Thoughts on Mahoyo Movie

hello hello everyone!

how are all my fellow type moon fans and other "people" doing?

good? good!

anyways so i saw some shit takes going around on the net and decided i would write out my opinions on them here. screaming into the void can be real therapeutic especially for a fellow mahoyo fan like myself.

without further ado here i go

AOKO RINFACE?!?!

This is probably the funniest take since it actually is the very opposite: Rin is based off Aoko!

"bUt hOw kIkU? "You poor lost soul may be thinking, and this is actually correct. FSN did, in fact, come out almost a decade before Witch on the Holy Night did. Congratulations, you are right! Pat yourself on the back, champ.

With that being said, Rin is still based off Aoko! Don't believe me? Let's see what Nasu himself has to say on this matter.

NASU: Yes, the heroine with glasses from old "Fate" named Ayaka Sajyou had a rival character who was a total rich-kid, spoiled heiress type. She would look down on you and laugh at you, like Luvia. Her servant was the Lancer. You could say she was the basis for Rin's character. When Shirou snagged the main character position for "stay night", it was this character who transformed into Rin to fill the rival role. We wanted Shirou's rival to be more likeable than the snobby heiress, though, so we took inspiration from Aoko Aozaki, a character Takeuchi and I both like. Azaka, Akiha, and Rin are all Aoko-type characters, but I'd say Rin is the most like Aoko. I really didn't feel like making "Witch on the Holy Night" when we were working on "stay night", so I made the executive decision to create a feminine Aoko. Though I suppose she turned out to be more of a clumsy Aoko than a feminine Aoko... Takeuchi seemed to intuitively understand what I was going for, and his "Fate version Aoko" meshed well with my vision for Rin.

So yes, indeed, Rin was based on Aoko. If you are still confused on how this is possible, you must understand that Witch on the Holy Night is one of Nasu's very first works, written all the way back in 1996, being an almost 500-page novel at the time.

It was obviously shelved for a long while, but the characters within it have remained influential, showing up throughout various different works of Nasu's, but especially Aoko and Touko, who would go on to be important throughout the Nasuverse.

(Also, Soichiro Kuzuki is basically a colder soujuuro and probably even from the same organization.)

Hell, we even have some original artwork from how Aoko looked back then. Compared to how Rin looks now, they don't really look that similar, to be honest.

Now this Aoko, drawn by Takeuchi in TYPE MOON character material all the way back in 2006, after fate/stay night, could be argued to look a lot like Rin, but even that would be a stretch of the imagination (and eyes).

Regardless, what is my point here? Its silly to call Aoko a rin face when:

a) She doesn't even really look like Rin (I'm not even going to bring up Koyama's version of Aoko since that's meaningless).

b) She precedes Rin in both having been created before her and designed before her.

That doesn't mean the movie version of Aoko doesn't look like Rin, because not only does she kind of look like her, but it's probably intentionally meant to provoke these kinds of takes since, in the eyes of most of the audience for Witch on the Holy Night, Aoko might as well be a completely new character.

Honestly? who cares? This "Aoko looks like Rin" business pales in comparison to a bigger worry of mine... How will Ufotable properly adapt Mahoyo?

Mahoyo is a visual novel that has more quiet scenes than action, and will they really manage to adapt that well or lean more into flashy, hyped action scenes?

This worry of mine stems from Ufotables Heaven Feel films, which while I still thoroughly enjoyed, I felt disappointed at all the cut scenes that served to establish the relationship between Illya and Shirou, and likewise the cut scenes between Shirou and Kirei, which are both just as important as Sakura to the main story.

Instead of focusing on the main climax of Heaven's Feel and the climax of the whole FSN, which is Shirou's final battle with Kirei, they extended the Salter vs. Rider fight and made it out to be the centerpiece of the route, which it is in fact not.

Judging from the trailer it will likely adapt up to at least chapter 6 which leaves the rest for maybe another film? possibly even a trilogy which i mean i just don't see happening to be frank but i could be surprised!

Most importantly....

WHERE IS MY FATE ROUTE ANIME DAMN IT??? I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR SO LONG... TEN YEARS AT LEAST!

