Tonight I was in the mood for a deep, dark red wine. One of my favorites is one that I happen to sell on our site (www.topochines.com). This 2015 Crane Family Vineyards red blend is one of the best values in the entire Napa Valley. I recently read that the average Napa Cab is $75 a bottle. This Crane Family wine - “Alison’s Cuvée” - retails for $33.00. ————————————————— 48% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Malbec, 5% Petit Verdot. ————————————————— Aromas of blackberry jam, maple syrup and mocha. On the palate - blueberry, plum and cassis, and s hint of chocolate. Nice tannins, long finish. A very structured wine. ————————————————- #napavalley #napa #napawine #napawines #napawinery #winery #winelovers #vino #vinorosso #vinotinto #wine #winetasting #napavalleywine #napavalleycab #artisanwine #artisanwines #winesipping #almostfriday #winegirl https://www.instagram.com/p/BoPD54ABbju/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1bnn4dpflpn1h

From #montpellier South of France, this Enclos of @domainelaterrasse_ is not as typically aggressive and ordinarily intense as you’d expect from a 100% #mourvèdre (also known as #monastrell ) vin du Languedoc. You’ll raise your eyebrows after the first few sips! It’s very mild, silky and so juicy that you can drink it straight without the accompaniment of food. And that’s what we call a #finewine . #cepagedemediterranee #mediterraneanwine #herault #suddefrance #ipg #frenchwine #languedocwine #wineandfood #winelovers #hongkong #evercohol #artisanwine (at Hong Kong) https://www.instagram.com/p/BrhIHSnHtoL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=mi7vxldscfow

What speciality wine can teach us about Direct Trade: part 2 of our article on Raw Wine week  🍷🌍👊
Tumblr media
Another beautiful aspect of Raw Wine is the opportunity for direct trade with the producer: a chance to appreciate the personality and individuality of the winemaker and the wine.
Some producers no longer find it necessary to be classified under formal regional appellations such as AOP in France or the DOCa in Italy. Many wines at the show had the lowest classification available; some producers feel they do not need appellations and control bodies ‘hanging over’ their wines and imposing restrictions, when direct interaction with the buyer and an appreciation of individuality is possible (see endnote 1 below).
Now smaller vineyards and producers making high quality wine no longer need to see their produce sitting at the bottom of the heap. This emerging breed of winemakers are jack-of-all-trades, or to borrow a term from Nassem Taleb (see 2 below), ‘amazing generalists’: owners of the winery, farmers of the land, makers of the wine, and self-budding entrepreneurs whose efforts are being celebrated and often gain cult followings.
Just like the speciality coffee industry, small producers are now able to compete with bigger players at the top of the ladder who have had an industry monopoly for too long.  And this move away from standardised, normalised flavour is being rewarded.
One producer at the show who I felt had an exceptional wine had classified it at the lowest possible standard - a 'vino da tavola' or ‘table wine’. Not so much for the cost but for the restrictive rules, he said. His wine sells well due to an appreciation of its great flavour. And for the good price the consumer pays, he’s able to constantly refine and hone his craft to produce even better versions of his unique wine.
The appellations, though a celebration of speciality in themselves, can have the effect of restricting both consumer and producer from appreciating the diversity and artistry behind each wine.
Tumblr media
Koba is a dedicated promoter of a minimal intervention approach to wine-making & part of Naotari wines: producers of premium, unfiltered small batch wines using biodynamic agriculture.
Artadi, one of Riojas most prestigious wineries, controversially left the Rioja regulation body of DOC a few years ago, feeling that appellation rules did not allow wineries to celebrate unique soil characteristics, microclimates, grapes and the individual villages and vineyards by lumping all the wines under one appellation.
The taste experts, master consultants and well-paid oenologists that have dictated wine production standards (and as a result taste), have in my opinion restricted the development of new markets and new ways of dining.
Direct interaction and freedom of production allows new markets to develop and creativity to flourish ad infinitum. The intimacy of a direct relationship allows for greater accountability on both ends of the value chain. It rewards care, diversity and most importantly allows new ideas to develop, new flavours to be appreciated and new routes to market to open.
Much like the various styles of coffee that have emerged to enjoy commercial success; much like the different styles of chocolate now appreciated in a once too-sweet, milk-chocolate-loving world; artisan wines with diverse grapes varieties and experimental methods open up a world of new and unique wines and food pairings that have been long overlooked – but more on that in a future post!
Notes:
1.     Very much like the restrictions experienced in the coffee, chocolate and tea markets and the food industry in general, where native and indigenous varieties of food are now being celebrated, popularised and in many cases paid a premium for.
2.     Philosopher Nassim Taleb argues that people who are good at many different things offer more creativity, productivity and a wider perspective than those who are ‘limited’ in their specialist views. In his book Anti Fragile, Taleb challenges the notion of ‘comparative advantage’ – the economic idea that by specialising in one thing, everybody gets better goods at cheaper prices in that ‘theoretical’ world.
