Holy… WHAT?! How was that bombshell just dropped in the epilogue like it was nothing!!!

This book had me hating each of the main characters! I seriously wished bad for all their endings, haha. But just as I was getting super annoyed with one character, I actually started to feel for them. And then just when you think that one nice character is making a bad judgment call, you realize it was all intentional!! And though another character wasn’t good, but wasn’t totally bad, it turns out they’re just as bad as the other character! I’m sorry that’s confusing, but I can’t spoil it!!!

This was such an intense ride and though you think you’ll have it all figured out, I assure you, you won’t. Hence the bombshell in that epilogue.

* Who the fuck is burying a body?!

* Wow. Eve’s husband, Nate, is really just… even-tempered. I don’t trust him already. You’re married to Eve for 8 YEARS and you kiss her three times a day and fuck only once a month? You’re sketch, dude.

* Oohhhh, Addie. What did you do? Inquiring minds want to know.

* Enter mean girl Kenzie. Yeah, I’d have picked up her bag and flung it down the stairs. Fuck that petty bs.

* Oohhh. So Addie accused Arthur Tuttle, a teacher, of something and made him resign..? And Eve is totally in Arthur’s corner and disliked Addie because “Arthur is a nice man” 🤔

* Wait… so wtf happened? They’re alluding that Addie accused Mr. Tuttle of something but she’s saying she didn’t..?

* Her husband is being hit on by the new, young hot teacher? And he’s not dissuading anything? He’s totally cheating. Maybe not with the new teacher, but with someone.

* Oh lord. Addie said she didn’t care if Mr. Bennett was hot and now she’s smitten because he likes Edgar Allen Poe and he WINKED at her. This is gonna be a rollercoaster.

* Did Eve really try to steal some shoes? What a dumbass. I hope she gets caught, but I have a feeling she’ll get away with it.

* So the best friend Hudson isn’t speaking to Addie anymore..? They led us to believe it’s because whatever they think she accused the teacher of, but it’s not..? And Addie’s mom can never know..? I have so many questions.

* Oh so the rumor is that Mr. Tuttle was in a relationship with a student… and all signs pointed to Addie. But she’s saying it was never like that..? THE WHAT WAS IT LIKE?!

I gave him top scars since I headcanon him to be ftm, unfortunately I could NOT give him his blind eye as seen in my art piece I draw of him as a human

Primrose Obviously base on the human design I have for her, couldn't give her a hoodie with a heart zipper or white undershirt, but was able to make her skin slightly tan and gave her freckles on her face. Also, I couldn't make Primrose flat-chested.. either I'm too dumb to know how or sims 4 does not have an option for that :/

Xavion Based on my much older human design for him, I was able to give his eye justice thanks to a CC, but I could not give him one piercing on his ear lope. I try to make his skin as pale as possible but that's how pale as it could go.

Zayden I don't really have anything to say, it's just Zayden

Mr. Z/Zero I do not have a human design for him but I like to imagine this is what he would probably look like, literally just Zayden with a beard.

Kenzie Unfortunately, I cannot give her her electricity scars that I headcanon her to have or give her the exact same outfit that she has in my human design.. so this is the best I could do for my favorite girl ;-;

uno. Oriunda de Manchester e hija única de un novelista cuyo género favorito era el thriller policial, Kenzie creció con Arthur Poirot y Sherlock Holmes como buenos amigos cuyas historias le eran narradas como cuentos para dormir, además de los protagonistas en historias que su padre escribía, por más que en un principio podía no entenderlas demasiado. Le facinaban, eso sí. De ahí heredó su profundo interés por el crimen (o la resolución del mismo, para ser exactos). La Escuela de Detectives Sinclaire & Thorne siempre estuvo en su horizonte y lo trazó como objetivo principal en plan de vida desde que supo de su existencia, el dedicarse unos años como azafata no fue más que una herramienta para adquirir herramientas (y dinero).

SPELLBOUND is set in the 1920s United States during Prohibition (with the addition of magic), which means that alcohol features pretty heavily in the novel. Prohibition was a real period in U.S. history when alcohol was illegal, which in practice meant that everyone who drank did so covertly and generally with drinks of less quality. Many people still drank, especially the rich. Enter Arthur, the son of a congressman with progressive policies in a sea of xenophobia and racism. The bit about his father's politics seems means as a shorthand for why Arthur's personal character is so good. It's ultimately immaterial (at least in this first book), since a narrative about how he's accepting when his family is intolerant would have just as much of an impact on the story. His best friend is a Black woman, and he doesn't care that Rory is Italian, the son of an immigrant. 

There are a few deliberate aspects of the characterization which are so blatant as to be either an instant turn-off or the reason someone might want to read this book. The first is the age gap between the two main characters. The dynamic between them is built on Arthur, the older, rich man, wanting to help Rory, the younger and quite poor man, whether or not he wants the assistance. The first place that this shows up is when they go to a speakeasy, and (lying that's he's twenty-six when he's actually twenty) Rory has his first drink of alcohol, and then several more. Arthur (in his late twenties) helps the drunken Rory to a safe place to sleep it off. Arthur seems to not understand the effect that his position and money has on Rory. He definitely thinks that he isn't being coercive when he tells Rory that he will cancel a particular debt if Rory does what he wants, but Rory feels very manipulated by this and like he doesn't have a choice. Arthur seems to think that it's all fine and not actually manipulative because he paid the debt before he knew whether Rory would do what he asked.

January Book Reviews: Wonderstruck by Allie Therin

Book three of three, probably unwise to start here. Psychic Rory Brodigan is still tied to an ancient, powerful relic he can hardly control-- which is not comforting for his lover, Arthur Kenzie. They find a new lead on a possible way to destroy the artifact-- but it involves travelling to the Paris World Fair, closer to the sinister Baron, and into a possible trap.

I think the romance was critical to maintaining the tension in this series. And it was, unfortunately, mostly resolved in book one and two, leaving the middling fantasy adventure plotline to carry the plot. The inevitable defeat of the villain was also a bit anticlimatic.

A fun and fluffy series overall, like A Marvellous Light but a step or two down in quality.