So yes, that is all I have to say on this matter. I'm both excited to finally get to see Mahoyo in film and for others to get into this series that I so love! It will be great to see others get into it, even if it is possibly a shitty adaptation.

Arcueid and Ciel’s dynamic to me is so interesting not just because of the fucked up lesbian shit where they like to kill each other but also that they’re mirrors of each other too; Arcueid is a vampire that is often viewed as a monster, as “not human” by others yet her actions and emotions are as human as you can get, where she’s just a teenage girl who struggles to not give into her impulses meanwhile Ciel who was originally born as a human ultimately views herself as a “monster” because of her sins when she was possessed by Roa and how she feels like she’s failed to redeem herself of her sins because she’s failed to save so many people, as well as not being able to really die either (again due to Roa) and yet the most tragic part is that they both have so much in common and could’ve worked together if not for the distrust on both sides :(

How do you think each Tsukihime girl would feel about getting pregnant?

Ok so this is what we're doing now huh

Arcueid: Can Arc even get pregnant? I'm going to go with no but even if she can chances are she knows only the vaguest of details about it. Any Arcueid pregnancy adventure is going to involve an awful lot of explaining basic facts of human biology to her while she glosses over major details in favor of fixating on small points most other people don't consider important

Ciel: Ciel is going to cry from joy not so much because she got pregnant but because the fact that she can get pregnant now means she's truly free of her curse. Her body can once again change and grow and even bear children. The next time she sees Noel she goes on and on about how happy she is and how wonderful her life has become and inadvertently pisses Noel off so badly she ruins her entire week

Noel: Noel's first thought on learning she's become pregnant is to be happy at finally achieving a little slice of a normal life, her second thought is to call Ciel and try to rub it in her face as hard as possible, and somewhere distantly in third is the fact that she is in no way ready to become a mother and oh god this is going to fuck everything up

Satsuki: I think she's just normal about it actually. Satsuki's narrative position as a love interest is to be the normal classmate, the girl next door, an ordinary person drawn into this supernatural world by happenstance rather than someone steeped in it like the rest of the cast and this means her reaction to getting pregnant is just normal too

Akiha: Getting pregnant makes all of her self-loathing and belief that she's a monster crash down on her at once. Given the blood of demons that she carries, given what her family has done, is it really right to bring any more of them into the world? Should not the Tohnos simply end with her? Also more than anyone else she experiences pregnancy as total body horror - her frame simply isn't built for it and she finds it both painful and disgusting. Combined with the extreme hormonal fluctuations of pregnancy and their emotional effects I think she tries to kill herself at least once

Hisui: She's really quiet but from the way that she smiles you can tell that she's simply too happy to express herself well. Second most normal about it after Satsuki

Kohaku: She sits staring into space and dissociating out of her mind for six hours straight and then brews herself an abortion drug and quietly takes care of it without telling anyone

Is malignant information in Fate like a Douman-exclusive thing? How does it work separated from him, if it does at all?

Malignant information is not a properly defined term yet despite how old it is and how much presence it had in the original Melty Blood. Nasu tends to mention it with the attached explanation "information entirely harmful to intelligent life", and more recently "what's inconvenient for humans to have while trying to perform good deeds". Really vague stuff, so we gotta look for patterns in our case examples.

The first place to look at is the character the concept was created for. Night of Wallachia. Dead Apostle Zepia, and consequently his successor Dead Apostle Sion. Night of Wallachia's gimmick is that Zepia is no longer corporeal but still exists as a curse that manifests in communities plagued by rumors and ingests the community's blood by giving physical form to their malignant information. The thing about his Tatari forms is that they never overlap with real people. They're either characters who are already dead (Nrvnqsr, Satsuki, the original Zepia Eltnam Oberon) or alternate possibilities of the living characters (Nanaya, Red Arcueid). Falsehood is the keyword with Tatari/Night of Wallachia and malignant information is his keyword for falsehood.

Next, CCC is what gives the most elaborate description of what is malignant information because Nasu loves overexplaining BB's powerset instead of properly showing it. The Mooncell is a recording computer, so its positive operation is about recording the truths of the physical world. The products of curses, lies repeated for personal profit, and rumors without substance are categorized as malignant information and dumped on the unobservable wastehole that is the Far Side of the Moon. There's one particular line that didn't really mean anything back when CCC came out but means a lot now that we know how pruning and Lostbelts work. "The Near Side of the Moon records the correct history of human society, while the Far Side records the horridly offending histories that were discarded." Basically, the BB channels are made with pruned timeline data, apparently.

