For some reason, I'm hyperfixating really hard on Vampire Knight right now, so uh....
I may have bought the art book. And by "may have," I mean absolutely, definitely, 100% impulse-bought the art book.
And I have thoughts. A lot of thoughts.
So here's some of my favourite art from the book! Also, apologies for shitty, phone-quality photos.
(Under the cut so this doesn't get too long.)
Pretty outfits!
Kaname in a Day Class uniform.
I don't know what's funnier here, what Yuki's doing to Zero's hair or the fact that he's letting her. And in class (or at least, in public) by the looks of it, given that they're in uniform.
I hate how cute they are in chibi. Grr. >.<
I love their expressions in this. Like, you've walked in on them and they're both annoyed by it.
Ugh, this one is one of my favourites. It's just gorgeous. I like the symbolism, too---Yuki has her long hair and Artemis scythe, so this is after the whole pureblood reveal. The broken chains could represent her breaking the seal on her memories and powers, and of course they're red---so much of her life is soaked in blood, and if I remember correctly, her repressed memories manifested in visions of blood.
This one is interesting to me. Again, Yuki has long hair, meaning that this is post-awakening. She's holding Yuri protectively, almost possessively.
The thing that intrigues me the most is that Yuri seems to be wearing a Cross Academy necklace, like Yuki's. Is this symbolism, or is it just something I've forgotten about?
This illustration has always been one of my favourites. I think it's so funny that Zero and Kaname look like they're about to attack each other, and Yuki is physically holding them apart like, "c'mon guys, can you at least wait until after our picture is taken?"
I feel like it encapsulates their dynamic really well. ^-^
Well, that's all for now! But I have more thoughts. Lots more.
Stay tuned, if you're interested!

ASK COMPILATION: just answering to some sweet messages and casual questions!
I'm not sure what you mean 😅 I just started talking about DU drow and my thoughts on BG3 because I got bit with the writing bug. I figured out how to best tag things as I went!
Thank you! I use the Artemus brushes from CSP assets to do my lines, and I'm a huge fan of many of the brushes from the DAUB packs, especially the PIGMENTO set.
Thank you so much! I've been drawing since I was a child, but I started taking it seriously in my late teens. How long a drawing takes depends on many factors and varies a lot, but much of stuff in this blog took anywhere from a few hours to 1-2 days to complete.
So glad you've been enjoying the patreon, thank you so much for your support!
I'm crafty by necessity, mostly LOL I'm a cheapsteak so I have some minor skill in a few areas like carpentry, sewing, general home-upkeep, that kind of thing. It's not as artistic as it is just practical knowledge, though I'm sure you could argue that there's a lot about it that overlaps with the way I approach art. Drawing has indeed always been something I did, and I was definitely the "kid that draws" of the class growing up.
The concepts for Sad Sack and Sortie were the brainchildren of my partner, @barbatusart, so I'm afraid I can't really speak to that question specifically. BUT I would say you pretty much nailed it already: you have to do whatever you're passionate about in that moment and hopefully that will attract the attention of others with similar interests. Overthinking whether or not something will be well received when it has barely been conceived yet is kind of a creativity killer, in my personal opinion. Dance like nobody can see you and you are bound to impress at least a couple of people with confidence alone.
You're incredibly sweet 😭😭😭 I'm just trying to have fun here! The BG3 community in general is incredibly chill, to be fair, which makes it easy to follow suit. We're all adults trying to ponder the orb and the five million different universes where we romanced the same 2-to-3 people, you need a level head to deal with that, I guess!
The visuals here are a little dated, but perhaps it being from a time when I was drawing more realistically could actually be helpful in this case! Either way I think the written advice is much more helpful and it holds up to the way I learned/do things still.
LOL, minus the body scars that I add in my art DU drow is 100% all larian homebrew, so I always figured someone, somewhere, would eventually make an exact carbon copy of him by accident except name him Greg or something. It's totally fine and I would be crazy to get upset about it 😂😂😂Frankly, I'm surprised it isn't more common! When I made him I really felt like I was just playing Generic Beefsteak Generator 2000.

narrator Chara
I consider myself something of a narrator, or at least a raconteur. I like telling stories, and I like being the person on the spot with an epigram or witticism. People with that sort of ability tend not to be remembered, though, except vaguely. They might get a terse mention here and there as a "humorist" or a "wit". Dave Barry has about that level of fame. How many people here have heard of Artemus Ward or Petroleum V. Nasby? Probably not many.
I don't know how "Chara" I am any more. Everything seemed so much clearer, so many years ago. Now I'm someone with a life, responsibilities, family, a household to keep up with. I've been afraid of Undertale screwing that up. But I guess it's time to grapple with the big questions. I must confront my own Creator, so to speak.
I have Opinions™ about the game of course and interpreting things. I have tried to be as objective as possible in my assessment of Undertale (and Deltarune) which...has certain implications. Undertale is told very elliptically, i.e. there's little information to go on. There's hints, suggestions, some plot threads, but the gaps in the storytelling are enormous—and surely this is quite deliberate. My own instinct is that Fox would like to draw the player's attention to this incompleteness. It's significant that there's so little information to go on. It means we should all be cautious about jumping to unwarranted conclusions.
(A glimmer from somewhere of Tamamo-hime. Well...Toby Fox is named Fox.)
I must apply this to myself: it's been a while since I've seen Undertale last and my memories could be tricking me, but I don't see enough evidence in the game to sort out whether Chara (never explicitly named) is the narrative voice. The red text in the "No Mercy" timeline makes things especially unclear, because that red text seems to be Chara's voice breaking through ("my room" etc.) in which case, the usual narrative text can't be Chara, right?
And then there's the perplexing moment of "It's me, Chara." Is that Frisk saying "that's my reflection in the mirror, Chara"? Is it Chara asserting who they are? Is it something else?
