I don't....actually have actual photos of them because I cannot draw, and so they live vividly in my mind. I Will Eventually commission someone to draw them though I think. ANYWAY.

Jamir - he's a half-dead (as in, that is his race, homebrewed myself) ranger who isn't wise enough to multiclass (his death took away some of his wisdom). He was human before his death--not the best sort of human, joined the army at a young age because that's all he could do, really. His parents well. He made a deal with someone not so nice and in exchange for their souls, he gained the ability to perform magic; simple things though, nothing too crazy. A few cantrips here and there.

Along the way, the faction of soldiers he's with are sent out to aid a dragonborn clan that's having issues of their own with infighting.

This is where he meets Elias, eventually, and they hit it off pretty much immediately. Jamir is of course, jaded all the hell, he's been fighting for half his life in an army of soldiers who just seem to be making things worse.

Elias gives him a way out, a chance at freedom, because Elias was also looking to somehow distance himself from all the fighting. They make a pact to leave together.

Until Elias's brother Arjhan catches wind of this and kills Jamir.

I can't go too much into Elias's backstory because I haven't delved much into it during the campaign and ofc both my players follow me here haha! But, Elias takes Jamir's body and finds a necromancer, makes a deal with her to bring Jamir back.

She readily agrees and makes sure he understands the consequences of this, of what could happen. The possibilities of Jamir coming back wrong.

Elias accepts these consequences readily.

And he does, of course, come back wrong. He's no longer human, smells of rot and decay and has to constantly drink potions to keep his skin from looking too pale. He has aches and pains despite being practically unkillable now. But, along with his new chance at life, he's also gained more access to magic.

Elias [Redacted] is a dragonborn paladin (he has a family name ofc but it's unknown for now, for a good reason)

is the son of a monarch, a clan leader, and he hates it. His clan is constantly at war with each other, with other dragonborn. with humans. you name it, they have a distrust of most other races, for good reason of course.

Long ago, a curse was placed on this clan, meaning that any children born to them would die. There is no known way to reverse this, until, one day, Elias's brother Arjhan was born.

Arjhan, he had not succumbed to the curse, and no one knows why, but this makes Arjhan a very popular target.

Elias had, for years, felt like he had to protect his brother from anyone. From the weird scientists and magic folk that their father had hired to test Arjhan to see if there was something about his blood that made him different, to the older kids that the two of them grew up around.

Arjhan was, in a way, viewed as the savior of the clan, much to the distaste of Elias.

The campaign actually begins with Elias and Jamir recruiting people to help them find Arjhan haha. At this point in time, there is still no cure to the curse and Arjhan is practically hated by the party (minus Elias and begrudgingly, Jamir--but also like wouldn't u also hate the person who killed you???)

ANYWAY. Elias and Jamir are in love, they are my mid-thirties baby boys who are just tired soldiers who want to rest their head somewhere but can't because they keep getting pulled into bullshit!

(also if you vaguely guessed that Elias's family story sounds eerily like the Krogan Genophage from Mass Effect then u would be correct. Elias is based on Wrex and Jamir is based on male Shepard but with a lil gay twist LMAO)

D&D 5e Character Concept: Sly Sorcerous ‘Cleric’

I’ve been watching a couple of campaigns based around the idea of a theological war against magic, divine vs arcane magic, and divine magic winning. Settings with a hugely powerful central church, where arcane magic is dangerous and endangered. All of which naturally made me think about Divine Soul Sorcerers, who could maybe cheat and try to blend in with their ‘holy’ magic. So. A character concept for that sort of campaign setting?

Arjhan Jharthraxyn, Bishop of Lyyle

A handsome, bearded silver dragonborn, quite tall, and dressed with the restrained elegance of a well-to-do cleric, Arjhan Jharthraxyn, Bishop of Lyyle, smiles politely, and gestures with a ringed hand in welcome.

Bishop. The thing with sorcerers, see, is charisma. A Cha-based class. So silver-tongued. Silver-tongued enough to not only pretend to be a priest, but to climb the ecclesiastical ladder in the process. Is that wise? Oh, absolutely not. But if you’re good at something, be good at something, and why not be richer and more powerful doing it? And Arjhan is such an excellent liar. He was a desperate child born into desperate times, destined to be killed for what he was, but necessity is the mother of audacity, after all. Is that not the saying? He joined the church, the very one that wanted to kill him, as a ‘miracle worker’, and lied through his teeth all the way up to the episcopal seat. If someone catches him now, oh, he’s worse than dead, but for that someone must catch him. And he intends to make that rather difficult.

Because Charisma, see. And I do want to lean into that. I want him to have the necessary skills, Deception, Persuasion, Insight, and I want him to be good at them. So I kind of want to take a level of rogue on him? Purely for the Expertise (okay, and armour proficiency). Deception expertise, Insight expertise. I considered Bard, but they take 3 levels to get it, and yes they also keep spell slot progression and get some interesting extra spells from a bard level, but I’m not looking to go that deep in when all I want is expertise. So. A level of rogue. And I think I might also want the Skill Expert feat later too, throw some Perception expertise in as well. This is one paranoid, deceitful boy, and he doesn’t want to be caught on the hop.

For background, to simulate a bishop, I’m going to mash together the Acolyte and Courtier backgrounds, take the skills (and a lot of the equipment) from Acolyte and the Court Functionary feature from Courtier so Arjhan knows how courts (and likely the church itself as well) work.