FGO has a couple scattered mentions of malignant information in Kiara's and BB's NP descriptions, but they're mostly concentrated in Id and its buildup. See this post for the relationship between wasteholes and malignant information. This vengefulness angle is the one usage I struggle to associate with the previous usage of malignant information. Id also finally uses malignant information to refer to Salieri's rumor amalgamation monster status, so that's neat with the Melty original.

But do you know what FGO usage case does tie in with the concepts of falsehood and pruning? That's right, Douman. The mechanism of Douman's immortality is converting himself entirely into malignant information and then copying and multiplying his data body as shikigamis. Heian shows off the differences between the flesh-and-blood Douman and his malignant information copy. Limbo is remarkably dramatic (just like Zepia fr fr) and openly affected by his rivalry with Seimei in a way that reflects the rumors about him better than the reality we're shown in the Singularity. It's a neat mirror of the relationship between Toono Shiki and the OG Melty's Nanaya Shiki, the most iconic malignant information construct. And Douman being CHALDEAS's choice of Servant to explore lost histories like Shimousa in preparation for the Lostbelt makes more sense with the idea that they tie to malignant information information as one of his main magecraft expertises.

Headcannons for Morgan, Sith, Melusine and Barghest with a depressed Master, how would they react to this and how would they help him.(Oh and one question, apart from Fate, would you make commissions related to other Type-Moon franchises? (Tsuhikime, Mahoyo and Knk) because I'm interested in ordering something related to Shiki (R), Arcueid and Aoko, Thanks)

(I will take literally any excuse to write for the Fae, especially Barghest and Baobhan Sith, and sorry that it took so long to get this back to you, I was trying to decide if I should go off my own experiences with Depression or if I should base it around a more… I dunno generalized(?) version of it, oh and to answer your question, I’d be more than open to writing for other Type Moon franchises! Also I couldn't find any good images for everyone sorry!)

Morgan Le Fay

Morgan Le Fay, the queen of all Fae-kind is many things.

A woman who provides the image of someone who is unshakeable and unbreaking.

A woman who has to do so, because that is what is expected of a monarch.

A woman who takes everything vulnerable about her and locks it away from even those closest to her.

Then you called her forward.

Someone who could manage to slip into the box where she keeps her weakness, wounds, and insecurities hidden.

Someone who could see past the masks she wears.

Someone who can hold her and say “It’s okay, it’ll all be okay.” and she’ll believe it.

But one day, she noticed something different about you.

How there was a lack of… fire in your eye.

How you spent more and more time alone, and what time you didn’t spend alone was spent almost entirely with her.

How you lacked energy.

How you seemed subdued.

How you tried to avoid people.

And one day.

How you just broke down as you were sitting down and doing nothing.

In that moment, all of her composure, all of her masks broke like glass.

And not knowing what else to do, she did what you would do when she would do the same.

And despite how her words lacked almost all of her usual power behind them, you believed her.

Because Morgan Le Fay is many things.

Your Queen.

Your servant.

The woman who loves you.

The woman you fell in love with.

And the woman who will do anything to repay the kindness you offered to her when you slipped past her guard and into her heart.

Just so she can continue to see your smile.

Baobhan Sith

Baobhan Sith is the most stubborn person you will ever meet.

In a way that’s part of her charm.

It’s also one of the worst things about her.

She will never admit when she needs help.

No matter how heavy the pressure placed upon her is.

No matter how much strain is placed on her.

She is the future queen after all, she has to be strong.

But her refusal to let anyone in will come back to bite her.

Or it would’ve if someone just as stubborn as her didn’t summon her one day and decide to break through her shell.

Needless to say it took quite a while to get through to her.

But when you did, Baobhan found the world was a much easier place to live in.

Having someone she can trust with everything.

It was liberating to her, not having to hold everything in.

So when she started to notice you holding things in from her she would not stand for it.

She forced her way in, just like you did for her.

