Impressive in any medium she chooses, Walker is best known for her silhouettes, which draw us in with their familiarity in order to reveal to us centuries old systemic issues of race, gender and class warfare. While the classic silhouettes she references have historically been coded with romantic sentimentality, Walker creates from them a new path to challenge stereotypes and question authority. There are several fine books on her work; After The Deluge is a good start.
