2023 vs. 2024 Part 3: Semi-Final 2
Closing out our look at the 2024 songs, we have the songs performing in this year's second semi-final. And just like in the previous post with Luxembourg's entry, I will be discussing Romania's 2023 entry to balance things out and make sure all entries from countries I am willing to cover are covered.
Romania: D.G.T. (Off And On). We all know that I actually liked this song. The music is good, the vocals were great, and Theodor Andrei has great potential to be a star. TVR screwed him over and ruined his experience, so I can only hope that he returns and does really well as revenge for 2023.
Austria: Who The Hell Is Edgar? vs. We Will Rave. Winner: Who The Hell Is Edgar?. We Will Rave will absolutely be a summer hit this year. It is made for that, and Eurovision will give Kaleen the jumping board for the summer hit that her song will become. But, I have a soft spot for Who The Hell Is Edgar?. My sister and I still joke (over a year later) that we are Teya and Salena. Plus, I do love Edgar Allen Poe's work...and he's from Boston where I'm studying...so...yeah.
Malta: Dance (Our Own Party) vs. Loop. Winner: Dance (Our Own Party). Loop is a party song. I could see myself going out with my friends and dancing and singing to this song (we're not professionals, and drinks are involved. Do with that what you will). But Dance (Our Own Party) is an introvert anthem. Much so that as an introvert myself, I added this song to my playlist!
Switzerland: Watergun vs. The Code. Winner: The Code. Switzerland gets off the male ballad train that they've been on and sends a banger, send post. In all seriousness, The Code is an EXPERIENCE when listening. Nemo's mix of so many genres, in my opinion, is an appeal to everyone. I will say that Watergun is beautiful, and a great way to end Switzerland's male ballad era.
Greece: What They Say vs. Zari. Winner: Zari. What They Say and Victor Vernicos deserve a lot more love than the fandom (including myself) give it. It's a wonderful song about anxiety that anyone can relate to. Yet, there's a theme to some of the songs this year where more ethnic pieces. We have a lot of languages returning after not appearing in the contest ever or years before. And Zari adds to the list. While we last saw Greek in 2022, the song (and video) is an ode to Greece.
Czechia: My Sister's Crown vs. Pedestal. Winner: My Sister's Crown. Pedestal has been a steady grower on me for a while. It's got quite the punch, that the revamp didn't kill when it came out earlier this week. But keeping a theme of songs with personal meaning, My Sister's Crown has that between the two.
Albania: Duje vs. Titan. Winner: Duje. Now if we were talking about the Albanian version of Titan, then we may be having a different conversation. Titan is good, but I feel the charm of the original version got a little lost in the song. Maybe that version needs to grow on me a little more. Then with Duje, keeping the song in Albanian worked. The revamp was more of a cleanup to make it sound a little better, which certainly helped.
Denmark: Breaking My Heart vs. Sand. Winner: Sand. Breaking My Heart wasn't as horrible as some may recall. It had a fun hook and was a great song to dance to. But Sand is amazing. The music has a groove, the lyrics hit, it's a complete package! It's a song that I really hope qualifies as some may see it as a glow up for Denmark.
Armenia: Future Lover vs. Jako. Winner: Future Lover. Both Future Lover and Jako prove great arguments either way. Jako is a fun song that feels like I'm at an Armenian party and Ladavina pulled me in to dance with them. Future Lover is a powerful ballad with a gentle mix of genres that I still joke about my future lover listening to.
Estonia: Bridges vs. (N)NETM(K)M *I'm not typing that*. Winner: Bridges. Yeah, no. I'm not typing that title. It's been steadily growing since I first heard it with the Eesti Laul songs. It's catchy, has a dance, and still should close the 2nd semi-final. Plus, the translation of the title alone is enough to send me. But my heart goes out to Bridges. I do love my ballads, and between the two I like Bridges more. But 5MIINUST and PUULUUP definitely have a point.
Georgia: Echo vs. Firefighter. Winner: Firefighter. Yet another tough decision as I liked both Echo and Firefighter. The songs are both iconic and sung really well, which only adds to the difficulty that it is picking. But Firefighter is another one of those songs that have been stuck in my head for a while now, which is great considering it was one of the last songs to be released.