Regardless of what you said to her she knew what was lies and what was truth.

And until you and her both left everything bare for each other to see.

She wouldn’t stop. 

Melusine

Melusine is a loner.

She never really vibed with others.

Always on a slightly off wavelength to everyone else.

Perhaps it was because she was a dragon.

Or maybe it was just how she was.

But to connect with another, that was something Melusine desired more than anything.

To have someone willingly share their warmth.

To have a partner who would listen as she gushed about the things she loved, the things she hated, everything.

To have a partner she would listen to as they gushed about the things they loved, the things they hated, everything.

But a desire was all it was.

At least until she met you.

Because when she met you, got to know you, got to see what made you tick.

She knew she had found the partner in crime she had been looking for.

And she also knows when something is wrong with her partner.

Barghest

Barghest is someone who fears getting close to people.

It is something that she has spent her entire life as a Fae Knight avoiding.

Despite her inherent desire to have a group she can lean on and a group who can lean on her.

Eventually she learned to allow the other knights in to a degree but not in the same way she craved to do so with another.

To have a home in someone’s heart and to give someone a home in her heart.

To have someone who she can cook for and to have someone who will cook for her.

To have someone who she can care for and to have someone who can care for her.

It was a hopless dream for a knight like her to have, but still it was a dream she cherished.

Yet one day by sheer luck she happened to meet a certain someone who managed to grab her attention.

You.

You were someone quite interesting to Barghest.

And eventually that interest turned to something more.

To something where she wanted to share in her dream with you.

To something where she wanted to share her heart with you.

And when your heart aches, when you are shaken and the darkness of the world begins to crush you.

Know that you will always have not only one of the Fae Knights, not just a member of the Fang Clan, but someone who you share your heart with and someone you can lean upon no matter what.

Oh and if you even try to think of standing alone, know that Barghest will refuse to allow that to happen.

It is in her nature after all.

I really like Roa and Arcueid's romance in a Google Definition 3 of romance type of way because like. first off. It is romantic. He changed as an individual because of her; his motives became to follow her. And yet it is the love of a single image, a man whose love is ultimately for a being who at that point was no less a machine than he was then.

second off I Love the parallels it has with regular Arcueid/Shiki. Stumbling for the first time. Even though you're the one who made me fall, you'll never be mine. And more importantly, how Roa doesn't love /Arcueid/ Arcueid but rather that idealised image of her, as seen by how he's like 'EW MY MOON PRINCESS CANT BE HAVING EMOTIONS AND SHIT OVER A GUY'. Roa sees Lumina in the remake and essentially shrugs like 'shes gonna annihilate herself lol' while Shiki, despite not loving Arcueid as much as Ciel, still decides he Has to save her. im very normal about them

One of the events (I forget which) had Tamamo Cat take up the camera because "Trust me, you don't want to see what Ushi looks like grinning while covered from head to toe in blood, woof!" I politely disagree and would like to request an image of exactly that.

smut, fionn/group - fionn very nicely takes care of his knights' stress. exactly as it says. i want fionn being a good nice slut for his knights of fianna, because it's hard work, you know, and it's good to keep morale up, and surely they deserve a reward for all they've done, and it's definitely not just an excuse to get some contact in after traveling for months and being away from a nice warm bed with a pretty girl in it for so long. diarmuid is an obvious must, but as for the other knights, you can do whatever you want! toss in whatever headcanons you might have about 'em. i'd especially love to see goll mac morna, with his contentious relationship with fionn and how that might make any physicality between them tense.

He is so confused and angry about all of this. Guda keeps essentially going “I can fix him” (not romantic, just in typical Guda fashion) in spite of his obvious warning signs. His powers are severely limited except for when he uses his Noble Phantasm, and he doesn’t know what a Noble Phantasm is so he thinks he’s been weakened forever (until he figures out how to use it ala Mash did) So many of the people here don’t know who he is, so they aren’t scared of him. At least a lot of the evil Heroic Spirits want to hang out with him.

