On the edge of tears listening to 1984 by George Orwell (this is my first time reading it) and hearing the words “By 2050, earlier, probably, all real knowledge of oldspeak will have disappeared. Thinking about vampires, death, life, and the space they occupy in between

anyone interested in talking about the iconic 2000's middle-grade-bordering-on-ya book series gallagher girls??
#okay incoming rant about this series#i read the first book when i was 10 or 11 and i was absolutely obssessed with it. i read it so many times i had the entire story memorized#the issue was that i could not find the rest of the series anywhere. it was either sold out or out of stock#and then i found out that only the first 3 books had been translated into my first language so at that point i kinda gave up on them#anyway#flashforward to a couple of weeks ago#i was re organizing my bookshelf and on the back i found LYKY (is this how y'all are abreviating it??)#and remembred how much i loved it#and since i'm now fluent in english and was stuck at home recovering from a surgery i decided to download the entire series and read it#to find out what the fuck happened afterwards#long story short i read all six books in 4 or 5 days#and i haven't stopped thinking about them since#it's actually so funny how little information we have in the first book#i went all of these years thinking it was mostly a silly series about a boarding school for spies when actually SO MUCH happens afterwards#i can't believe i went all of these years unaware of zach goode's existence#truly character of all time#but also i can't stop thinking about how interesting it would have been if zach had come to hate the circle and his mom during the series#rather than before#make it a true enemies to lovers#and have us witness that portion of his character developement in real time instead of being told about it#like him slowly realizing through cammie and his time at gallagher that maybe what they were doing is wrong#i think it would have been very interesting to read#although let's be real it took me until halfway through book four to trust him and he was fully one of the good guys so..#but yeah i have a lot more to say but these tags are long enough#gallagher girls#okay i just want to add another funny anecdote about my experience with this series#my copy of LYKY has an age warning in the back recomending that readers should be above 13 yo to read it#and i distinctly remember finishing it and thinking the warning was kind of dumb bcs besides a few mentions of death and other heavier topi#nothing really happened#and now i realize it was a warning for the rest of the series not just the first book because jesus fucking chirst everything after

I've been thinking about the tragedy of Elizabeth Woodville living to see the end of her family name.
I don't mean her family with her husband, which lived on through her daughter and grandson. I mean her own.
Her sisters died, one by one, many of them after 1485. When Elizabeth died, only Katherine was left, and she would die before the turn of the century as well.
All her brothers died, too. Lewis died in childhood. John was executed. Anthony was murdered. Lionel died suddenly in the peak of Richard's reign, unable to see his niece become queen. Edward perished at war. Richard died in grieving peace. For all the violence and judgement the family endured, it was "an accident of biology" that ended their line: none of the brothers left heirs, and the Woodville name was extinguished. We know the family was aware of this. We know they mourned it, too:
“Buy a bell to be a tenor at Grafton to the bells now there, for a remembrance of the last of my blood.”
Elizabeth lived through the deposition and death of her young sons, and lived to see the end of her own family name. It must have been such a haunting loss, on both sides.
#(the quote is by Richard Woodville in his deathbed will; he was the last of the Woodville brothers to die)#elizabeth woodville#woodvilles#my post#to be clear I am not arguing that the death of an English gentry family name is some kind of giant tragedy (it absolutely the fuck is not)#I'm trying to put it into perspective with regards to what Elizabeth may have felt because we know her family DID feel this way#writing this kinda reminded me of how I am just not fond at all about the way Elizabeth's experiences in 1483-85 are written about#and the way lots so many of the unprecedentedly horrifying aspects are overlooked or treated so casually:#the seizure and murder of two MINOR sons and the illegal execution of another;#her sheer vulnerability in every way compared to all her queenly predecessors; how she was harassed by 'dire threats' for months;#how she had 5 very young daughters with her to look after at the time (Bridget and Katherine were literally 3 and 4 years old);#how unprecedented Richard's treatment of her was: EW was the first queen of england to be officially declared an adulteress;#and the first and ONLY queen to be officially accused of witchcraft#(Joan of Navarre was accused of her treason; she was never explicitly accused of witchcraft on an official level like EW was)#the first crowned queen of england to have her marriage annulled; and the first queen to have her children officially bastardized#what former queens endured through rumors* were turned into horrifying realities for her.#(I'm not trying to downplay the nightmare of that but this was fundamentally on a different level altogether)#nor did Elizabeth get a trial or appeal to the church. like I cannot emphasize this enough: this was not normal for queens#and not normal for depositions. ultimately what Richard did *was* unprecedented#and of course let's not forget that Elizabeth had literally just been unexpectedly widowed like 20 days before everything happened#I really don't feel like any of this is emphasized as much as it should be?#apart from the horrifying death of her sons - but most modern books never call it murder they just write that they 'disappeared'#and emphasize that ACTUALLY we don't know what happened to them (this includes Arlene Okerlund)#rather than allowing her to have that grief (at the very least)#more time is spent dealing with accusations that she was a heartless bitch or inconsistent intriguer for making a deal with Richard instead#it also feels like a waste because there's a lot that can be analyzed about queenship and R3's usurpation if this is ever explored properly#anyway - it's kinda sad that even after Henry won and her daughter became queen EW didn't really get a break#her family kept dying one by one and the Woodville name was extinguished. and she lived to see it#it's kinda heartbreaking - it was such a dramatic rise and such a slow haunting fall#makes for a great story tho