Netherlands: Burning Daylight vs. Europapa. Winner: Europapa. Europapa is the Eurovision song this year. Every year, there is one Eurovision song that SCREAMS Eurovision, and Joost made it his mission for that to be his song. And his mission was succeeded, and the reward is this win. Burning Daylight was a great song that saw a lot of fans disappointed when it failed to qualify. But when choosing between that and Europapa, Europapa is it.
Norway: Queen Of Kings vs. Ulveham. Winner: Ulveham. This was yet another tough choice as I love both of these songs. Queen Of Kings is a powerful anthem that deserved its spot in the top 5. But as I mentioned when the National Final happened, Ulveham sounds so much like stuff I listen to outside of Eurovision. And I'm still in awe every time I hear it that it is real and it is happening!
Latvia: Aijā vs. Hollow. Winner: Aijā. We all knew this was going to happen. Sudden Lights put me under a trance which ended in my becoming a fan of their other music as well. It topped my Spotify Wrapped, it was my everything in 2023. They're a tough act to follow. Dons does this with Hollow. While it was a good choice for Latvia, I worry still that it may be too safe an entry. But it is a good, slower song in a year of high-energy bops.
San Marino: Like An Animal vs. 11:11. Winner: 11:11. Like An Animal was one of the entries that I didn't like at first, but by the end of 2023, I would be content if someone played it. But 11:11 is quite literally up my alley in the music world. I love rock (especially women-led rock), and I really hope that they get enough votes to bring San Marino to the Grand Final.
Belgium: Because Of You vs. Before The Party's Over. Winner: Before The Party's Over: We end this journey with one of the most obvious choices in the list. Don't get me wrong, Gustaph brought a great song that showed all of Europe (and the world) that Belgium is back to the way it was back in 2015-2017. But HOLY CRAP. I knew I was in for a treat when getting Mustii's first impression, and I was so blown away by Before The Party's Over. I still haven't been able to stop listening to it quite yet!

Monte Melqonyan/Մոնթե Մելքոնյան (1957-1993)
Honestly, I don't even know where to begin. He's one of those extraordinary individuals about whom countless books could be written and numerous movies could be made, yet still, so much would remain untold. You might wonder, "He's a National Armenian Hero—cool, but why should I know about him?" My answer is simple: if the world had more people like him, especially in today's times, it would be a much better place. He fought for justice, embodied culture and education, and radiated a deep love for his people and humanity as a whole. I believe everyone should aspire to have a little bit of Monte's spirit within them, regardless of their nationality.
Now, it's important to note that some things written about him in the Western press can be questionable and inaccurate. So, I would advise taking most of the information from those sources with a grain of salt.
Tumblr media
Monte was born on November 25, 1957, into an Armenian family in Visalia, California, that had survived the Armenian Genocide. From 1969 to 1970, his family traveled through Western Armenia, the birthplace of his ancestors. During this journey, Monte, at the age of twelve, began to realize his Armenian identity. While taking Spanish language courses in Spain, his teacher had posed him the question of where he was from. Dissatisfied with Melkonian's answer of "California", the teacher rephrased the question by asking "where did your ancestors come from?" His brother Markar Melqonyan remarked that "her image of us was not at all like our image of ourselves. She did not view us as the Americans we had always assumed we were." From this moment on, for days and months to come, Markar continues, "Monte pondered [their teacher Señorita] Blanca's question Where are you from?"
In high school, he excelled academically and struggled to find new challenges. Instead of graduating early, as suggested by his principal, Monte found an alternative - a study abroad program in East Asia. The decision to go to Japan was not random. He had been attending karate clubs and was the champion of the under-14 category in California. He also studied Japanese culture, including taking Japanese language courses. After completing his studies at a school in Osaka, Japan, he went to South Korea, where he studied under a Buddhist monk. He later traveled to Vietnam, witnessing the war and taking numerous photographs of the conflict. Upon returning to America, he had become proficient in Japanese and karate.