This is mostly an art prompt (but writers are always welcome!): Crossover with Final Fantasy 14, please interpret your fave servant as if they were from that game! What class would they main, what race would they be? go wildddd

well these are my the type moon stuff i have read or watched or whatever so far. this is my opinion only so its inherently correct argue with the wall or touch grass as the youth say SO here it goes drum roll

boring as shit. no joke im sorry its just booty cheeks but of the not sexy kind. its beyond mid its so mid i cant even act like i enjoyed it. it has an interesting concept and world sure but everything else is doo doo butter.

only good part is nero being hot asf and ig whatever servant there is because i only used nero (lmao i aint playing it all over again) she was funny at times

see shes hilarious at times... im sure CCC will change my mind... right? it has sakura what am i saying its PEAK

overall fgo is alright but some parts of it is straight up incredible HOWEVER all of it is seriously held back by being a gacha mobile game and has to work around that limitation

also it has barghest whom i absolutely adore

WITCH ON THE HOLY NIGHT

now this is peak. the most gorgeous tm work by far i have to say its simply an incredible read all around. even tsukire did not look or work or sound as good as mahoyo did even tho it came out almost ten(?) years after

on the story front i loved it too with a special shoutout to soujuuro being one of my favorite characters in TM (i say this often not my fault type moon keeps releasing bangers)

however mahoyo has two issues for me:

the story is clearly incomplete: i dont mean its just nonsense or whatever but when nasu said its the first of a trilogy you can just feel that in the story with alot of things being left in the air. this wouldnt be an issue really if mahoyo 2 wasnt basically dead....

i didnt vibe with the slice of life scenes as much as i usually do in nasu works: this isnt a flaw in the story more so i just didnt like em idk how else to word that

mahoyo is a great read however and i highly highly recommend you read it or else

TSUKIHIME (original version)

ok fr tho its actually incredible and you should read it right the fuck now

all of the characters are simply chefs kiss. while the visual novel is incredibly dated and the art is even worse you have to understand this is nasu and takeuchis first ever visual novel made on a barely existing budget.

boy do they make up for that.

the vn is split into two with a near side and far side.

while the near side is really good with arcueid and ciels route (ignore how ciel was actually really fucked over even in her own route its laughable and my girl deserved better) the far side is so much more better and really is where the soul of tsukihime and shiki the main character lies

i cba to review it properly besides saying PLEASE READ IT RN or ill cry and you dont wanna see that do you....

FATE STAY NIGHT

what is there to be said about such a masterpiece? what else could be written about fsn that hasnt been written before? i am but an ant in the shadow of the giant that is FSN only seeking some crumbs to feed and live off of. idk what that means but it sounds cool.

FSN is simply tms best work all around. while i prefer tsuki over it and find the tsuki side of TM more interesting FSN overall is much stronger on most fronts but especially its main characters

Shirou emiya is simply the goat nothing else to be said tbh

this vn completely changed my opinion on some characters especially illya who went from someone i was kinda 50/50 on to adoring her overall

TSUKIHIME REMAKE

im not a fan of remaking classics on the level of tsuki. with all its flaws i still find the original to be good enough to not need a remake...

UNTIL I READ THE REMAKE

this is how you do it folks. the story was elevated on nearly every level and if it was the complete story id say its the best ever in existence ever forever fr. its just that good.

there are three things i really want to point out:

while maybe goin overboard i really liked the buffs all the characters received and in general the whole worldbuilding is so much better now with idea bloods and principles and vampire hierarchies and arcueid inflation scenes (heh) its just epic

ciel got a so much better route that actually feels like a ciel route and not just arcueid route 2 electric bugaloo (and getting fucking cucked)

noel is peak

this is peak type moon and when red garden comes out it will be even BETTER especially with satsuki route because satsuki deserves it

there are some other short stories i havent mentioned like garden of avalon, notes, MAGNITUNING (look it up you wont regret it) its all great and worth the time of reading

eventually i wanna play CCC and read some other stuff like maybe prillya DDD, fgo jp like lb7 traum and whatnot

Welcome to the Good, the Grand, and the Ugly.

This is a fan driven anonymous submission/confession blog, dedicated to whatever discordant, belligerent opinions you have about your FGO blorbos, the game, the devs, or the fandom at large. While there should be love within the fandom for the body of work it's about, some hate and criticism is healthy for appropriately enjoying media. If you've ever encountered something related to FGO that makes you want to scalp someone, this blog is for you.

