The art is based on a scene from my fic, Piecing Ourselves Together, where, after being separated for 4 years (due to a whole kidnapping thing by Area 49B), Blinky and Barbara reunite and Blinky meets his son, Arthur, for the first time.

22 September 2022 - Simply consumed by the idea of the Amphibia AU again and dug up + expanded on the notes I wrote for it:

Main Plot

Jim Lake Jr., Toby Domzalski, and Claire Nuñez are childhood best friends growing up in Arcadia Oaks. On Jim’s 16th birthday, they get magically transported to the land of Amphibia, where they are separated upon their arrival.

Jim ends up living with the frogs. He's taken under the care of Blinky and Aaarrrgghh (husbands) after Aaarrrgghh convinces a distrustful Blinky. We follow Jim, Blinky, and Aaarrgghh as they get to know each other and Jim adjusts to Amphibia. He wants to find a way home, and his new dads are trying to help him.

Amphibia

For my sanity, the magical characters are translated into frogs/toads/newts. They all live in the same Amphibia with the same sort of rules and lore. We’re just inserting characters into the story and redesigning them to fit into Amphibia. I’m also not calling them “good” or “bad” trolls because as the shows…show, people are complex and have potential to do good. Changelings also will make things a bit more complicated, but we’re going to make this work.

The trolls are translated over to the frogs. I find that they have a lot of similarities to the frogs in the early season. Market, trying to survive, eclectic frogs, suspicious of humans.

Blinky and Aaarrrgghh are husbands because I said so. Blinky runs a used bookshop and Aaarrrgghh is a farmer. Blinky has been trying to write a book about the history of Amphibia for years (and the town thinks he's chasing a pipe dream). He actually used to travel a lot with his brother who helped him research, but there was a falling out and his brother went missing. Aaarrrgghh is happily farming and selling produce in town, but frogs don't always trust him. There are rumors he used to work with the Gumm Gumm toads.

The Gumm Gumms are translated over to the toads. The relationship between toads and frogs is something of what I'd imagine it'd be like if the Gumm Gumms had taken over the other trolls. Plus, I think the strength and power of the Gumm Gumms matches the toads best.

I was debating between Akiridions and wizards for the newts. I decided wizards would fit the vibes of Newtopia best. It's like Camelot in a way, when you think about it. Plus, Arthur as Andrias is something I can't pass up because would you look at their character designs compared to the other characters? Big.

As for the Akiridions, I think they'll fit as some of the early inhabitants of Amphibia and be the ones to build the very advanced technology. My favorite part about Amphibia is the clash between technology and nature, and I think it'd be fascinating to explore with the Akiridions.

The Humans

Jim is an awkward guy who doesn't know exactly what he wants to do with his life yet. At home, he runs his family's restaurant. It's grown difficult since his father left (he was the chef of family), and his mom really isn't great at cooking, so it's mostly Jim running it. When he crash lands in Amphibia, he is terrified and confused, and he encounters a big scary...frog? This frog happens to be Aaarrrgghh, and he leads Jim to Wartwood and introduces him to his husband, Blinky. It takes some time to get used to Amphibia (Jim gets to try learning how to cook with bugs!), but he finds it to feel like another home. He gets the blue gem (for heart).

Toby will throw hands with anyone who messes with his friends. It's a bit of a problem. Here is where we get to see more of punk rock Toby because I said so. When he crash lands in Amphibia, he is also terrified and confused. He nearly falls down a hill. But he says, "Fuck it," grabs a big stick and bashes it at the first moving thing he sees...which ends up being not a thing, but a toad. Toby smacks Bular the Butcher with a big stick and gets thrown in Toad Tower jail. But Toby is also a showman, and begins to help Bular gain the favor of restless toads. Toby is determined to find his way and find his friends so they can get back home (Tobes is also not vibing with bug food). He gets the pink gem (for strength).