I will dare to suggest that this conundrum is not intended to have a solution, and that Fox has indicated this with a supremely ambiguous moment in the "No Mercy" timeline of Undertale. This moment is impossible to interpret, I say. It is not meant to be interpreted. It is, in fact, the mystery of the Trinity in a game—a moment when the player of a game induces a character in the game to look into a mirror and interact with their own reflection. It's like the famous hall-of-mirrors shot in Citizen Kane, near the end of Kane's life. Welles is suggesting that Kane is unknowable. Perhaps this issue of Chara's narration is also unknowable.

ask game: for TRC what's a pairing u are Not a fan of? 👀
I’ll just answer all the fandom asks for trc since that’s one of those questions
Favorite character: Adam and Blue could fight it out depending on my mood since they’re all time favs for different reasons, but these days have had clinical levels of Adam brain rot so Adam <3 love that demented freak so bad
Least Favorite character: both Niall and Artemus for different reasons Niall I hate more as a person but he at least brings some interesting things to the narrative (even if I think the narrative also is kinder to him than he deserves) whereas Artemus is just boring + takes time away from more interesting Blue plots + dynamics so I resent him more ultimately. So Artemus. But of the mains + fandom favs there’s no one I strongly dislike I would have said Kavinsky a few years ago but that was only because I hated his fandom passionately, his char in a vacuum I’m quite centrist about.
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon):
Adam x Gansey, Blue x Gansey, then if we’re including td3 Jordan x Hennessy is in third place and Jordan x Declan in fourth, and fifth Blue x Noah. not counting td3 fourth is Pynch (I’m mean about them sometimes but when trc Pynch is good they are really good.) and 5th hmmm. will go with Gansey x Henry but it could be one of a few ships depending on my mood, this is the everyone loves everyone series after all.
Character I find most attractive: middle school Sana was in love with Helen lol to the point where I mentally wrote some self insert-y Blue x Helen fanfiction. Now I would probably say Gwenllian (which is helped by the fact when I went to work on her section of my trcverse minor women Pinterest board I saw a lot of Katie McGrath/ Morgana images and I’m watching bbc Merlin rn so! relevant to my interests).
Character I would marry: Jordan <3.
Character I would be best friends with: I don’t badly want to be friends with anyone from the verse of protags..Jordan and Blue are the only candidates out of them everyone else is just automatically nope. Oh and I could hang with ghost Noah but probably not Noah back when he was alive. In general honestly I’d love to spend time with Persephone as her research assistant in her phd writing or being trained by her like Adam was or having her as an Aunt/maternal figure like Blue did.
A random thought: very normal about this series as you can tell
An unpopular opinion: well I just said this in the tags of that poll but even though I love TDT a lot it’s not my unequivocal favorite like it is for a lot of people / I prefer BLLB and TRB as overall books. Part of this is def character biases related since TRB is the Adam book but also has quite a bit of Blue/300 fox way and then BLLB is the Blue book but also has quite a lot of Adam focus (although ironically TDT is probably my favorite book of them all for Adam content specifically. I love when my favs get messy <3) and I love Ronan but gravitate towards him least out of the core four.
My canon OTP: Blue x Gansey
Non-canon OTP: Adam x Gansey
Most badass character: honestly not a lot of chars in this verse I think of as badass… I mean Adam’s ruthlessness and cleverness are impressive as hell but I also think of him as more pathetic than he gets credit for being in certain ways so hesitate to call him that. Calla or the Gray Man
Pairing I am not a fan of: I really don’t have a ship I hate or even strongly dislike overall in this verse, it’s more about active vs passive interest in various pairings or that existing on a scale, or it’s about how I feel about fandom’s take on a dynamic. I used to say Rovinsky but again that was for fandom reasons not canon ones and certainly not for morality discourse reasons. These days if I’m being negative about a ship it’s usually Pynch and that’s for a combination of late canon reasons + fandom issues. BLLB Pynch will always have been a slay though, and they get to take that to their graves some ships never achieve that level of slay even for a limited time. Least interesting relationship across the board…. Sorry to say it but honestly Carliana. I enjoyed some td3 yuri in that I was obsessed with the Jordanessy clonefucking vibes and intrigued by what little Carmenessy there was but Carliana… I can’t say I found it terribly compelling. But not to the extent of hate just like a flatline.
Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): trc wise Blue but Not for the reasons I’ve seen fandom go for in the past as some of the things fandom slotted as bad writing / screw ups I would defend as good character writing specifically the types of criticisms that were just like. “It’s bad writing that she has dimensionality and flaws such as being judgmental or insecure or hypocritical and having imperfect views of feminism or being occasionally classist or displaying internalized misogyny but when the boys do this sometimes to worse extents (especially on the misogyny front) I think it’s a realistic flaw boys will be boys” DIE! And then as a response to this criticisms ik Blue stans in old school fandom (I might even have been a bit guilty of this when I was like. 13) would write a million headcanons about Actual Blue who is a perfect feminist unlike canon Blue and like… ultimately that’s not Blue / not the char I love. Not that this is specific to Blue it happens all the time with similar molds of character or female chars in other archetypes with adjacent discourse surrounding them Piper McLean is another example that comes to mind, so many others count especially in male-lead media where there’s then pressure on the fewer female chars to represent ideals rather than being three dimensional people the way the male chars are. So I think Those criticisms of Blue’s writing are ultimately not relevant in my mind / aren’t real criticisms. And in general I think she’s a well written character in the first three books which is not to say that misogyny doesn’t impact how she’s written in those books I could certainly be analytical about that if I wanted to be but nothing that detracts from her overall character. HOWEVER, the writing still Does ultimately fail Blue / do her dirty / is misogynistic towards her not because she has these flaws but because the narrative ultimately *resolves* these flaws by having her only learn to not be so judgemental of rich white boys and one rich Asian boy instead of anyone else or spending an equal amount of time breaking down their assumptions about her, TRK doesn’t give her personal struggles almost any page time and she has the sloppiest resolution in that book with her whole fundamental nature being boiled down to her being a tree before she has to Plot. So yeah I do think she’s done dirty by the writing but I’m generally hesitant to agree with people who say that she deserves better writing before I hear qualifying statements about what exactly they mean / how they mean it, for these reasons.
