"the missed potential of arc v is how it fucked up the ending/didnt expand on the yu boys or bracelet girls/didnt last long in the xyz dimension/ didnt do whatever-" shut up. the true missed potential of arc v is that it did not fully capitalize on how fucked up the dynamic between yuya, serena and shun could have been. shun is hanging out with two people who look exactly like the two most important people in his life but one of them killed his best friend and the other one was part of the organization that destroyed his life. yuya is stuck facing the ire of someone who is incredibly justified in his anger and at the same time barely understands how it even happened while also around serena who shares yuzu's face and is here Because yuzu sacrificed herself to let serena escape. serena has to deal with the fact that both of them wish she was someone else and for all intents and purposes they are stuck with her and she hates the situation just as much as they do but they'll die if they don't work together, and its not easy when you look like ones childhood friend/girlfriend and the other ones sister. like immediately after learning about the dimensional counterparts they are fully 100% in the know for which is which and yeah they have different clothes + hairstyles but like you're telling me that they didn't ONCE accidentally misname yuya or serena in a fit of rage or sadness? how can shun be angry at serena when shes the spitting image of ruri who was kidnapped. how dare yuya wear yutos face and steal his monster, hes not the best friend shun has been through hell and back with. yuya grieving over how yuzu was taken and some part of him cant help but blame serena, which is even worse because she looks just like yuzu. yuya having to actively cooperate with shun who wishes he were dead. serena once again being minimized by the people around her only instead of the professor trying to recreate the image of his daughter, shes stuck with two guys who cant even look her in the eyes for wildly different reasons. its a complete and total clusterfuck of projection, unhealthy coping, grieving, maybe selfcest?, and it could have been everything.
every argument on arc-v's missed potential shut up forever you will never be THIS missed potential.

I wouldn't have nearly as much beef with 4Kids/4K Media dubs of Yugioh if they didn't prioritise jokes over staying true to the spirit of the shows. Especially Zexal onwards. DM/GX/5Ds had their own issues, like the unfinished dubs and hacking the themes and characters in GX S3, but the way Zexal/Arc V/VRAINS become quip shows really bothers me.
Characters are watered down and lose their nuance, themes are simplified for a younger audience, and you get the feeling sometimes the localisation team aren't confident the shows can keep people's attention as they are if the characters aren't cracking jokes. The dubs aren't awful 100% of the time but they're just bad enough in a way that makes me mad.
It's not even like I wish the dubs didn't exist, for the sake of accesability they're a priceless resource and a lot of people wouldn't have given Yugioh a shot without it. I just wish they were different. I want people who don't want to or for any reason can't watch Yugioh subtitled to be able to enjoy the same stories I love so much.

Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V Episode 1 "Dub-Uncut" (ENG Dub w/ JP OST) WIP #2 | The Action Duel!/BelievexBelieve (Upload Without Copyright-Proofing Bars)
Another look at my ARC-V Episode 1 "Dub-Uncut" take! This time, taking a look at a much-improved prologue and my final fully subbed version of BelievexBelieve, which I might've previously shown off when I was going to attempt ARC-V subbing a few years back but has been revamped since (largely because I lost my final sub file after a drive fail in 2022, but thankfully I had an earlier version of this and the ED subs I'd done to work off of; huge shoutout to Jake759 on NAC for setting up the stylings for the credit subs to replicate their lighting-up--though I wish I still had the title card subs he styled for me 😭 I had to redo that from scratch and it looks good, but not as good as he'd set it up lol). The revamped OP subs include my revamp of the edit with Sawatari's cards being hidden as V1 of this OP with that was never released textless officially, and I also still had my edit during the chorus to translate "KABA CARNIVAL" sliding in under the Hippo Tokens to "HIPPO CARNIVAL."
For the prologue, my previous teaser used an AI'd line using the voice of Pokemon's narrator (under 4Kids), but that had admittedly been more of a placeholder/proof-of-concept; over the past week, I looked into commissioning a voiceover artist to record the lines instead--for this and the rest of the prologues in ARC-V!--and I'm very happy with the results here. Shoutout to @mattsindt over on Fiverr for his services! 😄
Lemme know what you think! I'll be working on some more finishing touches, so expect some more teasers for the next while as I get it all polished.

If you are going to be mean about the dubs in general just simply don't do that

I let my instant thoughts on Ruri and Shun's names in the Korean dub of Arc-V sink in for a moment. Although the Korean dub doesn't specify their last name, their Korean first names "루리 (Ruri)" and "루마 (Ruma)" go so well with "이 (Yi)", one of the most common Korean surnames.
Meaningwise, the first names and the hypothetical surname combined sound fabulous. "이루리 (YI Ruri)" sounds similar to "one shall prevail" in Korean, and "이루마 (Yi Ruma)" to "I promiss I will prevail" in Korean.
I discussed this with another Korean Yugioh fan and found I wasn't the only one who have thought of this idea. I hope this theory is true😆☺️

