super novos! i am putting the final touches on my thesis project and it has occurred to me that my CHIRON album does not have artwork yet want to try your hand at something? Chiron is a centaur in Greek mythology known as the "wounded healer" (Google for more info and pics) // my Chiron character is genderfluid so ideally i don't want them to look like some ripped cis dude // lets switch it up a bit are you interested? message me and i can send you more details although i do not plan on selling this particular version of the album (it will be a free-release intended solely for the New College community), i still want to compensate you for your time. hit me up and we will work out a deal :) i guess the final catch (as implied in the subject line) is that i need this ASAP... ideally before Thursday so if you have some extra time on your hands and want to make some cool art for this project, please let me know because i'd love to work with you! Junot Diaz and Drown
Essentially, Drown prompts readers to examine immigration and its effects in a new light.
“I picked this one family, very much based on my own, this family of immigrants, a family that has to deal with all the kind of standard kookiness of immigration but also that is coming at it from a very different perspective, and I thought that was an important part of this book, that these are folks who come from another place but are in a world, are in a setting, where they are plunged deeply and immediately into what we would call America.” -Junot Diaz, (interview with Tell Me More, NPR)

“Well, that could be part of it. For me, not translating the words was more about like just this deep faith that readers who are really curious are going to reach out to other people. You know, in some ways I leave stuff un-translated not as a way to vex my audience but as a way to just, you know, it gives people things to do, man. It sort of encourages folks to like reach out and to do a little of their own research, to talk to friends, man. A book should be there to make you explore the world, not to like answer questions for you. There's plenty of folks out there who get paid to answer questions for you, from politicians on down.“I don't think the issue is about progress or that we're changing. I think that the issue is, is that these tendencies are deeply rooted in our community and that even though there's plenty of people who are not held by these tendencies, there's plenty of people who don't feel compelled to pursue these kind of craziness,. I think that these things are really present. And as a community I don't see that we've been having the kind of deep conversations that we need to have. You know? And I think eventually though the conversation will be had. There's only so long a silence can hold sway.” -Junot Diaz, (interview with Tell Me More, NPR)
Pictures from 1989 Dominican Republic --Yunior’s home before his immigration to the United States

Washington Heights -1985-- Ramon’s First Home After Arriving in New York

Life in the Bronx, 1980 (Similar to the environment that Yunior is entering upon immigration)

“No man. It's not that. It's just that it's, it's, you know, I mean one of the things that, again, I mean you don't want to push the point, but one of the things that literature does really well is to remind us of how two opposite things can coexist in one place very comfortably, that a person can be totally - and I use this word in quotes - purely English - and yet be nothing whatsoever of English. And I think that as someone who's an immigrant you find yourself in that situation, where you're like, you know, English is a lanage that I learned and it's become in some ways my absolute dominant language, and yet it is completely the alien language. It's not the language that feels organic to me. And I think trying to explain what that's like, that that's neither a problem nor as some would claim a super power, is part of what I think my last two books have been in part about. Because in the end how little we talk about race is only matched by how little we talk about the real lived experiences of immigrants in this country.” -Junot Diaz, (interview with Tell Me More, NPR)
Modern Art reflecting Immigration
"The arts helps you to define and capture specific moments of the struggle...It helps portray the human face of the migrant story and what the world could be. That's why it's so important." -Pablo Alvarado (as qtd in Stokely Baksh article, “4 Artists Who Are Reshaping America's Immigration Debate,” The Color Line)
Photography
Carlos Javier Ortiz
“It is not surprising that migrants often work in the most undesirable occupations...Yet these tasks remain essential, underpinning the basic fabric of the American economy and quality of life. All the while, undocumented immigrants live under the radar with meager wages and poor access to education, social services, and health care. Nonetheless, I have seen how they remain resilient and strive to be part of the American Dream.”
-“Phoenix , Arizona. USA 2013 - Fernando Lopez is a Day Laborer who used to work the fields. He now looks for work at the Home Depot. Mr Lopez supports his family in Mexico buy sending them half his pay check which.sometimes amounts to not thing. Almost all the day laborers in Arizona are Mexican workers.”
-“Kinston, North Carolina.September 2011. After clearing a field pickers take a break. Sweet potato pickers load trucks with potatoes as they pick through a field. The workers get paid for each bushel which earned them $.40 per bushel and a bushel weighs about 35 to 40 pounds. Workers earn about $48 to $60 per day after picking through a field. Some of the workers are as young as 18 and as old as 70.”