Favourite friendship: despite also shipping them my gut instinct was Blue and Noah, otherwise it’s Adam and Persephone

@wxr-zxne liked for a thing with artemus
There’s kindness even with the glimpse of sharp teeth in the smile he gives, a bubbly, near infectious happiness spreading from the priest as moved among the parishioners. A kind hand and comment given before moving onto the next and the next, more than a few older women pulling the priest into a conversation he hadn’t been previously involved in all because he’d strayed too close. More than one loudly lamenting when he’d managed to slip away to speak with someone else.
“-Don’ worry, Mrs. Martinez, the bake sale is still fully in your guiding hands.” Artemus managed to exhale as he was pulled along again once more, his opinion needed for what project to work towards next in the community. The polite smile on his face skillfully hid the worry and stress that lurked under his skin, nodding along until he managed to stand off to the side of the main doors, taking a breath of relief.
Seemed his spot of peace wasn’t as empty as he’d thought it’d be, he nodded, hiding the mild embarrassment for failing to notice before, “I cannae say I’ve seen you here before, but welcome. I always try to welcome new parishioners here personally if I can.”

TRC rewrite: Main characters
Why? Because The Raven Cycle is a mess. From the setting, through characters and to the plot, everything is a mess on a foundations of good ideas. It feels like Margaret took three to four different drafts, stitched them together and switched around events, e.g. things that should be in book 1 are in book 3, etc.
So, here is my attempted to rewrite the Gangsey.
Blue
curly, damaged, black hair kept short; brown eyes and light brown skin
short and stocky, with a big eyes; untamed, arched eyebrows; and round nose
1/4 black, 3/4 white (Maura is 1/2 black, and Artemus is welsh)
her father, Artemus, was a history professor, focusing on British Isle (especially Wales)
when she was 14, her father's ghost appeared on Saint Mark's Eve, he suddenly died few months, leaving Blue devastated
was very close with her dad, didn't forgive her mother for not trying to save Artemus
straightens and clips down her hair to make it resemble hers dad's
owns a pink switch blade, which was once red, she stole from her father's stuff, uses it mostly to cut plants
knows a lot about plants, helps cultivated and collect them for the family business
interested in and actively looks for paranormal (magic, cryptids, you name it), interest seeded by her parents
went to public school, but after middle school was pulled out for homeschooling
works two part-time jobs, as a waitress at Nino's and a dog-walker, to have her own money
a psychic but her power makes it impossible to work as one
makes and remakes her own clothes, isn't good at it but she loves it
loves knitting sweaters for her friends and family
wears colorful, often clashing outfits with a lots of accessories
loves color blue, always has something blue in her outfit, even if only as an accent color
vegetarian
knows Adam from middle school, keeps warm relations with him (introduced her to his friends)
spends her Sundays with her family (e.g. hitch-hiking with her mother, helping with Calla, making sweater and clothes with Persephone, painting nails with Orla)
know few phrases in Estonian, thanks to Persephone
opinioned, independent and bold
environmentalist
Gansey
tousled, always preciously styled, brown hair; dark brown eyes, light skin
average but quite square built (looks stiff), straight nose, shadows and bags under eyes, often has pieces of mint leaves stuck it teeth
the shortest guy of the Gangsey
born with a silver spoon in his mouth
at ten, almost died from wasp stinks but survived thanks to "Glendower", obsessed with finding him ever since
insomniac, his grands and health suffers from it
was in the rowing team, until he slept through training and hit team-mate with a oar
has the power to commend people, but it's weak
loves mint-flavor things, borders on obsession
owns five different types of mint plants (Ronan named them)
makes mistakes in his research and normal day to day actions from lack of sleep, needs help of others
his mom buys him clothes
doesn't understand the value of money, mostly throws it around and leads people with no need to return it
needs glasses but often losses them (even worse with contacts), in the beginning of the story he's on his seventh pair
doesn't have friends outside the "Gangsey"
awkward about feelings and crushes, can't deal with them
has slit ADHD, needs to do something with his hands
perfectionist, fixes mistakes of others, brushes problems off
good at social interactions but horrible at maintaining relationships
after his grands suffered too much and his search for Glendower effected his school life, his parents cut him off from finances as a punishment
with Adam's help, found a job as a cashier at a grocery store, actually loves it
needs time to remember people's names
Ronan
curly, dark brown (almost black) hair, always shaven; blue eyes, pale skin (burns easily)
tall (tallest of the Gangsey) and quite muscular, angular face, narrow eyes, multiple scars on arms and few on face (oddly proud of them)
he's a copy of his own father, Niall Lynch (looks like a younger version of him)
shaved his head and got tattoos, after he discovered he's a copy, to resemble Niall as little as possible
dresses in what his father would never wear
has only one real tattoo, a Celtic cross on the back of his neck base, the rest of his back is dreamt up
the dream tattoo always changes, reflecting Ronan's mental/emotional state, but always has motifs of wings/feathers and branches twisting into Celtic knots
tried to stop dreaming up stuff multiple times, but it caused him headache and nausea, eventually ending in physical harm, went the dream "gets out"
confused about who or what he is
self-destructive, has no regards for his own safety
has a very strain relationship with Declan, envies his "realness"
vegan, loves animals and hates people who harm them
loves speed and racing, oddly proud of his speeding-tickets
believes for a long time, only Kavinsky understands him, but their "friendship" is complicated
doesn't allow anyone to touch Chainsaw (dream creatures are very personal to a dreamer)
tries to figure out what HE likes, and find his OWN path (even if it means craving it out)
touched starved
loves nature, can spend hours outside just sitting and thinking
acts and speaks before thinking, got himself in trouble for that many times (gets physical quiet often)
helps in the family "dream trade" business, doesn't want any of his creations near him, Chainsaw is the only exception
feels drawn to Cabeswaters, but he preferably would just burn it
knows Irish, speaks it when frustrated
before Niall's death, trained tennis and played on bagpipes (uilleann pipes), but stopped after his father's murder hates boxing
Adam
short, self-cut, light red-ish brown hair; grey eyes, tan skin with a lot of moles and freckles
skinny, deep-set eyes and a downturned lips
has only a backpack of his own stuff and a bike
deals with Gansey's antics only for a chance to escape his father and his living situation
lives with Gansey, Ronan and Noah in Monmouth
prioritises his education over his friendship with "Gangsey"
very frugal, keeps a "change jar"
mostly wears his wash-out Coca-Cola t-shirt, he bought with his first pay
the most sceptical about magic, still very cautious of it
hates loud sounds and physical contact
hates taking money from people and having money spend on him, but he knows he needs it
has three part-time jobs, including his favourite at the garage
loves cars, dreams about buying his own one day
afraid of heights and flying, childhood trauma
opportunist
highly values his independence
never refuses food
sacrificed his "hands and eyes" to Cabeswater, not only to wake the Ley Lines but also to escape his former life for good, seeing it as the only way (partly tricked by the forest)
deaf on the left ear but hears Cabeswater whispering to him through it
actively "fights" with Cabeswater for control (his way or the high way)
owns a old Nokia phone, only bought it to stay in contact with Gansey knows how to sew and dress a wound
Noah
messy, pale blond hair; light blue eyes, pale skin with a dark spot on the left side of his face
faded and lean; small, lively eye; bright, wide smile
kept him pretty much the same, but also add
sarcastic with a dry (and sometimes dark) sense of humor
"I'm the oldest one, so you should listen to me sometimes."