Tumblr media
Having graduated from high school, Monte entered the University of California, Berkeley, with a Regents Scholarship, majoring in ancient Asian history and archaeology. In 1978, he helped organize an exhibition of Armenian cultural artifacts at one of the university's libraries. A section of the exhibit dealing with the Armenian Genocide was removed by university authorities at the request of the Turkish consul general in San Francisco, but it was eventually reinstalled following a campus protest movement. Monte completed his undergraduate work in under three years. During his time at the university, he founded the "Armenian Students' Union" and organized an exhibition dedicated to the Armenian Genocide in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey.
Upon graduating, he was accepted into the archaeology graduate program at the University of Oxford. However, Monte chose to forgo this opportunity and instead began his lifelong struggle for the Armenian Cause.
Tumblr media
In the fall of 1978, Monte went to Iran and participated in demonstrations against the Shah. Later that year, he traveled to Lebanon, where the civil war was at its peak. In Beirut, he participated in the defense of the Armenian community. Here, he learned Arabic and, by the age of 22, was fluent in Armenian, English, French, Spanish, Italian, Turkish, Persian, Japanese, and Kurdish.
From 1980, Monte joined the Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA – I promise to tell you more about them later) and quickly became one of its leaders. In 1981, he participated in the planning of the famous Van operation. In 1981, he was arrested at Orly Airport in France for carrying a false passport and a pistol. During his trial, Monte declared, "All Armenians carry false passports—French, American—they will remain false as long as they are not Armenian." Over the following years, he perfected his military skills at an ASALA training camp, eventually becoming one of the group's principal instructors.
Tumblr media
Monte with his wife Seda
After being released from a French prison (once again) in 1989, Monte arrived in Armenia in 1991, where armed clashes between Armenians and azerbaijanis had already begun. He founded the "Patriots" unit and spent seven months in Yerevan working at the Academy of Sciences, writing and publishing the book "Armenia and its Neighbors." In September of the same year, he went to the Republic of Artsakh to fight for his fatherland and its people. Due to his military expertise, he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Martuni defense district in 1992. His sincerity and purity quickly won the love and respect of the local population and the Armenian community as a whole.
Throughout his conscious life, Monte fought for the rights of Armenians, recognition of the Armenian Genocide, and the reclamation of Armenian homeland.
There are various versions of Monte Melqonyan's death circulating in both Armenian and azerbaijani media. According to official Armenian information, Monte was killed on June 12, 1993, by fire from an azerbaijani armored vehicle.
Monte remains a lasting testament to the incredible potential unleashed when the Armenian patriotic heart unites with sharp intellect.

In case you'd like to put a voice to the face and hear about the Artsakh struggle directly from Monte, here he is speaking about it in English.

take-aways from Eurovision 2025
I watched pretty much the whole show last night. And it was awesome! It was such a long time ago since so many ACTUALLY GOOD acts were involved! Like, I did not actually expect bloody Lithuania to be my favourite this year!
okay, so… some observations:
The hosts were funny, especially the one with the suit with all the sequins and stuff. She was pretty ”I’m not like other girls”-coded because she wore plimsolls to Eurovision. My mum was jealous of the one in the silver dress because she was really buff.
Erika Vikman, you are an icon. Rock that microphone, baby! but what the hell… the song was really weird. And funny!
Lithuania is underrated. My best friend said they sounded very similar to her favourite band (Kalandra, a Norwegian rock/folk/idkwhatexactly band) and I agree.
the airplane and the dance in ”Espresso Macchiato” was my favourite moments of the whole evening. Estonia gets a little kiss on the cheek.
Malta’s performance was just really strange. It sounded like some wannabe-badass-gaslight-gatekeep-girlboss-anthem, but sounded a bit forced. And what was the deal with the yoga balls?!
England was surprisingly good! You could tell those Dolly Style (please swedes, do not say I was the only one who saw the resemblance between them) ladies were West End musical artists. The song was very musical theatre-y
The woman in the Albanian duo looked like a vampire, more specifically Nadja from ”what we do in the shadows”
Switzerland was also really good. The song made me calm and relaxed. The singer looks like a Swiss version of Lucy Dacus. Or maybe it is just her red dress that made me think so?
