Some asshole US slave owner named Joel Poinsett claimed discovery of these flowers, named it after himself, and advertised it as Christmas decorations. Cuetlaxochitls are native to Mexico, blooming in the winter, and historically believed to have medicinal properties. It's name means "the mortal flower" for, as all living things do, bloom then wither.
