny

Does your Rook like the walks in Arlathan with Davrin? Cara: Yes!!!! Leyla: Yes!!!!

What is something Neve could call on your Rook for if she needs certain expertise for a case? Cara: specifics on enchanted shields and the technique how to utilize a shield as a ranged weapon and where to go to have something like that crafted. Leyla: Where to find the best tailors for very specific commissions. Like how to make clothes look good on dwarves that are designed for bigger people originally. Also what to ask for to get clothes that are specifically designed to be useful and stylish while carrying a lot of stuff/weapons/potions and valuables without looking like a stuffed chicken.

Does your Rook share Neve's love of fried fish? Cara: Not particularly, but she is not appalled by it either Leyla: She loves it. Leyla loves food in general and street food has a special place in her heart in particular

Does your Rook join Bellara in her technical talks about the Fade and various artifacts or are they more content to listen? Cara: Loves to sit and watch and listen to everything that Bellara wants to talk about. Leyla: She listens more than she actually can be of any help but she asks a lot of questions and picks up a lot of things along the way.

Do your Rook and Bellara read serials together? Cara: Absolutely. Cara is in the book club 110% and she would even be willing to beta read for Bellara if she would want that. Leyla: She does not particularly share Bellara's love for serials but she would join some reading for a good time together and may end up reading here and there a whole story but it will not become a passion like for others in the team.

What is your Rook's favorite dish that Lucanis cooks? Cara: Churros (There is a story behind that and I'm just writing it) Leyla: She loves especially, when he cooks something super-Antivan. She considers Treviso her home and loves the Antivan culture and especially the food.

What would Lucanis buy for your Rook at the Grande Market? Cara: Probably a masterfully handcrafted hairpin from bone or some pretty wood. Leyla: Something particularly Antivan/Trevisan. He knows she has a very strong bond with the city and often feels a bit homesick. Later in their relationship, he will know who her tailor is and order a pretty piece of clothing or a matching accessory to the things she owns.

What dragon would Taash think your Rook would like the best? Cara: Taash will know that Cara loves those dragons most, who mind their business and won't need to be hunted and killed. Leyla: Taash knows that Leyla in general is not super fond of dragons but will never say no to go on a hunt if there's a need to. But she really despises those who breathe electricity.

Do they bring your Rook 'round the Hall of Valor to drink often? Cara: she likes to hang out with Taash no matter where. And they go out fairly often. Over time, when they discover what a big fan of the Crows Taash is, they often end up at the Cantori Diamond, hanging out with Teia and other Crows. Leyla: Leyla loves hanging out at the Hall of Valor. They go there fairly often and its always long and merry nights.

Would your Rook like Emmrich's mother's hazelnut torte? Cara: She has a sweet tooth and of course she will like that masterpiece of pâtisserie art. Leyla: She loves food in general and loves to taste food from everywhere. This torte is in general a bit heavy for her tastes but here and there a piece with a good coffee - she won't never say no to it, because its delicious, her love made it and its a family recipe of one of her friends.

What kind of tea would Emmrich make for your Rook? Cara: Earl Grey Leyla: Spiced Chai with frothed milk (chai latte?)

Bonus: What is one thing a companion does to cheer up your Rook if they're feeling down? Cara: They (Probably Lucanis or Bellara) will call in a game, drink and story night with everyone hanging out in the kitchen and they will all be coming having a good time together. Leyla: Neve will take her shopping and hanging out together for dinner and drinks to either Treviso or Dock Town.

Besides figuring out that I unintentionally made Wyn a wannabe TLT girlie, my Curse of Strahd game is slowly becoming the "clown on the wizard" show. He's got this INCREDIBLE tendency to act very kind and proper and respectable to strangers while being secretly a tiny bit morally bankrupt, and Wyn has clocked him for it multiple times, so she spends a lot of her "former mischievous little sister" energy on taking the piss out of him. So when an NPC quite innocently noted that he wasn't like a lot of the wizards in the books that she read - who were all wizened men of great power and even greater beards - she suggested that maybe when he becomes a powerful wizard, he'll be able to grow one.

Which is to say, I'm 100% going to have Wyn paint a portrait of our wizard with a long, magnificent beard to "show him what he'll look like when he's a real wizard one day."
