August Wrap Up ✨
I’m not gonna lie, it took me 2 weeks to read just one book because I didn’t want the characters to go away, so I hid reading fanfics (yes, it’s a theme, fanfics help me avoid shit, sue me). And because of this I read a lot of comics or graphic novels to kind of balance things out. As always, I’ll try to not spoil anything, but just in case, spoiler warning.
1. Aristotle and Dante Dive into the Waters of the World - 5/5
This is what took most of my time, I didn’t want to let these boy go, and honestly, I don’t know if I regret continuing after the beautiful ending of the first book because… WHAT THE FVCK WERE THOSE LAST 200 PAGES???? And most importantly, what the FVCK WERE THOSE LAST 10 CHAPTERS??? My heart was doing flips, I was crying like no tomorrow, and I ended up happy. I loved the book, it’s an incredible saga, and it’s so easy to read and follow along. Dante and Aristotle are so lovable, you just want to be there for them, and the topics in this one are just… all I can say is read it. You won’t regret it.
2. The Girl from the Sea - 4.5/5
Did I cry over this high schooler? Yes. Did I question my life because I need more than that ending? Also yes. Did I love the drawings? Obviously. It’s just adorable and queer, and heartwarming, and heartbreaking, and all I want is for these amazing beings to be happy. AND IT HAS SEALS. SEAAAALS. Honestly, I would make this a 5 star, but I need more.I need a sequel, I can’t be left like this.
3. The Boy Who Didn’t Love - 4/5
I now people shit on Wattpad a lot, but I still enjoy the app because it’s what made me fall back in love with reading, and I’m including this Wattpad original story because fvck it, I make the rules. Can someone explain to me why this diagnosed sociopath is a better partner than “sane” people? I was hoping for him to do something to make me hate him, and nothing. I resented the girl a bit, but that is it. They had great communication, he tried to understand her as much as he could, and he sounded hot af when he manipulated people. Maybe I’m the problem.
4. The Sad Ghost Club 2 & 3 - 4/5
I finished these comics (finally) and I loved them. i felt seen. Socks is me, I am Socks, and I have felt a lot of their feelings. It’s just comforting to see the struggles of other people and that you are. Ot alone in your struggles. Its a message I kind of needed after these last few years, so I obviously love it.
5. The Witch Boy Series - 4/5
These are 3 books, The Witch Boy, The Hidden Witch and The Midwinter Witch. I’m sure there will be more, but for now, those are the ones I read. They are adorable. Just out of this world adorable. I know the target audience are middle schoolers, but that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy it. I will show these to my little brother, because I feel like he will like them, and it’s a way of seeing that it’s okay to feel different from others and and sometimes you are not the only different one. Challenge tradition 😤

"I felt him take my hand in his, a hand that held all the secrets of the universe, a hand i would never let go until i memorized each and every line of his palm. I looked up at the painting, the survivors of a shipwreck, fighting the waves of the storm, struggling to get back to the shore, where life was waiting for them."
"I knew why i loved that painting. I was on that raft. Dante was on that raft. My mother and Dante's mom and dad and Cassandra and Susie and Gina and Danny and Julio and Mr. Blocker. And Mrs. Livermore and Mrs. Alvidrez, they were on that raft too. And those who died too soon—my dad and my aunt Ophelia and Cassandra's brother, and Emma's son and Rico, and Camila, all the lost people that the world had thrown away—they were there with us on that raft, and their dreams and desires too. And if the raft collapsed, we would dive into the waters of that stormy sea—and swim our way to shore."
—Aristotle and Dante dive into the waters of the world, page 514 :)
Man i love that book so much 😭

Reading Year 2021: The Second Half
For an overview of the first half of the year, click here.
It’s official, I’ve read 23 books this year, which is a fantastic result considering my previous couple of years… Here’s a quick overview of the ten books I read from July through December!
°