Absolutely no bigoted comments talking about any aspect of a character’s identity, even if it’s “positive” (e.g., calling a brown/dark skinned character “choco”.) You will be blocked. This applies to the replies, as well as the submissions themselves.

No sexually charged confessions about underaged characters.

Adult characters that are child-like (Melusine, Chiyome, Hans, etc.) are allowed, but comments expressing discomfort over them being viewed in a sexual light are also allowed.

Criticisms of fandom are allowed, but no name-dropping people.

Criticisms of a specific subset of fans, such as fans of a certain character or characters, is allowed, but either keep the complaint simple and generic (e.g., "I can't stand Arcueid fans") or explain why you are bothered (e.g., "I think Saber fans are obnoxious because they misinterpret her character"). The onus needs to be on how YOU are being made to feel, as opposed to simply calling the fans shitty or brain-rotted.

Criticisms that are fact-checked to be wrong, ex., saying that one character in a certain story arc said something annoying but it was actually another character, will be deleted. This also applies for outside FGO or any of the visual novels themselves; criticisms about fandom metrics, ex., saying how annoying it is that one character has more fanart/fanfiction than another, only for it to be found out that the "other" character is the one with more fanart/fanfiction, will also be deleted.

Criticisms complaining about a specific Fate/FGO or Type-Moon related artist's work outside of any mainline games, such as a picture posted to social media or one in a material book, need to either be linked outright or explicitly specified in order for it to be found. While every avenue is checked to find the appropriate picture, not everything from Type-Moon is easily accessible, even if it's been uploaded to the internet.

Try to keep your confessions succinct. It’s fine if you want to take a character’s throbbing knot or see them impaled on ten swords, but don’t make it too detailed, and aim for under 200 words.

If you disagree with a post, you are highly encouraged to reply to it instead of sending another confession about it. While confessions that are replies to other confessions can and will get posted, if it starts a chain of people continuously replying, those replies may be deleted. Replies and reblogs to the post themselves are highly encouraged.

Confessions will be put onto the images as-written, with spelling and grammar errors intact, but the alt-text will have spelling errors fixed.

Spoilers are not tagged and spoilers will be posted, but in certain instances, like with Samurai Remnant, if a servant's true name is only revealed later in the story and they are referred to within the fandom with different titles (such as the servants in Samurai Remnant being named "remnant saber" or "remnant archer"), they will be tagged as such for convenience's sake.

Me going insane about parallels between Tsukihime and Lostbelt 2

Okay, so straight to the point Surtr and Ophelia's relationship is meant to parallel and be the reverse of Shiki and Arcuied's relationship. So for the superficial stuff, both situations involve literally two individuals who form a connection due to a mystic eye that causes one of them to change their outlook in a profound manner and fall madly in love with the other. Shiki and Arcuied met due to Shiki's own instincts taking over, which led to him using his mystic eyes to cut Arc. This impact on Arc was so profound that it basically changed her personality. For Surtr and Ophelia, due to Ophelia's mystic eyes, she met lostbelt Surtr before any of the events of the lostbelt. That moment was such an impossibility that it became so profound for Surtr that he desperately wanted to do anything for her as thanks.

But since we're past the superficial stuff, this is where all the differences lie. Because while these events, while similar, only truly apply traits and abilities, these characters are not who they are. Shiki isn't Ophelia, and Surtr isn't Arcueid. But for the two humans, they do have different mystic eyes, which reflect their own actions. For shiki from his own understanding of life and its simple fragility he wants to always attemping to never be passive even in situation where even his own memories are a lie to him and abandoned any connection he had with his former family because of what he vaules. Ophelia, on the other hand, is so indecisive because her family's training stole her agency. In a twist of fate, a person can force another to follow a certain path with her mystic eyes, said person have no decisiveness of their own. Other parallels are what they value, how they treat their partner's predestined path, and how they deal with the mistake they made.