his Aglionby uniform always looks crinkled and dirty
doesn't remember most of his "living life"
gets his memories back from seeing/visiting people/places he knew
his emotional state effects his corporal form, e.g. strong negative emoticons make him less visible
music helps him stay visible
still loves Blink-182 (Ronan pirated him all their albums, including those he missed)
misses skateboarding, swimming, spending time with his old friends and family, and filling the weather
doesn't remember his death, only the pain
likes to wander around Henrietta
likes anything glitter, reminds him of his sisters
gave Adam permission to take his old Mustang, "If you can bring it to live, Parrish."
his disappearance is still a talked subject in Aglionby
sometimes mumbles or swears something no one understand, took Gangsey time to figured out it was polish
+ Bonus
Chainsaw
Ronan's first dream creature (or at the time Ronan believes so)
quite small for a raven
senses Ronan's emotions, always tries to comfort him by burying into his neck or "grooming" him
can speak single works but they sound very corrupted, e.g. "kerah" is a corrupted version of "cara" (irish for "friend")
at the beginning called Ronan Greywaren, but with time it change to "creātor" (creator), "somniator" (dreamer) and finally "cara" (friend), reflecting Ronan's own view of himself
likes to collect and bring Ronan small things, e.g. pen caps, leaves or pieces of newspapers
gets close only to people Ronan likes and/or trusts
If you have any questions or opinions to share, please send me an ask.
Thank you, for your attention :)

Alright, let’s see -
In reference to [this post], wherein I transcribed an article copied to the Washington DC Evening Star in 1896, from Pearson’s Weekly
I couldn’t find that article in Pearson’s - it doesn’t seem to appear in the newspaper records I have access to - but it is in Volume I of Pearson’s Magazine, published as a sort of omnibus of funny stories and the like.
Pearson’s, I hadn’t realised, has a tagline - “To interest, to elevate, to amuse”.
The article in question (of the opinion that men ought to be allowed to wear skirts when cycling) was part of the series of writings called “Wisdom Let Loose” by WL Alden, and so I believe it was meant to be placed as part of “to amuse”.
WL Alden was a comedic writer, and as such it appears he was not seriously taking that thought, but rather making fun of “rational dress” - the idea at the time that women might wear some form of trousers or knickerbockers instead of skirts, as it was “rational”, it made more sense, was more sensible to wear men’s clothes instead of voluminous skirts and corsets - by flipping the idea on it’s head.
Which is unfortunate, as knowing that rather changes the tone of the article for me - of course it was written so as to be funny, but I hadn’t thought it was from that point of view - which is made clear in this review from 1896, published in Pearson’s on 22nd August.
[ID: a newspaper article titled “An Advertisement”. It reads -
Mr Douglas Sladen, writing in The Queen, says: “The first volume of Pearson’s Magazine is a credit to all concerned in its production. It does what it promised to do, gives a shilling or eighteenpenny magazine for the popular sixpence. The printing, done by Mr Horace Cox, both in the matter of type and blocks, leaves nothing to be desired. The pictures are by the best artists, admirably selected and reproduced, and its literary contents are a triumph of editorial acumen. The most striking of them, perhaps, are Mr Allen Upward’s ‘Secrets of the Courts of Europe’, and perhaps the best single item is Mr Frankfort Moore’s ‘Nell Gwyn’.
“Mr Alden’s ‘Wisdom Let Loose’ is capital, quite as good as Bill Nye, and almost as good a Mark Twain. Indeed, I think if he were to call himself Alden, without any W. L., and hit upon some first-rate title like ‘The Jumping Frog’, there is no reason why a reprint of them should not be as popular as Artemus Ward’s and Mark Twain’s books of American humour.
“He would need a daring and skilful publisher, of course, and luck in catching the eye of the unliterary public. The main object of an author who wants to be successful is, not to catch the eye of readers, but the eye of people who do not read, for the literary public is so hopelessly scanty, while the sporting public, for instance, has hardly any limits.
“The particular character of Mr Alden’s wit is the delicate satire which which he makes his points by saying the converse of what he means. In approaching the subject of rational dress for cycling, for instance, he urges the claims, not of knickerbockers for women, but of skirts for men.
“Mr Alden is really extremely funny, and never transgresses the bounds of good taste. He is especially funny when he is poking gentle fun at the spread-eagleism of his fellow countrymen. For Mr Alden is an American. He was formerly Consul-General in Italy, and if I mistake not, is a cavaliere of the kingdom of Italy.” /End ID]
Anyway, apart from Mr Alden, here are a couple of pieces in Pearson’s referencing men in skirts (or women in trousers) - a warning, of course, for some period-typical attitudes and wording
Pearson’s Weekly, 27th August 1898.
[ID: Women Who Dress Like Men.