Claire is smart, pretty, and a brilliant actress, and she has a good left. Though she has a strained relationship with her family - being the "perfect" daughter of the councilwoman is rough - she loves her friends fiercely. When she crash lands in Amphibia, she ends up on the steps of the palace in Newtopia. As she's exploring, fascinated by this fantastical world, she runs into Douxie the newt on the streets. Douxie is the first to actually do something about Claire as Hisirdoux, Scourge of the Sand Wars, Defeater of Ragnar the Wretched, the youngest newt ever to achieve the rank of general in the great Newtopian Army- Claire cuts him off before he continues. Douxie insists on taking Claire to see his boss. They go on the hunt for Merlin, but end up finding him with Arthur in the throne room. Arthur decides to let Claire stick around to get back on her feet. Meanwhile, Claire conducts research and explores. Everyone really likes her, and she acclimates really quickly, making Newtopia her new home. It's not like she had much of a home in the first place...She gets the green gem (for wisdom).

Overall review of wizards. Spoiler warning. This is just my opinion. If you enjoyed it, I’m happy for you. I think it was far too rushed.

Five episodes in we finally started to get introduced to interesting characters. But the pace never slowed down long enough to understand their role, their personalities, purpose, etc. It was a quick flash of ‘Oh that’s cool-and they’re gone...but I wanted to see more and understand...’ The quick glimpse of Angor Rot (my boy 😭) Why did he fish Morgana from the river? He hates humans...I’m confused??? He has magic. Did he learn from the evil magic squad?

The graphics are incredible. It looks amazing but I feel like for me to have a connection to this part of the story it had to have been longer. Another ten episodes of us getting to know Douxie in Arcadia would’ve been nice. When you dump as much information and new things on viewers it’s just too much for us to handle. I was so distracted by going “the heck is happening” to ever bond with Douxie. This makes me sad because I was enamored with him in Trollhunters. Also, he went from super suave bad boy to derpy bard boy. Not necessarily bad...but personally, I enjoyed his confidence in Trollhunters. Straight up hit a gum gum with a guitar. Not a magic one...just a regular guitar. Chad move. But this...felt weird. I personally think it would’ve been a much better plot twist had he been Mordred. Would’ve given him a darker edge, a vendetta, an interesting character arc. His goal to be to avenge his mother Morgana and kill Merlin/Trollhunters. Instead we find out that he’s basically a edgy, awkward bard. Which isn’t bad but not enough character development for me to be excited about any apparent growth or newly discovered powers.

Steve Palchuk (while I love his character) was unnecessary to this plot. I would’ve preferred Eli. His brains would have been helpful and I think his comedic relief would’ve fit better than Steves. Steve’s jokes just didn’t seem to land. The comedy relief was not timed right. Again, I absolutely loved Trollhunters and 3 Below...but there was never a moment to stop and catch your breath to know the world and characters which made it difficult to enjoy.

I still don’t fully understand how magic works. Douxie taught Claire for a minute and that was it and now he’s her teacher? Morgana and Merlin walk to the other side and say that sorcery dies with them but Claire and Douxie are left. Magic is...emotion? Kinda? Idk they never explained. 🤷‍♀️

Arthur’s character was...confusing to say the least. He misses his love and hates “dark” creatures because they killed her. But he comes back from the dead...to atone for his sins...by being evil? That didn’t make sense to me. Same with Morgana coming back and him being like sup sis! Know I tried to kill you but we are blood family! His super quick switch to asking for trolls help and loving his sister again was unexplained and made 0 sense. Just make him a dislikeable character and leave it at that. Sometimes it’s better to keep things simple. Over complicated plots can be messy and unenjoyable.

Morgana going from villain to hero was expected but executed poorly. She would flip like a switch and I just couldn’t sympathize with her as much as I did when she was a villain. I enjoyed her passion while being dark. Her redemption arc could’ve been handled so much better. Her having a romantic thing with Merlin and Merlin betraying her becoming the true villain while she is thirsty for revenge would’ve been top tier world building. We got butt jokes from Steve instead.