hey im interested in getting into ygo do u have any recs or recommended orders of reading/watching theres a lot from the looks of it on anilist so i was wondering about your preferences o:
ANON I ABSOLUTELY DOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I'm only about halfway through the sequels (i just started arc-v) so I'm not like the most knowledgable person in the world but I can give you my personal recs. COME CLOSER!!!!!
First of all, every yugioh series is totally independent from each other (sort of - gx is set directly after dm and leans on its worldbuilding quite a bit, and 5ds takes place in the same universe as well though a bit further in the future, but you can watch them on their own with no problem) so if there's one in particular that grabs you there's nothing stopping you from jumping straight to it - that being said I've been watching all of the anime in release order (ygo dm -> gx -> 5ds -> zexal -> arc-v (i am here) -> vrains -> sevens -> go rush) and I've been enjoying it a lot. I also wouldn't recommend watching arc-v in particular without having watched the ones before it as it probably won't really have any impact for you. Now for specific recommendations (in order) !!!! SORRY THIS GOT REALLY LONG.
yugioh manga - START HERE !!!!! the original story by kazuki takahashi. high school boy inherits an ancient magical artifact containing a spirit that's really, really good at playing games (and inflicting psychological torment on bullies). I have to give it a warning for some shonen-typical creepiness towards female characters in the early chapters, but it's REALLY worth reading and it's a story that's so near and dear to my heart. this is the fastest and easiest way to start loving yugioh. Its worth noting that the original ygo manga is the ONLY manga (afaik) that tells the same story as its anime + i haven't read any of the others aside from a little bit of the gx manga, so the rest of my recs are anime-only
(optional) yugioh season 0 / 1998 / toei - a one-season anime based on the early manga chapters. if you like the horror vibes of the manga you'll enjoy this a lot. really fun 90s animation with a killer soundtrack, but generally not considered """canon"""
yugioh duel monsters - this is the one most people watched as a kid. it's an adaptation of the manga, but with most of the early chapters cut out so as to get straight to the card games + some extra arcs added in. this is most people's favorites and the most popular! you can also watch this in lieu of the manga, but you will be missing a LOT of the early story or experiencing it in condensed form (and the plot of ygo dm is already patchy At Best).
yugioh gx - direct anime sequel to ygo dm. boy goes to gamer school to become the next king of games + high school shenanigans ensue. gx is a really charming, goofy romp with a super lighthearted s1, an interesting s2 and a shockingly engrossing s3. s4 (the last 25 episodes or so) never got dubbed in english so if you're a dub enjoyer like me you'll have to switch to subs to get the full story
yugioh 5ds - direct sequel to gx, though further in the future than gx was to dm. card games on motorcycles are real and so is class warfare and the surveillance state. iirc this is the only yugioh anime that was rated 4+ - it has a slightly more mature tone but there's still plenty of lighthearted fun to be had. Really strong s1 with a second season that falls off a little bit, at least to me, but is still absolutely worth watching. s2 is missing a number of episodes in the english dub, so again if you're a dub enjoyer you will find yourself quite confused by the end. its probably worth watching s2 entirely sub-only (something i still need to do)
yugioh zexal - the first of the sequels that is possibly set in a different universe entirely (or just the really distant future). middle school boy gets a magic necklace from his dad that has an alien inside. zexal is a lot of peoples favorites and now that I've watched it I GET IT. Really strong story + pacing from beginning to end and a really endearing cast of characters. It's silly and goofy and fun but DAMN DOES IT COHERE.
yugioh arc-v - the first of the sequels that is DEFINITELY set in a different universe entirely. this is the one I'm watching currently so i don't have much to say about it yet GET BACK TO ME ON THIS ONE. this one boy's dream is to become the greatest clown who ever lived (tragic) (inspiring)
INHALES LOUDLY. that was probably more info than you wanted BUT I HOPE THAT HELPED AT LEAST A LITTLE BIT? again I recommend reading the original ygo manga first and i think that will give you a good idea of whether you are down with the yugioh silliness or not. It's important to remember that this is a very silly anime series about card games but like. As long as you can buy into the worldbuilding and accept that this is just How Things Are in the world of ygo, it's suuuuuuuch a fun world to sink your teeth into.

Something that really bothers me is people being mostly sub watchers and then seeing a dub episode and complaining that the characters are "totally butchered". That's because there's a whole show of building that character in a slightly different flavor, y'all.
Actually, correction, something that really bothers me is people complaining about the yugioh dubs.

Reason why I love Dub over the Sub?
The characters feel like people in the dub rather in the sub.
Like from what I have seen, the sub more or less treats them like characters rather than people. They don't sound like actual people, but characters. It isn't bad, but it isn't good either.
In the dub, call their dialouge cringe all you like it, but it feels more natural and they even give them flaws, minor or not. Heck, there was a whole ass conversation about how hot dogs should be cooked and one of the characters straight up said, "Seriously, you are triggering me." Hell, Yusaku in the dub once burned down Kolter's kitchen.

How I feel when someone calls the GX/VRAINS characters their sub names

Alternatively (so you all don't think I'm a sub purist for every series)
How I feel when someone calls the 5Ds/most of the Arc V characters their dub names