I admit to being the kid who went to bed and woke up 3-4 hours before the others#you either get fed up and wake someone else up for enrichment - or plan ahead to bring a book - or Walk Home#I fully missed out on all that deep heart to heart stuff. I usually was the one to go 'guysssss we are gonna get in troubleeee go to sleep'#wait this is too much sleepover talk I need to talk about wwx in the last panel. some people in this fandom are going to be really disappointed when winds of winter comes out.
you guys. you cannot treat the POV characters as stepping stones for other characters/other POV characters.
the POV characters must have a fitting end according to their character arcs, themes, foreshadowing, etc.
to clarify, the POV characters chapters are about THEM. their storylines are about THEIR journey. you cannot use their hundreds of pages of character development as a brick to build the castle your fav will live in.
this is especially true for the key 5 and for the other younger POV characters. their endings have everything to do with them, they do not revolve around your fav.
us readers out-of-universe reasons for wanting x or y characters deaths does not matter. what actually matters is if you can support your theories with textual evidence from the chapters of the POV character that you want dead.
#i dont think there’s anything in the books that supports a theory of a member of the key 5 dying permanently#i think you could make a case for dany temporarily dying like jon for her third death and rebirth. but that’s it.#maybe winds of winter will set up the permanent death of one of the younger POV characters.#but so far there’s really not enough evidence to be sure of x or y characters deaths#and if you want their deaths based on ‘feels’ or due to unobjective reasons then i’m afraid that you will be unhappy#wanting a marginalized characters death especially as they’re igniting hope/recovering from abuse/trying to make change is very gross#i want to say that i totally understand what it’s like to be put off from a character due to that characters fandom#(happened to me with the sansa stans on here. they’re real nasty)#but the best thing to do is to distance yourself from that portion of the fandom and to try to not let your hate color ur opinion#i’m acting kinda self righteous sorry guys 😞#just a bit sad cause i’m seeing a lot of jon hate today <\3#asoiaf fandom critical#asoiaf#a song of ice and fire