Strickler and Nomura. I want to see them. Especially back then? Oh they would be so evil and dark and I LIVE FOR IT. Especially since we love them now. It’d be cool to be reminded of their past. Back to the Jim smelling of human without being a changeling. Could’ve seen more on that and an interaction with him. They’d be fascinated I’m sure. Morgana created changelings but that could’ve easily been explained that she was working behind Arthur’s back the whole time. Working with Gunmar and creating changelings to infiltrate the castle while pretending to be submissive in court to Arthur and Merlin. It would explain why Changelings value cunning even more so and it would’ve been more believable than her talking to Claire one time and saying “yes! I’ll just tell my bro he crazy and needs to stop! Thank you kindly foreign hand maiden with dark magic!” Like there’s no reason for Morgana to trust her. Use her...sure. She would want Claire power, but Morgana’s character was far too rushed to make sense. I miss it when she was just a villain.

Also...Jim gets stabbed by a blade and they don’t call his mom? They don’t let her know her son could be dying? She’s a doctor. She doesn’t know much about the dark Magicks but she’s so smart and Strickler is her boyfriend. She should’ve been told. She should’ve shown up. I love her character and she adds a lot to the dynamic. Steve was the focal point far too often.

Bular. (Inhaled deeply). I missed him so much. It was cool to see Gunmar and Bular again. Bular I feel could’ve been interesting to build more too and I’m grateful for what we received. He obviously was more impressionable than his father. Morgana saved him and he immediately vouched for her while touching his fathers shoulder saying softly “she spared my life.” Like...Bular is an excellent character because even when fighting Jim in his final moments, Jim talks to him about dad issues and you can see Bular think about it and ultimately decide his fate. Just...ugh yes I missed the angry tall charcoal man.

Confusing part though...Gunmar and Bular declare that forest their own. Jim and Deya are there and watch as they scare off Arthur. You’re telling me they just let them go??? When they’re trying to recruit trolls for the war? They just go welp...see ya. Nah. There should’ve been dialogue there. The strange troll that smells of human but isn’t an impure. Cue the changelings. Could’ve been an awesome Segway into the life of the gum gums because honestly...Arthur was a douche and I sided with the Gum gums. Like yeah they eat people but Arthur was so...weird and uncomfortable to watch that I’d rather see the Gum gums who make no qualms over what they want or who they are.

The...giant dragon that’s the familiars dad. No reason for him at all. An attempt at a quirky dad character that landed flat. He went from oh lemme get you a cup of tea to DONT ChALlenge Me BoY I KnOw KaRAte!!! And I was like...ummmmm excuse me??? And then he went on to give a lesson on grief and show pictures of his son and I was like Soooooo we aren’t burning Douxie to a crisp? We are just going to throw in a quick ill timed lesson on grief?

The fight between Krel, Claire and the gang vs evil Jack Frost, eye ball raven, and evil Arthur electric boogaloo. Instead of showing the fight they did a recap. That fight would’ve been so awesome to watch and instead we got a recap of them getting their booties kicked. It’s an effective time saver but lazy story telling.

The fawn earth bender woman is important because she was part of the secret magic club and decided she didn’t want to kill people anymore...or something. As if her club ever lied to her about what they were about to do. Like Oh we are killing people? I thought you were joking for millions of years.

They all need her back to do...something evil that I can’t remember which I assume the movie will be about. I want more lore on evil Jack Frost and eyeball raven. They just were like “Congrats Morgana! We are the cool super old magic squad. We are the dopest thing in this show and we won’t say anything about ourselves besides a vague description in under 3 secs that leave our viewers confused and disappointed because they want more.”

Like seriously. They were the best part. Their intro was on a flying castle and I kinda hate that their intro was Merlin yelling “Oh no! Them!” Like we are supposed to know what and who they are. Build up is so important for an aundieces understanding. Like who they are? What they want? What they are? I spent the first half of the show mostly confused and the last half moderately confused and bewildered.