Musical Theater
Hamilton: An American Musical
Hamilton celebrates immigrants, acknowledges their work ethic, struggle to succeed, ultimately reminds the United States that immigrants have helped shapes their country
“That sidelining resonated with Miranda, himself the son of Puerto Rican immigrants, as an emblematic instance of the nation’s treatment of immigrants, both as individuals and as a collective part of the nation’s history. Those twin intuitions sparked a musical about historical, cultural and political inclusion, in which an almost entirely non-white cast plays the founding fathers (and a few of the mothers, although the cast is also overwhelmingly male). The result is the most unexpected of phenomena: a Broadway hit that is about political, economic and racial history while also offering an implicit but acidic running commentary on the racial and cultural politics of the US today.”-Sarah Churchwell, The Guardian

“Miranda creates a myth for Hamilton by celebrating him as a symbol of immigrant inclusiveness, egalitarianism and meritocracy: historically it’s a stretch, but theatrically it’s genius.” -Sarah Churchwell, The Guardian
youtube
“The idea has always been to look the way America looks now, and that doesn’t exclude anyone. So to have that recast as exclusionary language was disappointing.” -Lin Manuel Miranda, Interview with Rolling Stone, June 1, 2016
“How does a ragtag volunteer army in need of a shower
Somehow defeat a global superpower?
How do we emerge victorious from the quagmire?
Leave the battlefield waving Betsy Ross’ flag higher?
Yo. Turns out we have a secret weapon!
An immigrant you know and love who’s unafraid to step in!
He’s constantly confusin’, confoundin’ the British henchmen
Ev’ryone give it up for America’s favorite fighting Frenchman!” - “Guns and Ships”
“Many in the hip hop world were initially skeptical, but Hamilton has won over most. If anything it is the story of the founding fathers that is being appropriated, and rightly so, as newcomers and outsiders assert that this story belongs to them as much as to anyone.” -Philip Kasinitz, Contexts, October 5, 2017
----Comprehensively, the musical explores Alexander Hamilton’s struggle to succeed as an immigrant, and each song provides insight this experience as the audience observes the consuming nature of his "I can't fail mentality.”----

Jer Thorp -- “We Were Strangers Once Too,” New York City, February 2017 (Image Source: NBC New York)
--an art instillation in Times Square comprised of 33 poles, each reflecting the 2015 New York City the immigration statistics--

“The poles were painted in pink and red and the color blocks were positioned to form a heart when looked at head on, symbolizing the immigrants’ fundamental role to city life.” -Alexandra E. Petri,National Geographic, March 10, 2017

“A data expert, Thorp knew that he wanted to find a way to bring stats to life in a tangible way and place them in a public space. Aesthetically, he says, his team wanted to create something that would change depending on the angle at which people looked at it.” -Alexandra E. Petri,National Geographic,March 10, 2017

Poetry
Alberto Rios, “Day of the Refugios”
I was born in Nogales, Arizona, On the border between Mexico and the United States. The places in between places They are like little countries Themselves, with their own holidays Taken a little from everywhere. My Fourth of July is from childhood, Childhood itself a kind of country, too. It’s a place that’s far from me now, A place I’d like to visit again. The Fourth of July takes me there. In that childhood place and border place The Fourth of July, like everything else, It meant more than just one thing. In the United States the Fourth of July It was the United States. In Mexico it was the día de los Refugios, The saint’s day of people named Refugio. I come from a family of people with names, Real names, not-afraid names, with colors Like the fireworks: Refugio, Margarito, Matilde, Alvaro, Consuelo, Humberto, Olga, Celina, Gilberto. Names that take a moment to say, Names you have to practice. These were the names of saints, serious ones, And it was right to take a moment with them. I guess that’s what my family thought. The connection to saints was strong: Mu grandmother’s name--here it comes-- Her name was Refugio, And my great-grandmother’s name was Refugio, And my mother-in-law’s name now, It’s another Refugio, Refugios everywhere, Refugios and shrimp cocktails and sodas. Fourth of July was a birthday party For all the women in my family Going way back, a party For everything Mexico, where they came from, For the other words and the green Tinted glasses my great-grandmother wore. These women were me, What I was before me, So that birthday fireworks in the evening, All for them, This seemed right. In that way the fireworks were for me, too. Still, we were in the United States now, And the Fourth of July, Well, it was the Fourth of July. But just what that meant, In this border place and time, it was a matter of opinion in my family
Adrian Castro, “The Sound of One Immigrant Clapping”
Let’s say he actually did not arrive on a boat— that the relentless colonel never found his subtle throat hidden under the trance of the clave or thunder hands that spoke repiques of those crimes Let’s say he went to Nueva York on the assumption Mario Bauzá Machito or Tito (Rodríguez or Puente) could make his legs & hips move in a constellation of joy Let’s say he merely tried to hear the echo of his arms flapping through a factory like a red rag fastened to that fan Let’s say the cold often froze his vowels tan Caribeña tan resualosa y mermelada— Could the immigrant even mute the melody of his tongue— They say it is silence that makes music But this will be like drumming on a distant tuft of cloud like the colonel cutting the sound he never found But it takes years of forgetting for a stranger to breathe the saltwater or glance at a pile of stones & say I arrived through this portal This is now my home . . .