FREE PALESTINE AND FUCK ISRAEL but I have to admit the song was not bad… they should still not be allowed to compete, though.
my mum’s fav was Italy. Italy was good
Germany’s song made me really think of Charli XCX. And I do lot even listen to Charli XCX. Well done
san Marino was… Italian
Portugal made me think of a new song during every quick replay. It was ”Stairway to heaven” by Led Zeppelin, then ”Comfortably numb” by Pink Floyd and then… I can not recall what more I thought of
i absolutely ADORE that the majority of the acts are in another language than English, and many are in the country’s own language! I hope it continues on like this for the future!
KAJ är Österbottens boygenius och ingen kan få mig att ändra åsikt! (Translation: KAJ is the boygenius of Österbotten and nothing can make me change my mind!)
Latvia made everyone think of ”A midsummer night’s dream”. I thought the song would have been great in the school show I had back in February. They looked like pretty little faeries or nymphs or something…
how did Israel get second place..?
HOW DID MY BABIES GET FOURTH PLACE??! Go Sweden, you still rock. KAJ are the best xoxo *starts singing ”Bara bada bastu” very beautifully and doing really crappy choreography*
Austria was good. A little boring, but good. I do not mind that they won except that Sweden ended up in fourth place.
Norway and Denmark were, like, really boring. The songs were co-written by some well-known Swedish songwriters who write many of the songs in Melodifestivalen. They suck because they are not unique or interesting. When did Swedish songwriting get so boring? Poor Norway and Denmark
Armenia was like, ”everything in Eurovision is too gay and glittery and sparkly and girly. we need a big Alpha man who does not cry about his heartbreak and also makes everyone think of that one Swedish dude from 2017 who had a treadmill on stage. AND GE SHOULD BE COVERED IN MOTOR OIL! Because that is very Alpha.”
Luxembourg girl’s dress was fun. The song was forgettable.
nemo’s new song was thumbs. As a fellow non-binary human they get good grades in coolness.
Greece was okay. I liked the title of the song.
Netherlands guy looked like Tusse who was competing for Sweden in 2021, especially clothing-wise. his song was sweet.
Spain was not as fun as last year. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE MALE STRIPPERS?!
I really enjoyed the Baby Lasagna V/S Käärijä rap battle. I have thought a lot about how their songs very, VERY similar. Glad they noticed that too.
thank you Edward af Sillén and Petra Mede for being good company throughout the night. You get dinosaur hugs. Rawr XD
that was it, I believe. Thank you for reading. Free Palestine 🇵🇸
You, dear reader, gets many dinosaur hugs as well <3

The Good, The Bad and the Interesting of ESC Vote 2025.
The Good
75 lots of 12 points were given out last evening (37 from juries, 37 from televoters and one from ROW).
Eighteen different countries received 12 points from somewhere in the voting. The ones that didn't were Norway, Luxembourg, Spain, Iceland, the Netherlands, Malta, Portugal, and Denmark.
Israel received 15 of those; only one of those came from a jury (Azerbaijan)
The next highest lots of 12 went to Austria (8) and then Italy and Greece (7 each), France, Estonia and Sweden (5 each).
Clearly - Israel received the most 12s from the Televoters. Austria had the most 12s from the juries. Germany, Latvia, the Netherlands and Sweden gave exactly these top marks.
Where juries and televoters agreed: Azerbaijan (12 - Israel), Cyprus (12- Greece), Lithuania (12- Latvia), Malta (1 - Sweden), and the most bizarre, Slovenia (12 - Italy, 10- Austria, 7 - Estonia).
The big differences in votes: Armenia to Estonia (televote 12, juries 2), Czechia to Germany (televote 1, juries 12), Greece to Albania (televote 12, juries 2), Latvia to Estonia (televote 12, juries 1), Luxembourg to Israel (televote 12, juries 1), Norway to Austria (televote 1, juries 12).
The Bad
I like to see who was rated last. Here is how that went down:
Tumblr media
Juries and Televoters agreed in Australia, and Denmark (San Marino), Armenia (Azerbaijan).
You'll be pleased to know that there were no countries done dirty by giving 12 and getting last in the jury/televote.
The Interesting
There were three nil point this year. Some may have been expected, others not so.
The closest to breaking the duck was Switzerland. Portugal has them placed at 11th in the televote.
Iceland's best jury place was 13th from both Denmark and Finland.
The United Kingdom's best televote place was 18th from Iceland, Ireland and Malta
If you know others, pls comment.