There have been not a little talk lately of women who have adopted male costume in order to pose as men. It is, however, well known that several women adopt the costume with no such idea, but merely on account of its convenience for their peculiar avocations, a fact which is sufficiently demonstrated every day in the week, to say nothing of Sunday,, by the hundreds of women who have taken to wearing knickerbockers when on cycling bent.
While our insular notions make the adoption of coat and trousers very rare indeed among the well-known or well-to-do people in England, there is a refreshing radicalism on this subject abroad.
Many people will recall the fact that for many years the greatest woman painter of France, Rosa Bonheur, has adopted a masculine attire for her work, as she found that trousers are far less inconvenient for the painting ladder than are skirts.
In a similar way, at the time when the equally great actress Madame Sarah Bernhardt, took up sculpture as a pastime, she used to wear a suit of white flannel - coat and trousers - in her studio.
Both these women, however, do not habitually appear in public disguised out of all resemblance to their sex, for they are women to whom the skirts, lace, and the frou-frous, which are essentially feminine, are peculiarly becoming.
On the other hand, Madame Dieulafoi, who has the reputation of being not only one of the most famous women in Paris, but also one of the greatest archaeologists in Europe, never puts off her masculine garments for the accepted ones of her sex.
Most people will be surprised to learn that she is a married woman, and her husband is not averse to her appearing in clothes cut exactly like his, for she thinks that they are not only comfortable, but convenient for her in her work. It was she who discovered the ruins of the Temple of Darius, which are now in the Louvre, and which won for her the decoration of the Legion of Honour, and well as the privilege from the French Government to wear men’s clothes at all times.
There are none of the external marks of femininity about her, for her hair is cut short in a straight uncurl fringe across her forehead, and it need hardly be added that she wears a silk hat, and insists on her tailor giving her a cut that fits her figure to perfection. On the other hand, she is not at all masculine in her habits or manners, for she is a woman who is essentially feminine, and whose manliness is limited merely to her clothing. /End ID]
I’m not sure at all of the significance of the silk hat, personally, but there follows a sort of reply to this article later that same year -
Pearson’s Weekly, 17th September 1898.
[ID: SILK HAT has been reading the article “Women Who Dress Like Men” that appeared in PW recently, and wonders why in common fairness men may not dress as women. He says: “I am no effeminate, but greatly admire stylish ladies’ dress, which I confess I wish I might adopt in leisure hours, especially on hot days. At present, if I ventured into the street so garbed, I should at once be locked up. This, I hold, is grossly unfair. If a woman is allowed to dress in her husband’s clothes, why should not the husband be allowed to dress in his wife’s and both go for a walk thus attired if they want to?” ----- (In reply) I undertake to say that every man will agree with me, he would not under any circumstances adopt a woman’s dress for comfort alone. Does SILK HAT think that even a white blouse and skirt with their accessories are any cooler that a set of flannels to which there need not be any under-garments? Moreover, the law has very good reasons of its own for preventing men from parading around in female garb. /End ID]
And, further, GAZETTE wrote in November of that year -
Pearson’s Weekly, 12th November 1898.
[ID: It seems that the custom of men wearing women’s apparel is not entirely unknown in India, for a correspondent signing himself GAZETTE, writes from Berar, to say that: “From eleven to three o’clock in the day my house is clear of servants and I always seize this opportunity for discarding male attire for something that is to me infinitely more comfortable. To all intents and purposes I wear the same as that worn by my wife. Don’t think, however, that I care to be seen in my skirts. I don’t. For I admit that I look absurd, and under no circumstances should I wear this costume in the street, although, as a matter of fact, I should certainly never be mistaken for anything but what I am. Do not think that I am effeminate, because I am not. Most of my spare time is spent on horseback, spearing boars, and hunting hyenas and jackals, the latter of which have to be finally dispatched with a hunting knife. I am also keen on panther hunting. Still, I do not mind owning that except for riding and hunting, so far as comfort goes, I would sooner wear skirts than anything else.” /End ID]
Poor GAZETTE, all those qualifiers in place.

Vampire Knight Art Book (Part 3)
Apparently, only 30 images are allowed per post, so here's another part of details from the Vampire Knight Art Book!
(Ft. some symbolism analysis because I took art classes in college and I can't help myself.)
Harkening back to my last post, here's another example of Zero's symbols at play: a single fang, and blades. Interestingly, the fang is associated here with the bat wings (further pushing the idea that is specifically symbolizes vampire Zero), and the blades aren't the typical symmetrical daggers that he's usually represented by---they're sabres, or cutlasses.
An odd choice, given that they're traditionally a cavalry sword, and the crossed sabers/cutlasses specifically invoke pirate imagery... Again, I don't know if this is a purposeful symbolistic change, or if it's just a stylistic choice with no deeper meaning. Especially since I can't think of a reason why Zero would be connected to pirates or cavalry soldiers in particular.
This one is just fun. 1.) Why is Zero dressed like Edward Cullen? 2.) What's with his necklace that looks like a family crest? And 3.) What the fuck is going on with Yuki's weird, toeless stockings?
Akatsuki's slutty little tattoo.
Lots of fun details on this one. I mostly wanted to talk about her tattoo, however: a butterfly caught in a spiderweb, with one wing falling off. That feels very symbolically signifigant...but frankly, it's late, and I don't remember enough about Vampire Knight to speculate on the meaning.
Zero, bloody, impaled on pieces of an iron fence, clutching Yuki's necklace. And are those...claw marks? Very interesting. Especially when Kaname is depicted with claws elsewhere...
So, I originally thought the chess piece entangled in chains and pierced with a dagger was the Bishop, and I had this whole spiel prepared about how it represented Kaien Cross, or perhaps Cross Academy itself, and how Kaname manipulated the entire school to suit his plans....then I looked it up and realized that that is, in fact, a King, and I am a dumbass.
There's still plenty of symbolism here, though. In the series itself, Kaname is associated with chess, and there are very unsubtle parallels drawn between his manipulation of things and chess. (To the point that there's a scene, around when Maria Kurenai shows up, where he's playing chess and talks about how he "arranged things this way.")