For Arcueid and Surtr, while they do have parallels, like them being both super weapons made by the world using (supposedly) blueprints from an alien species, The most important part is how much that moment affected them. While I would hesitate to use the remake in this thesis (even though it's like the whole reason why I started writing this idea), it's better to show a clear example of the difference between the two. To put it in layman's terms, as a machine, Arcuied is way too broken, and Surtr isn't broken enough. With Arc in the Ciel route, she was forcing herself to become human, which is clearly not good for her; she was basically going against her own functions. But with Surtr, despite wanting to do anything for Ophelia, it just kept on going back to burning the world at the end. He was still the ending of Ragnarok and could never truly stray away from that, even till the end.

Anyway, there's more to get into in Lostbelt 2, like how Napoleon is reverse Ciel or how hilarous it is that Brynhild technically takes on the role of Roa, and how her relationship with Sigurd is reverse reverse Shiki and Arc. Or how Ophelia's endgame is becoming Shiki technically. Or-

What changes did they make to Shiki and Ciel's dynamic in remake? (And what do you think of them?)

In the doujin release, Shiki and Ciel start as acquaintances from the same school. No previous opinions. Later, the 17 Pieces incident happens and Ciel's route is unlocked by Shiki immediately accepting the weight of his sin instead of dismissing the outlandish event. Ciel finds him and saves him from his personal darkest hour with some generic Church platitudes about how death isn't atonement and Shiki must make amends with good deeds instead of running away from the burden of his sin.

The payoff to this is Ciel revealing her past as Roa and her ultimate goal of killing Roa as a means to end her undeservedly long life. Shiki (made into the current Roa host) fights back against Ciel and their conflict is solved by him repeating her generic Church platitudes to her, coming from the mouth of the only person whom she can relate to on the trauma of Roa's presence inside them and with the sincerity of someone who internalized her lies, causing Ciel to finally believe her own lessons too.

The main difference in the remake is that instead of Shiki starting off without established options for Ciel's kind schoolgirl volunteer mask, he's much more of a simp, for the lack of a better way to phrase it. The idea of Shiki saving Ciel by engaging earnestly and passionately with the words she didn't sincerely mean changes from the exclusive focus of the important part to something present in every aspect of their relationship, which makes Shiki's status as the only one who personally knows what Ciel's been through less relevant to it.

Ciel always was Shiki's best relationship by a really wide margin and I don't think the Remake's material damaged what made their dynamic work but it did dilute it with a lot of additional threads I feel nothing about. Shiki's new characterization takes some getting used to since he's not this immediately forward and devoted to anyone else. I still love them as a pair, but I can no longer imagine them ending up as the best couple among the six again.

And this general idea of making the girl stop hating herself by showering her mask with love and then showering her true face with the exact same love because the reveal doesn't make Shiki see her as a different person is something that would have worked better with Kohaku.

If anything, I feel like their new dynamic is much more of a benefit to Noel's characterization than to either of the two because Shiki's intense, outspoken, and apparently uncritical affection for Ciel paints him excellently as everything Noel would want for herself. But Rainbow At Night's writing in general is very dedicated to making Noel its best character.

Overall, I feel like I'd been more satisfied if her remade route kept all of their interactions as they were, only removing the attempted NTR subplot by replacing all of Arcueid's screen time with our good Noel content. Have Arc straight up leave believing her job to be done on day 6 after she kills SHIKI, unaware that Roa leaped to the other Toono Shiki. Still leaves with a final boss furiously jealous of Ciel if anyone cared about that, but better because Noel's jealousy has a more meaningful past and extends so much beyond Shiki.

You ever think about how both Arcueid and Ciel wanted in some way to just be “normal” and have a normal life as a teenager, how Arcueid is fascinated when she’s at Shiki’s school and she finds enjoyment in the most simple things like movies and fast food and just immediately accepting Shiki as someone she wanted to be friends with despite hating him for committing such an act of cutting her up, because even this seemingly human guy treated her as human and not the vampire princess that killed Roa over and over again or the monster they couldn’t trust that Ciel and the church saw her as—

Or how Ciel reveals how much she wanted to be a normal student among her classmates, and no matter how much she claimed for it to be a lie so she could capture Roa who was in Shiki, she genuinely wanted to be friends with Arihiko and Shiki and eat lunch with them every day and run a mundane tea ceremony club where she ate her favorite curry, how the promise she made at the end with Shiki was simply “I was going to come back even though I said I wasn’t, I just want to be students with you two, I want the normal and loving life that was brutally stolen from me back then” how Ciel wanted to be human and die so badly again to be free from the curse of immortality due to Roa possessing her and the church experimenting on her