[☆ ☆ ☆ ☆] Darius the Great Is Not Okay by Adib Khorram
As someone who also grew up between two cultures, this book was extremely relatable. And as a bonus, I could learn more about Iran and what live is like there. Although it was a bit exhausting to read the story from Darius’ perspective, I still really enjoyed myself.
[☆ ☆ ☆ ☆] A Heart in a Body in the World by Deb Caletti
Love how the story unfolded little by little. A powerful, important book, especially in the current modern time. Maybe a little slow here and there, but inspirational and motivational nonetheless.
[☆ ☆] Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi
I really REALLY didn’t like the writing style. I thought I’ll get used to it eventually, but unfortunately, that never happened. There are too many weirdly specific descriptions. The way the dialogue was written also wasn’t for me. It’s also repetitive, and on top of all I couldn’t connect to the characters. I liked the plot idea though; the concept is very intriguing. I think this would work much better as a movie or a short tv show for me.

[☆ ☆ ☆] On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong
This one simply wasn’t for me. I’m probably too straightforward and/or too impatient to enjoy a poetic writing style. I also felt extremely disconnected from the characters. That being said, I understand why people like it, and just because I didn’t connect with it doesn’t mean it’s a bad book. I loved parts of it, and there were many beautifully written paragraphs.

[☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆] The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune
I read this book for the first time in January of this year, so this is the first re-read already. Finally, I was able to annotate because I bought a physical copy! Loved it just as much as the first time. I think this will be my comfort read for a long time.
[☆ ☆ ☆ ☆] The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo
This story is written in verse, so I was a bit concerned as it’s not something I’m familiar with, but I had zero trouble with it. It’s very straightforward and easy to follow. There are many gorgeous quotes, and although I wasn’t interested in all aspects of the story, I still loved reading it.

[☆ ☆ ☆ ☆] Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune
Even though The House in the Cerulean Sea quickly became one of my all-time favorite books, I went into this story with no expectations. I think TJ Klune really shines when it comes to characters; they feel very warm and welcoming. Unfortunately, I wasn’t sold on the character development of our main character in this book, and I only liked some parts of the plot. But overall, I loved returning to this enchanting story every time I opened the book again. Also: Hugo gets a 5/5 from me. What a gem.
[☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆] Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz
My second re-read of this book. I last read it six years ago – time really flies… Since the sequel was coming out this month, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to dive (heh...) back into the world of Ari and Dante, and I enjoyed my stay just as much as the other two times. Still an all-time favorite!

[☆ ☆] Aristotle and Dante Dive Into the Waters of the World by Benjamin Alire Saenz
It’s not like I expected this book to be as good as its predecessor, I really didn’t. But wow. What a letdown still. I was bored half of the time and really had to push myself to finish it. It was too repetitive, had too many unnecessary new characters, the protagonist felt very different from before, the plot seemed to be all over the place, and, worst of all, I just didn’t feel anything while reading. I’m kinda sad that I didn’t like it. However, it doesn’t change my love for the first book, that one is still one of my all-time faves!
[☆ ☆ ☆ ☆] The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation Vol. 1 by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu
My first light novel ever. This one is hard to rate, mostly because I already know the story well, seeing as I fell completely in love with it this year through other formats. So, I’m not going into this unbiased. While I enjoyed this first volume immensely, I do have some issues, mostly regarding the pacing (not enough action, too much background information) and the writing style (a lot of telling and not enough showing). Also, a book with 350+ pages to only be divided into seven chapters is not ideal, at least not for me. That being said, I love the humor, I LOVE THE ILLUSTRATIONS – A BIG SHOUTOUT TO THE ILLUSTRATOR, I love the main characters, I love the side characters, I love the plot, I even love the more casually written parts with multiple exclamation marks and whatnot, and thus, I could never rate it anything less than 4 stars!
°
Just as I expected after my midway-post, I took it slower in the second half of the year when it came to reading books. I was aiming for one book per month on average, which I exceeded a little bit. If I can keep this pace for 2022, I’ll be very satisfied!