There's also another example of the bat wing motif tied to the Night Class, and perhaps something interesting to be said about the daggers depicted. After all, their silhouette is awfully similar to the dagger that Zero is typically associated with....

i’ve been reading “The Raven Cycle”, and i’ve almost finished “The Raven King” so i thought i’d share some of the casting choices my imagination has been making for this book serie, fully aware that none of this actors are probably gonna be in the tv show (if that even still exists, i’m beginning to think it was an hallucination) either because they are too famous, too expensive for a show that i think will be kind of low budget, or simply because maybe they do not fit what the author was imagining.
— Maura Sargent ·· Ruth Negga
Whenever Ruth Negga is casted they always go for a very youthful look for her characters, but she is in her late 30s, so surely old enough to be credible as the mother of Blue. She has a very mysterious and yet calming aura which I think would suit the role of Maura just fine.
— The Gray Man ·· Paul Bettany
Tall, dirty blond hair and gray eyes, as soon as Mr. Gray made his appearance in the books my imagination immediately went for Paul Bettany. As of now, he would maybe be a bit too old for the role, but as i previously said, i’m not really hoping for this casting to end up somewhere.
— Piper Greenmantle ·· Holliday Grainger
Before casting Piper my mind went to other famous blondies with a badass attitude, such as Natalie Dormer or Margot Robbie, but when I thought about Holliday Grainger for the role I was completely sold and now I cannot picture anyone else. She has a very sweet face and expression but I’ve seen her in more sassy and bitchy roles (namely, her role in the mini-serie “Patrick Melrose”) , she would be capable of nailing it.
— Colin Greenmantle ·· Luke Kirby
I’ve been seeing that many people thought about John Mulaney for the role, and I’m here for it. But as I was reading my imagination went elsewhere and now I’m sold to this casting, which I think still fits Colin Greenmantle and his aesthetic.
— Gangsey ·· unknowns
While I’m reading I’m not imagining any specific actor playing the role when it comes to Blue, Ronan, Gansey, Noah, Adam or Henry. I think that, in a tv adaptation, they should go for unknown actors and I’ve always imagined Ronan Noah and Gansey being white, caucasian boys, while Blue and Adam I’ve always seen as poc. Henry’s ethnicity is of course mentioned in the book.
I’ll mark this post as a work in progress, as I’m still trying to figure out specific actors for the other main roles in the book, namely the women of 300 Fox Way, Artemus, Whelk and others! If you have suggestions, opinions or you just want to chat you are more then welcome to contact me!

Gala is the first to stir from their shared slumber, announcing her awakening with a jaw-splitting yawn. She's usually a solitary beast when it comes to her napping, but she's becoming fond of having the big bear as a companion. Though his belly is the perfect spot for her head to rest, she's had enough for now. Lifting herself sluggishly, she shifts behind the Pangoro and begins to preen the fuzzy fur atop his head. Her clicking is akin to purring, rousing him gently from his sleep.
The world as they know it is changing.
Whether it be for the better is all a matter of opinion.
But for the pokemon?
Everything was fine and dandy. At least Pangoro thought so.
The warm tropics of his homeland coupled with the gentle ocean breeze were an ideal setting for a early morning snooze.
Things got easier now that their little wild Rose had found humans like herself to distract her, for the stress of keeping a keen attention to her safety was suddenly alleviated. If she were among her own kind, then he would not have Artemus or Orpheus yapping in his ear about distractions. With the change of environment, the last thing he expected was to be making new friendly company…
Trading out 4 bodies for 1 big one of his own size was the best decision of the century.
Pangoro slept heavy when he found the time to sleep, an arm tucked behind his head while the other furled around the smooth armored carapace of the companion resting on his stocky stomach. The breeze rippled gentle across the plush fur of his body, at even pace with his deep lumbering breaths, the chime of the trees rustling proved to be the natural lullaby that kept him in his sweet sweet dreams. From between black lips and thick teeth, the long bamboo stock bobbed, its leafy tip swaying with every vibration that surrounds him. An inconspicuous, but effective alert system. Not one he felt he needed now, with her in his arms.. but old habits die hard.
What ever could a pokemon dream of? A wonder few humans ever considered of their partners, when they still considered the ethics of the world.
Pango, despite his intimidating size and gruff demeanor, still dreamed of his days as a pacham. Somewhere deep in the depths of the mind, he walked the fields and roamed the forest with a nurturing paw in his own, scavenging berries and practicing his hunting on the bugs his mother allowed him to hunt. In a time before he knew what loss meant, he basked in the innocent peace of childhood, blissfully unaware of the way time began to blurr the details of his mother’s face and voice. There comes an edge to dreaming, as you reach the end of a cycle, when the dreamer slowly becomes aware of the flaws in their fantasy.. The grass was too green, the scents were shifting in ways that did not match the scene. The little bear, with his paws mucked by sticky sap and dirt, could smell the ocean when there should have only been the earthy smell of wet soil. The world begins to dim at its edges , fizzing, the soothing voice of his mother distorting as she groomed him.. For a split second, the ocean he smells is a wave of panic that sets an aching in his muscle. The fear he’s known as a cub grows, and he cant describe why it did. His dark eyes widen and watch helplessly, for his world burns and fades to black. In one last desperate attempt, his head whips back to find answers in the mother that cradles him..
But she was gone. Just like everything else.
She was gone and he still couldn't accept it.
The bamboo stock creaks between clenching teeth.
Awareness is a slow trickle upon the senses as his muted world of black is penetrated by those ill-fitted smells that altered his dream state. As consciousness builds, Pangoro is aware of the weight of his own body, but also the lack of what had once laid upon his stomach. Tingling pricks up in his scalp where his mother had been grooming , the haze he realizes now was no figment of his dream, for there was a warmth that affectionately brushed through the dense white fur. Pangoro grimaced but stirred lightly as the numbness of sleep shook out of his limbs. He grumbled sluggishly,
“ You’re up early…”
Earlier than himself, that is. As if the sun was not glaring above them at noon. Resisting the need to open his eyes, the bear inhaled deeply through the nostrils, then yawned.