You ever think about (AT LEAST THIS IS WHAT I KNOW SO FAR ABOUT HIM) how Shiki wanted to be a normal student so fucking badly too, how despite the major accident he went through as a child where his other brother literally tried to kill him and his father lied to him about his whole childhood he still lives on in his life, but when he comes back to all that and when his life is all turned on its head because of Roa once again, he freaks the fuck out and starts committing these horrible acts of violence where he becomes painfully self aware of how he’s being, and that turns into how much he wants to die as a result of being like this and how he keeps thinking back to his promise with his sensei—and how he keeps breaking it with every act he commits when he takes off his glasses and hurts the people he loves instead of the real enemy that he needed to fight that was within him all along

You ever think about in this crazy ass universe with mages and death powers and vampires and so many other otherworldly things, a lot of the major characters simply yearn to be normal and live a normal life as a human? Not tainted by the trauma that affected them as a result of these events, all because of FUCKING ROA and his ass that just doesn’t want to die 😭

Week 2 of my daily art project: OCtober!

this week was definitely more rough than the last one. i still feel happy with a lot of these designs, but drawing these were a lot more rough than the last week.

costume reasonings under the cut!

-ive shown off Broken Sky before this, she was chosen as Zeus from Hades because shes a thunderstorm of a woman, being dressed as the god of thunder just made sense for me.

-Viola and Martha are basically a lesbian duo who love eachother dearly, so having them dress up as what would basically be their inverses was fun. so yeah, luigi and king boo.

-Pcal is a dumbas catgirl i made for my girlfriend. so obviously i draw the dumb catgirl as the iconic dumb cat girl, neko ar- I MEAN! Arcueid Brunestud. shes an iconic fighting game character and i just thought itd be fun to represent her. im totally not a dipshit with this choice no. totally not.

-Johnathan Ilk is this weird guy. like scary weird. hes not ultimately trying to be harmful, but hes fucked up. he also has an inate connection to the forest, as he skins several dozen animals a day. making his costume be Leshy from Inscryption was basically a perfect idea in my head.

-okay so. chese is weird because its so specific. its a deltarune au character, ill explain. Chese is a robot, and its name stands for Chaos and Havoc Era Service Engine, so itsjust. a chaotic robot! making it based on Junkil REDUX, a robot body form (i think) whos also about chaos and whatever, it was a good idea in my head! i think.

-Megan and Souble are also a duo but its the same kinda inverse situation. i chose the two characters from clash of clans of all games, because one is a red cloaked black haired human thunder wizard and another is a beige clothed goblin rogue, but megan is a red cloaked red haired human rogue, and souble is a beige clothed goblin weather wizard! it was a fun inversion i liked. also fun fact, i actually used the color pallates of the opposite characters for their outfits in this drawing! megan has the colors of souble's outfits, and souble has the colors of megan's outfits!

-day 14 is the weekend, and on the weekends im planning to draw the ocs of my friends, so i chose a discord friend of mines bee oc. she asked for Jelly to be drawn as Buzzinga from My Singing Monsters, so it was p fun to. do this. i dont got much to say here tho.

Gotta say, While I loved all the characters in Dark Sun, I'm glad they haven't added the Big bad of the Crowned Dead Route to anything afterwards, Even for Fate their power is just INSANE, I'm just not sure how well they'd work out anyway, given the Crown literally can not exist without the death of Zaphon during Raziel's Rebellion and unless im mistaken, that doesn't happen anywhere else.

Still kinda hoping they add Saber to Grand Order tho, their final stand in the Last Overlight Route was AMAZING, even if only happened in a Dead End.

Yeah it's very much a case of "only through THESE VERY SPECIFIC CIRCUMSTANCES is the Crown able to exist" I know they managed to bring Arcueid to fgo and all but... I really don't know how they could bring the Crown back in literally any later work without seriously nerfing and/or uwufying them.

I'm holding it out for Saber tho, if only because i NEED to see if she gets voice lines for blackbeard. She caught a bunch of pirates in life I think it'd make for some fun interactions.