“The world is not a safe place for us. There are cartographers who came and made a map of the world as they saw it. They did not leave a place for us to write our names on that map. But here we are, we’re in it, this world that does not want us, a world that will never love us, a world that would choose to destroy us rather than make a space for us even though there is more than enough room. There is no room for us because it has already been decided that exile is our only choice. I have been reading the definition for that world and I don’t want that word to live inside me. We came into the world because our parents wanted us. And I have thought about this and I know in my heart that our parents brought us into this world for the purest of reasons. But no matter how much they love us, their love will never move the world one inch closer to welcoming us. The world is full of people who are stupid and mean and cruel and violent and ugly. I think that there is such a thing as truth in the world that we live in, but I sure as hell don’t know what it is. And there’s a shitload of assholes who think it’s okay to hate anybody they want to hate.”

QUEER BOOKS! -recs-
Here's the selection of queer books from my TBR. I don't know how familiar you are with them, since some seem to be less known. I can't vouch for their quality, and towards the end of the list, you'll find the ones that made waves on tik tok and bookstagram.
I want to mention that most of these books are almost absent on bookstagram or not so many people post about them, and I'm totally proud of myself for discovering some of them.
All the young men by Ruth Coker Burks
The swimming-pool Library by Alan Hollinghurst
Lie with me by Philippe Besson
Golden Boys by Phil Stamper
A single man by Christopher Isherwood
Suicide Notes by Michael Thomas Ford