Actually kind of tired of seeing people qualify shows as QL or queer coming-of-age instead of BL when they’re perceived to depict any aspect of the gay experience beyond two guys just falling in love.
#1. BL is a gay romance genre. Is it gay and about love and influenced by the gay Asian media boom? Then it’s BL—happy ending or not#2. Some people are too married to the definitions of the romance genre as defined by the romance book marketing industry…#but I think we ought to recognize how staunch dedication to market demands can hamper art and exploration#3. The word a lot of people are looking for with their happy endings and formulas is actually “romantic comedy” not BL.#4. Works can also fit into more than one genre!!! It can be murder mystery plot-driven and still be BL!!!#5. QL would be a useful term if we were dealing with issues of gender in the main romance but few shows are giving us that#6. Yes I know the origin story of the term BL but many of the novels and manga were more transgressive than acknowledged…#And the live action series have included queer issues since the start…#And it’s only one branch of BLs that ever promised happy endings#7. Genres are inherently unruly and the impetus to gatekeep them is silly at best and at worst detrimental to one's growth...#Instead of excluding certain kinds of gay love from BL just get better at describing the tones and plot structures and themes of shows...#BL drama#kbl#thai bl#korean bl#taiwan bl#japanese bl#Litbc#<- this is about this show and so many others!!!

I finished reading The Day of the Jackal and I have never in my life read a book that has almost nothing in common with its adaptation lmfaooo
#a few character names and a teeny bit of the jackal’s backstory being the only things they carried over to the show 😭#the day of the jackal#I know the show had to change a lot of the plot in order to modernize it#but damn they really created something completely different#I prefer the show 🤥 apologies to the book lovers#there are some aspects of the jackal I liked in the book#and some characters I wish they’d carried over (like Rodin and KOWALSKI!!! and Jacqueline)#but other than that the show is more interesting and I felt more invested in the jackal and other characters than I did in the book#gave it a 3/5. the details in the book are crazy though

hhhhhh I need to properly reread Percy jackson again. This post brought to you by the fact I was about to make a post about a scene I very vividly remember of Will Solace trying to convince Pollux not to keep fighting with his good arm broken before Percy manages to convince him not to bc he promised Dionysus, then thought to myself "huh maybe I should fact check that- I mean I did also convince myself that Travis stoll died in this battle when he actually just went to college." And guess what? That scene ✨️didn't happen.✨️ Pollux was trying to convince Percy to let him rejoin the fight very half heartedly, while propped against a tree, and Percy was just like "hmmmm... no"

It was literally JUST that battle and over the course of like 3 days#Here's some I found while skimming my copy of tlo for the scene in question:#Nico trying to rescue/ speak to his mum ft. Hades being a really shitty person (& shittier father)#Rachel's family helicopter almost crashing#Percy having a conversation with may castellan#Luke very belatedly realising “hm maybe I shouldn't give complete control of my body and mind to kronos”#This one random half-asleep demigod Percy runs into at one point that might’ve been Clovis? The demigod was said to be 12 tho-#So maybe his brother?#Prometheus shows up and gives Percy Pandora's jar#Percy getting thrown in prison by Hades and STRANGLES NICO FOR BRINGING HIM TO THE UNDERWORLD????#nico sends the guards to sleep tho so yay dream powers from his dad#And then Achilles's ghost shows up and basically just goes “are you fucking stupid or something. Why would you want my curse”#Chiron brings the party ponies to fight (they got drunk on rootbeer instead)#I think literally the only things from this book I accurately remembered were#1. Michael Yew convinces Percy to destroy a bridge while he's still on it#2. Annabeth moves to protect Percy's weak spot before she even knew where it was#3. One of Silenus's brothers dies and grover gets to be part of the council#4. Silena regrets being a spy and steals clarisse's armour to fight a drakon#5. Clarisse is PISSED that she did something so stupid and kills the drakon with her father's blessing#6. The fact Percy and Luke actually managed to converse during the Final Battle tm and Luke told Percy his weak spot#7. Ethan is a character who existed and then died. He was the son of Nemesis#Hm actually that's a lot more than I thought#But again there are Things happening in this book and there are Many Of Them and most of them are pretty fucked up actually.#anyway#pjo#Something something how is this a kids book etc