In conclusion, not my fave. It lacked the charm and quirkiness of 3 below and the depth and character development of Trollhunters to deliver a mediocre segway to a film. I really want this film to do well...but they will be on a time crunch and I was not impressed with how they handled this one in ten episodes. Fingers crossed the movie does better.

To end the night, here’s some doodles of Reya and Arthur I did while watching TV earlier

Tho it’s very, very far off in Pieces’s plot, I do intend for them to meet and become friends.  I won’t expand too much on that, but I will say they get off to a bumpy start.  Reya assumes that Arthur, being a half-troll like herself, had a similar upbringing and connects more with his trollish side like she does.  When, in reality, being raised by his human mother and surrounding by other humans in Area 49B has left Arthur rather disconnected from his troll side.

Trollhunters Roleswap AU (Never Enough)

Draal Kanjigarrson, has his entire world turned upside down when he and his friends Arthur Kruuberia and Blinkous Galadrigal are swept into a world full of magic, unknown underground worlds, peculiar happenings, and most importantly, trolls.

Multiple Amulet AU/Una Fortes Sumus

“Its Trollhunters, not Trollhunter”. AU in which Merlin was just slightly smarter, and created not only the Amulet of Daylight, but also a series of other celestial amulets, granted to the closest allies of the Trollhunter to act as their companions not only in life, but also in battle.

Follows nearly the same story as canon, with added antics from the fact Blinky and Aaarrrgghh both are troll warriors and having to teach Jim the secrets of the Companion amulets

Blinky on Broadway

In the wake of a truly decimating battle between human and troll kind, an era of peace is brought about, with a serum being developed that allows trollkind to step and walk in Daylight. An alliance is formed, with Merlin’s Trollhunter at the head of it.

On the other side of the coin, a successful stage singer, Blinky Galadrigal, is making his homecoming for the Festival of the Sun, a weeklong celebration to honor the 200 year alliance. However, things take a turn for the worst when current Trollhunter Kanjigar is critically injured, forcing intern Jim Lake Jr. to take his place, and become the lead of the criminal investigation. Alongside best friend Toby, theater enthusiat Claire, and his adopted older brother Draal, they begin a search that leads them directly to none other than Blinky himself.

(Incorporates elements of Blinky and the cast in numerous musicals, most noteably Finding Neverland)

Tribeswap

Jim Lake and his pal Toby are only 5 years old, when both Barbara Lake and Nana Domzalski mysteriously vanish from their homes. In panic, the boys run out into the forest where they are found and adopted by Pannoxi strategy historian Arrrghaumont and his Krubera husband Blink. Although hesitant at first, Trollmarket eventually warms up to the human boys, who are raised in the world of trolls, but still attend human school with the promise that they won’t say anything. However, things were bound to change when the Deya, mother of their good friend Bular turns to stone, and a classmate shows up with the amulet one day.

Ghosthunters/BFU

Toby, an avid believer in ghosts, his skeptic friend Jim and cameraperson Claire only wanted to hunt ghosts for the internet. Instead, what they find (much to Jim’s disbelief) is that not only are ghosts and demons real, but they happen to look an awful lot like trolls- particulary ghosts that need their help. But why can’t they just focus on their internet show?

Mermaid AU

Not much to this one, other than that everyone’s a mermaid ;;;) Pulls a bit from the Little Mermaid, but still follows the Trollhunters plot. Blink’s an octoperson, Aaarrrgghh’s a leopard seal. 

Marching Band/Mafia AU || Heartbeats (tag is #trollhuters marching band AU and #mb heartbeats)

Marching Band AU created by @/the-anon-ghost that I helped work :D Little bit of band little bit of mafia plot behind the scenes, follows Jim as he and Toby are required to join a fall sport, and because of Claire, a drumline member (and Jim’s crush) they end up auditioning and ending up in the marching band- Toby trumpet and Jim in color guard.