In at the deep end by Kate Davies

🎉Happy New Years!! 🎉
it is the end of this year, which ended up becoming a very productive year for me reading wise (and life wise as well) so i thought i would post what ive gotten around to finishing from january - december of 2022. 🥳
concidering i had a massive reading block in 2021 and didn't end up finishing a single book, i'd say ive managed to pick myself up quite nicely! ive read 9 books and 7 comics (and a heck of a lot of manga as well). Its been a year of reading almost only lgbt books and i think that's helped me out of the slump i was in last year. for some odd reason reading about something im passionate about and can see myself in is really motivating! if anything it inspired me (as well as my friend in uni who runs a bookstagram) to do something with this writing blog of mine. i've not posted here in a while, but now that my exams are over with i hopefully have time to finish some reviews ive been planning 👀
🌸 The books I've finished in 2022 🌸
Circe by Madeline Miller ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin A. Saenz ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A Few Recommendations from the Past Two Years
Each of the Rich in Color bloggers reviews one book or even more every month, but we aren't able to review everything that we read and enjoy. Today I'd like to share some of the books that shouldn't be missed even though we haven't had a chance to review or feature them yet.
Luck of the Titanic by Stacey Lee G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers
Valora Luck has two things: a ticket for the biggest and most luxurious ocean liner in the world, and a dream of leaving England behind and making a life for herself as a circus performer in New York. Much to her surprise, though, she's turned away at the gangway; apparently, Chinese people aren't allowed into America.
But Val has to get on that ship. Her twin brother, Jamie, who has spent two long years at sea, is on board, as is an influential circus owner. Thankfully, there's not much a trained acrobat like Val can't overcome when she puts her mind to it.
As a stowaway, Val should keep her head down and stay out of sight. But the clock is ticking and she has just seven days as the ship makes its way across the Atlantic to find Jamie, audition for the circus owner, and convince him to help get them both into America.
Then one night, the unthinkable happens, and suddenly Val's dreams of a new life are crushed under the weight of the only thing that matters: survival.
Aristotle and Dante Dive into the Waters of the World (Aristotle and Dante #2) by Benjamin Alire Sáenz Simon and Schuster Books for Young Readers
In Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, two boys in a border town fell in love. Now, they must discover what it means to stay in love and build a relationship in a world that seems to challenge their very existence.
Ari has spent all of high school burying who he really is, staying silent and invisible. He expected his senior year to be the same. But something in him cracked open when he fell in love with Dante, and he can’t go back. Suddenly he finds himself reaching out to new friends, standing up to bullies of all kinds, and making his voice heard. And, always, there is Dante, dreamy, witty Dante, who can get on Ari’s nerves and fill him with desire all at once.
The boys are determined to forge a path for themselves in a world that doesn’t understand them. But when Ari is faced with a shocking loss, he’ll have to fight like never before to create a life that is truthfully, joyfully his own.
Huda F Are You? by Huda Fahmy Dial Books
Huda and her family just moved to Dearborn, Michigan, a small town with a big Muslim population. In her old town, Huda knew exactly who she was: She was the hijabi girl. But in Dearborn, everyone is the hijabi girl.
Huda is lost in a sea of hijabis, and she can't rely on her hijab to define her anymore. She has to define herself. So she tries on a bunch of cliques, but she isn't a hijabi fashionista or a hijabi athlete or a hijabi gamer. She's not the one who knows everything about her religion or the one all the guys like. She's miscellaneous, which makes her feel like no one at all. Until she realizes that it'll take finding out who she isn't to figure out who she is.
We Are Not Free by Traci Chee HMH Books for Young Readers
We Are Not Free, is the collective account of a tight-knit group of young Nisei, second-generation Japanese American citizens, whose lives are irrevocably changed by the mass U.S. incarcerations of World War II.
Fourteen teens who have grown up together in Japantown, San Francisco. Fourteen teens who form a community and a family, as interconnected as they are conflicted. Fourteen teens whose lives are turned upside down when over 100,000 people of Japanese ancestry are removed from their homes and forced into desolate incarceration camps. In a world that seems determined to hate them, these young Nisei must rally together as racism and injustice threaten to pull them apart.
Love is a Revolution by Renée Watson Bloomsbury YA
When Nala Robertson reluctantly agrees to attend an open mic night for her cousin-sister-friend Imani's birthday, she finds herself falling in instant love with Tye Brown, the MC. He's perfect, except . . . Tye is an activist and is spending the summer putting on events for the community when Nala would rather watch movies and try out the new seasonal flavors at the local creamery. In order to impress Tye, Nala tells a few tiny lies to have enough in common with him. As they spend more time together, sharing more of themselves, some of those lies get harder to keep up. As Nala falls deeper into keeping up her lies and into love, she'll learn all the ways love is hard, and how self-love is revolutionary.
In Love Is a Revolution, plus size girls are beautiful and get the attention of the hot guys, the popular girl clique is not shallow but has strong convictions and substance, and the ultimate love story is not only about romance but about how to show radical love to the people in your life, including to yourself.
Miss Meteor by Tehlor Kay Mejia and Anna Marie-McLemore HarperTeen
There hasn’t been a winner of the Miss Meteor beauty pageant who looks like Lita Perez or Chicky Quintanilla in all its history. But that’s not the only reason Lita wants to enter the contest, or why her ex-best friend Chicky wants to help her. The road to becoming Miss Meteor isn’t about being perfect; it’s about sharing who you are with the world—and loving the parts of yourself no one else understands. So to pull off the unlikeliest underdog story in pageant history, Lita and Chicky are going to have to forget the past and imagine a future where girls like them are more than enough—they are everything.
Witty and heartfelt with characters that leap off the page, Miss Meteor is acclaimed authors Anna-Marie McLemore and Tehlor Kay Mejia’s first book together.
Dragon Hoops by Gene Luen Yang First Second
Gene understands stories—comic book stories, in particular. Big action. Bigger thrills. And the hero always wins.
But Gene doesn’t get sports. As a kid, his friends called him “Stick” and every basketball game he played ended in pain. He lost interest in basketball long ago, but at the high school where he now teaches, it's all anyone can talk about. The men’s varsity team, the Dragons, is having a phenomenal season that’s been decades in the making. Each victory brings them closer to their ultimate goal: the California State Championships.
Once Gene gets to know these young all-stars, he realizes that their story is just as thrilling as anything he’s seen on a comic book page. He knows he has to follow this epic to its end. What he doesn’t know yet is that this season is not only going to change the Dragons’s lives, but his own life as well.
Are there books that you'd like us to review? We may not be able to get to every book that's published, but we could make an effort if there is something people would like to know more about in the future.