I’m was watching a podcast interview with Henry Selick and he got asked if there would ever be a sequel to TNBC and he said that he has a idea. He wants to do five minutes short Jack, Sally married through the perspective of Zero. I don’t know what we have to do but we got to make this happen.
Would you mind linking me to the podcast? This sounds interesting!
I know Henry Selick said last year that a TNBC Prequel would be more interesting to do than a Sequel (a sentiment I share 100%), but it's cool to know that he's still considering ideas for a continuation. I assume he was talking in regards to a TV/Disney+ short? Zero's perspective would be fun to see, since you can spot little details his way in the movie. He got his own comic book sequel, so I can't say it's something that hasn't been done before, but I'd love to see more love Zero's way and a glimpse into Jack & Sally's married life!
Luckily, we're still getting a sequel to Long Live the Pumpkin Queen which will likely explore Jack & Sally's marriage, and hopefully show more spotlight on Zero. I would think for Henry Selick's sequel idea here to come to fruition, he'd have to get Tim Burton + his team and Disney onboard with the idea.

INVADER ZIM HEADCANONS BECAUSE. YAAAYYYYY

Main characters:
-Irken show affection by entangling their antenna together. So Zim wraps his antenna around Dibs hair spike
-Zim shoplifts candy from the store (and Dibs fridge) other times he gets Gir to steal stuff
-Once Dib ate cup noodles for 3 weeks straight. He hasn't done it since
-Dib still has the snarl beast
-He's also very good at drawing, most of his drawings being of him and Zim
-Dib probably gets dizzy when he stands up too fast
-Gaz and Tak like playing games together, Tak is super bad at them though
-Gaz is really into robotics, that's why Professor Membrane doesn't pressure her into science like he does with Dib. In fact she programmed her "security" plushies all by herself
-Gaz HAS and WILL doxx people
-Gir and MiMi are very lady and the tramp coded
-Gir would be best friends with Jenny Wakeman
-Gir CONSTANTLY steals drinks, not only from people he knows either. Like in a restaurant he will just take a big sip of someones drink and walk away
Other characters:
-Zita is a theater kid, she puts the most effort in school plays compared to everyone else
-Carl has literally anything and everything in his beanie. Need a spare pencil? He's got it. Need a notebook? It's in there. Need a bag of chips? You know he has it. But he won't ever give it to you. Like Pinkie Pie except Carl isn't helpful
-Gretchen actually can tell really good jokes, she just doesn't tell them
-Jessica and Letty are lesbian I swear to god they are
-Poonchy is a lot like Tobias from the amazing world of gumball except maybe a little less mean
-Mr. Elliot is Ms. Bitters son, he likes being around her so he got the same job as her (despite her protests)
-Mr. Dwicky probably killed that guy in the vents. Among us imposter ass
-Miyuki and Sporks tallest uniforms seem to be slightly different than Red and Purples, the slight adjustments are there to prevent Zims monsters from eating them
General:
-Hugs from behind are very beloved since you're basically hugging their PAK which is like, their everything
-Irken relationships are heavily looked down upon until they are officialized
-Tallest DNA is used for reproduction by being put in a lil tube until a smeet develops
-Tallest colors are passed down (I don't reaaally headcanon this but I think it's a cute idea)

-Alien hominid landed on earth after the Irken empire took over his planet. He really hates Zim

#reading thread#talking to strangers#four books in already!!! i have set a relatively low goal for myself (30 books) because my goals are less numerical and#more about expanding my horizons / reading genres i usually don't / reading books that have been on my tbr for a long time#i'm off to a strong start for the year but i also know i tend to start off really well and then slump hard a few times later on#so we will see how it goes! anyway my thoughts on my first 4 books#i always start my year off with a reread of an old favorite so i know i'm starting with a 5 star read <3 hence the roger ackroyd reread#now not to brag or anything but i figured out who the murderer was the very first time i read roger ackroyd...#still absolutely diabolical though. second greatest mystery novel of all time (orient express will always win first place)#winter hours was good! very thought provoking and really made me want to write which is always great#the bear and the nightingale!!! i really enjoyed it and yes i did cry. i got the sequel from the library yesterday hehe#moon of the crusted snow was alright! i liked it a lot more conceptually than i did in practice tbh#anyway <3333 happy reading in 2025 besties!!!!