The ocean may have been far away, but the embodiment of the sea lay just behind him. Gala’s armored build may not have been the softest, yet he found comfort in the scent of sea salt that clung to her skin. A piece of home he could always have near, if only he buried his nose into her, or stuck his tongue out for a lick. Did she notice the way his body trembled when he woke? Did she notice how hardly he suddenly balled his fist?
All too aware of his unease, a part of him prays she wouldn't see as he forces the tension free and at last opens his sleep-crusted eyes. To sink down, away from her tongue, and look upon the angel that cradled him. His eyes, deep and warm like the alolan earth, radiated nothing short of loving admiration , as best as he could muster upon first waking. Pangoro shifted the bamboo to the corner of his teeth and grinned lazily,
“ Good Morning, Gala.” he purred. His massive paw rose from his chest and stroked a black claw tenderly down her jaw,
“ You smell real good. I ever tell you that? Like living by the sea..”
Pango mustered the strength just enough to roll onto his belly and lazily drape his arms around her middle,
“ Hope I didn’t wake you, did I?”

okay so I saw your fox way post (which i realise is from like 5 months ago so i'm sorry if it's not in your main interests anymore) and I wanted to know what you think would be some good descriptors for the organised comfy chaos that is their house. bc i love the idea of a house of miss-matched over stuffed sofas and everything everywhere that doesn't understand the concept of minimalism but I can't find anything online that looks like what I imagine. Thoughts?
omg so The Raven Cycle in general, and Fox Way in particular, is never out of my main interests so thank you for this!! I actually have a Bunch of other metas that I’ve kinda collected notes for and one of them is actual physical descriptions of 300 Fox Way?
I feel bad because I’ve already promised @sparkly-things metas about Maura and Gray next up ages ago, but hopefully they won’t mind? And I happen to have a lil energy and time today, so here goes with every physical description of the house that I’ve collected during re-reads (may have missed stuff).
This got long, and is perhaps not even what you were looking for, but I hope it helps you and/or others looking for descriptions of the house!
Blue describes the architecture of the house, simply, as weird in TRB. In TDT she expands on that, saying it “was two houses knitted together, and neither structure had been a palace to begin with. Narrow hallways leaned eagerly toward one another.” I’m not sure if she means this literally, as in two small houses on nearby lots got made into one building somehow, or just that the way the house is built just makes it feel that way?
She goes on to talk about a “stray toilet gurgling somewhere” - since we know there is only the one bathroom is she talking about that or does this language mean there is maybe another toilet connected somewhere, like in a basement? Then “the wood floors were as buckled as the sidewalk out front.” Some of the walls were painted in vivid purples and blues, and some had decades old wallpaper (in the same rooms or in different rooms?). “Faded black and white photographs hung beside Klimt prints and old metal scissors. The entire decor was a victim of too much thrift-shopping and too many strong personalities.”
Gansey describes the house as being “cramped with extraneous people and whimsical objects. It hummed with conversation, music, telephones, old appliances.” Malory calls the house “lovely” and seems to appreciate just how many walls there are.
At one point, it’s said that 300 Fox Way is one mile away from Monmouth Manufacturing.
The exterior is a “little bright blue house”. There is a hand painted sign that reads “PSYCHIC” and then “By appointment only”. When turned around, the sign reads “CLOSED COME BACK SOON!” I’m not sure if there is a porch, but there is a porch light referred to when opening the front door, so that’s a good guess. There is a front step, so it’s not a ground level entrance to the front of the house the way it seems to be in the back.
Outside in the backyard - there’s Blue’s large Beech tree, which shades the entire backyard with it’s “beautiful, perfectly symmetrical canopy” that kept out all but the heaviest of rains. There is a high wooden fence covered with honeysuckle that blocked out neighboring lights and the canopy of the tree blocked out the moonlight.
Right off the sliding glass door in the kitchen, there’s a cracked brick patio leading into the yard itself. There are chairs arranged on the patio.
In the kitchen, above the table, is the chandelier described as a “badly designed stained-glass creation” (also described as “the fake Tiffany lamp”) - the one they have difficulty changing the bulbs in. The process of changing the bulbs took at least three hands and was generally left until all the bulbs had burned out - so consider that the kitchen would have different levels of light depending on how far along in this process they might be. The kitchen counters seem always to be cluttered with mugs, teas being made and packaged, essential oils, flowers, pots boiling, etc. There is also a cabinet filled with glasses, either in the kitchen, or close enough to the kitchen for them to rattle when one gets down off of the kitchen table.
Also in the kitchen - the door to the pantry that Artemus takes up residence in.
You can see to the front hall and the base of the stairs from the kitchen, and there’s a main hallway that connects from the kitchen, which is at the back of the house, to the front of the house where the front door is, and so I imagine that the stairs are right there in that front hall area. I also believe there is only the one set of stairs connecting the two floors. The staircase has a railing with a knob on it. In the hallway, there is a table with a clock on it.
The reading room can easily be gotten to from both the kitchen and the front hall, so I imagine it’s off to the other side of the stairs perhaps and maybe there’s a door from the hall and another to the back from the kitchen? There do seem to be multiple doors into the room, and since Adam describes it as a room meant to be a dining room, that makes sense to me. The doors are sometimes closed, so it’s not one of those rooms that is just separated off by archways or whatever.
Anyway, it is described as containing “the candles, the potted plants, the incense burners, the elaborate dining room chandelier, the rustic table that dominated the room, the lace curtains, and finally ... a framed photograph of Steve Martin.” Maura seems proud of that photograph, and makes sure to tell Whelk that it’s signed. It’s also described as having mismatched furniture, with an armchair at the head of the table. There’s a framed photograph of a standing stone on the wall. Also, apparently, there’s a phone in the reading room. There are blinds over the windows.
There’s also a living room, which I’m thinking is further into the house, because you can’t see the front hall/door from there. There is a fuzzy mint green love seat, and a blue striped chair, and a wicker bench in front of the window. There’s also a couch. I’m also guessing this is where the TV is, unless there is a separate TV room as well, somewhere on the downstairs level?
There is only one bathroom, and it’s upstairs. There’s a full bathtub.
