M: Got any premises on the back burner that you’d care to share?

More than a premise, I have a White Collar/Forever fic that is half-written but half abandonned, cause I got 1- stuck on the plot. 2- distracted by a different fandom. But it's a case fic about Henry's flintlock that will involve both teams and I'm quite happy with the half I've written. :-) The good news is, I think I have figured what was wrong with my plot. The bad news is, it requires lots of re-writing...

I also have a couple of Zorro fics I'm working on/have ideas for. (When I say "couple" I mean "way too many" LOL). One where Zorro would be caught and unmasked. One where Diego has to save the day as Diego. One about how his father figured it out (following canon). But I'm actually working now on a Rosarita/Diego one.

S: Any fandom tropes you can’t resist?

I think it depends on the fandom. In Forever and Zorro, where the main character has a secret, it's obviously anything involving them putting their secret at risk (out of love, heroism, etc...). In fandoms where the hero is sort of a tragic figure (like Person of Interest), it's all the fluff/comfort/love they don't think they deserve. For other fandoms, it can be post-canon reunion fics.

Glicht tried to bring himself present again, but it was a struggle merely to breathe through the fresh wound in his back—aching with every heartbeat—and the older ones, miraculously healed as though by a full Visiting, but still sore and stiff.

Harsh

When Lohak remained silent, Glicht let out a harsh laugh. “It ain’t like you didn’t know I was a mask.”

Quite

Lohak looked over in surprise to see Thack chin-to-chest, dead asleep sitting up on his stool. Looked quite a trick; Glicht wondered if it came from a long history of doing the same on noleback.

But Jack didn't mind. It was mindless, repetitive work with no risk of him falling off something or getting whacked with a rope or drowning in canvas, and it didn't require him to hold up a conversation, his thoughts mostly still running in that wordless way they did when he was a wolf. Translating English would take more focus than he had to spare at the moment. * ^ From a still-untitled WIP, 19-year-old Jack Russell runs away to join the circus (he has his reasons and they're actually decent ones), where he befriends not-yet-cursed Johnny Blaze. Shenanigans ensue, laced with angst and heavy foreshadowing. (The working title of the doc I started writing this in is 'Dork Side of the Moon,' but in my head I think of it as either 'Circus AU' or 'The Jack and Johnny Show.' Proposed titles include '8 Nights Under the Big Top' and 'Entry of the Gladiators,' the latter of which I like because I enjoy making oblique references but I'm worried it will set readers up to expect cage fights, of which there are none)

Archaeopteryx, a new beginning.

One of my favorite dinosaurs and fossils, Archaeopteryx lithographica. I hope I get to see it in person someday <3

The missing link between dinosaurs and birds, an extinct animal shedding light on such a modern matter. It has always fascinated me. The evolutionary success of so many animals, still present and alive today, coming from millions of years ago.

Even before it was found, scientists expected some animal like Archaeopteryx to have existed, so here archaeopteryx stands in the middle, glowing, as if saying "I'm here! I existed! We are still around, in stone, and in the sky!"

I am submitting this drawing to the art contest Paleoartapalooza, held by the Museum of the Rockies. Wish me luck 🤞

FanFic Ask Game: F, H

F: Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.

“I’m not her anymore I can’t be Claire anymore!”

“Okay. You’re not Claire anymore.” Jim took a step towards her. “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet. So Claire would, were she not Claire called, retain that dear perfection which she owes without that title.”

She either smiled or grimaced as her breathing evened out by a fraction. “You’re messing up my lines.”

“Give me a break, it’s been nearly a year since the play.” He took another step towards her. “So, doff thy name, and, for thy name, which is no part of thee, take all myself.”

“You wouldn’t call me but love if you knew.”

“Knew what?”

“What she did to me. I’m not me anymore, I can’t be.”

“Claire, I should have told you this before you made the giant portal, but I love you. I just, you know how I’m bad with words and speaking my feelings. I should have told you sooner, and I regretted not telling you because I thought you had died before I could tell you.” Claire flinched, but Jim kept speaking. “Nothing that Morgana has done to you could change the fact that I love you.”

Claire took a step back, squeezing her eyes shut and tucking her chin between her collarbones. She shook her head as she made fists in her hair. “Well, you’re too late to tell me before I died. She killed me, and she brought me back over and over again. I’m not me anymore, I’m just inhabiting the corpse. You can’t love me. You can’t love the person I’ve become! No one can!”

From a liar by your side

I like this because it’s a blend of vastly different styles of speaking. Jim is, for the most part, eloquent, (mis)quoting Shakespeare and soothing Claire. His sentences often combine two clauses in a grammatically correct way as to show this eloquence.

Meanwhile, Claire is having a mental breakdown. In canon, Claire is a perfectionist and the most academically inclined of the three main humans of Trollhunters, but between the weight of her mental and physical trauma and the aforementioned mental breakdown she’s having she can’t be the so-called “perfect” girl she used to be. Her speech patterns are meant to reflect this. Her first line here isn’t grammatically correct; it requires a semicolon to not be a run-on. This was done deliberately to emphasize her mental state as well as how quickly she says the line. There is no pause for a semicolon, comma, or period. Instead, her words are italicized to imply they’re said more forcefully and perhaps even more quickly. Likewise, there are multiple sentences that should have semicolons as opposed to commas; I interpret the pauses for semicolons as longer than the pauses for commas. Unlike Jim, most of her sentences are simple sentences with only one clause. Those that aren’t are often the combination of a three word sentence and a slightly longer sentence. In the end of this snippet, she is shouting once more because her emotions are running high.

H: How would you describe your style?

Bittersweet-to-100% dark prose, though I’d say that more applies to the fact that even my fluff alludes to darker themes than my actual writing style. Otherwise, my style often changes to suit the scene of the fic, as can be seen in the above dialogue snippet changing style between the two speakers.
