OUTSIDER POV: ARTHIT EDITION

I love imagining SOTUS from the perspective of Arthit’s classmates who watched him go from shy kid

to head hazer

to doting, petulant kitten

within four years.

And that's not even getting into what he becomes after he graduates.

Like, my favorite narrative argument to make is that Arthit is actually the protagonist of SOTUS because he's the one who has the most to learn, it's always his issues that cause the conflict, and he's the one who changes the most throughout the course of the story.

His character arc is Shy Boy to Smitten Fiancé and I love that for me.

I basically binge watched the SOTUS series for the first time today and coincidentally Thailand passed the marriage equality laws at the same time! Such timing when watching the first GMMTV BL made and one of Thailands first BLs.

I actually really liked it more than I thought I would. I loved Kongbpob's flirting lines!! It always came out of nowhere and I basically had the same expression as P'Arthit (which was bewildered blushing haha) every time. I liked how their relationship developed and how even the confident Kongpob was scared of being honest when confronted about his feelings. It felt realistic and raw - less polished than the BL's we see these days so more freedom to explore as it was a pioneer of sort. The setting was also so nostalgic as I was also in university in 2016 so it brought back so many memories.

I wanted to write in defense about what Kongpob says to M when he asked regarding if he liked boys. He replied that he didn't like boys but he liked P'Arthit because it was P'Arthit. Now I haven't watched SOTUS S or the Our Skyy episodes so I am not sure about Kongpob's attraction/relationship history but it seemed like to me he said that as it was his first actual attraction to someone/guy.

So if that was the first time he liked someone/guy and if he is demisexual/demiromantic then that might make so much sense for him to say that. This is coming from someone who basically said the same thing when I liked someone for the first time (basically around the same time as kongpob) - who just happened to be a girl. I genuinely didn't understand it back then as I had never experienced physical/romantic attraction to anyone regardless of gender before this. I think when you first experience that kind of attraction quite strongly you think that it is only applicable in regards to that person. But my dumbass realised a few years after that, if you liked her then you can/do like girls (it was such a whole different awakening).

But I get where he was coming from. There was a point in time where she asked me and our other friend (who was also a girl) if we would ever like each other if our genders were different. At that time I had already realised that I was in love with her and after thinking about what she said I realised that I would've loved her the same if she was a guy too. This was what cemented the notion that I liked her and not that I liked girls in general at that time (as I couldn't imagining liking anyone else even if their gender had changed). So that was a blast from the past when I saw Kongpob mentioned that to say the least.

I do however like that we have of moved past that kind of declarations as the norm for someone experiencing first time attraction to the same sex. Maybe it will be nice to still have that kind of thinking when it is appropriate for that character as it is so raw but then have that character go through similar realisations that I did to understand otherwise. Basically make the characters a bit more flawed, inexperienced not fully knowledgeable in all aspects of the LGBTQ+ world so that the audience can go on that journey of realisation through the character too. I know I would've benefited from it back then for sure.

My thoughts during my rewatch of SOTUS S:

THERE ARE SIX KONGART KISSES

And what always gets me about them is that Arthit initiated half of them. 1) Their first kiss, 2) the last kiss in SOTUS S, and 3) the last kiss in Our Skyy. Kongphob only initiated two: 1) the beach kiss and 2) the lamppost kiss that shattered hearts and ruined lives. The roof kiss was technically mutual.

Right after I first devoured watched SOTUS, I saw all these people criticizing Arthit’s character for various reasons. All of them objectively wrong, of course, because he’s a paragon of perfection who’s never done anything wrong in his entire life. But the wildest takes were people convinced that Arthit doesn’t love Kongphob as much as Kongphob loves him.

Like. Arthit kissed Kongphob first. He was freaking himself out about whether or not they could have children before they started dating. He told his entire friend group and everyone else at that party that they were dating. He gave Kongphob more permanent, symbolic matching bracelets to replace the string that absolutely would have broken. He finished his thesis early so he could spend Valentine’s Day with Kongphob. (And he gave him roses that Kongphob kept for years afterward!!!) He cycled Kongphob around campus. He gave him a piggyback ride when Kongphob twisted his ankle. He held Kongphob’s pinky in the elevator of his workplace despite his very understandable concerns about being openly queer at work because Kongphob was sick and he was worried. He told his entire company they were dating after they were outed. He cried THREE TIMES (THAT WE SAW) because Kongphob was going to be out of arm’s reach for two years and might catch a cold in China. He was waiting at the airport when Kongphob came home to him.

Arthit is down so bad, but I genuinely think people miss it because Kongphob is so much more overt by comparison.

But like. In the novel, Arthit soldered their gears together HIMSELF. This bitch is just as extra and feverishly in love, and he deserves more acclaim for being as feral as his fiancé.

Recently I read a post about Krist and Singto reunion and how you can sum up all this new era of Thai BL through their series "SOTUS". This series had such a great impact that it explains why the genre is where it is now. I'm kinda new in Thai BL and I never bothered to watch it. There are so many options nowadays so I never took the time to see what was about "SOTUS". However, that post made such an impact on me, that I decided to start it now. It may be late, but I want to see what is this story and why it is considered such a "classic".

Random Thoughts about SOTUS episode 1:

▪️ I'm always amazed by all this big gathering of freshman in Thai series or any other series to be honest. My country don't do this thing. During all my college life, I barely knew people I was in class with. I feel this big gathering must be great to feel like you're part of the school. Anyway, it had a very solemn vibe in the series, especially when the third years students arrived.

▪️ From the first minutes, you get who are the main characters. Arthit Rojnapat who is played by Krist appears to be the very domineering senior who seems to get off when he can intimidate his juniors. It's my only guess because his requests were really too much. Who can get 1000 signatures in only one week or know in this short time how many people are in their year?! I tried imagining being in the same situation and my anxiety would never let me get away with it. The other main is Kongpob Suthiluck, usually called Kong, the junior who won't cow down to him and who will even challenge him. Saying they didn't get off a good start would be an euphemism.

▪️ It was so weird to see Krist being this annoying senior. Last role, I saw him was as Kawi in "Be My Favorite" and Hunter in "The Jungle". They weren't good guys too, but they more lovable. I had trouble accepting the change, at first. I'm sure we'll see some change after some episodes. However, I have to admit, I enjoyed very much the verbal jousting between his character and Kong. Every time, they were in the same room, it was like something was cackling in the air. The energy was off the chart.

▪️ Kong gave a total different impression. He is nice (he gave his shirt to another classmate when he couldn't get his size), brave (he didn't hesitate to shout in front of a large crowd that he likes men and asked ten of his schoolmates if they wanted to date him, even if it was a dare) and a good friend to have around (He helped M to get all the signature because M is too shy). He never really bends to anyone. He has done all the tasks Arthit threw at him, but it always felt like Kong was the one who had the upper hand, which was something Arthit found hard to swallow. I believe he never met his match before. He can be fierce, so it seems no other students before Kong found the courage to answer him back. Kong stands out from others. At the moment, this is only annoying for Arthit, but I guess it may lead to something else later.

▪️ We also get a few introduction to other characters but as for now they remain more like backgrounds characters. I think we'll learn more about them later in the series. It's so weird to see all these actors I saw in other series because they look so young here. You can see that 8 years have passed. Everyone has changed so much.

Anyway, I didn't think I would enjoy this first episode as much as I did. I thought it would show its age, but I didn't really feel it. It was a nice start and I really want to see the next episode.