The upstairs phone, the one dedicated to the psychic phone line Orla had put in, is in the Phone/Sewing/Cat room, which has green gingham wallpaper and is “full of a multitude of odds and ends”. I’m not sure if the long purple silk Calla does her aerial yoga in is always there, or of Calla sets it up before she does it each time? There are bins of sewing materials, a chair with a pillow on it, and I’m guessing this is the room with the sewing table in it?
Blue had repurposed canvas trees glued to her bedroom walls, decorated with collaged and found-paper leaves. There was a card table shoved against her twin mattress with reading materials on it, and a nightstand with a dim green lamp. Her closet door was covered with glued dried flowers. She had a ceiling fan that was hung with colored feathers and lace, also leaves. And she had copied a poem on her ceiling. There was a bird painted on one wall with a talk bubble that read “WORMS FOR ALL”. A shelf cluttered with buttons and scissors. A rotating fan in the corner. Blue’s room is adjacent to the Phone/Sewing/Cat room.
Maura has her own room, which is next door to the Phone/Sewing/Cat room. Calla describes it as being chaotic and messy and filled with too much shit.
Calla and Jimi share a bedroom. It is my considered opinion that they also share a bed, but this is never mentioned or alluded to. We do know that on Calla’s dresser is kept the three statues of Oya, Oshun, and Yemaya, the Yoruban goddesses.
Persephone’s bedroom was at the end of the hall upstairs, past the Phone/Sewing/Cat room and bathroom, and the door to her room was painted red. She had a desk with a Victorian desk chair, and a “high, elderly twin bed”. There was a shaggy rug.
Presumably Orla has a bedroom somewhere up there and if there are other residents of the house (see the post referred to in this ask for why I wonder about that possibility), then perhaps there are also other bedrooms??
The attic is accessible from the second floor with a door that leads to the stairs that lead up to it. This door is at the very end of the hall, probably past Persephone’s room. A single light bulb lit the attic and it didn’t reach the stairs, so that was a dark stairway. Once up there, there are numerous slanting roof lines which means this is one of those houses with lots of angles and not just one flat or arched roof. There’s also unfinished wood floorboards and areas patched with plywood. There’s a porthole window (along with other windows apparently?), the leads out to the mismatched roof angles outside. Before Neeve moved in, there was nothing up there because Maura was against collecting things.
When Calla and Blue go up to investigate once Neeve’s been living there, they find a mattress covered with throw rugs on the floor; lots of candles, bowls, and glasses cluttered together, bright painter’s tape making patterns between those objects, a half-burned plant stalk on a plate dusted with ashes, and in one of the narrow dormers - two full-length footed mirrors facing one another. Also a statue of a woman with eyes in her belly, a black leather mask with a large pointed beak, a red mask that matched it, a switch made of three sticks tied together with a red ribbon, and a little cloth bag with asafetida tied into it.
After they clear out Neeve’s things and it becomes Gwenllian’s room, the mirrors are still there, and the mattress, but it becomes cluttered with her own mess of things, also including candles and half-burnt plants.
So that’s what I got! LMK if you have more questions. I love this house and the people who live in so very much. Thanks for asking about it!

Number 001 for the Raven Cycle? Please? :D
Sure! Thank you for sending this! :)
[fandom asks]
Favorite character: Hmm… probably Ronan.
Least Favorite character: I’m going to be purposefully nonconventional by choosing a non-antagonist and say… Artemus. He’s, um, very unhelpful and cowardly, and wow, apparently sixteen years as a tree can really change you, because I cannot imagine Maura falling in love with someone like that.
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Oh… Pynch, Bluesey, Maura and Mr. Gray… I don’t know… Apparently I’m bad at ships…
Character I find most attractive: I don’t even… I’ve never actually thought about this? I don’t know. Adam, maybe.
Character I would marry: I honestly can’t think of anyone I would marry? It’s possible that I might feel differently at a different time, but I just don’t know that I would connect just right with any of them.
Character I would be best friends with: Blue or Adam, I suppose.
A random thought: Henry and Seondeok are part tir e e’lintes, okay? Just try and talk me out of this headcanon.
An unpopular opinion: Um… I am… perfectly okay with Kavinsky’s character arc. I don’t think Kavinsky was irredeemable, that he couldn’t have eventually learned to be a productive member of society. But I think it was… for lack of a better word, good to end his story that way. I think it was important to show that this person with so much outward show of confidence could still be suicidal. Apparently I have a lot I could say on this. I’m just going to stop.
My canon OTP: Pynch.
Non-canon OTP: I’m the worst at non-canon OTPs… I don’t think I even have one…
Most badass character: Blue Sargent. Definitely.
Pairing I am not a fan of: I’m not a huge fan of Sarchengsey… I know a bunch of people are, but it’s not really something I’ll look for.
Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): I can’t think of one. I’m pretty content with how the characters were carried throughout.
Favourite friendship: Um… all of them. All of the friendship are wonderful. I honestly couldn’t pick just one.

“...it’s quite possible that he’s not stupid at all.”
220 Comments “ “It isn’t what you don’t know that gets you in trouble, it’s what you do know that ain’t so” - Artemus Ward
“Trump is a chooch, not an idiot. Here’s the definition from The Urban Dictionary: “The term is derived from the Italian word "ciuccio" and means jackāss, dummy, idiot, or moron. A chooch is a person, who against better judgement, acts inappropriately.”
“I think Mr. Beam needs to reread the words of that politically incorrect but brilliant writer, Phillip Roth, who died recently but nevertheless had enough time to pass judgment on Donald John Trump: “I was born in 1933,” [Roth stated,] “the year that F.D.R. was inaugurated. He was President until I was twelve years old. I’ve been a Roosevelt Democrat ever since. I found much that was alarming about being a citizen during the tenures of Richard Nixon and George W. Bush. But, whatever I may have seen as their limitations of character or intellect, neither was anything like as humanly impoverished as Trump is: ignorant of government, of history, of science, of philosophy, of art, incapable of expressing or recognizing subtlety or nuance, destitute of all decency, and wielding a vocabulary of seventy-seven words that is better called Jerkish than English.”