For race, I wanted either a white or a silver dragonborn, purely so he could be snidely called a ‘cold son of a bitch’ and have it be entirely literal as well as entirely accurate. Heh. I went with the silver over the white because it fits the ‘holy’ image better, and also metallic dragonborn (as of Fizban’s) get some fun extra breath weapons later on. A cone of incapacitation and/or a cone of ‘knock a crowd the fuck away from me’ seem like things a paranoid bishop might want, for those instances where someone tries to assassinate him in the middle of mass or what have you. Also, again, silver-tongued. A silver-tongued silver dragonborn. Heh.

I want him to be cynical, self-serving, a bit flamboyant. Paranoid, determined to survive and to prosper in spite of everyone around him. A cold son of a bitch. But in terms of his spells …

He had to pretend to be a miracle worker. He had to hide his more arcane leanings. So we’re going to lean a bit on the cleric side of his spell list, pick up Cure Wounds, Lesser Restoration, Guiding Bolt, Light. He had to look holy. The sorcerer side was dedicated to survival, stealth, how to get the fuck out of dodge if everything went tits up abruptly. Shield, Misty Step, Invisibility. But they were hidden, not used in public. His public magic is holy. And he sort of …

He's a cynical, self-serving son of a bitch. But he has the power to heal. And it’s the part of his power that he can use freely. I think that maybe has an impact on him. Not altruism, let’s not read into things here, but sure. He can heal some people on occasion. Kneejerk. By instinct. What of it?

I think I’m going to give him distant spell and subtle spell as his initial metamagics. I don’t think he needs quicken spell, he’s not about attacking, he’s about hit-and-run-the-fuck-away, and Misty Spell has that covered for bonus actions. He needs subtle spell, he’s all about not being caught spellcasting. And I want to give him distant spell because it lets him deploy Cure Wounds and Lesser Restoration (and Invisibility, if he feels like helping someone else get out of dodge) at a distance. Why did he need, choose, to be better at that? Shh. Don’t ask awkward questions.

Maybe not everyone he knew growing up was as fortunate as he was when it came to being able to ‘hide’, disguise themselves, blend in. And it’s everyone for themselves, absolutely do not get him wrong, but … I mean, if an opportunity presents itself to maybe give someone a (surreptitious, extremely well disguised) helping hand, well. Does no harm, does it?

Until it does, of course. But you’ve got to understand, you see, that the game only lasts until it ends. You don’t live your life with the sword of Damocles perpetually over your head without developing a certain amount of fatalism. The game lasts until it ends. You run until they catch you, because they will catch you. What matters is how far you get, and how much you get, how much of everything they wanted to deny you, before that happens.

Wouldn’t it be funny, if he climbed all the way to the top of an organisation that wanted to kill him? Wouldn’t that be just perfectly, bleakly amusing? Let’s try, hmm? Let’s see how far we get before we mis-step.

(What is a bishop doing out adventuring? But I’m imagining him in a more social, cloak-and-dagger sort of campaign, less dungeon delving and more trying to break the power of a cruel church)

Yeah. I’m enjoying this set-up. I think I like him. Arjhan Jharthraxyn. Lying, cheating sorcerous bishop of a church he most decidedly does not believe in. Prince with a thousand enemies. They’ll kill you if they catch you. But first they must catch you. Heh.

Djinni/Genie Otherkin

From time to time I think about this. Mostly because the type of djinn I see within me is from I Dream of Jeannie where they blink with a quick nod of the head, whether with their arms crossed up before them or not. Their power is absolute, like it was for Jeannie in the first season of the TV show. I dismiss the constant dumbing down of both her power and her intellect as the seasons progressed, thanks to network suits who were somehow intimidated by her power. So, yeah, non-canon. What I have come to know, like a form of gnosis, is that I have something like an archetype of Djinni in my most basic soul, or Higher Self. She is the same kind of djinni as in that old 1960s era TV show, blinks with the very same magic-sounds, dresses similarly to Jeannie’s sister, Jeannii (written as “Jeannie II” in scripts, but as a writer I find that too awkward to have a character even say, must less mentally tag it for her), though her Djinni-Color is slightly different. Sea-greens for her, named Erica, a brunette, and of a physical, facial, and clothing-style kind of beauty known only to the Djinn (the most beautiful humans are a distant second in comparison). There is a Hungarian actress who looks almost like Erica, and they share the same first name, with different spellings. I was as shocked as anyone to have that recognition upon first seeing her, but body-doubles are certainly a thing in this world of ours. Erica is my inner Djinni, just as Gryneos is my inner Centaur. He’s definitely a centaur archetype of my Higher Self, so I feel this is at least a thing with me. Makes me wonder how much the concept of archetype is a fact for all Otherkin, too. The other thing all of this makes me ponder is among the I Dream of Jeannie community, just how many fans of the show might also be Otherkin as any of the characters, especially of Jeannie, Jeannii, Mama-Jeannie, Marilla, Aunt Fatima, Jeannie’s possible younger sister, the djinni-wife of her brother and mother of baby Abdullah, and any other djinn of the show I have forgotten to mention. Some might even be Otherkin as humans from the show, such as Tony, Roger, Dr. Bellows and Amanda Bellows. I just have never seen any of the fans ever mention such a thing, so I wonder too if they would be so open as to admit it as we Otherkin have around here. There are other djinn within my Other Lives as those beings, so not all are from I Dream of Jeannie. Most are, but there are others, including the centaur-djinni reality of my avatar here, Arjhan. I know I promised to tell more about him, and I’ll do that eventually. Erica has just been on my mind more intimately lately, which just means that I sense her wanting to be written out of me more often.