In the background, the return of the infamous GummGumm gang, thought to have disbanded following a war between them and spy Deya that led to their leader Gunmar being thrown in jail. Jim, Toby and Claire find themselves caught in the middle of it all, starting to realize that maybe the people running the band aren’t everything they seem…

[ Heartbeats is a series of interludes I wrote that follow Blinky and Aaarrrgghh through their high school and college marching band days, and yes do give a little insight onto the role of the GummGumms in that era :3 ]

Heart of Gold AU (TW body horror/crystal gore)

AU where Blinky gets corrupted by the crystalline core after being severely injured in battle and falls off a cliff (losing pretty much all his limbs) and no one can find him (so they assume he’s gone forever)

But he ends up alive somehow in this cave where he starts experimenting with dark magic and is able to generate crystal limbs from the emotional magic/force in his geode heart (so its like an extension of his heart) The energy that created the arms in the first place is pretty much drawing emotional energy from his heart, meaning that anytime he draws energy from himself, the weaker his entire soul gets

Dear Jim Lake Jr. (currently discontinued)

Follows the plot of the musical Dear Evan Hansen, where Jim’s lie about a boy he hasn’t talked to since they were very young turns into a mess that cannot be solved. Added epilogue in which Toby wakes up from his coma and turns to Johanna Beck and Blink Kleinman to help him in reinventing himself and getting forgiveness from his sister Claire.

Blinky and the Beast

Blinky, tired of his life, longs for a new adventure, which he ends up finding when he goes out to search for his missing brother and finds himself in a castle inhabited by the most peculiar of trolls. (Follows the BaTB plot, still can’t decide if they’re human or troll in this)

The Greatest Showman

Another excuse to put Trollhunters characters in musicals- Blinky’s Barnum, Aaarrrgghh’s Charity, and Jim is Philip. Mostly so that I could draw Blinky and Aaarrrgghh with A Million Dreams. 

Hamilton AU (In Development)

Not really an AU yet, but Aaarrrgghh’s Hamilton and Blinky’s Eliza and this was pretty much just an excuse to use Helpless for Troll Dads. Thinking Jim is Philip, Kanjigar is Washington and that’s about as far as I got with this one 

Art of Corruption, aka the crack/Edgy AUs that gets really confusing w/o the Worldbuilding

Main AOC Timeline

It all started with one deal. All Blinky wanted to do was bring back the love of his life. He had never expected that it would lead to Draal and Toby being kidnapped by the FBI, finding out Toby had a father in Scotland, learning the Void to be a lot more chaotic than it appears to be, Jim to become power hungry for power stones, or even to become a powerhungry troll himself. But, corruption isn’t something that just goes away. It stays. It stays, and changes everyone forever.

Elementary School

Alternate timeline/backstory of the AOC in which Gunmar redeems himself just a little sooner, and is given a classroom in the prestigious Nurel school. Blinky’s mischevious brother Dictatious who had left school years ago (because, well he’s that smart) decides that instead of submitting his application to the Nurel classes at the request of their wealthy parents, but rather to the GummGumm class. While in the GummGumm class, where he meets fellow whelps Aaarrrgghh, Draal (who isn’t supposed to be there, but is anyway), Bular, Nomura and Stricklander, Blinky not only learns what it means to let loose a little, but also that friends can be found in the most unlikely of places.

Symphonic Band

With the GummGumm class now a little older, the friendships made start to drift apart as they make it to high school, where they all participate in the band. While there, Blinky is made assistant director/drum major (recieving help from alumni Vendel) and struggles with both a years long crush on bari sax player Aaarrrgghh, and having to conduct an original composition at the International Wind Band Festival later that year.

 With the death of Arthur Pendragon came the fall of Camelot. It had been with the completion of the Eclipse armour that the Trollhunters fell to shambles. Esmerion must fight to keep Jim alive, but that grows difficult when his own sanity is against him. He wants the boy and his friends safe, and yet a siren sings to him from across the water. Whether Freya is calling him from the depths or his mind is toying with him, he does not know. Everything is at stake and deception is a common hand of cards in this dangerous game. Simple words cannot solve this riddle and secrets shall be spilt if he does not tread carefully.
