When you really think about it, Daniel Molloy being a vampire is objectively terrifying. This is a guy who, as a mortal:

- Followed a stranger to a second location in peak serial killer era California.

- Was down to fuck in a coffin.

- Was down for fangs in his neck.

- Consistently interviewed dangerous or powerful people and was antagonistic to them.

- Literally never stopped when on the hunt for a story to the point it destroyed his personal life.

- Got on a plane in the middle of a pandemic with a degenerative disease because the guy he barely remembers following to some place on Divisadero, who he knows is an immortal killing machine, is offering Daniel his story and this also means Daniel could get some clarity on his fucked up memory.

- Has a big fucking mouth. He will just say fucking anything regardless of it being inappropriate.

- Has a fantastic bullshit radar.

- Beat a professional gaslighter at 3D chess.

...and then said powerful 514yo gaslighter gives this man litres of his, essentially, untouched blood and makes him his fledgling? Like...INSANE.

Daniel is, no doubt, EXTREMELY powerful and with a personality type that will probably make him a good vampire. Absolutely terrifying...and hot. God I hope he's still "sun challenged."

Episode Seven and White Tears

The trial's allegory is not just a lynching, it is a lynching for a Black person entering a relationship with a respected White man, and proceeding to leave him. It's not a murder case, as seen through the show, there's actually very little emphasis on the murder in the episode in regards to Louis. The emphasis is on his "seduction", his "ungiving nature", and "refusing to give his body". It is a public humiliation and lynching for turning a respected white man down. The crime isn't hurting Lestat, it's hurting his feelings.

Lestat doesn't speak to the audience about the pain of his throat being slit. He speaks of loneliness, the audience chants and jeers about how cheating was justified if Louis isn't putting out. Santiago isn't talking about the murder, he's talking about how much of a sexual deviant Louis is the second he is introduced. The show is telling us what's important to the case, and what language hurt and stuck out to Louis the most. The deciding factor in the eyes of the audience, the story that Sam and Santiago are trying to tell, is that the crime is heinous because Louis turned down Lestat.

The audience isn't mad about the murder, they're mad about Lestat's emotions, they're mad about the betrayal, and they are mad that Louis and Claudia didn't put up with things. The case built against the two of them isn't based on violence, it's based on white tears. Louis isn't called a monster for slitting Lestat's throat, the audience member calls him a monster for turning down Lestat's advances.

The show is clear that the trial isn't really about the murder, it is about Louis not "giving enough" for Lestat. It's about Louis asking Lestat to turn Claudia and literally bargaining his happiness where he literally gets on his knees and says "I'll be happy for you, I will never leave you if you do this for me". It's never been about the murder, it's quite literally just shaming Louis for not "loving a good man who might be abusive".

At the end of the day, the trial as framed and written by Sam is building a case off of Lestat's tears, not actual physical harm.

Like my skin is crawling but also the show is so chilling with how it portrayed the "He's a good man so hold your tongue and endure! Lest you read as ungrateful".

the idea of hannibal as loustat's marriage counselor is soooo funny bc on the surface he would have to agree with lestat's attempts to corrupt louis's nature and have him embrace murder and killing and consumption but on the other hand I strongly believe that hannibal would find lestat's general personality and shallow theatrics in incredibly poor taste and would feel obligated to kill and eat him despite agreeing with him completely

He would look you in the eyes and explain why he kicked the puppy. He would kick your puppy in front of you. He would kick all of the puppies if it benefitted him.

Then there were also elements that I found kind of surprising and shocking, the whole ‘come to me’ sequence that happens right at the beginning and I really couldn’t quite work out why we were doing it like this. And it does feel like a horrifically mean trick for Lestat to come out and say that thing. [...] I mean it’s quite clearly scripted because of the way the language is written and I think this is when it comes down to that little negotiation because one of Lestat’s big MOs is that he is a monster, an unlovable monster. And he kind of oscillates between loving that side of himself and hating that side of himself. I think there was this element when he says I, a vampire, was being hunted, I was being loved, he loved me. I showed him for who I was and he loved me. I think that probably is an amendment that Lestat put in because I think that meant something to him because if we take what we see in season 1 of the Louis transformation where Lestat does a really brutal act in front of Louis before saying I love you, and by the way I want to be your immortal companion, you know, let’s do it, but this is who I am. [...] So I think that was an amendment that Lestat put in. But the ‘come to me, he was calling me calling me calling me, come to me come to me come to me…’ I don’t know, it feels very complex and Jacob and I spoke about it quite a lot and I think we came to an understanding between the two of us that there was a mutual yearning for each other. [...] So I think it’s very vampiric language whether Louis was saying “come to me” or whether Lestat could just feel that he wanted him to come to him. And I think it’s very shocking for Lestat in that moment to be smacked in the face with ‘I didn’t want you. I always hated you.' Then he responds, then his vicious side spikes up.

sorry but do you ever think about the fact that the bernard we have today is a direct amalgamation of everything that happened in his past and i know that sound like such an obvious statement to say but it actually kills me to know that you can draw a direct line from who he is today all the way back to that sixteen year old boy who watched his best friend bleed out. like it is the defining moment in his life. it fundamentally shaped who he is and the person he's become. he is the bernard we know and love not despite the grieves shooting but because of it. because the gangs all got together and shot up his school. because tim walked out of that room with nothing but a baseball bat. because his darla got shot. because he watched her gasp and cry as she died. because he watched the blood coagulate around the wound. because he sat there and held her hand as her life drained out of her. because he walked into school that day with a joke he knew would make her laugh and her nose would scrunch up and she'd snort a little and tim would roll his eyes at him and call him ridiculous and instead he walked out with a bloody white shirt, blood under his fingernails, and two friends less. because, even now, almost half a decade out from the shooting, he thinks that if he closes his eyes, he will always be that stupid, scared little sixteen year old, holding the cooling body of dead best friend.
